Alaska family fishing trips

Why Choose Alaska for Your Family Fishing Trip?

Alaska is a world-renowned fishing destination, famous for its wild salmon, trophy-sized halibut, and a variety of other species. The saltwater wilderness of Southeast Alaska in particular is home to five species of salmon, halibut, sablefish (black cod) , lingcod, and a vast variety of delicious rockfish. But fishing is only part of what makes Alaska such a special place for families to visit.

Wildlife Viewing and Outdoor Activities

Alaska is a vast and stunningly beautiful wilderness that offers a chance to escape from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with nature. You and your family can enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor activities while exploring the state's rugged landscapes and pristine coastline.

Cultural and Educational Opportunities

Alaska's rich cultural heritage and history provide unique and educational opportunities for families to learn about the state's Native peoples and pioneers. Visit museums, historic sites, and cultural centers to gain a deeper understanding of Alaska's past and present.

Fresh Seafood and Local Cuisine

Alaska is known for its fresh and sustainable seafood, which is harvested from the state's waters and enjoyed around the world. You and your family can sample a variety of local cuisine, including fresh salmon, halibut, crab, and more.

May and June

May and June are excellent months for King salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska, particularly in Sitka, Alaska. Cod and rockfish are also very plentiful during these fishing months.

July and August

July and August are considered by some to be the prime months to fish in Alaska due to variety of salmon. In Southeast Alaska, King salmon peak from mid-June to mid-July and silver salmon peak from early August to early September. The bottom fishing for halibut, cod and rockfish remains fairly consistent all summer long.

Early to mid September is an excellent month for halibut fishing and Silver salmon fishing. In September, the fall foliage also starts to emerge, making it a picturesque time to enjoy the natural beauty of Alaska while on your fishing adventure.

Where to Go: Top Alaska Family Fishing Destinations

Alaska offers a wide variety of fishing destinations, each with its unique attractions and fishing opportunities.

Why choose Sitka, Alaska:

Located in Southeast Alaska, Sitka offers some of the best saltwater fishing in the state, including halibut, king salmon, and other species. The island is also home to a variety of wildlife, including humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, seals and otters.

How to Plan Your Alaska Family Fishing Trip

Planning an Alaska family fishing trip can seem overwhelming, but with the right preparation and guidance, it can be a fun and stress-free experience. Here are some tips for planning your ultimate family fishing adventure in Alaska:

Choose your destination: Decide which part of Alaska you want to visit and what type of fishing you want to do. Consider the time of year you plan to visit and the species of fish you want to catch.

Book your all-inclusive lodge: All-inclusive lodges offer a change to relax and unwind in a beautiful natural setting, offering the convenience of having everything you need in one place.

Pack appropriately: Alaska's weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to pack for all conditions. We recommend bringing warm under layers as all of the rain gear is provided.

Consider other activities: While fishing is the main attraction, there are many other activities to enjoy in Alaska, such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and sightseeing. Plan some downtime in your itinerary to explore the area and create lasting memories with your family.

In Conclusion

An Alaska family fishing trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers adventure, relaxation, and a chance to connect with nature. Whether you are an experienced angler or a novice, Alaska has something to offer everyone. With the right planning and preparation, your family can enjoy a memorable and enjoyable fishing adventure in this beautiful and unique destination. Discover why people like you can’t stop talking about Pybus Point Lodge. More than 30 years ago, the lodge opened as a simple fishing camp, drawing a devoted following in spite of basic accommodations. With new owners and experienced captains and crew, our corner of Alaska has become an unbeatable fishing and eco-tourism resort. ‍

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Shirley Johnson

Pybus Point Lodge - WOW!

We had the best time! This was our first visit to Pybus, but it definitely will not be our last. The stunning scenery, amazing fishing experience, and the joy of meeting new friends – all outstanding! We did not want to leave!!! If you are thinking about this trip – don’t think any more, just book it. You will not regret it!!!

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

Brandon Foote

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Kent Danjanovich

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.

Cell Tower & WiFi

Pybus Point Lodge is located on the remote and secluded far south edge of Admiralty Island National Monument. Coverage is always tricky in deep valleys and remote natural areas. We found that AT&T has the most reliable cellular service at the lodge while T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon can be picked up while out on the ocean. We do have a lodge phone you can use if necessary. If you can't get a signal, we do provide free high-speed WIFI to the lodge and cabins. A popular option is to utilize your phones WIFI calling mode to communicate and take calls while at the cabin, although we prefer to unplug and enjoy all that the island has to offer.

Humpback whale watching

The calm, cool waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage are the perfect habitat for humpback whales. Our guests tell us close encounters with these peaceful giants have changed the way they see the world – and we know just what they mean.

Fortress of the Bears

You’ll stay with us on Admiralty Island, called Xootsnoowú by native Tlingit people, which means “Fortress of the Bears.” There are more bears on our island than in all 49 other states combined – and more than 2.5x the number of people here!

Seals & Sea Lions

A short ride in one of our skiffs will take you to the mouth of a river where, if your timing is right, you can watch salmon make their final run to spawn. When it isn’t overrun by bears dining on the feast, you can walk upstream just a few minutes to a beautiful waterfall in the thick forest.

Orca (killer whale) Spotting

From tiny phosphorescent algae lighting up our private docks to enormous humpback whales hunting in our deep, calm waters, you won’t find a more beautiful place to experience Alaska. Pybus Bay is a photographer’s paradise – bald eagles and brown bears, orca, otters and sea lions, and more. We can’t wait to help you experience Alaska.

Memories made at Crooked Creek

Alexander D. from IL 2023

I just got back from the trip, and for now, this is going to be my temporary review with 5 stars. There is a lot to say, and describe, all I can say for now: it's worth every single penny that you spend, the service, the food, the views, the handling absolutely everything it top service. Miss Dorothy, Lindsey, and her entire crew will not leave you disappointed.

Oh, and last thing, lots and lots of fish!!!!

David B. from LA 2021

Crooked Creek lodge is amazing!! That really says it all. Dorothy welcomed us and told us from before we arrived if we needed anything at all, just let her know and she would do her best. Before arrival we had so many choices of things to do during our stay but she really helped in figuring it out for us. This was our first trip to Alaska and Crooked Creek made the stay so enjoyable. The nightly meals were just wonderful and having the opportunity to share stories each night with the other guests was so much nicer than eating at a restaurant by ourselves. It was so nice to have them pack us a lunch for the days adventure. They even packed a special lunch and did special meals for my son who is a picky eater. We had incredible experiences fishing, seeing scenery, and meeting the wonderful people of Alaska. If this is your first or 10’th time traveling to Alaska, you should contact Crooked Creek about staying at their lodge. Words are just hard to describe the wonderful time we had. I am ready to book my next stay already!!

Chris S. from SC 2023

Dorothy and her team are nothing short of amazing. We were spoiled from day 1, and didn't have to worry about any aspect of our trip; from meals to guides. They took a bucket list trip for my son and I and turned it into a life changing experience where we got to see beyond the tourist areas to real Alaska. I will never be able to say enough good things about Crooked Creek!

Ken H. from UT 2023

We had such a sun trip to Alaska and thank Crooked Creek Retreat for making our experience so memorable. We simply let Lindsey know what activities we wanted to participate in and everything was set up from there. Our food, accommodations, and our daily activities were top-notch. Lindsey and Dorothy were exceptional hosts, and we'd love to return sometime soon.

Ernest J. from OH 2022

My son and I just spent a fabulous week at the Crooked Creek Retreat and it was one of the best weeks of my life. From the first day, being greated by Dorothy, Lindsey and Remy the resident dog, the week only got better each day. Their responsiveness to whatever we needed was nothing less than first class. They kept us well fed and informed each day of what was going on the next day. When to get up, where to be and how long it would take to get there. Each day was a treat to be at the Retreat. They were flexible with excursions we wanted, adding a fly in trip that ended up being the best and most productive of all. I want to thank them for a memorable experience that will never be forgotten . Highly recommend them.

Letter From Lindsey

I invite you to come spend a week with us in our lodge, Crooked Creek Outfitters.  The doors were first opened by my mother, Dorothy, in July 2007 and we have been growing ever since.  She built this lodge log by log alongside her family.  My niece and I helped pull wire for outlets – it was truly a family affair!  The lodge is her primary residence, so she is here year-round.  At the end of the 2023 season she decided to step back just a little from the daily operations and even though I had already been managing the lodge with her, she left big shoes to fill!  But not to worry- she is still at the lodge full-time and you will still get to see her and chat with her when you visit.

What makes us special is that we take care of all the details.  Our goal is to make sure you have the best experience possible from the moment you arrive until we are waving goodbye as you are pulling out of the driveway.

I know that it is difficult to pick the right location and then the right outfitter when there are so many on the web.  The Kenai Peninsula gives you accessibility and variety.  Most remote lodges and lodges in the southeast you fish the same thing and the same place every day.  On the Peninsula you will have variety- salt fishing halibut and multi-species, salmon, trout, rivers, lakes, streams, something different every day, or repeat your favorite.

Arrange your flight from your hometown into Anchorage, rent a car, and drive down to us or fly into the Kenai airport and you can rent a car there.  With a vehicle you can go out and about for sight-seeing and other activities.

I would love to have you stay with us for the first time or visit us again.  All of you who have stayed with us in the past helped make the last many years a great success.  You have made memories together with Dorothy, and I have truly enjoyed making memories with you as well.  I would love to see you again or meeting you for the first time!

I will welcome you like your favorite cousin would- I will take care of details, serve wonderful fresh food, and schedule the best activities and fishing trips I can.  You will love it here and immediately feel at home once you walk in the front door.  We have worked hard to make this a high-end lodge/outfitter and balance that with real, down-home comfort.  I love to see our guests down at the fire pit throwing horseshoes or sitting around the tables after dinner laughing.  When the cars pull in, I can't wait to hear how your day was.  Sometimes my daughter, Ruth, or my husband, Jonathan, will come to help grab lunch boxes and want to hear your stories too.  This is a family business built with love, and after you stay with us, you’re family too!  Come join us!

I look forward to hearing from you,

Our First-Hand Experience

As our floatplane from Ketchikan arrived at the dock, out popped owner Brad’s cheery wave. Brad said, “Make yourself at home! This is your home for the week and we are excited that you are here.” One of the warmest greetings we have ever received…and he meant it!

Chef Eric delighted us each evening with delicious meals, warm bread and deserts to die for. Then breakfast. Oh my, we recommend the omelets…yum yum!

Jay, our guide, showed us a great time while fishing for halibut and salmon on the saltwater side, successfully filling our fish boxes. Then he took us freshwater fishing for some of the best Dolly Varden fly fishing we have ever enjoyed. A favorite memory for us was the walk along a stream through the rain forest to arrive at the mouth of a river surrounded by a scenic lake. The lodge had top of the line equipment as well as waders and boots for us so we could pack light in order to take as much fish home as possible on the plane.

Kayaking, Totem Pole village, fly out float plane to see the Misty Fjords, bear watching, vintage gold mind, cave exploring and much more are available to entertain those that do now wish to fish all the time.

If you are a steel head angler or are after the elusive fish, then this is the prime location to enjoy the challenge. This is the honey hole!

Alaska Family Fishing and Adventure Lodge

Needless to say, this destination is perfect for the hardcore angler and the adventurer alike!

The lodge is located in South Southeast Alaska which is about a 30-minute float plane flight from the quaint town of Ketchikan .

Your package is “all inclusive” except for jet airfare, gratuities, local tax, and premium spirits. This means your trip includes luxury lodging; all meals including gourmet cuisine dining fare prepared by the professional, culinary-trained chefs, house beers and wine; all fresh and saltwater equipment including 28’ heated, cabin cruisers and top-of-the-line Orvis fly fishing rods and reels, boots and waders, tackle, and all-weather gear; professionally guided service on both fresh and saltwater fishing and for all other activities; fish packing; float plane; and fishing licenses.

This fresh and saltwater fishing lodge has a maximum occupancy of only 19 guests and a staff of twenty-two service industry professionals. This ratio allows the lodge to provide guests with the exclusive treatment and pleasure that they truly deserve. And, they have received the coveted Award of Excellence from Sporting Classics Magazine. The magazine has named them “Fishing Lodge of the Year” for North America.

The lodge is warm and inviting. It offers 11 bedrooms each with private or shared bathrooms. The log lodge has a comfortable dining room and small sitting area warmed by a wood burning stove. Just outside the dining room, you will enjoy outdoor seating for beautiful days.

Meals are a highlight! Order off the menu each morning and evening. The chef is exceptional and your meals will be memorable! Delicious fish, pork, steaks and more are on the menu for you to select from.  The deserts are a temptation not to be missed each evening. At dinner, you will fill out your lunch preferences from a great selection of sandwich meats, salty snacks, sweets, fruit and more. Your lunch will be packed and ready for your adventure the next morning before you depart.

Below are some of the amenities at the lodge:

Fresh Water Fishing: Freshwater angling is abundant in nearby rivers, lakes and streams. The Island’s largest waterway — the Thorne River — is just up the road from the lodge property. Your experienced freshwater guide will lead you to the most productive fishing holes on the Island.

Use of premium Orvis fly rods and reels, spinning rigs, waders, wading boots and wet weather gear is included in your lodge package. You will be supplied with a wide range of equipment to fit the conditions and to meet your needs. While the equipment and tackle is all-inclusive in your stay, you’re always welcome to bring the time-trusted gear you just can’t do without. (Please note that felt-sole wading boots are not permitted in Alaska.)

Steelhead Native

Steelhead fishing here is the finest you will find. Steelheads run in local streams from April through early June. It’s not summer, but the coastal climate is mild with average temperatures around 45 degrees. Hearty anglers will have a chance at some of the world’s best native Steelhead fishing, with fish ranging from 8-12 pounds and trophy class fish topping 18 pounds or more. For fly fishermen, we recommend a 9-foot, 7- or 8-weight fly rod. A reel with a smooth drag, loaded with both floating and sink-tip lines, is also recommended. Most of the popular steelhead flies will work, but some of the better producers include: Comet (orange and red/white), Marabou (black, orange, red), Popsicle, Purple egg-sucking leech, Green-Butt Skunk, Woolly Buggers (green, purple, black), and Black articulated leech.

For spin casting, we recommend a 7-8 foot medium rod with a medium weight reel. Good lures are egg imitators and #2-3 Mepps Aglia (fluorescent red or gold). Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden Cutthroat and Dolly Varden are abundant in local streams and lakes from April through September. The spring season (May and June) is excellent with fish ranging from 10-21 inches. Trout fly fishing gear should include a 3-5 weight rod and a quality reel. An assortment of smolt patterns and dry flies including Stimulators, Adams, Mosquitoes and assorted Nymphs will have the trout and Dollies jumping. For spin casting, we recommend a light action rod and reel, with as assortment of spinners (size 0-3), jigs and spoons (size 1/8 oz.)

Saltwater Fishing

This lodge is home to trophy-class fishing located throughout the deep fjords and emerald-green waters of Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. Because of the location of the lodge on the Inside Passage, they enjoy the comforts of fishing in relatively calm waters. Even on a windy day, they experience a comparatively small chop and no open ocean swell. Rarely do they fish more than 200 yards from land.

The boats are 28-foot ocean cruisers, specially designed for your comfort and safety. Each is equipped with a heated cabin, flushing private toilet and all required tackle. In addition to being highly knowledgeable about local fishing areas and techniques, your saltwater captain is U.S. Coast Guard licensed, certified in first aid and CPR. In addition to the fleet of ocean cruisers and experienced captains, the lodge provides you with saltwater fishing rods, tackle and bait.

The staff cleans, fillets or steaks, vacuum packs, freezes and boxes your saltwater fish for you to take home. Freezer facilities are on hand at some hotels in Ketchikan, as well as Ketchikan International Airport. Freezer storage is also available at SeaTac Airport, if you need to overnight in Seattle. We do not advise shipping fish home via delivery service.

Seasonal salmon runs in local rivers and streams begin in July. Chum and Pink salmon start their runs in mid-July and continue to be fishable through mid-August and mid-September respectively. Silver salmon begin their run in August and are fishable throughout September.

Fly fishing gear should consist of 5-7 weight rods for Pinks; 7-8 weight rods for Chum and Silvers. Popular flies for all salmon include Bead Head Canadian Leech (rust and black), Egg Sucking Leech (purple and black), Polar Shrimp, Orange Comet and Popsicle. Spin casting gear should include a medium to heavy action rod and reel. Popular lures include #3 and #4 Blue Fox Vibrax spinners (silver, orange and green), 1/4 and 1/2 oz Blue Fox Pixie spoons (orange and green), and various Mepps spinners in sizes 3 and 4.

Chinook Salmon:   Commonly called Kings, Chinook salmon are Alaska’s state fish and the largest and scarcest of Pacific salmon. They’re especially known for their power and endurance. Perhaps the most favored sportfishing method for Kings is trolling with rigged herring, though spoons and flashers are also attractive. The largest King ever taken weighed in at 126 pounds, though Kings usually range from 25-50 pounds. They are most prevalent in these waters in June and July.

Silver Salmon:   Silvers, or Coho salmon, are hard fighters and can provide intense action. The Coho average 12-15 pounds, but can be found weighing in at over 20 pounds. These salmon are most plentiful from late July through September.

Pink Salmon:   These are the smallest and most abundant salmon in area waters. Pinks have a two-year life cycle and average 3-5 pounds. Upon entering freshwater streams, pinks develop a dorsal hump, thus their nickname “Humpy.” Saltwater Humpy fishing is best during July and August.

Chum Salmon:   Also called Dog salmon, Chums are famous for their strength and large teeth, which develop most prominently in males upon entering fresh water. Chums are available mid-July through August, averaging 15 pounds with an occasional lunker topping 25 pounds.

Sockeye Salmon:   Also called Red salmon, Sockeyes are the most difficult salmon to catch in area waters. While regarded for their fighting skill, saltwater sockeye sport fishing is limited.

BOTTOM FISHING

Halibut: Halibut are by far the most popular bottom-fish inhabiting the waters. The Pacific halibut is a toothy flatfish that is normally caught on or near the ocean floor. As with the majority of bottomfish, drifting or anchoring with bait are among the most preferred means of enticing these monsters, which can literally take hours to land. Halibut can live more than 20 years, and the average catch weighs in around 40 pounds. The largest Pacific Halibut ever caught, tipped the scales at 495 pounds. Local Halibut over 300 pounds have been caught and good opportunities for hauling in huge Halibut exist all summer.

Rockfish:   Rockfish is a term used to describe over 10 species of light-fleshed bottomfish, including the yellow-eye (similar to the Atlantic red snapper) rockfish and black sea bass. Most rockfish weigh between 1- 6 pounds, with the yellow-eye being the largest, averaging 6 pounds. Rockfish are long-lived, and depending on the species, may reach ages of 30-100 years. Good rockfish fishing occurs during the warm summer months.

Lingcod:   Like Halibut and rockfish, Lingcod is usually found on or near the bottom, most often over rocky reefs in areas of strong currents. These fish are extremely aggressive predators, often growing to over 50 pounds in weight and 4 feet in length. These feisty fish usually range from 10-40 pounds and are abundant throughout Boardwalk’s fishing season.

Dungeness Crab :  Crabbing is available at Boardwalk. It can be done as part of the routine fishing day. Boardwalk guides will be pleased to take you to crabbing areas during regular fishing hours. However, be aware that Fish and Game regulations require guests prepare their own crab pots and physically set and pull.

Timeline: Steelhead:  April through mid may Halibut: Great the entire season King Salmon: Early June – Early July Chum Salmon: Mid-June – Mid-July Pink Salmon: Mid-July – Early August Sockeye Salmon: Mid-June – Mid July Silver Salmon: August – September (Aug silvers are in Bay and hit rivers in Sept) Dolly Varden: July – September Rainbow Trout: July – September Sea Bass/ Rock Fish: Entire season Best Bears: July – September

Day 6:  Depart after breakfast and enjoy the afternoon in Ketchikan

Day 7:  Begin travels home

Travel Schedule:

Travel from your hometown to Seattle, Washington can be booked with the airline of your choice. However, for ease in taking your catch home, we suggest you use an Alaska Airlines partner. When using a partner airline, your fish and luggage can be sent directly from Ketchikan to your final destination.

Transferring in Seattle. You will need to transfer in Seattle to Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines schedule changes seasonally, with three to five flights daily between Seattle and Ketchikan. You will need to arrive in Ketchikan by 5:00 p.m. if you want to reach the lodge that evening.

Float plane to the lodge. You will be traveling from Ketchikan to the lodge on a float plane. After you claim your luggage in Ketchikan, proceed to the float plane counter on level one where agents will escort you to the plane. Upon arrival at our dock, Lodge personnel will meet you and transport luggage to your room.

Lodge Departures. The typical departure time from the lodge is 10:00 a.m. However, the time of the flight will be determined by availability and the time of your return jet flight from Ketchikan.

We recommend that you overnight in Ketchikan on departure day in case of weather delays.

Telephone. Family, friends, and associates may leave a message for a guest. Often the work at the lodge keeps lodge staff away from the phone, but guests can receive voice mail when they return from the day’s fishing. In an emergency, staff can make immediate contact with the boats. The telephone operates through a fixed-cellular radio signal. The connection is generally clear, but weather and other interference can affect the signal.

Cell Phone Service. The Verizon network is very stable here. However, the cellular relay is erratic for other carriers. Depending on your provider, you may find clear pockets, especially on the open water.

There is WiFi access at the lodge. The service is provided via satellite, which is typically sufficient for email and light web browsing; however, it is likely much slower than what you may be used to.

The 8 top alaska cruise lines of 2024.

The Top Alaska Cruise Lines

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

To assist in your decision-making process, U.S. News listed the top cruise lines to consider across five categories, including the best options for families , luxury-seekers and adventurers. U.S. News consulted data provided by Cruiseline.com and the results of our 2024 Best Cruise Lines rankings to help develop this list of the top cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Best Overall: Holland America Line and Princess Cruises

Holland america line.

Holland America Line's Westerdam in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Best for Families: Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International

Norwegian cruise line.

Race track atop the Norwegian Bliss in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Available on Norwegian Jewel in April, May and June 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Celebrity Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Celebrity Summit , Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Solstice Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $397 per person for seven-night voyage on Celebrity Summit, Seward to Vancouver on May 17, 2024

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Best Luxury: Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises

Regent seven seas cruises.

Alaska cruise ships: Seven Seas Explorer Departure cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $4,699 per person (all-inclusive) for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on May 1, 2024

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Pool bar on the Silver Nova.

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.

Everything to know about Katmai National Park

This Alaska Peninsula park is a great place for hiking, fishing, bear-watching—and exploring volcanoes.

Volcanoes and bears embody the wild heart of Katmai, located on the Alaska Peninsula. Within the borders of the national park and preserve lie 14 active volcanoes and North America's largest population of protected brown bears—some 2,000 of the photogenic creatures.

Visitors can hike, kayak, and canoe in Katmai. They can fish waist-deep in rivers as clear as glass. And they can watch the best fish catcher of them all, the great Alaskan brown bear , sometimes diving underwater for its prey, sometimes catching salmon in midair.

The coastline of Alaska's Katmai National Park near the base of Mt. Douglas as seen from an airplane

Katmai’s other allure is extreme volcanism. The 1912 eruption of Novarupta —the world’s largest volcanic event of the 20th century—discharged 30 times more magma than Mount St. Helens in 1980. Ash from the explosion drifted all the way around the planet, global temperatures cooled, acid rain burned clothing off laundry lines in Vancouver, British Columbia—and on Kodiak Island, just across Shelikof Strait from Katmai, it was dark as night for three straight days.

Leading a 1916 expedition sponsored by the National Geographic Society, botanist Robert F. Griggs ascended Katmai Pass from Shelikof Strait. “The whole valley as far as the eye could reach was full of hundreds, no, thousands—literally, tens of thousands—of smokes curling up from its fissured floor,” he wrote. The smokes were fumaroles steaming 500 to 1,000 feet into the air. Griggs, who named the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, spearheaded the campaign to include Katmai in the National Park System.

Where to find the best views in the park

Dumpling Mountain   is the easiest place to enjoy a panoramic view of Katmai. The tundra-covered summit is 4.6 miles northwest of Brooks Camp, site of a summer visitors center and the hub of park activity. The view takes in all three arms of Naknek Lake as well as the distant Alaska Range.

Those with well-honed wilderness skills can paddle eight miles across the Iliuk Arm of Naknek Lake and bushwhack their way up 4,730-foot Mount Katolinat for even more stunning views of the park.

Best trails

Short, flat and wheelchair accessible, the Brooks Falls Trail offers a 1.2-mile hike through boreal forest to a pair of bear-viewing platforms along the Brooks River. Hikers should be aware that bears are frequently encountered along the route.

A tour group crosses the grasslands of Hallo Bay in a line in Alaska's Katmai National Park

Two other short, easy trails start from Brooks Camp. The Cultural Site Trail meanders through an archaeological zone that includes the remains of several prehistoric settlements and a replica semi-subterranean dwelling similar to those that Katmai’s long-ago residents called home, while the Brooks River Bridge Trail leads to bear-viewing platforms overlooking Naknek Lake.

Starting from the bridge’s south end, energetic hikers can follow the 23-mile Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road   to the Robert F. Griggs Visitor Center and the valley’s volcanic wonders. Brooks Lodge offers a drop-off/pick-up shuttle service ($55 one way) to the visitors center.

Best spots for seeing wildlife

Brooks Falls is world-renowned for bear viewing, especially during the summer when dozens of brown bears are attracted by the salmon run. An annual tradition since 2014, Fat Bear Week gives the public a chance to watch the bruins in person or on the Brooks Bear Cam and vote on which bear has done the best job of plumping up for winter hibernation.

Brown bear cubs walk on river stones on the side of a creek

There’s also great bear watching from June to September in mudflats, meadows, and salmon streams along the park’s Pacific coast, especially Hallo Bay, Swikshak Lagoon, Geographic Harbor, Moraine Creek, and Funnel Creek.

Ranger Matt Johnson, the park’s interpretation and education program manager, says the Brooks area is also good for spotting river otters, porcupines, eagles, and merganser ducks. “It’s fun to watch the mergansers,” says Johnson, “because the mother always keeps the ducklings in line. The wilder she quacks, the closer together they get.”

Katmai’s offshore waters attract a wide variety of marine creatures, from sea lions and sea otters to migrating humpback whales and orcas. Meanwhile, the park’s lakes, rivers, wetlands, and shoreline offer ideal habitats for many migratory bird species that breed, give birth, and raise their chicks during the summer.

How to visit the park like a Nat Geo Explorer

“We definitely had a lot of bear encounters,” says National Geographic Explorer and photographer Katie Orlinsky, who joined archaeologists and other scientists on a 2018 journey across Katmai that followed in the footsteps of the historic Griggs Expedition of 1916. “And we were there in early June, long before salmon primetime.”

After getting dropped at several spots in the Katmai backcountry by bush plane, Orlinsky and her colleagues backpacked and pack-rafted their way across the park’s remote wilderness, searching for artifacts that Griggs and his team might have left behind.

A visitor photographs a brown bear on her phone

For Orlinsky, the most startling thing about the trek wasn’t close encounters of the bear kind but the incredible variety of terrain they tramped across. “We had everything from beach and grassy marshes and rocky terrain with petrified trees to river crossings and pretty deep snow where you’d be wearing snowshoes.”

Her advice for anyone visiting the park is to explore beyond the Brooks Falls area. “The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is incredible, especially if you can see it from the air in a small plane and then explore the valley on foot.” Last but not least: “Always be bear aware.”

Best activities and excursions

The rare opportunity to observe and photograph brown bears in the wild is the park’s premier attraction. Several bear-viewing platforms along the Brooks River render closer encounters of the bruin kind. Staying several days in the lodge or campground at Brooks Camp enables return visits to the great bear show.

For those who can’t overnight in the park,   Katmai Air   and Rust’s Flying Service   are among the aviation outfits with bear-viewing daytrips from Anchorage in floatplanes that touch down on   Naknek Lake beside Brooks Camp. From Homer, Smokey Bay Air   and   Alaska Bear Adventures offer bear-viewing daytrips to the Katmai coast.

During the summer season,   Katmai Trading Post in Brooks Camp rents fishing gear, as well as canoes and kayaks for paddling Naknek Lake and beyond. Brooks Lodge offers a natural history guided bus tour to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes , as well as guided fishing trips and flightseeing over the volcanic Alaska Range.

Katmai is a paradise for experienced backpackers and paddlers with advanced wilderness skills. Backcountry camping is allowed everywhere in the park beyond a 1.5-mile radius around the Brooks Camp/Brooks Falls developed zone. Bear-proof food storage containers are mandatory for all backcountry camping, and bear spray or a portable electric fence are highly recommended. Backcountry permits are not required but overnight hikers are encouraged to file a trip plan at a park visitors center.

While there are no established long-distance hiking routes, Katmai does have an epic paddling trail. The 80-mile Savonoski Loop   starts and ends at Brooks Camp. A full week is recommended for a watery passage that includes the Iliuk Arm, Savonoski River, Lake Grosvenor, a portage through boreal forest, and the North Arm of Naknek Lake.

The park is open in winter. “But I don’t know a lot of people doing that,” says ranger Matt Johnson. Visitors would have to charter their own plane or strike off from King Salmon on cross-country skis or a snowmobile. “There are no established trails into the park and it’s a long way. It’s not easy or recommended.”

Best family-friendly experiences

Katmai is not an ideal park for families with smaller children, but older kids and teens relish the wildlife, outdoor adventure, and dramatic wilderness landscapes. Bear-watching at Brooks Camp is the number-one family activity, but there’s also scope for short hikes, fishing, and canoeing/kayaking in the same area.

Other family-friendly activities include evening ranger talks at Brooks Camp and the ranger-led excursion to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and its volcanic wasteland. Like other national parks, Katmai offers a Junior Ranger Program with various activities listed in a booklet that can be downloaded before your visit. Matt Johnson also recommends the park’s Junior Angler and Junior Paleontologist programs.

Where to stay

The National Park Services operates Brooks Camp Campground   in the heart of the park and Fure’s Cabin (built in 1926) on the Bay of Islands. The campground is open May 1 to October 31; the cabin is available year-round. Reservations for both can be made at Recreation.gov .

Privately run accommodation includes the popular Brooks Lodge near the best bear viewing, as well as Katmai Wilderness Lodge on the coast, and remote fishing outposts like Grosvenor Lodge on Lake Grosvenor, Royal Wolf Lodge on the Nonvianuk River, and Kulik Lodge on Nonvianuk Lake.

Essential things to know about Katmai

Access: With no road access, the best way to reach the park is flying. Alaska Airlines has two daily (one-hour) flights from Anchorage to King Salmon, where passengers can transfer to daily floatplane service with several air carriers to Brooks Camp (June to mid-September). Air charters can transport visitors to other areas of the park including the coast and remote fishing lodges.

Alternatively, you can hop the new daily Katmai Water Taxi from King Salmon to Brooks Camp (June 1 to late September), a journey of around 45 minutes via the Naknek River and Lake Naknek.

When to visit:   June to September is when accommodations, transportation, and other park services are fully available. The park is largely inaccessible during the snowy winter and rainy spring. Bear watching, an increasingly popular pastime, is best in July when the sockeye salmon spawn. Rain and wind are common during the summer, when daytime temperatures can range from 30°F to 80°F; the average low is 44 ° F.

Fishing: An Alaska state sport fishing license is mandatory for all nonresidents age 16 and older. Catch and release is encouraged. Anglers should be aware that fishing can attract bears and they should always keep at least 50 yards away from the animals.

Pets:   Pets are not allowed anywhere in the park. Service animals must be kept on a leash and under the owner’s complete control at all times in order to avoid encounters with bears and other wildlife.

Accessibility:   Given Katmai’s rugged terrain and remote wilderness, accessible services are only found at Brooks Camp, where many of the structures, two campsites, and bear-viewing platforms are ADA compliant. The visitors center offers a limited number of all-terrain wheelchairs while the park brochure has braille and audio description versions.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In Sitka

Having an authentic or local experience for lunch in Sitka will be paramount to feeling travelers have done it all, and all within the luxury of a one-day Alaska cruise ship stop. There are countless reasons why a cruise in Alaska is a great way to see Sitka , but more than anything it is for the convenience it offers.

Folks looking for a longer stay will enjoy the solitude and tranquility of nature, and will likely want to take it slow on hiking trails and outdoor pursuits.

Q: Is Sitka a walkable town?

Because Sitka is so small (in contrast with Alaska's main hub, Anchorage ), it can be explored on foot when the weather permits.

Q: Is it worth visiting Sitka Alaska?

Sitka is an excellent destination for people who enjoy being outdoors, don't mind the cold, and are interested in the local history of indigenous Alaskans. It's also near enough to Juneau to make a whole Alaskan adventure out of a trip.

Q: What is the best month to visit Sitka Alaska?

The best time to visit Alaska, whether by land or via a cruise , is summer because it tends to have the fairest weather.

Deadliest Catch Star Nick Mavar Dead at 59 in Medical Emergency

Nick mavar, who spent 16 years as a deckhand on discovery channel's deadliest catch , died at 59 after a medical emergency in alaska..

The reality television world has lost one of its own.

Nick Mavar —who found fame on the long-running Discovery Channel show  Deadliest Catch —has died, according to Alaskan authorities. He was 59.

The former deckhand of the FV Northwestern passed away following an undisclosed medical emergency on June 13, Chief Jeffrey Elbie  of the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department told E! News.

As of June 14, Elbie said the investigation remains open. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

E! News has reached out to the Discovery Channel, as well as Mavar's family for comment.

From 2005 to 2021, Mavar appeared on 98 episodes of Deadliest Catch , a reality series following fisherman navigating the brutal conditions of the Bering Sea during crab season. During that time, he worked aboard the Northwestern commercial fishing vessel alongside Captain  Sig Hansen , maintaining the ship's mechanical equipment.

He ultimately left the show after health issues related to his appendix,  which was documented on a June 2021 episode of the series .

Mavar's passing comes nearly four years after the  Deadliest Catch  crew lost  Nick McGlashan , a deckhand on FV Cape Caution and a deck boss on FV Summer Bay.

The 33-year-old passed away in December 2020 at the age of 33.  In a statement to E! News at the time of his death , Discovery sent their condolences to his family, sharing, "Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions."

The network added, "He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him."

We are looking for a family fishing trip that can accommodate children from 3-12 years old.

We have four children ages 3-12 years. We would ultimately like to fish for two days, and have time to experience the outdoors through different ways that can accommodate our three year old and five year old. Without our children feeling held back by them. We would like to stay for five days. Our budget is dependent upon the options offered. With that said we do not need 5 star luxury. We opt more for extremely clean, and safe. I hope that is of some help. Thank you.

Hello Tony: I'm going to assume that at least part of your vacation will be in the Anchorage area , so I'd like to suggest that you head north from there to the Matanuska Valley (the towns of Wasilla and Palmer) where you'll be able to find reasonable motels or B&B's near Montana Creek and Willow Creek or Little Willow Creek where you can fish with your kids, and also be near some nice hiking trails. You can also visit the Musk Ox farm, which I promise you the kids will love. I also believe that a company called "Tippy Canoe" is still operating so you could rent a canoe do some fishing on one of the many lakes in the area. Denali National Park is nearby so you can visit the tallest mountain in North American and take advantage of all the other things to do in Denali National Park !

Take a look at www.alaskavisit.com and go to the Mat-Su Valley section for lots more information. Have a great trip! Pudge Kleinkauf

I'm super happy you've chosen Alaska for your family's vacation and I'm going to do my best to give you a variety of options given the goals you have. Trying to be sensitive to travelling with young kids, these options should give you a good idea of what to expect and you can decide how well your kids will do.

RV's have some definite upside when visiting Alaska. You essentially can combine a "hotel" and rental car in one vehicle. There are lots of campgrounds and RV parks with a wide variety of experiences (everything from roughing it to parks with showers, grocery stores, etc...). RV's also give you the freedom to adjust your plans and be nimble, should you decide to change any of your plans.

Whether you're renting a car or driving an RV, and assuming you're flying into Anchorage, I would suggest you set your sights on Seward for your first couple of days. On the drive to Seward, there are several fun activities that are very family-friendly. There are several stops along the Turnagain Arm for sightseeing and for a chance to spot sheep on the mountain-side. In Girdwood, near the end of the Turnagain Arm, you can ride the Tram at the Alyeska Ski Resort and be at eye-level with glaciers and have a tremendous view of Cook Inlet . You'll also find great little restaurants from sit-down family to grab-and-go at COAST pizza.

Past Girdwood, you'll find other attractions such as the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, basically a drive-through zoo of sorts. You'll also be able to take a hike to Byron Glacier via the Portage Glacier Road on the way to Whittier. At the end of the Arm, you'll drive through the mountains with several scenic stop offs along the way. The town of Hope can be found a short drive off the Seward Highway, which also touts tremendous views.

Once in Seward, you'll have several options for fishing, hiking, outdoor activities and for scenic boat rides. Seward also has several fun shops, the Sealife Center and restaurants. I would suggest chartering a halibut/salmon trip for a day. Most boats have closed cabins if the kids get tired or want to do something other than fishing. Generally, you can see whales and awesome views while headed to your fishing destination and back. I would also highly encourage you to pick one of the Kenai Fjord Tours available in Seward. These boat trips generally put you right near Humpback Whales, Dall Porpoises, Sea Otters and the occasional Killer Whale.

Once you've spent a couple quality days in Seward, a trip to Cooper Landing will prove to be a highlight of your vacation. Though this is my hometown and I am quite partial to it, I truly believe that there are endless things to do for an adventurous family.

The Kenai River originates in Cooper Landing and is home to world-famous Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Salmon fishing. The river flows through the mountain town and is as picturesque as it gets! There are several ways to enjoy the river: hiking to vantage points along Kenai Lake, hiking Slaughter Ridge, taking a scenic raft trip and taking a drift boat fishing trip.

Cooper Landing is also home to the Russian River , where if you time it right, you can witness Sockeye Salmon jump the Russian Falls as they make their annual spawning migration up to the Russian Lakes. It is not uncommon to see Brown Bears, Black Bears and the occasional Moose in Cooper Landing. Caution should be taken when hiking, such as wearing bear bells, carrying bear spray and generally being loud as you hike.

As far as fishing the Kenai River goes, no drift boat can legally carry 6 passengers, so you'll have to charter 2 drift boats. The cost is still the same per person however. There are full day and half day options. Most guides here will have the willingness to work with young children and can show you an amazing time on the river. The float alone is worth the cost of the trip. The fish just add icing on the cake! Keep in mind that we do not keep trout or dolly varden; however, depending on the season, limits of salmon can range from 1 per person/day up to 6 per person/day.

River or Ocean Only Options: The benefit here is having a home base and less travelling/stress

River "only" option.

This option can be achieved either by the use of an RV or by a rental car. My thought here is to rent a car in Anchorage and pick a quaint vacation rental in Cooper Landing (once again, I am partial to Cooper Landing, but it's hard to beat!). These vacation rentals can be everything from a rustic cabin, to a 5-star quality bed and breakfast. It's best to do your research on TripAdvisor ® and other travel sites to find accommodations to best suit your needs. Renting a cabin or house can give you an excellent "home" while away from home. A place to relax and spread out. Depending on which rental you choose, you could have river access and some rentals will loan fishing equipment.

I would also once again plan on chartering drift boats for a couple of days worth of fishing. You could set it up where you float different parts of the Kenai River so you can see more of the mighty Kenai.

Aside from fishing, the hikes mentioned above are worth the time and are not that difficult. There are many other activities in Cooper Landing like horseback riding, kayaking, gold panning, etc.

Ocean Option

Much like the River Only option, renting a car and a hotel/vacation property in an Ocean location would give you a relaxing "home base" to operate out of. Several small towns are ideal for this sort of option. Seward , mentioned earlier, Whittier, Homer , Ninilchik , to name a few all have their own unique charm. World-class halibut and salmon fishing can all be found as well as other great outdoor activities. There are also lots of places to visit within an hour or 2 of each "ocean town," should you choose to expand your options even further.

I hope these options help you narrow your search and make the decision for you a little easier. You know your family best and I'm confident that there is a perfect Alaskan vacation waiting for you here!

We look forward to seeing you in Alaska!
