Gameplay [ ]

Level Structure

Most levels consist of having to find and reach the exit. Usually there are obstacles such as Barrier Glyphs that impede the player's progress and have to be removed. In other cases the player will have to solve puzzles or fight a boss.

With the exception of the battle with the Vortex Queen, upon starting a level, the game will give the player a password that can be used to return to that level at any time. With the exception of The Last Fight, the player has infinite continues. All levels are arcade style and must be cleared in one try with no checkpoints present.

Health & Oxygen

The player has two bars to be mindful of: health and oxygen. Running out of health automatically kills Ecco and forces the player to restart the level. Health is depleted upon taking damage from enemies and hazards, while oxygen is generally depleted the longer Ecco stays underwater. If Ecco's oxygen bar runs out, his health bar will begin to deteriorate until he surfaces for air.

Breaching will automatically restore Ecco's oxygen bar, while simply poking his head out of the water will restore his oxygen at a gradual rate. Late in the game, Ecco will be granted Infinite Oxygen by the Asterite. Health can be restored by eating fish, swallowing bubbles from certain Shelled Ones, or singing to an Invincibility Glyph. Late in the game the Asterite will grant Ecco an ability which gradually automatically restores his health, however this ability is unavailable during the fight with the Vortex Queen.

Ecco can be instantly killed by crushing hazards such as moving rocks and chunks of ice, or by being swallowed by the Vortex Queen. Ecco will not take damage while being empowered by an Invincibility Glyph, however he will still be vulnerable to crushing hazards.

Controls [ ]

Controller

A - Sonar . Advance text.

B - Dash/charge attack.

C - Accelerate swimming speed.

B+A - Charge Sonar (has to be unlocked first).

Directional Pad - Used to move Ecco in 8 directions (Up/Down/Left/Right + diagonals).

Start - Pauses and un-pauses game.

Technical Details [ ]

While the Genesis console lacked the means to perform many special effects that could be performed on the competing Super Nintendo, Ecco the Dolphin does make use of a lighting system of sorts. When Ecco is above the surface or at varying depths underwater, the color of his sprite and the overall palette of the level will change slightly to show varying levels of light (at lower levels the coral reefs in the background will become harder to see).

You are Ecco , a dolphin splashing with your pod in your home bay . On a dare from another dolphin you leap as high as you can in the sky at the peak of the jump the ocean is suddenly sucked up in a sudden waterspout. When you land back in the water your pod is gone and you begin your journey.

You venture from your home bay and find other dolphins rocked by the sudden storms, some of which were trapped under vents. You find an Orca who tells you to find Big Blue , a blue whale who has headed north to die.

You head past the open ocean into the frigid waters of the north and you find Big Blue , he does not know what has happened to your pod either but tells you of a being older than him that Ecco should find. This directs Ecco to the Asterite .

Ecco ventures back to warmer waters and finds the Asterite who tells Ecco about the Vortex , a race of aliens who visit every 500 years to feed off of life on earth. The Asterite is weak and tells Ecco that he can help it if Ecco finds the sunken city of Atlantis and uses a time machine to travel back in time and get one of its globes in the past.

Ecco travels to the sunken city of Atlantis where there is more information about the Vortex, not only have they been visiting every 500 years, they are getting hungrier with each visit and taking more. The Atlanteans were unable to stop the Vortex but crafted the time machine and glyphs for Ecco so that he could stop the Vortex. Ecco finds the time machine and travels back in time to a prehistoric era and manages to find a prehistoric Asterite and steal one of its globes before returning back to the present.

Ecco returns the globe to the Asterite and the Asterite endows Ecco with powers, Ecco no longer requires air and his sonar can now harm the Vortex. The Asterite tells Ecco to use the time machine once more and return to the day of the storm so that Ecco can be taken with his pod and defeat the Vortex from inside.

Ecco travels inside the Vortex ship, defeats the Vortex Queen , saving the earth and Ecco's pod. He returns home to resume his life once more.

Development History [ ]

Ed Annunziata had difficulty getting Sega to accept his main concept of Ecco the Dolphin as a video game. After pitching the idea repeatedly for over a year to a cold reception, Annunziata eventually decided to transfer to EA for a better paying job. When Sega asked what it would take to keep him at the company, they accepted his request for funds and a team to develop an Ecco prototype. The prototype spent six weeks in development. Upon seeing the prototype, Sega discretely approved the game for full production when it appeared on their product plans. The game spent 10 months in development. Throughout the game's development, Ed repeatedly fought with Sega and won the battle for total creative control.

Development Team:

Producer: Ed Annunziata

Game Design: Ed Annunziata, Laszlo Szenttornyai

Main Programmer: Molnar Joszef

Art: Balogh Zsolt

Music: Spencer Nilsen, Magyari Andras, Brian Coburn

Sales & Sequel [ ]

The game became a major seller for Sega in the major video game markets of the time, selling millions of copies. As a result, a sequel was authorized for production, Ecco: The Tides of Time , and was released for the Sega Genesis two years later in 1994. And a Spin off Ecco Jr was released for the Sega Genesis under the Sega Club in 1995 and a sequel Ecco Jr. and the Great Ocean Treasure Hunt was released in 1995 for the Sega Pico. Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future was released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, and later ported to the Playstation 2 in 2002.

  • The Western box art for the game was designed by Boris Vallejo
  • The original name for Ecco was Delphinus, Clyde G came up with 'echo!' and replaced the 'h' with another 'c'
  • The blue ripple effect behind the text screens was originally a bug.
  • Zsolt Balogh, was 19 years old when he did 95% of the art of Ecco 1 & 2
  • The CD version has a hidden documentary video, located in a glyph in the Library /Atlantis level
  • The Japanese version has numerous difficulty changes, notably in Welcome to the Machine where there has been checkpoint glyphs added to the level, and the addition of The Stomach a separate level if the player is eaten by the final boss in lieu of replaying Welcome to the Machine.
  • There is a fan-made upgrade to the Windows version called Ecco the Dolphin : Fixed and Enhanced Edition which adds new features such as choice between the original Genesis/Master System soundtrack or the CD version.

Courtney greeted our group of students on the bus- from her intro, I knew this was going to be a great time. She was amazingly witty (too witty for 10 and 11-year-olds, but as an adult, I loved her)! She was super friendly and very knowledgeable about all of the ocean life we encountered on the tour. It's a beautiful place and you will enjoy walking the sands and learning about the history of the land.

Captain John (Stingray) and Jassen were wonderful guides on April 17, 2019! From explaining the eco system in the marsh, showing us a variety of crabs, allowing us to interrupt when we saw dolphins, pointing out a U-boat look-out tower on Dewees Island, and other wildlife that was seen on our way to and from Caper's Island.

Very informative boat ride through the intracoastal waterway. We saw dolphins and pulled up crab pots. Capers Island is the real deal. Once there, you see why photographers from every corner of the world come to photograph the beach. Extraordinary! Great trip for visitors, locals and families.

We were very impressed by this low environmental impact boat trip to Caper Island. Lots of wildlife to enjoy on the way followed by some gentle peaceful time on the island itself. Our guide and skipper was highly knowledgeable and took time to explain the marine and bird life we encountered. Highly recommend.

WE LOVE BARRIER ISLAND ECO TOURS!! We are locals and do this every opportunity we can. We have been able to do 2 dolphin sunset cruises in different seasons. The dolphins came very close to the boat (sometimes right up to the boat) and a beautiful sunset to top it off both times. I loved seeing boneyard beach as the sun was starting to go down. The captains were very knowledgeable! So much wildlife we even saw the rare rosette spoonbills!

This was our second time out, first was with my son's therapy group and this time we got to bring my husband and I cannot speak highly enough of our trip! Our tour guide Robert was so knowledgeable, fun and made learning so much fun for us and our kids! We have lived in Charleston for 9 years and the Capers Island Tour is seriously by far the best thing we've done here. Don't miss out!

Ecco the Dolphin Guides and Walkthroughs

Ecco the Dolphin is a unique action-adventure video game developed by Sega and originally released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. In the game, players control Ecco, a young dolphin, as he embarks on a quest to save his pod and the entire ocean from an unknown threat.

The game features innovative gameplay that combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and underwater combat. Players must guide Ecco through a series of underwater environments, interacting with other sea creatures, solving puzzles, and navigating treacherous obstacles. Ecco has various abilities, such as echolocation, which allows him to communicate with other dolphins and navigate dark areas, and a powerful sonar attack to defend against enemies.

Throughout the game, players will encounter a diverse range of marine life and face challenging enemies, including sharks, jellyfish, and hostile creatures from another time and place. As Ecco explores the vast ocean, he will encounter mysterious ancient artifacts and interact with other sea creatures to uncover the truth behind the threat to his pod and the ocean itself. Ecco the Dolphin is known for its stunning underwater graphics, atmospheric sound design, and unique gameplay mechanics. The game received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay, immersive storytelling, and captivating atmosphere. It has since spawned several sequels and has become a cult classic among gamers who appreciate its distinctive blend of action, adventure, and aquatic exploration.

Step into the delightful world of ‘Ecco the Dolphin’ , a gem from the 90s console games. The introductory level, also known as ‘Home Bay’, is all about familiarizing yourself with the controls and mechanics of the game. Whether you play online or on your console, this walkthrough will guide you through the initial steps of the adventure.

Ecco the Dolphin playthrough

Understanding the Basics

First things first, get to know the controls. Here are some basics:

  • Move: Use the directional buttons to guide Ecco through the water.
  • Dash: This is Ecco’s primary means of attack and can also be used to gain a burst of speed.
  • Sonar: Use sonar to communicate with other sea creatures and interact with certain objects.

Understanding the Basics

Exploring Home Bay

As you start in Home Bay, you will notice other dolphins around you. Use your sonar to communicate with them. They provide useful advice and set the narrative for the game.

  • Try following the advice of one dolphin who challenges you to jump out of the water. This can be done by speeding up towards the water’s surface and jumping out into the air. Mastering this technique is crucial as it is a frequent requirement in later levels.
  • Take the time to explore the underwater area. This will help you become comfortable with moving around and controlling Ecco.

Exploring Home Bay

Triggering the Storm

Once you have communicated with the other dolphins and mastered the jump, you can trigger the central event of Home Bay. The aim is to jump as high as you can from the water.

  • Find the location in the center of Home Bay, where there is a small gap between the surface of the water and the rock formation above.
  • Build up speed and jump out from the water into this gap. Doing so will trigger a storm that sucks all life out of Home Bay, leaving Ecco alone. This event starts the main journey of the game.

And there you have it! You’ve completed the first level of ‘Ecco the Dolphin’ . Keep practicing your navigation skills and prepare for the challenges that lay ahead in the deep blue sea.

Navigating the Undercaves

The Undercaves is an intricate network of underwater caves, home to a variety of sea creatures. Here’s a guide to help you:

  • Map Your Way: Use your sonar to explore the environment and detect the living creatures around you. It is essential to familiarize yourself with the cave layout to progress effectively.
  • Manage Air Supply: Remember, Ecco is a mammal and needs to breathe. Be sure to keep an eye on your air gauge and replenish your air supply by finding air pockets within the caves.
  • Spot Dangers: Watch out for jellyfish and crustaceans. You can deal with them by using your dash attack.

Navigating the Undercaves

Problem-solving Underwater

The Undercaves introduces you to puzzle-solving elements of the game. You’ll encounter blocked passages that require some effort to get through:

  • Manipulating Rocks: Certain passages in the Undercaves are blocked by rocks. You need to push these rocks using your dash ability. The rocks can be used to plug harmful vents or open new paths.
  • Discover Glyphs: Glyphs are mysterious crystals that can hinder or assist you. You’ll find a glyph that emits a force field, preventing you from progressing. Use your sonar on it until it deactivates, clearing the way forward.

Problem-solving Underwater

Reaching the Exit

After navigating through the maze-like Undercaves and overcoming the obstacles, you’ll reach the exit and complete the level:

  • The Key Glyph: Near the end of the level, you will find a key glyph. You will need to touch this glyph and then return to the previously encountered glyph. The interaction will remove the force field that was blocking your way, leading you to the end of the level.

With this, you’ve successfully completed the second stage of ‘Ecco the Dolphin’ . From cave-exploring to problem-solving, you are mastering the skills that will guide you through the rest of the game. Remember, this aquatic adventure is best enjoyed when played at your own pace. So, continue exploring, stay curious, and have fun!

The Deep Seas Await: Level 3 Walkthrough for the Ecco the Dolphin Game

In the intriguing aquatic world of The Dolphin’s Epic , the third stage, dubbed “The Undercaves,” invites players to explore vast underwater caves and confront unseen dangers. If you’re playing via console or online, this comprehensive guide will help you navigate the challenges with ease.

THE DEEP SEAS AWAIT

Your main goal is to traverse the cave system, dealing with treacherous currents and deadly enemies. An essential key is to maintain your breath meter, which depletes over time, requiring Ecco to resurface periodically for air. This level’s complexities serve as a reminder of the game’s fascinatingly real depiction of the marine environment.

Instructions

  • Begin by swimming to the right, avoiding the sea urchins that stick to the cave walls.
  • Look out for trilobites along your path, hostile creatures that can harm you.
  • Continue right until you encounter a large rock barrier. Use your sonar to remove it.
  • Swim upwards to replenish your air at the water surface, and then proceed down into the deeper section of the cave.
  • Navigate through the currents in the lower cave area, making sure to avoid contact with the harmful jellyfish.
  • You will encounter a strong current blocking your path. To bypass it, find the glyph and use your sonar on it.
  • Continue right to finish the level, taking care to avoid the various predators and obstacles that block your path.

The third stage of the Dolphin’s Odyssey ups the ante in terms of challenge, offering players an exhilarating deep-sea experience. With patience and practice, you’ll soon be navigating through the Undercaves like a true ocean explorer.
