Mljet national park: dubrovnik to mljet day trip guide [2024].

By far the highlight of my recent trip to Dubrovnik was my day trip to Mljet National Park.

Otherwise known as the Green Island of Croatia, Mljet is a beautiful, unspoilt island shrouded in forest.

If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to other popular Croatian national parks like Plitvice and Krka, the island is bound to capture your heart.

This ultimate Dubrovnik to Mljet day trip guide will explain how to visit Mljet National Park and the best things to see and do!

What is Mljet National Park?

aerial-view-of-mljet-national-park-in-daytime

Situated 23 miles from Dubrovnik and covering an area of around 62 square miles, Mljet is the southernmost of the larger Croatian islands.

Its national park is a large area that takes up about a third of the island.

The park borders two saltwater lakes, inventively named Large Lake (Veliko Jezero) and Small Lake (Malo Jezero).

The larger of the two lakes is home to St Mary’s Island (Sveta Mrija), a popular tourist spot that you’ll likely want to visit.

Here, you’ll find the iconic Crkva Sveta Marije, a beautiful former 12th-century Benedictine monastery that has since turned into a café/restaurant.

Aside from the island, the national park is a haven for natural beauty and outdoor activities so there’s plenty to do here!

Whether it’s swimming in the crystal clear seawater or hiking up to a beautiful viewpoint, there’s no shortage of ways to explore the park.

How long should I spend in Mljet National Park?

island-mound-surrounded-by-water-on-sunny-day

One day is enough time to get a gist of the national park, especially if you catch the first ferry in the morning and the last ferry in the evening.

Opening hours in high season are from 8 am to 8 pm, and 9 am to 5 pm during low season.

If you want the most time on the island, I’d recommend visiting during high season.

However, if you want to take things more slowly or see more than just the national park, you can choose to stay overnight.

There are a number of accommodation options on the island so there’s something to suit every traveller and budget!

The main hotel option is Hotel Odisej in Pomena.

But you’ll also find a number of Airbnbs and camping sites if you’re on more of a budget.

Dubrovnik to Mljet ferry: How to get to Mljet

There are a few ways to get to Mljet, including by sailing cruise.

But this post is going to specifically detail how to do a Dubrovnik to Mljet day trip via ferry.

There’s no airport on Mljet island but  flights to Dubrovnik don’t tend to be too expensive with one-way flights from the UK starting at around £40.

Once you’re in Dubrovnik, the easiest way to get to Mljet is by catamaran fast ferry which is operated by both KRILO and TP Line .

Despite running daily, the ferry timetable varies depending on the time of year so I’d consult the above two websites to find the best time for you!

The ferry can cost anywhere between 55 and 120 Kunas (around 7.5€ – 16€) for a single journey and lasts around one hour and 20 minutes.

It’s a lovely scenic journey but the only facilities onboard are bathrooms (e.g. no shop or cafe) so be sure to stock up on drinks and snacks before the journey if you want them!

Before you know it, the ferry will drop you off at Pomena, a small village and harbour located at the west end of the island.

This is the main entry point to the park and where you’ll start your time on the island!

How to get around Mljet

boats-on-water-next-to-island-in-daytime

When you initially arrive at Mljet, you’ll need to buy an entrance ticket from the kiosk in Pomena.

Tickets start from 70 Kuna (around 7.25€) for adults in the low season, rising to 125 Kuna (around 16.50€) in the high season.

Children under the age of seven can enter the park for free, while children and students must pay 50 Kuna (around 6.60€) in the low season and 70 Kuna (around 9.25€) in the high season.

Once you’ve bought your ticket, it’s time to explore Mljet!

There aren’t too many options for getting around Mljet as the island is relatively unspoilt and unpolluted.

The main public transport option is bus and your best bet is to enquire locally upon arrival for the day’s bus schedule.

There are two main bus routes on the island: the 18 bus that runs from Pomena to Sobra (via Polace and Goverdjari) on the west of the island, and the 19 bus that runs from Sobra to Saplunara (via Prozura and Korita) on the east of the island.

Another easy way to get around Mljet is by taxi, though this will, unsurprisingly, be more expensive.

However, my favourite way to get around the island is by walking!

It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Pomena to Small Bridge (Mali Most), the point of the national park where the two lakes are joined by a narrow canal under a bridge.

From here you can swim, kayak, cycle, or catch a ferry to St Mary’s Island.

How to get to St Mary’s Island in Mljet

aerial-view-of-st-marys-island-in-mljet

To get to St Mary’s Island, you’ll first need to get to Pristaniste.

To do so, all you’ll need to do is hop on board the local minibus service that runs every hour or at least several times a day, depending on the season.

Once at Pristaniste, you can catch the 25-minute ferry which costs 30 Kuna (around 4€) per person.

This boat shuttle tends to run hourly so enquire in advance and time your visit well!

Alternatively, you can rent a sea kayak or small rowing boat to get yourself to the island in about 40 minutes.

6 best things to do in Mljet National Park

people-swimming-in-water-at-mljet-national-park

The beaches in Mljet National Park aren’t the typical sandy beaches you’ve come to know and love.

But that doesn’t make them any less special!

There are numerous small pebble beaches on the shores of the two lakes where you can sunbathe, read a book, or just admire the scenery.

If it’s a typical sandy beach you’re after, you’ll have to travel outside of the national park to Saplunara.

Suplunara Beach is located at the southeastern horn of Mljet and comprises three pine tree-lined beaches.

The landscapes around the beaches are practically untouched and the beaches are quiet and undisturbed!

2. Swimming

people-swimming-in-clear-water-on-sunny-day

Swimming is a fantastic activity to do in Mljet National Park because the water here is far warmer than on the seashores of the island.

This means that many travellers choose to brave the waters all year round!

The most popular swimming spot is by Small Bridge and even there, it’s still relatively quiet.

However, if you venture further afield, especially to quieter parts of Large Lake, you’ll find some fantastic secluded swim spots.

3. Kayaking

kayaker-lifting-yellow-oar-out-of-water

By far my favourite way to explore Mljet National Park is by kayak!

It’s the perfect way to get up close and personal with the lake and admire the beauty of the park from a different angle.

The activity is great for all ages and fitness levels, as the water is generally very calm, and you can take it as slow or as fast as you want.

There are several places within the park where you can hire a sea kayak or canoe but the easiest is probably at Small Bridge.

Its convenient position between the two lakes allows you to easily see both lakes, especially if you don’t want to kayak out too far.

Choose between a solo or a tandem kayak and get ready to hit the water!

4. Walking and hiking

aerial-view-of-mljet-national-park-on-sunny-day

Everyone who knows me knows I love a hike and a great view.

As such, it’s probably unsurprising that one of my favourite ways to explore Mljet National Park is on foot.

And luckily for us keen hikers, there are several walking routes within the national park.

The longest takes you from Pomena (where you arrived by ferry) to the village of Govedjari.

This walking route takes an average of five hours to complete so it’s worth ensuring you have enough time before you embark on this one.

Along the way, you’ll overlook the bays of Liskovje, Stupa, Bijela, Zaklopatica and Rogac, and enjoy some seriously beautiful views.

Don’t forget your camera!

However, there are a handful of other walking routes you can take if you don’t fancy a full-day hike.

Just pick up a guide when you arrive in Pomena and follow the well-marked trails!

old-stone-bridge-and-building-on-sunny-day

Cycling is another of my favourite ways to explore Mljet National Park.

It costs around 200 Kuna (26€) to hire a bike for the day from Small Bridge.

However, there are also several other places you can hire bikes on the lakes.

Whether you’re a cycling pro or are a bit of a nervous cycler, you can rest assured that the traffic-free paths are very cycle-friendly and easy to navigate.

In fact, you’ll find that most of the paths are dominated by bikes so you’re almost better off cycling than walking!

The full circle around the large lake is about 9km so you should allow yourself a few hours to complete the circuit.

This is especially the case if you plan on stopping off for photo, food or swimming breaks!

cross-overlooking-water-on-st-marys-island-in-daytime

You may be thinking that Mljet National Park is just for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

However, it’s a great place to visit for history buffs, too!

Historically, the island was inhabited by both the Illyrians and the Romans.

And as you explore the national park, you’ll stumble across plenty of remnants from both peoples.

For example, in Polace, you’ll find an old Roman palace and a Christian basilica.

If this is a part of the national park that interests you, it’s worth researching the other must-visit spots ahead of your visit so you can easily seek them out for yourself!

Mljet restaurants: where to eat on Mljet

st-marys-island-in-mljet-national-park-on-sunny-day

While in Mljet National Park, I only ate at one restaurant so I can’t personally recommend any others.

However, what I can say is that Restaurant Melita on St Mary’s Island is a fantastic spot for lunch or dinner!

They serve hearty Dalmatian dishes, island specialities and a selection of the best Croatian wines.

And could you ask for more beautiful surroundings?!

I had the most delicious grilled vegetables for starters, followed by a soya mince spaghetti bolognese for mains that they made especially for me as a vegan.

The rest of the restaurants within the national park are concentrated in the villages of Ponema, Polače and Konoba.

These villages are well worth a visit in their own right so why not kill two birds with one stone by going out for food?!

So there you have it: the ultimate Dubrovnik to Mljet day trip guide!

Hopefully, this guide has got you even more excited to visit this absolute gem of a place.

I just know you’re going to love it as much as I do!

  • Day trip from Dubrovnik to Mljet in Croatia

Pack your things and get ready to visit the “green forest” of the Adriatic

  • Ferry Tickets

Walking around the historic gem that is Dubrovnik, one of Croatia’s prettiest and most popular spots, you may see little reason to leave. But we have great news -  there’s plenty to do outside of the city as well. Dubrovnik’s prime location on the Dalmatian coast makes it a great starting point for exploring the nearby islands, such as MIjet.

For total silence, peace and relaxation, board the ferry from the port of Dubrovnik to MIjet and leave the world behind for the day. On this Ferryhopper page, you can find all the information you need for your Dubrovnik - Mljet ferry trip, as well as the best attractions to see in 1 day .

Taking the ferry to Mljet from the port of Dubrovnik

Where is Mljet and how to get there from Dubrovnik?

Mljet island is located 27 km northwest of Dubrovnik in the southern Dalmatian archipelago. You can get here easily by taking one of the many catamarans operating from Dubrovnik, which dock in Sobra, Polače and Pomena.

TP-Line offers direct passenger services to Sobra, Polače and Pomena on Mljet island, while Kapetan Luka runs ferries to Pomena. The fastest way to get to Mljet is to take the 08:00 ferry from the port of Dubrovnik to Sobra. This morning ferry route from Dubrovnik to Sobra is operated daily, so you can choose any day of the week for your day trip to Mljet. The ferry ride lasts 1 hour and the ferry tickets start from around €8.

Alternatively, you can also board the ferry from Dubrovnik to Polače which departs once a day, usually at 09:15 in the morning. Ferries from Dubrovnik to Polače make the crossing in about 1.5 hours and standard tickets cost around €10. The Dubrovnik - Pomena ferry route is operated once a day, but the earliest ferry departs at 15:00 , so it’s not recommended for a day trip.

Why should you visit Mljet?

Mljet is Dalmatia’s most verdant destination and, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, it’s also among the last paradises in the Mediterranean .

One-third national national park, two-thirds pine forest and with little human settlement, Mljet has been a tranquil getaway for millennia. Still, to this day, it remains a natural escape, underdeveloped and underpopulated, and is ideally explored by hikers and cyclists or anyone who is looking for a place to chill out and disconnect.

One day in Mljet: best things to do

It might be known as the greenest of the Croatian isles , but Mljet is also home to clear waters, lovely bays and a thriving marine life. Are you ready to follow Ferryhopper's one-day itinerary to Mljet and explore a little bit of everything this island has to offer? If the answer is yes, then keep scrolling!

1. Paddle around the lakes of Mljet National Park

Mljet’s principal attraction is its National Park occupying the western part of the island. This is, in fact, the oldest national park in the Adriatic. To access the national park, take the ferry from Dubrovnik to Polače, where you can pick up a bike, catch a shuttle, or even walk to the national park. If you end up in Sobra, which is on the other side of the island, you’ll need to take a taxi to the park. You can buy an entry ticket at Polače when you get off the ferry, or at the main ticket office at Pristanište.

From the main ticket office, you can reach the two picturesque saltwater lakes of Veliko and Malo Jezero (“Big Lake” and “Small Lake”) on foot in just a few minutes. Malo Jezero might be the smaller of the two lakes, but it’s undoubtedly the most beautiful, due to its vivid, turquoise waters . It’s also better suited for children , since it's warmer and shallower than Veliko Jezero. Both lakes are home to some interesting creatures, including coral, jellyfish and shellfish. Also, stay on the lookout for the odd mongooses, imported a century ago to rid Mljet of snakes.

There’s plenty of ways to explore the national park, but canoeing or kayaking is by far the best option if you want to see the coastline around these lovely lakes. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle or hike through the park's breathtaking footpaths.

2. Visit St Mary's church and medieval monastery

Mljet National Park’s main site and archaeological treasure is the beautiful former 12th Century Benedictine monastery . It is located on a small island called Sveta Marija (or islet of St Mary) in the center of Veliko Jezero and is now occupied by a restaurant .

Most people get here by a little hourly boat . Visiting the islet of St May is also easy and manageable by kayak or canoe , since the sea is almost always calm. It will take you about 30 minutes to paddle there from Pristanište or Mali Most, a stone bridge connecting the two lakes.

Once you arrive on the tiny island, you are free to explore the old monastery and have lunch at the connected restaurant. This is also a fantastic spot for swimming !

Useful info : the ferry ride is included in your entrance ticket and, therefore, you don't have to pay any additional cost.

3. Go on a hiking or cycling tour and explore Saplunara’s beaches

Hiking and cycling tours will give you the opportunity to discover the rest of the island, including the sandy beaches of Saplunara . Saplunara bay is divided into two beaches - large and small Saplunara. The whole area is surrounded by pine trees and is characterized by breathtaking scenery and views. It is also an ideal place for children and families , since there are many facilities available including a couple of restaurants, a beach bar and a grocery store.

If you're already at Saplunara, you'll be happy to know that Blaće , another sandy oasis in Limuni Bay, is only 20 minutes away. This is a hidden bay with shallow waters, ideal for enjoying the solitude and nature. It is best to come prepared because there isn't much to be found here.

4. Swim at Odysseus Cave

Odyssey's Cave is one of the biggest attractions on the island. This cave is steeped in Greek mythology since it’s named after the mythical Greek hero and King of Ithaca, Odysseus, who was said to have been held captive on the island for 7 years by the goddess Calypso.

You'll find Odysseus sea cave on the southern Mljet coastline near the island’s largest village, Babino Polje . Vineyards, olive groves and turquoise waters line the path that leads to the cave. After walking for around 30 minutes , you will finally arrive at the place that once enchanted Odysseus with its beauty. A set of steep stairs leads to the cave from the land, but we recommend diving into the water and swimming inside.

This limestone cave is especially spectacular around noon during the summer months, when the sun is at its strongest and the sea provides a rainbow of colors. We bet that after visiting the cave, you’ll wish that you could stay here for at least 7 years just like Odysseus.

5. Head back to Dubrovnik by ferry

It is now time to return to Dubrovnik after a day full of exploration in Mljet. The latest ferry back to Dubrovnik departs at 17:35 from Sobra. By 18:40, you'll have arrived in Dubrovniks' port, carrying many memories with you.

If you want to get away from Dubrovnik's cosmopolitan lifestyle, head to Mljet in around 1-1.5 hours and spend some time surrounded by nature and relaxing by the sea! Check all the available crossings on our Map of ferries and book your ferry tickets from Dubrovnik to Mljet on Ferryhopper with no hidden fees .

Mljet national park.

Mljet National Park; escape the crowds of Dubrovnik

If you are in Dubrovnik for more than a couple of days, you MUSTN’T miss the opportunity to visit Mljet National Park on Mljet Island!

Mljet (pronounced  mee-yet ) is Croatia’s greenest island with over 84% of the island covered by forest .  It’s still intact and doesn’t see many visitors, making it the perfect escape from the crowds in Dubrovnik.

It is considered to be among the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic Sea and it is an easy day trip from Dubrovnik.

Mljet is known for its wine, olives, and goat’s cheese, all thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate. Wild untouched nature, the island’s mysticism, olive groves, and vineyards are the best way to describe this magical island. The pine forests of Mljet are among the most preserved forests of that type in the whole Mediterranean and they are truly magnificent.

Mljet National Park covers the entire northwest side of the island. It’s famous for its two lakes, Small Lake and Large Lake, that are fed by the Adriatic Sea by a narrow canal. Large Lake features a small island of St. Mary with a Benedictine Monastery on it.

If you plan to visit Mljet Island, this guide will give you all the necessary information to plan your day trip from Dubrovnik.

There is only one ferry vehicle port situated in Sobra. The other ports, Polače and Pomena are where the catamarans run.

Your best option is to take the catamaran from Dubrovnik to Polače or Pomena as they are closest to the National Park. Avoid arriving at Sobra unless you’re desperate!

Where does the ferry leave from?

You can take the ferry from the main port in Gruž , located 3 km (1.8 miles) from Pile Gate in Old Town.

Buses on Mljet will take you around the island. There’s a bus line number 18 which goes from Pomena to Sobra (through Goveđari, Pristanište, Polače, Ropa, and Babino Polje). Or you can rent a bike.

Once you arrive on the island, the best thing to do is to visit St. Mary Island. There are 2 places from where you can take the boat to St. Mary: Pristanište and Small Bridge .

Getting to the national park from different ports:

From Polače: You can pick up a bike, catch a shuttle, or walk about 40 minutes to the national park.

NOTE: Minibus from Polače to Pristanište is included in your park entry ticket, and it is coordinated with ferry arrival.

From Pomena:  It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the Small Lake and another 10 minutes to the Small Bridge.

From Sobra: If you come on a car ferry into Sobra, it takes about a 1:25 hours by bus on twisty roads to reach Polače or Pomena.

Renting a private boat

This is the most expensive option, but if you’re interested in a customizable private cruise, check out this link .

A day-trip to Mljet from Dubrovnik organized by travel agencies

If you don’t want to think about which port to choose and which ferry to take, and you prefer someone else to plan everything for you, your best option is an organized day-trip to Mljet from Dubrovnik .

This day-trip includes a pick-up and drop off from your place of accommodation, local tour guide, and an entry ticket to the National Park.

Spending the night on the island

Most of the accommodations on Mljet are private, located either in Pomena or Polače. There is only one hotel on the island – Hotel Odisej (3*), located in Pomena.

St. Mary Island – Mljet Monastery

Island in a Lake on an Island

A must-see in Mljet National Park! St Mary Island is a pretty little islet situated on the Large Lake. An island within an island, how awesome is that??

And what could people do on small islands? Build a monastery, of course. The main attraction on the island is the picturesque 12th century Benedictine Monastery, one of the most important monuments of Romanesque culture in Croatia, and among the oldest church complexes in the Adriatic.

FUN FACT: There is an unusual cemetery on this island. Because the soil is so hard, in history they buried people standing up instead of laying down and they reused the holes. Hence hundreds of bodies were buried on a very small surface.

This is a lovely place to wander around and if you wish you can also go for a swim or snorkel.

There is also a local restaurant where you can relax with an overpriced drink while enjoying your pleasant day.

1 hour is more than enough to explore St. Mary Island.

How to get to St. Mary Island?

It’s very easy, just take a boat to the island at Pristanište or Small Bridge (Mali Most), the bridge near the channel between the two lakes. The boat leaves around every hour.

The fare for a boat ride is included in your park admission price. All you have to do is to show it to the boat captain.

What to do in Mljet National Park?

The two main attractions of Mljet National Park are the two lakes, Small Lake and Large Lake. You can stroll along the lakeshore shaded by pine trees, rent a bicycle to explore the park, rent a kayak, and paddle the along the lakes. Or simply swim in the crystal clear sea and catch some rays listening to cicadas.

Most popular activities in Mljet Island:

Renting bicycles and cruising around the lakes is highly recommended!

Cycling around the lakes under the shade of pine trees will clear your head and soothe your mind. Enjoy the view of the turquoise lakes while a summer breeze blows through your hair.

You can rent a bike immediately off the pier at Polače, but I DON’T recommend it. The journey to the national park is an uphill journey with a constant flow of traffic.

What I do recommend is renting a cycle inside the National Park, that’s what most of the people who decide to cycle do. Cycling around here is easy and pleasurable, with quiet, traffic-free lanes dedicated just to the cyclist and pedestrians.

Bicycles can be rented at several places inside the National Park, with wooden cottages along the main road, so you won’t miss it. The best place to rent is situated next to the Small Bridge.

The full circle around the Large Lake is about 9 km. There are plenty of swimming spots so you can stop along the lane for a short swim and rest.

Small Lake and Large Lake are not just interesting phenomena but are also great for kayaking. Paddling around the untouched nature of the lakes is a unique experience.

Those are saltwater lakes fed by the sea, but because they are enclosed you are sheltered from any big waves, which makes kayaking here a great fun for every age and every level of fitness.

There are several locations in the Park where you can rent sea kayaks/canoes. The most popular place to rent is at the selling point near Mali Most (Small Bridge).

If you are staying on Mljet Island for a longer period, check with your host where is the nearest place to rent a kayak. It may be close to your accommodation.

The kayaks are available for one hour to six hours.

Kayaking to St Mary Island

The sea is always calm what makes visiting St Mary Island by kayak easy. This route is very popular and many people are paddling to and from the islet.

You’ll need about 30 minutes to paddle from Mali Most or Pristanište to the islet. The important thing is to take your sunscreen, water, and hat as sunray reflections from the water are very strong. On the St Mary Island, you can have a coffee or refreshment. On your way back you can stop in any place you like to have a swim or just a quick dip if you feel like.

There are many hiking trails all over the island. There is also a 43 km long hiking trail that is split into 4 shorter routes:

Walking Route 1: Pomena to Goveđari (It takes approx 5 hours of walking.)

Walking Route 2: Govedjari to Blato (It takes approx 7 hours of hilly walking.)

Walking Route 3: Blato – Rogovici – Babino Polje (It takes approx 6 hours to complete this, mostly flat route.)

Walking Route 4: Babino Polje – Veliki grad – Sobra (It takes approx 6 hours to complete this walk.)

The trail features great views over the island and neighboring sea channels as well as over Pelješac peninsula and Lastovo Island. All routes are marked with distinguished signs and there are 20 control points on the way. You can get the entire trail map on the island.

Mljet is rich in underwater life that can be seen in the numerous dive sites on Mljet’s southern shore.

One of the most interesting diving spots on Mljet is the Odysseus Cave . The marine life here is exquisite. If you’re lucky, you will notice barracuda, garfish, tuna, octopus, or lobster.

Another interesting location is  Goli Rat Cove , where you will find remains of an antic ship and amphoras which it used to carry. Those amphoras indicate that Mljet is situated on an important maritime route of ancient Greek galleys and sailing in the Adriatic.

Odysseus Cave is a geomorphology phenomenon, located on the southern coast of the Mljet Island, near the village of Babino Polje.

It is a hole that looks like a pit, connected with the open sea by a small tunnel so the bottom is filled with water.

Odyssey’s Cave can be entered from the sea swimming or by a small boat because the entrance is about 4-5 meters wide. Access to land is possible via very steep improvised stairs.

In the summer months, around noon, you can witness an impressive play of light created by the sun’s reflection in the side openings of the cave. It makes natural phenomena and amazing photos. In the cave itself light never comes.

It is named after the legend of Odysseus who was allegedly shipwrecked near the cave and remained trapped for 7 years because of the nymph Calypso, who ruled the island. According to legend, after his shipwreck on the island of Ogygia, Odysseus is held prisoner there for seven years. Beautiful Calypso fell for Odysseus and wanted to make him her immortal husband. But Odysseus didn’t accept her offer – he was dreaming about going back to his Ithaca and Penelope, his wife. Calypso refuses to help him get home, offering him everything from sex to immortality to persuade him to forget Penelope and his family. Odysseus’ longing for Penelope grew so strong that he could bear it no more. He told the goddess Athena of his misery. Athena, being the protector of Odysseus, asked Zeus to demand the release of the hero.

Local people believe that Mljet is ancient Ogygia because Homer in the Odyssey states that the olive trees and vineyards are just next to the shipwreck, like on Mljet. However, this legend is often attributed to Malta.

Probably due to the disinterest of the local population, but also because through history Malta got confused with Mljet.

There is no such thing as a man who waits for his wife for 7 years, so no wonder this is just a legend!

Mljet Island has plenty of beaches located within the bays along the island’s coastline, along with the beaches on the shores of Small and Large Lake.

If you prefer the solitude to the busy vibe of cities, and your idea of the perfect bays and beaches are those far from noise and crowd – then that’s exactly what you will found in Mljet.

Here are the best beaches in Mljet Island:

Saplunara Beach:

Beach type: Sandy

This white sandy beach is situated at the southeastern horn of Mljet Island. Thanks to its location away from the National Park, this beach doesn’t see many visitors so it is peaceful and very quiet. The whole area is surrounded by thick pine trees providing shade. The scenery and views are spectacular. Facilities on the beach include a few restaurants, beach bar, beach rental shop, and a small grocery store.

Saplunara is reachable by car or by bus from the main island’s ports – Sobra, Pomena, and Polače.

Blaće Beach (Limuni Bay):

Beach type:  Sandy

Just 15 minutes walk from Saplunara (literally around the corner) lays another sandy oasis – Blaće Beach. Hidden in wild Limuni Bay which doesn’t attract many visitors, Blaće is a great place for naturists, nudists, and nature lovers. You can sun and swim nude and there will be nobody around to object.

Shallow water doesn’t allow passing sailors to stop here, making this swimming place quiet for the most of time.

Dense pine trees surround the beach, offering plenty of shade on hot sunny days. The facilities here are non-existent, so it is best to come prepared.

There is no public transport to this beach, it is accessible by foot, Vespa, mountain bike, or boat.

Polače Beach

Beach type:  Gravel, sand

Situated on the northern coast of Mljet Island, Polače is the largest bay on the island. If you want to explore the area, the most popular attraction here is the famous 5th-century ruins of a Roman palace.

This bay offers some amazing swimming spots, including the central and sandy beach of the town. Polače Beach is surrounded by trees providing shade, and it has gently sloping shores, making it suitable for young children and non-swimmers.

Close to the beach, you will find gastronomic delights located in the port.

There is the possibility to rent boats and canoes, and there is a diving center in the town for those looking to go a bit deeper.

Small Bridge (Mali Most)

Beach type: Water under the bridge

Swimming at Small Bridge is so much fun! Just lay down on the surface of the water and let yourself float from Small Lake to the Large Lake passing under a Small Bridge.  As water is constantly circulating between two lakes it forms a current right at the spot where the lakes are connected.

This is not the place to spend all day, rather it’s the place to float a couple of times down the current, have fun, and then move on somewhere else.

Sutmiholjska Beach:

One of the most popular pebbly beaches on Mljet, located in the central part of the island between the villages of Ropa and Babino Polje.

A great beach for families with small children and non-swimmers.

It tends to get crowded in the high season, although it is outside of the National Park, but much closer to it than Saplunara.

If you’re looking for a beach with facilities, look no further as Sutmiholjska has a restaurant, café bar, small shop, and rental agency.

Sutmiholjska is easily accessible by a 2.8 km road from Babino Polje. The distance is walkable if the weather is not too hot. There is no public transport to this beach, but you can take the local Pomena-Sobra bus that stops in Babino Polje and grab a taxi or scooter from there.

Okuklje Beach

Beach type:  Concrete plateaus, rocks

The picturesque Bay of Okuklje is portrayed by piers and moored boats. Beautiful little bay on the northern shore of the island, Okuklje is an increasingly popular destination for Mljet tourists in the summer months. The bay is also a popular anchorage spot for sailors as a safe haven in case of bad weather on their way to Dubrovnik. This relaxed quiet village offers several holiday houses and apartments, a few restaurants and cafes. A lot of good swimming spots to enjoy the clear Adriatic sea.

Not recommended for families with small children and non-swimmers as swimming at Okuklje is not very accessible. There are rocky and concrete areas from which stairs lead to the sea. Bring everything you need for a beach day as there are no real facilities on the beach just inside the town.

Small Lake and Large Lake

Beach type: Flat cliffs

Filled with cool, turquoise saltwater, these lakes are the perfect place to refresh your mind, body, and soul.

The best way to enjoy these lakes is to find a hidden spot where you can chill and take a dip. Walk down the lakeshore and choose your private beach hidden under the trees where you can take a dip.

You will notice that every couple and family has their little hidden area on the lakeshore.

  • KatyM80 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Waterfalls amazing but overall not worth it. The trip was a 13 hour day, which we were advised would be a LOT longer in summer due to longer delays at border controls. The first stop wasn’t really necessary, really not much to see there. The waterfalls were absolutely BEAUTIFUL however 1 hour is just not enough time. There is 5/10mins info when you get off the bus then you need to leave 10mins to walk down to the falls and another 10mins to make it back up so you really only have 30/40mins to see them, we could easily have spent 2 or 3 hours here to really get to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The final stop as Mostar is just okay, we weren’t there in peak season but it was still extremely busy. The town itself is souvenir shop after souvenir shop, all selling the same stuff. The view from the old bridge is beautiful though. Would advise to bring cash on this trip as lots of places don’t take card. Also wear supportive footwear as all the streets are cobbles and can be slippery. The tour guide himself was really poor. He was very negative throughout the whole trip telling stories of how what we see isn’t the real Croatia, how they are all very poor and badly paid, stories about drug smuggling across the borders and how next time it could easily be explosives! He was also very insistent that everyone ate at his friends restaurant in Mostar, he gave everyone vouchers for a “free welcome drink (a shot) and dessert (an oblong shape biscuit soaked in syrup and honey which wasn’t to our taste at all), then showed everyone a picture of the dish we should get, as soon as we got off the bus he marched us all through the town and brought us straight to this restaurant and reminded everyone to give in the vouchers. He clearly gets commission of this. Overall the tour is not worth all the travelling and listening to the negativity of the guide, plus if you are taller than 5ft 6” prepare for your legs to be crushed on the bus! If we were to go again we would rent a car to go to the waterfalls and actually get to enjoy it. Read more Written 4 May 2024

Our guide, Sean, was an excellent driver and made sure to tell us about the history of Montenegro. He was also very responsive to requests, like stopping for toilet or coffee breaks. I only have one suggestion: in Kotor, I do not recommend the recommended restaurant. Though the view was great, the service was quite slow, and we were surprised at the end when the waiter told us splitting the check was impossible. He also did not have change. I think simply eating street food would have been preferable and would have allowed us more time to explore Kotor. However, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the rest of the tour, including our guide Sean, was. Read more Written 30 April 2024

Highly recommend paying the little extra to visit Our Lady of the Rocks (there’s also nothing to do at the first stop). Kotor old city is lovely to walk around and is similar to Dubrovnik old town but different so worth exploring. We paid €15 each to do the walk to the top of Kotor Fortress, which was well worth it for the views and best way to see the old city. Mljet Island

Mljet  island is one of the  Croatian islands  that is also a National Park. Historically considered as one of Dubrovnik’s islands (beside Elafiti Archipelago ), Mljet is situated 14.5 nautical miles from Dubrovnik (about 27 kilometers).

The island has just over a thousand permanent inhabitants. Conveniently connected by daily ferry boat lines with Dubrovnik and daily car ferry crossing to the Croatian mainland (Prapratno@ Peljesac), Mljet is one of the most popular islands to visit while holidaying in the Dubrovnik region .

Swimming in the lakes of Mljet National Park

Table of Contents

The best time of the year to visit Mljet  is in May and June and September and October. These are the months that are less crowded as opposed to July and August when the island gets busy with people on the summer holidays. The weather is milder than in July and August (when heath can rise up to 40°C) which is suitable for any outdoor activity including open water swimming, hiking, cycling, and snorkeling . The average sea temperatures are above 20 °C, still great for swimming, especially within the salted lakes.

Croatia Hotels - Book Now!

Weather in Mljet

Weather in Mljet is very similar to the weather in other south Dalmatian islands, meaning spring and autumns are milder (temperatures up to 20 C) while summers (July & August) are hot with temperatures up to 40 C.

Winter, early spring, and late autumn (November to March) can get pretty cold here, due to the chilly Bura wind that is typical for the area. All villages inside and away from the coast are well sheltered from Bura, although the average temperatures are lower and you do need some form of heating.

National Park Mljet - St Mary's Island @ Veliko Jezero (Large Lake)

How Long Should You Visit

Mljet, with its two stunning lakes, considered as one among the Adriatic’s most beautiful islands, is an ideal island to visit for at least a day trip from Dubrovnik. It is just 1 hr 20 minutes by fast catamaran ferry from the town. I would say that the minimum visit is at least 1 whole day. Two days (48 hrs) are ideal.

Overnight on the island and see all the attractions (St.Mary’s Benedictine Monastery , Polače Palace, and Saplunara Beach) with enough time to swim in some of the best beaches and do some hiking or cycling around.

Book Hotel in Croatia

A week or longer is fine for people who are looking for a slow holiday with plenty of outdoor opportunities in an amazing natural environment. So, you’ll need a day, two, or three to do it justice.

Benedictine Monastery @ St Mary's Island, Mljet National Park

Best Things to do in Mljet

  • Visit the two salted lakes, the centrepieces of the whole island
  • See the main attraction on the island which is the Benedictine Monastery at St Mary’s Islet in the Large Lake
  • Visit Polače village that features unusual ruins of the ancient Roman palace from 5th century AD
  • Spend a day on the Saplunara sandy beach
  • Hike to the top of the hills to enjoy the views over to Peljesac and Korcula island (see below map)
  • check which guided tours are available and what are the latest prices for hiking, diving or kayaking on the island –  click here

According to legend, Odysseus used the island as a safe haven on his trips among the islands in the Greek archipelagos. Ancient Greeks called the island ‘Melita’ after ‘honey’ and their sailors used the island as a refuge against storms and as a stopover to get fresh water from Blace lakes.

The Romans owned the island from 5 BC and later on, the island was ruled by Byzantine Empire until 1333 when Mljet was granted to Benedictines. In 1410 it becomes a part of Ragusa, the Dubrovnik republic when many of Dubrovnik’s captains build their summer residences along its coast.

Mljet National Park

Mljet national park was established in 1960 and covers the northwestern part of the island well known for its lush vegetation, large pine forest, and two amazingly scenic saltwater lakes Large and Small Lake (Veliko & Malo Jezero) which are about 4 km long.

The area is an unspoiled oasis of tranquillity that, the lakes are excellent for swimming and snorkeling, with crystal clear water of turquoise color (see photos). This is the most visited part of the island, covered in untouched Mediterranean forest, two lakes, and features two villages – Pomena and Polače and the small hamlet of Babine Kuce right at the edge of the Large Lake.

The entrance to the park is right within the villages where you get an entrance ticket and a map. From the entrance on, you enter into the area where cars are forbidden.

The lakes are encircled by tarmac paths, ideal for walking or cycling where you can choose numerous spots to stop and bath in warm and clear waters, perfect for bathing. Water in these lakes is much warmer than anywhere else along the island’s coast.

Small Lake’s high saline concentration is considered to have some healing properties for rheumatism and skin eczema.

Benedictine Monastery at St Mary’s Islet

The most interesting feature of the park is St Mary’s islet and its 12th-century Benedictine monastery with St Mary’s Church, both encircled by high stone-built walls and guarded by a tall defensive tower. Abandoned in the 19th century by the monks, the monastery nowadays features a nice restaurant, a cafe, and a souvenir shop. Find out more

You get to this atmospheric islet by National Park’s owned, sun-powered (completely silent) boats from Pristaniste spot, which is right next to Mali Most (the connecting stone bridge between Large and Small Lake). The free boat ride is included in your entrance ticket.

Small sun-powered ferry boat takes you around Large lake in Mljet National Park

Veliko & Malo Jezero

Malo and Veliko Jezero aka Small and Large Lake are the main features of the National Park, the two salt lakes that are part of the National Park. It takes just 15 minutes to walk from Pomena village to the lakes.

From there, take a free boat ride from the Mali Most pier to the corner of Large Lake, where you will see the Otok Svete Marije islet with a church and Benedictine monastery.

Large Lake is connected to the sea by the narrow canal in Soline hamlet. The currents here are pretty strong and can be especially hard to swim during the periods between high and low tide. On the other side of the lake, at Mali Most, the tides create a shallow water slide that people like to swim in. It is a shallow spot, fun to play with.

Mljet For Families With Kids

Relaxing and densely forested shores of the Large Lake

Kids will definitely love Mljet especially the National Park bit. There are no cars here, just bicycles and kayaks. Small Lake is an ideal beach for children where they can slide on the tide that runs between two lakes. Another great place for children is Saplunara sandy beach , where they can easily get into the water, play with the sand, build sandcastles and interact with other children. You will find in both spots a basic cafe, ice cream kiosk, and candy shop to keep kids entertained.

There are plenty of places to swim and sunbathe on the island. Read more details in a separate article that covers the beaches on the island and see the map below:

Best hikes/walks

Hiking in Mljet National Park on a warm summer's day

The highest peak on the island is Velji Grad, 513 meters. There are numerous hiking/walking trails along the whole island so if you are visiting in hiking season (not July or August, when the weather is very hot) you will have plenty of trails to choose from.

The trails are well marked. Some are suitable for beginners, such as the ones that lead along both lakes. Part of these trails are shaded by pine trees and other vegetation (see above photo). Make sure you have enough water with you at any time of the year.

It is very likely you will see mongooses on your way. They were imported here from the far east to deal with snakes that were overtaking the island at the time. Nowadays, there are no snakes, just mongooses crossing forest paths.

If you’re staying in or near Polače village, you can walk over to the Large Lake by a well-signed forest path that leads via the Montokuc hill (245 m) in about 50 minutes. From the top of the hill, you will get amazing views over the Park. You can buy a hiking map in the small shop in Pomena or Polače when you get your entrance ticket.

Numerous hiking trails lead through the vineyards on Mljet island

Cycling & Kayaking

There is a popular tarmac cycling path around Large Lake. You can rent a bike on several spots within the Park and this is a great and handy way to explore the Lakes any time of the year. The cycling path is partly shaded by tall trees which make it easy to cycle even if it’s very hot. You can also rent kayaks to explore Large Lake, St Mary’s islet, and Monastery. They can also be rented at the same spots where you get your bicycle – at Mali Most bridge.

if you are into scuba diving, get in touch with aquatica-mljet.hr the company that does diving trips on the island. They are located in Pomena village and can get you to diving spots that include some shipwrecks from WW2 and antique Roman wreck that features amphorae and other ceramics from the time. On the south side of the island, you can dive into a couple of deep walls too. Here is a video:

Where to Stay

Mljet has numerous private rooms and apartments available to rent. Most of them have a terrace or a private balcony with sea views. If you are staying in any of the seaside villages, any location should be good as from most of the houses you will have a sea-views from at least one room. There is just one hotel on the island, Hotel Odisej in Pomena.

When to Make Your Reservations

If you are after booking the best places to stay, make your reservation as soon as you can. That particularly applies to July and August when is the busiest part of the year. For the rest of the year, it is less busy, but you should still book your accommodation in advance. For the best hotel prices and to check what is currently available  check here .

How to get from Dubrovnik to Mljet National Park?

If you spend more than a couple of days around  Dubrovnik Old Town  try not to miss the opportunity to visit  Mljet National Park  on Mljet Island. Once you arrive and settle in Dubrovnik, you will find several opportunities to visit Mljet, using either  day trips  organized by Dubrovnik’s travel agents (which are more expensive) or by using public transport (i.e.  local ferries  that are much cheaper ).

If you are a foot passenger , there is a fast ferry catamaran that departs daily from  Dubrovnik (port of Gruz)  to  Mljet . This is the fastest and most convenient way to travel to the island. The alternative is the bus ride & slow ferry. If you are driving and plan to use a car ferry, there are  no direct car ferries  between these two places. You would need to drive along the coast and cross by car ferry from Prapratno (Peljesac).

A  taxi ride between Dubrovnik and Mljet  lasts about 2 hours including a ferry crossing from Prapratno to Mljet (Sobra). The current price quoted to me is 120 Euros. The quote from UBER is 75 Euros to Prapratno (see quote/map below). If you take Uber to Prapratno, you can then cross as a foot passenger on the cheap car ferry to the island. This is a good travel option if 3 to 4 people travel together and share the costs of the taxi, plus you will save on ferry crossing price too. Once on the island, you can get another taxi to your destination.

Dubrovnik Airport to Mljet

If you are arriving at Dubrovnik airport and plan to travel straight to the island, here are your options:

Popular routes: Split to Dubrovnik , Dubrovnik to Split , Hvar to Dubrovnik , Dubrovnik to Hvar

  • Option 1 – get from the airport to the ferry port and from there get on the ferry to Mljet. Bear in mind that the last ferry to the island is at 16:30
  • Option 2 – If your arrival at the airport is later than 16:30, get a taxi or Uber to Prapratno and take the car ferry from there. The latest ferry from Prapatno is at 20:30, so if your flight arrives at 18:30 or earlier, you can make it to the island (taking into consideration passport control & luggage collection at the airport). The total cost is about 120 Euro (see below)

There is also a Dubrovnik airport bus shuttle to  Prapratno  for a ferry connection to Mljet island  which you can use for day trips too – see info and arrange private transfer here

Day Trip by local transport

Mljet island is situated across the channel, about 15 nautical miles from Dubrovnik. It takes just under two hours to sail there by fast catamaran ferry. Check the  catamaran ferry schedules at this link .

In the summertime, you will depart at 8 am from Dubrovnik’s port Gruž ( ferry terminal  in front of Hotel Petka) by  Nona Ana ferry  and will arrive at 9.50 in  Polače, Mljet  – the place in the near vicinity of National Park.

You will then have the rest of the day to explore the National Park ( see map ), visit both lakes, have lunch in one of the local restaurants and come back to Polače to get a return journey at 5 pm arriving in Dubrovnik, port Gruž at about 7 pm.

In the wintertime, or  out of the main tourist season  (November to April) the ferry schedule is not as convenient for a day trip, as the ferry leaves for Mljet in the afternoon and sails back to Dubrovnik in the morning, so you will have to spend at least one night on the Mljet. (If you decide to do so, check for  Mljet Island accommodation here .)

Before booking, try to work out if is it cheaper and more convenient for your own needs to spend a night or two on Mljet, or book a much more expensive day trip by a local agent, spend all day on Mljet and come back to Dubrovnik in the evening in your  Dubrovnik accommodation .

Important warning : If you decide to use Dubrovnik to Sobra fast catamaran, it sails to Sobra village, which is far away from Mljet National Park. Of course, you can always rent a car, take a taxi,  or use your bicycle for cycling to the park but it will take you a long time (the distance between Sobra and Polače is about 25 km). So, you will be better off if you get to Polace or Pomena instead.

Update: There are now  three fast ferries  that sail from Dubrovnik to Mljet, to 3 different ports: Pomena, Polače, and Sobra. All offer flexible and convenient departure times (departing in the morning, returning in the afternoon) for day trips to the island and National Park –  see all info here

  • Seaside32014152459 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great private charter for day trips and island hopping We had a fantastic experience with Sea Breeze who took us from Dubrovnik to Korcula and then Korcula to Solta a few days later. Between the islands, they did a great job of showing us some wonderful spots for swimming and lunch. Lovely boat stocked with beer and water. Super nice skipper (I sadly forgot his name since it was awhile ago) who even helped a bunch of stranded Argentines restart their stalled boat. Read more Written February 18, 2024

Everything about the trip was perfect, we felt very comfortable on the boat and we had plenty of time to enjoy all that the islands had to offer. Mljet National Park is so beautiful, it was nice to have an opportunity to swim at St. Mary's Island. Lopud and Kolocep were also beautiful quaint areas with amazing history in such a short ride. It was peaceful compared to Dubrovnik. Being with a small tour, with local knowledge was the best! I highly recommend Sea Breeze for a great day of adventure and independent exploration. The boat was fabulous and he drove it really well, we left really safe at all times. They made sure we had all the details that we needed and that we were looked after all day. The stops were fabulous - a highlight cycling around the lakes of mijet national park. The sandwich included was tasty and we were provided with water all day. Our tour guide Marko spoke great English, and we ended up spending time at Mljet natl park, which pictures don’t do justice! A must see if you’re in Croatia. We also took a bike ride around the island and visited some sandy beaches and were able to snorkel in odyssey cave. Some people were cliff jumping at the cave, but it was a little to high for me. Overall I would highly recommend Sea Breeze Tours, they were accommodating to all our needs, and showed us a side of Croatia otherwise reserved for locals. Very much the highlight of our trip! Dubrovnik to sobra.

If you are looking to catch a ferry from Dubrovnik to Mljet there are a few things you should know . First of all between Dubrovnik and Mljet, there are passenger-only ferries or catamarans as we usually call them. Secondly, on Mljet Island there are 3 ports, Sobra , Polace and Pomena all 3 have a connection from Dubrovnik, so you should check which one is the better in relation to your accommodation on Mljet, or even better pick the ferry first and then accommodation, otherwise, you might have to spend quite a bit on a Taxi to move between the places. If you continue your travel e.g from Mljet to Hvar or Mljet to Lastovo , it is also wise to check the departure port for those catamarans before selecting your accommodation on the Island.

Krilo Kapetan Luka routes from Dubrovnik to Pomena cost 16€.

15 INCREDIBLE Day Trips from Dubrovnik

Updated October 28, 2019

// By Margherita

Is Dubrovnik too crowded for you? Guess what – we know just what to do! Here we’ll tell you all about the 14 best day trips from Dubrovnik, including island-hopping and hiking day trips!

Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most popular and fascinating cities. Its Old Town has been listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its rich history and stunning architecture, dating back to the time when the city was a bustling maritime republic.

The huge stone walls surrounding the Old Town were built between the 11th and 17th centuries to protect this former city-state that for centuries rivalled with Venice as a trading port.

With its dazzling paved streets and white facades, Dubrovnik is full of things to see and do – including Baroque churches, palaces, fountains, squares filled with cafés, restaurants serving delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and sunset bars built right on top of cliffs.

For a long time, Dubrovnik remained a kind of ‘hidden secret’ on the Southern Dalmatian coast. I remember visiting in the late Nineties , only a few years after the siege that brought the city to its knees for 7 months. Bullet holes were still visible on walls, and only a handful of tourists roamed the streets.

dubrovnik-coast-via-dinarica

Then, we headed to Dubrovnik again in February 2006 , and saw dozens of locals waited at the bus station with placards advertising their spare room. There were indeed more tourists around , but you could still roam Dubrovnik in total solitude, climbing on and off the city walls at will.

Fast-forward a decade or so, and Dubrovnik is one of the worst victims of overtourism in Europe. Two things have contributed to this – the decision of HBO power-series Game of Thrones to use Dubrovnik as one of its filming locations , and the rise in cruise tourism.

Visit Dubrovnik now, and you’ll probably feel overwhelmed – especially in summer, when horde upon horde of cruise ship groups descends on the Old Town every single morning. Want to climb up the city walls? It will be €29 and a three-hour wait. Want to have lunch? There you are, some microwaved faux-Italian for about as much as you’ll pay in Venice.

dubrovnik-srd-mountain-sunset

The solution? Head out of the city! Dubrovnik’s position on the Southern Dalmatian coast, surrounded by islands on one side and mountains on the other, means it’s easy to go island-hopping from Dubrovnik or on hiking day trips.

Those who are ‘collecting countries’ will also be very pleased to know that you can go on day trips from Dubrovnik to both Bosnia and Montenegro.

Here are our 15 favourite day trips from Dubrovnik to get you started!

Island-Hopping Day Trips from Dubrovnik

1) elafiti islands .

sipan-island-via-dinarica-sunset

Easily reachable by boat from the city, the Elafiti Islands are among the easiest (and best!) day trips from Dubrovnik.

The archipelago is composed by a total of 14 islands and small islets, of which only three are inhabited – Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. Kolocep and Lopud are also entirely car-free, which makes them the perfect getaway if you’re looking for some peace and quiet.

With their warm and quiet waters, stunning landscapes and fascinating villas overlooking the sea, the Elafiti Islands are perfect for relaxing and practicing water sports such as swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

You can choose to spend your entire day sunbathing , or enjoying one of the many tours that circles the three main islands.

Foodies take note – Šipan Island is also home to the highest concentration of olive trees per capita in Europe, and you’ll find some really great konoba (traditional restaurant).

Getting to the Elaphiti Islands:  there are four daily departures from Gruz Port with Jadrolinija. The first stop is Koločep (30 minutes), then Lopud (1 hour), and finally Šipan (1 hour 15 from Dubrovnik). However, please note that visiting all three islands in one day is near impossible – you better opt for one of the tours below!

  • Dubrovnik: Elafiti Islands Day Cruise on a Karaka Ship
  • Elaphite Islands Day Trip with Lunch from Dubrovnik
  • Galleon Cruise around the Elaphiti Islands
  • From Dubrovnik: Elaphite Island-Hopping with Lunch

2) Lokrum

lokrun clear water dubrovnik

Lokrum Island is the perfect destination for a quick island-hopping day trip from Dubrovnik , as it’s only a 20 minutes boat ride from the city, and you can depart right from the harbour in the Old Town (rather than having to cross the city to get to the larger Gruz Port!)

No cars are allowed on the island, so wear a comfy pair of shoes and be prepared to walk! One of the coolest things to do in Lokrum is hike to Fort Royal , which is located on the highest peak and is a former French garrison which looks out over the island and Dubrovnik.

You can also hike to the centre of the island to visit a shallow salt lake, and explore the ruins of a 15th-century monastery and a 12th-13th century basilica – Game of Thrones lovers take note , these last two locations were used as a setting for the city of Qarth in season 2!

After all the hard work is done, make sure you also enjoy a nice lunch at one of the local restaurants, or go sunbathing at the beach!

Getting to Lokrum:  frequent departures by ferry, at least twice an hour, from the small harbour in the Old City. Travel time is 20 minutes.

mljet island from dubrovnik

The island of Mljet is the perfect island-hopping day trip for travellers who like to be surrounded by nature.

This island includes one of Croatia’s national parks , and it is often overlooked by most tourists. Those who do make it to Mljet will be rewarded with picturesque beaches, small villages, and naturally the national park, covering the entire north-western part of the island, which is fun to explore by bike.

Easily accessible by boat from Dubrovnik , Mljet is the ideal place to take a day off from the bustle of the mainland. Some of the best things to do on a Mljet day trip are taking a road trip to explore the island, hiking to Odysseus Cave, biking around the lakes, and naturally tasting the freshly caught seafood at one of the local restaurants.

Getting to Mljet:  there are daily ferries from Gruz Port in Dubrovnik to Mljet taking two hours each way, but then you’ll have to find your way around the island – probably not worth doing for a day trip. We recommend opting for a day trip instead!

hvar panorama

Hvar is without a doubt one of Croatia’s most charming islands. It takes about 4 hours to get there from Dubrovnik, so it can indeed be visited as a day trip, but we recommend staying longer if possible.

Hvar is a popular destination among celebrities – it’s a large island, but it still manages to maintain some secluded getaways, with quiet beach bars and traditional villages.

One of the top things to do in Hvar is visiting the many beaches you can find all around the island – Dubovica and Pokonji Dol beaches are two of the best, and they’re not far to get to from Hvar Town.

While you’re there, don’t forget to go exploring Hvar Town , with its crowded cobblestone streets filled with shops, bars and restaurants.

To take some truly great pictures head up to the fortress of Fortica , atop the highest part of the town. Ah, and before you leave, don’t forget to taste the local wines, try some cheese from Pag, and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Getting to Hvar:  in high season, there are daily ferries travelling between Dubrovnik and Hvar in the morning and afternoon, making day trips possible. Travel time is 3 hours each way.

korcula from water

Another top island-hopping day trip from Dubrovnik! There are actually many reasons to visit Korcula – touring the Medieval streets of Korcula Town , visiting the house where locals claim explorer Marco Polo was born, taking pictures of St. Mark’s Cathedral and other Renaissance buildings.

However, nature is what makes Korcula really worth visiting. The island is full of crystalline, idyllic bays and beaches – Bačva beach is one of the best if you truly want to be alone, as access is only via a narrow staircase, or head to Lumbarda for either rocky Bilin Žal, or sandy Vela Pržina , the best beach in Korcula according to locals.

Yet, the real reason to visit Korcula is getting lost exploring its winding roads and villages, by bike if possible! Whatever you do, don’t miss sampling a glass of local wine. Korcula, together with the nearby Peljesac Peninsula (which can easily be combined as a day trip from Dubrovnik!) is one of the best wine producing areas in Croatia.

Getting to Korcula:  in high season, it’s possible to take a ferry to and from Korcula , departing at 7 or 9 am and returning at about 4.30 pm. To save yourself the hassle and make sure you don’t get stuck on the island, consider taking a tour!

Day Trips from Dubrovnik to Montenegro

reasons to visit montenegro kotor bay

Kotor is without a doubt one of the best places you can visit in Montenegro , and one of the easiest to visit as a day trip from Dubrovnik!

The medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has a rich artistic and cultural heritage, narrow cobblestone streets that open on small charming squares, and is surrounded by luxuriant and largely unspoiled nature.

The Old Town is a stark contrast to the chaotic streets nearby. Explore the quiet and fascinating little pedestrian streets filled with shops, cafes and restaurants.

To fully admire the Gulf of Kotor and its winding, fjord like harbour you can climb up the Kotor City Walls, that will lead you high above the medieval town. It’s bit of a hike, but it’s absolutely worth it!

If you want to see more of Montenegro , you can tour some of the pretty fishermen’s villages across the bay from Kotor (like Muo or Prcanj ), visit Perast and Saint George’s Island, or combine Kotor with a day trip to Budva!

Getting to Kotor: there are several daily buses between Kotor and Dubrovnik, with travel time ranging from 2 to 2 and a half hours. To make things easier, opt for a day trip!

sveti stefan budva montenegro

Many day tours from Dubrovnik combine the two cities of Kotor and Budva. If Kotor is best known for its walls and relaxed attitude, Budva is the place to visit if you’re in a party mood.

Inside the Old Town walls you’ll find a small but charming town with narrow pedestrian streets, places of historical and cultural interest, shops and restaurants.

Budva is also well known for its pebble and sand beaches , where you can rent sun beds and umbrellas for just a few euros and enjoy a drink at one of the many bars in the area. It’s a great idea for a relaxing Montenegro day trip from Dubrovnik!

Getting to Budva: there are at least 9 daily buses connecting Dubrovnik and Budva, taking as little as 2 and a half hours each way.

Day Trips from Dubrovnik to Bosnia

mostar bridge aerial view

Known for its picturesque Old Bridge and its souvenir shops, Mostar is one of the most visited Bosnian cities. Its compact historic centre, and the fact it’s only just over 2 hours away, makes it the perfect destination for a day trip from Dubrovnik.

Mostar’s famous bridge, the Stari Most , is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was destroyed in 1993 during the Balkan War, and rebuilt to its former glory in 2004.

Nowadays, it’s the most popular tourist attraction in town – not just because it’s a great photo opportunity, but also because you’ll be able to see local daredevils (and tourists!) brave the 20+ meter jump into the chilly waters of the Neretva river.

The city centre of Mostar is filled with traditional restaurants, market stalls, mosques, souvenir shops and historical buildings. Mostar is the perfect place to experience the local cuisine and, if you take a walk around the market stalls, getting a glimpse of the traditional Bosnian way of life.

Getting to Mostar:  buses travel daily from Dubrovnik to Mostar, taking approximately 3 hours each way.

9) Sarajevo

sarajevo view

Sarajevo is definitely the number one destination to visit in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s probably too far for a day trip from Dubrovnik (definitely if you want to use public transport!) but if this is your only time in the Balkans, we highly recommend visiting.

It is important to know the history of Sarajevo to fully understand it and appreciate it.

Sarajevo witnessed the outbreak of the First World War, has undergone years of communism as part of Yugoslavia, and suffered its own bloody civil war in the early 1990s.

The city now offers plenty of attractions and activities , such as the Latin Bridge , the Kovači Memorial Cemetery , the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum, the Jewish Museum and the old bazaar, also known as Baščaršija , where you can try lots of traditional food.

Getting to Sarajevo:  travel time by bus is 6 hours each way, too far for a day trip! Spend the night or opt for a private tour instead.

10) Medjugorje

Best known as the perfect destination for spiritual and religious reflection , and popular site of Catholic pilgrimage due to reports of alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children, Medjugorje is also a place for relaxation and cultural sightseeing.

Among the most popular places you should visit in Medjugorje there’s the Church of St. James , symbol of the Parish of Medjugorje, and Apparition Hill , with its Statue of Our Lady that commemorates the spot where She appeared.

You can also climb the Cross Mountain , walk along the Via Domini and spend some time in reflections and meditations at the Blue Cross.

To extend your Bosnia day trip from Dubrovnik , you can hike to the Kravice waterfalls, which is a great place for swimming, fishing and enjoying the surrounding nature.

Getting to Medjugorje: Medjugorje is just two hours drive from Dubrovnik, but there’s only one daily bus. If you really want to go on a day trip, your best bet will be renting a car or going on a tour.

11) Trebinje

trebinje-herzegovina-view

Country-collectors looking for a Bosnia day trip from Dubrovnik , did you know that Trebinje is only 30 km from Dubrovnik, making it by far the easiest place to reach.

The only issue is that there aren’t many daily buses, and timetables change constantly and aren’t often updated online. For a day trip from Dubrovnik , you’d better rent a car or opt for a taxi.

We visited Trebinje a few years ago during our week in Herzegovina and loved the chilled atmosphere of the town. It’s kind of like a mini Sarajevo – there’s a Turkish neighbourhood reminiscent of Baščaršija, a blend of mosques and Orthodox churches, and not far from town you can also visit Trvdos Monastery , with its own wine cellar.

Alternatively, if you want to spend your day trip from Dubrovnik hiking and exploring nature , we recommend heading to Biela Gora , a mountain on the border between Herzegovina and Montenegro. To do that, you can get in touch with Sinda Kunic on his website!

Getting to Trebinje: there are two daily buses, double check at the bus station in Dubrovnik for the latest departure times.

Hiking Day Trips from Dubrovnik

12) kravice waterfalls.

kravice waterfalls bosnia

Would you like to visit Plitvice Lakes , but you’re afraid you’ll be stuck in crowds the whole day? Guess what – Kravice Waterfalls is the perfect solution for a nature and hiking day trip from Dubrovnik!

This is probably one of Bosnia’s best kept secrets , and it can be easily combined with a visit to Mostar. At Kravice you’ll find a rock amphitheatre with 28 meter-high waterfalls, and to make matters even better, you’re allowed to swim in the stunning turquoise waters!

You can also rent boats, hike around the waterfalls, or simply sit and admire the waterfalls with a drink and a hot meal (make sure you try cevapi !) from one of the bars. This day trip is really worth doing from Dubrovnik , and it’s just a matter of time before Kravice turns into a new version of Plitvice – so get there while you can!

Getting to Kravice:  reaching Kravice for a day trip from Dubrovnik by public transport is impossible. Opt for a tour instead!

13) Peljesac Peninsula

cavtat peninsula sunset

The Peljesac Peninsula is the perfect day trip from Dubrovnik for all the food and wine lovers out there, as it’s one of the best Croatian wine regions.

One of the best things to do is visiting local wineries , and naturally tasting amazing food at one of the many restaurants of the peninsula.

The Peljesac Peninsula is also a great place to relax, explore the historical site s, such as the fortification walls in Ston, sunbathe at the beach and go scuba diving or windsurfing.

Despite the increase in popularity of the area among tourists, Peljesac remains relatively offbeat – it’s also a wonderful hiking destination, and there’s a long tradition among locals to hike Sveti Iljia mountain , offering great views over the coast and Peljesac Channel from the summit. This is a great hiking day trip from Dubrovnik!

Getting to the Peljesac Peninsula: there are multiple buses (every 2/3 hours) travelling between Dubrovnik and Ston, the first town on the Peljesac Peninsula. Travel time is just over an hour each way.

Day Trips from Dubrovnik to Other Places in Croatia

cavtat golden hour

Cavtat is the perfect destination on the Croatian mainland if you want to escape the tourist crowds. It’s only a short 20 minute drive from Dubrovnik, and its beaches and waterfront are the perfect places to relax – ideal for a day trip from Dubrovnik.

Cavtat is divided into two bays , of which Luka is the larger, and there is a nice footpath following the coastline, that can be traveled in 30 minutes.

Also, don’t miss visiting the Old Town , built in classic Croatian style with cobbled streets and historical buildings. While wandering around the streets, make sure you check out St. Nicholas Church , the Rector’s Palace and the Racic Mausoleum.

The two beaches closest to the Old Town are perfect to relax in the sun, swimming and practising water sports. The waterfront is a good option for lunch break as it’s filled with cafes and restaurants.

Getting to Cavtat:  this is probably the easiest day trip from Dubrovnik! Suburban bus number 10 travels from Dubrovnik to Cavtat every 45 to 60 minutes, taking about 20 mins. It’s a great place to visit even just for half day!

Even though the city often fails to impress at first sight, there are many things to do in Split , making it a great destination for a day trip or extension from Dubrovnik – especially if you’re into history.

Spend your time exploring the Old Town , climbing to the top of the Bell Tower of St. Domnius Cathedral and strolling along the Riva Promenade . Don’t forget to check out Diocletian’s Palace , the emperor’s retirement home, situated in the very centre of the Old Town.

To end your day off, explore the markets and taste the traditional food and wines at one of the many restaurants in town.

Getting to Split:  there are hourly bus departures from Dubrovnik to Split, taking 4 hours each way. So, it’s a LONG day trip – but it could be done, especially in summer when the days are long. Otherwise, try to spend at least a night in Split!

The 13 best things to do in Dubrovnik

T here is much to experience in Dubrovnik, from tracing the mighty city walls and exploring scenes from Game of Thrones, to spending the day on a four-poster bed by the sea, with an icy cocktail in hand.

Below our expert gives the low-down on the city's most incredible experiences, while here are our in-depth guides devoted to Dubrovnik's best hotels , restaurants , bars and other nightlife , plus how to spend a weekend in the city .

Find things to do by area

  • Outside of the Old Town

Out-of-town excursions

Circle the city walls.

The medieval walls afford ever-changing views out to sea and over the old town, and hark back to the 13th century. They are best explored with a full-circuit, just over a mile's walk along the battlements. Further reinforcements, including several imposing towers, were added in the 15th century, to protect the city against the Ottoman Turks.

Insider's tip:  To dodge the crowds, check how many cruise ships will be in Dubrovnik on any particular day on the  Dubrovnik Port Authority , and then pick what looks like the quietest date. Arrival and departure times are included on the site so you might find a morning or afternoon with no ships in town..

Step back into the 18th century

The Rector's Palace is unmissable. Under the Republic of Ragusa (14th-19th century), the chief citizen (rector) would reside on the first floor of this sumptuous building, a confection of Renaissance and Baroque styles. His living quarters now host the Cultural History Museum, crammed with period furniture and costumes, sedan chairs, and paintings of Ragusan aristocrats.

Insider's tip: During the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (July and August), head to the courtyard for classical music recitals. It was also used as a location for Game of Thrones – if you're a fan, you'll recognise it as the atrium to the Spice King's palace in Qarth.

Trace Dubrovnik's sea-faring past

Dubrovnik's Maritime Museum – set in St John's Fortress, which guards the entrance to the old harbour – is a fascinating place to learn about the republic's impressive naval power, with exhibits spanning model ships, sailors' uniforms, navigational equipment, flags and maps. Come here to get your head around the vast merchant shipping wealth of what was once Ragusa – in the 16th century present-day Dubrovnik had one of the world's largest fleets, with over 180 ships and 4000 sailors.

Insider's tip:  The Aquarium on the ground floor of the fortress houses a mesmerising display of Adriatic underwater life, including loggerhead turtles, conger eels and octopuses. Confusingly, it's accessed through a separate entrance off a different street (Kneza Damjana Jude 12).

Check out the city's unique photo-journalism gallery

The thought-provoking modern gallery War Photo Limited is dedicated to photo-journalism from global war zones, and attempts to offer unbiased reporting with a human element. Dubrovnik's sturdy fortifications have been put to the test several times during the centuries, most recently during the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia – and indeed, on the second floor, there's a permanent exhibition devoted to photos from the war.

Insider's tip:  Each summer War Photo Limited hosts a new temporary exhibition. Past shows have included 'War in my Neighbourhood', where Patrick Baz looked at the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1999), and 'Why am I a Marine?' with Stephen Dupont examining the inner lives of US soldiers posted to the Desert of Death in Afghanistan. Summer 2024 will see Ben Bohane focusing his lens on West Papua.

Catch a boat to Lokrum islet

A lush escape of pines, cypresses, palms, eucalyptus, cacti and agave, and a rocky shore with decent spots for bathing. There's an abandoned 11th-century Benedictine Monastery near the south-west corner, and an adjoining villa built by Archduke Maximilian von Hapsburg – the complex lies in a botanical garden, with promenades, exotic planting and strutting peacocks, plus a pizzeria and an informal bar. Note that all visitors have to leave before sunset.

Insider's tip: It's worth knowing that throughout summer, regular taxi-boats depart from the old harbour for Lokrum (journey time 10 minutes). While on the islet, climb up to the highest point of the 19th-century Fort Royal for panoramic views over the Adriatic.

Outside the Old Town

Swim and sunbathe at banje beach.

The sandy stretch a 10-minute walk east of the Old Town affords magnificent views of the medieval walls across the water. You can hire sun beds or baldachins (four-posters with wafting chiffon drapes), try water-skiing and parasailing, or even request massage. Above the beach, there's a lounge-bar on a wooden deck, doing cocktails and snacks, plus a seafood restaurant  serving Creative Mediterranean cuisine in an upper-level dining room.

Insider's tip: The setting is wonderful, but unfortunately it does get very overcrowded in peak season, and has a reputation for being overpriced and pretentious. To enjoy it at its best, come in June or September when there are fewer tourists and lower prices.

Climb up to Fort Lovrijenac for views back to town

A 10-minute walk west of Pile Gate, this sturdy 13th-century fortress perches on a rocky outcrop, 37 metres above the sea, defended by canons and guarding the entrance to Pile Cove. To reach it, climb up 175 stone steps – Game of Thrones enthusiasts will probably recognise it as the Red Keep, and Pile Cove as Blackwater Bay.

Insider tip:  Fort Lovrijenac affords fantastic views over the bay, back to the City Walls, making this a popular spot for photos. During the Dubrovnik Summer Festival , it becomes a dramatic setting for after-dark performances of Shakespeare's Hamlet – tickets sell fast, so reserve well ahead.

Ride a cable car to the city's peak

An ultra-modern, low-effort amusement for medieval Dubrovnik – visitors can take in the best vistas without having to trek up steep hills or trudge up hundreds of steps. The cable car departs from a lower station just outside the Old Town, and has two light and airy carriages, each carrying up to 30 people, which make regular three-minute runs to the top of Mount Srđ. A must-do memorable experience for adults and children.

Insider's tip: From up here you get fantastic views down onto the Old Town, the Adriatic sea and the surrounding Dalmatian islands. Come here at sunset – it's an ideal spot for photos. There's also a (rather pricey) bar-restaurant, an amphitheatre (seating 120) and hiking trail.

Outside the Old Town - Gruž

Discover yugo-nostalgia at the red history museum.

This museum is a poignant memorial to life in Croatia when it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945-1991). The exhibition is divided in three sections: Socialism in Theory, Socialism in Practice and Socialism in Memory, and includes a red Yugo 45 car, and the reconstruction of a typical apartment, with period furnishing, ceramics, magazines and music.

Insider's tip: The Red History Museum lies in Gruž, opposite the ferry port, so you might combine it with a trip to one of the Elafiti islets (see below). Before leaving, check out the excellent souvenir shop, stocking funky T-shirts, posters, mugs and tote bags.

Sea Kayak around the Elafiti Islets

A great way to explore the Adriatic coast is by sea kayak. Local company Adriatic Kayak Tours offers a full-day 'Peddle & Paddle: Lopud & Šipan Islands' tour , which takes adventurers around the Elafiti islands of Lopud and Šipan, by kayak and bicycle, with free time to swim and have lunch. You'll meet the group at Dubrovnik's Gruž port, to catch the morning ferry to Lopud.

Insider's tip:  Šipan has two settlements, Suđurađ and Šipanska Luka, and you will cycle from one to the other. In Šipanska Luka, don't miss the tiny Priježba pebble beach, on a rocky peninsula at the opening to the bay.

Explore Cavtat and rural Konavle

The nearby coastal town of Cavtat (served by regular taxi-boat and local bus) was founded by the ancient Greeks. This huddle of old stone houses are built on a pine-scented peninsular sheltering a pebble beach to one side, and a natural harbour to the other. Its main attraction is the splendid Art Nouveaux Račić Mausoleum by sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

Insider's tip: If you have a car, drive southeast of Cavtat into the Konavle region, with its fertile pastures, vineyards, and sleepy rural villages. Several authentic agrotourism eateries, such as Kameni Mlin ), serve homely meals, and wineries offer wine tasting of local indigenous white Malvasija Dubrovačka – a firm favourite is Crvik .

Sample Croatian wine on the Pelješac peninsular

A comfortable day trip from Dubrovnik, mountainous Pelješac produces some of Croatia's best red wines, made from the indigenous Mali Plavac grape. Dingač, the region's most highly esteemed wine, comes from steep seaward-facing vineyards, close to the village of Potomje. On the way there, you'll pass through Ston , famed for its medieval fortifications and oysters .

Insider's tip:  Notable wineries you should visit are Miloš Winery near Ston,  Matuško in Potomje, and  Korta Katarina in Orebić. All three are open for tours and tasting, and you can purchase bottles to bring home.

Catch a catamaran to Mljet National Park

The island that time forgot. Mljet doesn't have any grand harbour towns or seaside resorts, but it does have pristine unspoilt nature. Here, two interconnected turquoise saltwater lakes are surrounded by dense pine forests. On the larger lake, there's a tiny islet, capped by a 12th-century Benedictine monastery. The entire area has been declared a national park.

Insider's tip: Within the park, you should hire bicycles and peddle round the perimeter of the larger lake (six miles/9 km), or hire kayaks and paddle across  it. If you decide to stay overnight, within the park there is just one hotel, Hotel Odisej Mljet .
