23 Cheap destinations in 2023 with great weather in November

Bargain hunters around the world know that November is arguably the best month for cheap travel to warm places, and 2023 looks to be another great year. Most of the popular tropical places have rainy seasons that end by early November, and yet their major tourist season doesn’t start until December. This means you can get amazing bargains at some of the most interesting destinations around the world.

We research hotel prices each year for each of the destinations on these lists, and the 2023 update contained some thrilling entries. You can get a really nice-looking 4-star beach hotel for under US$50 per night for two people (tax included) in many really nice places and islands in Asia. We start the list with Caribbean and other recommendations in the Americas, but the best bargains are near the bottom of the list in Asia.

The Caribbean

If you are mainly just looking to relax, you’ve found the perfect place, with warm weather and amazing off-season deals. The all-inclusive resorts tend to be much cheaper in the long run, although they do make it more difficult to experience the local culture and explore the whole island. If you don’t care about leaving the resort and you want the best all-inclusive value in the Caribbean, head straight to Punta Cana, which is mentioned just below.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is at the north end of the Riviera Maya, which also includes the island of Cozumel , so this is a huge area with over a thousand hotels to choose from. All that competition keeps prices down until the high season begins, so November is still a buyer’s market. There are even ruins nearby and other cultural opportunities, so it’s not all about sitting on the beach here. If you prefer a high-rise hotel overlooking a beach then stay in Cancun itself, but if you prefer to stay in a friendly town with many restaurant and shopping choices then head to Playa del Carmen , just a bit to the south, instead. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The same resort that charges US$300 per night in January will usually go for US$200 per night in November, especially earlier in the month. And this goes for all-inclusive resorts as well, which start at US$170 per night for two people in the low season in November of 2023. If your main goal is relaxation in a perfect climate, Punta Cana is probably the best value in the entire Western hemisphere. Montego Bay, Jamaica

More good news comes with the fact that there are two other great resort areas that are each about 90 minutes by shuttle from Montego Bay Airport, so you can almost as easily reach Ocho Rios or Negril , both of which have a different vibe that you might prefer. Bargain hunters will also find pretty amazing prices at the all-inclusive resorts, particularly those in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. If you prefer a quiet beach area lined with smaller hotels, restaurants, and bars, then head to Negril. It’s worth noting that Jamaica is one of those Caribbean destinations where there is a huge difference in price between 3-star hotels, which are often small and family-run, and 4-star places, which are usually large, on the beach, and often run by a big company. You pretty much get what you pay for as well, so keep your expectations low if you book a cheap 3-star place.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

One of the best things about Puerto Vallarta is that, unlike most of the Caribbean destinations, this is a real historic town rather than a purpose-built resort community. That means that there are small and authentic (and cheap) restaurants catering primarily to locals, so you get a much more authentic experience if you prefer one. The hotel zone close to the airport is modern and posh, but you are a short taxi ride away from the lovely center of town. Considering the low rainfall in November, this might be the best option for those in the eastern half of the US and Canada as well. It really is a lovely place that is totally different than Cancun and the villages in that area.

The hotel prices listed just below are low, and they are real, but you pretty much get what you pay for here. If you want to book a Marriott 4-star resort on the beach, you’ll be paying much closer to US$200 per night. Puerto Vallarta has plenty of small and really-nice boutique hotels so you can save money and still have a great stay if you choose carefully.

Cartagena, Colombia

Hotel prices remain low through all of November for the most part, so you’ll have a good shot at deals at 3-star and above beach resorts that are trying to fill rooms during the slow season. Even if you are paying near the high season rates the hotels and everything else are bargains here compared to almost anywhere else. Cartagena is one of the cheapest places to travel in November on a beach, and you’ll get less rain as the month goes on. The nearby beaches are not fluffy white sand, in case that makes a difference. They are darker and such a fine grain that it’s a bit of a different feeling.

Mexico City, Mexico

Cusco, Peru

Those wanting to hike to Machu Picchu will also find this to be an ideal month, since getting in a group will be easy even without much advance notice. The train to Machu Picchu is expensive year round, and reservations should be easier to get the day before this time of the year. Hotels are always cheap in Cusco so you can afford to get something nicer than you are used to this month.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Overall this is a perfect time of year to visit almost anywhere in Argentina. When December arrives things really start filling up and all the locals are on their own holidays, so November is the ideal mix of great weather that isn’t too steamy, and modest crowds and prices. With Argentina’s recent inflation and currency devaluation, it can be hard to know how expensive this trip will be, but for most people it will be cheaper than in recent years.

The situation in 2023 in Argentina is once again a bit confusing. If you bring crisp US dollars with you you’ll be able to exchange them at the “Blue rate” for about double the official exchange rate without much difficulty. That way everything is literally half price compared to the official prices, which are already pretty low. Needless to say, you’ll want to read up on it and take precautions, but it’s a legit way to travel and you’ll feel like kind of a sucker if you don’t take advantage of it.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Somehow Brazil is looking unusually cheap in November of 2023, so it could be an ideal year to go. You won’t get a beach hotel in Copacabana for the prices just below, but you can get a pretty decent place and a beach hotel is still going to be very reasonable.

From November through February there are literally no European cities that could qualify as having “great weather.” We list Tenerife below because it’s technically in Europe, although not really much of a cultural destination. Antalya, Turkey (which technically isn’t even in Europe), has the closest thing to a sunny climate with acceptable temperatures. So during the winter Europe is all about cultural tourism, and lower hotel prices make it especially appealing for those who like to stretch their travel budgets and avoid crowds at the same time.

This is a very good month to visit because the weather continues to be perfect here, while the largest crowds from northern Europe haven’t quite started arriving yet. So finding an affordable hotel or apartment rental should be easy, and the restaurants and bars are always reasonably priced. If you want to be among other English speakers you’ll want to focus on the southwest area of the island around Los Cristianos and Playa de la America.

November is ideal in much of Africa, though Morocco might be a bit too cool by this time. The list below is quite incomplete due to how few cities we cover in the region.

Cairo, Egypt

Interestingly, December though February do get a bit cool in Cairo, so it’s not a great winter break, but in November it’s still pleasantly warm and bone-dry so you can enjoy the outdoors for long periods of time. If you don’t mind staying in a locally-owned hotel you can save a lot of money and see some old-world charm at the same time. Reservations in advance aren’t necessary, but it’s best to book your first couple of days just to avoid all the confusion once you arrive. It’s important to note that Cairo (and Egypt in general) are places where you’ll want to check recent news reports before you book, as there have been a few incidents over the years. The situation in 2023 looks promising, but things can change pretty quickly in places like this.

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

Keep up with the news, although this looks like it could be a great-value and interesting destination for the foreseeable future.

Cape Town, South Africa

Middle East

November is getting cool and even a bit rainy in most of the Middle East. An exception is Dubai and Abu Dhabi , which both have perfect sunny weather. However, Abu Dhabi doesn’t make this list because it’s not really cheap enough for the cut.

Another reason to consider Dubai is that the busy airport has cheap non-stop flights coming in from almost every major airport in Europe and Asia. As a result it’s popular to book long weekend trips of 3 or 4 days to Dubai, where you can enjoy some sunshine and shopping before flying back home where it gets colder by the day. You might also consider stopping for a few days in Dubai and then moving onto somewhere else with cheap direct flights such as the Maldives .

November is a tricky month for Asia. Nearly all of notoriously cheap Southeast Asia is having its final month of heavy rains, while cities to the north are already quite cool. There are still a few really good ones left over though.

Boracay Island, Philippines

Best of all, the big crowds don’t start showing up until December, so you can find very nice hotels on or within a few steps of the beach at very appealing rates. The food and drinks are always quite affordable here, so if you can get a fairly cheap flight you can have an excellent island holiday for a very modest price.

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia

The traffic in Bali makes sightseeing notoriously challenging in June through August, but November is less crowded so it’s a good time to come and spend a day in Ubud or even take a tour of the towns along the northern shore. In fact, if you want to avoid the huge Kuta crowds altogether you should consider basing yourself in the Lovina area of the north shore. It’s as lovely and charming as the whole island was 20 years ago, but that may not last.

Bali has always been cheap, but it really was hit hard by zero tourists during the pandemic and it’s been slow to recover. Hotel prices in 2023 are absurdly cheap and you might think they are mistakes or scams if not for the fact that there are hundreds of places at those prices with good reviews. The hotel standards in Indonesia are a bit lower than in some other places, but generally the well-reviewed hotels are clean, comfortable, and the staff are fantastic.

If you book a resort hotel from home you’ll probably think Goa hotel prices are much higher than you were expecting, but if you book a family-run place once you arrive you’ll still find fantastic bargains. It’s probably wise to book a few nights online before you get to India, because it can be incredibly confusing at first. After that you might be able to find a similar place for half the price by just checking around the same area.

Even though November is one of the busy months in Pokhara, they’ve built so many new hotels in the past few years that finding a room – even at a decent price – should always be possible. The high-season rates are still very cheap by almost anyone else’s standards, and food and drinks are always very affordable, but if you look around a bit you’ll be able to do even better. You’ll notice there’s a big difference in the prices between the 3-star and 4-star places in Pokhara. This is because the small family-run places are typically 3-star and any place with 4 stars is going to have a pool or other higher-end amenities.

Bangkok, Thailand

Fortunately, Bangkok remains very cheap by almost anyone’s standards. If you want to splash down for a nice 3-star room then it’ll be way less than half the price of a similar room in Europe or the US, and if you are fine with something more basic then you can find a room for next to nothing, even in the fun Khaosan Road backpacker district. Street meals for around a dollar are always there too, so you’ll be able to afford a bit more for a room anyway.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

The rainy season is over so it’s an ideal time to base yourself in Chiang Mai for some outdoor activities in the area. There are temples like crazy in the city center between the old walls, but even more interesting ones in the area just around Chiang Mai. If you never been to Bangkok it’s definitely worth spending at least a few days there first, and the craziness will make Chiang Mai seem all the nicer once you arrive.

The high season hotel prices will start in December, and crowds are usually thin for most of the month so you should be able to get some nice bargains at some of the nicer places that allow online booking. Example- Checked out renting a compact at PV for ~ 5 weeks. Great rate, about $150 USD. Insurance 2286.60 USD! This was for Oct-Nov coming up, 2023. Taxis great, I know. And inter-city buses Luxliners . But sometimes your own wheels… Thanks, Michael

Unfortunately I don’t know much about this at all. That sounds really awful and I hope you find a satisfactory answer somewhere. This is the first time someone has asked about a rainy country, but I’ve lived in the desert myself so I can imagine how that must be all year round. All of southeast Asia is still rainy through November and the easiest country to visit with by far the best tourist infrastructure is Thailand. You should probably start in Bangkok and then visit either Chiang Mai or one of the islands such as Phuket, or both. The rain often comes in the form of a heavy rainfall for about 20 minutes in the afternoon, but in November you can also get days where it rains moderately for much of the day. November may seem like an inconvenient time to vacation due to Thanksgiving at the end of the month, but there are benefits to traveling at the end of the fall shoulder season. Crowds at popular destinations are a thing of the past, and hotel rates are often brilliantly low. U.S. News took into account these factors (and more) and considered a variety of destinations, from outdoorsy spots to big cities to small towns, both domestically and abroad, to compile the best places to visit in November. Argentine Patagonia

Travelers seeking a cheap European vacation should consider a November getaway to Portugal's capital city. Temperatures remain comfortably in the 50s and 60s throughout the month, and although you can expect an increase in precipitation, the lack of crowds and inexpensive hotel prices more than make up for the rain. You'll appreciate the extra elbow room while riding Tram 28, a must-see Lisbon symbol that takes tourists past top sights like St. George's Castle and many beautiful miradouros (scenic viewpoints). What's more, the popular yellow tram provides easy access to Alfama, Lisbon's picturesque historic district.

A trip to the Swiss Alps in November appeals to those who want to save some money and avoid the peak ski season crowds. Ski season doesn't officially start until December, but there are several cable cars and ski resorts, including Saas-Fee and Zermatt, that may open early if they see snowfall. If you arrive before the snow, don't fret: You can trade shredding powder for hiking or biking various resorts' trails. Meanwhile, non-skiers will want to head to Geneva in early November to experience the annual Geneva International Film Festival.

Reasons to visit Chiang Mai in November are multifold. Spring is in full swing in Argentine Patagonia in November. The month's comfortable daytime temperatures, which rest in the 60s, are perfect for exploring Argentine Patagonia's many natural wonders. Visit Punta Tombo and Peninsula Valdés in Atlantic Patagonia to look for marine wildlife like orcas, Magellanic penguins and sea lions. Or, head to the Argentine Lake District or Southern Patagonia to hike, ride horses and go whitewater rafting. Though the journey to Argentine Patagonia is long, its jaw-dropping scenery and affordable lodging make a November trip well worth the effort.

The second-largest city in Cambodia is ready for tourists come November. Chance of rain decreases as Siem Reap heads into its dry season, and average temperatures rest in the 80s and 90s during the day. Top attractions here include Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm temples, along with the Cambodian Landmine Museum and Angkor National Museum. Plus, November brings the city's annual Cambodian Water Festival, a multi-day event complete with boat races, live music and food.

If you can look past the increase in rainfall, Crete in November yields some pretty big wins. Not only do hotel prices fall and crowds thin out, but several events also take place throughout the month. Visit during St. Minas Parade on Nov. 11 or time your trip for the Tsikoudia Festival, a celebration of the art of raki making. Located along the U.S.-Mexico border, Big Bend National Park is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Spanning 800,000-plus acres and featuring more than 150 miles of hiking trails, this Texas national park receives upward of 500,000 visitors per year. Although you'll no doubt encounter other tourists during your vacation (November kicks off the park's peak fall season), the pleasant temperatures in the 60s and 70s are worth battling the crowds. Because of the park's popularity during this time, be sure to book your accommodations early.

Visiting Istanbul during the city's shoulder season provides several perks. Summer tourists have vacated, leaving behind crowd-free attractions and affordable room rates. Plus, average temperatures are still comfortable in the 50s and 60s, meaning travelers don't need to worry about packing their snow boots (although rain is likely). Spend your vacation exploring this Turkish city's gorgeous mosques (the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are must-visit landmarks), perusing the Topkapi Palace Museum or strolling through the Besiktas and Beyoglu districts for a taste of local culture.

Visit Curacao at the end of its offseason to score major deals on airfare and accommodations. Though you'll come across some rain during a November vacation, you won't have to worry about the threat of a hurricane thanks to the island nation's location outside of the Caribbean's hurricane belt. Luckily, showers mostly occur at night, leaving you plenty of time to soak up some sun on the island's white sand beaches . Head to Playa Lagun or Cas Abao Beach to swim and snorkel, or take a stroll down the Handelskade pier to admire the colorful buildings and gorgeous water.

Sitting about 70 miles southeast of Portland in the Mount Hood National Forest, Mount Hood is the highest point in Oregon. It is also one of the most-climbed mountains in the world, making it a popular getaway destination for adventure travelers. A perfect November itinerary will include activities like sledding, riding the Mount Hood Christmas Train and skiing (ski season can start as soon as early to mid-November on the mountain). In the evening, warm up by the fireplace at one of the destination's many cozy lodges and inns.

A November getaway to the Big Apple means cooler temperatures and plenty of entertaining events, including the New York Comedy Festival. Travelers can admire the stunning fall colors that paint Central Park, check the exhibits on display at the world-famous Metropolitan Museum of Art or go ice skating at one of the many rinks that open around the holidays. Keep in mind, during popular events like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the New York City Marathon, crowds descend on the city and hotel prices surge.

Shenandoah National Park's stunning fall foliage and comfortable weather (think: temperatures in the low 50s to low 60s) last through mid-November, making this a great time to take in the landscape while exploring the park. Hit up the Virginia park's miles of hiking trails, including popular (albeit challenging) Old Rag Mountain and Fort Windham Rocks, which is part of the Appalachian Trail. Our advice: Secure your PTO, and go, go, go. Our staff members have been traveling all around the world in order to find the best destinations and hotels for GH's annual Family Travel Awards , and they provided a handful of awesome fall-focused picks for this list. We added in some suggestions from travel experts, and, voila, here's a list of 15 budget-friendly vacation spots for November.

Some picks, like Seattle and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, are awesome destinations for all ages. Places like Gaylord National Harbor outside of Washington, D.C., will wow the kids in particular. Or ask the grandparents to babysit and take a couples trip . We included a few choices for grownups-only getaways.

It's a lot to take in, for sure, so set aside some time over the weekend to explore the possibilities. A break now may be exactly what you need to get through the holidays.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Temperatures are finally cooling down in Scottsdale, making November a fantastic time to visit this adventure-filled destination. Fall marks the return of sunset horseback rides at the 30,500-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve , a protected desert habitat that is serious cacti goals.

Besides riding, the preserve rocks for its mountain biking and guided hiking. The Bajada Nature Trail is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly while the Gateway Loop Trail, a 4.4-mile loop, offers a moderately challenging experience for families with tweens. And perhaps coolest of all, hot air balloon rides allow families to see the desert from a different vantage point.

When your crew is ready for some water fun, hop from the city center to Saguaro Lake or the Lower Salt River, for kayaking, rafting and stand-up paddleboarding. Stay at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch , which is just wrapping up a huge renovation.

Orlando, Florida

It's your last chance to sample all the incredible eats and drinks at Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival , running through November 18, 2023, at Walt Disney World.

"My favorite dish is the Spicy Githeri [an African meal with beans and quinoa] at the Refreshment Outpost ," says Len Testa, founder of TouringPlans.com . His other must-tries include Pickle Fries with Dill Ranch and Orange-Cardamom Wings. In between bites, head over to the much-anticipated Journey of Water , Inspired by Moana, which is scheduled to open at Epcot on October 16, 2023.

One of the last places for leaves to reach peak color, eastern Tennessee will be ablaze in yellow, orange and red in late October and early November. Who's ready for a road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for some leaf-peeping?

This time of year, "the Abrams Fall Hike in Cades Cove will be a stunner," says Jeremy Puglisi, co-author of Where Should We Camp Next? National Parks. "The Alum Cave hike would also be better during fall foliage." Puglisi notes that the new campground, Roamstead , is getting a lot of buzz. L ocated near Gatlinburg, Roamstead offers an array of lodging options, including cabins, yurts and RV sites — plus a heated saltwater pool!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also very close to Dollywood. The theme park's Dollywood HeartSong Lodge & Resort , which has Family Suites with bunk beds, will open this fall.

Seabrook, Washington

The number of families booking a vacation rental to celebrate Thanksgiving has been on the rise. After all, it's tempting to avoid the mess at your house! If you want to jump in on the trend, we found the perfect place: Seabrook, Washington .

This oceanfront coastal community about two and a half hours west of Seattle boasts more than 500 homes — many of them for rent. All of them are walkable to the beach, playground, shops, restaurants and — most important for any Thanksgiving gathering — the grocery store.

All built within the last 20 years (and many much newer), the rentals boast state-of-the-art kitchens and plenty of space for everyone to sleep. Some rentals can fit up to 20 people!

"The overall vibe is fantastic," says a Good Housekeeping staff member who recently visited. "Everyone knows Milwaukee for beer but every single cup of coffee I had there was fantastic. The food was really solid all around too." Visitors can dine at prominent spots like Sanford , a critically acclaimed restaurant that features a surprise tasting menu with seven courses.

Also check out ARIA , which is housed on the second floor of the cool and contemporary Saint-Kate: The Arts Hotel , for artisanal Midwest cuisine. Our staffer also stayed at the hotel, which has art exhibits on the first floor. She says, "There were crayons and rolls of butcher paper in our room for drawing, which I thought was a neat touch in an art-themed hotel."

Seattle, Washington

Fall is in the air at Pike Place Market , a tourist and local favorite with 500+ businesses on the Seattle Waterfront. Pumpkin pie lattes, pear crème brûlée Danish and handcrafted pottery for the Thanksgiving table are among the fall market finds while year-round faves include the famous fish toss and the OG Starbucks location. (Yes, this is where Pike Place Coffee got its name.) For a special dinner, the market also boasts Aerlume , a design-forward, waterfront restaurant with a seasonally focused menu.

As a guest, you'll receive priority access to the Nest, a rooftop bar that's extremely popular with locals for fab views and delish cocktails. The Thompson Hotel Seattle is also within walking distance of other iconic attractions, such as the Space Needle and Chihuly Gardens and Glass, plus it offers cookies at check-in.

Antigua and Barbuda

Discover what the West Indies has to offer with a visit to Antigua and Barbuda. Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, these sister islands are known for their reef-lined beaches, rainforests and first-rate resorts. Vacationers can swim with stingrays, dive, fish, kayak or kite surf.

A Good Housekeeping staffer and her sister recently stayed at Carlisle Bay Antigua and opted for the all-inclusive plan, which includes meals and most activities. "The staff was the real highlight," she says. "They were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating." She also noted that if you're bringing children, the resort has "a wonderful kids' program."

Reykjavík, Iceland

Although “ice” is literally in the name of this Nordic Island nation, it’s not as chilly as one might think. The average high in November is a surprising 40 degrees — that’s balmy if you’re comparing it to Midwest winters. So, remember to pack your bathing suits. In fact, swimming is one of the most popular things to do — even during the winter thanks to heated pools around the city .

Dubbed the Land of Fire and Ice, visitors can admire the beauty of frozen landscapes and of course, try to see the elusive, colorful Northern Lights. Due to its manageable size, it’s easy to chill out and explore on foot. And there’s much to see. With natural wonders like glaciers and ice-capped terrain at every turn, a trek to Iceland is a must.

New York City

The week before Thanksgiving is the sweet spot to visit NYC for the holidays: You can shop at the seasonal markets and marvel over the department store windows when it's still fairly mild (averages are in the upper 50s) and far less crowded than later in the season.

Your must-dos include tickets to see one of the first Christmas Spectacular performances of the season; the Radio City Rockettes kick off on November 17. And the Winter Village in Bryant Park will be in full swing; the shops open on October 27 and starting on November 9, you can even eat in one of the park's cozy igloos. The twinkling walk-through Lightscape at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden begins on November 17.

EXPLORE NEW YORK CITY

National Harbor, Maryland

November 19 marks the return of ICE! to Gaylord National Resort , located in National Harbor just outside of Washington, DC. This year's theme is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and kids will lose their minds over the 20,000-square-foot frozen version!

They'll also love going down the two-story ice slides and traversing ice tunnels and arches (don't worry about the cold — everyone gets a parka when they enter!) . Aside from ICE!, National Harbor entertains families with with a fun (and free!) holiday light show every half hour, starting at sunset, plus fireworks every Saturday at 5:30pm; both run from November 11 to December 30.

The destination is also packed with stores (including outlets) for holiday shopping, restaurants, and a giant wheel that the kids will want to take a spin on. One 6-year-old tester who recently visited told us, "This was the best day of my life!"

EXPLORE NATIONAL HARBOR

Charleston, South Carolina

November is a wonderful time to stroll around Charleston — and there are plenty of special events to enjoy.

The Preservation Society of Charleston holds its annual garden and home tours from October 11 to November 4. A citywide literacy festival takes place from November 3 to 12 at various spots around the city. And the famed Farmers' Market runs on Saturdays in November. Highly recommended indoor options include the South Carolina Aquarium and the new International African American Museum .

The historic HarbourView Inn , an indigo cotton warehouse turned boutique hotel, is a fantastic place to stay, especially for couples. They have the only private rooftop in town with 360-degree city views of Charleston’s famed steeple-lined skyline and historic harbor. It's where the hotel hosts a complimentary wine and cheese hour every afternoon, featuring local Southern favorites.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Skiing season kicks off in Jackson Hole in November. After a banner 2022-23 season that brought nearly 600 inches of snow, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort re-opens for its 58th season on November 25.

No matter when you're planning your trip, you should book early. A Good Housekeeping staff member recently stayed at The Virginian Lodge . "The hotel is actually an old motel that was recently renovated, so everything felt fresh and new," she says. "The decor felt very 'lodge meets mid-century modern.'"

For skiers, the hotel boasts a center for gear rental, a shuttle to the slopes and fire pits and hot tubs for your apres-ski enjoyment.

Today we’re looking at November, typically seen as a funny month for travel given the impending holiday silly season in December. But here’s a secret: while everyone else is busy counting down the days until the festive break, you could be off hiking in Patagonia, watching the northern lights in Iceland , or spotting wildlife in Uganda without the crowds. Sound too good to be true? Read on to discover where to go for your perfect November getaway.

If you’ve dreamt of standing on the shoulders of giants for a while now, November is the perfect time to finally tick that Nepal trek off your list. Post-monsoon days in the Annapurna and Everest regions are warm and sunny, while evenings are crisp and cold – so be sure to pack a good sleeping bag and down jacket! The rice-harvesting season is in full swing by November, so expect fields buzzing with activity, lush vegetation, clean air, and excellent views of the snow-capped peaks. Patagonia is one of nature’s last frontiers. 6. Australia

Cambodia ’s rainy season usually runs from June through October, so November is a great time to visit before the peak season gets into full swing. You might still experience the odd downpour, but incredible sites like Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom in Siem Reap should be fairly quiet.

November is also a fantastic time to immerse yourself in Cambodian culture at the Bon Om Touk water festival, which draws millions of Cambodians to the banks of Phnom Penh’s Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers to watch boat races, dance to traditional music, and eat delicious food. After the festivities, head to the pretty riverside city of Battambang to while away the days in quaint cafes, explore the hilltop Wat Banan temple, or take part in yoga and dance classes with the locals along the riverfront.

November is a shoulder season in Uganda due to the short rains in the south, but this might appeal to some travellers. Thanks to heavy rainfall in October, the dry plains and savannah reserves turn lush shades of green, and flocks of colourful migratory birds arrive – so have your camera ready! Large game can be a little trickier to spot with all the thick vegetation, but you’re in with a good chance of seeing gorgeous newborn animals as food is plentiful. Gorilla trekking can be more challenging (or adventurous, depending on how you look at it!) in the muddier, wetter conditions, but the treks are often shorter as the gorillas stay at lower altitudes where it’s warmer and easier to find food.

The holiday travel season is already here, and whether you’re going home or getting away from it all , these are some of the best points and miles deals for travel to take advantage of this fall. With access to these offers, you could wind up with some extra room in your budget for those holiday gifts .

Shift points between accounts to benefit you

Members of Leaders Club, the loyalty program for The Leading Hotels of the World, have a new way to earn points now that it has partnered with Citi ThankYou points. With more than 400 world-famous hotels like The Ritz Paris , Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome , and Acqualina Resort and Residences in Miami, adding points to your account could help save cash on your next trip. Points will transfer at a five-to-one ratio. This means you can exchange 1,000 Citi points for 200 Leaders Club points. (Redemptions start at around 4,000 points and are tied to the cash cost of a stay.)

You can check your balance and book your favorite hotels using Leaders Club’s newly launched mobile app. If you’re not yet a member, you can earn 500 bonus points by signing up and completing your profile ; the bonus arrives via email once you sign up. Another new feature: You can also transfer points to another account or gift points—just in time for the holidays .

Score these top November travel deals

Air France-KLM has quietly lowered the cost of its one-way business class awards between North America and Europe. If you’re lucky enough to find one of the saver flight deals on its website, you could be traveling in the pointy end of the plane for a cool 50,000 Flying Blue miles each way. That’s one of the best deals out there; some airlines can charge almost twice that amount.

Act quickly to take advantage of the remaining days of the Delta -Instacart partnership, which is ending on November 10. Until the time comes when they part ways, you can continue to earn one SkyMile for each dollar you spend with the food delivery service.

If you’re giving tickets to concerts, sporting events, or theater shows as a holiday present, there’s great news: A new partnership between American Airlines and Ticketmaster will reward you with one mile for each dollar you spend, as well as one American AAdvantage Loyalty Point that helps to qualify for elite status with the airline. Delta has its own version that offers one SkyMile per dollar spent through the entertainment ticket platform.

American has a new “instant status match” program designed to earn new business from Delta and United top elite travelers. Provide details of your existing elite status with either carrier, and American will match it for four months and continue to extend it if you meet certain travel thresholds.

Rack up bonus points galore

British Airways and the Avios program have a new promotion that could literally double your path to free travel . Between now and November 21 (for flight reservations through January 14, 2024), members can receive double Avios points on their next ten trips after registering. Keep in mind that you won’t earn double points on flights booked before you register for the promo.

If you prefer a private residence or villa for your vacation plans, Marriott Bonvoy is offering double elite qualifying nights for elite status and 10% off on reservations made between now and December 24 for completed stays by the end of the year. The stay must be for at least two nights to benefit from the bonus.

American Airlines and Qatar Airways have a promotion this fall where you can earn a significant bonus by adding your AAdvantage account number to American or Qatar Airways flights between the US and Doha. Travelers in business class can earn 15,000 bonus miles for each American or Qatar Airways flight between the U.S. and Doha between now and November 17 ( premium economy passengers on American flights only earn 5,000 miles in each direction). The promotion is targeted but is available for eligible members in the American Airlines mobile app or online. You can earn as many as 90,000 miles.

World of Hyatt is out with its fall promotion called Bonus Journeys, offering 3,000 bonus points for every three nights you stay (up to 21,000 points in total). If you have the World of Hyatt Credit Card , you will earn an additional 1,000 points at a subset of participating hotels. Be sure to register by November 10 and stay by the end of November to earn the bonus at popular properties like the Park Hyatt Sydney or the Hyatt Centric Gran Via Madrid .

The Preferred Rewards program from Bank of America is on the heels of adding nine new partners to its benefits list. The no-fee program has different elite tiers based on member balances across various accounts like savings, investments, and credit cards. At TPG, one of our key goals is to help you find the cheapest airfare . However, your ability to find valuable airline deals depends on a few factors.

Flights during the peak of summer and, of course, the holidays are often much more expensive. Still, there are ways to hedge your bets and get better deals than others. That said, some of the common tips people tout are flat-out false.

Have you ever heard that booking a flight on a certain day of the week will yield the cheapest results? Perhaps you're thinking of a cousin who claims he found a great deal when he checked on airfare prices at 12:01 a.m. on a Wednesday. Maybe your friend swears by setting a reminder on their phone for 1 p.m. on a Thursday when shopping for flights.

There's just no truth to that legend.

While there is no shortage of rumors (and "studies"), here's what airfare experts say about how timing influences airfare prices so you can maximize airfare savings.

Is there a day that's cheaper than others to book a flight?

It's a question we get asked all the time: "What is the cheapest day to book a flight?" There's a common misperception that certain days are better for finding flight deals. However, research shows that this is a myth.

There is no magic day to book, but there are some sweet booking windows when airlines lower prices, according to Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at the booking app Hopper .

Hopper relies on 10 years of data and 80 trillion flight prices to recommend the best time to book specific routes and dates.

"Typically, we tell travelers for domestic trips to start monitoring prices three to four months in advance of a trip," Schwimer said. "Expect to book one to two months in advance."

For international trips, the booking window is a bit larger. You should start monitoring six to seven months prior to the trip and book it three to five months in advance. That's the recommendation from both Hopper and TPG.

"When you're traveling internationally, planning ahead is key to getting the cheapest airfare," Hayley Berg, Hopper's lead economist, said in another interview. "Travelers often book international flights too far in advance or too last minute, overpaying significantly for their tickets."

Remember that the strategy changes pretty dramatically if you book with points and miles . Airlines often open award space for coveted business- and first-class seats either when the schedules open or at the last minute.

As for whether there's a particular day that's cheaper than the rest for booking, Schwimer mentioned that "there's no one day or golden rule when to book."

Berg echoed this sentiment.

"There's a common myth that 'booking on a Tuesday' will guarantee a traveler the best price," she said. "The reality is prices change so often and depend on the route, the travel dates, etc., that there isn't one day that guarantees you the best price."

What's the best day to travel?

Although airfare prices fluctuate based on when you book, midweek travel is generally cheaper than flying on weekends. That said, Sundays can also be a sweet spot.

"Flying midweek can save you nearly $100 off your ticket," Schwimer said. "So when you're thinking about when you want to travel, try shifting your dates midweek versus flying over the weekend. If you can be flexible and book either a Tuesday or Wednesday versus a Friday or Saturday, you're gonna save significantly off your trip."

Berg had similar thoughts.

"Travelers who fly midweek, usually Wednesday, can save an average of $56 per ticket on domestic airfare throughout the year," she said. "Midweek savings spike over $60 per ticket during busy spring break and summer vacation months, while flying midweek over the holidays can save you $100 or more."

Schwimer also had some good advice to price the first flight of the day. Often, you'll find those early departures can save you some big bucks. It's not easy to set the alarm for 4 a.m., but it's easier to wake up when you know you're saving money.

"We always recommend booking the first flight of the day, not only to avoid delays and cancellations but also in terms of price," she said.

Additionally, according to Bob Harrell — an airfare consultant at Harrell Associates who analyzes airline pricing — you might also find airfare prices fluctuate Monday through Friday. That's because airlines look at customer demand and monitor booking trends to decide whether to open or close certain types of fares and whether to raise or lower existing fares.

So, how can you use this information to your advantage when buying airline tickets?

Try using a price monitoring tool to get real-time updates to help you decide when to travel for the lowest fare. Tools like Google Flights and Hopper's "Watch This Trip" can help you track the price of your desired route before booking; they will indicate or directly notify you when prices are at the lowest for your trip.

When to book holiday travel

Best time to book flights for summer trips.

It's not too late to look for deals for summer travel.

Berg said that prices tend to drop on average one to two months before departure, but lately, we are seeing a lot of last-minute travel deals — even to Europe.

"Prices will change frequently," Berg said. "Don't wait too long to book, as prices can increase by almost double in the last three weeks ahead of takeoff."

If you are already looking ahead to next summer, Hopper recommends monitoring flight prices at least three to four months in advance and then booking one to two months before the intended travel date.

If you plan to head abroad next summer, the booking window is naturally further out, particularly for longer-haul transpacific flights.

"For trips to Asia and Oceania, we recommend booking five to seven months before takeoff," Berg said. "For Europe and other regions of the world, we recommend booking anywhere from three to six months before departure to get the best prices."

Best time to book flights for spring break

The best time to book your spring break trip is similar to the timeline for summer trips. You should begin monitoring prices for your desired destination three to four months in advance, depending on when your (and your family's) time off falls. Set Google Flights alerts now for upcoming trips you have in mind.

For example, if your spring break falls in March, the ideal time to book is before early February. Flexibility will also help here.

Remember that demand surges during the spring break period after the doldrums of winter. Many people wait too long to book those trips and end up paying more than they need to.

Hopper says airfare prices will fall between one and three months before departure and rise rapidly in the last three to four weeks before spring break.

Best time to book flights for Thanksgiving and Christmas

The cheapest holiday airfare deals are generally available in September and October.

"We tell people to start monitoring in August," Schwimer said, "but our typical book-by date is mid-October, so usually around the 14th of October." She added that "no later than Halloween is usually our book-by date for both Thanksgiving and Christmas."

Similarly, a Google Flights booking trends report suggested that average flight prices around Christmas were lowest 71 days before departure.

Prices will only rise as the holidays approach, so your best bet is to book sooner rather than later.

Best time to book flights for New Year's Eve

Like Christmas flights, Hopper says you should try to lock in bookings for New Year's by Halloween at the latest.

That is true for "really any of the major winter holidays," Berg said. "We recommend booking further in advance. I would book that New Year's Eve trip as well before Halloween."

What about hotels?

Hotels are a special category where you can often wait until much later to score good deals.

"We often see good deals last minute for hotels in big cities. Something to keep in mind ... especially for those holiday weekends," Schwimer told TPG. "And you know that [during] the Christmas holiday period, you can often find some really great last-minute deals in big cities if you wait.

"Obviously, that's not always ideal in terms of planning," Schwimer continued, "but we have seen some really great deals in that last-minute window in big metro cities."

Bottom line

While there is no magical time or day to book airfare for the best prices, your best bet is to fly midweek, specifically on Wednesdays, for both domestic and international travel. Flying over the weekend can come at a significant price premium, though Sundays have occasional deals.

Also, try booking domestic flights one to two months ahead of time.

For international flights, your best bet is to aim to book three to five months ahead of the trip.

If you are using airline miles , remember that it's never too soon to start checking and booking.

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.
