If you crave a beach vacation but are stuck in "Hotlanta," don't stress. Tybee Island is a great place to escape and relax with some surf and sand, and it's an easy 30 minutes' drive from historic downtown Savannah.

Asheville represents everything you could want in a weekend getaway. This fun and quirky North Carolina mountain town is home to world-class festivals, restaurants, and unique shops.

No trip to Asheville is complete without a stop at the Biltmore . This 250-room mansion is America's largest private home, and each year over a million visitors pass through the doors. While you are here, stop by the Bistro for a bite to eat.

Walk around downtown to take in the beautiful views and some quality street performances or browse the independent shops and galleries and try some of the best restaurants in the south. You will leave feeling rested and recharged from all that fresh mountain air.

There are many waterfalls worthy of a visit in North Georgia, but Toccoa Falls is one of the most spectacular. Surprisingly, at 186 feet, it's actually taller than Niagara Falls , and as a result draws many visitors each year. The town of Toccoa makes for a great weekend getaway, as it's less than an hour away from the city. There are many hiking trails in the area, as well as additional falls.

The award-winning downtown is home to unusual shops, art galleries, and historic buildings. Stop by the historic courthouse square to see the newly renovated courthouse building. Take a walk across the street to the Cornerstone Antique Market. Don't forget to stop by the Currahee Military Museum to learn about the first paratrooper camp in the US located in Toccoa.

If you want to explore more than the falls, head to Paul Anderson Memorial Park , a pretty spot that pays tribute to the world's strongest man. That’s a small sampling of the more than 100 different productions that have used the town square, local neighborhoods, and of course the iconic courthouse downtown as backdrops for the small, and big screen.

The World’s Fair Park is a must-see and you’ll need to take a ride to the top of the Sunsphere for a 360 degree look at the town from high above. The Smoky Mountains are truly a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the city. You’re surrounded by endless mountains, things just move slower, and my favorite part is, you can actually see the stars at night!

The Smokies are my favorite hiking destination in the Southeast and it’s why I go at least two times a year. They have hikes that range from easy to more challenging routes , but if you’d prefer to stay off the trails there are plenty of overlooks for you to pull over at and take pictures of the panoramic views.

If you’d prefer more adventurous avenues you can go whitewater rafting or zip-lining through the mountains. There’s so much to do there and it’s no wonder it is the most visited National Park in the US!

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Choosing the right hotel or resort is essential, especially if traveling with a group.

Depending on your intentions, you might want to look for places close to the attractions you intend to visit or one that caters to children more.

As a traveler and parent myself, I always take into consideration the comfort of my family first.

Barnsley Resort is a beautiful village-like resort with cottages and plenty of family-friendly activities on-site.

You can explore the historic ruins and gardens, play some golf, or even go horseback riding.

Now although the amenities are a blast to enjoy, they do cost extra.

If you’re looking for a little more pizazz, the Mansion on Forsyth Park might be for you.

It’s a snazzy place with luxurious rooms and a gorgeous lounge, but the food is as pricey as it is fancy.

A great alternative to this is the Chateau Elan Winery and Resort, which is a lot bigger and offers more activities to do. 

Plus most of their amenities are free of charge and the food is phenomenal.

But the top pick is definitely the Azalea Inn & Villas.

This charming bed and breakfast is a cozy escape from the modern world, with excellent service and the most lovely rooms in town.

Breakfast here is fantastic, and it’s within walking distance of several major attractions and restaurants in the city.

How I Picked The Destinations 

We often visit Atlanta because of relatives, and we try different hotels and resorts each time.

After doing this for a few years, I thought why not compare the best?

I’m also a parent and traveler so I have an eye for amenities, location, and prices so that I can fit it better for future itineraries.

Of course, I asked people around about their favorite spots, and I’m pleased to know it’s very similar to what I have in mind.

Our Property Rating Method 

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

• Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety. 
• Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness. 
• Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation. 
• Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability. 
• Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

The gang absolutely loved the charming, 1800s rooms, hot breakfast, and spectacular service.

It’s also within walking distance of many museums and restaurants, so we did plenty of exploring.

A lot of these are within a workable travel distance from DC, too, so we’re excited about trying some of them out! We usually stop in either Atlanta or Savannah when we’re driving back to DC from Scott’s folks’ place in Florida, and I would love to extend our path out to one of these awesome spots!

Known as the “up-and-coming” town in the South, Greenville has seen a lot of development in the past few years with new boutiques, cafes, and restaurants popping up every month. It’s a good spot to relax and take in the charming town. Greenville is especially family friendly, but that doesn't mean it doesn't also cater to couple travelers looking for a weekend getaway together. We visited Greenville as a couple (plus our dog, Kramer) and had a lot of fun. Great breweries, cafes, and more kept us entertained the whole weekend.

Another southern coastal town, Charleston is chock full of history and stunning architecture. Explore the many plantations and gardens or relax on the beach with some sweet tea in hand. Charleston is similar to Savannah, Georgia but also very different. While Savannah is smaller and a bit more loose, Charleston feels a bit more refined. From beautiful, luxury hotels and beautiful beaches, to history and delicious southern food, Charleston has so much to keep you entertained! We especially love Charleston as a couple's getaway given its overall romantic feel and beautiful neighborhoods, but families will also love sharing the city with children.

Two and a half hours southwest of Atlanta, Birmingham is a great choice for those interested in civil rights history and museums like the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The city’s culinary scene is also nothing to scoff at.  Birmingham is home to an incredible selection of restaurants, from small hole-in-the-wall spots to upscale fine dining establishments. Spend a day or two exploring the city on foot and take in some of the best views with a visit to Vulcan Park and Museum.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great way to experience the Appalachian Mountains and the stunning foliage that comes with fall. Take to the scenic drives and experience picturesque views around every corner. No matter what time of year you make the drive to Great Smoky Mountains National Park from Atlanta, you'll be greeted with lots of wonderful outdoor opportunities including camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and more. We highly recommend driving the Cades Cove Loop while you're there!

Athens, Georgia might be my absolute favorite small town in the country. I should admit I'm a bit biased since I did attend and graduate from the University of Georgia which is located in Athens, but it truly is a wonderful town. In fact, it's regularly ranked as one of the best college towns in America ! From world famous beers such as Terrapin and Creature Comforts, to lively football games at home stadium of the back to back national champion Georgia Bulldogs, to world class art museum, some of the best food in the south, Athens has it all. Oh, and did we mention the music scene in Athens? It's world famous, too. Bands including the B52s and R.E.M. originated here and even performed their first concerts here.

Athens is a quick hour and a half drive from Atlanta, so even if you can't afford a whole weekend getaway, it's close enough to slip away to for a day adventure, too.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is a unique experience from any of the other options on the list, and personally, it's one of my favorites listed here. Cumberland Island is maintained by the National Parks Service (NPS) which helps keep the island well preserved and taken care of. To get to the island you have to take a ferry from St. Marys, Georgia over to the island which takes about 45 minutes. The only accommodations on the island are camping at one of the official NPS campgrounds, or staying at the luxurious and all inclusive hotel, the Greyfield Inn . I've never had the opportunity to stay at the Greyfield Inn, but it's a dream, too!

No matter where you choose to stay on the island, your sure to have a memorable time enjoying the miles of quiet beaches, wild horses roaming free, and winding trails shaded by moss covered trees. Personally, the paninis are to die for, and very sharable for you and your partner.
