Getting to Know Universal – Free Attraction Tours

Curious about how your favorite Universal Orlando attractions work? Want to see the backstage areas not available to most guests? Need to know where all the easter eggs are located? The free attraction tours at Universal Orlando are a fun diversion for seasoned fans of the parks. In this article, we will cover what to expect from a tour, how to request one, and which attractions feature tours.

What Are Attraction Tours?

Universal Orlando offers several free, unpublicized tours of popular attractions. Tours last approximately 15-30 minutes and include behind-the-scenes information that explains the attraction’s stories and how the rides work. Many tours include visits to areas guests normally cannot access such as control booths, the Immigration Floor at MiB Alien Attack, or under the Revenge of the Mummy track.

Tours are available when staffing permits at the discretion of the Team Members. To request a tour ask the greeter Team Member located at the attraction entrance if tours are available. If the attraction tour is not available come back before park closing or the next morning.

TouringPlans Touring Tips

  • Tours are offered at the discretion of Team Members – tours are most often granted in the morning when attractions are fully staffed but guests have not arrived.
  • The free tours do not include riding the attraction. Universal’s VIP Tours take you behind the scenes and skip the lines.
  • Be cool man, Team Members are more likely to work with you to provide a tour if you work with them.

Theme Park Pro

Ultimate Guide: Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood

The Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood is in my opinion one of the best attractions at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.

The World-Famous Studio Tour is a one-hour tour around the backlot at Universal. This is a real working movie studio, as such you’ll see sets from your favourite shows and movies as well as some of Hollywood’s most legendary filming locations.

This tour is suitable for the whole family (I recently did it with my wife and our 14-month-old little boy) and features two cinematic ride experiences; Fast & The Furious: Supercharged & King Kong 3D.

What Is The Universal Studio Tour?

The World-Famous Studio Tour takes you behind the scenes of a real film studio which has been the home to a number of movie and television shows since its inception over 50 years ago.

The tour is hosted by comedian Jimmy Fallon alongside a live guide who provides commentary throughout the duration of the tour.

Highlights Of The Studio Tour

During the tour, you will travel through different past various sound stages, and through movie sets. Throughout this time you’ll experience a variety of attractions including;

Bates Motel

This is perhaps the scariest part of the tour.

Here you’ll pull up to the Bates Motel from the epic thriller film Psycho just as Norman Bates himself is carrying a body from a room to place in the back of his truck.

As he does so, he spots you, a witness.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

In an aim to cover his tracks, Norman will come towards you with a fake knife. Thankfully, the driver will begin to pull away just in time.

Norman gets closest to the back two carriages of the tram. As such I highly recommend sitting in the carriages closest to the front if you’re travelling with young children.

Plane Crash Wreckage

After escaping Norman Bates, you’ll enter the plane crash wreckage area of the tour. This features a commercial 747 aircraft which was purchased by the production company behind the hit 2005 film War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

The plane was chopped into pieces and transported to Universal where the full set has been left fully dressed as it was during filming.

Obviously, given how realistic this all is, it can be scary for younger guests.

Jupiter’s Claim

This new area of the backlot tour opened on July 22, 2022 (timed to open the same day as Jordan Peele’s movie Nope).

This is a drive-through area which has been rebuilt at Falls Lake (previously occupied by the Log Cabin) and features select theme park sets used in the sci-fi horror film.

Flash Flood Simulator

As you drive through the Mexcian Village, you’ll experience one of two flooding simulators that feature within the Universal Studios backlot tour.

This is one of the oldest parts of the backlot tour (in operation since 1968) and has appeared in countless films including Big Fat Liar and Fletch Lives.

In my opinion, this isn’t as scary as the other flash flood simulator which takes place as part of Earthquake: The Big One!

Earthquake: The Big One!

Earthquake: The Big One is the only split-level sound stage in the world, and has been in operation at Universal since 1969.

As the tram pulls into the subway area, an 8.4 Richter-level earthquake hits, causing a subway train to come off the tracks as it pulls into the station and flooding from the streets above to pour down into the underground.

Various scenes have been shot here including; Beverly Hills Cop III and Season 5, Episode 15 of the TV show Bones.

The Jaws portion of the Studio Tour dates back to 1967 and subsequently is one of the most nostalgic parts for long-time visitors.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

As the tram approaches the water, the tension builds as the tour guide narrates the scene. Suddenly the giant animatronic shark jumps out of the water, jaws wide open.

King Kong 360 3-D

King Kong 360 3-D is one of two simulator-based rides on the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour.

This simulator was created by Peter Jackson himself and is the world’s largest 3-D experience.

The film lasts just a couple of minutes and see’s you caught in the middle of a terrifying struggle between a 35-foot T-Rex and the 8th wonder of the world – King Kong.

Fast & The Furious Supercharged

This is another simulator-based ride situated on the back lot tour.

Once again you’ll put on your 3D glasses and experience a high-speed chase alongside Dom and the gang. This is far from my favourite part of the tour, but sadly it’s not optional. Thankfully, it only lasts a couple of minutes.

Where Is The Universal Studios Tour Located?

The World Famous Studio Tour is located in a dedicated lower lot area of Universal Studios Hollywood which can be accessed from Springfield, home of The Simpsons via a number of escalators.

This dedicated lower lot area is not to be confused with the lower lot escalators down to Jurassic World & Super Nintendo World.

If you’re unsure as to where to go for the Studio Tour be sure to ask one of the Universal Studios team members situated around the park, or the Universal Studios mobile app which features a map with GPS.

How Long Is The Universal Studio Tour?

The Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood lasts between 40 minutes and one hour. During the ride, there are no stops and no toilet breaks.

While the ride itself is between 40 minutes and an hour, the standby wait line for the ride can be another hour (give or take) depending on how busy the park is during your visit.

This ride is eligible for the Universal Express Pass so, if you are upgrading to the Universal Express Pass then you will be able to skip the line here. We did this during our most recent visit and we walked straight on (the standby line at the time was around 20 mins – February 2022).

How Much Does The Universal Studio Tour Cost?

The Universal Studios Tour is free.

However, to go on the tour you will need a Universal Studios Hollywood park ticket.

Universal Studios Hollywood tickets are sold using a dynamic pricing model based on estimated demand.

As such quieter days or times of year often have lower ticket prices, while more popular days and seasons (Christmas, Halloween, Spring Break, Summer etc.) have higher ticket prices.

This dynamic pricing model also applies to Universal Express Pass tickets and tickets for the VIP Experience.

Do You Have To Book The Universal Studio Tour?

Sadly, you can not book your tour of the Universal Studios backlot in advance. Instead, spaces on each tram are on a first-come, first-served basis. Each tram roughly holds between 100 and 150 people split across 6 or so carriages.

How Long Is The Wait For The Universal Studios Tour?

The wait time for the World Famous Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood can vary depending on factors such as the time of day, day of the week, and season.

During quieter times at the park, you can wait as little as 10 or 20 minutes to board the tram. However, during peak periods such as holidays or weekends, wait times can be in excess of one hour.

Can You Use A Universal Express Ticket For The Universal Studio Tour?

A Universal Express ticket at Universal Studios Hollywood can be used for the Studio Tour, as well as for many of the other popular attractions and rides in the park.

The Universal Express ticket gives guests priority access to select attractions, allowing them to bypass the regular standby line and experience the attraction with a shorter wait time.

Best Time To Go On The Universal Studios Tour?

Generally, speaking the best time to go on the tour is in the morning when the park first opens.

During this time the crowds are typically smaller and the lines are shorter, allowing visitors to enjoy the tour with minimal wait times.

On the flip side, the worst time to go on the tour is usually in the early afternoon, just after lunchtime as most people get to this area of the park at this time of day.

Is The Universal Studios Tour Scary?

Certain areas and attractions within the World-Famous Universal Studio Tour may be scary to younger children. However, none of them last long (maximum of four minutes).

If you’re looking for thrill rides then this tour isn’t it!

Is The Universal Studios Tour Suitable For Babies & Toddlers?

The Universal Studios Tour is suitable for babies and toddlers.

However, you will be on the tram ride for up to an hour so be sure to bring any supplies you may need for that duration of time with you.

It’s also worth noting that children must remain seated throughout the duration of the tour for health and safety reasons. So if you have a restless little one consider bringing a book, toy or iPad.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

There is an extensive stroller parking lot available in the Lower Lot area from where the tour departs, this is covered so if it does start raining while you’re out on the tour then your stroller should be protected.

Are There Any Height Or Weight Restrictions For The Studio Tour?

Unlike other rides at Universal Studios Hollywood there are no weight or height restrictions on the World-Famous Studio Tour.

Can You Take Photographs & Videos During The Studio Tour?

Visitors are permitted to take photographs and videos during The World Famous Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood.

However, flash photography is not permitted during the tours 3D cinema experiences (King Kong 360 & Fast and Furious: Supercharged).

Is The Studio Tour At Universal Studios Hollywood Worth It?

While going on the Studio Tour takes up a significant portion of your day at Universal Studios Hollywood park. I believe it’s a worthwhile time investment.

This tour provides a unique insight into how scenes from your favourite movies and TV shows are made while the expert tour guide provides some incredible Hollywood secrets.

Can You See Celebrities On The Universal Studios Hollywood Tour?

There is always the possibility of seeing celebrities on the World Famous Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, as the tour takes visitors through active movie and television sets where productions are often being filmed.

However, there is no guarantee.

I’ve been on this tour more than ten times over the past couple of years, and the only person I’ve seen is Mario Lopez who was filming at the entrance of the theme park.

Does Universal Studios Orlando Have A Backlot Tour?

Sadly, Universal Studios in Orlando does not have a backlot tour since it is a dedicated theme park, rather than a film studio.

The Universal Orlando Resort does, however, have a VIP Experience (which is also available at Universal Studios Hollywood).

The VIP Experience is a full-day tour of the Universal Studios park with a dedicated Universal guide. The ratio of guests to guide is roughly 8:1 so it’s a very personal experience in which you’ll skip the line on every ride in the park, go behind the scenes and learn park secrets.

Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates 60 years of taking fans behind the scenes

Universal Studios Hollywood is full of rollercoasters that fling you around at breakneck speeds, but this year the park is celebrating the anniversary of a slightly less adrenaline-inducing attraction.

The Hollywood Studios Tour Tram, which sees guests explore a working movie studio backlot, doesn't have corkscrews or require 3D glasses but remains one of Universal's most beloved elements. And the way it takes you behind the scenes makes it just as exciting for any movie buff.

The tour opened its doors way back in 1964, inviting fans to get a sneak peek into the magical world of movie-making.

Guests hop on one of the famous Glamor Trams, redesigned this year to feature their original iconic red and white candy stripes, and drive around live studio lots. They can glimpse a new show or film being produced, drive through recognisable locations from their favourite shows, or get the chance to walk around a preserved set if they're part of a VIP tour.

The whole experience, which is included as part of your Universal Studios Hollywood park ticket, is made even better by the tour's brilliant guides and drivers, who are positively brimming with a million pieces of trivia suited to every interest.

If that level of detail and insight sounds appealing, we'd definitely recommend looking into the VIP version of the tour, which is included in a Universal Studios Hollywood VIP package. One of the main benefits of this version of the tour is the ability to actually get off the bus and explore the sets and locations on foot.

Guests can take a wander down Desperate Housewives' Wisteria Lane, poke around the plaza at the center of The Good Place, and drive through the nearly-destroyed Jupiter's Claim from Nope. Even without the hop-off element though, seeing these amazing sets up close is undeniably special.

The tour also includes some moments designed to show off other aspects of the movie-making process. At one point a short drive through a town in Mexico is interrupted by a sudden flash flood, and guests can see how physical special effects can be employed at the drop of a hat before being immediately reset.

To celebrate 60 years of the attraction, Universal Studios has also added or brought back some fan-favourite elements from the tour's history such as the "Earthquake—The Big One" attraction which debuted on the Studio Tour in 1989. Visitors can also hop off during the tour for some memorable photo opportunities with a giant King Kong backdrop and the theme park’s original hanging Jaws shark.

There are also some slightly sillier aspects of the tour, such as a Fast and Furious-inspired "ride" which features some slightly ropey CGI (and ropier performances from la familia). It's a bit of a shame because a) it takes you away from the unique appeal of the attraction, and b) Universal Studios has nailed this sort of ride in different formats elsewhere (i.e. King Kong 360).

The tour also features some amazing recreations of classic movie scenes and sets. Without spoiling too much, a short drive through Amity Bay takes an alarming detour – and a quick visit to the Bates Motel will make you very appreciative of your own Hollywood accommodation.

A slightly less flashy element of the Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Studios Tour is a visit to an extensive prop warehouse. It might not sound like the most exciting place in a theme park, but it's cool for a very specific reason.

Full of chairs and tables and suits of armor and all the things that make up the fictional worlds of TV and movies, the warehouse is a reminder of the sheer amount of work that goes into making the things we watch and love.

On top of that, it reminds us that real people make movies. There's an entire community of people who work on every element of the entertainment we all enjoy and the Studio Tour brings that to life in a really exciting way.

That might seem like an obvious thing to say but it feels kind of important to point out in 2024, as we stare down the barrel of a somewhat dystopian potential future for the entertainment industry.

Despite the wins made by SAG-AFTRA after last year's strikes , conversations around artificial intelligence, and the ways it can "streamline" the production process, still abound.

It's concerning not just because AI is fundamentally anti-art, lacking the creative impulse required to make interesting and engaging entertainment, but because it takes the people out of an industry that was built on the backs of hundreds of professions and skills and trades.

At the end of the day, people make movies. They sweat over the smallest details and that's what makes art and entertainment special – and the Studio Tour gives you a glimpse of that. When you see, for instance, a hundred coffee tables all slightly different lined up, all meticulously logged and preserved and chosen for specific purposes, it's a little overwhelming.

The Studio Tour turns 60 on the same year that Hollywood sign turns 100. As the entertainment industry looks ahead to the future, encouraging moviegoers to think about how things used to be done and reminding them of how much love and craft goes into them can only be a good thing. Plus, it's a great time.

Unlock more magic: 16 Universal Orlando secrets to know before your next trip

Tarah Chieffi

As a child, I had three goals during our family theme park trips — ride as many roller coasters, hug as many characters and eat as much ice cream as humanly possible. In all my (sugar) rushing around, I was missing out on a lot of the details and secrets that make theme parks so special.

The park that offers more of those details than any other, in my humble opinion, is Universal Orlando Resort . Now that I'm a bit older (and slower), I relish the opportunity to explore the parks and uncover the Easter eggs, little-known experiences and magic moments hidden in plain sight.

I'm not the best at keeping secrets, so I am going to share my favorites with you so that you can enjoy them during your next visit.

Universal Studios Florida secrets

Take a free behind-the-scenes tours.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

Unlike the VIP tours , you won't find these tours on Universal's website or in any guidebook, but there are a few select attractions where you can get a behind-the-scenes tour from a Universal team member upon request.

On a recent visit, I asked for the "Immigration Tour" at the entrance to Men In Black Alien Attack. Unfortunately, nobody was available to give the tour during this visit — but the team member said it never hurts to ask and if you get a "no" at the entrance, try again at the unload area after you ride.

During the tour, a team member will escort you to an immigration room that looks straight out of the MIB films. You can take photos and get a close-up look at the aliens working the front desk. After your tour, the team member will typically escort you to the front of the line so you can get right on the ride.

I've heard of other Universal visitors having success getting a "backstage tour" on Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, Revenge of the Mummy, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Skull Island: Reign of Kong and Jurassic World: VelociCoaster.

While the tours may not be available during your visit, it's always worth asking — especially when the park isn't too busy.

Rock to secret tracks on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

universal studios behind the scenes tour

Coasters don't usually have much interactivity, but on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, you get to choose the soundtrack for your ride. After you are secured in the ride vehicle, you'll see a screen on the lap bar with a selection of songs you can listen to during your ride. But, there's actually a separate list of hidden tracks you can access if you know the secret.

Instead of choosing a music genre as instructed, hold your finger down on the Rip Ride Rockit logo for about 10 seconds and you'll be prompted to enter a 3-digit code that corresponds to a song. Theme park news site Touring Plans has a full list of songs and their corresponding codes so you can rock while you roll.

If you see a pay phone, pick it up

universal studios behind the scenes tour

This tip applies to all of Universal Orlando's parks, not just Universal Studios Florida. There are a handful of pay phones around the park that are silently begging for you to pick them up and see who is on the other end.

My son tried one out in the Simpsons area of Universal Studios Florida next to Cletus's Chicken Shack. He picked it up when it rang and, from what I can gather, a girl told him she lost her purse, but her phone number was on a piece of paper in the purse and if he found it and saw any cute boys, please give them her number.

There's also a message waiting for you at the phone outside of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man in Islands of Adventure.

The final one is in the red phone booth in the London area of Universal Studios Florida. If you dial 62442 (MAGIC) from the black rotary phone in the booth, you'll hear a "wizarding" message from the Ministry of Magic.

Discover real theme park props

universal studios behind the scenes tour

The "prop shop" sign outside this Williams of Hollywood store in the Hollywood section of the park is not just a clever name. Inside the shop, you'll find real props and memorabilia from Universal Orlando attractions, shows and special events.

During my last visit, I saw 3D glasses and shields from the defunct Shrek 4D attraction and facades from last year's limited-time holiday-themed tribute store . universal studios behind the scenes tour

Jaws opened in 1990 along with the rest of Universal Studios. The ride was surrounded by a replica of Amity Island that looked much like the backdrop for Steven Spielberg's 1975 thriller.

The entire Amity Island area, including the Jaws ride, closed in 2012 to make way for the Diagon Alley section of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter . Though the Jaws ride is long gone, references to the famed shark surround the area near The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The record store facade outside the entrance to Diagon Alley has a copy of "Here's to Swimming with Bow Legged Women" by The Quint Trio displayed in the front window, a nod to shark hunter Quint's toast with Chief Brody in the film.

In The Wizarding World of Harry Potter's Knockturn Alley, if you use your interactive wand to cast a spell on the collection of shrunken heads, they will occasionally sing "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a song that was featured in the "Jaws" film.

Islands of Adventure secrets

universal studios behind the scenes tour

Beware of the fountain that 'spits' knowledge

At Islands of Adventure, the Lost Continent is based on ancient myths from around the globe. Within Sinbad's Bazaar section of the land there's an innocent-looking mystic fountain carved from stone. If you approach the fountain, though, you'll find it's not quite as innocent as it looks.

According to legend, a mischievous water spirit inhabits the fountain and enjoys engaging in playful banter with guests. Walk up and say hi next time you visit, but I must warn you that you may get wet. It's called a mischievous water spirit for a reason.

Spot Stan Lee on The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride

universal studios behind the scenes tour

Stan Lee, the Marvel comics founder and creator of dozens of comic book characters, cameoed in many Marvel films before his death in 2018 at the age of 95.

Today, he lives on through his characters and his cameos, including multiple appearances in The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man attraction in Marvel Super Hero Island. He can be seen four times during the ride.

You can first spot him driving a truck that almost crashes into your vehicle and he makes a few more cameos in the ride's final scene after you (spoiler alert) save the day.

Learn the backstory to The Incredible Hulk Coaster's broken track

universal studios behind the scenes tour

The original version of Universal's The Incredible Hulk Coaster opened in 1999. It closed in 2015 for a major refurbishment and reopened in 2016 with a new storyline, paint job, trains and track sections. But not all of the old elements of the coaster were scrapped.

To enter the current ride, you pass under a large statue of The Incredible Hulk holding a roller coaster train car. He appears to be ripping it from a section of broken coaster track. That track is real track that was recycled from the previous iteration of the ride.

Skip the line with a certificate for meeting thrill ride height requirements

universal studios behind the scenes tour

This next secret starts off sad, but I promise it has a happy ending. During a 2021 visit to Universal, my son was just a hair too short to ride The Incredible Hulk Coaster. He was devastated, but they gave him a certificate that would allow him to head directly to the front of the line once he reached the required minimum height of 54 inches.

We saved the certificate and on our recent visit, he proudly displayed it to the ride attendant who confirmed he was tall enough and escorted us through the ride exit so we could get on the ride with no wait. They even congratulated him for his accomplishment.

Other thrill rides at Universal offer similar certificates, so if your child doesn't quite measure up, you can ask an attendant if one is available.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade secrets

Find a drain-dwelling visitor from the movies in the bathroom.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

If you are familiar with the Harry Potter movies, Moaning Myrtle is a former student who was killed in the 1940s during her time at Hogwarts. Her spirit went on to haunt the second-floor girls' bathroom at the school.

If you happen to find yourself in the women's restrooms in Hogsmeade (they're located across from the Three Broomsticks restaurant), don't be surprised if you hear a familiar bathroom-haunting voice.

Send a postcard with a Hogsmeade postmark

universal studios behind the scenes tour

If you felt bad leaving your muggle friends behind when you matriculated to Hogwarts, you can send them a postcard with an official Hogsmeade postmark.

All you have to do is visit the Owl Post, purchase your postcards and stamps, pen a few kind words and add the send-to address and a team member will stamp it with a Hogsmeade postmark.

When your postcard is ready to go, drop it in the box at the outdoor Owl Post station and an owl will ensure it arrives safely at its destination.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley secrets

Follow the winding paths of knockturn alley ... and learn dark magic secrets.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I didn't immediately know Knockturn Alley existed in the theme park version of Harry Potter. It was my second or third visit to Diagon Alley before I peered down the dark, foreboding walkway to discover an expansive (but still dark and foreboding) replica of Knockturn Alley.

Once inside, you can perform wand spells, peruse Dark Arts artifacts in Borgin and Burkes and indulge your Slytherin side.

Observe the Leaky Cauldron that actually leaks

universal studios behind the scenes tour

The Leaky Cauldron is a pub and inn that made multiple appearances in the Harry Potter books and films. It was a popular spot for witches and wizards, including Harry himself.

Inside, the Universal Orlando location serves traditional British fare, but if you look above the entrance before stepping inside, you'll see a wrought-iron sign with a witch stirring a cauldron.

There is a small crack in the cauldron and, if you watch for a few seconds, you'll see that water is actually leaking from the cracked cauldron. I love a restaurant that lives up to its name.

Uncover secret wand spell spots that aren't on the map

universal studios behind the scenes tour

When you purchase an interactive wand at Universal (you can get them inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, in some Universal hotels and in most Universal gift shops), there is a small, intricately drawn map inside the wand's box. You can use the map to help you find the interactive wand spots in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, but there are a few secret spells not noted on the map.

The easiest way to uncover the secret wand spots is to ask a team member (aka friendly Wizarding World witch or wizard) — but a few spots to try are the parchment in the Scribbulus window and the pot inside the window at Slug and Jiggers.

You can find a few more by viewing your map under the black lights in Knockturn Alley. It may be too dark to see them without the help of your magical map.

Pass through the wall at platform 9 3/4 just like Harry Potter

universal studios behind the scenes tour

I don't recommend testing your wizard skills by attempting to run through any brick wall you come across, but if you try it in the queue for the Hogwarts Express train that travels from the London area of Universal Studios Florida to Hogsmeade, you might find you are a real wizard after all.

When you reach the spot in the queue with a luggage rack between the signage for platforms 9 and 10, you can watch travelers pass through the wall to platform 9 3/4. You don't actually pass through the wall, of course — a well-placed piece of glass in the luggage rack reflects a fake brick wall that makes it appear as if you are doing so. This "Pepper's ghost" effect is a simple trick that's been used for more than 100 years.

Listen to compliments (or a critique) from a talking mirror

universal studios behind the scenes tour

When you are admiring yourself in the mirror with the robe you've just tried on at Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, don't be surprised if the mirror talks back to you.

Like so many things in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, this mirror is magical ... and she isn't afraid to speak her mind. I've been lucky enough to have her compliment my taste in robes, but she won't hold back if she thinks you might look better in a different style.

Bottom line

You don't have to do and see every single one of these secrets on your next visit, but peppering a few of them into your trips will make your visits that much more memorable — especially when you come away as the in-the-know hero of your vacation.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s world-famous Behind-the-Scenes Studio Tour attraction celebrates a milestone 60 years

By News Release | January 24, 2024

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — In 1964, Universal Studios Hollywood, originally referred to as Universal City Studios, rolled out its fleet of Glamor Trams, inviting tourists to “see film rushes of current productions, both feature and television, being made at Universal City,” according to the attraction’s original press release issued on July 4, 1964.

universal studios behind the scenes tour

It was a novel concept to invite the public to be a fly on the wall of movie and television production. After all, no one else had ever conceived of the idea. The iconic red and white Glamor Trams, with their ruffled awnings, were staged five times a day, each lasting just over two hours, Monday through Friday.

2024 celebrates the Studio Tour’s milestone 60 years, the more than 200 million guests who have experienced this attraction and, ultimately, Universal Studios Hollywood’s storied history. More information will be shared soon highlighting the exciting program planned for spring and summer in support of the Studio Tour’s 60 th anniversary.

During its inaugural year, behind-the-scenes special effects featured a brief make-up demonstration, a display of costumes by renowned costume designer Edith Head, an energetic two-man stunt performance and a tour of picturesque outdoor film sets. The following year, Universal expanded its scope of entertainment to feature a series of live entertainment that included a stunt show, animal show and screen test comedy theatre—all a precursor to what would eventually lead to the development of the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.

The point of entry for visiting guests at that time was at The Tourist Center, located at the Universal Commissary Building, where make-up artist demonstrations, trick photography and special props were on display.

That was 60 years ago, and while much has transpired in six decades, the Studio Tour has remained true to its roots of immersing guests in the awe-inspiring world of movie-making magic and providing remarkable access to production sets on a real studio lot. The once celebrated Glamor Trams are long gone and have been replaced with a contemporary 60-minute experience, infused with advanced technology that enlightens and entertains millions of film buffs, theme park fans and tourists alike visiting from across the globe. With its sights on the future, the Studio Tour is in the midst of converting its fleet of 21 diesel-hydraulic engines to electric trams to help reduce carbon emissions and improve the guest experience by reducing noise associated with the diesel-hydraulic engine.

And yet, aspects of the Glamor Tram have remained constant over this astonishing six decade span.

Studio Tour Guides were central to the operations of the Glamor Tram tours then and remain vital to the success of the Studio Tour today. Numerous times a day, professionally trained Studio Tour Guides interact with guests, educating them on the inner workings of the movie and television lot, armed with insider information and first-hand accounts, and entertain them with tours in both English and Spanish.

The role of a Studio Tour Guide has become a highly sought-after position in recent years with candidates auditioning from around the globe for a coveted spot – and for good reason. Studio Tour Guides have evolved over time into a Hollywood “apprenticeship.” Future filmmakers, budding actors and executives in-the-making are empowered to take advantage of a variety of opportunities and Hollywood-insider perks, that may include intimate group symposiums with prestigious industry professionals, free acting classes, participation in an actor’s showcase with top industry casting directors and chances for job placement positions within the company.

Dozens of producers, directors, performers, movie and TV professionals as well as industry executives began their careers as Studio Tour Guides, and to this day, rank among the leaders shepherding the Studio Tour and Universal Studios Hollywood into the future.

The Studio Tour of today continues to build on its rich history and like many great blockbuster films, creates a foundation for the next big sequel…and therein lies the origins of Universal Studios Hollywood.

From ushering guests past iconic sets from the renowned film  Psycho  directed by Alfred Hitchcock – one of the very first film sets accessible for visitors to see up close and personal in 1964 – to the evolution of Universal Studios Hollywood, immersing guests in innovative, groundbreaking rides and attractions themed to compelling film and television properties, Studio Tour was “act one” in the development of the notable Universal Destinations & Experiences (UDX) portfolio of global theme parks.

As the landmark Studio Tour turns a milestone 60, the juxtaposition of then and now shines a spotlight on its evolution to the theme park of today.

Beginning with the modern day, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD — touted as a revolutionary addition to Universal Studios Hollywood when it expanded its scope of movie and television themed attractions to include the popular Super Mario video game property — celebrates its one-year anniversary.

This collaboration with Nintendo was a placemaking endeavor for the global entertainment destination when it debuted the first SUPER NINTENDO WORLD in the United States. From the moment guests pass through the signature giant green pipe, they are transported into the Mushroom Kingdom to become a part of its exhilarating universe.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is a visually spectacular land, filled with vibrancy of colors and architectural ingenuity and where guests can gather to experience the groundbreaking “Mario Kart™: Bowser’s Challenge.” This technologically advanced ride, inspired by the popular Mario Kart™ video game series, seamlessly fuses cutting-edge augmented reality with projection mapping technology and actual set pieces along a moving ride track. With its broad cross generational appeal, SUPER NINTENO WORLD envelops guests in its unique world complete with interactive activities, Toadstool Cafe™ signature restaurant, 1-UP Factory™ store and walk-about characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad.

In partnership with Universal Creative, the visionary design and development division of Universal Destinations & Experiences, Universal Studios Hollywood has crafted an ambitious blueprint for its future. The historic journey is nothing short of remarkable and the evolution of breakthrough, next-generation thrill rides has continued to revolutionize Universal Studios Hollywood, renowned for its innovative collaborations with influential Hollywood filmmakers and creatives, including Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Michael Bay, Chris Meledandri, Jordan Peele and Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo’s creative team, whose credibility reinforce Universal Studios Hollywood’s authenticity.

Over the past 60 years, many rides have opened, and others were bid a fond farewell. For a walk down memory lane, here’s look back at some of the many milestone rides and attractions that have helped to shape the destination:

Bygone, nostalgic Studio Tour attractions included the Parting of the Red Sea (1973), which demonstrated an early special effect technique, and the spinning Ice Tunnel (1975) which demonstrated the effects of a severe snowstorm and forced perspective, as well as a dynamic hillside rockslide of tumbling faux boulders and a near miss collision with the infamous Runaway Train.

In 1971, Flash Flood showered guests with a unique behind-the-scenes look at movie weather effects. All these years later, the popular attraction continues to be a staple on the Studio Tour.

“Jaws Lake” took a bite out of the studio backlot in 1976, a year after Academy Award® winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s movie debuted, which has withstood the test of time as one of today’s premier Studio Tour attractions.

In 1989, “Earthquake” had guests clinging for their lives with its fabricated but eerily realistic 8.3 magnitude quake. All these years later, Earthquake, which continues to shake things up on the Studio Tour, will debut anew with updated and contemporary technology and aesthetics.

The progressive additions to the Studio Tour took a future forward leap in 1991 towards what was to come at Universal Studios Hollywood. It was a gradual process that began with the debut of the “Animal Actors’ Stage” in 1970, an attraction that remained until recently when the space was reimagined for the theme park’s upcoming Fast & Furious  themed roller coaster.

In 1991, “The E.T Adventure” paved the way for the arrival of such iconic rides as “Back to the Future—The Ride” in 1993 and “Jurassic Park—The Ride” in 1996, which was singularly revered as a game changer for the fledgling theme park.

In 2005, an original movie set from Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster,  War of the Worlds  landed onto the backlot as a sprawling addition to the Studio Tour, in which trams traverse a key scene depicting a small town devastated by an elaborately choreographed 747 jetliner crash and surrounded by wreckage and debris.

When the 1986 King Kong attraction was destroyed in the 2008 backlot fire, the behemoth primate reemerged in 2010 as “King Kong 360-3D,” a signature attraction on the Studio Tour, inspired by filmmaker Peter Jackson’s Oscar®-winning film.

“TRANSFORMERS: The Ride—3D,” under license by leading toy and game company Hasbro, set the stage for the theme park’s epic transformation that began in 2012, raising the bar for immersive, technologically advanced entertainment. Inspired by the franchise’s signature theme of action and adventure, the attraction infused an adrenalized multi-level ride-track and visceral special effects with one of the most elaborate flight simulation ride systems ever created.

In 2014, “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land” brought Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Academy Award® and Golden Globe Award-nominated film franchise to life with the same sweet and subversive humor and beloved characters that catapulted the franchise to international blockbuster fame.

2015 saw the introduction of two major theme park additions. This included “Springfield, U.S.A,” a vibrant land surrounding “The Simpsons Ride™,” which opened in 2008, to create an immersive portal into the exciting and colorful world made famous with “The Simpsons” incredible 35 seasons, and “Fast & Furious—Supercharged,” a gripping, high speed, 3D-HD thrill ride inspired by Universal Pictures’ most successful film franchise of all time and featuring the films’ cast members.

“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™” was transformative for Universal Studios Hollywood when the elaborately themed land opened in 2016, inspired by J.K.  Rowling’s   compelling stories and characters that were brought to life in the Warner Bros. Pictures films, and is a masterful recreation, faithful to the visual landscape of the fiction and films, including as its iconic focal point, Hogwarts™ Castle. Cobblestones pave the way along Hogsmeade™ Village welcoming guests to the land’s signature thrill ride “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” and  “ Flight of the Hippogriff™” outdoor coaster.

In 2019, “Jurassic World—The Ride” replaced “Jurassic Park—The Ride,” bringing to life Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s JURASSIC WORLD blockbuster films with the addition of technologically advanced mechanical and special effects dinosaurs from the movie, including the colossal Indominus rex and the magnificent aquatic Mosasaurus.

In 2021, Illumination’s global blockbuster film franchise,  The Secret Life of Pets , came to life in the groundbreaking ride, “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash.” The state-of-the-art ride combined sophisticated facial recognition with enhanced gesture tracking, helping to identify each guest as a unique stray puppy on the ultimate quest to find their forever homes.

The original Jupiter’s Claim set from Jordan Peele’s expansive horror epic,  NOPE , became the latest addition to the Studio Tour in 2022. The elaborate set was carefully disassembled post-production and transported to Universal Studios Hollywood where it was meticulously reconstructed on site, complete with original props and details from the film for Studio Tour fans to enjoy.

These just touch on the spectrum of adventure at Universal Studios Hollywood as the entertainment options are inclusive of daily theme park operations and acclaimed seasonal and special events.  From its engaging character interactions, popular Halloween Horror Nights and Grinchmas™ celebrations to the VIP Experience, a premium off-shoot of the iconic Studio Tour with enhanced behind-the-scenes access, there is so much to see and do at Universal Studios Hollywood…with much more on the way.

Beginning with the modern day, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD ™— touted as a revolutionary addition to Universal Studios Hollywood when it expanded its scope of movie and television themed attractions to include the popular Super Mario™ video game property—celebrates its one-year anniversary.

A QUIET PLACE

universal studios behind the scenes tour

Want to live another day in this post-apocalyptic world? You’re going to have to keep your mouth shut. In “A Quiet Place,” any sound you emit — screams, gasps, even a creak in floorboard — can be your demise.

While the prequel film, “A Quiet Place: Day One” hits theaters on June 28, 2024, this house lives in the world of “A Quiet Place” (2018) and “A Quiet Place Part II” (2020). In this universe, Earth has been overtaken by horrifying, sightless creatures who find their prey with their exceptional hearing. The only way to survive is by staying completely silent. In this HHN house, you, like the Abbott family (those films’ protagonists), will creep from the farmhouse to the woods to the foundry in complete quiet. That is, you’d better move in complete quiet. One slip-up and you’ll summon the terrifying creatures, who will silence you for good.

One of the most exciting aspects of this house is its incorporation of American Sign Language (ASL). The use of ASL is a key plot point in both “A Quiet Place” films, so its presence at HHN enhances the authenticity of the house. This is the first time we’ll experience ASL in an HHN house — and we can’t wait.

That’s all we can tell you for right now, but come back soon to catch up on all the latest.

Please note that the above photographs are from previous HHN events and do not reflect the upcoming event offerings.
