9 best South Pacific and Tahiti cruises for a once-in-a-lifetime trip

Megan duBois

Cruising around the islands of the South Pacific is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers. While some of the island nations, like Fiji, are well known to Americans, others, like Niue, are less familiar. A South Pacific cruise promises cultural experiences, beautiful landscapes and plenty of water-based activities.

You can find South Pacific itineraries on luxury, expedition and even big-ship cruise lines. Some ships sail from Hawaii to Australia with island visits throughout the South Pacific, or offer weeklong cruises from Australia to a handful of the nearest South Pacific islands like Vanuatu. Cruisers looking to dive deep into the rich history and culture of the South Pacific might want to consider some of the smaller luxury lines that depart from the islands themselves; Papeete, Tahiti, in French Polynesia is a common port of embarkation.

South Pacific cruises are often the domain of retirees and honeymooners, but South Pacific cruises can be a fulfilling trip with kids or as a multigenerational vacation.

Here are the nine best South Pacific cruises for your next vacation.

Silversea Cruises' 11- to 13-night Tahiti cruises

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Silversea Cruises offers a variety of South Pacific cruises that span nine to 19 nights, but the most popular options are the 11- to 13-night round-trip sailings from Papeete, Tahiti. In 2025, Silver Shadow will call on ports like Nuku Hiva and Atuona in the Marquesas Islands, Bora Bora and Moorea. Cruisers can enjoy hikes and marvel at waterfalls at Nuku Hiva, while Moorea is known for its ocean activities like snorkeling or sunbathing at picturesque beaches.

The cruise line offers two types of inclusive fares. The port-to-port fares include all food and drinks onboard, butler service, gratuities and shore excursions. This package does not include flights or airport transfers. The door-to-door fare package includes roundtrip flights, airport transfers, a precruise hotel, all food and drinks onboard, shore excursions, butler service and gratuities. Additionally, postcruise hotel and airport transfers are included.

Who should go: Silversea is known for luxury ships that cater to retirees. Silver Shadow features gourmet dining at several specialty restaurants, including the French La Dame and Italian La Terrazza. By day, gaze at the ocean from a light-filled lounge while enjoying a complimentary cocktail; by night, find your luck at the ship's small casino.

Intuitive service is a Silversea hallmark. The ship has a nearly one-to-one ratio of crew to guests, and a butler attends every suite.

Windstar Cruises' 14-night Tahitian Treasures and Magnificent Marquesas cruise

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Windstar Cruises is an industry leader in cruises around Tahiti. The brand has been sailing the islands for more than 35 years and now offers year-round sailings on Star Breeze. (The line will soon have two ships based in the region.)

While its staple itinerary is the seven-night Dreams of Tahiti sailing, the all-suite 312-passenger ship is starting a new 14-night route this year that takes cruisers to multiple islands in the Marquesas, Bora Bora (two-day stop), Moorea, Motu Mahaea (a private island off Tahaa), Rangiroa and Fakarava, with multiple days at sea sprinkled in. The 14-night sailing is limited, with just two departures in 2024 and three in 2025.

With an overnight in Bora Bora, you can try everything from an exhilarating tank dive or scuba excursion to a relaxing lagoon tour. Those looking for a bit of romance can book a night at one of the island's many over-water bungalow resorts.

Who should go: This itinerary would be ideal for adventurous couples looking to celebrate a major life event like a birthday or anniversary. Star Breeze recently underwent a massive renovation to add two new restaurants featuring Spanish cuisine and barbecue, an upgraded spa with steam and sauna rooms, an infinity pool and a larger fitness area. Each suite has all-new bathrooms, and the ship's smallest suites are quite large by cruise standards at 277 square feet.

Fares: From $6,899 per person based on double occupancy

Azamara's 15-night South Pacific Jewels cruise

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Azamara's 15-night South Pacific Jewels cruise is taking place only once in 2025, with embarkation on Jan. 24. On this sailing, Azamara Onward will take guests to islands across French Polynesia, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, with a final destination of New Zealand.

In Apia, Samoa, you can venture into the vibrant jungle to find hidden swimming holes, while Tonga will lure you into the ocean with incredible snorkeling around coral reefs. In Bay of Islands, New Zealand, join an excursion that takes you right into the heart of a cave system to see glowworms.

Who should go: Travelers looking for adventure off the ship, extended port times and a relaxed onboard ambience will love this cruise. While small, the 684-passenger ship features seven restaurants and cafes, a pool and a spa. All gratuities, both nonalcoholic and specific alcoholic beverages and self-service laundry are included in Azamara 's base fares. A hallmark of the line is complimentary cultural evening events that take place once a cruise, either on the ship or in port.

Fares: From $4,500 per person based on double occupancy

National Geographic Expeditions' 9-night Pearls of the Pacific voyage

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Travelers looking for a deep dive into the history and culture of the South Pacific should look no further than the 9-night Pearls of the Pacific Voyage to the Society and Tuamotu Islands from National Geographic Expeditions. The 102-passenger National Geographic Orion has exceptional maneuverability, so it can sail through shallow water, bays and small rivers. The two 2025 sailings depart on Jan. 29 and Feb. 28.

The cruise starts and ends in Papeete, Tahiti. Guests will first sail to the Tuamotu Archipelago where you can snorkel with reef sharks. In Fakarava, you can learn about pearl farming, while in Taha'a, you can explore a vanilla bean farm.

Active travelers will enjoy diving into Bora Bora's crystal clear waters or hiking through a pineapple plantation in Moorea. Raiatea is where you'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Marae Taputapuatea, where Polynesian seafarers would begin their journeys. A photography instructor, undersea specialist and National Geographic expert well-versed in the region and its culture will accompany the group on this voyage.

Who should go: National Geographic Expeditions is less about the onboard experience and more about exploring and understanding the destination you're visiting. The ships have all of the basics, like a restaurant and communal lounge, but lack the specialty restaurants and butler service of the luxury cruise lines.

National Geographic Orion was built for function rather than style. On board, you'll find a mud room with lockers for expedition gear and a fleet of rigid inflatable Zodiac boats that transfer guests from ship to shore. Everything from meals and excursions to alcohol and gratuities is included in the price.

Disney Cruise Line's 15-night South Pacific cruise

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

While Disney Cruise Line is mostly known for its family-friendly Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, it does occasionally send a ship wandering around the globe. In 2024 and 2025, the 2,713-passenger Disney Wonder will offer a 15-night South Pacific cruise , crossing the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to Sydney in October and from Sydney to Honolulu in February.

Both cruises visit Fiji, New Caledonia and American Samoa, but one itinerary stops in Maui while the other visits Kauai. The itinerary includes 10 days at sea, but you can count on Disney to keep you entertained with shows, movies, activities and character meet and greets, so you won't get bored during the long ocean crossing.

Who should go: Families with young kids (or homeschooled children) or adults looking for an upscale Disney vacation will enjoy these unusual Disney Wonder itineraries. This repositioning cruise is a good value for a Disney cruise, with inside cabins starting at $170 per person, per night, based on double occupancy. For comparison, a seven-night cruise to Alaska on Disney Wonder starts at $236 per person, per night, based on double occupancy.

Disney Wonder has dedicated spaces for kids like Disney's Oceaneer Club and Lab, where counselors lead children in games and activities from morning until night. Grownups looking to unwind can do so at the Quiet Cove Pool, which is exclusively adults-only and a great place to hang out on sunny sea days. Everyone can enjoy lively entertainment and themed dining, as well as meeting favorite Disney characters without the long waits you'd encounter at a Disney theme park.

Fares: From $5,111 per cabin, based on double occupancy

Royal Caribbean's 7- to 9-night South Pacific cruises from Brisbane

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

For the ultimate mix of unique destinations and exciting things to do on board, Royal Caribbean's South Pacific cruises from Brisbane, Australia, are ideal. The sailings take place on the 4,905-passenger Quantum of the Seas in 2025 and the 4,000-passenger Voyager of the Seas in 2026.

Ports of call for either season's weeklong sailings include Mystery Island, Vanuatu, where you can snorkel around coral reefs, and Port Vila, Vanuatu, where zip lining over the jungle canopy is a thrilling excursion. The nine-night sailing includes three Vanuatu stops and one in New Caledonia, the latter of which is great for swimming with sea turtles.

Who should go: If you're looking for an activity-filled big ship that isn't overwhelmingly huge, these Royal Caribbean ships will suit you. Voyager offers more onboard attractions for kids, such as water slides and minigolf, while Quantum has a more adult vibe with unique lounges and the indoor adults-only solarium.

Fares: From $589 per person based on double occupancy

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Step aboard Oceania Cruises' 10-night South Pacific cruise, sailing round-trip from Papeete, Tahiti. Sailings takes place on the 670-passenger Nautica or Regatta.

The itinerary includes visits to Moorea, Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Rangiroa and Raiatea, French Polynesia. Select itineraries include an overnight in Bora Bora where you can check into an overwater bungalow if desired. Bora Bora is also an ideal snorkeling destination where animals like manta rays can be seen gliding through the water.

Who should go: Older adults looking for a luxury cruise to some of the most beautiful islands in the South Pacific will love this sailing. While on board, guests can find a cozy spot to relax in the library, enjoy enrichment sessions led by experts, gamble in the casino or just sit back at the bar and chat with the bartenders while they mix cocktails. The outdoor pool and sports deck are great spots to take in the view of the ocean.

Oceania Cruises is known for its food, and the ship has an abundance of dining options for a smaller vessel. While the main dining room is your default for dinner, the specialty restaurants are really the star here. Toscana highlights regional Italian cuisine, while Polo Grill dishes out dry-aged steaks and tableside Caesar salads.

Fares: From $2,999 per person, based on double occupancy

Norwegian Cruise Line's 14-night South Pacific cruise

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

Head to the South Pacific from Hawaii on Norwegian Cruise Line's 14-night South Pacific cruise that starts in Honolulu and ends in the capital of French Polynesia — Papeete, Tahiti. The July 2025 sailing on the 1,936-passenger Norwegian Sun begins with a visit to Hawaiian island ports in Oahu, Maui, Kaua'i and Hawaii, where guests can snorkel, sunbathe and surf, or visit historic, cultural and natural sites — including an active volcano.

The ship will cross the Pacific during four days at sea and make its way to French Polynesia, where guests can explore Bora Bora, Raiatea, Moorea and Papeete. Raiatea offers a fantastic day of exploration; visit French Polynesia's largest outdoor temple and tour the most sacred island in the South Pacific.

Who should go: Cruisers who like to relax and make their own fun will enjoy this sailing on Norwegian Sun. The ship is an older, smaller vessel that doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that Norwegian Cruise Line 's newest ships have. Dining options are plentiful with 14 venues around the ship, from the complimentary poolside buffet and two main dining rooms to an extra-fee steakhouse and Mexican restaurant. The top deck, while small, is great for taking in the panoramic ocean views while sitting in a lounge chair.

CRUISE PORT GUIDES

Moorea cruise port

Moorea cruise ship at anchor

Moorea – French Polynesia: tender port

There are two different locations where you ship can drop anchor and tender you to shore. There is Cook’s Bay, which is always the first chosen tender spot, and there is Opunohu Bay which is also known as Papetoai.

At both tender locations you will find a pier with a souvenir market closeby. The local specialities are Tahitian Sarongs, Black Pearl jewellery, tiki’s and local art work.

Behind the souvenir market is where you find the guys selling the local tours. They are often written out for you on big billboards.

Local shore excursions at the cruise dock

The local shore excursions often give you a scenic bus ride around the island. They either visit Belvedere, Marae (sacred sites), the pineapple fields, tropical garden and the distillery. Often a 2 hour local tour will sell for about USD 40, AUS 60 or EUR 40. Most of them are Jeep tours. It basically comes down to this: there are 2 different bus tours sold on the cruise pier to independent travellers. They are both 2 hours and cost around 40 USD per person. You can also make a combo which will give you a discount. Other than that there might be a snorkelling, dive or boat excursion offered on the pier, but there might also not be. If this would be your number 1 choice to do you’d be better of to not take your chances and book the ship’s excursion for it.

Beaches close to Moorea cruise port

There are no beaches within walking distance of the cruise dock. The locals often offer a shuttle service to the beach, or you can also opt for a local taxi. Keep in mind the shuttle or the taxi shouldn’t cost you more than 5 US dollar per person as its only a few kilometers.

Shuttle bus to the pearl factory

There is often also a shuttle bus offered to one of the local pearl factories.

Moorea is simply not the port of call where you want to go search for wi-fi. You often have to go a long way to get a simple connection which is often not free. Your cruise itinerary often does a combination of Moorea and Tahiti. If that is the case, we highly recommend you to get your internet stuff done at one of the bars or restaurants in Papeete, Tahiti.

Things to see and do in Moorea:

– Have an dolphin encounter on a shore excursion. Moorea has a lot of dolphins around the island. Track them down with a local guide and have a close encounter with them. – Visit the Fruit Juice Factory of Moorea where you get an inside look on the juice factory and distillery where they produce all kind of drinks from local ingredients like pineapple, coconut and vanilla. – Wonder around the Tiki village and see their replica of Gauguin’s Maison de Jouir. There are an art gallery and black and white photos. Belvedere Lookout is where you will have amazing views over the mountains of Moorea. – Magic Mountain is known for its steep climb to the top, but rewarding views over the island.

The total number of port visits during Cruise Season around Australia will be up three per cent over last year to 1904 port calls.

From ships making their Australian debut to returning favourites, it's the perfect time for cruisers to not only have the opportunity to try a ship they'd normally have to fly overseas to board but also for these cruise brands to introduce their style of cruising Down Under, capturing new fans.

Can you now see why I'm excited?

'Tis the time for cruise ship spotting

Do you know what my favourite past-time is during Cruise Season? Sitting at Circular Quay in Sydney and watching the ships glide into the most beautiful harbour in the world. Maybe I'm a bit biased, but many cruise ship captains agree with me about the beauty of Sydney Harbour.

Over the next few months, at every opportunity, I'll head to the Quay in the early hours of the morning – especially if it's the first time a certain ship has cruised in to Sydney – or late on in the afternoon to wave off these gorgeous vessels as they head out to another adventure.

Honey Tip: The BEST place to see off your friends and family if they're cruising from Circular Quay is from the Opera House forecourt. Best vantage spot in Sydney.

What are the best months to cruise Australia?

Obviously, the best, or as I like to say, better months to cruise depends on the itinerary you want to explore. We're lucky in Australia that winter cruising to Queensland is lovely – I've cruised many times to Queensland in winter as my birthday is in July).

Also, while the temps are milder in the South Pacific during Winter and Spring, the bonus is that there's less chance of encountering a tropical cyclone (which are most common from November to April).

Summer cruising from Australia is ideal for families – especially those who can only get away during the December – February school holiday.

Whichever month you choose to cruise, make an informed decision on the probability of weather and the impact it might have on activities and ports you wish to visit.

So long to an Aussie favourite

There really isn't year-round cruising in our waters, except for Australia's only home-grown cruise line P&O Australia and Carnival Cruise Line. Between the two cruise lines, they operate five ships – Pacific Explorer, Pacific Adventure, Pacific Encounter, Carnival Splendor Carnival Luminosa – which cruise all year around Australia, the South Pacific and New Zealand.

If you haven't heard the news, this will be the last season for P&O Australia. The iconic cruise brand will fold into its parent company Carnival Cruise Line in March 2025.

Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure will be re-badged Carnival Encounter and Carnival Adventure and Pacific Explorer will be retired in February.

Honey Fun Fact: Pacific Explorer used to be the Dawn Princess and the FIRST cruise ship ever cruised on. There'll be a few tears when I bid her adieu.

cruising with 9travel honida beram

A P&O Australia spokesperson said the overwhelming reaction from their guests was that they're pleased Adventure and Encounter are going to continue being based in Sydney and Brisbane.

"Our guests are excited every time they cruise, so of course they are excited about their summer holiday plans this year!" the spokesperson said.

For the shipload of P&O loyal fans, this cruise season will be a farewell voyage, with many cruisers – including myself – booking 'one last cruise' on P&O.

In fact, I'm taking over 100 other P&O Australia fans with me on the second-last cruise for Pacific Adventure on 6 March to bid adieu a brand that's been part of our country for 90 years.

Carnival Splendor has sailed home to Sydney with a range of new onboard upgrades following her dry dock in Singapore. The ship now boasts updated dining venues, various stateroom and amenity refurbishments, and the striking red, white, and blue hull design that's become the trademark look of Carnival's fleet. The ship's hull design also includes a unique feature: a Southern Cross motif – a signature element of P&O Cruises Australia ships that will soon join the Carnival fleet.

The new, the shiny, and the fan favourites

During the next few months, we'll see ships making their Aussie debut , others returning, and we'll even see The World on October 7 - a super luxurious vessel that is touted as the largest private residential yacht. I'll definitely be there to greet this charming ship.

Family favourites Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas will offer over 40 sailings between October 2024 and April 2025. What I'm most excited about is seeing the iconic North Star which gives guests a 360-degree view at a height of more than 90m. And, I just love the Two70 Bar with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Royal Caribbean had a bumper year last year, clocking their biggest Australian season ever with more than 250,000 cruisers sailing with them from Australia.

Royal Caribbean's Public Relations Manager APAC told me there was a surge in interest for cruise holidays in Australia among younger holidaymakers.

"A significant portion of these guests are embarking on their first-ever cruise experience, specifically in Queensland where Quantum of the Seas introduced a whole new holiday experience to the market."

She added their weekender cruises from Sydney and Brisbane "are a hit with groups of young friends looking for a hassle-free, relaxing getaway." Hmm.. I might have to add a weekender to my list this cruise season. I'm still young (at heart), right?

More unique experiences on offer

As a foodie, I'm salivating about getting onboard for a tour when Silversea's Silver Nova arrives in November. During her time in Australia and New Zealand waters, Silversea will introduce the culinary concept S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste). Hosted both onboard and ashore, Nova will offer a range of new destination-inspired culinary experiences.

For something that is completely unique this season (drum roll please), the debut of Ponant's Paspaley Pearl. This luxury boutique motor yacht promises itineraries that will offer guests access to some of Paspaley's private spots in the pearling region in the Kimberley.

(N.B Paspaley is Australia's largest and oldest pearling company).

Ponant's Marketing & Communications Director Australasia Charles Boutet told me the luxurious expedition yacht will also offer unique experiences onboard such as culinary gastronomic experiences inspired by the regions they visit.

"Think fresh barramundi, pear meat from the farm. With a high ratio of four expedition leaders for 30 passengers it will allow for a total personable experience for in-depth immersion into a destination and total relaxed luxury on board," he said.

Kimberley, WA

Norwegian Sun's debut is also something I'm really looking forward to as Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is launching a new collection of voyages including itineraries to the Great Barrier Reef & South Pacific between Cairns, Australia and Lautoka, Fiji, three island-hopping French Polynesia cruises between Fiji and Tahiti, and two Asia sailings.

If you're a Viking fan, as I am, the arrival of Viking Venus is something to celebrate and skol! This sleek Scandinavian-designed ship is making her maiden call in Australia, arriving in Darwin in November and embarking on several two-week cruises (Sydney to Auckland - Auckland to Sydney until March).

Viking ANZ Managing Director Michelle Black said "this new roundtrip voyage from Sydney is great for those who are unable to fly long distances. We are pleased to be able to take guests on this exciting local itinerary that offers the absolute best Australia has to offer by sea."

And let's not forget the Queens! In particular Queen Anne, Cunard's newest and luxurious vessel in their fleet. I can't wait to see her striking hull in the harbour.

If you have the time to head to Sydney Harbour on October 18, you won't see just one or two ships, but three: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth, Disney Cruise Line's Disney Wonder, and P&O's Pacific Adventure. I hope it's a bright sunny day to greet these beauties.

I now declare Cruise Season is now open!

Stay tuned for more expert advice in the next instalment of Cruising with 9Travel.

New Orleans

royal caribbean cruise french polynesia

New Orleans, with its richly mottled old buildings, its sly, sophisticated - sometimes almost disreputable - air, and its Hispanic-Gallic traditions, has more the flavor of an old European capital than an American city. Townhouses in the French Quarter, with their courtyards and carriageways, are thought by some scholars to be related on a small scale to certain Parisian "hotels" - princely urban residences of the 17th and 18th centuries. Visitors particularly remember the decorative cast-iron balconies that cover many of these townhouses like ornamental filigree cages. European influence is also seen in the city's famous above-ground cemeteries. The practice of interring people in large, richly adorned above-ground tombs dates from the period when New Orleans was under Spanish rule. These hugely popular "cities of the dead" have been and continue to be an item of great interest to visitors. Mark Twain, noting that New Orleanians did not have conventional below-ground burials, quipped that "few of the living complain and none of the other." The spine of Uptown, and much of New Orleans, is the city's grand residential rue, St. Charles Avenue, which was aptly described in the novel "A Confederacy of Dunces": "The ancient oaks of St. Charles Avenue arched over the avenue like a canopy... St. Charles Avenue must be the loveliest place in the world. From time to time... passed the slowly rocking streetcars that seemed to be leisurely moving toward no special destinations, following their route through the old mansions on either side... Everything looked so calm, so prosperous." The streetcars in question, the St. Charles Line, represent the nation's only surviving historic streetcar system. All 35 electric cars were manufactured by the Brill & Perley Thomas Company between 1922 and 1924 and are still in use - truly a national treasure. Creole cottages and shotgun houses dominate the scene in many New Orleans neighborhoods. Both have a murky ancestry. The Creole cottage, two rooms wide and two or more rooms deep under a generous pitched roof with a front overhang or gallery, is thought to have evolved from various European and Caribbean forms. The shotgun house is one room wide and two, three or four rooms deep under a continuous gable roof. As legend has it, the name was suggested by the fact that because the rooms and doors line up, one can fire a shotgun through the house without hitting anything. Some scholars have suggested that shotguns evolved from ancient African "long-houses," but no one really knows. It is true that shotguns represent a distinctively Southern house type. They are also found in the form of plantation quarters houses. Unlike shotgun houses in much of the South, which are fairly plain, New Orleans shotguns fairly bristle with Victorian jigsaw ornament, especially prominent, florid brackets. Indeed, in many ways New Orleans shotguns are as much a signature of the city as the French Quarter. One of the truly amazing aspects of New Orleans architecture is the sheer number of historic homes and buildings per square mile. New Orleanians never seem to replace anything. Consider this, Uptown, the city's largest historic district, has almost 11,000 buildings, 82 percent of which were built before 1935 - truly a "time warp." New Orleans' architectural character is unlike that of any other American city. A delight to both natives and visitors, it presents such a variety that even after many years of study, one can still find things unique and undiscovered.

The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cuzamil, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have a number of unusual features and include certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.
