Travel with OCBC: Redeem Travel$ & VOYAGE Miles for flights at excellent rates

Round-trip Business Class to Europe for less than 90,000 miles, with no blackout dates, fuel surcharges, and regular mileage accrual? Yes: Travel with OCBC.

OCBC has launched a travel portal called Travel with OCBC , which enables OCBC cardholders to spend their rewards points on flights, hotels and rental cars, with no blackout dates, no capacity restrictions and instant confirmation. 

While the concept isn’t new (other banks have similar portals for spending rewards points on travel), what’s exciting is the excellent value OCBC is offering till 30 November 2021  for Travel$ redemptions, particularly for Business Class flights.

As we’ll soon see, the depressed pricing for premium cabins brought about by the pandemic has created some unique opportunities for outsized value. Round-trip Business Class to Europe for the equivalent of ~76,000 miles, with no capacity controls, no cash co-payments, and the ability to earn miles and elite credits?

While that sounds too good to be true, it’s very, very possible. 

Overview: Travel with OCBC

First, let’s do a quick overview of the Travel by OCBC interface. It’s similar to what you’d find on many other OTAs (online travel agents): enter your desired dates, destination and number of travellers, then hit “search”. 

To redeem OCBC rewards points and enjoy preferential hotel rates (which can be up to 40% lower, based on the searches I’ve done), remember to sign-in using your OCBC internet banking credentials. 

Travel with OCBC offers bookings for hotels…

…flights…

…and rental cars.

All bookings must be made at least 2 days in advance. 

What’s unique about Travel with OCBC is that payment can be made either in cash, rewards points (OCBC$, Travel$, VOYAGE Miles), or a mixture of the two. Notice the sliding bar at the top of each screen which lets you change the mix. 

The value per point differs depending on what you redeem (hotels, rental cars, flights), and for flights, what cabin you redeem (Economy, Premium Economy, Business, First). Here’s the value per point that I’ve observed, based on my searches:

The way I see it, the sweet spot for value is redeeming Travel$ /VOYAGE Miles for Business Class tickets .

Booking sweet spot airfares on Travel with OCBC

Here’s where things get really exciting. 

For a limited time, you can get ~2.52 cents per Travel$ or VOYAGE Mile when booking Business Class airfares on Travel with OCBC. That’s a very  good valuation, especially when you combine it with ongoing Business Class fare deals.

For example, Turkish Airlines is currently offering sub-S$2,500 round-trip Business Class fares to Europe, which means sub-100,000 Travel$ redemptions. That’s phenomenal. 

Likewise, Etihad is offering sub-S$2,000 round-trip Business Class fares to Athens, which means you could redeem a ticket for just ~76,000 Travel$. 

Here’s a summary of what I managed to find. For the sake of comparison, I’ve added how much each of these tickets would cost if you redeemed it with KrisFlyer miles- keep in mind there’s still taxes (and fuel surcharges, in certain cases) to be paid with cash on KrisFlyer redemptions, while the Travel$ prices are nett.

Consider Berlin. For half the number of miles, you could:

• Get a confirmed seat on the exact date you want, instead of praying that award space opens up
• Avoid paying hefty fuel surcharges and taxes in cash (they’re already included in the Travel with OCBC price)
• Earn miles and elite status credits with your preferred frequent flyer programme (since Travel with OCBC is basically like buying a paid ticket)

Savings are the most pronounced when we consider destinations Singapore Airlines doesn’t fly to (because redeeming Star Alliance awards may come with fuel surcharges), but it’s still incredible value when you consider the destinations they do. 

London, for example, is notorious for high airport taxes thanks to its Air Passenger Duty . Redeeming a Singapore Airlines flight would cost 184,000 miles + S$457 of cash. Redeeming Travel$ for Turkish Airlines? 100,304 Travel$, no cash . 

While Turkey was classified as a Category II country at the time this article was published, Qatar and the UAE will join the VTL in December. This means you can transit in Doha and Abu Dhabi to and from Singapore, with no impact on your eligibility for SHN-free travel.

Given a value of 2.52 cents per Travel$ and the current KrisFlyer award chart, it’s possible to work out a heuristic of sorts:

• For Europe: if fare <S$4,655, booking on Travel with OCBC is better than KrisFlyer
• For West Coast USA: if fare <S$4,800, booking on Travel with OCBC is better than KrisFlyer
• For East Coast USA: if fare <S$5,010, booking on Travel with OCBC is better than KrisFlyer
• For Australia: if fare <S$3,135, booking on Travel with OCBC is better than KrisFlyer

This hasn’t even taken into account the fact that Travel with OCBC tickets don’t have blackout dates, fuel surcharges/taxes to pay in cash, and earn miles & elite status credits. 

Launch promotions

From now till 15 January 2022, OCBC cardholders who book hotels, flights or car rentals on the Travel with OCBC platform will earn up to 8 mpd as follows:

The earn rate applies to the  cash  portion of your booking. For example, if you paid for your booking with S$100 and 2,000 Travel$, you’d earn 3-8 mpd (depending on card) on the S$100 portion. 

All stays, flights and car rentals must be completed by 30 June 2022 , and bonus Travel$/OCBC$/VOYAGE Miles will be credited up to two months after booking completion. 

One important thing to note: Travel with OCBC charges a 2.5% service fee for any cancelled reservation made on the platform. This fee is waived for payments made with points or via the OCBC Pay Anyone mobile app (which lets you use your OCBC card anyway). 

Other promotions

OCBC cardholders will receive S $60 off a minimum spend of S$400 for their first ever booking on Travel with OCBC with the promo code TRAVEL60 . This is valid for use until 31 January 2022 (T&Cs apply).  

Customers who are approved for an OCBC 90°N Visa between 8 November 2021 and 31 January 2022 will receive a voucher for S$100 off a minimum spend of S$500 on their first booking on Travel with OCBC. This offer only applies to new-to-bank customers, i.e. those who do not currently hold any principal OCBC credit cards, and have not in the past 12 months (T&Cs apply).

Travel with OCBC is marking its launch with some sensational rates for redeeming flights with Travel$ and VOYAGE Miles. Do keep in mind these are limited-time launch rates which will be adjusted from 1 December, so it’d be a good idea to check out the portal in the next few days and lock in any flights.

We would need to know the usual redemption rates to assess the long-term viability of switching to an OCBC card.

perhaps factor in the cost/ease of earning voyage miles (1.3 mpd) / travel$ (1.2/1 mpd) at the normal rates compared to the other 4mpd cards, and the OCBC redemption rates may not seem that great after all. also, redeeming on OCBC is dependent on the actual cost of the flights as well.

that said, always good to have options and not be limited by award availability.

A lot of people made hay when ocbc had the no cap 4 mpd launch offer with the Ocbc 90n MC, and the current (albeit capped) 4 mpd on fcy spend with Ocbc 90n visa is another good opportunity to rack up too.

There are people who have a lot of use for general spend cards and this is great for them. Also up to 1.6 mpd.

VMs can be bought at 1.14 cpm using Cardup which means the EY flight to Athens costs $868, the QR flight to Barcelona costs $1,034 and the TK flight to Zurich costs $1,143! Incredible.!

Any idea if SQ business tickets purchased (100% voyage miles) through Travel with OCBC would be able to earn krisflyer miles and PPS value from the flight?

Valuation has been crippled with first & business class CPM dropping by 15%, not sure if still a worthwhile product especially with expensive plane tickets relative to miles redemption (SQ KF)

YouTrip Review—Guide to YouTrip Card, Exchange Rates & Promo Codes

Which is your preferred multi-currency account for travel spending? We asked this question on our Telegram channel recently, and guess which came out on top? Yup—YouTrip. I guess their claim to be “Singapore’s favourite multi-currency wallet” is justified.

YouTrip is a digital multi-currency travel wallet that enables you to exchange currencies on the go and spend overseas using a card. Cash is so 2000 and late, and we are so done with queueing up to exchange huge wads of cash at a money changer and praying we wouldn’t get robbed on the way home.

But there are tons of multi-currency cards out there. What makes YouTrip a popular choice among people in Singapore? Let’s review their exchange rate, fees, perks and more.

What is YouTrip?

YouTrip is a multi-currency travel wallet created by EZ-Link (yes, you heard that right) in partnership with You Technologies Group Limited, a company based in Hong Kong and Singapore. YouTrip was launched in 2018

Designed for travellers based in Singapore (and Thailand since 2019), YouTrip enables you exchange currencies using their smartphone application. You can then spend or withdraw money overseas using your YouTrip card, which is linked with MasterCard.

Since October 2019, YouTrip has obtained an electronic money licence to become primary issuer and stored value facility holder. This means that balances will be now held under YouTrip rather than EZ-link. It has also since expanded to Thailand.

YouTrip’s main competitors are other multi-currency travel wallets like Revolut , Wise and Instarem Amaze , all of which provide almost the same service functionally. Comparing these deserves a whole article by itself ; we’re focusing on spilling the nitty gritty details of YouTrip in this one.

Are YouTrip exchange rates good?

YouTrip’s exchange rates are based on Mastercard’s wholesale rates and mid-market rates.

You can get a YouTrip card and convert currencies in-app using mid-market rates . For the 150+ currencies that are currently not available for exchange in-app, they will be converted using  Mastercard’s wholesale rates .

When you compare it with its competitors like Wise and Revolut who use mid-market rates, YouTrip currency exchange rates may not necessarily be better, but there are instances where it could be.

For example, on weekends, Revolut charges a 1% markup fee, so on Saturdays and Sundays you may find that YouTrip provides better rates.

Another factor to consider is which currency you’re working with. Since Wise and Revolut are services that originated from the UK, they tend to provide competitive rates for GBP.

So, if you have no brand loyalty and just want the cheapest rates, you might want to have a few of these cards on hand so you can monitor and compare depending on which country and when you’re exchanging money.

Using multiple cards is also a good idea if you know you’re going to be withdrawing more cash overseas—most of these cards have monthly limits to how much cash you can withdraw for free, after which you’ll be charged a fee. YouTrip has the highest free withdrawal limit of S$400, with Revolut and Wise close behind at $350.

Benefits of YouTrip

Let’s break down YouTrip’s benefits:

• Exchange 10 currencies (SGD, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, HKD, AUD, NZD, CHF and SEK) 24/7 using their app. You can monitor the exchange rates in order to lock down the best rates.
• Pay using your linked MasterCard in 150+ countries while getting charged 0% transaction fees on the wholesale exchange rate.
• Withdraw up to $400 cash from overseas ATMs labelled MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus for free each month. Further withdrawals will incur a 2% withdrawal fee.
• No annual card fees, minimum income or account balance required.
• YouTrip will also give you a virtual card that lets you make seamless in-app and online payments. You don’t need to pull out the physical card at checkout!
• Add your YouTrip card to Apply Pay or Google Pay for easy contactless mobile payments. You can even link YouTrip with WeChat Pay to make payments in China  easily!

I have a personal story to share about how useful the last 2 points are. I was headed to the UK with my mum last month. She dug out her YouTrip card about 8 hours before we were supposed to fly—only to find that it had expired months ago! YouTrip had sent her a new card, but she couldn’t find it.

Thankfully, she did have her virtual YouTrip card on the YouTrip app. This let her add the card to her Apple Pay, and that’s how she paid for pretty much everything in London! Technology does occasionally let us down, but sometimes digital options are a lifesaver.

How do I sign up for the YouTrip card?

Simply download the YouTrip app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and fill in the sign-up form. You will be required to have your NRIC on hand.

Then, simply wait for your YouTrip MasterCard to arrive in the mail. It takes anywhere between 7 and 15 days for it to arrive. When it does, you need to enter the 10-digit Y-number on the back of your card to pair the card to your account. This number is just for things like card activation and verification—it can’t be used to authorise payments.

YouTrip fees

Perhaps the best perk about YouTrip is the lack of any fees to use their platform. There are no foreign exchange fees, annual membership fee, transaction fees, account fall-below fees or the like.

The one thing you may need to pay for is ATM withdrawals if you withdraw more than $400 a month. The charge after the first $400 is 2% and cannot be waived.

If you don’t have a YouTrip card, sign up with IGYT5 to get S$5 loaded into your account for free.

YouTrip users enjoy some perks  at selected merchants just for having the card. There’s an entire roster of rewards that users can claim by entering their card’s Y-number. The rewards, however, are subjected to limited redemptions and only valid till certain dates.

As of 18 Apr 2024, I counted 21 perks you can redeem. That’s definitely a lot more than when YouTrip first started out. Perks include:

• Up to 10% cashback on Shopee—valid till 31 Dec 2024
• Up to 15% off Don Quijote (a.k.a. Don Don Donki)—valid till 1 Oct 2024
• Up to 10% cashback on Booking.com (stays only)—valid till 31 Aug 2024
• Up to 12% cashback on Amazon Singapore—valid till 31 Dec 2024

YouTrip vs Revolut vs Wise: How does YouTrip compare to similar cards?

YouTrip offers a very similar experience to similar multi-currency travel wallets like Revolut and Wise.

YouTrip is quite competitive and transparent—they aren’t lying when they say they don’t charge extra fees other than the fee incurred if you withdraw more than S$400 a month from ATMs overseas. By comparison, Revolut might charge mark-ups on weekends when you spend in certain currencies. (Not that Revolut hides this fact; it’ll be reflected in the app if you try to convert currency on a weekend.)

YouTrip was also the first multi-currency e-wallet to raise their wallet limit to S$20,000 and annual spending limit to S$100,000 , following a change in MAS regulations . That’s up from S$5,000  and S$30,000 respectively, so it’s kinda. a big deal. If you know you’re going to be making a big purchase overseas, YouTrip is your best option until Revolut and Wise catch up—they are still capping wallet and spending limits at S$5,000 and S$30,000 respectively.

One small disadvantage to YouTrip is that it doesn’t offer some of the other perks that Revolut and Wise give you, such as enabling you to make international money transfers.

However, YouTrip’s biggest weakness falls pretty close to home.

Y ou can’t transfer remaining YouTrip funds back into a bank account in Singapore.

While it seems Thailand users can do this , Singapore users can’t. Neither can they withdraw the money from local ATMs in Singapore. So we have to come up with creative ways to get money out of YouTrip cards . The 2 main schools of thought are:

• Use it up in Singapore : Use it for everyday spending in Singapore—food, transport, retail, and more.
• Transfer it : Use  YouTrip Send to transfer your extra cash to a friend or family member’s YouTrip account if they’re travelling overseas soon, then get them to PayLah you back in SGD.

One Redditor came up with this solution: Buy a NETS FlashPay card, top it up with the money in your YouTrip, then get the NETS FlashPay card refunded at an ATM. Note that each NETS FlashPay card can only store up to $500.
