De eerste WorldTour-koers van 2024 is alweer ten einde, met Stephen Williams als verdiende winnaar namens Israel-Premier Tech. Andere hoofdrolspelers waren Sam Welsford (BORA-hansgrohe), Isaac del Toro (UAE-Team Emirates), Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL) en onze eigen Bart Lemmen (Visma | Lease a Bike).

Tour Down Under 2024: uitslagen en klassementsleiders

Etappe 1, dinsdag 16 januari 2024: tanunda - tanunda (144 km).

De Tour Down Under ging van start met een rit van en naar Tanunda. Een gekende etappe in de Australische rittenkoers en doorgaans spek naar de bek van de snelle mannen. Zo ook in 2024, met een perfecte lead-out van BORA-hansgrohe en Danny van Poppel voor Sam Welsford. De Aussie klopte Phil Bauhaus en Biniam Girmay .

Etappe 2, woensdag 17 januari 2024: Norwood - Lobethal (141,6 km)

Op dag twee stond de coureurs direct een soort overgangsrit te wachten, met meer dan 2400 hoogtemeters in 141 kilometer. De beklimming van Fox Creek bleek een cruciale: Luke Plapp en Jhonatan Narváez reden daarop samen weg, maar de samenwerking stokte. Vervolgens leek het een klim met een selecte groep te worden, maar het Mexicaanse toptalent Isaac del Toro verraste iedereen met een uitval in de slotkilometer.

Etappe 3, donderdag 18 januari 2024: Tea Tree Gully - Campbelltown (145,3 km)

Op dag drie wederom een lastige start, ditmaal bij Tea Tree Gully. Daar liepen de eerste twee kilometer venijnig omhoog, maar daarmee hadden we het zwaarste wel direct gehad. Zodoende kregen we net als op dag één een sprint, met dezelfde uitkomst: Sam Welsford die namens een perfecte lead-out van Danny van Poppel de zege pikt.

Etappe 4, vrijdag 19 januari 2024: Murray Bridge - Port Elliot (136,2 km)

De vierde rit was ontegenzeggelijk de gemakkelijkste etappe van de Tour Down Under van dit jaar, met slechts 481 hoogtemeters. Sprinten dus, waar we voor de derde keer dezelfde winnaar kregen met Sam Welsford. De BORA-hansgrohe-spurter won op zijn verjaardag en verzachtte daarmee de pijn van het thuispubliek, dat Luke Plapp na een val een dag eerder niet meer op zag stappen.

Etappe 5, zaterdag 20 januari 2024: christies beach - willunga hill (129,3 km).

Daar is Willunga Hill! Sinds jaar en dag scherprechter van de Tour Down Under, maar vorig seizoen even niet. In de 2024-editie was de welgekende heuvel nabij Adelaide echter 'gewoon' weer terug, maar hij leek niet weggeweest. Jayco AlUla maakte er in dienst van Simon Yates een harde klim van, maar uiteindelijk werd het toch een sprintje met een selecte groep. Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL) was daar de snelste van en mocht ook de leiderstrui aantrekken.

Etappe 6, zondag 21 januari 2024: Unley - Mount Lofty (128,2 km)

Vorig seizoen werd de Tour Down Under voor een eerste maal beslist op Mount Lofty, maar dit seizoen koos de organisatie zelfs voor de combi Willunga-Lofty in het slotweekeinde. Stephen Williams en Oscar Onley gingen de dag in dezelfde tijd in, maar de Welshman bleek uiteindelijk over een stuk betere benen te beschikken dan de Schot. Williams slaagde er zelfs in om de slotrit te winnen, voor Jhonatan Narváez en revelaties Isaac del Toro en Bart Lemmen.

De Tour Down Under loopt jaarlijks tegelijkertijd met de Australian Open en dat betekent dat we de koers niet live op de Nederlandse TV zien. Eurosport.nl biedt uitkomst met livebeelden van de koers, die dagelijks in zijn geheel te zien is op dat platform en Discovery+ . De aankomst is dagelijks rond vijf á zes uur in de Nederlandse ochtend.

Raceverslag Bij de eerste tussensprint is het peloton nog bijeen en dat inspireert Finn Fisher-Black, Corbin Strong en Jhonatan Narváez tot een inspanning. Ze komen in die volgorde over de lijn. Vervolgens gaan Georg Zimmermann en Louis Barré er na een slordige 25 kilometer samen vandoor. Logischerwijs pakken ze de bonificatieseconden bij de tweede tussensprint mee, terwijl Corbin Strong de resterende seconde oppakt.

De twee vluchters worden na de tweede keer Menglers Hill opgeslokt door het peloton.

In de straten van Tanunda zet Sam Welsford een kroon op een sterke lead-out van Ryan Mullen en Danny van Popppel. Phil Bauhaus en Biniam Girmay komen als tweede en derde over de lijn.

BEKIJK: Australiër Sam Welsford opent Tour Down Under met sprintzege: "Met bijna 100 km/u in de finale"

Aan de andere kant van de wereld is het wielerseizoen van start gegaan met een zege voor de Australische sprinter Sam Welsford (Bora-hansgrohe). Hij was in eigen land de snelste in de openingsrit van de Tour Down Under. Biniam Girmay en Caleb Ewan beten in het (rode) zand.

Sam Welsford  heeft zijn nieuwe ploeg meteen een zege geschonken. De 27-jarige Australiër, opgeleid op de piste, was iedereen te snel af in rit 1 van de Tour Down Under .

Welsford kon in Tanunda rekenen op een lead-out van de Nederlander Danny van Poppel. De nieuwkomer bij Bora-Hansgrohe  rondde het werk uitstekend af, hij won voor de Duitser Phil Bauhaus, de Eritreeër Biniam Girmay en een andere Australiër, Caleb Ewan. Milan Fretin was de beste Belg op de 12e plaats.

Welsford is uiteraard ook de eerste klassementsleider, met 4 bonificatieseconden voorsprong op Bauhaus en 6 op Girmay.

Uitslag Rit 1

"niet voldaan met een ritzege".

De honger is groot bij Sam Welsford. "We gingen met bijna 100 kilometer per uur naar de laatste kilometers", blies hij na afloop.

De sprinter won niet alleen in eigen land, hij scoorde ook meteen voor Bora-hansgrohe. "Het is heel speciaal om in mijn eerste koers meteen te winnen. Ik ben nieuw, het is belangrijk dat ik voor de resultaten zorg."

Voor een Australiër is de Tour Down Under bijna zo belangrijk als de Ronde van Frankrijk.

"Ik heb nu een ritzege beet, maar voldaan zijn we niet", zei Welsford. "Ik heb veel zin in de rest van deze koers. Morgen denk ik dat de klassementsrenners het ons lastig gaan maken, maar ritten 3 en 4 zijn ook heel goeie sprintkansen."

De Tour Down Under duurt nog tot en met zondag.

Women's Tour Down Under: Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig wins stage 2 and takes over lead

Top 25 overall separated by just 10 seconds ahead of deciding Willunga Hill stage

How it unfolded

Cecile Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ) won stage two of the 2024 Women's Tour Down Under in a reduced uphill sprint finish in Stirling. The Dane took a commanding win over Soraya Paladin (Canyon-SRAM) in second and Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE Team ADQ) in third.

Stage one winner Ally Wollaston (AG Insurance – Soudal) was dropped on the approach to the line, meaning that Uttrup Ludwig also moved into the race lead with one stage to go. Bertizzolo sits in second place two seconds down and Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Liv AlUla Jayco) is in third a further second behind Uttrup Ludwig.

Uttrup Ludwig and the FDJ-SUEZ squad had to deal with a late change of plan in the approach to the finale but responded to great effect.

“Plan A was to sprint for Grace [Brown] and we actually had it all figured out how to do it and I was excited about that, but then Grace didn’t feel so good, so we had to change the plan and I’m just happy I could execute,” Uttrup Ludwig said after the finish.

It’s the first win of the season for the 28-year-old and she was pleased to be able to tick that box early in the year.

“It just feels so good being in Australia where my boyfriend comes from and taking a win. It’s just awesome.”

With the margins in the overall classification so tight, the race now heads for a final stage showdown on Willunga Hill. Uttrup Ludwig is looking forward to defending her lead on the iconic climb.

“I’m just excited, I’ve done it a couple of times as recon and I think it’s going to be fireworks. It should be exciting.”

The longest stage in the history of the women's Tour Down Under started on the beachfront in Glenelg. 104.2 lumpy kilometres were ahead of the riders en route to a familiar leg-sapping finish in Stirling.

The tone for the day was set early on as the peloton determined to set a solid pace up the first category climb of Cherry Gardens Hill. Several riders quickly went out the back with more than 90 kilometres still to race. 

Katia Ragusa (Human Powered Health) continued her good form from stage one as she crested the climb first in defence of her Queen of the Mountain jersey. With the points earned here and on the other classified climb in the stage, Ragusa looks to be on the way to securing that classification at the end of the race.

Cherry Gardens Hill was just a starter for a day full of intensity. Teams were happy to keep the pace high throughout most of the stage, which foiled any attempt to form an early breakaway.

Knowing that this race is bound to be decided by a few seconds, the quicker riders with designs on overall success once again saw a chance to take advantage in the general classification at the first intermediate sprint in Meadows. It was Dominika Wlodarczyk (UAE Team ADQ) who took the maximum points and bonus seconds ahead of Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Liv Jayco AlUla) and Grace Brown (FDJ-SUEZ).

Before entering the tough circuit around Stirling, Wlodarczyk comfortably took the second intermediate sprint ahead of Roseman-Gannon once more, making it six bonus seconds for the day from the two sprints for the young Pole. Both now sit three seconds off the lead heading for Willunga Hill on stage 3.

The pace in the peloton remained high the first time around the circuit, which meant the group stayed largely together despite a few attacks. 

The climbs around Stirling are not steep, but the efforts accumulate over time and the group started to stretch and reduce in size on the second lap of three under the impetus of Lidl-Trek and FDJ-SUEZ. 

With 16km to go Emily Watts (Australia) surged clear of the group and quickly built up a lead of half a minute as the road descended towards the base of the final climb.

Watts was reeled in with 8km to go and on the climb, AG Insurance-Soudal took control of the front of the peloton in support of race leader Ally Wollaston and their general classification rider Sarah Gigante. 

The final kilometre seemed to take an age as the road dragged on. Several riders surged forward to the front of the ever-reducing peloton before realising that their efforts were too soon.

Uttrup Ludwig though was patient, sitting and waiting in the top-5 before kicking with 150 metres to go as the gradient flattened. Paladin was on her wheel, but couldn’t respond to the FDJ-SUEZ rider’s acceleration and the Dane took victory by a few bike-lengths on a finish perfectly suited to her characteristics. 

Uttrup Ludwig will now wear the ochre jersey on the race’s final battle up Willunga Hill on the third and final stage.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
