How to Reach Nainital

By Air: Nainital does not have direct air connectivity. The nearest airport is in Pantnagar which is well-connected to New Delhi and Mumbai via SpiceJet and Air India. From Pantnagar, you can take a cab to Nainital.

By Road: Nainital enjoys excellent road connectivity to and from important cities in North India. Several tour operators operate daily bus services from New Delhi to Nainital. By Train: The nearest railway station from Nainital is located at a distance of 34km in Kathgodam. Kathgodam railway station enjoys good connectivity to and from cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Howrah. From Kathgodam, taxis and buses are available for Nainital.

Naina Devi Temple

Situated along the northern end of the Naini Lake, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati. It is counted as one of the 64 Shakti Peeth devoted to goddess Shakti. This makes it a must visit place in Nainital tour packages. According to legend, the eye of Goddess Sati fell at this spot when her mortal remains were being carried to Mt. Kailash by Lord Shiva. This is how she began to be worshipped as Naina Devi. Also known as Nanda Devi Temple, it is one of the most religiously significant places to visit in Nainital. Located 4 km from the city centre, Land's End is situated at an altitude of 2118 meters. It has also been mentioned as one of the 18 important Shiva temples in Hindu scriptures. The shrine has a simple architecture with a flight of stone stairs that lead devotees to the main shrine. Chauli Ki Jali

History of Nainital

After the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-16, the Kumaon hills came under the British rule and the hill station Nainital was founded in 1841 when the first European house was constructed by P. Baron, a sugar trader from Shahjahanpur. The oldest buildings of Nainital includes the St. John's church snuggled in the wilderness of Nainital, followed by Belvedere, Alma, Asdale Cottage built in 1860.

Soon the lesser known town of Nainital became the hotspot of the British soldiers and colonial officials who came with their families to escape the scorching heat of the plain areas. Around 1880, Nainital came to be known as the exclusive British summer getaway in India. In the 19th century, some of the prestigious English schools were established in Nainital that only enrolled British children.

Nainital finds mention in various ancient myths and legends. The Naini temple at the banks of Naini Lake holds a lot of significance especially among the Hindus as it is believed to be one of the 64 Shakti Peeths in India.

According to the Hindu mythology, the Naini Lake one of the popular tourist attractions of Nainital is the place where the eyes or ' nain ' of Sati fell, when Lord Shiva was carrying her charred body to Kailash.
