This Waterfront Hotel in Greenland Has a New Glass-domed Igloo Perfect for Watching the Northern Lights

Welcome to your real-life snow globe.

Stephanie Vermillion

If there’s one way to spend a quintessential night in Greenland, it’s counting seabirds and distant icebergs to fall asleep, then waking up to 180-degree views of falling snow. I did this all from bed in my glass igloo, with a private sauna — and a wood-fired hot tub — mere steps from the tiny home’s door.

That's how I spent one magical October night in Greenland’s new real-life snow globe , with 180-degree views from the Nuuk fjord out to the Sermitsiaq mountain. The first-of-its-kind glass igloo, which opened in summer 2022, was perfect for admiring ice, scouting the northern lights, or warming up in the igloo’s sauna.

This cozy accommodation is the brainchild of Gerth Poulsen, founder of local tour outfitter Inuk Travel . He collaborated with Nuuk accommodation Inuk Hostels to build a picturesque glass igloo near the shore of this waterfront property.

“It’s always been our dream to start something where [travelers] can enjoy the northern lights from the hostel cabins; the area’s perfect for it,” Poulsen told me. The glass igloo, which welcomed its first visitors in May 2022, couldn’t come at a better time.

Getting to Nuuk: New Travel Options

Travel to Greenland’s colorful capital just got easier — and improved access will only continue in the coming years. In fall of 2022, Air Greenland and Icelandair unveiled a partnership to increase connectivity between the two islands. Iceland’s Greenland-bound flights now travel through Keflavik International Airport, not Reykjavik Airport, making the far-flung island more accessible for travelers coming from Europe and North America.

In 2024, reaching the capital will become even smoother when Nuuk opens its long-awaited new international airport , which is anticipated to significantly boost tourism. Inuk Hostels, and its new glass igloo, stand ready to welcome travelers with a unique Greenland experience.

Inside the Igloo

I’ve booked overnights in bubble hotels to chase the auroras , but this one-bed igloo goes leaps and bounds beyond that. It’s not glamping; It’s an Arctic tiny home, with just about everything you’d need in one small space, including a kitchenette, stove, toilet, heating and cooling features, and drop-down tables for breakfast in bed. (And yes, Inuk Hostels offers igloo guests breakfast in bed.) The charming abode also boasts 180-degree glass windows perfect for spotting the northern lights or, when the winter weather hits like it did for me, watching snowflakes and icebergs from the warmth of bed.

In addition to coziness inside the igloo, you’ll find numerous ways to stay toasty in the igloo’s adjacent amenities. There’s the traditional sauna, with a small window overlooking the water. Alternatively, you can warm up in your igloo’s private wood-fired hot tub.

The main lodge at Inuk Hostels, a short walk from the igloo, serves traditional Greenlandic fare like a reindeer or musk-ox burger, or lighter bites like salads and soups. Local Qajaq beer, made in southern Greenland, is also on the menu, as are cocktails, smoothies, coffee drinks, and wine.

For more of a cultural encounter, “Inuk Hostels offers Greenlandic traditional barbecue with storytelling about our ancestors,” said Poulsen, noting the tales include both historical and contemporary traditions.

Beyond the Igloo

While it’s tough to leave the warmth of your quaint igloo, it’s worth it. Nuuk brims with outdoor adventure and culture. Poulsen’s Inuk Travel team runs a host of experiences for hostel guests, such as paddleboarding in the summer or skiing in the winter.

Other excursions not to miss in Nuuk: backcountry snowshoeing hikes with local adventure outfitter Two Ravens ; a trip to the Greenland National Museum for an explainer on the island’s history and culture; and a walk along the Nuuk boardwalk, which wraps around the coast.

If auroras top your bucket list, book a night on the water with Nuuk Water Taxi . The local team takes small groups deep into the Nuuk fjord, well away from light pollution, for three hours of northern lights hunting — the perfect start to a full night of aurora scouting from your igloo's bed.

When to Visit Nuuk

With the recent boost in flights, Nuuk increasingly draws travelers year-round. Travel here in winter for a snowshoe or ski adventure, then watch auroras (visible from late fall through spring), and wake up in a snow globe.

Alternatively, Nuuk summers showcase Greenland’s milder side, with temperatures hovering between 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Adventures on the warm-weather docket include paddleboarding, kayaking, backcountry hikes, and late-night adventures beneath the midnight sun. And fear not: the igloo’s black-out curtains ensure a long, restful sleep all year.

There are very few cities in the world where you can access pristine backcountry wilderness within 5 minutes of the city center.

Welcome to Nuuk ! Greenland’s small but dynamic capital.

The center of Nuuk, Greenland - taken on a city tour at dusk. Pink skies and the mountain - Store Malene - in the background - Guide to Greenland

With a population of just under 18,500 people (2019), Nuuk is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. But don’t let that put you off! Along with abundant outdoor adventure opportunities, this modern city is a culture-lovers paradise with a thriving music and arts scene, outstanding gastronomy experiences, and fascinating museums (both indoor and open-air) that tell the story of Greenland’s history starting from its Inuit origins.

This  Ultimate Travel Guide to Nuuk  contains all the information you need to plan and get the most out of your visit to Nuuk – the northernmost capital city in the world.

Where is Nuuk?

“Nuuk” is the Greenlandic word for “cape” and is named for its position at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord (otherwise known as the Nuuk Fjord) – the second-largest fjord system in the world.  It is located on the southwest coast of Greenland about 240km south of the Arctic Circle and a little further north than Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Surrounded by water and several impressive mountains, the city boasts many picture-perfect viewpoints for those who do not have the time or energy to head into the backcountry.  The dramatic Sermitsiaq mountain is a particular favorite – especially at sunset as the last of the sun’s rays illuminate the side facing towards Nuuk.

What is the best time to visit Nuuk?

Nuuk is a fantastic travel destination at any time of year.  The best time to visit really comes down to what you are looking to experience.

Winter and Spring in Nuuk

For those of you who are worried about how cold it will be to visit Nuuk during the winter, don’t be!

Although the temperature in Nuuk rarely makes it to positive figures and looks downright frigid, the low humidity means that it often feels far warmer than places like Copenhagen or Reykjavik, despite having lower temperatures.

  • Discover how to fly to Nuuk from Denmark and Iceland

You should think about visiting Nuuk during the Winter / Spring if you:

  • Want to experience the Northern Lights  – best months are from mid-September to mid-April
  • Enjoy  snow-based outdoor activities  such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing

There are also several festivals that run during the winter months in Nuuk.  Check their websites to see if they are running in any particular year:

  • January: Mitaartut – a Greenlandic tradition where disguised individuals go door to door “demanding” to be let in and receive gifts.  While it sounds like Halloween, it is actually much more impressive, as the idea is not to dress as a fictional character, but as the scariest and most unrecognizable creature possible!
  • March:  Nuuk Snow Festival  – where people carve sculptures of all shapes and sizes out of blocks of snow
  • March: Nuuk Multi Kulti  – a celebration of cultural diversity in Nuuk
  • May:  Maaji Nuan  (“Lovely May”) – a month-long initiative with loads of free or cheap sporting activities to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle

Summer and Fall / Autumn in Nuuk

For the rest of the year, temperatures in Nuuk can reach double (positive) figures but can also change very quickly.

There are a wide variety of activities available from Nuuk during the long days of summer, and you should consider visiting if you are interested in:

  • Exploring the Nuuk Fjord by boat
  • Hiking around Nuuk
  • Kayaking or stand up paddleboarding
  • Fishing in Nuuk fjord

Nuuk also has several key summer events including:

  • June 21 – Greenland National Day  celebrations with bonfires, choirs, and people in national dress
  • August/September:  Colourful Nuuk Marathon  – a very challenging city-based marathon
  • August/September:  Qooqqut Festival  – a small festival in the fjord that is family-friendly and a great outing with friends
  • September: Nuuk Food Festival  – a celebration of local produce
  • September/October:  Nuuk Nordisk Festival  – a week-long extravaganza of art and culture from across the Nordic region that is held every second year in Nuuk
  • October: Akisuanerit Festival  – a weekend music festival featuring both Greenlandic and international artists

What should I pack for a visit to Nuuk?

As you can imagine, what to pack for your trip depends on what season you are visiting and what activities you are planning to do.

Layers are the key to success and offer the most flexibility given the changeable weather of the Arctic. At the very least, you’ll want to bring a medium-warm sweater, a warm jacket, and warm headgear. Yes, also in summer. The summer nights can be quite cold, and it has happened before that snow has fallen in July!

Regardless of when you plan to visit, you should always follow the layering principle with your clothing. All buildings are heated to a comfortable temperature, but when you are out and about you need to be prepared.

Read our full article on the best clothing to pack for a trip to arctic Greenland , or watch the video versions here.

In all seasons, make sure you bring sunscreen. The sun can be very strong in the Summer and even in Winter it is easy to get sunburned when you spend the whole day outside enjoying nature. If you are visiting during Summer, it is also a very good idea to bring insect repellent and a head net – or buy them once you arrive.

  • Everything you wanted to know about Greenland mosquitoes

If you forget something

If you do forget something or discover that you have not brought sufficient layers, Nuuk has several shops that sell quality outdoor clothing. There are also stores (e.g. Ittu Net , Pikkori Sport, Nukka Greenland) that sell or hire more specialized outdoor equipment (tents, skis, snowshoes, bikes, etc), so you do not need to bring everything to Greenland with you.

In addition to your travel clothes, you may also like to pack a more stylish outfit given the large number of restaurants and the opportunity to take in cultural shows in the city. Alternatively, you could add to your wardrobe by purchasing an item from a Greenlandic designer at one of the many boutiques in the city. BTW during winter or on rainy days, it is perfectly normal to bring indoor shoes with you to a restaurant to change into once you arrive.

Electronics

Greenland uses the Standard European Plug (230 V) for its electrical outlets so make sure you pack at least one of these if your electronics come from elsewhere in the world.

inuk travel nuuk

Don’t forget your camera! Nuuk is spectacularly beautiful so you will regret it if you do! Also, if you are planning to photograph the Northern Lights, you will want to bring your own sturdy tripod if you have one.

Useful Apps

The Colourful Nuuk App (Android, iOS) is an offline overview of Nuuk in your pocket, with up-to-date listings of cafes and restaurants, the best places to shop, and upcoming events.

inuk travel nuuk

We are big fans of Maps.Me app here at Guide to Greenland. Download the app and the map of Greenland while you still have internet access (the internet is not available everywhere and is very expensive in Greenland), and you’ll be set to find your way around during your stay.

The app shows streets, places of interest, restaurants, accommodations, and even some hiking trails. It can also tell you the best way to walk, drive or cycle from where you are to where you want to go – just remember to turn on your GPS when you arrive!

If you want to know the most likely times to see the Northern Lights, download the  Northern Light Aurora Forecast  ( iOS / Android ) app to monitor the likelihood of the lights appearing and, if you want to photograph them with your phone – one of the Northern Lights photography apps that allow you to set long exposure times.

How do I get to Nuuk?

Nuuk would have to be one of – if not the – most remote and isolated capital cities in the world.  All roads stop only a few kilometers from town so arriving there is necessarily done by either plane or boat.

International flights to Nuuk

You can fly to Nuuk from either Iceland or Denmark.

Flights from Iceland are direct and can be booked with either  Air Greenland  (out of Keflavik International Airport) or  Air Iceland Connect  (Reykjavik Domestic Airport). Flights from Denmark are operated by  Air Greenland  and arrive at Nuuk via Kangerlussuaq.

In all cases, departures vary depending on the time of year, so best to check the schedule on our  how to get to Greenland page  to see which days each airline flies.

Domestic flights to Nuuk

If you are already planning to be in Greenland and want to add Nuuk to your itinerary,  Air Greenland  has flights to Nuuk from several towns including  Ilulissat ,  Sisimiut ,  Kangerlussuaq ,  Maniitsoq , Paamiut,  Narsarsuaq , and  Kulusuk . Not all towns have daily flights, so check the schedules at  Air Greenland  to figure out when you can fly.

  • Book your flight to Nuuk

Arriving by boat to Nuuk

If you are taking a cruise to Greenland, Nuuk is more than likely on your schedule. Although cruise ships typically dock for only 6-12 hours, if Nuuk is the first or last stop on your voyage it is worthwhile taking a few extra days to explore the capital and its surroundings.

If you are coming from elsewhere in West or South Greenland, there is a sea-bound alternative to flying. The  Sarfaq Ittuk Ferry , operated by the Arctic Umiaq Line, docks in Nuuk twice per week as it shuttles passengers between  Qaqortoq  in the South and  Ilulissat  in the North. The exact schedule depends on the time of year, so check their  schedule  to plan your itinerary.

How do I get around Nuuk?

Once you have arrived in Nuuk, it is very easy to get around independently.

Walking around Nuuk

The city is sufficiently small that is possible to walk the entire town. While the center of Nuuk is reasonably flat, once you venture outside of the main downtown area, you’ll soon discover that Nuuk is quite hilly!

You can follow the roads (cars generally do give way to pedestrians!) but even better is to choose your own adventure through the colorful houses and apartment buildings that contribute to the moniker “Colourful Nuuk”.  If you choose this option, be prepared for a good stair workout! Also, be careful of icy patches if there is snow.

Biking around Nuuk

If you are visiting during the warmer months, hiring a bike gives you an alternative way to explore the surroundings… well, as far as the roads go anyway.

Nuuk’s Buses

You can get almost anywhere in Nuuk on its modern bus system –  Nuup Bussii  – and it is surprisingly cheap!

You can purchase a single ticket on board using cash or, if you are going to be in town for longer, a voucher from one of the kiosks around town. Details in English can be found on the website, and timetables are published online and at each bus stop.

Passengers getting on a bus at a bus stop in Nuuk during winter - Greenland

Nuuk has several taxi companies and, as one might expect, they are the most expensive way to get around town. However, if you need to catch a flight or be somewhere at a specific time, they are the most convenient. Beware of peak periods around 8 am and 18 pm, when you may have to wait for some time.

Nuuk is one of a handful of places in Greenland where it is possible to rent a car. If you are in town on business or need to move around the city a lot, renting a car is definitely worthwhile.

Water-based Taxis

If you want to explore further than the road extends, you will need to go via water-based taxis. There are several different types of the boat (open, cabins for 6, cabins for 12), and several providers to choose from.  All of them offer  tours of the Nuuk Fjord, or charters  if you would prefer to create your own itinerary.

Things to do in Nuuk

Nuuk is a unique capital city in that you can be enjoying a cultural activity one minute, and exploring the backcountry 5 minutes later. Despite its small size, there is no shortage of things to do, and you will have no trouble at all finding activities to suit your interests for several days. Here are some suggestions:

Explore the city

Guided city tours are a great way to get your bearings when you arrive and to learn a little about the history and development of Nuuk. Explore the center on foot, join a driving tour that will also introduce you to different suburbs, or head out on a photo tour with a professional photographer if you want to take the best images possible.

Cultural experiences

The  Greenland National Museum and Archives  provides an in-depth look at the cultural history of Greenland starting from 4,500 years ago, and the  Nuuk Local Museum  offers a glimpse into the past of Greenland’s relatively young capital.

The  Nuuk Art Museum  has both permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as an extensive collection of carvings from all over Greenland. You can also download and follow their  Nuuk Art Walk , which guides you past 19 different art installations around the city.

Make sure you call in at  Katuaq  – Nuuk’s cultural center – to check for performance. If not, there is always the option to take in a movie at Nuuk’s large cinema (most movies are shown in original language).

Shopping & and a scenic helicopter flight

Don’t forget the shopping! In the Colonial Harbour, the main pedestrian mall of Nuuk (Imaneq), and Tuapannguit (the street that lies between the mall and the Harbour along the ridge), you will find souvenir shops and a number of boutiques, some of which stock Greenlandic designers.

Take time and visit Inuit Artist workshop -Ajagaq , there you can see how different souvenirs are made and also purchase them directly from the artist (there is no option to pay by card so bring cash).

The best selection of books about Greenland can be found at  Atuagkat bookstore  (change the language option at the top), and  Atlantic Music Shop  is the place for Greenlandic music (the best music you’ve never heard of).

Finally, get a bird’s eye view of Nuuk with a  scenic flight  over the area. You can even make it more adventurous by landing on one of the tallest peaks!

Explore the Nuuk Fjord

Venturing up the world’s second-biggest fjord system is the “must do” activity. Depending on your specific interests, there is a wide range of tours available.

A general fjord tour is all about enjoying the scenery and typically includes Sermitsiaq mountain’s impressive waterfall. On full-day excursions, you can also visit the Narsap Sermia glacier at the end of the fjord.

If you enjoy  fishing , there are options to tailor your fjord excursion around this activity. Or, if you prefer to eat – look for the experiences where any fish you catch are cooked for you by the professional chefs at Qooqqut Nuan up in the fjord!

Alternatively, you could choose a tour to explore one of Nuuk Fjord’s abandoned settlements at Qoornoq or Kangeq, or experience daily life in a small, remote settlement at Kapisillit.

Witness the Northern Lights

If you visit Nuuk between September and April, you have a great chance to see the incredible Northern Lights. Although they are often visible from the center of Nuuk (the advantage of being in a small city), they are even better if you head to the  outskirts of town, take a Northern Lights cruise , or spend at least one night further up in the Nuuk Fjord.

Make sure you bring warm clothes and sign up for the  photography tour  if you want to learn how to capture the best images from a professional photographer. You can also read our  Guide to the Northern Lights in Greenland .

Outdoor Adventure

While fjord tours offer a relaxed and gentle way to experience the natural beauty of the Nuuk area, if you would prefer to do so in a more active way, there are plenty of other options.  In particular, the two mountains that border Nuuk – Lille Malene (Quassussuaq) and Store Malene (Ukkusissat) – offer easily accessible outdoor adventure opportunities.

Winter and Spring

If you are visiting during  Winter and Spring , the small ski resort  Sisorarfiit – Nuuk  is located just on the outskirts of town and offers two decent runs for experienced skiers (the longest being around 800m) and 3 lifts.  The snow is almost always powder or hard-packed (very rarely slushy) and the views are stunning!

Alpine ski runs at Sisorarfiit - Nuuk's ski resort in Greenland

If cross-country skiing is more your thing, join one of the trails that run from in town to the outskirts.  You’ll likely find kids on skis or sleds, and people walking dogs mingling with more serious skiers, some of which are Olympic class.  During the season, the trails are groomed daily and offer views of the colorful suburban houses as well as breathtaking vistas of the fjord and Sermitsiaq mountain.

If you want to do a multi-day ski trip, you should look to bring your own gear. For single-day use, you can hire snowboards and both downhill and cross-country skis from Sisorarfiit-Nuuk.

Snowshoeing to the top of Lille Malene is another amazing experience, giving you a decent workout and a bird’s eye view of the Nuuk area. There are several  snowshoeing tours  available and no prior experience is required.

Summer and Fall / Autumn

During the  Summer and Fall / Autumn  months, replace the snowshoes with hiking boots for short hikes along the fjord or  guided day hikes to nearby mountains .

For experienced trekkers that are self-sufficient and want to explore the Nuuk fjord on foot, pick up a copy of “Trekking Around Nuuk” at  Atuagkat bookstore . If you want to do many of these hikes,  you will need to  hire a private boat charter  to take you to where you want to go and pick you up again.

For those who prefer to be out on the water, you can go  kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding  (SUP) near Nuuk.

Nuuk – The Ultimate Guide to Greenland’s Capital with Top Tips

Lisa Germany image

Professional photographer and writer who loves to explore remote and unusual places

Welcome to our Nuuk travel guide. Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland and both the cultural and administrative centre for the country. The name of the town means “Cape” in the Greenlandic language due to its location near the outlet for the enormous Nuup Kangerlua Fjord – the world’s second-largest fjord system.

An Introduction To Nuuk

The city of Nuuk (formerly “Godthåb” or “Good Hope”) was founded in 1728 when the missionary Hans Egede moved his colony from its original location at the mouth of fjord to the current site. His home was built in that same year and still stands in Nuuk’s Colonial Harbour where it was first constructed. It is the oldest house in the country and is now used mostly for official functions.

Although it is not as well known as Ilulissat for tourism, Nuuk has a wide range of experiences for guests. Adventure through the raw nature and tall mountains of the Nuuk Fjord, visit small settlements (both functioning and now abandoned) for a glimpse of how life used to be before the 1960s, experience the incredible talent of Greenland’s musicians, artists and actors, and enjoy some of the finest fusion food in the country.  If you have the time, it is definitely worth spending a few days here before your cruise for a view of where Greenland is heading and to acquaint yourself with the nation’s history and culture.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to plan your visit to Nuuk including arrivals information, where to stay, places to eat and things to see and do, all based on our experience.

Nuuk capital of Greenland

How to Get to Nuuk

  • If you are not coming on an organised cruise, the only way to get to Nuuk is to fly from either Copenhagen (Denmark) or Reykjavik (Iceland). There are no flights from North America or elsewhere in Europe at this stage, and no international ferries.
  • Flights from Copenhagen transit through Kangerlussuaq (the primary international airport for Greenland), while flights from Reykjavik are usually direct.

Nuuk Flights

Nuuk is serviced by two airlines. Air Greenland flies to Nuuk from Copenhagen (via Kangerlussuaq) and from Keflavik International airport near Reykjavik (direct) all year round. Icelandair also fly directly to Nuuk throughout the year from Reykjavik Domestic Airport.  No matter where in the world you are coming from, you must first get yourself to either Copenhagen or Reykjavik and fly from there.

The weight limit on all flights to Greenland is 20kg. This is usually strictly enforced and excess baggage is expensive so we encourage you to stay under this limit.

It is not uncommon for flights to, from and within Greenland to be delayed due to weather. At the very least, give yourself one extra day in either Copenhagen or Reykjavik before your onward international flight. We also recommend you take out travel insurance that will cover these types of delays.

Fore more information please see our comprehensive How to Get to Greenland Guide.

Nuuk Arrival information

Once you arrive at Nuuk international airport, you have a few options to get into town. Your accommodation provider may include an airport transfer in the price of your room, but if not – the easiest and fastest way is to take a taxi (~150DKK one way). A cheaper alternative is to wait for the #3 bus that stops at the airport (bus stop = Nuuk Lufthavn). It costs about 16DKK for the trip into town and you can pay with cash on the bus. Or, if you don’t have much luggage and are keen to stretch your legs, it is a ~5km walk.

Nuuk Cruises

Here at Secret Atlas, we offer Expedition Micro Cruises to explore Greenland with just 12 guets per departure. We think it is the best way to experience this part of Greenland in a personal and low impact way.

Our Expedition Micro Cruises from Nuuk launch in 2025. Please join our Explorers Club Newsletter to be informed when our first Nuuk cruises are announced.

If you would like to explore Scoresby Sund in East Greenland in 2024 you can check out our East Greenland Explorer Micro Cruise.

Where to stay in Nuuk

As the commercial and government centre of Greenland, Nuuk has several different accommodation options to choose from including 4-star hotels, guesthouses and hostels. You can even arrange to stay with a Greenlandic family !

Hotel Hans Egede Express

A more budget hotel option with several room options (including family rooms) and a small cafe in the foyer. This is the newest hotel in town.

Nuuk Seamen’s Home

A 3-star hotel near the main harbour that offers conference facilities and several room types, including “Bed and Breakfast” rooms. The cafeteria is well priced and popular amongst locals and visitors alike, and all profits go to supporting the local community – particularly the fishermen and seafarers in Greenland.

Inuk Hostel

With arguably the best view in all of Nuuk, Inuk hostel offers cabin-style accommodation in the most incredible setting. It is located ~2km from the centre of the city and has one of Nuuk’s most popular cafes on site, though each cabin also incorporates a small kitchenette

Apartment accommodation

If you would prefer to have more space and the option of cooking for yourself, there are several apartment accommodation options within walking distance of the centre of Nuuk. Besides the Nuuk Hotel Apartments offered by Hotel Hans Egede, have a look at Hotel Nordbo , Sydbo Apartments , and Kang  Apartments if you are interested in this style of accommodation.

Hostel/Guesthouse accommodation

Nuuk also has several different hostel options. These all offer private rooms with shared bathrooms, a shared kitchen, and a shared common room. A few also offer dormitory-style rooms. The current list includes: The Blue Guesthouse , Kulukis Downtown Hostel , Nuuk City Hostel , Hostel Vandrehuset , and Eagle View Hostel .

Where to eat and drink in Nuuk

The capital of Greenland is a gastronomic delight, with a surprisingly wide variety of foodie options. Most establishments look to incorporate Greenlandic produce wherever possible so don’t be surprised to find whale, seal, reindeer and musk-ox on the menu!

The Hotel Hans Egede hosts Nuuk’s premiere restaurant – the Sarfalik Winebar and Brasserie , as well as A Hereford Beefstouw for lovers of high-quality meats. The stylish Skyline Bar is a true piano bar with a pianist every evening.

Other restaurants include the cafeteria at Nuuk Seamen’s home, which offers hearty, home-style food that is very reasonable priced and popular with the locals, Charoen Porn for wonderful Thai dishes, Tapasimut for small tapas plates, wine and cocktails, Aurum for sushi, Killut for cocktails and a variety of restaurant/cafe food with a Greenlandic twist, and Unicorn (winter only) which specialises in steak and seafood.

Nuuk also has a plethora of cafes that serve everything from Greenlandic specialties to asian dishes. Most of them also offer an extensive weekend brunch menu, which is well worth attending alongside half of Nuuk’s locals. The brunches are extremely popular!

You won’t be able to miss Cafétuaq which is located in the foyer of the impressive Katuaq Cultural Centre in downtown Nuuk. Nor can you fail to notice the cosy seating of Café Pascucci , with its large windows looking out onto the main pedestrian thoroughfare.

You can find Café Toqqorfik in the Colonial Harbour with front-row views of the fjord and board games for guests, and Café Esmeralda is another bright, cosy option with great food and coffee. Café Inuk has possibly the best view of all the cafes in Nuuk, and although it is located outside of the main city centre, the trip is worth the effort!

For those that are watching their health, the Tasty Juice and Sandwich Bar (hidden away behind Qiviut in the centre of Nuuk) offers sandwiches, juices, smoothies and superbowls, and for those who are craving melted cheese – Iggu is the place to sit down and have a great pizza. Bones is an American-style diner in the Nuuk Centre for a casual meal.

Nuuk also has you covered if you are after a relatively cheap fast-food meal.  You can pick up Asian style fast food at Cafe Wok , Niini’s or Sawadii , pizza and other fast food at Hong Kong Pizzaria or Café Mamaq in the Nuuk Centre, or enjoy the daily menu at Café Tamu out in the suburb of Qinngorput.

Finally, if you are looking for the pub – head to either Daddy’s , Kristinemut/Mutten (which also features live music on Fridays and Saturdays), or Pub Nuan out in the suburb of Nuussuaq.

One last alternative – make your own picnic! Stop by either the Brugseni or Pisiffik supermarkets to pick up bakery items or even cooked items from the deli, and head down to the Colonial Harbour or other favourite viewpoint around Nuuk.

What to see in Nuuk

Colonial harbour.

As the name suggests, the Colonial Harbour is the oldest part of Nuuk. It is the departure point for many of the summer boat tours and incorporates several museums and a cafe amidst its colourful and historically important houses. Grab a coffee and sit at one of the picnic tables that line the waterfront, or chill out on Nuuk’s small beach with the locals on a sunny day. Then head back to the city or your accommodation by strolling along the extensive wooden boardwalk that starts/ends in the harbour.

Greenland National Museum and Archives

The most comprehensive museum in Greenland with exhibitions that take you through the island’s history and culture from prehistoric times to modern day. If you want an historical and cultural context to your exploration of Greenland, this is a must-visit.

Entry price: 30DKK

Nuuk Art Museum

The Nuuk Art Museum was a gift to the people of Nuuk from Svend and Helene Junge Pedersen. Items from their collection of historical artworks now sit alongside more recent works from contemporary artists to form a permanent exhibition that encompasses Greenlandic art through the years. This permanent collection is augmented by temporary exhibitions and also a self-guided audio Art Walk that directs you past and explains a little about 20 sculptures located in downtown Nuuk.

Entry price:  30DKK (free on Thursdays)

Nuuk Local Museum

Nuutoqaq is a smaller museum that focuses on the history and stories of the local area. It is also one of the key art exhibition spaces in Nuuk featuring several temporary exhibitions each year. It is a wonderful place to find many beautiful craft pieces from local artisans, so you should definitely call in if you are shopping for souvenirs.

Entry price:  20DKK

Katuaq Cultural Centre

The stunning architecture of Katuaq was designed to reflect the rippling motion of the Northern Lights – a key feature of the night sky during winters in Greenland. This amazing building is home to a cafe, temporary art exhibitions, Nuuk’s cinema (movies shown in original language), and is also a key performance centre for the city.

If there are Greenlandic musicians scheduled to perform during your stay – you should absolutely grab a ticket! It is some of the best music you’ve never heard of.

Malik – Nuuk’s award-winning swimming pool

Malik is the Greenlandic word for “wave” and one look at its exterior design (which has won international architectural awards) will indicate how it got its name. It is a wonderful place to chill out with a main swimming pool, a smaller pool with warmer water, hot tubs, sauna and a cafe.

Casual entry price:  50DKK

Activities In and Around Nuuk

The Nuuk Fjord is the second-biggest fjord system in the world with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore by boat. Although we will venture into the fjord on our cruise, you might like to spend more time getting to know this vast waterway which hides gems such as:

  • Kapisillit – the only still-functioning small settlement near Nuuk and the gateway to the Nuuk Icefjord
  • Qoornoq – a once thriving fishing community that was abandoned in the 1960s due to government policies. Many of the houses have been restored and are now summer getaways for the families of the inhabitants that were relocated to Nuuk
  • Kangeq – another small settlement that was abandoned in the 1960s and which has mostly been left to decay
  • Qooqqut – an old sheep farm, now a very popular day trip for those wanting to chill out in the fjord and eat world-class food at the fabulous Qooqqut Nuan restaurant (only open during Summer)

Stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking

There’s nothing quite like being out on the water under your own steam. Stand-up paddleboarding is huge in Nuuk, with opportunities that range from introductory paddles in the Colonial Harbour close to the city, through to weaving your way amidst the icebergs in the Nuuk Icefjord or sharing the silence and solitude with visiting Humpback whales. There are also kayaking tours that allow you to explore the low-lying Akia (Nordlandet) landscape across the fjord from Nuuk.

Quassussuaq (Lille Malene) and Ukkusissat (Store Malene) are the two large mountains that rise directly from the suburbs of Nuuk.  For day hikers, there are marked trails that will take you around Quassussuaq (via the picturesque Flower Valley) or to its summit with wonderful views of Sermitsiaq Mountain and the city of Nuuk.

There is also a marked trail to the summit of Ukkusissat, which offers incredible views over Nuuk and also Kobbefjord (the next fjord to the South). This route is much more challenging and involves a bit of scrambling near edges, so is not recommended for those that don’t like heights.

Scenic flights

The best way to get an overview of the full extent of the spectacular raw beauty of the Nuuk Fjord is to take a scenic flight over the area. There are several options available including a twilight flight, and one that lands near the top of the iconic Sermitsiaq mountain so that you can take your time to enjoy the birds-eye view.

Greenlanders love to fish! And catching fish in Greenland is incredibly easy! Cod and Redfish are the two most common catches in the Nuuk Fjord and several operators offer you the chance to try your hand at spool fishing. The most popular trips include a visit to Qooqqut where your catch is cooked for you by the amazing chefs at Qooqqut Nuan restaurant.

Traveling around Nuuk

If you enjoy walking, it is possible to get everywhere you need to go in Nuuk by foot. Even the far-flung suburb of Qinngorput is doable if you are super-keen. Fortunately, the main tourist attractions are clustered near the centre, so most visitors only use transportation to get to the airport, Inuk Hostels/Café Inuk or perhaps the Tidewater stairs at the main port.  The easiest way to reach these places is with a taxi, though Nuuk’s comprehensive (but relatively easy to understand) bus system will also drop you somewhere nearby.

Events in Nuuk

Nuuk is the cultural capital of Greenland with many different events scheduled throughout the year. While there is always something happening in the city, the largest and most regular festivals are:

Nuuk Snow Festival – March

Local and international teams compete over 3 days to create the most impressive snow sculptures from 3m x 3x blocks of compacted snow.

Nuuk Marathon – August

One of the toughest city-based marathons in the world and quite unique in that you have spectacular views of fjords and mountains as you run around a metropolitan area.

Qooqqut Festival – August

A family-friendly weekend festival with music and activities at an old sheep-farm-turned-gourmet-escape in the Nuuk fjord.

Nuuk Nordisk Festival – October

Held every second year, this week-long festival brings creative artists from all Nordic countries together to showcase their talents in Nuuk.

A kisuaneit Music Festival – October

One of the largest music festivals in Greenland. It features Greenlandic and International artists and is held over 3 days. If you are not familiar with Greenlandic music – you should definitely try to catch a live performance while you are in the country. Greenland has a lot of incredible musicians

Nuuk: Your questions answered

Can i see the northern lights in nuuk.

Yes, you can see the northern lights in Nuuk – including from the centre of the city!  Watching them dance across the sky is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but remember, you can only see them when it is dark. While the Sun does dip below the horizon in Nuuk during the Summer, it never actually gets dark enough to see the lights until around the end of August.

If you would like to see the Northern Lights check out our Northern Lights Cruises in Greenland.

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Nuuk?

The northern lights can be seen in Nuuk whenever it is dark.  This means you can potentially see them any time from August through to May, however, the best time of year is February – April.

If you would like to learn more about how to see the Northern Lights in Greenland please check out our guide.

What is the temperature in Nuuk?

Over the course of the year, the temperature in Nuuk ranges from about -10 degrees to +15 degrees Celsius. During cruising season, you can expect daytime temperatures of 15-20 degrees dropping to about 3 degrees during the evening – much milder than you were probably imagining! On a sunny day with no breeze – the strong Arctic sun can feel much, much hotter, so make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from sunburn!

When can I see the midnight sun in Nuuk?

Nuuk is a little too far south (it lies below the Arctic Circle) to see the midnight sun.  Even at the height of Summer, the Sun dips below the horizon. That said, it never gets completely dark in Nuuk during the Summer and you can enjoy a perpetual twilight with beautiful colours.

What is the currency in Nuuk?

Nuuk and all of Greenland uses the Danish Krone as its currency. If you wish to use cash, you should either bring it with you or withdraw it from the ATMs in Nuuk (found at the banks or near/in supermarkets). Exchanging currency can only be done at the bank and only during certain times. Most places (but not all!) also accept Visa, Mastercard or Dankort (Eurocard, Diners and American Express less so). [

Does Nuuk have a post office?

Yes, there is a post office in Nuuk where it is possible to post postcards and packages home. Look for the Telepost building at the top of the pedestrian mall.

Where do cruises depart from in Nuuk?

During Summer, cruises may depart from either the Colonial Harbour near the centre of Nuuk, or from the Tidewater stairs in the main Nuuk port.  Make sure you ask which one you are departing from.
