Bluestone, Beckley Travel Plazas getting $122 million revamp; driver weighs in

Bluestone, Beckley Travel Plazas getting $122 million revamp, driver weighs in. (WCHS)

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Construction for the Bluestone and Beckley travel plazas along the West Virginia Turnpike is moving along.

The $122 million project will offer travelers food, electric vehicle charging stations, outdoor dining, expanded parking and more.

"At first you couldn't see any progress, now you see a good amount," tractor-trailer driver Steve Petracca said.

Petracca said the construction of the two new plazas means two less sites for him to stop to rest when travelling through the area.

"There's so many trucks now that it's really hard to find a good spot," Petracca said. "I don't like parking on the side of the road, on the off ramps and on ramps. I don't like doing that. So, you gotta shut down pretty early to even get a spot."

The West Virginia Department of Transportation said the Bluestone Travel Plaza closed at 7 a.m. on Monday to allow for the completion of the new travel plaza, and diesel fueling stations and parking will close at the Beckley Travel Plaza on Aug. 1.

Jeff Miller, executive director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority, commented on the closures' impact on drivers in a news release .

“This will certainly have an impact on diesel fuel customers at Beckley and those commercial truck drivers who use the site for overnight parking,” Miller said. “We recognize that, and want to assure the traveling public that when these sites are completed and reopened they will be able to enjoy world-class facilities, with expanded offerings over the previous facilities.”

Petracca said he is excited for the plazas to be finished.

"When they get these things going it will take a lot off the roads. So, that'll help out," he said.

According to WVDOT, construction is estimated to be complete by the end of the year.

Major renovations begin at Bluestone, Beckley travel plazas

Feb. 2—CAMP CREEK — A major project to completely renovate the Bluestone Travel Plaza and the Beckley Travel Plaza along the West Virginia Turnpike got underway Wednesday.

Food, restroom and parking facilities will remain available during renovations, state officials said. Tamarack Marketplace, located next to the Beckley travel plaza, will also remain open during construction with expanded services for travelers.

"We're fortunate at the Beckley travel plaza off Exit 45 that we do have Tamarack Marketplace located right there," said Jeff Miller, executive director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority. "They have a full-service restaurant, restrooms, retail, and grab-n-go area."

Miller said that beginning Saturday, April 1, the hours of the Tamarack Marketplace, located next door to the Beckley travel plaza, will expand. The facility will open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., a change from six days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Restroom renovations at the Tamarack Marketplace will be completed in a few weeks. The Tamarack Marketplace will also open 'Country Roads Market.' The addition is aimed at supplementing the needs of interstate travelers with convenience store offerings such as food, drinks and car items.

In November 2022, Gov. Jim Justice announced the renovation plans after the West Virginia Parkways Authority officially approved them. Plans were based on results of a 2021 survey of Turnpike travelers.

The Bluestone and Beckley travel plazas will be rebuilt from the ground up in a new, more user-friendly style, state officials said. The newly redeveloped travel plazas will offer expanded food concepts, a 24/7 Mountain State Market convenience store, outdoor dining options, expanded parking for tractor trailers and passenger vehicles, EV charging stations, separated vehicle and tractor trailer fueling options, picnic area, and pet relief areas. The Beckley Travel Plaza will offer a drive through, increased restroom facilities, and bus parking as well as enhancing and highlighting the Parkways Authority Tourist Information Centers.

Work is expected to be completed by late 2024.

Miller said tractor-trailer drivers will not have to look for alternative locations from Beckley and Bluestone in Mercer County for meeting, switching equipment and fueling.

"The fueling operations, which do contain restrooms and sell snacks and beverages, will remain almost through the entirety of the project," Miller said. "We will be able to keep all of the parking open which is highly utilized for tractor-trailer parking."

Diesel fueling and truck parking will also close at the Beckley Travel Plaza on Thursday, August 1, 2024, until the completion of construction.

Officials plan to add 10 truck parking spaces to the Bluestone Travel Plaza, bringing the total number of truck parking spaces to 79. Thirty-five truck parking spaces will be added to the Beckley facility, bringing the total number of truck parking spaces to 165.

The rebuilt travel plazas will also include “expanded food concepts, a 24/7 Mountain State Market convenience store, outdoor dining options, EV charging stations, separated vehicle and tractor-trailer fueling options, picnic area, and pet relief areas.”

Parkways Authority: Turnpike travel plazas could be done by Thanksgiving travel period

BECKLEY, W.Va. — West Virginia Turnpike travel plazas at Beckley and Bluestone are on pace to be completed by the end of this year.

Members of the West Virginia Parkways Authority got an up close look at the work on the Beckley site near Tamarack Monday as part of the authority’s monthly meeting.

beckley travel plaza west virginia

“You’re starting to see things really take shape,” Parkways Authority Executive Director Jeff Miller told MetroNews. “They’re working on the interior of the facilities now and the canopies, which I think will become iconic for both.”

Demolition of the old travel plaza buildings began last spring. Paramount Builders, a St. Albans-based contractor, is being paid $122.8 million to rebuild the facilities. Work is anticipated to begin on the Morton Travel Plaza in Kanawha County next spring.

Miller said the work at Bluestone in Mercer County is a little ahead of the Beckley site but he’s hopeful both will be completed by the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

“What people are going to find is a very well-lit area, beautiful landscaping, a nice facility with great amenities for the traveling public,” Miller said. “It will be a nice place for families and commercial truck drivers to stop and feel like they are in a safe environment there.”

Miller previously told MetroNews the new travel plaza at Beckley will be the centerpiece. Once finished it will have several restaurant choices including Wendy’s, Starbucks, Popeyes, a 24-hour convenience-type store along with an outdoor dining options with a permanent food truck-looking structure.

Miller said Beckley will also have 50 additional parking spaces for tractor trailers and 16 electric vehicle charging stations.

There was initially a lot of site work at both sites including the replacing of fuel tanks and drainage work, Miller said.

“Before we could even really start building or reaching the point of any type of vertical construction, there was a whole lot of work that had to take place on the ground level,” he said.

Miller added the project hasn’t been hit with massive additional construction costs. He credits the builder’s initial bid.

“I think the contractor put in a very forthright bid on what they planned on doing and included all the contingencies on their part in the beginning,” Miller said.

Man all the food options are close beside Sbarro and Starbucks. It is almost like a rest area now with huge restrooms and a gift shop. There is a huge Exxon next to it. What happened to all the food options. Needs to get a chicken place or McDonald's in there. Next exit, 44 I think has better options.

Inside

I've randomly stopped at this travel plaza a number of times at this point. It's close to the middle point between Columbus, Ohio and Charlotte, NC and I tend to visit friends in NC from time to time. It's really easy to access from the interstate, there's a giant parking lot out front, and even outside seating to enjoy your food before heading back on the road. Once inside you'll find a Starbucks, a small convenient store, restrooms, and several food options. It's kept pretty clean and while I've only ordered from the Starbucks, the service was fast and friendly. They also have a lot of travel information and literature available if you happen to be staying in the area. If you're on the road and in need of a pit stop, don't hesitate to swing through the Beckley Travel Plaza. They'll have pretty much anything you might need to keep your road trip moving and grooving. Pro tip - If you have extra time take the one minute drive across the street to the Tamerack for local goods.

Update on 8/1/20: The rest of the restaurants and shops were open, so that was nice. Face masks required. Still wasn't very clean, though it was extremely busy! Only the Burger King & little mart were open (7/8/20). Bathrooms were not clean with toilet paper all over the floors. They should put on the road signs which of the restaurants are closed... most people in there were NOT happy campers to find out they were all closed. Most people wearing masks though! Not sure if it's required in WV or not, I'm just passing through

Needed a place to catch some shut eye after all day driving. This plaza had plenty of parking and the Burger King stays open 24hrs if you need some food. Wish they would put up water fountains and a water bottle filling station. It was very strange that a plaza of this size didn't have them. The nice lady at the Starbucks was very nice and provided water. This place was no frills but it provided exactly what I needed. Safe place to sleep and some grass to walk the pup.

This travel plaza located off I-77 and I-64 before the split has been a stopping point for our travels for many years. I remember when it was built and brand spanking new so I was a little disappointed that it seems sort of run down now. Most of the eatery area is empty and the one main place Burger King is too expensive and will not take coupons or discounts. There is a gift shop which is sort of expensive but hey this past trip we forgot our sweatshirts hoodies so I had to buy two of them...$52 for 2 but they are WV logo only down fall thin, too thin to keep me too warm but hey I needed them and they were there!!! I miss the restaurant options!!!

It's ok during the pandemic. I'm just skeeved out by peoples sketchy Covid procedures. Incorrect mask usage is pointless. Need more sanitizer units. Prepandemic, I actually liked stopping here. Only Burger King, sbarro ( limited menu) and Starbucks (thankfully) are open. The travel mart is the best part tho... any and every type of snack (healthy and unhealthy) are available. I love that they have fruit, boiled eggs, pickles etc

Photo of Jean K.

Not a bad stop on a long trip. There are plenty of stalls in the restroom. There was a huge floor fan blowing in both restrooms. I couldn't tell if it was for a spill or circulation. No sign of unusual activity in the parking area as noted by another reviewer but I was traveling with family. No mask requirement at the time of my visit in June but several people were being courteous and wearing masks. Overall, a decent stop to fuel up and take a break.

Photo of Karen G.

The travel plaza was dirty. None of the soap dispensers worked in the ladies' restroom. The food area leaves much to be desired. Starbucks workers seemed pretty clueless. Would not suggest stopping there if you can help it.

Be aware of your surroundings. I pulled in around 900 am on August 9, 2019 because it has such a great, family friendly atmosphere for a stop with my son on my drive from OH to SC. As I pulled in, my son told me a man was chasing a lady with a baby through the parking lot. I kept telling him I'm sure that's wasn't happening. He was adamant she was running from him. I thought he misunderstood something and said it was probably a daddy running to catch up with family. We went in the plaza to use the restrooms. A short time later we left the travel plaza to get back in our car. My son got in the car. I dug around in the back of the suv for awhile and finally went to get in the driver's seat. I barely was in the car and before I could shut the door a man was standing in the door of the driver's side. I have no idea where he came from. He talked about also being from the Carolinas like me, had car trouble etc. He didn't ask for money at all but I was getting worried I wouldn't be able to shut the door. I got a bad vibe. I tried to move fast and slam my door and lock it in one move. As soon as I did, he took off through the lot in the direction of the travel plaza. As I pulled out, my nine year old nonchalantly said, that's the man who was chasing the lady with the baby. I had forgotten about his mentioning the incident prior. I looked to see where he went. He was now heading back across the parking lot staring. I looked at where he was staring. He was heading straight for a woman leaning against the driver side door of her black Jeep parked off by herself. She was talking on a cell phone. I drove straight to her and he and I made eye contact as I approached. As I pulled up and warned her about him, he turned and walked away and started messing with his cell phone with his back to her. I sat in my car a few feet away watching him. I pulled out of there shaking. I called the police about 15 minutes later. Clearly the man had taken off because he wasn't visible on their cameras, but they said they'd send an officer over to check out the area . I really hope they took it seriously and checked their camera footage for the last hour. Don't let your guard down there. I've stopped here many times over the years and loved the stop. Be aware.

Photo of Patrick P.

I remember the travel plaza's in WV - I believe they were populated by Howard Johnson's Restaurants. I found this travel plaza pretty entertaining. They had a good variety of (3-4) restaurants and shops as well as a Starbucks. This hit all the key notes I needed. As far as travel plaza and truck stops go... This rated higher since it had more variety (more like a mini-mall) to address all your traveling needs. Clean, affordable, and fast :)

Bluestone and Beckley travel plaza to close for construction completion

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) - The Beckley and Bluestone travel plazas will be closed to complete construction.

The Bluestone Travel Plaza on the West Virginia Turnpike will close Monday, July 8 at 7 a.m. while diesel fueling stations and all truck parking will be closed at the Beckley Travel Plaza on Thursday, August 1 until completion of that project.

Fueling stations at the Bluestone Plaza are already offline, but it will be closed to truck parking until construction is complete at the end of the year.

“It’s necessary for the West Virginia Parkways Authority and general contractor, Paramount Builders, to fully close the Beckley and Bluestone travel plaza sites in order for the contractor to complete the site renovations in the areas that have remained open up to this point in the project,” said Jeff Miller, executive director of the Parkways Authority.

Miller also acknowledged that this would impact diesel customers and truck drivers, but said the closures are necessary.

The West Virginia Parkways Authority approved a contract with Paramount Builders LLC, of St. Albans for $122,820.381.53 in February 2023 for these projects which included the demolition and redevelopment of these sites.

The WVDOT said, “The newly redeveloped travel plazas will offer expanded food concepts, a 24/7 Mountain State Market convenience store, outdoor dining options, expanded parking for tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles, EV charging stations, separated vehicle and tractor-trailer fueling options, picnic area, and pet relief areas.”

Beckley’s location will also include a drive through, more restrooms, and bus parking.

More dollars down the road: Toll increases, credit cards coming to WV Turnpike

More in latest news:.

beckley travel plaza west virginia

By Beth Sergent, Charleston Gazette-Mail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Credit cards will be accepted at toll facilities along the West Virginia Turnpike next year — joining existing cash and E-ZPass payment options — all of which will be available to pay for another toll increase, also on the horizon for 2025.

The addition of credit cards, a toll increase, and an update on the Beckley and Bluestone travel plaza upgrades were discussed at Tuesday’s legislative interim meeting of the Joint Legislative Oversight Commission on Dept of Transportation Accountability.

Toll increases

Jeffrey A.
