What our customers say about us
Great service, worth the price
My friend and I wanted to do a short trek because we’re a bit out of shape so Ramesh suggested the Ghandruk loop and we were not disappointed. It was just the right amount of physical activity. The views were wonderful and the lodges clean and each of them offered good food and hot water. The villages were authentic and small. Our guide (Sabin) was amazing. He told us everything we asked about Nepal and the mountains and was very helpful when on the last day my friend got sick. He also had many recommendations for what to do in Pokhara. I definitely recommend this trekking agency.
Fantastic trip!
Went to Nepal for a few days on the way back to the UAE from India. Weren’t sure what to do as we only had a few days but we wanted to see a lot of different areas. My friend got in touch with this company and I have to say they were absolutely amazing. Looked after my friends and I so well and for a reasonable price. Got to see all over Nepal and even had our own personalised driver. Ramesh was also so friendly and made sure we felt so welcome. If you are looking for a guide for Nepal I would highly recommend this company.

With aim of sustaining local communities, we only employ local people as trekking guide and porter. Our all trekking guides are certified by Nepal Government, Ministry of Tourism. We manage trekking team such a way that one trekking guide in each group and porters like one porter for two trekkers.
Luggage while Ghandruk Trek
During the trek, your main luggage will be carried by porters or pack animals (usually yaks or cross-breeds). You simply carry a day pack with water bottle, camera, sunscreen, spare jacket, etc. – a small load that allows full enjoyment of the trek. A trek bag is ideal for your main luggage, plus a small lockable bag for travel clothes or anything that you do not need during trek which you can leave at hotel’s locker room in Kathmandu for free of charge.
Day Routine during Ghandruk Trek
Every morning, first of all, packing your bags and then have a hearty breakfast at the lodge restaurant. Then set off on the day’s walk. After walking for 3-4 hours you all stop for lunch in local restaurant. Then continue walking to your destination. After lunch, it’s the only couple of hours walking. You usually arrive at your destination in the time of afternoon tea. Check in at the lodge. The rest of the day is at leisure. At the free time, you may explore surrounding village, do a bit of washing or simply relax by reading books and writing a diary. On some days you will arrive at your destination by lunch time and entire afternoon will be free. Most people also spend free time by playing cards and other games reliving the day’s adventures. Then in the evening have a dinner and you will be briefed by your trekking guide about your next day’s walking and then go to your bed for well-earned sleep.
Health & Fitness for Ghandruk Trek
Ghandruk Trekking is an easy trek suitable for any passionate walkers who able to walk 4 to 5 hours a day with a light day pack. Walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes; however, if you are in excellent health with average physical fitness and have a positive attitude, self-confidence and strong determination, you can do this trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance your strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no compulsorily required for this trip. It is vital for participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases to consult their doctor before taking the trip.
Case of Itinerary Changes
The itinerary for each trip should be taken as a guideline only. Depending on the situation, you can modify it to some extent after consulting with your guide. However, the date of trip ending should always coincide with the original itinerary.
Kindly keep in mind that sometimes unforeseen events may contribute to the need for a change in itinerary. In such cases, we or your guide will suggest the best alternative similar to your original.
Environmental Concern in Ghandruk Trekking
Naturally the route of Ghandruk Trekking (Annapurna Region) is so beautiful but equally, it is fragile as well. Increasing population density and numbers of trekkers threaten the very beauty of this area. We at Silver Himalaya Adventures are extremely conscious about protecting its beautiful natural environment and preserving the fascinating local culture. We are doing our level best to minimize our impact as much as possible. Our all trekking guides and porters are well trained and motivated to following guidelines of responsible tourism and eco-friendly tourism. In trekking, they also advise you do’s and don’ts to minimize your impact on the local environment.
Optional Side Trips for Ghandruk Trekking
In addition to your Trekking trip, you can join in various side Trips in Nepal like a cultural tour of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Jungle Safari in National Park, White Water Rafting in Himalayan Rivers, Golfing, Adventure activities like Bungee Jumping, Altra Light Flight, Paragliding, Jeep flyer etc. You also can extend your trip to neighboring Himalayan Countries: Bhutan, Tibet, Sikkim (India) which seems more appealing to you. On your request, we will give you the detail of the side trips.

Nepal is home to many of the world’s largest mountain peaks and best trekking trails in the world . But don’t think you have to train for months or conquer high altitudes to enjoy Nepal’s mountains – there are plenty of treks to suit any fitness level. The Ghandruk trek is a perfect example!
The Ghandruk trek is the perfect option for anyone looking for a short trek in Nepal, with no difficult ascends/descends. This short but sweet trek takes three to four days, bringing you into the foothills of the Himalayas.
I came to Nepal with the intention of conquering the Everest Base Camp trek, but food poisoning got the best of me (thanks to India), and unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards. Thankfully, I was still able to see some of Nepal’s incredible landscapes on the three days Ghandruk Trek.
What is the Ghandruk Trek?
The Ghandruk Trek is a 3-day trek that takes you into the foothills of the Annapurna Mountain Ranges to the beautiful heritage village of Ghandruk.
There are plenty of friendly locals to host you in the villages, as well as a Gurung museum which you can visit to learn more about the Gurung culture.
The Annapurna Region is one of the most beautiful places to go trekking in the world, with plenty of different treks, such as the popular Annapurna Circuit . This trek takes almost two weeks, so if you don’t have a lot of time, the Ghandruk trek is a nice way to get a taste of the mountains.
A nice aspect of the Ghandruk trek is that you won’t see many other tourists on the trail. Instead, you will find lush green forests, friendly locals, and beautiful views.
Ghandruk Trek Itinerary
The Ghandruk Trek is typically done in 3-4 days. I did the 4-day trek as part of a one-week tour through Nepal with Intrepid Travel. Four days will give you plenty of time to stop to enjoy the scenery, chat with locals, and take your time to explore the picturesque villages.
The first day starts with an hour’s drive from Pokhara to the trailhead of the Ghandruk trek.
We started the trail, which went through forests, paddy fields, and stone stairs. The Annapurna mountain ranges should also be visible on this part of the trek, but because it was overcast on the first day of our trek, we couldn’t see them during the day.
Although I was disappointed about the lack of mountain ranges in view, the scenery was still beautiful as we passed through many local villages and colorful paddy fields. The clouds added a certain moodiness to the landscape.
It was so interesting to pass by all the beautiful villages and see the local women hard at work. Everyone we passed was friendly and said hello.
The first day of the trek ends at the charming village of Ghandruk. Inhabited by the Gurung community, Ghandruk village is well-serviced, with tea houses to stay in. It has stunning views of the Annapurna South mountain range, including Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare.
On our first night in Ghandruk, the clouds cleared out from the sky, and I saw the Himalayas appear before my eyes for the first time. It was a moment I’ll never forget. Although it was freezing, I stood outside and watched them lit by the moon and stars for hours.
The next morning, we woke up early to see the sunrise over the mountains. The way the morning light hits them is incredible. It’s one of the best sunrises I’ve woken up for.
The second day starts with more mountain views for breakfast, then a two-hour descending trek towards the village of Tolka where we stopped for lunch. Afterward, we trekked another three hours up to a village where we spent the night in tea house.
You don’t get bored on the trail as there is so much beauty around. Aside from the majestic mountain landscapes, the paths are full of green forests, red rhododendrons, and friendly faces. Both locals and animals. I encountered so many dogs, cows, and goats on this trail!
View this post on Instagram How is it even legal to be this cute? A post shared by Dogs Around The World (@doggosintheworld) on Nov 23, 2018 at 5:50am PST
So many dogs would come and join me for parts of the trek which was one of my favorite parts about it.
You will also meet lots of friendly locals and fellow trekkers while staying at the tea houses. This was one of my favorite parts about trekking in Nepal; the feeling of community in each of the villages is so special.
On the third day of the trek, we took a trail from the village of Dhampus to Hemjakot.
It was mostly uphill for the first two hours, then downhill for the rest for a total of six hours of trekking. This section of the trail was fairly remote; we hardly saw any other people.
Just a lot of beautiful rhododendron plants, which I never got sick of.
That night we stayed with a local family in their home in Hemjakot. I loved this stay as they had a ton of baby goats we got to play with.
The Ghandruk trek could be done in three days, but we extended it to four. The last day was an easy three-hour descent to Phedi, where we caught a bus back to Pokhara in time for a well-deserved lunch.

Food on The Ghandruk Trek
You don’t need to worry about bringing a ton of food or water with you on the Ghandruk trek because you will pass by and stay in so many villages with restaurants. Of course, I always recommend bringing snacks while trekking! My favorite is cliff bars.
The food they sell in the tea houses is surprisingly diverse. You can get local Nepali cuisine, as well as Western food like pizza and pasta. It’s not amazing but definitely does the trick. The best part about the restaurants is that they usually come with an amazing view.
The villages usually have a small shop where you can fill up water and snacks. Nothing was particularly healthy, but it’s good if you need a quick sugar pick-me-up. One of the best parts about hiking is justifying all the snacks!
Fitness Level Required for the Ghandruk Trek
The Ghandruk trek is relatively easy. Each day is only about five-six hours of walking, so you don’t need to be in amazing shape to do this. That said, there are a lot of stairs, so be prepared for that.
Unlike many treks in Nepal, you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness on this trail. The trek doesn’t go past 2000 meters of elevation.
How to Book the Ghandruk Trek
You can do this trek as part of a tour with Intrepid, who I recommend as a tour company.
Not only do they plan excellent tours, but they are committed to responsible travel. I’ve traveled with them in the past, and it’s allowed me to have unique experiences and connections with the local community. You will be in good hands with them!
Alternatively, you can book the Ghandruk trek right here through a Nepal travel agency. There are many all along the lakeside in Pokhara. If you are in Kathmandu, you will need to get the tourist bus to Pokhara, which takes about seven hours.
Permits are required for the trek, which you can arrange from tour agencies. A guide is not required for the trail but is recommended if you are not a seasoned trekker or not well-versed with Napoli language and culture.
Not only will the guide help you during the trek with guidance, but they can provide insight into the local culture.
Best time to go on the Ghandruk Trek
The best season to go on the Ghandruk Trek is from Mid-September until May, when you find great views around the region.
The summer season from June-July is the rainy season and not a good time to go trekking in this region.
Packing List for the Ghandruk Trek
You won’t find hotels, but you will find small villages with tea houses to stay in all along the trail.
You don’t need to worry about bringing food and water, as supplies can be bought at each village, and there are plenty of tea houses to cook you a meal.
Here is a suggested packing list for the Ghandruk Trek. You can always hire a porter if you don’t want to carry your bag.
- SPF T-Shirts x3
- Hiking Pants X 2
- Underwear X 3
- Comfortable trekking shoes, and sandals to wear at night
- Packable Down jacket
- Hat/Scarf/Gloves for night
- Sunscreen/Sun hat/Sunglasses
- Refillable Water bottle – Use Lifestraw and then you can drink the water along the way
- Packable Towel
- Sleeping bag – the teahouses provide blankets but they are lightweight and it can be chilly at night
- Trekking poles – not essential but can be helpful going downhill
- Camera – check my photography guide for the best travel cameras.
Don’t forget travel insurance!
You definitely want travel insurance if you plan to trek in Nepal. Injuries are common on the trails, and in the event that something happens and you have to get air-lifted out via helicopter, this won’t be cheap.
Other Adventurous Things to do around Pokhara
Pokhara was one of my favorite places in Nepal; there’s a ton of outdoor adventure around the area.
1. Paragliding
I took my first paragliding flight in Pokhara, which was so much fun and got me hooked on paragliding. It’s one of the top 5 commercial tandem paragliding locations in the world, making it a perfect place to try if it’s your first time paragliding.
2. River Rafting
River Rafting. I actually got to Pokhara via a 2-day river rafting tour from Kathmandu on the Trishuli River. It was an incredible experience; we rafted for about six hours a day and camped overnight by the side of the river.
3. Zip-lining
Another way to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu that looks pretty epic is this 2-day zip-lining adventure. While Costa Rica will still forever be my favorite place to go zip-lining, this one does look incredible and I’m adding it to my list for the next time I’m in Nepal!
4. Trekking
With the Annapurna mountain ranges so close by, there are plenty of other hikes to do in the area, including the famous Annapurna Base Camp trek and Annapurna Circuit trek. Another popular trek to do in the area is the 9 Day Ghorepani Poonhill Trekking.
5. Helicopter Flight
If you’re not up for hiking, there are other ways to enjoy the mountain ranges! You can take a scenic helicopter flight , or a micro-light flight . I did the helicopter flight over Everest and it was incredible.
6. Chitwan National Park
After Pokhara, I went to Chitwan National Park, which is about four hours away. I have mixed feelings about this park. While it’s one of the best places in the world to see the one-horned Rhino , I felt depressed about how the park treated its elephants . There are plenty of other incredible ethical elephant encounters in Asia if you want to see them.

Ghandruk Trek
- Trekking in Nepal
- Annapurna Region
These treks are suitable for any walker looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. They are a combination of some longer and shorter walks and hill-walking experience is desirable. The duration is usually from 10 to 15 days. Following the up and down terrain of Nepal and walking to higher elevations contrasts these treks to those in the easy classification. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular close-up views of glaciers and of the high Himalayas. Although the terrain is not difficult, some vigorous hiking experience is useful. There may be up to 6 hours a day on the trail and the elevation rises and falls from 800m/ 2624ft to 4000m/13210ft above sea level.

The Ghandruk Trek Explore the Cultural Heritage of the Gurung Tribe
The Ghandruk Trek offers an extraordinary journey through the cultural heritage of the Gurung tribe, preserving their unique linguistic traditions. This village, once a settlement for retired Gurkha soldiers from the British Army, resonates with tales of bravery. Nestled among the majestic Annapurna range, Ghandruk village is a testament to natural beauty, captivating visitors with its picturesque charm.
A Scenic Trek Through Kaski District
The Ghandruk trek leads to a highly developed village in the Kaski district, located within the Annapurna Rural Municipality. It’s the nearest trekking destination to Pokhara, with just a 1-hour bus or taxi ride from the city to Nayapul. The trail from Syauli Bazar to Ghandruk village covers about 11 kilometers. It typically takes around 4 hours and 40 minutes to hike.
Immersing in the Culture of Ghandruk Villages
The Gurungs of Ghandruk village preserve their unique cultural identity and traditions, drawing from both Pye-Tan Lhu-Tan and Hinduism, with reverence for natural deities. Originally practitioners of the ancient Bon religion, a pre-Buddhist tradition of Tibet characterized by shamanism and animism, the Gurung people later embraced Tibetan Buddhism. The Gurung Museum in Ghandruk offers a fascinating insight into their way of life, rich history, and vibrant culture. Visiting the Gurung Museum provides a prime opportunity to delve deeper into the essence of the Ghandruk trek.
An Ideal Short Trek with Breathtaking Views
The Ghandruk village trek itinerary is perfect for those seeking a relatively short trek with less altitude gain, yet offering equally magnificent views of the Annapurna Himalayan range. Unlike longer and more strenuous treks like the Annapurna Base Camp, the Ghandruk to Mardi Himal Trek is an excellent alternative if you have an additional four days. This extension starts from Tolkha and ends in Siden village after the Mardi base camp. The 4-day Ghandruk trek captures excellent mountain views of the Annapurna Range. Moreover, including stunning vistas of Himchuli (6,441 m), Fishtail (6,993 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), Singu Chuli (6,501 m), and Gandharva Chuli (6,997 m) can be seen.
A Harmonious Blend of Ethnic Diversity
Primarily inhabited by the Gurung ethnic group, Ghandruk village also hosts other castes such as Brahmin, Magar, Chhetri, Kami, Damai, and Sarki. All these groups respect and follow the Gurung culture. Ghandruk Village, at 2,010 meters above sea level, boasts a successful tourist lodge, making a short Ghandruk trek doable for families, children, solo travelers, and groups.
Comprehensive Ghandruk Trek Itinerary
The Ghandruk village trekking itinerary spans four days, starting from Pokhara city with a drive to Syauli Bazar. The hike begins from Syauli Bazar, stopping at Birethanti to enter the permit for the Annapurna Conservations Area Project (ACAP) Checkpost. Birethanti is the trail separated from the popular Poon Hill and Ghandruk village trek. The itinerary also covers Jhinu Danda Hot Spring, Tolkha, and Dhampus village, and concludes with a drive back to Pokhara city.
Expert-Led Treks with Cultural Immersion
We lead Ghandruk Treks with professional expert guides and strong porters who are locals from the Annapurna region. They are experienced and familiar with the local people, cultures, histories, and natural surroundings. Our trip prices are very competitive, offering an excellent short trek package that explores Gurung villages.

As you reach, you can stop for lunch or tea break there. After having your short break, head up through stone steps cross the suspension bridge and so again, move upwards over steps up to the Kimchee. From where local buses run to Pokhara and Nayapol. Now the trail little bit wide and easy. But not steps, only the wide path before half and hours to the Ghandruk. Beautiful stream and waterfall along with women who are carrying the mountain grass in bamboo basket make completely awe-inspiring environment that take up to the Ghandruk. There are lots of tea houses in the town. Choose which hotel you like and overnight for the stay. If you have time, in the late afternoon you can go to make a round the village. And major attraction of that village are Great Himalayas, Mountain museum and old town of Gandruk.

As you find the trail, you will descend through the stone stairs over the mountain terrain with lovely view of Mountain and natural scenery.
After half and hours, you will meet and cross the pleasing iron bridge. Which is above the small stream and very beautiful part of the trail in between. Keep your pace steadily and move upwards direction through to mountain terrace you will find the blue color zinc roof traditional house that is standing alone. There you can stop for short break or take a rest. Buy some things that can help to generate their income. Because they also have a small shop and like a tea house. Afterward, descend gradually from bamboo forest with striking view of South Annapurna and Hiunchuli. The trail lead little up and down for the few minutes on the way.
But, all the way descending before meet the Modi bridge. As you reach river, there is small wooden bridge. Cross and head up for half and hours to the Jhinu. There are lots of tea houses and guest houses. Take a stop and order for lunch. After that again descend to the hot spring from end to end forest and again meet the swimming part of pond. Take a swim for one hour. So again, follow the same trail to head up to tea house. Take your lunch which you had ordered. Afterward, again follow the same path up to the two way breaking point of Ghandruk. Do not head up, move downwards to the new bridge. By following the bamboo and little bunch of rhododendron forest with other species of trees, you will cross the new suspension bridge. Then after, step by step the trail goes slowly but surely to the upward up to Landruk. Overnight stay place.
Ghandruk Trek – From Landruk to Dhampus for 5 hrs.
Wake up early morning and enjoy the view from the Tea house lodge. It’s very perfect view that you can enjoy from there. Ordered for piquant tea that can make your mood fresh and enjoyable. From there stunning view of south Annapurna and Hiunchuli can be seen. As well as the valley Pokhara also can be viewed.

So again, descend by showing the ACAP ( Annapurna Conservation Area Project ) permit. You will reach Dhampus. This is unspoiled place to view the close up and panoramic view of mountains that can be seen from Pokhara. In Dhampus, the lodges are very well decorated and luxury then the usual.
Ghandruk Trek – From Dhampus to Phedi for 2hrs and drive back to Pokhara around half and hours.
After your daily morning meal, keep an eye on 15 min on the wide road trail and ask to the local people from where can you descend to Phedi. If you follow the same graveled road, then it will take long to reach down. But, there is a small track that you can descend through. Annapurna Mardi Himal Trek
Share this:.
US $1840 per person
Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively newly opened hiking trail off the beaten path. The hiking area is a hidden gem located south of the Annapurna region . Despite its proximity to Pokhara, it is a quieter alternative. The Mardi Himal Trek is also a great option if you don’t have enough time for one of the longer trekking tours.
Small Nepalese villages, breathtaking views, blooming rhododendron forests: the Mardi Himal Trek combines a lot.
In just a few days you can reach heights of over 4,000m. The trek also offers the chance to get to know traditional Gurung villages and their people.
You will first follow the frequented route from Annapurna Base Camp to Deurali. You will spend the night in the Forest Camp (Kokar) and work your way up via two other camps, past the Upper View Point (4,200 m) to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m). The way to the base camp requires sure-footedness and partly leads through pathless terrain. Those who do not want to do this can rest at Upper View Point.
Once at the Upper View Point, you can enjoy unique views of the summit chain of the Annapurna massif: Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the beautiful Mount Fishtail (Machhapuchare) stand in a trellis. On the way back to Pokhara, you will walk through the typical Gurung villages of Landruk and Gandruk where you will spend 2 nights in at home-stays.
After a successful Mardi Himal Trek you can enjoy the idyllic & beautiful Phewa Lake in Pokhara. In Kathmandu, you can also enjoy the panoramic Everest View Mountain flight (not included in the program cost).
We would be pleased to have you on this journey and introduce you to our country and way of life while you travel as part of our extended family.

Day 3: trek to forest camp (2590m; 6 hrs).
Today’s trek heads off into the wilderness, leaving tourists, other trekkers, and even villagers behind. The trail climbs and meanders through the rhododendron forest to the small human settlement of Pitam Deurali (2,100m). The Modi Khola valley is dominated by ‘Pritam Deurali’ wedged between Mardi Himal/Macchapuchre and Annapurna South.
From Deurali onward the trail passes through an enchanted forest of birch, giant rhododendron, mountain oak, maple, and hemlock. The trail climbs up then undulates on the top of a ridge and then drops steeply and slowly ascends back onto the ridge till you arrive at the open grassland at Forest Camp.
If the weather is clear there will be stunning mountain views while trekking.
Overnight in local lodge at Forest Camp (B,L,D)
Day 4: trek to low camp (2950m; 4 hrs).
You will truly understand the remoteness of the Mardi Himal Trek on the way to Low Camp as you leave the terraced fields and villages that cling to the hillsides in the distance.
The day initiates with a steep hike of the trail that gradually transforms itself into a dense rhododendron forest. Throughout you will recognize glimpses of Mt. Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal getting closer.
An hour into the hike will bring you to Badal Danda, a.k.a. cloud hill, (3,250m). Badal Danda lies atop of the tree line and offers a pellucid view of snow-capped mountains and overview of villages down south.
After another 3 hours along the wooded trail, with the Modi Khola to your left, you will arrive at Low Camp which is just a clearing in the forest with a couple of tea-houses. You will have the rest of the day to soak in beautiful views of Machhapuchre.
Overnight at a tea-house at Low Camp (B,L,D)
Day 5: trek to high camp (3580m; 4 hrs).
Today, you will gradually ascend above the tree line to alpine vegetation through the occasionally grassy landscape that leads towards the Mardi Himal. The trail is characterized by a repetition of steep ascents, subsequent flat sections, and further ascents.
The high camp is a small pasture with a few lodges where you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Annapurna range, the valley of the Annapurna Base Camp and Mount Machhapuchhre. From high camp Annapurna South feels just a stone’s throw away and Machhapuchhre seems even closer.
Overnight in a tea-house at High Camp (B,L,D)
Day 6: day hike to view point (4450m; 7-8 hrs).
This is the hardest day! You will have an early start for an amazing sunrise and stunning mountain views.
The first stretch of the hike is a steep uphill for about 2 hours which many refer to as Mardi Himal Base Camp but the actual base camp is a further 2 hours steep climb away along the ridge. The view point offers a gorgeous panorama of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal peaks.
Depending upon conditions, you can either return back to high camp or either continue along to the actual MBC where an even up-close view of the Annapurna Massif, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre peak awaits you.
You will then head back for lunch at high camp and spend the rest of the day at leisure. The sunset is as alluring as the previous day as the sun sets over the mountains from the comfort of your warm tea house.
Overnight in a tea-house at High Camp (B,L,D)
Day 7: descend to forest camp (2590m; 5 hrs).
After a hefty breakfast you will retrace your steps back to forest camp.
Day 8: Trek to Kalimati (1600m; 2 hrs)
After a relaxed breakfast, you will hike gently through the shade of the forest and out onto terraced fields, descending 5249 ft. (1600 m.) You will follow a different route down, to the upper Mardi Khola, the torrent that was once the ice and snow of the Mardi Himal. Although remote and still off the beaten ‘tea-house’ trekking routes, your route now follows the arm valley and past friendly villages into Kalimati.
Overnight in local lodge at Kalimati (B,L,D)
Day 9: to lwang (1500m; 4-5 hrs).
From Kalimati you will trek gently like to Siding. The path from Siding gradually follows the contour of the river valley, down between the pastures and through Tamang and Gurung villages. Eventually, you’ll arrive at Lwang village, your stop for the night. Here, there are organic tea gardens.
Enjoy an overnight in your unique and authentic homestay.
Overnight in local lodge at Lwang (B,L,D)

3 day Ghandruk Trek I had a short window for trekking while in Nepal for an event. Angie was very professional and prompt in arranging the trek for my schedule even when I was slow to decide and respond. My guide Ram was friendly and knowledgeable and chose clean and comfortable places with great views for lodging and meals. They both went above and beyond to make my experience the best it could be. I only wish I’d had more time for a more challenging trek SOURCE | TRIPADVISOR
An Excellent Team We had a very short notice trip into Nepal but with some ideas of what we wanted to do. Eyes on Nepal responded quickly (email and whatsapp) and offered suggestions for a short Ghandruk Landruk trek. We were in country before the arrangements were finalized. Nothing however was too much trouble with Mishra meeting us at the hotel to sort and pass on the details. The planning, in country flights, pickups, permits and Pokhara hotels were professionally and seamlessly done. The trek was excellently managed. Ram our guide was a rare gem. Being of a more mature generation perhaps the mind was a bit more ambitious than the legs were prepared for (all those downhill steps!). Ram’s patience, knowledge and encouragement were instrumental in making this a most enjoyable and memorable experience. We look forward to further trekking with him. A really excellent and supportive team. No hesitation in recommending them. SOURCE | TRIPADVISOR

Kande: You can find plenty of buses from Pokhara to Kande. The drive takes approximately one and a half hours from Pokhara and costs you about US$ 2-3 per person. It is important to remember the roads to Kande get muddy and slippery during the monsoon. Therefore, it may take 4-5 hours for the same road trip during the rainy season.
Landruk: You can find a few buses and jeeps from Pokhara to Landruk. However, it is difficult to find transportation service during the monsoon. A local bus charges about US$ 5 per person, and a jeep travel costs about US$ 9 every individual.
End of the Trek:
The endpoint for Mardi Himal Trek is at Siding. Taking a jeep from Siding village is the only available option to drive to Pokhara. The charge of the vehicle mostly depends on the season, the number of people, and your negotiating skills. It usually costs around US$ 9 to 10 per person for 5 to 9 people.
Alternative Route Options for Mardi Himal Trek
Standard route (kande – siding) – 42 km.
Kande to Siding is the most popular route options to trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp. This standard route begins with a short drive to Kande. On the first day, the trekkers either walk to Deurali or Forest Camp.
Traversing through the dense forests, villages, diverse terrains, all the way to Mardi Himal Base Camp, the trek ends at Siding village. You can catch a jeep directly from Siding to Pokhara for about US$ 9 to $10. The entire standard trail covers a total of 42 km with 5-7 hours of walking each day.
Connection Route (Ghandruk/Kyumi – Siding) – 35/31 km
Trekkers who decide to extend their trek after Annapurna Base Camp or Poonhill Trek usually prefer this option. It is possible to start the extension either from Ghandruk or from Kyumi.
Once you diverge from the routes of Annapurna Base Camp, the trail to Mardi Himal connects at Forest Camp. After Forest Camp, you will follow a similar path as the standard route until the end of the trek.
If you start the trek from Ghandruk, the entire trek will cover a total distance of 35 km. However, if you start the trek from Kyumi, the whole length of the trek will be 31 km.

6 Days Mardi Himal Trek Outline Itinerary
Mardi himal trek detailed 6 days itinerary, day 1: drive from pokhara (900m) to kande (1,770m) and trek to deurali (2,200m).
Your adventure to Mardi Himal Trek begins with an hour-long drive from Pokhara to Kande. Upon reaching Kande, you’ll start trekking uphill towards the beautiful hamlet of Australian Camp. On a clear day, Australian Camp offers a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu.
After enjoying your time at the Australian Camp, you walk for another two hours on a pleasant trail to reach Deurali.
Day 2: Trek from Deurali (2,200m) to Low Camp (2,900m)
Today, you leave the crowded trails of Annapurna Sanctuary behind and take a solitary path towards the Forest Camp. The dense forest of rhododendron, maple, oak, and hemlock surrounds the entire trail. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach the Forest Camp.
The trail continues through the forest area. However, the vegetation varies as rhododendron trees become densely populated in this area. Ferns, lichens, and moss cover the trees dominantly. You’ll reach Low Camp late in the afternoon.
Day 3: Trek from Low Camp (2,900m) to High Camp (3,585m)
The trek continues gradually uphill into the rhododendron forests towards the Middle Camp, and then to Badal Danda. Badal Danda offers a marvelous sight of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Machhapuchhre, and Mardi Himal.
After walking for another hour above Badal Danda, the trail leaves the treeline behind. Mountain view of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli accompanies the path towards the west. The trail keeps on along the ridge covered with grasses and bushes until the High Camp.
There are a few lodges at the High Camp, and the view from the lodge points to Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli visible on a clear day.
Day 4: Hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) and Trek to High Camp (3,585m)
The day begins walking on a steep climb through the ridge towards Mardi Himal Base Camp. Since the trail is rocky, uneven and slippery, this section is the most tricky and challenging part of the trek.
Along the way, the fantastic views of Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre start unfolding in the backdrop. The trail passes through the pasture lands, then leads to the narrow ridges before reaching the Upper Viewpoint, and then to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. The mountain scenery from the base camp is exceptional.
After spending some time at the base camp, you retrace your route back to the High Camp.
Day 5: Trek from High Camp (3,585m) to Siding Village (1,750m)
From the High Camp, you’ll retrace the route until Low Camp, then take a different path that leads to Siding village. Most of the trail on this day is gradual downhill under the shades of dense forests.
Siding is a traditional Gurung village with a quiet and ambient atmosphere. The settlement is less busy even during the peak trekking seasons.
Day 6: Drive from Siding Village (1,750m) to Pokhara (900m)
On the final day of the adventure, you’ll hire a jeep and drive to Pokhara. You can also trek to Lumre and then hire a vehicle if you want to hike on the final day.
The road is graveled and rough from Siding until you reach the highway. It takes about 2-3 hours from Siding to reach Pokhara.
Best Time to Travel to Mardi Himal
Unlike most of the treks in Nepal, trekking to Mardi Himal is possible throughout the year. However, Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May) are two most favorable seasons to trek to Mardi Himal.
The temperature in Autumn is usually moderate and stable with a clear sky, which means the scenery of the mountains and landscapes is incredible throughout the trek. You also get to relish an exceptional sunrise and sunset during this period. However, the trekking trail is slightly more crowded in Autumn.
Spring is considered the second-best time for trekking in Nepal. The temperature is a bit warmer and stable during this time of the year. However, the sky can be slightly vague and hazy at times, which means the scenery may not be as exceptional as the Autumn.
Winter brings cold and harsh weather, especially at the higher elevations. Most of the time, snow covers the upper reaches of the trail. Therefore, in case of excessive snow, the trails may be more challenging to walk. However, the skies are unclouded and rewarding with magnificent sights. If you’re planning to trek to Mardi Himal during the winter, make sure to pack warm clothes and high-quality sleeping bags.
Monsoon is the least favorable time to go trekking in Mardi Himal. The temperature and weather are far too unstable with wet and slippery trails. Since dense forests dominate this region, the risk of leeches increases extensively. Trekking in monsoon demands proper preparation and packing for the wet weather.
Here’s a table indicating the details of average temperature and rainfall of different places en-route to Mardi Himal Trek:
How Difficult is Mardi Himal Trek?
Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively shorter and moderate trek that does not demand any technical skills. Lush green forests dominate the lower region of the trek while the trail in upper levels becomes slightly rough with naked and rocky terrains.
The most challenging section of this trek is to hike from the High Camp to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. The route becomes much steeper and slippery on this day. However, most of the trek is comfortable for an enjoyable and pleasant walk.
The entire trek covers roughly 50-65km depending upon which itinerary you choose. You can complete the trek from 5 to 8 days averaging 5 to 6 hours of a daily walk. The risk of Acute Mountain Sickness is minimum as the highest elevation point of this trek stands 4,500m at the Mardi Himal Base Camp. However, it is essential to stay hydrated and take the necessary precautions to prevent altitude sickness.
Since the weather conditions of the mountains change quickly, it is vital to pack all the essential gear for the trek. It is better to invest in high-quality waterproof boots and carry all the essentials for cold and wet weather.
Although experienced trekkers consider this Mardi Himal as an easy trek, it demands a certain level of physical fitness. You do not have to be an athlete to trek in this region, but we recommend you to do the necessary preparation, and cardio-related workout.
Mardi Himal Trek is an ideal destination for novice trekkers who are keen to experience the Himalayan adventure.
What Permits are Required for Mardi Himal Trekking?
While trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp, you will require two different permits — TIMS Card (Trekking Information Management System) and the ACAP permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project). You do not need any other special authorization to enter this area.
If you’re trekking with an authorized trekking company, they will take care of this hassle for you. However, if you’re planning to travel individually, you can acquire both of these permits from Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu as well as in Pokhara.
To acquire the TIMS Card and ACAP permits, you’ll require your passport, insurance details, four passport size photos, and contact details of a person in Nepal. If you do not have printed photos, you can take one at the office free of charge.
To receive the TIMS Card:
- You must first fill up the form you get from the counter of the Tourist Information Center in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
- Take a photo, if you haven’t brought it with you. You can take a photograph in the office without any charge.
- Submit the filled out form along with two passport size photos and NPR. 2000/$18 per person to the counter. Remember they only accept Nepalese Rupees, so make sure to exchange your dollars to NPR.

- Fill the necessary details in the form.

As of 2018, the province of Gandaki announced to charge a levy of US$10 per tourists to enter the area. But, it has not come into effect till now. However, it is handy to keep this in mind as it may be practiced any day.
Insurance for the Trek
It is essential to have travel insurance while trekking in the high Himalayas. The circumstances at such high elevation are unpredictable. Therefore, we highly recommend you to get the travel insurance for Mardi Himal Trek.
Make sure your insurance comprises all the essential costs like helicopter rescue, medical charges, natural disasters, trip cancelation, and theft. Since there is no reliable insurance company in Nepal, we recommend you to do it from World Nomads.
Guided VS Independent Trek
It is possible to do the Mardi Himal Trek both independently or with a guide. Despite being less commercial trekking route in the Annapurna region, the entire trail to Mardi Himal is well-marked with blue and white stripes. Additionally, the trek is relatively short and less challenging compared to other popular treks.
So, if you’re willing to trek solo in the Himalayas of Nepal, Mardi Himal is an ideal option for you. However, it is essential to have prior experience to do the trek independently. Trekking independently is comparatively cheaper than hiring a guide, but it also means you’ll have to tackle all the hassles by yourself.
Having an experienced guide can come in handy while trekking at high altitudes. Although hiring a guide may add your expense slightly, it is far safer than traveling solo. The guide will assist you throughout the entire trail and provide detailed insights into the place. If you hire a guide, you do not have to worry about the hassles. The guide will take care of the bus, jeep, permits, and hotels for the trip.
Accommodation and Food
Mardi Himal Trek was widely popular among the campers for over a decade. The trek officially opened in 2012 with teahouse services throughout the entire trail.
Teahouses along the Mardi Himal Trek have necessary facilities or minimal amenities and services. Most of the rooms consist of two single beds with thin mattresses and do not provide the attached toilet. The toilets are mostly shared, and running hot water is not available throughout the trek. However, some teahouses offer buckets of warm water with an additional charge. If you like, you can have it.
Although the teahouses do not offer a variety of food choices as other commercial treks do, they provide enough menu to have well. One impressive thing about the food in this trek is that the locals themselves produce the majority of the crops.
Dal Bhat is the most common meal, followed by pancakes, pasta, and chop suey. Since you’ll be burning a lot of calories while trekking, Dal Bhat is healthy and filled with proper calories to keep you going. Chocolate bars and treats are also widely available throughout the route. It is important to remember that the foods are more expensive in the higher reaches of the trek.
For extra amenities like hot showers, boiled water, wifi, and charging services, most of the teahouses charge you an additional amount.
Mardi Himal Trek Cost
Various factors, such as the number of days, mode of transportation, route, and season, will determine the cost of the trek. Mardi Himal is a short trek, so it is relatively cheaper compared to other treks in Nepal. On average, for a 6-day itinerary, the total cost can be around US$ 300-400.
You need to get TIMS Card, and ACAP permits to trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The cost of the TIMS Card is US$18 for an individual trekker and US$ 9 for group travelers. Additionally, the value of the ACAP permit is US$ 27 per person.
The price of the teahouses changes according to season. On average, the rooms will cost you approximately US$ 4 to 10 per night with an additional US$ 4 to 6 per meal.
If you travel by a local bus from Pokhara, it may cost you from US$ 2 to 6 per person depending upon where you want to start your trek (Kande or Landruk). However, if you choose to drive by a jeep, it’ll cost you around US$ 9 to 10.
If you do not want to travel solo, the cost of hiring a licensed guide is $20 to $25 per day. The cost of hiring a porter is $16 to $20. If you want to hire a porter cum guide, they’ll charge you US$ 18 to 20 per day.
Packing Lists for Mardi Himal Trek
Although Mardi Himal Trek is not as demanding as other popular treks in Nepal, you still have to pack the right gears before heading off to the trails. The majority of the packing things depend on when and how you’re planning to trek.
Since Mardi Himal is a relatively comfortable trek, you do not need to hire a porter to carry your things. Traveling solo means you’ll be taking all the stuff by yourself. So, you need to pack your bags lightly yet sufficiently.

Also, the blankets of the teahouses may not be clean all the time. So, if you carry a sleeping bag, you no longer have to worry about the dirty and smelly blankets!
Other Important Accessories:

Network Information
When it comes to telecommunication services, both NTC and Ncell works decently in the Mardi Himal Trek. However, the functions may not be available throughout the trail, especially in the higher elevations.
It is important to remember that cell phone services may not be consistent in all parts of the region. You may have to wander around to find decent network coverage in some remote villages.
Mobile internet services are not pretty stable and reliable due to inconsistent network coverage. But when the networks are decent, you can use the 3G services in both NTC and Ncell.
The majority of teahouses also provide WiFi services, but they might charge you a few extra bucks for it. WiFi is the most preferred way to stay connected with your friends and family despite the high number of users. In this case, the connection can get slower.
Useful Tips for Mardi Himal Trek
- Since Mardi Himal Trek is not as commercial as other treks in the Annapurna region, the number of teahouses are very limited. Make sure to pre-book your hotels to avoid the risk of accommodations filled to capacity.
- Although the possibility of altitude sickness is relatively lower in this trek, it is crucial to stay hydrated and stay cautious of the symptoms.
- Buying bottled waters might be slightly expensive and are not advisable as they create more trash in the trekking trail. The best idea is to carry a bottle and fill the water in the teahouses.
- It is essential to pack right gears while trekking to Mardi Himal. However, if you do not want to buy the trekking gear, renting the equipment in Kathmandu or Pokhara is highly advisable.
- If you’re trekking in monsoon or winter, the trails may be wet and slippery. We highly recommend you to buy waterproof hiking boots with sturdy soles for the trek.
- Mardi Himal Trek is relatively not as challenging as other trekking trails in Nepal. However, it does demand a certain level of physical fitness to do the trek. We recommend you to indulge in cardio-oriented activities a month before the trek.

So before traveling it is better to view the weather forecast. But an advantage would be the privacy you get during these seasons due to less crowded routes.
Accommodation
Spring and Autumn is the peak season for trekking so the routes are crowded with trekkers from around the world. You won’t get privacy in these routes as you meet fellow companions throughout the trek.
Also, the hotels are packed so you will have to share your room with other trekkers. And you might not get a room of your choice plus there are no attached bathrooms in high regions. So you will have to wait in a long queue and share public toilets.
