Journey - Freedom album cover

Journey's Freedom: a succession of songs that are the stuff of legend

The first journey album in more than a decade ticks all the right boxes – eventually.

Journey - Freedom album art

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Initial signs are not good. Journey ’s comeback album – their first for 11 years, since 2011’s Eclipse – comprises 15 tracks with a collective running time of more than an hour; that’s enough to test the patience of even the most browbeaten melodic-rock miserablist.

One’s initial reaction is that some judicious trimming should surely have been done. On the opening few tracks the band appear to be weighed down by their heritage, content to plough an uninspiring, not-quite-as-good-as- Don’t-Stop-Believin’ , balladic furrow.

But then things change – unequivocally for the better. Neal Schon has long raged against Journey’s perceived wimpiness, and when his steely six-string finally cuts loose on You Got The Best Of Me – a kinda punky version of Any Way You Want It (from 1980’s Departure ) – there’s no holding him, the band or the album back.

Journey have never rocked harder than on the raucous Come Away With Me (although Life Rolls On comes mighty close); the giant-sounding Let It Rain channels both ZZ Top and UFO ; towards the end of Holdin’ On , keyboard player Jonathan Cain goes stir crazy. Then there’s the spine-chilling United We Stand , with its prime-time, tear-muddied couplet: ‘ Love conquers all, even when darkness comes to call .’ Don’t it just. Because let us not forget: the hardest part of the night is the night.

So, yeah, forget about Freedom’s stumblesome beginning, and bid welcome to the stuff of legend: a succession of songs as peerless as the House Of Lords at chucking-out time. Props are due to singer Arnel Pineda, who has long banished the ghost of Steve Perry , together with returning bassist Randy Jackson and drummer Narada Michael ‘ I Shoulda Loved Ya ’ Walden. The rhythmists get to strut their funky stuff one time only, on the Hall & Oates-esque Still Believe In Love , otherwise it’s bish-bash business as usual.

Elsewhere, former (and now back in the line-up) Journey drummer Deen Castronovo crops up on vocals on the album’s most anomalous track, After Glow : sparse, ethereal, almost Enya-like. We conclude with seven-minute epic Beautiful As You Are , which begins in twee, tremulous fashion and then unexpectedly detonates, like a rogue UXB (the description ‘Journey play The Who ’s Won’t Get Fooled Again ’ comes remarkably close).

Ultimately, Freedom passes the Classic Rock AOR test with flying colours. Does it fly like an eagle, or does it pootle like a penguin? Emphatically the former. Rumours of Journey’s demise have been exaggerated. Don’t start bereavin’.

Journey – Life Rolls On Lyrics

Life rolls on lyrics by journey.

In the still of the night I look back on times that have changed me People whose faces all fade away And places that all seem like yesterday As I look to the road ahead Grateful, alive and I’m breathing

Yeah, life rolls on Right or wrong Turn around, face the changes Life rolls on Stealin’ time Just don’t get left behind

Times we’re anxious for nothing Finding faith to face a new day In the balance is compromise Believe love leads the way

Seasons change us While life’s songs remain the same Moments shape us All you believe

At the speed of light We make up our minds Life rolls on

Together, we face it all Find where we belong Confusion, illusion See through it all

Hold on, baby take my hand Where we belong, yeah Freedom calls our name We’ll sing our song Ooh-ooh, yea
h

The old has passed away We face a brand new day It’s time to face the truth To everything we knew

So now baby, just hold on Try to stand strong Yeah, feel life rolls on, oh

Life rolls on Life rolls on, everyday Life rolls on Yeah, life rolls on, everyday Life rolls on Ooh, we’re movin’ on Feel, life rolls on Ooh, keep movin’ on Feel, life rolls on Oh-ooh-oh Life rolls on

The journey of jelly roll, from troubled past to country stardom, june 20, 2024 - parker jones.

journey life rolls on

Jelly Roll has become a fixture in the Nashville music scene with his rugged persona, unique appearance (and stage name), and original lyrics. He found himself near the top of the rock and country charts in 2022 and subsequently received the “New Artist of the Year” award at last year’s Country Music Association Awards at the age of 38, a late age for a newcomer award.

While his arrival on the music charts might seem recent and sudden, Jelly Roll’s success is decades in the making. His story is one of trauma, grief, and depravity, but also perseverance, redemption, and freedom. These themes permeate Jelly Roll’s music, connecting the listener to an authentic and personal faith struggle that is reflective and relatable for many.

“Music and crime”

Born in Tennessee as Jason DeFord, Jelly Roll grew up in an unstable home with a mother who battled addiction and mental illness and a father who worked as a bookie. His adolescence was marked by trouble with the law, going in and out of detention centers, and eventually prison between the ages of 14 and 24 for drug related crimes.

A thread of music, however, can be traced throughout all his life. During his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in May of 2023, Jelly Roll described his relationship with music by saying, “my only other choice in life is criminal. That’s all I’ve ever done, Joe, is music and crime. That’s the only two things I’ve ever known.”

In the same discussion, Jelly Roll described the role of church in his life and what he considers to be a tumultuous relationship with God.

Today, Jelly Roll is married and raising his teenage daughter. While it is evident through his conversation with Rogan that he continues to engage in many of the habits and trends that have stained his life, he’s able to look back on the moment that he learned he had a daughter as the turning point. That news ignited his pursuit of a music career that led him to country music’s biggest stages.

Redeeming a part of his past, Jelly Roll now uses his platform to speak out against the raging fentanyl crisis affecting much of the American youth. He recognizes the power of his story and he desires to be part of the solution in ending the deadly epidemic.

Treating God as a genie

The earliest days of Jelly Roll’s public music career centered around the hip-hop genre, but he shifted towards southern rock and country in recent years. Jelly Roll’s life choices, both good and bad, are represented well in his song lyrics, especially those on his 2023 album “Whitsett Chapel,” named after the church he attended growing up. The verses in the song “ Halfway to Hell ” describe the dualistic nature of his life, wrapping around a chorus that displays the magnitude of his spiritual struggle:

“It feels like I’m caught in-between Halfway to heaven or halfway to hell My angels and demons at war with myself One foot in the fire and I still can’t tell Am I halfway to heaven Halfway to heaven or hell”

In the song “ Need a Favor, ” Jelly Roll describes his knowledge of aspects of faith, but his conscious decision not to participate in them unless he is desperate. He sings,

“I only talk to God when I need a favor And I only pray when I ain’t got a prayer So, tell me, who the h*ll am I to expect a savior? When I only talk to God if I need a favor”

The self-awareness he offers is refreshing in a culture that often, out of ignorance, treats God as a genie. Yet it’s difficult to discern if Jelly Roll has a desire to change and submit to the God he calls on when he needs a favor.

Other top hits, like “Son of a Sinner” and “Save Me” highlight the emptiness brought by a life that is chained to addictions and vices, and, consequently, the need for something greater to step in to save him.

Praying for supernatural redemption

For Christians, one of the challenges that comes with examining the life of someone like Jelly Roll is balancing the goodness of physical redemption and the blessings that follow alongside the emptiness of those blessings apart from the supernatural redemption found only in Christ (Romans 3:21-25).

Music is simply the earthly vessel that pulled Jelly Roll out of the mire of brokenness and pain. But grace, by the blood of Jesus, is the eternal vessel that can pull anyone out of the mire of sin and death. When evaluating Jelly Roll’s life and lyrics, there is a gentle recognition of this truth but an intentional rejection of its applicability in his life remains.

You likely do not have to look far to find someone you are familiar with whose life echoes this same story. For many who grew up in the United States, especially in the heartland or the south, Christianity and religious language is infused into their identity whether they have a practicing faith today or not. Perhaps it is the widespread relatability, rather than the uniqueness, of Jelly Roll’s story and heartfelt lyrics that has driven his popularity.

As always, we should be praying—both for Jelly Roll and for whoever else came to mind as you read about his faith struggle (Romans 10:1-4). For those that relate to his lyrics, we should pray that his music can be used for redemptive purposes, sparking listeners to ask the right questions and seek out truthful answers.

It was the first time she got to hear the tour crowd sing it back too — which is why I love this one.

This is the actual cell — not recreated or one like it — but the actual one I spent years in. It’s the room where someone knocked on my door to tell me that I had a daughter [Bailee, now 16], and when I turned around to ask if they knew her name, his response was, “Hell if I know.” This is the cell where I knew it had to be different.

2/19/24: Opening a Recording Studio at His Juvenile Detention Center

I’ve never written more or been more inspired than I have for this next record. I’ve experienced a lot in the last year that I never thought would be possible, and met and worked with people I never thought I’d be able to. I wrote “I Am Not Okay” earlier this year and it’s something I immediately wanted to put out. That sentence, [those] four words, with no words more than three letters, is somehow the hardest sentence for a lot of people to say out loud. Recording this song and hearing those words come off the page, I knew it had to be on the record.

I said this on stage, but this brought me right back to sitting in the backseat of the car riding around town with my older siblings, listening to the radio and singing every word to every song, and never having control of the radio dial since I was the youngest. It’s a huge deal to win Best New Country Artist and represent country music, and Best New Pop Artist. I hope that means the music is striking a chord — its message is bigger than any one genre — and that people connect to it.

Supporting the Ruidoso, New Mexico, area amidst devastating wildfires

Since its start on Monday, June 17, wildfires have been burning around the Ruidoso area of New Mexico – consuming over 21,000 acres, destroying an estimated 1,400 homes and other structures.

With a State of Emergency in place, crews are relying on Verizon to provide critical connectivity, especially for wild land firefighters who are working to contain these deadly fires. Public safety officials are working with Verizon’s Frontline Crisis Response Team , which deployed temporary cell sites like COLTS (Cell on Light Truck), SPOTS (Satellite Picocell on a Trailer) and RRCU’s (Rapid Response Connectivity Unit), to affected areas.

Multiple charging stations have also been deployed to at least four Red Cross shelters in the area.

⚽ Total by Verizon is making your voice heard at the 2024 Copa América!

The 2024 Copa América kicks off today at 8 PM ET with a match between Argentina and Canada, and we know plenty of V Teamers are excited for this important tournament.

Folks have their picks of who they’re personally rooting for, but if you need another team to cheer on, Total by Verizon will be showing up big for our customers, something we can all feel proud of!

It’s no secret that ticket prices can be very expensive, so Total is doing something neat for fans who may not be able to attend the games in person. Starting today, they’ll be launching their “Text-to-sign” campaign – here’s how it works:

Leveraging our most reliable 5G network, soccer fans can send a text with a message to 1-855-504-SIGN in support of their favorite teams, players, or the sport itself. And guess what? The message you send may be featured on a sign held up by our “Total Sign Guy” who’ll be present at five games this summer!

Super cool! What would your sign say? Let us know in the comments below!

V Teamer Mark Woosley shares his Cancer journey

V Teamer Mark Woosley is a Director of Cybersecurity Operations based in Castle Rock, CO. Mark shared his inspiring cancer journey, which began in late 2021 after a visit to the emergency room.

Mark shared that he’d been feeling off and after a full MRI scan, doctors found a tumor growing off his right kidney that had grown to 12 centimeters and taken over adrenal glands and lymph nodes in the area. He proceeded with surgery to remedy what they could, and says the eight weeks of medical leave he received through Verizon were instrumental in the healing from the procedures. He stressed how grateful he was that applying for the leave was simple, especially during such a stressful time.

Mark went on to share that he wasn’t a candidate for chemotherapy, and so he decided to embark on a more holistic journey, turning to alternative forms of medicine like an ayurvedic therapist, breathing exercises and switching to a fully plant-based, vegan diet. As the months went by, he re-did his CT scan and found that his numbers had improved and the size of the two tumors they were monitoring were shrinking. He took that as confirmation that his lifestyle choices were having the greatest impact on his recovery and overall health.

When it came time to consider what these treatments were going to cost him, he was delighted to find out that the acupuncture, ayurvedic medicine and therapy for grief were all covered by Verizon’s insurance .

Be sure to watch Mark’s full story in the replay video above.

Jelly Roll’s Anthem of Perseverance, and 9 More New Songs

Hear tracks by Zsela, the Decemberists, Khalid and others.

A man with face tattoos who's dressed in all black, including a backward ball cap, holds a microphone stand with one hand and points to a cross tattooed on his cheek with the other.

By Jon Pareles

Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the week’s most notable new tracks. Listen to the Playlist on Spotify here (or find our profile: nytimes) and at Apple Music here , and sign up for The Amplifier , a twice-weekly guide to new and old songs.

Jelly Roll, ‘ I Am Not Okay ’

The title of “I Am Not Okay” — a song Jelly Roll unveiled last month on “The Voice” — only tells half the story. It’s the kind of bruised, long-suffering, self-doubting, painfully open and high-drama testimonial that has turned Jelly Roll into a country star. He sings about sleepless nights and “voices in my head,” with production that rises from acoustic picking into stolid Southern rock behind his grainy voice. But soon Jelly Roll invokes a community — “I know I can’t be the only one who’s holding on for dear life” — and the promise of salvation: “The pain’ll wash away in a holy water tide.” Whether it’s in this life or beyond it, he declares, “It’s not OK, but we’re all gonna be all right.” It’s an arena-scale homily.

NxWorries featuring Earl Sweatshirt and Rae Khalil, ‘ WalkOnBy ’

NxWorries — the partnership of the producer Knxwledge and the rapper and singer Anderson .Paak — ponders the deeply mixed emotions of enjoying success while knowing how hard former peers are still striving. “When you walk on by, you’ve got shades to hide your eyes,” the chorus chides. The track is a relaxed, quiet-storm groove with tickling lead-guitar lines, but it provides contrast, not comfort. “No one has a clue what we had to do to survive,” Anderson .Paak raps, and adds, “When they ask me how I’m doing, I feel guilty inside.” Earl Sweatshirt admits he’s “lived too many lives removed from the strife.” But before the song ends, Rae Khalil sings for those left behind: “I feel like ain’t nobody caring/Everybody’s scared,” she laments.

Zsela, ‘ Not Your Angel ’

With her low, smoky voice and her coziness with synthesizers, Zsela has learned quite a bit from Joan Armatrading . “Not Your Angel,” from her new album “Big for You,” is a love song that starts with tentative, stop-start arpeggios and negative declarations — “I’m not your perfect/I’m not your fantasy” — and soon reveals its romantic aspirations: “Would you judge me if I can’t wait to be?” As the track unfolds, diffidence gives way to eager longing and the music opens up: Pinpoint syncopations are joined by cushiony chords, and short, hopping vocal lines expand into melodies.

Tanner Adell, ‘ Too Easy ’

“Boys are too easy,” Tanner Adell taunts in a song that fuses country with electronic dance music. It starts with an old-timey fiddle and mentions sweet tea, fishing and the proverbial “first rodeo.” But the beat is a kick-drum thud and the production stacks Adell’s voice into a banshee chorus, then pitch-shifts it at whim, a long way from a hoedown. PARELES

The Decemberists, ‘ Burial Ground ’

With brightly chiming Byrds guitars and comradely Beach Boys harmonies, the Decemberists visit a graveyard and seriously consider whether death would be a relief in “Burial Ground,” from their new album, “As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again.” Colin Meloy sings, “This world’s all wrong/So let’s go where we belong.” Morbidity rarely sounds so jolly.

Hello Mary, ‘ 0% ’

Hello Mary, a three-woman New York City band, whipsaws through a raucous embrace of uncertainty in “0%.” It peaks with the drummer and singer Stella Wave screaming, “I don’t know! I don’t know!” But within less than three minutes the track also jumps amid spindly indie-rock guitar chords, a bruising one-note bass riff and an unexpected dip into folky picking joined by a plinking vibraphone — all while making a waltz sound feral.

Hermanos Gutiérrez, ‘ Sonido Cósmico ’

Hermanos Gutiérrez — the guitar-playing brothers Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez, rooted in Ecuador but based in Switzerland— set out to merge rockabilly reverb and undercurrents of flamenco. Their revivalism-twisting producer, Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, eases in a beat on their new album, “Sonido Cósmicos” (Cosmic Sound). The Gutiérrez brothers are fond of minor keys and subdued rhythms, and “Sonido Cósmico” is a waltz with a pensive melody sustained over perpetual-motion picking. It’s unhurried, atmospheric, a little melancholy and more than ready for a soundtrack sync.

Khalid, ‘ Adore U ’

It’s hard to tell which Khalid cherishes more: the woman who’s a thousand miles away but “still in my heart,” or smoking weed. “Adore U,” a glacial ballad with some ratchety trap percussion deep in the mix, is lavish in its praise and even more lavish in its vocal harmonies. The verses pour out how much he longs for her; the chorus vows that when they reunite, “We should just smoke, we should get high.” And the vocals just multiply.

Slic, ‘ Weeeeu ’

Slic — a Brooklyn-based electronic songwriter who was born in Venezuela — conjures a mercurial, sensual minimalism in “Weeeeu.” In a wispy but earnest deadpan voice, processed through assorted filters, Slic sings about a relationship conflict — “Wish that you could see you’re on the same side/You could feel right, better take off the armor” — while insisting that reconciliation is possible, with the refrain, “We could make each other feel good.” The track uses terse, mutating little synthesizer beats and riffs, stripped down but also fraught with inner tension and antsy momentum.

Nubya Garcia, ‘ The Seer ’

The English saxophonist Nubya Garcia and her quartet start “The Seer” at full tilt, with splashy modal chords and glissandos from Joe Armon-Jones on piano and hyperactive drumming from Sam Jones. Garcia joins the brawny, big-toned tradition of tenor saxophonists like John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, spelling out her melodies in broad, decisive phrases. Near the end, she suddenly steers the group into a bluesy, more relaxed postscript over Daniel Casimir’s walking bass line, perhaps to ease back before another track. The full album, “Odyssey,” is due in September.

Jon Pareles has been The Times’s chief pop music critic since 1988. He studied music, played in rock, jazz and classical groups and was a college-radio disc jockey. He was previously an editor at Rolling Stone and the Village Voice. More about Jon Pareles
