Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. Simonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

Trampled by Turtles released their first record, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004. In a genre steeped in tradition, the album stood out for its contemporary sound, essentially bridging the gap between the bandmates' background in rock music and their new acoustic leanings. Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) explored a similar sound, but it wasn't until 2008 and the band's fourth release, Duluth, that Trampled by Turtles received recognition by the bluegrass community. Duluth peaked at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart and paved the way for a number of festival appearances. When Palomino arrived in 2010, it was met with an even greater response, debuting at the top of the bluegrass chart and remaining in the Top Ten for more than a year. Two years later, their crossover appeal landed them at number 32 on the Billboard 200 pop charts upon the release of their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they began showing up at Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The official concert album, Live at First Avenue, followed in 2013, recorded at Minnesota's most famous venue. A year later, the band returned with the darker-toned Wild Animals, which bettered its studio predecessor on the album charts, reaching number 29 on Billboard. Countless tours, playing venues like the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 will see the release of the band's latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

Amazing show.

Considering Caamp was unable to perform…. The powers that be did an amazing job regrouping and getting Deer Tick & Shakey Graves to open for TBT was totally the right move! Both opening bands were super fun!! The venue at Treasure Island seems more streamlined and nicer than the last time I was there in 2019 to see TBT & Avetts! Our seats were great and easy to get to! Our parking was easy as well! Thank you!! We had a blast seeing our favorite band Trampled By Turtles! ❤️

So much Talent

Was an amazing show, incredible talent and humbleness 🤍

great show as always!!

great show by TBT!! awesome that Deer Tick and Shakey Graves filled in for CAAMP :)

Really missed Caamp

Shakey Graves was a great show, the Turtles were also really good. Loved the venue and Red Wing is a cool town. Was super disappointed that Caamp was unable to play.

Amazing music, venue and time of year!

I love TI amphitheater! I've always had a fun experience! This line up was really great in this place. The Red Rocks in Minnesota! Cherry on top with the beautiful late summer evening! Turtles are the best :).

Great Performance

Great high energy show, played all the great songs over their catelog. The only issue was a random popping sound which had to be venue related as it was happening through all 3 bands that performed.

Happy TBT Fan

We try to see Trampled By Turtles in Duluth each summer but this conflicted with our vacation plans. When this concert popped up, we were so excited that it would work. Even though we would have loved to see Caamp, Deer Tick and Shakey Graves were amazing opening bands. And TBT played a Caamp song in tribute to their lead singer which we'll always remember. The only downside was the extra restrictive bag size rule and a different, more subdued vibe in Welch than in Duluth. But any night with TBT is an amazing night. Their energy and talent is off the charts! We'll be back!

Very much wanted to see CAAMP

Trampled by Turtles always does a great show !! Was really looking forward to seeing CAAMP with them. But they still made the show special with Shakey Graves and doing a few CAAMP songs.

We were only there to see Deertick (BIG fans) and Shaky Graves. We left three songs into TBT. Not a bad venue, glad there were big screens. Not very amphitheatre like.

Love Live Music, but…

Absolutely love TBT and the Amphitheater venue at Treasure Island is amazing! The only reason I gave 4 stars; we were told to sit down during the Shakey Graves session. It was a little frustrating, and we are, by no means, rude concert goers. But- if you build a beautiful venue for people to enjoy their favorite music; make sure you put enough grade in the seated area so fans don’t have to sit during any sets. Otherwise, it was a fantastic experience! Great acoustics, sound, and large screens. Also great drink selections, decent bathrooms, and beautiful setting. Great job on the music Trampled By Turtles.

Baltimore Sound Stage was a great place to see a show. The parking allowed us to visit Inner Harbor for a few hours and was so convenient to the Venue. Trampled By Turtles were soooo much fun ! They can really get people rocking! We would definitely go back to BSS for another show and we are already looking to see where we can attend our next TBT show !

Sweetness!! Like most agree, TBT has vaulted into a crowd-friendly, high-level, multi-musically talented group.

Getting used to their CDs, its a necessity to see them live. Having the articulations with the beautiful banjo from Dave to the magjificant mandolin from Erik, far-out fiddle by Ryan, cunning cello from Eamonn, bangin' bass by Tim to the lead singer, Dave Simonett's great guitar and harmonizing harmonica...., TBT plays great music the crowd sings along with.

Beginnning as local Minnesota favorites, the Turtles have become nation-wide stars!!

TBT was incredible...as usual. They played one long set of new mixed with old favorites. Loved it! Also loved seeing Dave after the show. He was gracious enough to pose for a selfie. Thanks Dave!

I only have two complaints: 1) I wanted it to last a little longer. I was disappointed when it was over at 10:30ish. 2)I wish people would stop talking throughout the entire show. Don't they know they can watch the show, later, at home? It's called a "couch show." Look it up. Please shut-up and dance, people. Your chatter is annoying to those of us who came to listen. That is all.

Artist Info

"These dreams are more than paper things," sings Matt Quinn on Mt. Joy's infectious folk-rocker "Astrovan," a warm, yearning bit of road-trip philosophy that posits the existence of a Deadhead Jesus cruising the dusty highways of the countryside, nursing a roach on his way to only He knows where. It's an auspicious line from a band predicated on the revival of teenage dreams.

Mt. Joy started off as a rekindling of shared musical ambitions between Philadelphia high school friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar). Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam's childhood home, and together, with Byrnes' roommate Caleb Nelson producing, they recorded three songs and sent them out into the world, hoping for the best. "I knew I still wanted to write songs, but the realities of life made that dream seem pretty impossible," Quinn says.

Much to the band's amazement, "Astrovan" accomplished the impossible. Without initial promotion or fanfare, the song took off on Spotify, racking up 5 million streams to date. "The irony of 'Astrovan' was that song was really about being stuck in a life and wanting to have the opportunity to pursue a dream, and in an instant it gave us that opportunity. " Quinn says. Mt. Joy quickly transitioned from a part-time calling into a full-fledged band rounded out by Byrnes on bass, Sotiris Eliopoulos on drums and Jackie Miclau on keyboard.

Come 2017, Mt. Joy hit the road, and hit it hard: They played tour dates alongside the likes of The Shins, The Head and The Heart, The Lone Bellow, and Whitney, and popped up at some of the summer's biggest festivals, including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and Made In America. "We were put on some big shows very quickly," Quinn says. "The growth for us has been exponential - we've really just become a family that's constantly pushing each other and the live show to be great." They eventually caught the attention of Dualtone Records and began work on their debut album.

Steeped in folk-rock tradition and powered by the intuitive creative connection between Quinn and Cooper, the songs on 'Mt. Joy' depict Quinn wrestling with his own conscience, where the mundane and the fantastic collide as he processes tragedy, society, and love. Opener "I'm Your Wreck" describes "monsters in (the) closet, using up the wi-fi" as it cycles from its desperate, spiraling verses to its swinging, stubbornly optimistic coda, while the loping, plaintive chords of "Younger Days" meditate on a frayed psyche and the fear of choosing the wrong path. "Sheep," with its collapsing, hoarse-voiced cry of "freedom was paid in blood," is a post-Trump salvo on the responsibilities of the fortunate to overcome political and social despondency. And on "Silver Lining," perhaps the album's brightest moment, Quinn surveys the damage of hard drugs and the vicious cycle of addiction, as the song's melancholic sentiment kicks into its fervid, defiant chorus, all shout-along vocals and trilling guitars.

Taken together, the self titled 'Mt. Joy' LP is a startlingly open document, wracked with the anxieties and fears that come just as life seems to start working out. It's a natural reaction from a wary band like Mt. Joy - the result of a sort of professional vertigo, as they've gone from virtual unknowns to hot young commodity in little over a year. But there's a sense of hope underlying everything, girded by the fact that the Mt. Joy LP is an impressive, honest portrayal of a young band facing that moment where dreams become reality, and finding beauty in the exhilarating uncertainty of it all.

Trampled By Turtles

TRAMPLED BY TURTLES

Countless tours with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 will see the release of the band's latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

BENJAMIN TOD & LOST DOG STREET BAND

After dark country trio Lost Dog Street Band released its 2022 album Glory, bandleader Benjamin Tod decided it was time to retire the project. Tod, alongside his wife Ashley Mae (fiddle), had been working together as a band since 2011. "I came to terms with letting go of Lost Dog completely, which is how I evaluate a lot of things in general," explains Tod.

"Oftentimes when I'm trying to make a really hard decision, I go ahead and go through the process of mourning its death and accepting that I am going to lose it." But just a month after recording a solo project in January of 2023, Tod felt an urge to revisit the project one more time.

"I thought I was done with Lost Dog, but after recording my solo album, I looked over all the songs that I had ready for a new record. These were songs for my band. I had to admit to myself that I wasn't done with Lost Dog." That energy is infectious throughout the album, beginning with opener "Brighter Shade." Guitar melodies interlock with Ashley Mae's fiddle line, providing plenty of room for a staggering mandolin part and shuffling drums. "Each day I love you more," Tod croons, singing to his wife. "I could leave but some part of me would stay," he adds, before concluding, "And only I can love you like I do, and you dare to trade it all for a brighter shade of blue."

Though there was heartbreak at the prospect of the project coming to an end, its resurrection has meant all the more in this new context. "I definitely felt a good amount of grief and sadness that it was going to come to a close. I resisted, but then I accepted that it was going to come to a close," explains Ashley Mae. "Seeing it reinvigorated in a completely different spirit and light is very exciting."

That new direction began in the recording process, when Tod decided to swap out their traditional recording style of overdubbing parts in favor of recording everything live. It was an experience he was introduced to during his solo album, and found the process so successful that it, in part, led to his decision to revive Lost Dog. "We were able to finish the entire album in five days, and it has a remarkable energy to it," Tod explains. Take the title track, which closes the album. Mournful fiddle and strummed mandolin chords provide an idyllic backdrop for Tod, who sings with an unbridled passion. "Lord, I have survived," he reflects.

"Benjamin and I, both individually and together, have been through some professionally grinding and demoralizing personal times over the past five years," Ashley Mae explains. "To take a step back from that over the past year and realize, 'Wow, we held it down and withstood that, and we survived that,' was a really good, bright, shining moment. It was the high point during a demoralizing time." As such, Survived is a saving grace, a phoenix rising from the ashes. "This record means everything," adds Tod. "It just feels like salvation."

Report: Louisville '24 Target Jayden Quaintance Commits to Arizona State

Quaintance, a former Kentucky signee, is a consensus five-star prospect and is a McDonalds All-American.

  • Author: Matthew McGavic

In this story:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A major recent target of the Louisville men's basketball program is opting to head elsewhere.

Jayden Quaintance, a consensus five-star prospect in the Class of 2024 who emerged as a target of new Cardinals head coach Pat Kelsey following his decommitment from Kentucky, is signing with Arizona State according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowskl.

The center for for Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God Academy originally committed to and signed with Kentucky during the early signing period last November. However, after the departure of Wildcats head coach John Calipari to Arkansas earlier this month, Quaintance asked to be released from his National Letter of Intent.

Following his release, Louisville immediately inserted themselves into the mix. This eventually resulted in Quaintance taking an official visit to the Cardinals on Apr. 19 ahead of the Jordan Classic.

After Quaintance canceled a visit to Arkansas and postponed a visit to Memphis, things started trending in Louisville's favor, with the Cardinals even getting a pair of crystal ball projections. But Arizona State was able to get themselves into the picture, eventually securing a visit for themselves.

Losing out on the 6-foot-9, 230-pound big man certainly stings. He is regarded as a five-star prospect in all four major recruiting services, and ranks as the No. 7 player in the 2024 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite. He was originally a member of the Class of 2025 before reclassifying.

That being said, Kelsey has still done a great early job in the roster construction department since being named the UofL head coach on Mar. 28. So far, he has landed eight D1 transfers for the 2024-25 season.

Guard Reyne Smith and center James Scott are both following Kelsey from Charleston, while James Madison guard/forward Terrence Edwards Jr., Colorado guard J'Vonne Hadley, Washington guard Koren Johnson, Long Beach State forward Aboubacar Traore and Wisconsin guard Chucky Hepburn are also joining the fold. BYU center Aly Khalifa also committed, but will redshirt the 2024-25 season.

Plugable Thunderbolt 4 (TBT4-UDZ) dock review: A bit off the pace

Mark Hachman

Expert's Rating

  • Can connect to four displays
  • Tons of ports — no need to buy an adapter!
  • You’ll love the vertical stand
  • Some stability concerns
  • Front USB-A port doesn’t deliver the rated power

Our Verdict

The Plugable Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Quad Docking Station glitched a bit, knocking this ultrapremium docking station down. Its predecessor is a better value.

Price When Reviewed

Best prices today: plugable thunderbolt 4 & usb4 quad display docking station (tbt4-udz).

B&H

Plugable’s Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Quad Docking Station (TBT4-UDZ) offers the vast port selection and multiple display-port options I’d expect in a premium dock. But it doesn’t quite deliver where it counts, with stability proving to be an issue.

Plugable’s TBT4-UDZ is the Thunderbolt 4 version of the Plugable TBT3-UDZ , what I called the “Cadillac of Thunderbolt docks” at the time because of the plentiful port arrangement. It still tops our list of the best Thunderbolt docks . But there are very similar competitors now, as well.

On paper, Plugable’s Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Quad Display Docking Station (TBT4-UDZ) is very similar to the Kensington Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 Quad Video Docking Station (SD5800T) : similar names, similar features — but not similar in price. (Our sister site, TechAdvisor, has its own review of the Plugable Thunderbolt 4 & USB4 Quad Display Docking Station, too.) Kensington’s dock is priced at about $20 more on Amazon, but other retailers price Kensington’s dock significantly higher. Plugable’s dock is also remarkably similar to the  Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Multimedia Pro Dock , a dock we loved which also commands a $299 price tag.

Plugable’s TBT4-UDZ has one strike against it: Because of the similarities between Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4, you might want to consider the older iteration, instead. At about $200, Plugable’s TBT3-UDZ is about $100 cheaper than the newer TBT4-UDZ.

Plugable TBT4-UDZ Thunderbolt 4 USB4 Dock

Mark Hachman / IDG

As the name suggests, you can use this dock with either an AMD Ryzen laptop, typically equipped with USB4 ports, or the Thunderbolt 4 ports that accompany and Intel-based laptop. (You can do this with virtually any rival dock, too; Plugable just calls it out.)

Plugable’s TBT4-UDZ offers gobs of ports

Plugable’s TBT4-UDZ mixes up the port arrangement compared to its predecessor, though. On the front is still a microSD/SD card slot — though both slots are now rated for 312MB/s UHS-II performance; on the TBT3-UDZ, only the full-sized SD card slot is. Both a 10Gbps USB-A as well as a 480Mbps USB-A port appear on the front of the dock, with the latter rated for 7.5W to charge external devices. A headphone jack, the Thunderbolt 4 port and a power button round out the front, plus a small yellow LED to signal power.

Plugable has pushed a second charging port (a 10Gbps USB-C port capable of 7.5W of USB Power Delivery) to the rear of the dock, which I’m not a fan of. Trying to fish around the back of the dock to insert a charging cable is harder than doing it on the front, and most phones charge with USB-C.

Otherwise, there are four USB-A ports on the rear of the TBT4-UDZ, two each for 5Gbps and 10Gbps — again an improvement. They’re tightly spaced, but USB keys and cables juuuust fit. There are also two DisplayPort 1.2 ports and two HDMI 2.0 ports, plus the power port and a 2.5Gbps Ethernet connection.

Provided that you’ve connected the dock to the right hardware, the dock can connect to four 4K displays (using all four ports) at 60Hz.

Plugable TBT4-UDZ Thunderbolt 4 USB4 Dock

Physically, the TBT4-UDZ measures 7.7 x 4.1 x 1.4 inches., and a rated 22.7 ounces (646g). Like its predecessor, Plugable tosses in a vertical stand, which does wonders for minimizing the desk space it takes up. The stand is also perfectly stable from my experience, even fully loaded with various cables.

Speaking of cables, the TBT4-UDZ’s Thunderbolt 4 cable stretches a rather luxurious 3.25 feet or so, passing a rated 98W to the host — about 0.5 foot longer than the earlier dock, which passed a rated 96W. That’s about the maximum the current cables will allow.

Plugable TBT4-UDZ Thunderbolt 4 USB4 Dock

Plugable TBT4-UDZ performance: Stability is a question

Provided that you’ve connected the dock to the right hardware, the dock can connect to four 4K displays (using all four ports) at 60Hz. The dock does so by using a combination of the Thunderbolt port, plus combining DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 (High Bit Rate 3) with DSC (Display Stream Compression). If your laptop supports these, it should connect to four displays; otherwise, it can connect to the standard two 4K displays supported by Thunderbolt 4. (Note that you probably won’t be able to use your laptop’s display if you connect four external displays, and you’ll need to adjust your laptop’s settings so it remains on and fully operational when closed.)

I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that the rival Kensington SD5800T was manufactured by the same vendor. The port alignment is essentially identical, and the performance across multiple displays is too. The Kensington’s front-mounted USB-A charging port was supposed to deliver about 7.5W of power. It doesn’t. And neither does the Plugable TBT4-UDZ! Though rated at 7.5W, the Plugable TBT4-UDZ’s USB-A port delivers 3.8W, the same as the other USB-A ports.

Plugable TBT4-UDZ Thunderbolt 4 USB4 Dock

Only the rear-mounted USB-C port delivers 7.0W, as it should. The dock itself delivers 86W to the laptop, which is pretty close to its rated power.

From a stability standpoint, I noticed the dock disconnect from both monitors twice in succession, just performing normal office work. While playing a game of Diablo IV , the dock disconnected from both monitors as well as the network, booting me from the game. Whether you’re working, chatting with a colleague, or gaming, that kind of thing is disruptive and a bit shocking.

Neither disconnection happened on my normal testing laptops, though the glitches did occur with a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2, which includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Otherwise, I spent close to three days working with this dock, and experienced no other issues. (Just be sure to have your laptop up to date, as the dock didn’t deliver full 4K resolution with a laptop which needed to be updated.)

The performance of the dock was a bit less than I expected, across the board. In our streaming test, the dock dropped 30 frames out of 12,098 — a bit low but still average, and our 4K60 test stream was smooth. While running the PCMark storage benchmark, the dock dropped 38 frames — about double the Kensington SD5800T . The dock’s performance in the storage benchmark was lower than I’d like, too — 120MB/s versus 127MB/s. Is that a huge difference? Not really, no. But it’s still a bit slower.

The test I run where I copy a multi-gigabyte folder stuffed full of various files completed in 1 minute, 10 seconds, both while streaming and by itself. Again, the dock finished a couple seconds slower than the competition.

I didn’t have any problems with the Ethernet jack, the mic/headset cable, or the SD card slots.

Should you buy the Plugable TBT4-UDZ?

I’ve reviewed several Plugable docks, and the company has a well-founded reputation for quality. (A one-year limited warranty is included.) In this case, it falls a bit short.

I still think the Thunderbolt 3 ( Plugable TBT3-UDZ ) version of the dock is superior, because of the $100 or so discount. But I’m happy sticking with the Kensington docks as my recommended Thunderbolt 4 docking stations . I love the flexibility — who wouldn’t? But with competitors offering virtually the same thing, I’d opt for an alternative.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
