Moose Watching & Moose Safaris

Want to spot a moose in the wild we can help..

Be the moose. Feel like a moose. Know intimately the life of a moose. AND take lots of awesome photos so you can post them on social!

The search for Moosehead’s most famous resident -the moose- is on, and yes, they are bigger than you thought they would be! Maine is one of the few states with a thriving moose population, and in the Moosehead Lake Region, the moose outnumber people three to one!

Moose prefer solitude and deep woods cover in their habitat, so it is no surprise that the Moosehead Lake region has been claimed as home by these elusive animals for years.

An intricate network of abandoned woods roads provides countless opportunities to spot moose throughout all four seasons and professional guide services offer unsurpassed access to the mooses’ deepest woods territory.

Moose Facts

  • The Maine state mammal’s size is both impressive and intimidating by any measure. A fully grown male moose, called a bull, can reach 6 ft. in height at the shoulder and can weigh upwards of 1400 lbs.
  • They enjoy dining on aquatic plants in the summer months and tree bark, leaves, and balsam fir in the cooler seasons.
  • While clumsy in appearance, moose can run at speeds of 35 mph and can swim over 10 miles at a time.
  • The best times of day to see moose are early in the morning or at dusk, while the best time of year is from mid-spring through late June.
  • The flap of skin under a moose’s throat is called a bell.
  • Moose have no top front teeth.
  • In the Moosehead Lake Region, moose outnumber people 3 to 1.
  • Only male moose grow antlers, which they shed in early winter and re-grow during the year. The main function of antlers is for display during the mating season.
  • The first law to protect moose was passed in 1930.
  • After their first calf, moose quite often have twins.
  • Moose can only see about 25 feet.
  • Moose prefer shady, wet areas such as bogs and marshes.
  • After dark, moose are very hard to spot standing on the road high above vehicle headlights. Always remain alert when driving at night. A moose encounter can result in great damage to vehicles and passengers.

Popular Moose Hangouts

  • Department of Transportation Garage (DOT) –  Shirley  – Head south approximately 2.9 miles from the Visitor’s Center and on your right is one of the best places for sighting moose in the area. If heading north towards Greenville, as you drive through Shirley, be sure to look for the DOT sign, moose will often be seen directly across the street.
  • Lily Bay Road –  Kokadjo  – Take a scenic drive to Kokadjo, a small community north of Greenville. Stay on Lily Bay Road for approximately 20 miles and keep your eyes open for moose along the way.
  • Lazy Tom Bog –  Kokadjo  – Head to Lazy Tom Bog by continuing 1.5 miles past the bridge. Stay to your left, then take the intersection to the left and continue half a mile to the bridge that crosses Lazy Tom Stream.
  • Rt. 6/15 North –  Rockwood/Jackman  – After leaving Greenville you’ll find approximately 20 miles of the North Woods of Maine before you reach the village of Rockwood. Moose are often seen along the roadside, so keep your eyes peeled. Another 20+ miles of woods separate Rockwood from Jackman and moose sightings are frequent along this stretch of the main road leading to Canada.

  • Things To Do
  • Moose Watching

Maine is lucky enough to be one of only a few states in the U.S. that has a sizable moose population. State biologists estimate the Maine moose population to be around 75,000—that’s the largest concentration of moose in the country next to Alaska.

For many visitors, catching a glimpse of the iconic Maine moose is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They are majestic to watch, and it’s always exciting to capture one on film. Did you know that a mature bull moose can easily tip the scales at 1,000 pounds or more, and their antlers span an average of six feet?

Best Viewing Times & Spots

Moose can be seen throughout the state, but their population is greatest in the Western Lakes and Mountains , The Kennebec Valley , The Maine Highlands , and Aroostook County . The best times to spot them are at dusk and dawn from mid-May through July and again in the fall during their breeding season. Fall is also when the impressive antlers of the Bull Moose are fully formed. They will shed their antlers in November or December and new, larger antlers will begin to grow in the spring.

Because of their massive size, moose find it easier to move about in open areas – making it fairly easy to catch sight of one if you are fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. They can often be spotted along logging roads, diving for dinner in wet boggy areas, hanging out in gravel pits, and clip-clopping down hiking or snowmobile trails.

Moose Tours & Safaris

To increase your chances of seeing a moose in Maine, contact one of the outfitters that specialize in moose watching tours, also known as moose safaris. You’ll have the opportunity to safely and comfortably view these magnificent creatures, and other wildlife that might be encountered along the way, as you learn about moose habits and habitat from a knowledgeable guide. At the right time of year, tourists on Maine moose tours in some regions can spot as many as 20 moose in one outing.

Use Caution

While the moose in Maine are usually docile animals, please resist the temptation to approach a moose too closely. They have been known to charge people when they feel threatened. If you spot a cow with her young or a bull during breeding season, give them a wide berth.

moose safari trip

Because of The Maine Highland region’s rich environment and natural terrain, we have some of the best terrain to see Maine’s State Animal, our majestic moose. With so many in the area and so easily spotted, the moose has become a state symbol ever since it was put on the state seal in 1820.

Going on a hunt to spot them has grown to be a family enjoyed adventure. While it is not impossible to find a moose if you know where to look, the area also offers guided tours and “Moose Safaris” where you are almost guaranteed to see one of these uniquely beautiful creatures.

Having a well trained, registered Maine guide can be a great advantage to your moose finding excursion, whether it is by water or land. With a riverside boat tour, one can find the moose in one of its favorite spots, snacking on vegetation or going for a drink a pond. Having a guided tour can also increase the wonder of your trip, as they often know just how close you can get to a moose, enabling you to take the perfect picture. On foot the guided tour can take you to spot a moose the way they were meant to be seen. With a guides help and knowledge you are able to relax and take in the scenery while on the hunt for moose.

Two of the best moose watching spots in the state are in The Maine Highlands region, Moosehead Lake and Baxter State Park. In and around Moosehead, moose outnumber people three to one, and it’s no wonder why the lake got its name. In Baxter State Park, moose hunting is outlawed, and they are free to roam, which makes them easier to locate.

While these wonderful and state beloved creatures can sometimes be hard to find, that does not mean they avoid roads, so drive with alertness and safely when travelling within the region, especially any area that is identified as a moose crossing.
