Monos is one of the best luggage brands out there, known for sleek and simple designs and excellent build quality. The brand offers just one collection of luggage made from durable Polycarbonate, with six size options. The collection includes four carry-on suitcases and two checked cases, all of which are available in a dozen different colors, including a lovely pastel yellow dubbed Banana Pudding.

This suitcase is Monos’ international carry-on . It’s 22” tall, which means that most worldwide airlines will accept it as a cabin bag, except for maybe some budget and local airlines. There’s also a larger version of the carry-on available (24”), but that size won’t be accepted inside the cabin with most international airlines.

Additionally, both Monos carry-ons are available in versions with and without a front pocket. The standard carry-on offers more packing space inside, but the front pocket version is much better for staying organized and keeping items easily accessible.

The Proxis uses one of Samsonite’s latest materials: Roxkin™. It is a super lightweight and robust polypropylene material that bounces when you jump on it. This suitcase is going to last you for a decade or more!

Not only that, but these are some of the lightest suitcases in the Samsonite collection.

Samsonite Paradiver Wheeled Duffel

The Paradiver wheeled duffel bag is an interesting option. If you’re a bit bored with traditional suitcases, this might just be what you’re looking for. One major advantage of this duffel bag is that you can roll it around on the wheels, but you can also hook up the shoulder strap and carry it like a traditional duffel.

The transport variety is great because it makes the bag suitable for use in different scenarios. The softshell construction is another advantage of this duffel; it’s made from 600D polyester with a PU coating. The body of the duffel bag has excellent water resistance, plus the softshell construction means you get external pockets and compartments, which is a rarity on hardshells.

The wheel handle is single-barrel, so it’s lighter than a standard suitcase telescopic handle. It’s also stowable and has its own zippered compartment. The duffel does not feature any type of lock on the body, but the zippers are lockable and you could always use a TSA-friendly padlock.

This Samsonite duffel bag is available in two sizes – 22” and 31”. The carry-on size of the duffel is amazing because it’s under 5 lbs, so it’s lighter than most cabin suitcases. At the same time, this duffel has just under 50 liters of packing capacity, whereas most carry-on suitcases offer 40 liters or even less.

The luggage specs are completely worth compromising a bit on the color. The Maxlite suitcases are made from 100% polycarbonate, for excellent durability and flexibility. But they’re also very lightweight, with a carry-on weight of just a little over 6 lbs!

This TravelPro luggage features double spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, a TSA-friendly lock, and expandable capacity. Both packing compartments are lined with water-resistant lining made from recycled plastic bottles, plus they both have zippered dividers with pockets. This luggage allows for easy organization, in addition to premium build quality.

Also, with grab handles at the top, side, and bottom, this luggage will be very easy to pick up and place in overhead bins.

The Maxlite Air suitcases are available in three sizes – 21”, 25”, and 28”, at least in this beautiful champagne color. It’s worth noting that these numbers indicate the sizes of their cases, and you should add an extra 2” to account for the wheels and handles.

Additionally, the Ulisse suitcase is 21” tall with wheels and handles, thanks to the recessed design of the double-spinner wheels.

That means that nearly all international airlines will accept it as a cabin bag, making it a great option for people who fly frequently. This luggage also features a TSA-approved lock, a telescopic wheel handle, expandable capacity, and a built-in USB port.

Overall, it’s not the most special suitcase out of the bunch, but it is a good and affordable option.

Kenneth Cole is mostly a fashion brand from New York. Luggage is just one of the many different items they manufacture, and they’re a good choice if you want stylish but inexpensive luggage.

The Renegade collection is made from ABS plastic, which is one factor behind the affordable prices. ABS plastic is the cheapest material for luggage because it’s not very flexible, and it often breaks upon heavy impact. However, the luggage from Kenneth Cole has reinforcements on all corners, which significantly improves its durability.

The suitcase is equipped with double spinner wheels, a retractable wheel handle, expandable capacity, and lockable zippers. There’s no TSA-friendly lock on this luggage, but you can just use a TSA-approved padlock to secure the zipper in place.

The interior of this yellow suitcase features two fully lined packing compartments. The top compartment has a full-panel divider with zippered and open pockets, while the bottom compartment boasts an adjustable divider with two additional pockets.

Overall, this might not be the best luggage in terms of quality, but it’s certainly an excellent option for travelers on a tighter budget. Especially if you’re looking for carry-on luggage because the material doesn’t matter as much with cabin baggage.

The Mixi carry-on luggage is a great option if you want a durable suitcase that stands out with its features, and not just the color. This is a beautiful pale yellow that will certainly get you a few compliments, but it’s also an international carry-on made from polycarbonate for excellent durability.

The luggage is special because it features a wide wheel handle that protrudes very little into the main packing compartment. The handle tubes are along the edges of the suitcase, making it much easier to pack inside the bottom compartment.

Both packing compartments feature full panel dividers and zippered pockets for easy organization and neat packing. The suitcase also has a waterproof pocket for dirty or wet items on the top compartment’s divider. The capacity of this luggage is not expandable, which is pretty much the worst thing I can say about it.

Other features of the Mixi luggage include double spinner wheels, a TSA-approved lock, and low-profile grab handles. All the zippers on the suitcase are YKK, so you’ll never have to worry about stuck or broken zippers.

Another great feature of this luggage is that both compartments are lined with antibacterial and odor-resistant lining. The Mixi yellow suitcase is available in the 20” carry-on size and a larger (24”) checked bag size.

The interior of the luggage features an adjustable divider in the top compartment and tie-down straps in the bottom. The divider has two zippered pockets while the bottom compartment has additional zippered pockets, which is pretty good for keeping your belongings organized.

Overall, this set has some really good qualities, especially considering just how affordable it is. If you’re in a pinch and you can’t afford premium luggage, I would definitely recommend the Ginza Travel suitcases.

Especially since the suitcases are made from a mixture of ABS and Polycarbonate, so they’re far from cheap garbage.

All the luggage in this set is equipped with double spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock, a telescopic wheel handle, and low-profile grab handles. The two larger suitcases also have an expandable capacity, but the carry-on does not. That’s good in a way since it makes it that much harder for you to overpack your carry-on and go over the airline’s weight limit for cabin bags.

Additionally, the wheel handle is height adjustable and can be locked into multiple stages. This feature isn’t always included in more affordable luggage like this one, so it’s great that the Showokoo cases have it.

The interior of this luggage features two packing compartments with a full-panel zippered divider in one and elastic cross-straps in the other. The top compartment has two zippered pockets on the divider for easy organization, plus it’s worth noting that both compartments are fully lined.

Overall, this luggage set is good value for money, and the features are certainly on par with cases that are two or three times more expensive.

What To Look For

Materials can make or break a suitcase, quite literally. The best material for hardside luggage is polycarbonate or polypropylene. Polycarbonate is the most durable option but polypropylene is much lighter, so it’s up to what you are prioritizing. ABS plastic is neither ultralight nor extra durable, but it’s a common choice for budget luggage.

Go with a hardside suitcase if you’re looking specifically for checked baggage, but consider soft-shell luggage if you’re in need of a good carry-on. The materials aren’t quite as important for carry-on luggage because it doesn’t get tortured nearly as much as checked baggage, so it ultimately leads to a longer life.

Also, the organizational features of softside luggage are just great on cabin baggage.

Choosing luggage that is just the right size is important for ensuring you actually use the bag frequently. Carry-on luggage is great for air travel and short trips, but you need to pay close attention to the dimensions of the suitcase. Most airlines won’t let you bring anything taller than 22” inside the cabin, so make sure that you’re getting a bag that’s small enough to be an international carry-on.

Checked luggage up to 24” works great for trips under two weeks, while cases that are 28” and bigger are ideal for travels longer than two weeks, or just for multiple people.

Are there any luggage features that you don’t want to compromise on, except for the yellow color? Cabin Max Travel Bag

When I asked others for underseat carry on bag recommendations, the Cabin Max range was the response I heard numerous times. This makes sense when you realise that the company truly understands the plight of bargain hunting travellers and so have created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3 year warranty too.

The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson

Decathlon 20L Bag Essential

You might have seen the ‘ viral Ryanair bag ’ doing the rounds on social media but I think this bag is better. For one, it’s cheaper at just £6.99, and the shoulder strap is going to make carrying this bag a lot easier than hauling around a bag by just its handles. Originally created as a gym bag to separate your workout gear from your shoes, the two compartments work just as well for travel. Plus, all Decathlon products come with a two-year warranty, so while it may not be the best quality bag, you’ll be covered for your next few trips at least. CD

Antler Chelsea Overnight Bag

It might be called an overnight bag, but if you pack strategically Antler's Chelsea bag can easily work as a weekender bag. I travelled with it on a recent trip to Barcelona and was able to comfortably fit a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries. Although if you need to pack extra shoes, there's room for a pair of flip flops but little more. If you're a frequent flyer, this is a worthy investment – in addition to numerous internal and external pockets and compartments, including a laptop sleeve and a water bottle pouch, it also has an over-handle sleeve, making it an ideal option to take on a long-haul flight . The bag is made in a durable water-resistant nylon and comes in nine different colour options, which of course match their Chelsea suitcase range . Lossga Backpack with USB Charging Port

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from reviewing small cabin bags is that they can get surprisingly heavy if you fill them to the brim! If you'd prefer to avoid heavy shoulder straps, an underseat backpack is the better option. I can’t get over just how many features this pack from Lossga has, including multiple pockets, a laptop sleeve, compression straps, a 180 degree ‘clamshell’ opening, and even a USB port for you to connect your own portable battery pack to.

For the price, it looks good – the outer material has a shine to it which keeps it from looking too cheap. The inside material is less lux, but it’s practical nonetheless. Overall, it’s a fantastic bag for the price and one of my top picks. CD

Flight Knight Lightweight 4 Wheel Suitcase

If you hate the thought of hoisting a heavy bag along with you for your holiday; don’t worry. There are only a few hardshell suitcases that will fit the small underseat carry on bag allowance but they do exist. Like Cabin Max, Flight Knight are a company that have noticed a need for luggage that fits exact requirements and so you can opt for one of their suitcases which is the exact size for Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyjet.

The case has an anti-scratch water resistant outer shell and comes with a three-digit combination barrel padlock for added security. It also has a five-year warranty. If space is important to you, do note that the Ryanair sized suitcase is only 16L – meaning you miss out a huge 4L compared to many of the soft bags! However, what you lose in packing ability, you absolutely make up for in comfort and ease. CD

VMIKIV Underseat Carry On Bag

Most small carry on bags have quite a practical look to them, and yet this bag could easily pass as a casual day bag as well. I really liked that it was double lined, with several pockets on the inside and out, and I was surprised to find a padded laptop sleeve inside too – my 13” laptop fit in with plenty of room to spare. Other perks include the reinforced handles, a shoulder strap and a strap across the bag that allows you to slot your suitcase handle through it should you be travelling with that too.

The only drawback is that whilst it states it’s the same size as others, I couldn’t fit as much in as the other bags I tested. However, it’s a great option if you’re packing light and need a daily bag to carry your laptop around in too. CD

Lossga Convertible Cabin Bag

I think this bag is a great compromise between style and function. It looks good while having several pockets, a suitcase handle sleeve, reinforced handles, a shoulder strap and even one ‘wet pocket’ for storing damp items – perfect if you fancy one final dip in the pool before coming home.

However, the real standout feature of this bag is a little zip at the bottom that makes the bag even bigger. Try not to overfill the bag though, as it can get quite bulky in its bigger state which means you could struggle to fit it into the baggage sizer if asked. My top tip is to measure your bag once it’s full just to double check. CD

Take Off Personal Item Suitcase

One of the major downsides of using a suitcase is that the wheels take up a lot of space, so what if there was a suitcase where you could detach the wheels?! This is exactly what Take Off have created, meaning that many travellers have already hoodwinked airline staff by quickly removing the wheels on their cases before being asked to prove its size. CD

• Size: 45.7 x 35.6 x 20.3 cm (18 x 14 x 8 inches)
• Fits on: The dimensions are a fraction of a cm over the allowance for easyJet (45 x 36 x 20 cm) however there is a photo on the Take Off website showing that it fits in the easyJet baggage sizer. I definitely wouldn’t overpack this case.

What I Pack Every Time I Travel

I would consider myself a seasoned traveler [if the number of flights in the past two weeks [I think the # is somewhere around 6?] is any indicator, I’ve had my fair share of time on airplanes]. As I was putting away my luggage and travel bag a few days ago after returning home, I thought I’d share with you my travel ride or dies – the things that come with me no matter where I am going . Some of these are super practical – looking at you, ibuprofen, and some are things that simply make my time away more enjoyable [hello, pillow spray]. Regardless of where I’m going, these MVPs make the trip with me! Let’s meet the travel lineup, shall we?

• Mossio Hanging Toiletry Bag – I’m telling you, this makeup bag is awesome. I’ve owned mine for years [I use it every single day as it houses all of my makeup] and it goes on every single trip with me. It holds everything I need, hangs on the door at hotels if needed, and has stayed in perfect shape. Wherever I go, it comes. Oh, the places it’s seen!

2. Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes – I’ve been a Wet Ones fan well before COVID. You never know when you’re going to wish you had something to either clean up your hands [or your spills – I am a master wine spiller on airplanes] so always having a pack or two of these with me is crucial.

3. Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier – I always have a couple of these in my travel bag. Whether it’s after a night of too much fun, or if you’re unfortunate to come down with a stomach bug while on the road, these packets are a great way to stay hydrated and feeling your best while on the go. I just mix mine in a bottle of water and voila, done!

4. Passport Holder Cover Case – Now this I only use when traveling internationally and while it’s not a “necessity” it does make finding my dark passport so much easier in the bottom of my bag when it’s in this bright yellow holder. Plus, it just makes me happy.

5. A 2024 Best Read – I can’t leave home without a good book. Now, whether or not I actually read said book on my trip is another story, but in the rare times I do I’m always happy I have one.

6. 2022 Apple 10.9-inch iPad – Why may I not read said book you ask? Because of this guy right here. This is how I stay entertained on every flight I am on. Thanks to Netflix and Amazon Prime I download any show [currently hooked on The Circle] or movie and watch them all flight long on this guy. The battery stays charged forever and the screen is big enough [yet small enough] to give me maximum viewing pleasure on the plane.

7. Amazon Basic Care Ibuprofen Tablets – No explanation necessary.

8. Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) – The best of the best wireless headphones in my opinion. I stick these suckers in the minute I get on the plane, turn on my movie and can’t hear anything around me [including the loud engines].

9. Travel Cable Organizer Bag – While I have yet to use this personally, I just bought it thanks to Steph on the team for recommending it and will be using it from now on. It stores ALL of your cords in one tidy little organized spot and takes up virtually zero space in your bag!

10. The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler – I always take a reusable water cup to avoid having to pay for bottled water in the airport. Airports all tend to have water refilling stations these days and this IceFlow is my favorite for not spilling all over my bag! Use code: LIY20 to save!

11. Notepad – You never know when you’re going to get a bright idea while in the air [or need to make your Christmas shopping list, etc] so I always make sure to have one of our cute notepads in my travel bag with a pen at all times!

12. Etekcity Digital Hanging Luggage Scale – If you don’t own one of these, stop what you are doing right now and buy one. It is the best return on investment you will make when it comes to travel. For only $12 you can know ahead of time if your luggage is overweight saving you both the embarrassment of crawling all over the airport check-in floor and the money of shelling over an additional $100 due to being 8 lbs overweight [been there, done that]. Don’t forget: Toss it in your bag for the way home as well!

13. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser Facial Wipes – These are my favorite facial wipes that actually get all of the grime off my face and don’t leave my skin feeling dryer than a desert. They are so convenient to use when traveling and are super moisturizing which helps when you’re fighting off that airplane air!

14. Luka Duffel – Gosh, I love this bag. If you’re looking for a personal bag to take on the plane that can hold SO MUCH STUFF, this is it. It slides over our luggage, is easy to wipe down on the outside, has several different compartments [including a spot for your shoes], and so many little pouches to keep everything! This one is a winner [and yes, she fits underneath the seat]! Be sure to order the “regular size” Luka if you want it to fit under the seat in front of you, and use code YELLOW10 to save!

15. Terrazzo 2-Piece Luggage Set – Calpak luggage is the best I’ve ever used. I own two sets and it’s all I use – the wheels roll super easy and despite the constant banging around it suffers through, it still looks good. Bonus: Their different designs make it so easy to spot as you’re waiting at baggage claim!

16. Deep Sleep Pillow Spray – I always want wherever I am traveling to feel as cozy as possible and as much like home as I can make it. A pillow spray helps do just that. Just a few spritzes on any pillowcase and sheets and you’ll feel like you’re drifting off in your favorite spa, no matter where you’re laying your head down to sleep that night.

17. Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set – Another must. I’ve been using packing cubes for a few years now [see more about how I use them here ]. They keep everything nicely organized so when I arrive to where I’m going I can put my clothes away in a matter of minutes! Use code YELLOW10 at checkout to save!

18. Ginger Breath Mints – Last but not least, another “medicine” I like to keep in my arsenal, these are great for nausea or motion sickness. Travel days can take a toll so having these little guys on hand either for myself or to dish out to others has been a big lifesaver!

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Rolling TUMI luggage through the airport is like a status symbol; the brand is highly recognized for its upscale products for both business and leisure travelers.

In addition to its suitcases , it makes accessories like briefcases and backpacks and has components that make traveling easier, like an anti-slip strap on carrying bags and an extra hook on rolling bags so you can wheel multiple items at once. On top of that, the brand stands out for its unique service offerings, like repairs and luggage registration to help you find lost bags.

Some smaller capacity rolling duffels are great to use as carry-ons . It's easy to pack a bunch of stuff, but it won't feel quite as heavy when you can roll it rather than have to carry it. The bigger ones you'd need to check on a plane, for example, come in clutch for bringing on long-term trips and are easy to store in smaller spaces than your standard suitcase .

Here, we rounded up the 12 that do this rolling and duffel-ing combo job best. Most are made with a durable nylon or polyester, while there are other options that are a more functional waterproof or stylish leather.

Patagonia's Black Hole bags are beloved for their maximal amount of space for smart packing. In addition to that roomy inside, we trust Patagonia's recycled polyester ripstop fabric the most out of any of these duffels.

This is a real adventure bag. It's designed to be durable, water-resistant, and can take the tough terrain of both the outside and the tough use that comes with travel. It's no frills, comes in a basic black and a rotating cast of other colors, and it's designed with a 70- or a 100-liter capacity. Keep it simple, and buy one of these.

Cotopaxi's roller bag is great for an easy-to-use bag that packs a ton away. The 65-liter capacity is quite large, great for long trips or ones where you're packing a lot. This size is too big for carry-on, though, so keep in mind you'll have to check it.

The split case design opens flat for easy organization, particularly useful for using packing cubes. The outer nylon material, like all Cotopaxi materials, is designed with 100 recycled fabrics from pre-consumer waste. However, because of that tight, non-stretch fabric, it can be a little harder to zip than other more flexible duffels.

Samsonite's rolling duffel is a great option for work trips and quick weekends away. It's nice to look at, more put together than some of the rugged, outdoorsy bags.

It's standout detail is in the organization design. There are easy-access pockets for keeping your keys, headphones, and small items organized. There are pockets for your tablet and laptop, too. There's a charging port, although you'd have to buy the charger separately.

Bric's X-Bag 21 Rolling Duffel

For an easy choice, Bric's bag has fewer of the fancy components, but it has all the essentials. It's more of a true duffel with wheels than it is a soft-sided suitcase, so we'd reframe this as buying a duffel whose wheels you use sometimes. (It does use smooth inline skate wheels, though.)

Some reviewers report the handle as a little flimsy, but for something you're using every once in a while—versus relying on it like you might a suitcase—it gets the job done.

Royce New York Rolling Duffel Bag Suitcase

Royce's rolling duffel is an excellent luxury choice. The high-quality leather makes this as nice of a bag as you can get, and the waterproof lining makes it more functional. If you're the big boss, you can't show up on a work trip with a Patagonia duffel. Bring this instead. It will usually work as a carryon except for smaller or stricter flights.

L.L.Bean Adventure Rolling Duffle Bag

For a function-first bag, it's hard to beat L.L.Bean's gigantic rolling duffel. It has been redesigned in recent years to make the zip opening a wide U-shape, so you get more access to the gigantic black hole inside.

It holds a ton but you'll need to do the organizing yourself. Where other bags have convenient storage pockets built in, this is just a big single compartment. It's designed with waterproof fabrics, although the zippers and its seams are not, so don't go submerging it in water.

Thule Subterra Luggage

If you prefer having one bag you can do a lot with, Thule's Subterra luggage is a great option. It splits into two pieces, which you can take on and off as needed. As a whole piece, it might not be carry-on size, but split into two, it can function as your carry-on and personal item.

However, some reviewers report cheap-feeling handles and wished the removable back also had backpack straps, rather than just the single strap.

Rains Texel Cabin Bag

Rains made a rolling duffel, done up in its signature polyurethane-coated polyester. It's stylish, roomy, and ideal for taking places you might get caught in rain. Although it is waterproof, the design is meant more for the occasional traveling through light rain rather than explicitly designed for tough weather.

Briggs & Riley 21" Carry-on 2-Wheel Duffle

In opposition to a duffel with wheels, Briggs & Riley's bag is more of a soft-sided suitcase that is also a duffel. It stands upright and easily packs up as you'd expect a suitcase to.

However, the ballistic nylon (which is moisture-, dirt-, and abrasion-resistant) is durable enough for the rough use a carry-on can get. Still, it packs up like a duffel bag, and it has that signature big compartment in the middle.

THE NORTH FACE Base Camp Rolling Thunder

For something designed for rugged terrain, The North Face makes a big, rolling suitcase out of 100 percent recycled Base Camp fabric. Its capacity is big-big at 95L, which also means it can get heavy.

This size duffel is exactly the kind those wheels come in handy for. You can pick it up with gear, toss it in and out of vehicles, and roll it around when your arms need a rest.

It’s a common scenario while boarding a crowded flight: Flight attendants start Tetris-ing suitcases, backpacks, briefcases, jackets, and other items into overhead bins, trying to make sure there’s room for everyone’s luggage. But with packed flights on the horizon as the holiday season approaches, and more travelers trying to avoid paying checked-bag fees (along with the risk of the airline losing said checked bag), it’s essential for fliers to understand airline rules around personal items—and remember common courtesy when it comes to flight attendants, fellow passengers, and shared spaces on the aircraft. Here’s what you need to know about personal items for your next flight.

What counts as a personal item?

• Does a pet carrier count?
• What are the guidelines from major US airlines?
• What about low-budget airlines?

Almost universally, carriers allow passengers to bring onboard a personal item like a purse, backpack, or briefcase, at no additional charge. This item is in addition to the free carry-on piece , such as a small wheeled suitcase, allowed by most major airlines (except, generally, on the cheapest fare class such as basic economy).

Except for mobility devices (such as crutches, canes, and wheelchairs) and items like car seats, personal items must be able to fit under the seat in front of you—a specification airlines clearly state on their websites. “A well understood, and accepted by the majority of airlines, definition of a personal item is a bag that can be stored under the seat in front of you,” explains Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor , a Boston-based passenger claims management company. Radchenko also says that the exact dimensions can differ between airlines.

There are some notable exceptions to the personal item rule as well. Most major US carriers don’t count kid-specific items such as diaper bags, strollers, and car seats (the latter to be used onboard) as a personal item. In addition, most airlines allow passengers to bring extras—duty free purchases, food and drink bought after clearing the security line, and jackets, coats, or umbrellas, for example—that don’t count toward their personal item. And that’s where things can get complicated, especially on full flights.

“Often passengers will arrive with a suitcase, personal items, coats, and sometimes even shopping bags,” says Josephine Remo , a Copenhagen-based former flight attendant with Scandinavian Airlines. “Obviously, all of that does not fit under the seat.”

Cue a scenario sure to happen more often as the holiday travel season ramps up: flight attendants removing personal items like small backpacks, jackets, or shopping bags from the overhead bins and requesting owners to place them under the seat in front of them. “In general, passengers need to understand that the overhead bins are for everyone and no one is entitled to a certain amount of space,” Remo says. If you're boarding with more than one personal item, know that you'll likely need to condense your belongings to fit on your person or under the seat in front of you—additional overhead space is not guaranteed.

Does a pet carrier count as a personal item?

It depends on the airline, but generally, most major US airlines allow a pet carrier as a piece of carry-on luggage. But the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you (meaning your second bag may have to go in the overhead compartment), and passengers must make a reservation ahead of time, as most airlines have limits on the number of pets traveling in the cabin. There’s also usually an additional fee.

What are the guidelines for major US carriers?

American requires personal items to have dimensions less than 18" x 14" x 8". Good news for travelers flying basic economy on American: The carrier has announced those fares now come with one carry-on for free, in addition to a personal item, to all destinations.

Delta does not list specific dimension requirements for personal items on its website, but like other airlines, requires them to fit under the seat in front of you.

All JetBlue fares include a personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you and must not exceed 17" 13" x 8." Passengers with Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, and Mint fares can bring a carry-on bag (space permitting) that fits in the overhead bin, plus a personal item. The airline also specifies that any additional or larger carry-on bags brought to the gate will incur a fee ($65 for the first or second checked bag) and need to be checked.

Blue Basic fares only include one personal item. There are a few exceptions, however: Mosaic members; travelers on a JetBlue transatlantic flight; those who combine a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting); active US military; and unaccompanied minors.

Southwest allows a personal item for all passengers such as a purse, small backpack, food container, or laptop. The carrier does not specify the required dimensions of personal items, but states the item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Personal items on United flights must not exceed total dimensions of 17" x 10" x 9". United has an online baggage fee calculator to estimate costs to check a bag, noting that it’s cheaper to pay for these fees ahead of time.

What about personal items on budget airlines and low-cost carriers?

The personal item issue gets a bit trickier when it comes to budget carriers, which generally allow passengers one free personal item but charge for full-size carry-on luggage. Spirit Airlines, for example, has a range of fees for a carry-on beyond the personal item included in ticket prices. But, as its website notes, if you know you’ll have a larger carry-on bag, it’s advisable to pay during the booking process to avoid paying more later in the game (like a recent $99 at-the-airport carry-on fee we found on the carrier’s “Spirit Bag-O-Tron” baggage calculator ).

Not surprisingly, passengers adamant about not paying such hefty fees sometimes try to pass off larger bags as personal items. While social media is full of viral videos showing space-saving tips for carry-on luggage, some travelers take their packing hacks even further by stuffing travel pillows with clothes or making a small purchase in the airport and then using the store bag to fill with additional items, since airport purchases and duty free items are technically allowed by most carriers. However, travelers who egregiously flout an airline’s policy on personal items should proceed with caution, Radchenko advises.

“We have been made aware of instances where passengers have tried to pass off larger bags as personal items, which we strongly advise against,” he says. “Airlines have safety obligations to meet in terms of the size of bags that can be placed in seating areas, and they take these obligations seriously. Trying to get away with using a large bag as a personal item can result in passengers having to pay high on-the-day prices for an additional cabin or hold item, which they will also not be able to access easily, or at all, during a flight.”
