The BMW PGA championship was completed on Sunday. Shane Lowry triumphed in the 2022 BMW PGA Championship. The Irishman has won his first tournament since Britain’s 2019 Open. Lowry won the 2022 BMW PGA Series, the flagship event of the DP World Tour. Lowry was a couple shots away when the day began with night leaders Viktor Hovland and Soren Kjeldsen, but his birdie on the final hole, one by five, gave him a one-shot win over McIlroy and Jon Rahm, 8-down 29 (with a bogey) on the nine-back. Sunday put him at the top of the league for most of the day.

The DP World Tour's flagship BMW PGA Championship gets underway at Wentworth this week. Here is who's playing and how much money is up for grabs

Horschel waves to the crowd while holding the BMW PGA Championship

The DP World Tour takes centre stage this week as the flagship BMW PGA Championship gets underway at Wentworth.

Dating as far back as 1955, it is perhaps the most prestigious event on the circuit. Past champions in the likes of Tony Jacklin, Arnold Palmer, Sir Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Collin Montgomerie certainly attest to that, with one member destined to join elite company later this week.

Billy Horschel carded a final round 65 last year to finish one shot clear of Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Laurie Canter and Jamie Donaldson and overtake overnight leader Francesco Laporta. In doing so, Horschel became just the second American to win the illustrious tournament - joining The King, Arnold Palmer.

The 35-year-old returns to Wentworth this year in a bid to become the first player since Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald in 2012 to successfully defend the title.

This week's field boasts 13 of the top-50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, including recently-crowned FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy . The Northern Irishman, who was recently named a PGA Tour Player of the Year candidate, will tee it up for the first time since his success at East Lake.

Former World No.1 Jon Rahm is also present in the field and will be joined by this year's US Open champion, Matt Fitzpatrick . The European duo will tee it up alongside Norwegian Viktor Hovland , who is fancied by many this week.

The golfing world has been dominated by the emergence of LIV Golf in recent months, with the Saudi-backed venture and the two established eco-systems now going head-to-head in the courtroom.

The DP World Tour denied its members release requests to play in the inaugural event at the Centurion Club in June and issued a three-tournament suspension alongside a £100,000 fine to those that disobeyed. Ian Poulter spearheaded a legal challenge and had the suspension "temporarily stayed" - the subsequent injunction placed on the DP World Tour prevents it from suspending LIV Golf players until the outcome of the hearing, which is reportedly set for February 2023.

As a direct result many LIV Golf defectors are in the field this week, including Abraham Ancer, Sergio Garcia , Talor Gooch, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed , Lee Westwood and Bernd Wiesberger.

One LIV Golf member who will not be in the field is Ryder Cup hero, Martin Kaymer. The German confirmed he withdrew from the tournament because of "friction" between the two Tours, adding: "I don't need to go to a place where, feel-wise, you're not that welcome."

DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley confirmed that LIV Golf members will not receive any "competitive disadvantage" but are not permitted to play in the Pro-Am and will not form part of televised featured groups. They are also actively encouraged not to wear LIV Golf apparel.

Much of the UK has been hit with torrential rain and thunderstorms and with more forecast, fans will look to the golfing gods in the hope it won't disrupt too much of the action at Wentworth, where players are competing for a whopping $8m prize fund.

The BMW PGA Championship is considered the DP World Tour’s flagship event, and rightfully so given the list of past winners. Among some of the game’s best player to claim the title have been Tony Jacklin, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy. And recent champs have also double as major winners, too, including Francesco Molinari, Danny Willett and Shane Lowry, winner a year ago at Wentworth .

Suffice it to say, joining this honor roll is something New Zealand’s Ryan Fox certainly aspired to do this week. But the way he grabbed it on Sunday was particularly impressive. A closing 67 that included a triple bogey on the third hole then eight birdies on his final 13 holes—capped by a six-footer on the 18th—allowed him to beat Tyrrell Hatton by one stroke.

The 36-year-old had won three times previously on the DP World Tour, but this victory was the most prestigious. The Rolex Series event offers an overall prize money payout of $9 million with Fox claiming at first-place payday of $1.53 million.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship

dp world tour bmw championship 2022 prize money

By GolfDigestME.com To say Jon Rahm loves playing the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates would be the understatement of understatements. The 28-year-old Spaniard had two wins and a T-4 showing in his three previous starts in the DP World Tour season finale, posting a scoring average of 67.66.

It was more of the same this week, as Rahm followed up an opening-round 70 with a 66-65-67 finish to take the tournament title for a third time, outpacing Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots. In the process, he lowered that career scoring average to 67.5.

It was Rahm’s ninth career DP World Tour victory and fifth win in the tour’s elevated Rolex Series events. With the triumph, Rahm claimed the $3 million first-place prize money payout from the overall purse of $10 million. He also saw his career earnings on the DP World Tour rise to €21,834,859.52, the 19th player in tour history to break the €20 million mark.

There was another winner on Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy, while finishing four strokes back of Rahm in solo fourth place, earned the DP World Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy as the season-long points title winner. It’s the third time McIlroy has won the honor, but the first in a season in which he also won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

In collaboration with the DP World Tour, the PGA Tour hosts the Barracuda Championship at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood annually, which gives lesser-recognized talent from both leagues a chance at victory. While many top players are teeing up at the 152nd Open Championship, 106 pros from the PGA Tour and 50 from the DP World Tour went to grace the Tahoe greens.

The field now has been shortened to the top 60 and tied; the golfer with the highest score leads the club. Yes, the highest scorer leads. Unlike all the other golf events, the Barracuda Championship is unique. Instead of low scores, high scores are counted because it follows a Stableford scoring system wherein the winner with the highest score will be decided and receive a check of $720,000 from the $4 million total prize purse, as per the PGA Tour.

Moreover, the winner of the Barracuda Championship will also get 300 FedExCup points, 3,000 Race to Dubai points, and 27.34363 Official World Golf Rankings points. As an alternate event on the PGA Tour 2024 schedule, the Barracuda Championship offers a comparatively lower prize purse and OWGR points to the golf’s oldest major, The Open, which is also underway at Royal Troon. The latter has a total purse of $17 million with 700 FedExCup points and 100 OWGR points.

The detailed prize money breakdown is as follows:

Nonetheless, the field of the Barracuda Championship does have a great opportunity to use and gain a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour while securing a place at the Sentry, the season’s first signature event. As it stands, the Barracuda Championship is the lone event on the PGA Tour with the Stableford format, so how does the scoring work?

What is the modified Stableford format of the Barracuda Championship?

Unlike counting the stroke to the par, in the modified Stableford format, each shot stands for a certain point. For the Barracuda Championship, two points are given for birdie, five for eagle, and eight for double eagle. On the other hand, one point will be deducted in the case of a bogey and two in the case of a double bogey.

However, the unique feature of the Stableford format is that the players cannot lose more than two points on any hole as, after taking two strokes more than par, they can just pick up the ball and move on to the next hole. This allows the players to take more risks and earn better points.

After following the system, Mac Meissner took the 36-hole lead at the Barracuda Championship as he shot eight birdies in his second round and accumulated +16 points, his two-round point scores coming to +26, with a point lead over J. J. Spaun. Benefiting from the unique format, the leaderboard of the Barracuda Championship has many players contending for the $720,000 winner’s payout. Who will successfully conquer the Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood and emerge victorious? Stay tuned to find out!

2024 British Open payout: How much is this year's prize money?

The 152nd british open is on the horizon and here's a look at what the winner can take home..

Portrait of Elizabeth Flores

The 152nd British Open Championship is fast approaching. The world's best golfers are gearing up to compete at the Royal Troon Golf Club, a venue that has hosted some of the most memorable moments in golf history.

The British Open, established in 1878, will once again grace the west coast of Scotland at Royal Troon, a venue steeped in history, for the 10th time. The winner, in addition to claiming the prestigious Claret Jug, will also be rewarded with a substantial cash prize.

The R&A has announced that this year's winner will receive $3.1 million of a $17 million purse. A $500,000 increase from last year's prize money.

"We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men's professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability," R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said in a statement regarding the prize money increase. "We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years."

Who is Thriston Lawrence? Meet the golfer vying for first major title at 2024 British Open

H eading into the final round of the British Open, a familiar name sits at the top. Billy Horschel leads the pack after charging up the leaderboard Saturday with an impressive 2-under-par 69.

He's joined by a host of talents, some of whom are well known, others whose names have drifted away from the spotlight. Of the latter, none have proven as daunting a threat to Horschel's chances of claiming his first major than Thriston Lawrence.

Lawrence was among the strongest performers during Round 3, carding a 6-under-par 65 to put himself in arm's reach of the Open Championship title.

The 27-year old may be a relative unknown to the sport's casual supporters. But don't mistake his lack of notoriety for weakness; he's got eight professional wins on his resume, many of which come from top international competition.

Here's what you need to know about the 27-year old as he attempts to make a run at the Claret Jug in Round 4.

MORE:  Tee times, pairings, featured groups for British Open's final round

Who is Thriston Lawrence?

Lawrence is a golfer on Europe's DP World Tour and Africa's Sunshine Tour who was born and resides in South Africa. He currently sits 98th in the world rankings, 36 spots behind Billy Horschel, who enters into Sunday's final round with a one stroke lead over Lawrence and a host of other golfers.

The 27-year old made his professional debut in 2014. He's since turned out in the MENA Tour, Challenge Tour (South Africa), Big Easy Tour and, most recently, the European and Sunshine Tours.

He has eight professional wins thus far in his career and took home the MENA Tour Order of Merit in 2015.

Thriston Lawrence golf timeline

Here's what you need to know about Lawrence's odyssey in professional golf, from 2014 onwards.

Lawrence competed in the MENA Tour, a sort of spiritual precursor to LIV Golf, picking up his first professional win at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic in the United Arab Emirates. He took home the Order of Merit in 2015 after collecting more prize money than any of his adversaries.

After making waves on lesser tours in South Africa, Lawrence finally got his time in the spotlight, joining the country's top-flight golf competition, the Sunshine Tour. He started his Sunshine Tour career with a flourish, picking up his first win at the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament later that year.

Lawrence secured the biggest win of his career in 2021, outlasting his foes to take the gold at the Joburg Open, an event co-sanctioned by both the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour. There was some extenuating circumstances that made Lawrence's victory unique, namely that the event lasted just 36 holes due to inclement weather.

Still, it was a seismic victory for the then 24-year old. Other golfers to capture top prize at the Joburg Open include Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

MORE:  Meet Daniel Brown, the golfer leading the British Open in his major debut

Lawrence picked up yet another gem on his belt, vanquishing Matt Wallace in a playoff to take home the Omega European Masters. After impressive showings over the course of the season, Lawrence was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 2022.

Lawrence finished his breakthrough season in style, claiming top spot at the Invested South African Open Championship.

For his efforts, Lawrence received his highest placement in the world rankings (64th).

Another year, another victory for Lawrence. This time, he took the title at the European Open's BMW International Open, rallying back from four strokes back to vanquish Joost Luiten for his fourth career European Open win.

British Open leaderboard

Here's a look at the British Open leaderboard ahead of the start of the final round of the tournament. Billy Horschel leads the way at 4 under par.

He's got plenty of company at the top of the totem pole, with Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Daniel Brown one stroke behind the leader. Scottie Scheffler (-2) and Shane Lowry (-1) also remain in contention.
