Vancouver water taxis and ferries: see the city from the water
Docked with lithe white yachts at a private Yaletown marina, just south of the Yaletown Roundhouse Canada Line station, two little blue and white ferries bob on False Creek. Vacation travellers and locals arrive, asking about routes on the water.
Both boats belong to False Creek Ferries , a company that transports tourists and Vancouverites to different stations along the inlet until reaching English Bay to the west. From there, Vancouver's crown jewel, Stanley Park, is an easy walk along the gorgeous seawall.
The ferries travel throughout the day round trip from the Maritime Museum to Olympic Village.
Aquabus also operates on False Creek.
False Creek Ferries, known as the "little blue ferries" which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, is the older service of the two, running daily, year-round from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Routes extend from Kitsilano all the way to Main Street with a twelve vessel fleet. The route stretches two stops longer than Aquabus does to stations at the Aquatic Centre and Maritime Museum.
Fares range from $3.25 to $6.50, depending on the zones travelled.
Sightseeing cruises are also available with the company at 20 and 40 minute tours. Commuters can buy a book of 10 tickets for $20 or all-day passes, ranging from $9 to $15 for kids, seniors and adults.
Aquabus operates daily, year-round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a frequency of three and 15 minutes. It travels from Hornby Street in downtown Vancouver to the Village near Science World and back again.
Ticket fare is between $3.25 and $5.50 one-way, depending on the number of zones.
Passengers can ride the iconic rainbow ferries which seat 12 or the Cyquabus which seats 30. The larger vessel is stroller, wheelchair and bike accessible.
The company offers two mini-cruises. One cruise, at 25 minutes, is the "most popular trip," according to the company flyer. The other cruise is 40 minutes. It totes passengers passed Olympic Village to Science World and back again.
Both companies hire young vessel operators in their early twenties. One exception is Peter Nemeth, a False Creek Ferries employee who had worked for Vancouver's public transportation for 30 years on the mainland.
Despite being older, he can easily outmatch the younger generation's enthusiasm for the water borne transportation.
Once he gets talking about the job, he doesn't stop. His voice bubbles with excitement, audible even over the loud drum of the tiny vessel's diesel engine.
"I really enjoy being out on the water. I never get tried of it," he said. "It's a fun job, because 99 per cent of the people are happy. People have to take the bus. People choose to take the ferry, so they're always in better moods."
The ferry is cozy inside and its floor sits right on the water, placing passengers at water level. Light blue and white-painted metal frames support large stacked windows, providing shelter, a little bit of standing room and an excellent view of the peninsula.
On a calm day, gentle lapping waves, the unmistakable feeling of buoyancy, the cool ocean breeze, all make for a leisurely ride.
Some sights along False Creek include a trip under the Granville Street bridge, the floating village, Granville Island and the dog beach, where a gaggle of excited dogs poke their heads out of the water with their paws paddling vigorously beneath.
Passengers will occasionally spot marine mammals such as the harbour seal and sea otters. Two years ago, a dolphin pod followed a school of salmon into the inlet, which is considered a once-in-a-lifetime sighting in False Creek.
Seagulls soar in the sky just above the ferry, scouring for fish in the water. Blue herons perch on the banks doing the same.

All Aboard the Granville Island Water Taxi!
By voula martin | january 1, 2021.
Over spring break my in laws were in town and we were looking for something special to do with the kids. While having dinner on Granville Island my kids, once again, asked to go out on the water taxis, something they beg for Every. Single. Time. Sadly I had to say no, because we just didn’t have time but made a promise to come back in a few days.
So on a sunny Tuesday afternoon we again ventured to the island, which is consistently a favourite for all the Family Fun Vancouver kids as witnessed here , here and here !
Since I had been saying no for so long, I said yes with a vengeance and we took the full meal deal; the 40 minute tour of False Creek. To help offset the cost, we used a coupon from the Vancouver City Passport which is a wonderful way to save some money on local attractions! They also have a free admission for the Vancouver Lookout , 2 for 1 admission to attractions such as the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden , discounts on meals, and lots of other great ways to save while enjoying everything Vancouver has to offer. Their new edition comes out soon, so definitely check it out!
The kids were vibrating with excitement as we waited on the dock for our little boat to pull in. They were thrilled to bits to get a seat right at the bow where they had the best view. And for about 25 minutes they were very excited about being on the water. But then, well, they started getting hungry and I hadn’t packed snacks. They loved heading out towards the bay and seeing the Space Centre from a different perspective, were excited to travel under the bridges, and awed how large BC Place is from our creek side vantage point but by the time we started chugging back to Granville Island, they were ready to get off the boat. A quick gelato later and all was tickety boo again.
So lessons learned? Do the 25 minute tour (which is perfect for little ones) and never forget to pack snacks and drinks! Regardless we all had fun on the water and enjoyed seeing beautiful Vancouver from another perspective. Next time you are at Granville Island, try something a little different and give the water taxis a whirl!

Aquabus: A Water Taxi Ride With Million Dollar Views In Vancouver
While visiting Vancouver, my friend Nick and I went for lunch at Granville Island. After lunch, he headed back to his office and I stayed behind. The weather was ideal so stayed to enjoy Granville Island. Grabbing a coffee, I decided to sit on the benches and watch the view. After hanging out, I needed to get back to my friend’s place in Mount Pleasant. Rather than take the bus or hail a taxi, I rode the Aquabus.

the ride was educational and relaxing. We went to west bay and it was exciting crossing the harbour plane take off lane.
and the Empress hotel. There are lots of places to eat and just to sit and watch things around you.
It seems there is always something exciting doing here. There was a bicycle marathon and bicycle acrobatics the weekend we were there. The atmosphere was friendly and despite the crowd we felt very safe.
The Inner Harbour is a nice place to stroll... lots of activity on land in the the harbour. In the summer at least there are lots of buskers (entertainer for tips) and vendors of crafts..etc etc.. At night the lights on the Parliment building are special and the Empress is beautiful... just a nice romantic spot.
Nice way to start a trip from the ferry. Kind of a carnival atmosphere.
Old English charm the flowers and the fresh sea food.
