Travel + Leisure Readers’ 10 Favorite Resorts in the Midwest of 2024

F rom Tudor house properties that are almost 100 years old to business hotels with standout restaurants, readers loved these Midwest getaways in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024.

The Midwest is known for its friendly, down-to-earth people and warm hospitality, so it’s no surprise most of the resorts on this list were commended for their quality of service. But beyond providing a welcoming atmosphere, the top properties in our World's Best Awards survey were heralded for their location, food, and rooms — including one resort perched on a pedestrian-only island and another with high tea and English-style rooms.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

Our readers’ top pick might have been Deer Path Inn in Illinois, but Michigan had more properties on the list than any other Midwest state. The top pick in the Great Lakes State was Hotel Iroquois, followed closely by the Grand Hotel. Both properties are located on the idyllic Mackinac Island , where cars are not allowed. Instead, visitors explore by bike, foot, or horse-drawn carriage.

One reader cast their vote for Hotel Iroquois, noting “the views from just about anywhere in the hotel are just spectacular. Do, though, ask if the room has a view of the water, the marina, and/or to the east Fort Mackinac up on the eastern bluff.” They added, “The dining room can really deliver” — a sentiment shared by most survey respondents.

Deer Path Inn: Lake Forest, Illinois

The moment you arrive at Deer Path Inn, it’s clear that this hotel is different. It’s set in a Tudor manor house dating to 1929 and has an old-world charm that may trick you into believing you’re in England, not a suburb north of Chicago. In fact, as one reader so aptly explained, “the Deer Path Inn makes guest[s] feel like they are visiting the fine home of a British relative.”

In addition to providing a feel that’s unlike any other Midwest property on this list, T+L readers raved about the service, calling it “superb,” “terrific,” and “gracious.” It’s a popular place to spend a birthday or anniversary and is a surprisingly accessible home base for travelers who want to spend their days in the city. The train station is nearby, as is Lake Forest’s historic Market Square and beach.

It’s not surprising Deer Path Inn has long been a T+L reader favorite, landing in the No. 2 spot in 2023 .

Traveling Midwest?

Take a break from the road and reward yourself with a much-needed relaxation time.

Luckily, the region is a haven of vacation destinations, including various family resorts.

As a certified traveler, I’ve explored the whole of the Midwest, from Illinois to Wisconsin.

And along the way, before I knew it, I had already visited quite a few resorts in the region with my family.

So if you’re planning a resort vacation with your family in the area but not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place.

In this article, I will compare and review the best Midwest family resorts.

I’ll talk about my personal experience and insights I’ve gathered from locals and other guests during our trips.

To make the comparisons clearer, I’ll use the following criteria in rating each destination: child-friendly activities, family accommodations, dining, security, value, and location.

So, tell the whole family the good news, and check out my review and tips below.

Ratings Criteria

  • Rainbow Point program
  • Lakefront location
  •  You can hear the hallway noise from your room

Famously known as the “Newport of the Midwest” thanks to the numerous luxurious lakefront mansions in the area, Lake Geneva is a 90-minute drive north of Chicago.

Thankfully, its opulence doesn’t necessarily extend to the vacationers here — Lake Geneva isn’t reserved just for the owners of those mansions!

Midwest getaways at the Abbey Resort , Lake Geneva’s sole directly-located-on-the-lakeshore offering, are replete with a range of family-friendly activities and assured downtime for all the members of the family, from the youngest to the oldest!

The resort is conveniently located along the Geneva Lakeshore Path, a 21-mile-long walkway that circles the lake and leads you to the doorsteps of mansions owned by the “who’s who” of America.

You could also enjoy the resort’s many family-friendly activities, such as the sailing school, organized activities via the Rainbow Point program, virtual reality entertainment, arcade, paddleboards, bike and water sport equipment rentals, a swim in the resort’s indoor and outdoor pools (one of which is exclusively for the tots), or a walk along the resort’s very own marina, all of which can keep your little ones engaged for hours.

The resort also offers babysitting, cribs and child programs, cementing the resort’s spot on every list of kid-friendly resorts in the Midwest!

Don’t feel like the outdoors?

Lucky then, that the resort’s family rooms and villas all feature chic bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

Don’t want to go outdoors but don’t feel like being holed up in your room, either?

Lucky then, that the resort offers some great family dining options, such as the Waterfront Restaurant and Bar for casual dining, the Fontana Grill for fancy dinners and some great Saturday-night prime ribs, and the seasonal Gazebo Grille.

Don’t feel like any of the above?

Well, then, pamper yourself at the resort’s world-class spa.

2. Osthoff Resort — Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

101 Osthoff Ave Elkhart Lake, WI 53020 (855) 876-3399 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

  • Beautiful lakeside setting
  • The abundance of kid-friendly activities

Though simple pleasures are the way of life for the good folk of Elkhart Lake, it isn’t necessarily so in this Victorian-looking resort.

Osthoff is home to a spa of national recognition and a Nascar racetrack (Road America) with races, vintage-car displays and a specialized driving school.

The resort also boasts a culinary school, L’ecole de la Maison (very obviously French and therefore, very obviously sophisticated!) that offers classes to both kids and adults (for an additional sum, though).

For the non-fancy types, the resort offers water skiing activities, hiking and biking trails (at the nearby Kettle Moraine State Park) or the facility to rent your own boat.

Many a summer weekend can also be spent enjoying live music at the on-site lakefront patio bar and restaurant.

3. Thousand Hills Resort and Golf Club

Thousand Hills Resort and Golf Club

245 Wildwood Dr S Branson, MO 65616 (417) 624-7000 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

  • Scenic Golf Course
  • Spacious family rooms
  • Limited dining options

The resort offers a variety of accommodation options, in the form of suites, condos and standalone cabins, all spread out in various buildings on the sprawling property.

All accommodation comes equipped with fully-equipped kitchens, free Wi-Fi and multiple bedrooms.

The many outdoor pools, indoor pools and sports courts seem to promise some wholesome family fun time, as does the 18-hole golf course.

You can also explore nearby theme parks and water parks in Branson.

After a tiring day of fun in and around the resort, head back to your family room with a DVD from the hotel’s library for a relaxing family movie night, to end your day on the right note!

The hotel also provides cribs on request.

4. TownePlace Suites Bowling Green

TownePlace Suites Bowling Green

1818 Cave Mill Rd Bowling Green, KY 42104 (270) 782-4714 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

For a cozy, laid-back resort experience, TownePlace Suites Bowling Green is an excellent alternative to The Abbey Resort and Osthoff Resort.

Minutes away from the National Corvette Museum, Mammoth Cave, Lost River Cave and Western Kentucky University, the all-suite TownePlace is a great family vacation option, especially if you have a college student in the brood.

It also welcomes four-legged furry members of the family with open arms, making it a truly inclusive family resort (guests are allowed one pet per room for an additional fee).

What makes the resort a great family pick, apart from Bowling Green, is the indoor swimming pool, replete with pool deck chairs and pool towels.

Families also have a variety of accommodation options, such as studios (with one king-sized bed and a sleeper sofa or two queen-sized beds) or one/two-bedroom suites (the former features a queen-sized bed and a sleeper sofa whereas the latter features a sleeper sofa and a queen-sized bed in each bedroom).

All the suites come equipped with refrigerators, microwaves, stovetops, dishwashers, free Wi-Fi and a fully-functional kitchen.

Guests of the resort can also enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast each day of their stay.

5. White Birch Lodge — Elk Rapids, Michigan

White Birch Lodge — Elk Rapids Michigan

571 Meguzee Point Rd Elk Rapids, MI 49629 (231) 264-8271 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

The White Birch Lodge is the place to be for all water-sport enthusiasts; this Northern Michigan family resort boasts an almost-unparalleled range of water activities, from kayaking and paddleboarding to sailing and tubing.

Even better, water sports here are a family affair, with daily wakeboarding and water skiing lessons for all members of the family.

The resort follows a lodging system that’s tiered, with rooms to suit different tastes, preferences and family sizes!

You can choose from a variety of accommodation, such as multi-bedroom condos and smaller cabins.

The 40-acre resort is all-inclusive and meals are either served at the beachfront deck or the dining hall in the lodge.

Keeping the tykes and tots engaged won’t be a problem at the White Birch, with its super-fun range of complimentary daily kids’ activities organized by the staff (mostly college-age) such as art-and-craft sessions, scavenger hunts, soccer, basketball and volleyball.

For some wholesome family fun, head to the tennis court or enjoy some shuffleboard and horseshoes.

One of White Birch Lodge’s most attractive features is its popular tradition of a weekly water ski variety show put up by its staff, with a 2-tier, 5-person pyramid-on-skis being the showstopper.

One important thing to note is that to book a stay here means a minimum of a one-week vacation.

Given all that the lodge has to offer, though, I wouldn’t say there’s much cause for complaint!

6. Madden’s on Gull Lake — Brainerd, Minnesota

Madden’s On Gull Lake — Brainerd Minnesota

11266 Pine Beach Peninsula Brainerd, MN 56401 (218) 829-2811 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Head to the Madden’s on Gull Lake in “The Gopher State” (130 miles north of the Twin Cities) for sunny days of non-stop fun and quiet evenings filled with stories and the smell of roasting s’mores around the fire.

Run by the Madden family, this old-school resort offers guests 2 miles of pristine shoreline and a range of water activities such as tubing, wakeboarding, water skiing and a pontoon boat cruise for all naturalists.

For those looking for a relaxing time, the lake’s half-mile beach is the perfect spot to kick back and breathe in the fresh air.

There are also activities such as croquet, lawn bowling, golf and tennis on offer, so there’s plenty to keep you occupied and ensure there’s hardly a dull moment for you, as well as an in-house daily kids’ program (Adventure Cove) to ensure there’s never a dull moment for your little ones.

The program, for kids between the ages of 4 and 12, is included in the resort’s rates and is chock-full of dusk-to-dawn activities that will make the tykes never want to leave!

There are just as many indoor-game offerings as there are outdoor, with big-screen movie nights and fun games such as Bingo to up the healthy competition.

The resort completely understands that it’s not possible to fully wean yourself off the pleasures of the city, which is why they also have a world-class spa, 5 on-site restaurants, and 287 fancy accommodation options split between hotels, villas and cottages.

Hardly surprising then, that Madden’s makes it to my list of top Midwest family vacation resorts!

Grand View Lodge — Nisswa Minnesota

23521 Nokomis Ave Nisswa, MN 56468 (218) 963-2234 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

The hunting-lodge “feels” are complete in the Grand View Lodge , with its stuffed moose head and antler chandeliers.

Approximately 2 hours away from the Twin Cities, don’t let the stuffed-animal decor fool you into thinking that this is another Schrute farm; the Grand View Lodge not only offers horse rides and pontoon boats but world-class spa treatments, complimentary Wi-Fi and cable TV as well!

Catch postcard-worthy views of the lake and the resort’s immaculately-maintained lawn while relaxing on the whitewashed Adirondack chairs, or burn some calories at the tennis court and golf course.

The resort also offers a great kids’ club as well as a waterslide-equipped indoor pool.

In the Cote family since 1937, the Grand View Lodge is timeless yet in touch with the contemporary world, with a combination of vintage decor and photos and 200 modern lodge rooms, townhouses and cabins.

To further add to its allure, the lodge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, rolling fun and historical relevance into probably the most unique offering among all vacation resorts in the Midwest.

8. Big Cedar Lodge — Ridgedale, Missouri

Big Cedar Lodge — Ridgedale, Missouri

190 Top of the Rock Rd Ridgedale, MO 65739 (417) 335-2777 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Owned by Johnny Morris, the founder of Bass Pro Shops, Big Cedar Lodge has its outdoor theme of 60,000 acres of “family-friendly” and “laid back vacation” rolled into one, on Table Rock Lake.

For fishing enthusiasts, the resort’s 100 boat slips and matching decor are probable pleasers, as well as the resort’s half-an-hour-away location from Morris’ first bait shop.

Don’t worry if fishing isn’t your jam; the huge property is a wonderland of outdoor activities (land and lake) such as horseback riding, kayaking, hiking and water skiing, to name a few.

You could also enjoy an outing to the apparent “Live Music Capital of the World”, Branson, for a ton of live performances in its 50-plus theaters, ranging from comedy to country music to Osmon Family reunions.

Hello, family-friendly Vegas!

For those days of self-indulgence, head to the resort’s classy spa or enjoy some downtime in the resort’s log cabins and luxurious hotel rooms in any of the 3 lodges.

9. The Beacons of Minocqua — Minocqua, Wisconsin

The Beacons Of Minocqua — Minocqua Wisconsin

8250 Northern Rd Minocqua, WI 54548 (715) 356-5515 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

The northern Wisconsin town of Minocqua is the place to be for a true-blue North Woods experience, replete with your private cabin nestled deep in the woods on the shores of a beautiful lake.

An oasis of calm, the Beacons vacation resort in the Midwest is a 13-acre resort that manages to maintain its seclusion and privacy without compromising on its accessibility to the town.

Minocqua is within walking distance and is full of family-friendly places, such as Thirsty Whale, with its weekly fish-fry-on-the-porch Friday’s, ice creams parlors that serve vintage-style sundaes, or the free-of-cost water ski shows put up by the Min-Aqua Bats every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night.

The whole family is also sure to be delighted by Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

The Beacons of Minocqua has 81 units and guests can enjoy a range of activities such as volleyball, horseshoes, swims in the outdoor pool, story swaps around a bonfire or a movie night under the stars.

You can also rent bikes, boats and canoes.

When it comes to accommodation, families can pick among one, two or three-bedroom condos, a cottage, a studio or log cabins; most of these come equipped with spacious bathrooms, spacious bedrooms, internet accessibility, a private balcony that plays host to some spectacular lake views, televisions, a fully-equipped kitchen and a fireplace.

10. The Homestead — Glen Arbor, Michigan

The Homestead — Glen Arbor Michigan

1 Woodridge Rd Glen Arbor, MI 49636 (231) 334-5000 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

The Homestead is one of Northern Michigan’s prime offerings for Midwest family vacations.

Home to a stunning mile of Lake Michigan’s beachfront and close proximity to the 35 miles of immaculate coastline at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Homestead offers visiting families postcard-worthy views and quiet beaches.

However, it isn’t just about the views at the Homestead; families can have a ton of fun at the resort’s golf course, pools and tennis court, or even go kayaking and windsurfing.

For some time off from the kids, enroll them in the resort’s super-fun kids’ club while you and your partner enjoy a relaxing couple’s massage at the spa or a fancy dinner at any of the property’s 4 dining options.

You could also plan an outing to the neighboring Traverse City, the nation’s “Cherry Capital” and home to the National Cherry Festival.

Held every July, the festival is a family-friendly party replete with cherry-spitting and pie-eating contests.

However, don’t let that fool you — you’ll also find that Traverse is home to some of the country’s best microbreweries and wineries.

11. Oak Cove Resort — Lawrence, Michigan

Oak Cove Resort — Lawrence Michigan

58881 46th St Lawrence, MI 49064 (269) 674-8228 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

For an old-school, laid-back resort experience, Oak Cove Resort is an excellent alternative to The Abbey Resort and Big Cedar Lodge.

“The Great Lakes State” has another family-friendly ace up its sleeve — the Oak Cove Resort, a proudly old-school South Michigan paradise where “laid back” is the keyword.

Roughly two hours east of Chicago, the Oak Cove is one of the top family resorts in the Midwest, complete with an arcade, jukebox, pinball machine and a no-TV policy for some undeterred family-bonding time (before the panic sets in, know that complimentary Wi-Fi is still available!).

However, you may just end up not missing the technology, given the resort’s canoes, game room, water sports, paddleboats, bikes, kayaks and a heated pool, to boot.

You can also head to Paw Paw, closeby, for its beautiful vineyards.

Oak Cove’s success could be attributed to its gracious owners and hosts of more than 40 years, Susan and Bob Wojcik.

The breakfast and dinner, included as part of the hotel fare (the hotel is all-inclusive), are prepared using locally-sourced ingredients, with a weekly menu designed by Susan to highlight the local produce.

Stuff yourselves with homemade pies and jams, all made from local fruits.

One of the top Midwest resorts, Oak Cove can accommodate around 80 guests in its on-site family rooms and cottages (equipped with kitchenettes) and its offsite 9-room 19th-century farmhouse and coach house.

12. Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort — Illinois

Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort — Illinois

8700 W Chestnut Mountain Rd Galena, IL 61036 (800) 397-1320 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Obviously, the Midwest isn’t the first option that comes to mind when you think of skiing; if it does come up at all, it is, at best, an afterthought!

Not surprising, given the existence of ski-resorts like Vail or Aspen.

However, don’t discount the Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort based on this!

With a prime location overlooking the Mississippi, the Chestnut is open through the year to visitors but especially captures your heart and fancy in the winter months.

With its relatively steep 475-foot drop, 7-acre terrain park that offers individual and group sessions for learners of all ages and 19 impressive runs from bunny to black diamond, the Chestnut is a great option for a Midwest ski family vacation!

Constructed in 1959, the Chestnut Resort retains a vintage feel with its decor though its amenities are all up-to-date.

The ski-in/ski-out lodge, remote yet close to town, also boasts a classy restaurant and bar with floor-to-ceiling views of the raging Mississippi below.

To further sweeten the deal, the resort’s ski area is just a 15-minute drive away from Galena, with its Victorian buildings, bustling streets, quaint boutiques and gorgeous restaurants.

You can also start off the tykes with skiing as young as 4, thanks to the resort’s skiing lessons.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing resorts: which one is right for you.

Choosing the best family resort in the Midwest comes down to your preferences and their pros and cons.

The Abbey Resort in Wisconsin has a charming lakefront location plus a Rainbow Point program to ease your activity planning.

However, you won’t appreciate hearing hallway noise from your room with the slightly thin walls.

Osthoff Resort, on the other hand, offers a charming and picturesque getaway.

Its prime location on the shores of the beautiful Elkhart Lake sets the stage for a memorable vacation.

From the refreshing lake for swimming and water sports to the relaxing spa and wellness facilities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

But their popularity can sometimes lead to crowded areas during peak seasons.

If you’re a golf enthusiast, you’ll love staying at Thousand Hills Resort and Golf Club.

It features an exceptional golf course that offers both a challenging and enjoyable experience.

The scenic surroundings create a serene ambiance for a peaceful retreat.

The lack of extensive amenities and recreational facilities could be a potential downside.

TownePlace Suites Bowling Green is a convenient and budget-friendly option.

Situated in the vibrant city of Bowling Green, this hotel offers easy access to various attractions, dining options, and shopping centers.

Although they lack the comprehensive resort experience that some families want, its affordable rates and central location make it an appealing choice.

How I Picked The Resorts

As a local travel enthusiast, I have visited each Midwest state, along with several family resorts.

Aside from my personal experience, my review is backed by research and conversations with locals and guests in each destination.

I aim to provide a holistic review to help you plan a fun, hassle-free resort getaway with your family.

Our Resort Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Kid-friendly Activities: I use this to evaluate the availability and variety of family-friendly amenities at every resort. Does it feature water parks, playgrounds, and kids’ clubs? Does the resort organize events designed specifically for kids? I ask myself these questions whenever I rate this resort’s kid-friendly activities.
  • Family Accommodations: This is used to assess the family accommodations of the resort. Are the rooms spacious? Does it offer family suites with connecting rooms? Can it accommodate families of different sizes? Is there a crib or baby-proofing in every room? These questions are essential whenever I rate the resort’s family accommodations.
  • Dining Options: This evaluates the dining options at the resort. Are there kid-friendly menus or buffet-style dining at the resort? Can the on-site restaurants cater to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? I use these questions to assess the dining options of every property.
  • Safety and Security: I use this criterion to assess the safety and security of the resorts. Are there lifeguards at the swimming pools? Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I consider these factors when rating the property’s safety and security.
  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value of money provided by the resort. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the resort.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the resort is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? Does the resort offer airport transfers? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating the property’s location and accessibility.

As I stepped into Osthoff Resort, I was immediately captivated by the charming lakeside setting.

From swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the lake to kayaking and paddleboarding, there was never a dull moment.

We also indulged in a spa treatment, pampering ourselves with massages and facials.

For Thousand Hills Resort and Golf Club, it offered us a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational activities.

The championship golf course offered a challenging yet enjoyable experience.

And after a day on the greens, we relaxed by the resort’s swimming pool.

Similarly, our stay at TownePlace Suites Bowling Green in Ohio was an absolute delight.

We spent an exciting day at the nearby amusement park.

Packing List For Places To Visit In The Midwest

If you will be traveling, either by plane or by car to the midwest, here are some tips on how to pack lightly.

A  concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when visiting the Midwest. It is always important to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

his  unisex RFID blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with the RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves are  the perfect solution.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery . This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking selfies when traveling to the coolest places in the Midwest.

Hydration is so important when traveling. You want to remain hydrated throughout your travels to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble.

Then this  set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles  would work well for you as well. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. when hiking This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great

25 Coolest Midwest Lake Vacation Spots

Midwest Living's experienced editors create best-in-class travel, lifestyle, food, home and garden content you won't find anywhere else. We're loudly, proudly Midwestern, and we're passionate about helping our audience explore and create through award-winning storytelling.

Your perfect lake might be a pool only you and the loons know about. Or a serpentine reservoir ruffled by the wake of speedboats. Or one of the mighty Great Lakes, with beaches as fine as any ocean's. Whether you're searching for serenity or want to make a splash, we have the place for your perfect lakeside vacation. These 25 spots are each cool for a different reason, but they've got one thing in common: a liquid heart.

Grand Marais, Minnesota

Tucked into a natural Lake Superior harbor (110 miles northeast of Duluth), this town of 1,400 has a surprising arts scene. You can poke around galleries downtown-such as the Siverson Art Gallery — or head to the North House Folk School for classes (topics include boat-building and basket-weaving), films and even concerts.

The creative spirit extends to area restaurants, where chefs work culinary magic with fresh-caught lake fish. Grand Marais also is a gateway to the Gunflint Trail, which reaches deep into Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness .

South Haven, Michigan

Park your car in South Haven, and then say good-bye to it. This cute Lake Michigan town (60 miles southwest of Grand Rapids) is completely walkable, so it's easy to stroll between sandy beaches, fun restaurants, cool galleries and pretty bed and breakfasts.

Sylvan Lake, South Dakota

South Dakota's diverse and otherworldly landscapes draw travelers from all across the country, and this peaceful lake is worth adding to your itinerary . Rent a paddleboat or climb on the rock formations around this spectacularly scenic lake in the Black Hills. A 1-mile trail encircles the lake, affording hikers sweeping views of its landscape.

Door County, Wisconsin

On a jagged peninsula that's just 70 miles long and 10 miles wide, you'll find Door County, the "Cape Cod of the Midwest." Why the nickname? Well, to start, there are lighthouses (10, including Cana Island light, beaches (about 30) and forested state parks (5) along more than 300 miles of shoreline.

There are pretty little towns, too, clustered around glittering Lake Michigan bays. The county's 30,000 or so year-round residents work hard to pique visitors' interest. Even as residents welcome new art galleries and upscale clothing and home-decor boutiques, they haven't forgotten their past.

Folks still gather for evening fish boils; hand-laid stone walls still divide pastures; and cherry orchards that date to the 1800s are still carefully tended and brought to bloom. Just the simple act of eating a fresh slice of cherry pie or taking a bike ride along the shore in Peninsula State Park makes you part of the community.

Saugatuck, Michigan

One clue that this little Lake Michigan town (40 miles southwest of Grand Rapids) has an artsy soul: You'll see cool sculptures everywhere. Artists have congregated in Saugatuck for a century now, so it's no surprise that art has become part of the fabric of the community.

Some 40 galleries showcase local art and pieces from around the world. Many of the galleries are also studios, so it's easy to catch an artist at work. If you feel the creative impulse while you're in town, check out the classes at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts and the visitors' events at the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency .

Summer brings acclaimed film, jazz and chamber music festivals. Visitors come to enjoy those, plus all the things that lured artists here in the first place: boats bobbing in the marinas, white sand and gentle waves on Oval Beach, lush foliage in the trees and the ever-changing blue of Lake Michigan.

Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Missouri's largest lake has 1,150 miles of shoreline—and just about as many ways to get out and enjoy it. The lake was formed in 1931, with the completion of Bagnell Dam. Developed over the years since then, "the Strip" evolved into a colorful kitsch-central, with fudge shops, old-time photo studios and souvenir shops.

But the lake is still the biggest draw, and fishing here is fabulous. Nearly 50 full-service marinas can hook you up with boat rentals. On shore, you can play 261 holes of golf or tour the ruins of a mansion at Ha Ha Tonka State Park , ride horseback at Lake of the Ozarks State Park or take a lantern tour of Ozark Caverns . And with more than 100 restaurants, you'll have plenty of options to try during your trip.

Many of the city's biggest attractions (including Lincoln Park Zoo, John G. Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Navy Pier) are within sight of Lake Michigan. Chill out on a sandy beach, or ride bikes along the Lakefront Trail .

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Rearing out of Lake Superior, and surrounded by hundreds of smaller islets, Isle Royale National Park is a 45-mile-long bastion of protected wilderness.

It's not an easy place to get to. Isle Royale is buffered from the mainland by miles of chilly Lake Superior, and that has helped this rocky island maintain its near-pristine state. Though there were once summer homes, resorts and even mining operations, only a single lodge remains for visitors. There are no roads.

And for most of the people who come here, that's the attraction. Isle Royale is an outdoor-lover's paradise. You can hike on 165 miles of trails, kayak around the rocky shoreline or take water taxis to remote campsites. For travelers who want a little education with their adventure, rangers lead walks and boat excursions.

Lake Erie Shores and Islands, Ohio

No doubt, the family-friendly heart of Ohio's Lake Erie shore is Sandusky (60 miles east of Toledo). It's home to gigantic Cedar Point amusement park, as well as four indoor water-park resorts.

Kids will also love riding ferries to area islands like South Bass and Kelleys Island, looking for birds at state parks, visiting the Merry-Go-Round Museum, climbing the stairs in Marblehead Lighthouse , and, of course, swimming in the lake.

You won't feel as if you've escaped from civilization at Milwaukee's 15-acre Bradford Beach, but that's the point: You get all the fun and relaxation of a Lake Michigan beach, plus the vibrant energy of a cosmopolitan city.

When you're ready to pack up the towel and sunscreen, a thriving city awaits, with museums, shopping, great restaurants, pro sports teams and plush hotels . The Historic Third Ward district offers galleries and boutiques, while the Harley-Davidson Museum honors the city's motorcycle heritage. And throughout the summer, this city of 605,000 hosts one outdoor party after another along the lakefront, luring visitors for food, music and drinks.

Branson, Missouri

Chill on Table Rock Lake, take a cruise on the Showboat Branson Belle , then settle in for one of this southwest Missouri town's glittering live music shows. Silver Dollar City theme park includes craft demonstrations and restaurants. Branson's historic downtown is loaded with little souvenir shops and cafes, while Branson Landing is a posh outdoor shopping mall.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

How do you get around a 218,000-acre national park that doesn't have any roads? The answer is the main reason people visit this park on the Canadian border: boats.

To explore Voyageurs' 30-some lakes (Rainy and Namekan are the biggest) and find the solitude this park is famous for, you need something that floats. Some folks spend a day on a guided walleye fishing trip and stay at a resort in one of the shore towns of International Falls or Ranier (160 miles north of Duluth). Others motor around on houseboats, watching for moose by day and anchoring at a different island each night for sunset and a campfire.

Okoboji, Iowa

Some people might be surprised by this classic vacation spot 210 miles northwest of Des Moines. A string of glacial lakes covers about 15,000 acres, forming the "Iowa Great Lakes." Families return year after year, fishing off docks and hopping on carnival rides at Arnolds Park, a turn-of-the-last-century theme park that's as retro as they come. Okoboji Boat Works, a popular stop between the west and east lakes, offers a swimming beach, a playground and glass-bottom boat tours.

Wisconsin Dells

The nickname "Water Park pictured of the World" is a pretty good clue to the kid-appeal of this hilly vacation area near Lake Delton (50 miles northwest of Madison). Water-park resorts, plus old-fashioned amusement parks, top most itineraries, including ours.

But The Dells also has three state parks and plenty of spots for grown-up relaxation. Try to find time to see the Dells, the unique, craggy bluffs rising over the Wisconsin River like stacks of sandstone pancakes. Some of the best views are from double-decker excursion boats.

Brainerd, Minnesota

Just 125 miles north of the Twin Cities, Brainerd is firmly in the lakelands : lots of pine trees and plenty of kitschy Paul Bunyan fun. The shores here are sprinkled with resorts (from old-school to woodsy chic), shops, restaurants, state parks and trails. Tee off on one of the Brainerd Golf Trail's 11 courses (180 total holes), including Madden's on Gull Lake, or relax at Glacial Waters Spa.

Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

Tucked among north-central Minnesota's trees and lakes, you'll find generations-old resorts built around screen-door cabins and a refusal to gentrify. Downtown Detroit Lakes features a mile-long beach near streets of everyday shops, not just gift stores. Throw in simple pleasures like water-skiing lessons, a huge flea market and a county fair, and you don't get much more Parent Trap (Hayley Mills version) than this—and that's why people love it.

Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

These ruggedly beautiful islands sit off the shore of Bayfield, Wisconsin, in Lake Superior (80 miles east of Duluth). Only one, Madeline Island, has any commercial development. But that doesn't stop most travelers, who happily explore the other islands by kayak or sailboat .

Lake McConaughy, Nebraska

At 30,000 acres, Lake McConaughy is the state's largest reservoir. Reserve a campsite at "Big Mac" and while the weekend away on its white sand beaches and calm waters.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Cars aren't allowed on this idyllic island located between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas (120 miles northeast of Traverse City). Instead, horse-drawn carriages meet visitors at the ferry docks, and bike rentals are plentiful, perfect for burning off the island's famous fudge.

Many people stay in town, but they're missing out on one of the island's real treasures—peaceful lake-view hikes in gorgeous Mackinac Island State Park .

Minocqua, Wisconsin

This northern Wisconsin resort town (165 miles northwest of Green Bay) has all the ingredients of a great family vacation , including more than 3,000 lakes in Vilas and Oneida counties. Minocqua's quieter lakes are perfect for swimming lessons and sand castles. Meanwhile, you can zip across big Lake Minocqua on a wakeboard or check out the Min-Aqua Bats ski team .

Kids love cheering at Scheer's Lumberjack Show or digging into an ice cream cone at Hoggie Doggie's . And the lodgings here understand what a family lake vacation is all about-no one minds a little sand tracked in.

Traverse City, Michigan

During the summertime National Cherry Festival , Traverse City's population swells from 14,000 to more than 500,000. What's amazing, though, is that this gentrified vacation spot (140 miles north of Grand Rapids) feels even more like a small town during the fest. Lake Michigan glitters behind a packed lineup of parades, country-fair-style contests and teddy-bear teas. People here love their town-and they love to share it, even with huge crowds. The National Cherry Festival draws up to 500,000 visitors. Get our Traverse Area Trip Guide.

Minneapolis/Saint Paul

The Twin Cities beckon adventurous travelers year-round, especially in summer months, when lake life is at its finest. Locals love to bike, jog and skate through the parks and gardens linked by Minneapolis' Chain of Lakes . In Saint Paul , Lake Como has a conservatory and zoo.

East Tawas and Tawas City, Michigan

Spending a weekend in this pair of Lake Huron beach towns feels a little like dropping into the 1950s. Several generations of Detroiters, many of them autoworkers, have come to the cottage resorts along these sugar-sand shores for affordable, close-to-home family vacations. In Tawas Point State Park , kids build sand castles and splash in jade-color shallows. Sandy Hook Nature Trail winds past meadows of wildflowers and marshes teeming with birds. The Tawas Point Lighthouse stands over a 200-site campground.

A bike path connects the park to nearby East Tawas and Tawas City (180 miles north of Detroit). The lineup in East Tawas is simple but fun: souvenir and gift shops, a 60-year-old ice cream parlor and the 1910 Family Theater, which still shows flicks. Put away your cell phone, squint a little, and the decades just melt away.

Petoskey, Michigan

Petoskey sits 70 miles northeast of Traverse City, near the top of Michigan's "mitten." Around town, you'll find murals, galleries and the Crooked Tree Arts Center , a hub for exhibitions and art classes of every stripe. It even has a 235-seat theater. Be sure to take a drive along US-31 for shimmering blue Lake Michigan scenery.

Racine, Wisconsin

Along Lake Michigan, Racine's North Beach (20 miles south of Milwaukee ) is one of the nicest urban public beaches you'll see—clean, white sand, with easy access to downtown's shops and restaurants.

The accolade, part of the magazine's "World's Best Awards" for 2024, marks the fifth time the historic, 57-room Lake Forest hotel nabbed the top spot, the release went on to say.

It's not the only award The Deer Path won for 2024. According to the release, the hotel earned the No. 6 spot on Travel + Leisure's list of " Best Resorts in the Continental U.S. " It also landed at No. 66 in the magazine's report on " Best Hotels in the World " for 2024 -- one of only 16 U.S. hotels to make the list of 100.

Voting for the "World's Best" awards comes from reader surveys, editors said. For 2024, more than 186,000 readers weighed in, with approximately 700,000 votes across 8,700 properties.

According to magazine, hotels were first classified based on their locations and amenities. They were then rated on criteria including rooms and facilities, service, food, value and more.

From there, readers could rate hotels based on each characteristic, ranging from "excellent" to "poor," editors said.

According to the results, T he Deer Path Inn earned a near-prefect reader score of 98.11. More than five points behind the Deer Path was Larsmont Cottages on Lake Superior, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, with a reader score of 93.75.

"The moment you arrive at Deer Path Inn, it’s clear that this hotel is different," the hotel's winning entry reads. "It’s set in a Tudor manor house dating to 1929 and has an old-world charm that may trick you into believing you’re in England, not a suburb north of Chicago. In fact, as one reader so aptly explained, 'the Deer Path Inn makes guest[s] feel like they are visiting the fine home of a British relative.'"

Last year, Deer Path manager James Barnett told NBC Chicago that nearly half of the the hotel's reservations come from Illinois zip codes.

“You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re on vacation,” said Stephie Blum, a Northbrook resident who visited the Inn in October. "It always makes me feel like I’m away, even when I’m not. They know your name, they greet you when you come in."

That personal touch is part of the art of Innkeeping, Barnett said.

At the Inn, life slows down: it’s a place where dinner reservations are only taken over the phone, which leads to better communication with guests, Barnett said. Details and personal connections matter – all the way down to the rubber ducks that are hand-placed on a guest’s bathtub tray before they arrive.

“We want to make it feel like it is a home away from home, so we try to learn about guests, and put special items in their room that make them feel like they’re still at their own home,” Guest Services Manager Shelby Trkla said.

The feeling of hospitality also extends into The Deer Path's charming room packages, which range from a "Local's Only" neighborhood scavenger hunt, to "A Good Book & A Spot of Tea" -- a generous package that includes bedtime tea service with English-inspired bedtime snacks, a lavender mocktail, and a curated “Sleepy Sips” playlist, books selected by the Lake Forest Book Store and more.

This summer, The Deer Path Inn's programming extends to a series of British picnic-inspired "Summer Soirees " as the hotel celebrates its 95th anniversary, a spokesperson said.

“There's a thoughtfulness, and more attention,” Barnett added. “That comes back to the idea of an Inn – a warm, welcoming refuge. A smaller place, with personal service. That’s what people crave when they come here. It’s a step away from the everyday.”

Extreme heat is changing where and when we vacation

Suitcase, sunglasses and passport encased in a melting ice block.

Cathy Balestriere was expecting “especially low” bookings last month at Crane’s Beach House, the boutique hotel she manages in Delray Beach, Florida. Instead, they jumped 12% from the year before.

“It feels like a miracle based on where we were sitting just a few weeks ago,” she said.

It’s not a miracle. It’s the weather.

The surge coincided with a sweltering mid-June heat wave across the Midwest and the Northeast, putting over 80 million people under heat alerts — the latest run of unseasonably extreme temperatures fueled by a global climate that is warming at a record pace .

There is no question that we are seeing a growing preference for destinations with more comfortable summer temperatures.

Jesse Neugarten, CEO of Dollar Flight Club

Florida might not be the first destination that comes to mind for people looking to beat the heat, but it’s where some headed after their hometowns became just as sweltering.

This time of year, most guests at Crane’s are in-state or regional travelers, Balestriere said. But many of the surprise last-minute bookings came from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas. Delray Beach has been hot, too, but visitors to the hotel “can at least enjoy the ocean breeze and access to the beach and refreshing pools,” she said.

It’s a similar story at the Lake Nona Wave Hotel in Orlando, where reservations soared 45% in the past three weeks compared with the year before, largely from the Northeast and Texas.

“We have had a couple of guests mention while they are checking in that the heat at home is unbearable,” sales and marketing director James Tattersall said.

Crane's Beach House Boutique Hotel Luxury Villas pool with umbrellas and foliage in Delray Beach, Fla.

“Snowbirds” typically head south to Florida and other balmier states in the winter and spring, creating a high season there when it’s frigid up north. But Crane’s Beach House now sees a growing opportunity in warmer months. It has already shifted its seasonal editorial calendar, Google ad strategy and newsletter messaging to capture more of the off-season demand, Balestriere said.

It’s part of a broader change that has been underway for years as tourist hot spots adapt to shifting demand tied to evolving seasonal weather.

While not every place is feeling an impact in the same way, or at all, “there is no question that we are seeing a growing preference for destinations with more comfortable summer temperatures alongside rising global temperatures,” said Jesse Neugarten, founder and CEO of Dollar Flight Club, a travel deal alert service.

From May to June, the platform had a 31% surge in flight bookings and interest from Northern cities like New York and Boston to destinations in Florida, he said, “where travelers are looking for relief from heat waves.”

Scorching weather at home is also pushing people toward cooler climes abroad. While hotel bookings in Italy — a longtime summer hot spot — are up a modest 3% since last year, “it’s Scandinavia that is having a moment,” researchers at the Virtuoso luxury travel network said in a recent report.

Bookings in the region have surged 25% since last year, with even steeper 49% and 47% increases in Iceland and Sweden, respectively. Even the Netherlands, where authorities have tried to reduce tourist volumes , is seeing 33% higher hotel demand this season, Virtuoso found.

Andy and Cathy Raines on vacation.

“I decided I had enough of Washington, D.C., summers,” said Andy Knestaut, 59, a retiree who was considering a trip with his wife somewhere in South America before they opted for northern Europe. “We chose Copenhagen and added two Baltic countries. We’ll go from late July to late August.”

Some parts of the continent are getting so hot during the summer that the typical high season is getting longer, said Rebecca Masri, founder and CEO of Little Emperors, a private members luxury hotel club.

“With the weather in southern Europe staying warm, booking trends are shifting to September, October and even November,” she said, as some hotels and resorts that usually close at the end of the summer extend their operations. “These months are becoming the new peak season.”

Consumers will increasingly see those shifts reflected in pricing, said Chris Lafakis, a director at Moody’s Analytics.

“You won’t have to be rich to vacation, but it’s going to be more expensive to travel to the more favorable destinations,” he said. “Those with the means to do so will be able to, and those that don’t will unfortunately not have as many options to fall back on.”

With the weather in southern Europe staying warm, booking trends are shifting to September, October and even November.

Rebecca Masri, CEO of Little Emperors

As airlines have added capacity, domestic and international airfares have fallen by double-digit percentages this July Fourth holiday week compared with last year’s, according to booking platform Hopper, despite record expected travel volumes . But while average hotel room rates in some cooler northern European countries have stabilized since last year’s surge, they’re climbing in popular areas — up 18% in Iceland and 47% in Norway, Virtuoso said.

Weather-driven shifts in travel patterns will create economic winners and losers, Lafakis said. “Probably 20% to 30% of the overall damage to the economy from the heat is because of less travel tourism,” he said. As seasonal temperatures soar, would-be visitors “may go somewhere else or choose not to go at all.”

Some industry experts aren’t so worried.

During hot weather, “travelers will usually change their behavior rather than cancel a trip,” said Tiffany Townsend, a spokesperson for New York City Tourism and Conventions. “They might visit more museums and indoor attractions or do more shopping” while it’s scorching outside and schedule outdoor activities early or late in the day.

Heather Dickie, 69, a Texas-based marketing consultant, said her travel itinerary is still in flux, but she said she needs a break from the heat. “If I can get out of Dallas,” where temperatures have already hit triple digits , “Alaska is sounding good,” she said.

But she’s more likely to head about 650 miles “up the road a bit” toward Taos, New Mexico, for the relative reprieve of highs in the mid-80s. “I have friends in that area,” she said, “and am looking at late July or August for a nice, cool getaway.”

'Slow-moving disaster': Midwest rivers flood; Rapidan Dam threatened

travel resorts in the midwest

A Minnesota dam partially failed, an Iowa levee breached, interstates shut down and multiple rivers were awash over their banks Tuesday after a swath of the nation's northern tier was blasted with more than a month's rainfall in a few days, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for parts of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota, warning that rivers will continue to crest through Wednesday. Showers, storms and locally heavy rainfall were possible and could "quickly become severe" with hail of 2 inch diameter and wind gusts to 70 mph.

In Minnesota, the Rapidan Dam  near Mankato had experienced "partial failure" late Monday. But the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office said the dam was still intact and there were no current plans for a mass evacuation. A portion of the Blue Earth River flow has diverted around the west side of the dam and water continues to flow.

Alex Sosnowski, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, says the fate of the dam could depend on the whim of the weather pattern. More rounds of major storms will slam the region in coming days, but some areas will be overwhelmed by rain while others may draw little precipitation. More than a dozen river gauges have already broken all-time records, some by a startling 7 feet.

"Some of this rainfall and flooding is historic," Sosnowski told USA TODAY. "Some of these place have had a foot of rain or whatever in three or four days. That is two months of rain. Even in a drought you will have problems with that much water."

Historic floods: Dam on the brink of failure; heat wave bakes Central US

Developments:

∎ Intense heat is rolling through parts of the South. The weather service in Memphis said most of the mid-South will see heat indices at or above 105 degrees

∎ Temperatures Wednesday will peak within a few degrees of 100 from eastern Virginia to Maryland, Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, AccuWeather said.

Midwest pattern similar to deadly spring storms in Houston

Sosnowski said the weather pattern is eerily similar to the pattern that set up over parts of Texas and Louisiana in the spring. Catastrophic flooding and winds of up to 100 mph in Houston left eight people dead and almost 1 millions homes and businesses without power, many for several days. Houston was on the northern edge of a heat dome centered in Mexico; the U.S. Upper Midwest is on the northern edge of a heat dome centered in the U.S., Sosnowski said. It will effect the region for the next couple weeks.

Major flooding is underway or will happen shortly in several rivers, the Big Sioux, Little Sioux, Des Moines, West Fork Des Moines, Vermillion, Cannon, James, Rock, Cedar and Minnesota among them. Several stations could set record high water levels, Sosnowski said. It could take several weeks for the water to then cycle through parts of the Mississippi River, he said

"We could see major flooding there, too," Sosnowski said. "River flooding is a slow-moving disaster."

Rapidan Dam calamity draws onlookers

In Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz said state agencies are in close contact with Blue Earth County and other local officials regarding the Rapidan Dam. "Emergency management is on the ground and acting quickly to ensure the safety of Minnesotans as the situation develops," Walz said.

The dam has become a magnet for the curious. The sheriff's office issued a warning that "safety is our No. 1 priority" and said those interested in viewing the dam must park outside barricades and walk along a coned-off shoulder to view the dam.

Disaster declared in Iowa

Some parts of Iowa have received more than 15 inches of rain , causing water levels to surge and levees to fail. In much of northwest Iowa, rivers reached levels never before recorded. Residents of homes already flooded are starting to clean up while those downstream brace for the high waters. The Iowa Department of Transportation was closing portions of I-29 and I-680 because of high water.

The Woodbury County Sheriff's Office posted drone video to Facebook that shows water overtopping roads, homes and farms after the Little Sioux River breached a levee Tuesday. Residents of the towns of Smithfield and Rodney were asked to evacuate. The WinnaVegas Casino and Resort outside of Sloan closed Tuesday because of flooding "as an abundance of caution" and will reopen when deemed safe, casino officials said in a social media post.

President Joe Biden signed a disaster declaration for Iowa late Monday, ordering federal aid to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by the series of severe storms, flooding, straight-line winds and tornadoes that have been hammering several counties for more than week. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

"I will continue to request additional counties as more information is collected," Gov. Kim Reynolds said.

Record rain falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

In South Dakota, this month is already one of the wettest Junes on record. Sioux Falls reported 6.49 inches Thursday and Friday, the wettest two-day period since recordkeeping began in 1893. The city of Mitchell, 70 miles to the west, was hit with a record 7.70 inches over the period.

Gov. Kristi Noem signed an order declaring a state of emergency that exempts delivery of needed supplies in support of flood relief efforts from federal regulations regarding drivers’ hours of service. Noem said one death has been reported because of the flooding: an elderly man who died following a UTV crash  near Lake Alvin.

Severe weather heading toward East

The severe weather threat will reach the East by Wednesday or Thursday, and dozen of states are at risk of storms packing hail, damaging wind gusts and flooding downpours, AccuWeather said . The front may slow, creating the risk of flash flooding from repeating heavy thunderstorms later Wednesday from part of the upper Ohio Valley to the central Appalachians and New England, AccuWeather said.

Pennsylvania. The Jersey Shore. The Chesapeake Bay. When it comes to the mid-Atlantic — according to our readers — New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania are where it’s at. This year’s best resorts range from boutique and petite to sprawling and grand, and many of them even include a view of the water.

Omni Bedford Springs Resort in Bedford, Pennsylvania, rose up in the ranks this year from the No. 7 spot to No. 1. Also making a repeat appearance: The Asbury in Asbury Park, New Jersey (the property retains the same ranking as last year, No. 10); the Asbury Ocean Club Hotel (No. 3 last year and No. 5 this year); and Nemacolin, in Farmington, Pennsylvania (No. 2 last year and No. 6 this year). The Inn at Perry Cabin, in St. Michaels, Maryland, has taken over the No. 2 spot (up from No. 4) with its world-class spa and water view; it is perched right on the Miles River, which leads to the Eastern Bay.

The Wave Resort, in Long Branch, New Jersey, voted No. 3, is a new addition this year. The oceanfront property includes a spa and multiple dining venues, as well as a pool overlooking the water. Also in Long Branch: Bungalow Hotel, a boutique property located in the Pier Village section of the city, and the sibling property to the Wave.

Omni Bedford Springs Resort: Bedford, Pennsylvania

Tucked into the Allegheny Mountains, this centuries-old resort is home to eight springs and a 30,000-square-foot spa. One reader loved the “great crafted drinks with a menu designed by the local mixologists” at the Lobby Bar, while another raved about the “simply amazing experience” offered by the resort’s generous spa. A place for nature lovers and those who prefer a historic hotel experience, this property has stood the test of time. “What a wonderful restoration of a lovely old property,” one surveyor said. After welcoming presidents and dignitaries, this heritage property remains best in class.
