This Thailand and Bali 21-day itinerary will take you on the holiday of a lifetime incorporating a river cruise and a sea cruise, as well as temple tours, a floating market experience, a spiritual purification ritual and the opportunity to meet indigenous hilltribes, sea gypsies and boatbuilders. You’ll go snorkeling with gentle whale sharks, sea turtles and giant manta rays, and you will encounter Indonesia’s legendary Komodo dragons.

Your Thailand tour

Visit a century-old floating market, before stepping aboard a luxurious river barge to feast on gourmet cuisine while discovering Bangkok’s rich past through temples and palaces, as well as the ancient ruins of the grand complex of Ayutthaya. Delve into the temples of Chiang Mai on the next leg of your vacation to Thailand and Indonesia, and immerse yourself in the fascinating culture of the traditional hill tribe villages.

Your Bali tour

After flying from Bangkok to Bali, the next part of your journey begins with a tour of some of Bali’s most iconic temples and spectacular rice terraces. Experience the magic of a spiritual journey with a cleansing ritual and a guided meditation session conducted by a Hindu priest. Relish a very special lunch in a blissful setting in the rice fields, enjoy a tour of East Bali and relax beachside.

Your Indonesian cruise adventure

Embark on an unforgettable sea cruise, which will take you through gorgeous scenery and a panorama of islands, exploring quiet coastal villages, waterfall-fed river pools, volcanic islands, a mysterious crater lake, a boatbuilding community, and the Komodo National Park. Gently trek through river valleys or ascend savannah-wrapped hills offering dazzling views of jungle-clad mountain ranges and towering volcanoes. Witness the astonishing sight of hundreds of thousands of flying foxes emerging in a steady throng from the forest at dusk, and encounter Indonesia’s living dinosaurs, the awe-inspiring, giant lizards known as Komodo dragons. Unlimited use of stand-up paddleboards and sea kayaks adds yet another dimension to your nature explorations.

At the end of your cruise, an uninhabited island will beckon you ashore for a quintessential, toes-in-the-sand, celebration under the stars, complete with a bonfire, barbeque, and dancing to songs and music performed by the ship’s crew. Please note, the Ombak Putih is only available during certain seasons, and at other times a different vessel may be proposed.

Your Java tour

Transfer to the island of Java to watch the sunrise over the spectacular Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and its smoke-spewing volcanoes. Cross the desert-like sea of sand of the ancient caldera and up a steep staircase to the crater rim of Mt Bromo, and peer into the smoking darkness below – the veritable gates of hell. Marvel at the seventh century Buddhist temple of Borobudur, one of Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites, and explore the historic and cultural city of Jogjakarta, which is known for its wonderful arts and is still headed by a sultan. Wander through the Sultan’s ‘kraton’ (walled city palace), which remains the hub of traditional life, as well as the Taman Sari water palace and the city market.

This Bangkok, Bali and Beyond tour makes for the most perfect honeymoon. Please note this is just a sample itinerary that can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes.

Spiritual Journey Through Time

Today we journey to Pakerisan Valley, an 8th Century World Heritage site and the birthplace of the Hindu Darma religion, to uncover the historical religious roots of modern-day Bali.

The day starts with a short visit to the very first Hindu temple in Bali, encircled by a small village that grew around this sacred structure. Here we meet our guide for the day, an experienced researcher of Balinese spiritualism who will lead us to a temple nestled in the jungle. He will describe how people connect with God through the temple and demonstrate how to open your mind to the spiritual world.

Next, Tirtha Mengening, a very small temple located next to Holy Spring-fed pools. Tirtha Mengening roughly translates into “child waters” and offers a cleansing purification ritual conducted by a Balinese priest.

After the ceremony, take a plunge into the cool spring waters of a gentle river, shaded by a large tree. Soak in the serene atmosphere, for this temple is seldom visited by tourists despite being one of the most sacred in the region.

Lunch at a special place, surrounded by lush rice fields still grown from the original species of rice brought by the first Hindu priests in the 8th Century. After lunch, there is an opportunity to visit the priest’s house where he will guide us in quiet meditation.

Return to your hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy your evening at leisure!

We’ll drive you to the airport for your flight to Surabaya, where you’ll be picked up for a drive to the hotel at the foot of the volcano.

Visit to a Volcano

With its huge crater and almost mystical-like scenery in all directions, Mount Bromo and its surroundings are stunning beyond question.

Sunrise is the most magical time to view the entire Bromo landscape but this does involve a very early morning start of 3 am as you travel by private 4WD-jeep from Plataran Bromo to the rim of Mount Penanjakan in time for dawn.

From here at 2,770 meters above sea level you will enjoy unobstructed ethereal views over the active Bromo crater and the Tengger massif with the towering Mount Semeru as a backdrop, at 3,676 meters Java’s highest mountain and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia with small eruptions happening approximately every 20 minutes.

After (hopefully) witnessing a spectacular sunrise, you will return to your jeep and descend the steep slopes back down to the bottom of the Tengger Caldera until you reach a verdant savannah – a truly idyllic setting for an al fresco breakfast. A picnic blanket laid out on the grass awaits you to enjoy a delicious breakfast while you take in nature’s epic beauty and the magical landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Next drive back to Mt. Bromo. A short walk and a 250 steps climb (or a horseback ride at extra cost) will bring you to the rim of the crater. It is definitely worth the effort and will reward you with yet more incredible vistas of the active crater.

Return to your hotel for a full breakfast buffet and relax.

In the afternoon drive back to the airport for the short flight to the lovely town of Yogyakarta.

Borobudur and Yogya Old Town

Depart in the morning to visit Borobudur, 42km west of Jogjakarta. With your guide on hand, explore this massive Buddhist Temple (the largest in the world) and discover the incredible history behind its construction.

Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled entirely by human labor and took more than 75 years to complete. The UNESCO Heritage site is still visible in its full glory, with magnificent carvings and its unusual bulky structure.

Take a short trip from Borobudur to visit the nearby Mendut temple. Older than Borobudur, this pyramid-shaped temple houses three impressively carved stone statues. You’ll also visit Pawon temple, a simple yet beautiful monument known for its precise symmetry.

After lunch at a local restaurant, return to Jogjakarta and explore the old town, visiting the Sultan’s palace, Taman Sari castle, and the bird market. Venture on to the ancient Hindu temples at Prambanan, located 17km outside Jogjakarta.

Built in the 9th century, this collection of sharp, jagged temples features three main inner shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1991, let your guide expertly lead you through the history and ancient symbolism of these wondrous ruins.

Thailand & Bali Trip: The Ultimate 7-Day Bali And Thailand Itinerary

  • January 27, 2023
  • Bali , GUIDES AND ITINERARIES , Thailand

Making a 7-day itinerary for Thailand and Bail is certainly a daunting task. Between the two countries are world-famous tourist cities, thousands of attractions, top sights, restaurants, quirky neighborhoods, and more. Both countries are rich in culture and have so much to offer to every kind of traveller. So how do you choose so you can get the best of both countries? Much of your trip will be spent traveling from city to city so ideally, you will need to dedicate two days to each major city, visiting any three of your choice (Bangkok, Pattaya OR Phuket and Bali). That being said, we’ve compiled a detailed 7-day itinerary to see both of Thailand and Bali — two of the most stunning destinations in southeast Asia.

Bangkok (2 Days)

Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in southeast Asia for good reasons. With its many restaurants, tourists attractions, temples, and fun activities, the city serves as the cultural and tourist hub of Thailand. This is a great place to start your trip to Thailand and Bali.

Morning:  Begin your morning adventures in Bangkok by exploring the city on the Chao Phraya River. The scenic river runs through the city and is one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to see some of Bangkok’s most noteworthy attractions. The tours begin at 7 a.m. in the morning. So be sure to go early enough so you can purchase your tourist boat pass at the Sathon Bridge Pier and get a seat on the boat. Start your day early and head to BTS Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin on the Silom line. The boat passes cost ฿150 (about USD $4). Once on the boat, you’ll get to experience Bangkok’s beauty from the river. You also have the option to hop on and off the boat as you please at any one of the eight stops.

Afternoon:  One place in Bangkok where you’ll find a lot of tourists, especially on the weekend, is at the many markets in the city. Bangkok markets are known for being a one-stop-shop hub where you can get delicious food, souvenirs, clothing, handmade crafts, and much more. The most popular weekend market is the Chatuchak Weekend Market in eastern Bangkok, equipped with lots of stalls, full of everything from antiques to clothing. If you’re visiting Bangkok during the week, Pratunam Market is a great alternative.

Evening:  In the evening, catch the free shuttle to Asiatique, a large open-air mall located on the banks on Chao Phraya River. Aside from the shops and tons of Thai and international restaurants, the huge mall has plenty of other attractions like the Thai puppet show by Joe Louis Theatre and Calypso Cabaret. For some family fun, take a ride on the Asiatique sky, Bangkok’s largest Ferris wheel.

Morning:  There are plenty of parks in Bangkok to relax or simply go for a walk. The huge green spaces, with skyscrapers and luxury hotels as their backdrops, are some of the most serene areas you’ll find in a big city like Bangkok. The well-known Lumpini Park, full of those prehistoric-looking creatures, and the Benjakiti Park are the perfect places to start the day in Bangkok.

Afternoon:  The culture of Thailand is known for being rooted in spirituality and the best place to see and experience true Thai culture is at the many temples in the country. Most of the popular temples in Bangkok are located close to one another, so visitors can hop from one to the next. The must-see temples that are all found along the river are the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn.

Evening:  After a packed day of sightseeing and exploring, experience the buzzing Bangkok nightlife at Khao San Road, Bangkok’s infamous backpacker’s hub. There are plenty of bars and restaurants as well as stalls selling clothes and souvenirs here. If you want a slightly calmer experience, visit the nearby Rambuttri Village instead.

Phuket (2 Days)

Located in the Andaman Sea, Phuket is the quintessential island destination. Filled with rainforests, beaches, and fun tourist attraction, this city has so much to offer its visitors. Spend the day hopping from one attraction to the next or relaxing on the beach and soaking up some sun.

Morning:  In the morning, head to Phuket Town and spend a few hours exploring all the attractions and being mesmerized by the town’s charm. The town itself should be a tourist attraction, with its colorful streets, authentic restaurants, quirky shops, and old Sino-Portuguese buildings. In Phuket Town, you can visit the Phuket Tricky-eye Museum and Baan Teelanka (the Upside Down House) for family-friendly adventures that will keep you entertained for hours.

Afternoon:  After a morning of adventure and delicious lunch, relax with your loved ones at the Saphan Hin, a small, green space found in Phuket Town. This park is perfect for eating, exercising, or just relaxing for a few hours before taking on the busy nightlife in Phuket.

Night:  When the sun goes down, the fun on Bangla Road is just getting started. It is here you will find a plethora of go-go-bars, head throbbing nightclubs, and all the ‘sexpats’ and liquor that you can imagine. There are plenty of outdoor bars just waiting for you to pull up a stool and lose a game of Jenga to one of its bar girls. If you love going out and having an evening you will not remember, this is the stretch of road to visit.

The Free Trip Planning App for Bali!

It is a fun way to discover Bali and plan your entire trip by talking to someone who’s already been there and done that!

Morning:  The main reason why Phuket is so popular is its stunning beaches. While Patong Beach is certainly the most popular amongst foreigners, there are plenty of other sandy paradises found throughout the island. Some of the best beaches to check out on the island of Phuket include Laylan Beach, Bang Tao, Karon Beach, Surin Beach, Paradise Beach, and Kata Beach, just to name a few.

Afternoon:  After you’ve enjoyed a beautiful morning on the beach, head to the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park and explore the diversity of birds, animals, and plants. If you feel like walking, guides are available at the park to assist you through the eight-kilometer trek right through the park that leads to a stunning waterfall. There’s also a museum and an information center at the bottom of the waterfall.

Evening:  The Phuket Weekend Market is only open on weekends and well worth the visit. Here you’ll find a variety of different Thai dishes and snacks as well as an abundance of souvenirs. If you happen to be in Phuket during the week, take a stop at the Chillva Market or Phuket Indy Market for a range of cool items and food.

Pattaya (2 Days)

Multi-cultural Pattaya is a vibrant coastal city in Thailand known for its beaches, luxury resorts, and shopping malls. Along with the natural beauty of the city, the buzzing nightlife also attracts thousands of tourists who visit to experience the cabaret bars and 24-hour clubs.

Morning:  If there was ever an attraction in Pattaya to be completely fascinated by, Mini Siam is it. Mini Siam is a famous miniature park which features a small-scale replica exhibition of some of the most famous structures in the world. One can experience the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Wat Phra Kaeo, and so much more in one area. The entrance fee is ฿300 (about USD $9) for foreigners and the property opens at 7 a.m. in the morning. Be sure to book your tour from early on because the attraction is quite popular and tours are limited.

Noon:  The young and old alike can enjoy themselves at Pattaya Park Tower. The interesting thing about this attraction is that it is an amusement park and tower view rolled into one. The 240-meter tall observation tower hosts three international restaurants, all with 360-degree views of Pattaya. There’s also a gigantic water park, a jumping platform and a fun park with a rollercoaster, monorail, musical carousel, and much more for children.

Evening:   After a day of excitement, relax with loved ones on Jomtien Beach. This six-kilometer stretch of sand is pretty peaceful in the evenings since it is not as crowded as Pattaya beach. A number of activities and watersports are available but if you’re exhausted from all the day’s activities, you can grab dinner at one of the many seafood or Thai restaurants on the beach.

Morning:  The Nong Nooch Tropical Garden & Cultural Village is a cool way to spend your morning in Pattaya. The entire area is designed like a theme park with various displays like the Stonehenge garden, the 17th-century French garden, and more. A number of orchid nurseries and tropical areas are also on display, making the park a good place to relax.

Noon:  The Four Regions Floating Market is a one-of-a-kind market in Pattaya. Traders, farmers, and fishermen in boats float along the water offering a variety of fresh produce, flowers, and handicrafts. Take a tour on a boat through the market, or stop and bargain for something, whether its food or unique crafts made by the locals.

Afternoon:   What better way to be up close and personal with the marine life in Pattaya than to visit Underwater World. This modern aquarium is home to an extensive display of tropical fish and other sea creatures. Visitors can go swimming with the sharks and stingrays here, feed the fish from bottles and watch their shows. Most activities are scheduled in advance, so check with the office before visiting.

Evening:  Walking Street is one of the most captivating features of Pattaya, known for its nightlife attractions. The street comes alive at 6 p.m. daily with a myriad of lively bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and the so-called “very friendly” girls. For cool souvenirs made by locals, check out the market or malls nearby.

Bali (2 Days)

Beautiful beaches and impetuous waves, enchanting rainforests and waterfalls, emerald rice terraces, and fascinating cultural and spiritual attractions. These and much more attract tourists from all over the world to the magical island of Bali. Two days is enough to get a taste of what makes Bali so special.

Morning:  Wake up in the morning and breathe in the clean Bali air on the world-famous Kuta beach, just minutes from the airport. While it’s a crowded and energetic place at night, Kuta is more laid-back in the morning, with only a few people jogging or relaxing on the white sand. There is also no problem finding delicious breakfast place on the beach, with shops and restaurants providing authentic Balinese and western meals.

Noon:  Within walking distance from Kuta are the upscale neighborhoods of Seminyak and Petitenget, lined with lavish boutiques and a variety of local and international restaurants. Indulge in a little shopping for the latest designer products, and enjoy some of the best Balinese or international food in the area.

Afternoon : No one wants to leave Bali without going to one of the many temples on the island. For a true Bali cultural experience, head to the Uluwatu Temple. The temple area is home to many playful monkeys that can get a bit grabby, so hold on to your personal belongings. The temple has tour guides that explain the origins of the temple, cultural practices, and religious rituals. The Uluwatu Temple often hosts traditional dance performances during sunset.

Evening:  For great food in the evenings at an oceanfront restaurant, slide over to the nearby Jimbaran Bay. Many of the restaurants serve seafood as well as Thai cuisine and offer outdoor seating on the sand so tourists can soak their feet in the sand while enjoying their meals. A bonus is that there are traditional dances and live music performances in the area.

Morning:  Travel to Ubud early the next day to experience the enchanting rice terraces. You can enjoy a walk or cycle in nature through villages and the world-famous rice terraces that embellish Ubud’s landscape.

Noon:  Afternoons are reserved for the animals at the Ubud Monkey Forest. Serving both as a natural reserve and sacred temple, this attraction offers the best of culture and nature in Bali. Many tourists visit to interact with the hundreds of monkeys that stay there, while others are more in awe of the Hindu temple. Regardless of your preference, this place is a must-visit.

Evening:  You absolutely cannot leave Ubud without seeing one traditional Balinese dance or music performance. The Ubud Royal Palace is arguably Ubud’s most important landmark and the best place to watch the cultural performances in the evenings. Tourists tend to crowd the palace during this time so visit early and reserve your seat.

This country has gained many visitors as it has many magnificent temples, a deep religious atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and exotic history and culture. Blue ocean, white sand beaches, and sunsets are features of many different kinds of beautiful settings.

When is the best time to visit Thailand & Bali?

The ideal months to visit Thailand are from November to early April. While, in the winter, the west coast is more advantageous, all year long is pleasant for travelers along Thailand's east coast. There, rainfall is least in January and February and most abundant in November. Out of this time, Bali's dry season, which lasts from April to October, is the ideal time to visit. There are only two seasons in Bali: the wet season and the dry season. The only things that vary throughout the year are the humidity, although daytime temperatures generally stay in the mid-80s to low 90s.

What are the top places that you should not miss when taking a tour to Thailand & Bali ?

One of Indonesia's top islands is Bali Island. It is a destination where many people travel too frequently. People "only know Bali but don't know that it belongs to Indonesia" because Bali is so well-known. In addition to its gorgeous natural surroundings, creative atmosphere, and distinctive Hindu cultural backdrop, Bali Island is also known for its visa-free status. Here, a white beach with pure and blue water is charming. Touring Bali at any time of day, Travelers will witness various breathtaking views of the surroundings. Beautiful landscapes of many types are with blue water, sandy beaches, and sunsets.

Contrasting to the bright lights, swift pace, and loudness of certain Asian megacities, Bangkok's more laid-back feel and easily navigable public transit. Besides, the golden chedi of Buddhist temples and wats that provide seclusion around the city spring up among supermarkets and skyscraper structures.

Chiang Mai, Thailand's second-largest city, is the opposite of Bangkok. It is surrounded on all sides by rainforests and situated between the country's northern mountains. Visitors to Chiang Mai frequently spend learning about the region's rich cuisine, relaxing in the simple lodgings, and viewing the historic temple ruins.

Phuket Island

Phuket Island, which is situated on the sea trading route between China and India, is a fusion of several civilizations that have left their imprints. Due to the attractiveness of its amiably wonderful beaches and crystal-clear oceans, it is not only still the wealthiest district in Thailand but also vibrant and raucous.

The best itinerary for a Thailand & Bali tour?

Your trip will start from Bangkok (Thailand) - the capital and largest city, well-known for elaborate shrines and vibrant street life. After 2 - 3 days here, you fly to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, both in hilly northern Thailand with numerous tourist attractions. Take another domestic flight to Phuket or Krabi to explore the beautiful magnificent beaches with long white shorelines. After that, you will board an international flight to Bali (Indonesia) - the top islands with gorgeous natural surroundings, creative atmosphere, and distinctive Hindu cultural backdrop. Here, a white beach with pure and blue water is charming.

How many days should I spend for a tour to Thailand & Bali?

Bangkok – the unsleeping city, and Chiang Mai – the natural place of Thailand, with Bali – the beautiful beaches in Indonesia, are the best choices for a trip that lasts 10 – 14 days. If you want to continue to enjoy the pristine beach, you can visit Phuket/Krabi and spend 3 - 5 days more there.

Bali Tours & Vacations

  • Destinations

There are 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, but none shine brighter than Bali.

From the green slopes of Mt Batur to the Bintang bodegas on Seminyak’s main party strip, Bali is a volcano-dotted, beach-fringed paradise that’s serene and sensational by turns. But beyond the mega-resorts and yoga studios, you'll find the essence of Bali in the temples, out-of-the-way mountain towns, local markets and lazy fishing villages. Our Bali tours are about  diving the impossibly blue waters off Lovina, being welcomed into a Balinese family home , soaking in the Banja hot springs, or sipping smoothies in Ubud’s cafes . As always, when it comes to paradise, the hardest bit is choosing what to do first.

Bali holiday information

At a glance, local culture.

Intrepid travelers meet with a local holy man in Bali.

Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighboring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travelers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colorful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlors, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with Australians means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

Travelers enjoying lunch at Les Village, Bali

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavor. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found street-side at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialize in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling: This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chili, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay: Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur: Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng: The old favorite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal: A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavored with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavored with a tomato-chili sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

A traditional kecak dance performance in Ubud.

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travelers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence): Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival: For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts center in Denpasar, travelers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival: From July to October the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colorful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day: Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan: Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Travelers visiting Ubud's famous rice terraces

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighboring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "mother mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 30 °C (86 °F), with a humidity level of about 85%

Bali is surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017 Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travelers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimize their use of plastics wherever possible.

Intrepid travelers at a roadside market in Bali

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there’s also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewelry, colorful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of south east Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

When's the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between. The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January. Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative. The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed. October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkeling (the rainfall is much lighter than November).

Do I need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the  UK ,  Australia  and the  United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to traveling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia . But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated. Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What’s the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch. In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead.

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have western-style flush toilets. In more rural areas however, the traditional squat toilet will be more common. We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

What will it cost for a...?

Indonesia is one of the world's favourite budget travel destinations. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

  • Street food snack = 0.15c USD
  • Fresh juice = 0.40c USD
  • Bottle of beer in a bar = 1.50 USD
  • Souvenir sarong = 1.80 USD
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 3 USD

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re traveling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Do I need to buy travel insurance for my Bali tour?

Yep, you sure will. All our travelers are required to have travel insurance booked before the start of the trip. Your leader will take down your insurance details on the first day in case they are needed during the trip, so make sure to bring your policy documents.

For more info, check out our Travel Insurance . If you need help getting travel insurance, you can reach out to our friendly team and we can assist.

Is Bali accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Bali can be a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities because pavements are uneven, steps are frequent, paving is poorly maintained, and footpaths are usually obstructed with parked vehicles, street stalls and debris. Accessible public toilets are rare other than in big modern shopping malls. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available only through specialist tour operators, but cars and drivers can be hired readily and are good value. Local guides are easy to find in tourist areas. That said, Bali does have a wider range of tourism services and more developed facilities, including some accessible accommodation options.

Visitors generally find that Indonesians are very welcoming and willing to help those with access needs. The Asian Para Games took place in Jakarta in 2018 and have helped raise the profile of people with disabilities in the country as well as give new direction for making facilities more accessible in the capital.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQI travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalize gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship.

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. Indonesia is generally safe for queer travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behavior.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Jun 11 ,2022

We had an exceptional 11-day trip to Vietnam and Thailand that surpassed all expectations. We traveled with our entire family of 5 including our son who was adopted from Vietnam, going back for the first time. Top Asia Tour, with the help of Lily, fashioned a perfectly balanced trip of tours, an excursion to his birth town and orphanage, down time, and excursions. My teenage boys loved the experience from beginning to end

An Excellent Short Tour Firstly, our tour guide David has provided support and comfort beyond his expectations and his role. He has bought everyone under his arm looking after each and every one. Has always been there even in odd times to finding out or arranging best of what's needed.  The experience and transports and accomodation has been great, different and memorable, doubt we would have done this as an individual trip.

The amazing experience of a lifetime! My 23-yo daughter and I had the experience of a lifetime on this trip. I am an experienced traveler but for our first time in Thailand I decided to book an organized tour and it was fabulous.

A trip of a lifetime! every detail & top attention from staff. So fortunate to have TopAsiaTour for our adventure in Thailand. Tony & Big were so attentive & fun!! Riding in Tuktuks allowed for open-air excitement on the curvy mountain roads & accommodations were wonderful thanks B team for everything!

What a trip! Thank you for arranging such a fantastic trip to Thailand. This was my first holiday since the pandemic. Our guide Linda was amazing from the minute we met to saying our goodbyes. What a great way to discover a country with someone so knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. She made sure we were all ok, healthy and happy with any suggestions she made. It was so nice to be with someone so full of energy - all week, with 9 of us! And so caring. Linda also gave us flexibility in what we wanted to do so it really felt like we were friends on a trip with someone who knew what she doing. I would highly recommend a trip like this and I will be looking to book my next tour next year. It’s nice to not have to think about every step of the trip as I usually work out my own itinerary and try to see as much as possible when I visit a country, but this was all taken care of and I definitely experienced things I wouldn’t have been able to were I alone. The quality of accommodation and transport was fantastic as well. See you next year!

Dec 25 ,2021

honestly the best! The Thai Experience trip with the tour operator was honestly the best! There was so much included in the trip and the accommodation was top notch. The guide was really well organised and lovely! We've already booked to go to Sri Lanka next year.

Dec 14 ,2021

Excellent Both Jose and Nancy are very friendly, funny, responsible, trustworthy, and well-organized people, who love their job. I'm feeling lucky that exactly they were my tour guides. I strongly recommend them. Also thanks to TopAsiaTour, you really make me a lifetime trip to Asia. Definitely will travel with TopAsiaTour again.

So glad I booked to travel to Thailand through TopAsiaTour . Amazing activities, an awesome tour guide and everything was stress-free, didn’t have to worry about a thing. There was a good mix of culture, fun and chilled time. I’ve made friends for life during the tour and cannot wait for my next tour with Top Asia Tour!

Feb 10 ,2020

We had the best time! I went on the Thai Experience Tour arranged by Top Asia Tour and I can't recommend it more! I had the best time traveling with an amazing bunch of people. Before this trip I was a first-time solo traveller. The accommodation, the food and all the activities were so well planned and special. My highlights were the floating bungalows, the visit to the Elephant Sanctuary and the Sarana Bungalows. My tour guide Ben was awesome and always around whenever we needed him and he made sure we had the best time!

Feb 01 ,2020

My experience with Top Asia Tour Best of Thailand 9 Day tour was phenomenal. We got to do so many activities while still having some free time to explore on our own. Every activity was perfectly timed, incredibly well done and organized, and all the guides were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and made sure every person had an amazing time. I would definitely love to travel with TopAsiaTour again.

Jan 30 ,2020

Grace came and picked us up from the airport in Bangkok she was really friendly messaging us to make sure we knew she would be there and she got the taxi to the hotel with us and told us what there was in the area for us to see. She was always contactable for any questions or problems even before our tour started. We then met Ming and Oat the following day on the first night of the tour who were so friendly and took the time to get to know us and spend the time with us. We also met our tour guide Gun who is so friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable. Grace, Ming, Oat and Gun have made this whole experience amazing with their support, fun and knowledge of the places. They were all constantly taking pictures of our group having fun and making memories that will last a lifetime. The first 8 days with Ming, Grace and Oat were so lovely as they are doing such a great job, they are all going to be such great tour guides! Nothing was ever too much to ask any of them and they always checked to make sure you are okay! Thank you to all of them for making the experience amazing!

First time using Top Asia Tour and have to say we were very impressed, we can’t wait to book our next trip, Brendan is an absolutely legend of a tour guide and really helpful. He even organised a fantastic surprise for our honeymoon!

Dec 12 ,2019

I am really happy with the organisation, both tour guide were really helpful un every moment needed. The activities prepared.. everything was great.

Dec 11 ,2019

A great overall trip, we were able to see the countries and learn a lot of the history in the areas. The highlights for me were the personal encounters with the local people and being able to see how they live.

The guides were polite, courteous, knowledgeable, and had good fun. They were happy to fit in a few extra stops/sights that customers were keen to visit. Great accommodation and a wide range of activities, sights and experiences provided. Excellent experience all around.

Sep 27 ,2019

Excellent organisation. Great hotels, well chosen restaurants. Knowledgeable tour guides, especially Laki in Vietnam who went out of his way to make sure we were informed and entertained

Sep 21 ,2019

Wow! Wow! Every single second of this trip was incredible! Our local guide was down to earth, helpful and really easy to talk to. She went above and beyond for us and made everything just a little bit more special.

Aug 13 ,2019

A well-planned tour took in some excellent places and sights. Hotels were to the standard expected, and some exceeded. Our tour guide, York, was superb - very knowledgeable, informative with a great sense of humour. Would certainly recommend Top Asia Tour

Aug 06 ,2019

We really loved Thailand and Laos, the accommodation was great and the trips excellent as were both our guides the only reason for not giving 5 stars is because when we arrived in Bangkok early morning after a sleepless flight we were told our room would not be ready till 2pm. We were exhausted but had to wait in the reception for 4-5 hrs even though the hotel was half empty due to coronavirus. We did understand that is hotel's regulation. I would just like to say that our guide Ken was exceptional. He helped us to communicate with the hotel and let us check in around 10 a.m. He also would not leave us until we were at the airport with tickets in hand. I really do hope that you recognise his dedication and professionalism.

May 20 ,2019

This was my third tour. As a single traveller I always feel safe and welcomed. Amazing to see three countries in two weeks. The guides were exceptional.

Apr 18 ,2019

Yes, I would recommend TopAsiaTour and use again. Lily who helped me with my booking was friendly and efficient and took her time to sort out any queries I had. She also kept contact with us during trip to ensure we had a good time. All the guide and drivers are patient and kind. TopAsiaTour offer great holidays and we would certainly use them again.

Apr 07 ,2019

I Just have to share an amazing adventure I experienced not so long ago in Phi Phi islands. I wanted to do something different so I decided to do the Antrek jungle trek !! wow, that was probably one of the best things I did! We trekked in the jungle, side by side with monkeys and beautiful nature!! We walked to the highest top of the island, down to an paradise lonely beach where we could swim and watch the most beautiful sunset I saw!!

Mar 08 ,2019

We started our tour in Phuket city where we met up with Gun at our hotel, had a few hours to settle in and have a look around, dinner was lovely on Patong beach, had a wander around the town and filled in with culture about the surroundings from Gun

Feb 22 ,2019

Jeremy was great! He had lots of energy and kept the group upbeat even in bouts of long travel. Great experiences of the nightlife throughout this trip, and a good organized way to see different areas. We definitely could not have seen Thailand without Jeremy! He was intuitive to everyone's needs and very welcoming. Definitely made lifelong friends on this trip! The accommodation was comfy beds with subpar bathrooms but that's Thailand! Traveling was hard but not much Top Asia Tour could do about that, they kept it organized! Thanks for the great memories!

Feb 13 ,2019

We have been planning a trip with Top Asia Tour for the past few weeks. 3 girlfriends and I are traveling to Thailand in January. We started looking at big bus trips, since we don’t know the country or language but didn’t like the restrictions of doing only what they had on their itinerary. I research trips thoroughly and discovered Top Asia Tour. Again, I researched them as much as possible but didn’t find any red flags so started working with Joyce. What a wonderful experience! She is very professional and pleasant. She adjusted our itinerary, answered all questions, and organized an amazing trip. She answered promptly. I was a little hesitant about working with a company in China, but the deposit was made through PayPal which made me feel better. I will post again when we return, but I anticipate a fabulous trip. Thank you, Joyce, for all your help! I hope I can work with you again in the future.

Dec 05 ,2018

Our guide was so helpful and knowledgeable. She helped us with our ongoing travel as well. She gave us advice with any other activities the whole way through. Busy itinerary with time for chilling as well.

Nov 30 ,2018

We thought the tour was well-planned and organised. We enjoyed eating most meals in local restaurants. Yes, we would consider TopAsiaTour tours again. We found all three guides very good, they were informative and genuinely interested in telling us about their respective countries.

Nov 06 ,2018

From when our guide picked us up at Bangkok until we left Laos the holiday was well organized and with a good range of activities. The guides were very knowledgeable. The only drawback to the holiday was that being vegetarian we seem to have well-cooked but rather bland tasting dishes. Eating at different restaurants meant that we quite often had similar dishes throughout the holiday.

Oct 25 ,2018

We loved the full itinerary with York throwing in a few little extras like stopping in a field to watch the farmers harvesting rice and thenbeing offered a chance to have a go. Good vallue for money with so much packed into the itinerary and good flights

Feb 14 ,2018

Amazing! I really enjoyed every part of it. Thailand, the accommodations, the tour itinerary, arrangement & our guide were all incredible.

Dec 03 ,2017

We had 22 wonderful days in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Every time we arrived in a new place, there was always someone waiting for us. This really comforted us a lot. Reduce our nervous feeling in a totally strange place with no language understanding. We were picked up from the airport with our luggage stored in a van every time then assisted on hotel check-in and toured with our private chauffeur and tour guide. Our tour guides are very professional and knowledgeable about their country and history and made us feel very welcome and relaxed like touring with old friends.

Nov 15 ,2017

Culturally Rich, Busy Programme - Loved it! The tour is short but with a busy programme and lots to see so you feel you get the most out of this 7 days itinerary. Enjoyed the tour. Thanks

Mar 06 ,2017

For anyone that wants adventure and a fabulous experience, I would suggest the 11 day Thailand Experience tour with Top Asia Tour. So much fun. Words cannot express how wonderful the guides were, and how they took care to keep us safe and teach us about the beautiful country of Thailand. Lots of walking, but at 75 years old, I did fine. So many places that most tourists don’t even know exist. . So very happy I did this trip.

"Bali 15 Day Experience - Group Leader HENDRI Hendri was a fantastic group leader, I felt like he made the effort with everyone in our group together and on a 1-2-1 basis. Hendri was great at making me feel comfortable and come out of my shell, I also noticed this with other people in the group, so it was lovely to see that he cared about everyone's experience. He always had a smile on his face even when answering the same questions repeatedly throughout the day, from us travellers who were so care free we couldn't retain information, he was patient and kind and genuinely made the trip such a memorable experience. Beyond Hendri we met locals, staff members, workers etc, everyone was polite and pleasant, willing to go that extra mile. I do not think I had a memorable negative experience during my time with Intro. It truly was a wholesome trip filled with fun, laughter, happy tears, and memories I hope to never forget. Thank you Hendri and thank you Intro for helping me get my MoJo back!"

"I could not have asked for a more amazing experience in Bali. Anything you could possibly need, Bali Trip Mate found a way to make it happen. They were very good with communication and helpful. Our guide Yustus was an angle. Both him and Tress were incredibly knowledgeable & accommodating always making sure we were happy and taken care of. The hotels were clean, food was delicious, and overall this was such a wonderful experience. I can not recommend this tour enough it was truly a trip of a lifetime."

10 Days The Best of Bali, Gilis and Nusa Penida Island Experience Tour

10 Days The Best of Bali, Gilis and Nusa Penida Island Experience

"Overall the trip was great. Yustus was very nice and attentive to all our needs..and fun too. We managed to visit most of the famous sites and some less known but beautiful spots too. Although some days were abit rusheda and that's not just because of traffic but because there should be more time management. Watersports were quite expensive and we spent too much time there and not having so much time for lunch and swim in the next beach and the club later. We spent too much time at the monkey forest and eventually we had to skip Tanah Lot viewpoint(agreed by all group to be able to have enough time at Canngu). I only agreed as all the others preferred so and the only solution I was given was to be driven up and down from the beach but that meant I would have spent all the time in the bus. Maybe also you should get a bus with a microphone as from the back it was not always easy to hear the guide speaking clearly due to noisesand sometimes chatter between the group!. Kuta accomodation was good. Gili T was OK could have been slightly better. On Nusa Penida it was quite away from anything else, good only for one night. And it was very basic especially the breakfast they didn't have a basic fruit juice..I ended up having just water since I don't drink tea/coffee. Not even a choice for drinks..just beer and sprite. Luckily we managed to organise with Yustus help to go out to a club on New year's eve to eat and enjoy the festivities, if not we would have died of boredom at the hotel. But yes overall it was a nice experience, met some lovely people we had a great time... Thankyou ."

"Bali was amazing , good food good mates"
"It was an incredible experience. Hendri is an amazing tour guide that made it such an amazing time and I'm so grateful for the brilliant job he does. He is such a genuinely kind person and really good at bringing out the best in everyone, making sure everyone is having a fun time. He legit took care of every detail and was so organised so that we could all have the best holiday and not have to worry about anything. It was clear everyone he crossed paths thought really highly of him and he made such an effort to show kindness have positive relationships with all the locals we met along the way. Some of the experiences you do on intro travel are really memories for life - things like meeting the most beautiful family in a local village and exploring the ocean looking for dolphins and sea turtles and exploring rice fields. Highly recommend :)"
"Had such a great time on the Bali Intro tour. It was very well organised from the beginning and was full of great activities. Hendri was a great guide making everyone feel included and was very knowledgable about the places visited!"

I've spent months in Thailand. Here are 6 things everyone should do there.

  • I've been to Thailand four times, sometimes staying in the country for months at a time.
  • Bua Thong Waterfall, Khao Sok National Park, and Koh Phi Phi are all stunning.
  • I highly recommend taking a Thai cooking class and going scuba diving in Koh Tao.

Insider Today

After embarking on four long visits to Thailand, I've come to the undeniable conclusion that it's one of my favorite countries to visit .

Over the past two years, I've been fortunate enough to stay for months at a time. From adrenaline-pumping adventures to the immersive charm of cultural festivals, each experience has been uniquely enjoyable.

Thailand truly has something for everyone, but here are the things I think everyone should do to make their visit unforgettable.

Visit Bua Thong Waterfall — aka "The Sticky Waterfall."

tours of thailand and bali

Bua Thong Waterfall, more commonly known as The Sticky Waterfall, is a famous multitiered, limestone waterfall in Thailand.

It's nestled within Si Lanna National Park and conveniently located a short trip from the old city of Chiang Mai.

The waterfall's uniqueness is alluded to in its nickname. Due to the dense limestone deposits, you can effortlessly ascend and descend without slipping.

That means, unlike most waterfalls, you can climb from the base to the top. Most people don't even need any special safety equipment or shoes.

Entry is also free, making it one of my favorite attractions for its outstanding beauty and affordability.

Take an overnight lake trip to Khao Sok National Park.

tours of thailand and bali

My overnight lake trip remains the best and most memorable thing I've done in Thailand. The experience took place on a breathtaking lake in the Khao Sok National Park.

During the trip, kayaks are at your disposal, and the guides encourage you to paddle across the lake and explore. You also trek through the jungle, where head torches illuminate your path as you come across beautiful caves.

In the morning, you head out on a safari with the opportunity to spot wildlife such as monkeys, snakes, and elephants.

The once-in-a-lifetime experience offered the perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and adventure, and I got to see the best parts of Khao Sok National Park.

Visit temples in Bangkok.

tours of thailand and bali

Although Bangkok is well known for its fast-paced urban environment, you can discover moments of serenity within one of the city's beautiful temples.

The sacred sites are a must-see when exploring the vibrant capital city and offer a glimpse into Bangkok's rich culture .

Three temples stood out to me during my visits: Wat Phra Kaew within the Grand Palace grounds, Wat Arun on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and Wat Pho in the Phra Nakhon District.

Wat Pho, in particular, is home to the famous reclining Buddha.

The temples often grant free entry to guests, but there's sometimes a small fee (a couple of dollars) at the really popular ones.

Go scuba diving on Koh Tao.

tours of thailand and bali

Koh Tao, a small island off the east coast of Thailand, is one of the most affordable places in the world to earn your scuba-diving certification .

Plus, the island has an abundance of marine life that makes every dive unique.

Many diving schools on the island even offer free accommodation as part of their diving packages. This makes the overall experience more budget-friendly for backpackers like myself.

Take a cooking class.

tours of thailand and bali

Taking a cooking class solidified my love for Thai cuisine .

We were taught to cook a starter, three mains, and a dessert under the guidance of skilled instructors. As a special touch, we also visited the lively local morning market before the class to see the origins of fresh produce and grab extra ingredients.

We savored our creations, met some lovely people, and were able to take any spare food home. I also walked away with an in-depth cookbook.

Though the class was just a few hours, it left me equipped with newfound skills to experiment with when I returned home.

Book a breathtaking boat tour in Koh Phi Phi.

tours of thailand and bali

There are many boat tours to choose from in Koh Phi Phi, but most include multiple stops at iconic spots along the island group.

Mine stopped at Maya Bay, where Leonardo DiCaprio filmed "The Beach," and Monkey Beach, where we got to see dozens of cheeky monkeys.

If you opt for an evening tour, some boats stop on a small island for a buffet barbecue dinner while you watch the sunset.

Another highlight of the evening tour was the opportunity to snorkel with bioluminescent plankton. The glow of these tiny organisms in the dark waters creates a magical underwater spectacle.

Snorkels and life jackets were provided, and even those new to snorkeling could take part.

The China Highlights and tour of Dali was absolutely wonderful. The tour guide Daisy was so nice, knowledgeable and provided an excellent, memorable experience of Old Town Dali, Erhai Lake, the Three Pagodas and so much more. I have been on many tours and this one was the best, exactly what we were looking for, including the pace, the food, the attention to details, care and professionalism. Everything was positively great!

From the moment we arrived in Shanghai it was an unforgettable experience. The agency and Martín (our guide) made everything possible to had the best experience and were always open to show or teach more if was necessary. We were very happy with the places we saw and the stories we learned thanks to Martín!!! I totally recommend the agency!!

Our family tour with China Travel was absolutely wonderful. The China highlights of Dali was planned with the great care and help from Vanessa, and the actual tour guide, Daisy, who was knowledgeable, flexible, helpful, and provided an excellent, memorable experience for my family. We toured several locations and I especially liked the pace of Old Town Dali, the scenic view of Erhai Lake, and the history of the Three Pagodas, and so much more. I have been on many tours and this one was the best, exactly what we were looking for, including the pace, the food, the attention to details, care and professionalism. Everything was positively great! Highly

My mother and I greatly enjoyed our trip to Dali. Our tour guide was Daisy and she did a wonderful job taking us on an adventure around to everywhere we wanted to go. We even went to some under appreciated areas that we had been interested in! We visited a bit after my mother's birthday and Daisy was kind enough to give my mother a gift!

Our family tour with China Travel was absolutely wonderful. The China highlights of Dali was planned with the great care and help from Vanessa, and the actual tour guide, Daisy, who was knowledgeable, flexible, helpful, and provided an excellent, memorable experience for my family.

Ethan has been my tour guide for my four day trip to Beijing. He has been knowledgeable, polite, and most helpful. I was uncomfortable coming to China for the first time without speaking any Chinese at all. Ethan gave the tours, arranged for shows and literally took me to my seats. He also accompanied me to the train station to help figure my was around and help me find the correct train and car. I would definitely use China Highlights again in the future.

We visited Beijing with guide Mark, Xi’an with Jenny, Guilin with Frank, and Shanghai with guide Kris. Each guide was so unique but they all had in common a passion for their city and a true kindness. They were early for all of the airport and train station pickups and helped us so much checking into hotels and flights. We tried so many different foods special to each region and appreciated the great recommendations from the guides. The activities we did were a combination of “must-see” sites like the Great Wall, Forbidden Palace, Teracotta soldiers, and participating in local arts like shadow puppetry, fan making, and seeing cultural shows.

Lily Wong our guide at Guilin was wonderful. Along with all the good qualities like being punctual, courteous, organized, knowledgeable, hard working she is also caring. The scenaries at Guilin is second to none,Lily helped us to take lots of pictures to capture the scenaries as much as possible. With Lily's help I can enjoy the amazing cave and the rafting. At Yangshuo Lily also recommend a Light Show on the river. That was fantastic never saw anything like it. I must mention the unique hotel they put us in.Its called Yangshuo Moondance hotel. My wife is very happy with Lily because she took a lot of pictures for her and took her shopping for a new (Qie Pao,cantonese Cheung Sham).

I have an excellent trip to Guilin and my guide, Gary Wei who works for China Highlights Tour was very professional and knowledgeable in regard to the history of the Guilin and Yangshuo. Gary was remarkable with his recital of a lot of ancient poems. Hence, I had such a good and memorable experience. I do highly recommend China Highlights Tour to anyone who wish to visit China.

Our tour guides Doyle Cheng (Kunming), Daisy Shi (Dali), Martin (Lijiang) were knowledgeable about the local culture and folklore regaling us with many stories, history mixed with witty remarks and jokes. They made us feel safe, comfortable during the many trips feeding us with local snacks, sweets, pastries, fruits. Our shopping list were all taken care off with their well recommended shops and even bargain hunting. They were sensitive and alert to our toilet breaks, flexible to last minute changes and recommended good dinner restaurants.Big thank you to Martin for your extra attention given to our children when they werent feeling well.
