From Deserts to Reefs

G’day, every day, Australia! Beaches to “barbies,” koalas to wallabies, Outback to ocean…where to begin your Australia tour on this island-country-continent? Travel in Australia and you'll find unique wildlife and dramatic landscapes, no doubt. Or perhaps the sun-kissed Harbour City of Sydney, Melbourne’s art scene or Barossa Valley’s world-class wineries. Go as far back as Aboriginal life in places like Ayers Rock and Alice Springs to discover how to survive in the bush, throw boomerangs and play a didgeridoo. Whatever your fancy, Australia welcomes you.

Destination must-see's.

Australia ms1

Ayers Rock (Uluru):

You will find this towering sandstone rock formation rising from the desert floor in the southern part of the Northern Territory of central Australia. It sits in a remote part of the Outback 208 miles southwest of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. The rock is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural landmarks and rises 1,142 feet… making it 2,381 feet above sea level.

Australia ms2

The most populous city in Australia is located on Australia’s east coast. This lively metropolis is surrounded by one of the world’s largest natural harbors. The first British settlers founded the city of Sydney in 1788, but it is said that the area had been inhabited for many years. Millions of tourists visit Sydney each year to see its natural features such as Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach, as well as its man-made marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Australia ms3

The city was founded on August 30, 1835 and is located on a large natural bay – Port Phillip. Today it is often referred to as Australia’s cultural capital because of its renowned performing and visual arts scenes. Melbourne is known as the birthplace of Australian dance styles, the Australian film industry, Australian impressionist art and the Australian television industry.

Australia ms4

Kakadu National Park:

This protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia is about 100 miles east of Darwin. It is the largest national park in Australia covering 7,646 square miles, and measuring nearly 125 miles from north to south and 62 miles from east to west. The park is roughly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu features many diverse landscapes perfect for outback adventure travel, nature activities and most of all, experiencing aboriginal culture.

Destination Must-Do's

Australia md1

Great Barrier Reef:

Experience one of the seven wonders of the natural world when you set off by boat for the Great Barrier Reef. As the world’s largest living organism, you’ll find over 2,800 individual coral reef systems which are home to amazingly diverse marine life. Their bright colors look remarkable against the turquoise waters. Jump in the water to snorkel and really experience the Reef in an immersive way! Stroll along the shore, relax on the beach, or just watch the fish and sea turtles swim past from the pier. It’s a truly good day at the Reef, mate.

Australia md2

Barossa Valley:

The valley located in South Australia is known as a major wine-producing region. In fact, it is renowned as one of the finest wine producing regions in the world. Located about 37 miles northeast of Adelaide, the valley is formed by the North Pala River, is home to more than 550 growers, and is famous for its Shiraz.

Australia md3

This island state that includes the island of Tasmania and the surrounding 334 islands is 150 miles south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. It may be famous for its Tasmanian Devil but it is also very eco-conscious with 45% of its land being reserves, national parks and World Heritage sites.

Australia md4

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. They are found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand. In Australia they are often called fairy penguins and in New Zealand they are known as little blue penguins or blue penguins. These penguins emerge from the shore at Phillip Island nearly every evening and make their way to their evening resting spots.

"From watching the sunset over Uluru or snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, to hiking the trails of Tasmania or sailing the iconic Sydney Harbour, Australia will be your most epic trip yet."

Tour Director

Cruise on Sydney Harbour

Take a cruise on the Sydney Harbour for a first-row encounter with two of Australia's most iconic landmarks. Float under the majestic Harbour Bridge and marvel at the dynamic architecture of the Opera House. The best of the city swooped up in a gentle sail.

View spectacular outback sunsets at Uluru

With immense cultural significance and astonishing natural beauty, the sandstone monolith of Uluru is a highlight of any Australia vacation. Climb onto the back of a camel and navigate a portion of the rock's 10-kilometer circumference, before toasting the striking sunset with a glass of bubbles.

Discover Melbourne's eclectic street art

Australia's culture capital is a maze of narrow wine bars, Asian food markets and boutique-lined alleyways. Amidst it all, uncover colorful murals, brazen political statements and the work of acclaimed international artists. From AC/DC Lane to Centre Place, Melbourne will gift you a banquet of street art to appreciate.

Discover the secrets of ancient Aboriginal culture

Hear the Dreamtime stories of Australia's original landowners and begin to understand their 50,000-year connection with the land down under. Known as the world's oldest living civilization, the culture of the Aboriginal people whispers secrets of a time most can scarcely comprehend. Discover their rich heritage in the northern city of Darwin.

Travel to the Penguin Parade on the Phillip Island

It's no secret that Australians love to surf, but when a flapping penguin waddles out of the ocean, even locals squeal with joy. Venture to the southern coastline of Victoria to watch this nightly spectacle, as the beloved birds return from a busy day of fishing.

Our top 5 things to do in Australia

Take a trip to Australia with Trafalgar and we'll reveal the best these sunburnt lands have to offer. From the sparkling Sydney Harbour to the toddling penguin parade of Victoria, these are just some of the remarkable moments that re waiting for you.

Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney

Dive into a world of Maritime archaeology, migration and marine creatures at Sydney's Australian National Maritime Museum. With a 3D cinema, a prime location of Darling Harbour and numerous rotating exhibitions, this museum is one of the most interesting marine-themed things to do in Australia.

ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image), Melbourne

The moving image unfurls in its many forms at Melbourne's ACMI museum. Peel back layers of digital culture with a highlight reel featuring the country's infatuation with film, TV and videogames. Spend an entire day on Flinders Street to uncover many of the city's best museums.

Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney

Take a journey into Australia's artistic culture from English settlement to the present day in the gallery often proclaimed the most important in the country. Found in a grand gothic building featuring eight sunlit halls, a day at the Art Gallery of New South Wales will connect you deeply to this part of the world.

Best museums in Australia

With a population of just 25 million and a formed history dating back just 120-years, it's easy to be surprised by the depth of culture found in Australia. With Trafalgar, you'll peel back the layers of this country by visiting these museums and many more.

A yeast-based spread that makes many travelers squirm, trying Vegemite is a must when you visit Australia. Though locals like to experiment with the ways they use this vitamin-rich spread, consume it on a piece of toasted bread atop plenty of butter for the most typical Vegemite experience.

An irresistible chocolate biscuit that is part of Australia's cultural fabric; eat one Tim Tam and you are likely to finish the entire packet. Available at any convenience store or supermarket around the country, pick up many trays to take home and share with friends.

Australian sporting events are scarcely complete until you consume a meat pie. A baked pastry dish available in countless modern variations, the traditional meat pie is filled with minced gravy and slathered in tomato sauce.

Best food in Australia

Though Australian food is typically recipes adopted from the rest of the globe, there are a few iconic staples not to miss. From the art of spreading Vegemite to the traditions of the meat pie, our Australia trips will guide you through the very best this country has to offer.

What to pack for Australia

People packing for a tour

An empty suitcase

Tim Tams aren't easy to locate beyond the skirts of Australia. Pack an empty suitcase so you can return home with supplies and sweet souvenirs for family and friends.

Australian currency

There's no leniency in Australia when it comes to paying in foreign currencies. Pack Australian dollars in cash to avoid the fees of teller machines and currency convertors.

Australia is known for giant spiders and snapping crocodiles. But it's more likely to be tiny flying insects that get in your way. Pack bug spray to keep mosquitos at arm's length.

Goggles and a snorkel

Home to the world's most highly regarded reef, packing goggles and a snorkel will mean you can explore Australia's underwater world until your heart is content.

Sun protection

Trips to Australia typically involve a lot of time in the sunshine. Pack a wide brim hat and sunscreen to stay protected from the country's notoriously harsh rays.

Welcome to Australia

Marvels both natural and monumental astound throughout this "dreamtime" land down under... from the monolithic Ayers Rock (Uluru)... to a foodie tour in the multicultural melting pot of Sydney... to Australia's white-sailed landmark... and in the rainbow hues woven throughout the waters that make up the the Great Barrier Reef... the adventure begins here.

Sydney opera house, one of the world's most famous buildings... and more than just an opera house.

One of the most famous and recognizable structures dominating the skyline of iconic Sydney Harbour is the Sydney Opera House. With its striking modern expressionist design by Danish architect Jørn Utzon resembling a series of concrete "shells", it was completed in 1973 after nearly 15 years of construction, and has since become one of the world's most renowned buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not simply a single "opera house" as its name may imply, this major performing arts center houses numerous performance spaces including concert halls, theatres and recording studios, and is home to Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Theatre Company.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the Outback

Aboriginal traditions and a natural wonder at uluru (ayers rock) in australia's "red centre".

Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is a massive red sandstone monolith rising dramatically out of the desert Outback (or "Red Centre") in Australia's Northern Territory, and is one of the country's most recognizable features and popular attractions. Sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the local Aboriginal people of the region, Uluru is geologically classified as an inselberg (an "island mountain"); a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of Australia's Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, it's a natural wonder that will take your breath away…

The Great Barrier Reef

Discover australia's amazing great barrier reef.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is longer than the Great Wall of China, and considered the largest living thing on Earth. With a biology presentation and snorkeling demonstration en route, Tauck takes you on a cruise to the Outer Reef to swim, snorkel or sightsee in a glass-bottom vessel – or enjoy optional activities like scuba diving, helmet diving and more.

Sydney Harbour

There's no better way to experience iconic sydney harbour than aboard an evening cruise.

With its iconic skyline comprising some of the 20th century's most innovative architecture, Australia's Sydney Harbour is perhaps the most recognizable urban waterfront on Earth. Two of the Harbour's most remarkable "residents" include the striking Sydney Harbour Bridge – the world's tallest steel arch bridge, opened in 1932 and dubbed "The Coathanger" by locals due to its shape – and the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most distinctive buildings since its completion in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's no better way to enjoy the Harbour's highlights than aboard a private evening cruise featuring a reception and dinner.

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park

Discover aboriginal traditions at tjapukai aboriginal cultural park in cairns.

Established in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, in 1987, Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park has been sharing the authentic culture and traditions of the local Djabugay Aboriginal people for over three decades through performance, dance, cuisine and the arts. On your visit, you may learn how to "shake a leg" by joining in traditional performances, make fire without a matchstick, and create the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo.

Cultural experiences

Fundamental to understanding Australia as a whole is an appreciation of first nations culture, its history and relation to country. Intercultural exchanges with First Nation communities are one way we seek to inspire this.

Australia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The sun sets over Sydney, the most popular holiday destination in Australia.

Unlike many countries that promise a larger-than-life holiday but don't deliver, Australia keeps its promises of a unique holiday. Melbourne , Sydney,  Brisbane , Perth , Hobart , Canberra, and Darwin . Each is a superstar in its own right, each presenting something entirely unique to the traveler. From the hippy student-oriented life of Brisbane to the iconic architecture of Melbourne, from the frontier attractions of Darwin to the sandstone beauties of Hobart, each city of Australia feels incredibly exciting.

If you are up for a trip to Australia don't miss its wine valleys. Since most of the country’s population lives along the coast, seafood is very popular here. And of course, with a beer or a glass of wine in hand, you can easily wash down those lamb, chicken, and beef dishes frying on the BBQ as well.

Tour Highlights

  • Discover the underwater life of the Great Barrier Reef
  • Be mesmerized by the magnificence of the Sydney Opera House
  • See Wave Rock in Hyden, Western Australia
  • Swim with the Great White Sharks and dive with crocodiles
  • Hike the Uluru Rock for a stunning sunrise
  • Soak in the sun in one of Australia's beautiful beaches

Travel Tips

  • A holiday to Australia cannot be cut short if you want to see all the country has to offer. Australia is a very, very big country, so plan for a long holiday (and save your money). Be prepared for long trips as even flying from coast to coast can take several hours.
  • Head inland if you want to see the country's famous wildlife. That's where you're most likely to find kangaroos, koalas, and wombats in the wild.
  • UV rays are particularly high in Australia as there is a large hole in the ozone right above the country. Pack (and be sure to wear) high-SPF sunscreen.
  • Australia is perfect for swimming or surfing, but always pay attention to warning signs at the beach. Swim between the flags and beware of dangerous sea life.
  • If you're looking to interact with locals (and meet fellow travelers), stick to the coast. Most Australians live within 50km of the coast, while the center of the country is quite remote.

Australia has seasonal weather. Check out our guide on the  best time to visit Australia  before planning your tour to the continent.

Popular Durations for an Australia Trip

Australia’s vast size makes it difficult to see and do a variety of things in just a few days. If you are planning to spend only one week in Australia , pick a region and explore all that it has to offer. We recommend spending at least 10 days in Australia to spend some time in the major attractions of the region, but the longer, the better.

green turtle swimming in blue ocean, great barrier reef.

Australia — Top Destinations to Visit

  • Discover the true wilderness in Broome : Located in the vast wilderness of Western Australia’s Kimberley region, Broome is a beach resort town with a laid-back vibe. Take a relaxing camelback ride along Cable Beach at sunset, meet rare snubfin dolphins on a boat cruise, and marvel at the red pindan soils set against the striking turquoise ocean at Gantheaume Point’s red cliffs.
  • Relish the top attractions of Melbourne : Multicultural Melbourne, the coastal capital of Victoria at the head of Port Phillip Bay, is a vibrant city that exudes a distinctly European feel. Here, wide tree-lined boulevards and Victorian buildings mingle with labyrinthine laneways hiding cozy cafés and world-class restaurants. Head to the Southbank area and the Melbourne Arts Precinct, where you will find the Arts Center Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria.
  • Urban experience in Sydney :  The capital of New South Wales, Sydney is best known for its distinctive harbourfront opera house with its sail-like design. But there is so much more to see and do in the city. Meander along the Skywalk for spectacular 360-degree views of the city and suburbs and enjoy a harbor cruise in the Circular Quay port. Shop until you drop at the beautiful Queen Victoria Building and have a refreshing swim at Bondi Beach.
  • Visit city markets in Brisbane :  Brisbane has a bustling market scene and you will be hard-pressed to decide which markets to hit on a sunny weekend. For delicious farm-fresh produce, delicious delicacies, and handcrafted goods, head to the iconic Jan Powers Markets or the famous Saturday Fresh Markets in Rocklea. You will find vintage clothing, handcrafted goods, collectibles, and gifts at the Collective Markets. For and the best locally grown fresh produce, check out Davies Park Markets.
  • Explore the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns :  Cairns is the gateway to one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and one of Australia’s top attractions: the Great Barrier Reef. Home to the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of over 3,000 individual reef systems, colorful coral cays, postcard-perfect tropical islands, and footprint-free golden beaches. Join a snorkeling or scuba diving tour from Cairns and Port Douglas and enjoy an experience of a lifetime.
  • Take in the scenic wonders of New South Wales: From rugged mountain ranges and golden sandy beaches to endless star-studded skies of the outback, New South Wales is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country. What people love about 7 Day Australia Tours

I loved every aspect of this tour. Geoff was an AMAZING tour guide!!
A wonderful experience not only seeing and appreciating the beauty of the land but its geographical, historical, environmental and cultural significance to the world. Tasmania is a very special place
As far as tours go, it's great to have others to enjoy with. Wake Up was a nice hostel with a great breakfast included the first day. That day I chose to take the ferry to Manly where our tour guide Georgia showed us shopping, the beach, and this great acai bowl restaurant. From Sydney we took the 9 hour train ride to surf x camp in arrawara. The teepee I slept in was so cool. The surf lesson was great...but we only had less than 1 hour surfing in the water, if we wanted more we had to pay more, in the afternoon we went for a walk along the beach with some local indiginous people to learn about the plants of the area and try some, we stopped at the campground to find kangaroo. The food at surf X was good. surf x still hasn't sent us the link for the surfing photos though. Byron Bay is a great surf town, although I didn't surf Wake Up had free surfboards available...I had purchased the option to kayak with dolphins and didn't feel like surfing after that. the town had lots of little shops and restaurants and a walk to the lighthouse and furthest easterly point in Australia. The next day we went to Brisbane, after a koala bushwalk where we didn't see koala. In Brisbane check out Southbank and Queen street after dark.

India, Jordan join chorus of countries warning against travel to Lebanon

A photo taken during a tour organized by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Works and Transport shows staff loading cargo onto a plane at Beirut's international airport on June 24, 2024.

BEIRUT — India and Jordan were among the countries that issued travel warnings for Lebanon on Friday, joining a growing list of concerned states as confrontations between the Israeli army and Hezbollah threaten to expand into a full-blown war.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry in a Friday statement called on Jordanians to “avoid travel to the sisterly Lebanese republic at the present time,” citing unspecified “developments” in the region and the "safety” of citizens abroad. The ministry reiterated that it issued a travel advisory for Lebanon back in late October, shortly after the start of the Gaza war.

India’s embassy in Beirut said on Friday that its citizens should “exercise caution” in the country, but stopped short of calling on them to avoid travel. “In view of the current situation in Lebanon, all Indian nationals in Lebanon are advised to exercise caution and remain in contact with Embassy of India in Beirut,” the embassy noted.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said that citizens should avoid travel to Lebanon and that those currently in the country should leave while commercial options are available, citing “intensifying clashes along the southern border in recent weeks” in a statement that was updated on Friday.

Lebanese media reported on Thursday that Russia told its citizens to avoid traveling to Lebanon. The Russian ambassador in Beirut, Alexander Rudakov, told the local news outlet Elnashra on Thursday that the embassy did not issue a statement prohibiting travel. Rather, he said he recommended against visiting because of events in the south, according to Elnashra.

Germany’s Foreign Office updated its travel advisory to Lebanon on Wednesday, calling on German nationals to “urgently” leave the country. The update came one day after German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited Beirut.

“Tensions in the border areas with Israel are heightened and could escalate further at any time,” the office said, warning of potential attacks against foreigners and tourist facilities, including hotels.

In a similar move, the Netherlands issued a stern warning on Wednesday for its citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still available due to the increasing threats between Hezbollah and Israel.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said the current travel warning to the small Mediterranean country is “red,” urging its citizens not to travel there whatever their situation.

“It is unsafe in Lebanon, and the situation remains very unpredictable,” the ministry warned.

Earlier on Tuesday, Canada called on its citizens in Lebanon to leave “while they can.”

In a statement, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly called on Canadians to leave while commercial flights remain operational.

“The security situation in Lebanon is becoming increasingly volatile and unpredictable due to sustained and escalating violence between Hezbollah and Israel and could deteriorate further without warning,” she warned. “It is not the time to travel to Lebanon.”

“Canada is not currently offering assisted departures or evacuations for Canadians in Lebanon, and these are not guaranteed,” Joly added.

Last week, Israel's Channel 12 reported that Canada was preparing to evacuate 45,000 Canadians from Lebanon. The channel quoted Joly as telling her Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, that her country is planning “the largest evacuation we have ever undertaken” if a war in Lebanon breaks out.

Australia joined Canada on Tuesday and recommended against travel to Lebanon “due to the volatile security situation. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also called on Australians in Beirut to leave on currently available flights before the situation further deteriorates.

Similarly, Switzerland said Tuesday that travel to Lebanon has now become “inadvisable.” The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) warned on its website of the growing risk of escalation in the country.

“A significant deterioration of the security situation in Lebanon can occur at any time,” it added.

The FDFA also advised its nationals in Lebanon who wish to leave now to use available commercial options, saying those who wish to remain must be aware that “the Swiss Embassy in Beirut has only limited capacity to provide services or emergency assistance” in case the security situation deteriorates.

Last Friday, Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry also asked its citizens in Beirut to leave “as soon as possible” in light of the current situation.

Before Kuwait, Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Thursday issued its “most stringent advisory” against all travel to Lebanon, asking its nationals in the country to leave while viable options remain.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah movement and Israel have been engaged in daily cross-border fire since the war in the Gaza Strip erupted last October. The skirmishes, which had been limited to tit-for-tat attacks, have spread in recent weeks, with the two parties striking deeper into the other's territory.

The increasing attacks coincide with Israeli warnings to wage an all-out war on Lebanon to eliminate the threat posed by Hezbollah. The group has also escalated its rhetoric, with its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, threatening last week that “no place” in Israel will be safe in the event of war.

In a televised speech last Wednesday, Nasrallah said leaders of armed groups from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and other countries had offered to send thousands of fighters to back Hezbollah in its fight with Israel. Nasrallah claimed to have declined the offer, saying his organization has more than 100,000 fighters.

The United Nations warned Wednesday that a war in Lebanon would be “potentially apocalyptic.”

A war involving Lebanon “will draw in Syria . . . it will draw in others,” Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths told reporters in Geneva.

Tennessee economic development officials spend $32K on lavish, four-day trip to Australia

tour trips in australia

Two Tennessee economic development officials spent more than $32,450 during a whirlwind four-day trip to Sydney and Brisbane, Australia this year, flying in first class and staying in five-star hotels, while meeting with confidential business clients they sought to woo to Tennessee, agency travel records show.

But because of state confidentiality laws, few details are available to the public about what they did, who they met with or whether their efforts have yet yielded any results.

Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter and Deputy Commissioner Allen Borden traveled to Sydney and Brisbane for a total of five meetings or tours with Australian companies from March 5-8.

According to travel expense records obtained through a records request by The Tennessean, McWorter and Borden spent a total of $26,490 in business and first class airfare, and more than $2,700 on food during the four-day trip, including meals with confidential clients.

They stayed in five-star hotels: the Sydney Harbor Marriott, steps from the Sydney Opera House, and Brisbane Marriott, on the river bank with a view of the iconic Story Bridge.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

The two spent nearly $10,000 more on the four-day trip than all out-of-state travel expenses for all other Tennessee commissioners and cabinet-level staff for the first quarter of 2024 combined ($19,360).

Here’s what they spent for the four-day trip:

  • Delta Business and First Class airfare from Nashville: $24,514
  • Virgin Airlines Business Class Airfare between Sydney and Brisbane: $1,976
  • Meal per diem charged to the state while in first class flight: $213.50
  • Uber/ground transportation: $463.59
  • Five-Star Marriott Hotel rooms: $2,555
  • Meals: $2,576
  • Mileage reimbursed for travel to airport: $94.78

In addition, both officials billed the state more than $200 in per diem food rate reimbursements for meals already included in their first class airfare, according to their expense reports for the trip obtained by The Tennessean.

McWhorter also billed the state for a $64 expense noted “home to BNA Uber,” while also having expensed mileage to and from the Nashville airport.

State travel rules allow Tennessee Economic and Community Development employees on travel "to promote the state" to fly business class instead of economy as all other state employees are required, as long as there is some scheduled work engagement for the same day the ECD officials land.

For this trip, both officials stayed in hotels charging nearly $100 per room, per night above the allowed government rates. McWhorter signed off on the overage months before the trip, according to emails obtained by The Tennessean.

TNECD declined to comment on whether ECD employees should charge for higher-class travel than other state employees are entitled to.

No details are available to the public regarding who or what Australian company representatives McWhorter and Borden met with, what companies or industry sectors were targeted for recruitment on the trip,

More than 30 pages of material provided to The Tennessean by TNECD contained redacted material. State law allows the agency to shield all project information from the public unless and until a contract is executed.

A spokesperson declined to disclose information on the purpose of the trip or industry sectors the recruitment efforts focused on, pointing to state laws that allow the agency to keep economic recruitment efforts secret.

“Tennessee has built a reputation of being a top destination where companies from around the world want to do business, and it has taken decades to get us where we are today,” TNECD spokesperson Chris O’Brien said.

O’Brien declined to provide any details as to the total potential investment in Tennessee’s economy that McWhorter and Borden sought to secure through meetings on the trip.

He also declined to confirm whether the department has made progress toward recruiting new businesses to Tennessee through efforts made on the trip.

There are currently 30 Australian-based companies operating in Tennessee, employing 2,046 workers, according to a briefing document for the trip. Australia is 15th for foreign direct investment in Tennessee, according to the briefing document, with $295 million in total investments in the state economy. Australia is Tennessee’s 10th largest export destination, primarily focusing on medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture and construction machinery.

“TNECD engages in (foreign direct investment) trips, as do most other U.S. states, and we are competing nationwide to land these international brands,” O’Brien told The Tennessean in an email. “Additionally, these trips allow us to maintain and grow existing relationships with international businesses already investing in Tennessee.”

The governor's office has disclosed meetings with existing companies doing business in Tennessee on past economic development trips, including one to France and Italy . But O'Brien on Thursday declined to release information on any existing companies the top ECD officials met with, citing state confidentiality laws about recruitment efforts.

TNECD has landed about 150 foreign direct investment projects since Gov. Bill Lee took office in 2019, according to O’Brien.

McWhorter and Borden’s trip marked the first economic recruitment trip in nearly 20 years, with the last having occurred in the Bredesen administration, the department confirmed.

Pleas for federal funding to help kids like Luna access a life-saving treatment overseas

Luna is leaning over and smiling at the camera. She has a nose tube.

Luna Kemmery is a pint-sized fighter, displaying bravery beyond her years.

The Brisbane toddler has endured five rounds of chemotherapy, surgeries, stem cell therapy, a bone marrow transplant, radiation and immunotherapy in her battle against a rare form of childhood cancer.

"She's your regular two-year-old — happy, sassy, bubbly, very, very active," mum Samantha Byrne said.

"Given everything, we thought she would have slowed down a little bit — but, if anything, it's ramped her right up."

Luna was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in July last year.

It is a cancer which most commonly and cruelly affects children, with the average age at the time of diagnosis of just two years old.

"From as young as 11-days old, we were in and out of hospital for some breathing issues," Ms Byrne said.

"Now we can see ... it was something a bit more sinister."

Luna's future rests on access to a drug treatment available in the United States, but not currently used in Australia.

Luna is smiling at the camera and holding a toy unicorn

Known as DFMO, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is considering its approval in Australia.

But, there are fears even a streamlined application process could take too long, and parents of kids like Luna are pleading for federal government support to help cover the exorbitant costs of getting the drug overseas.

"It's as simple as a couple of tablets a day for a two-year period," Ms Byrne said.

"It does come at a hefty cost though — it's $500,000 for the course of treatment, which is around $21,000 a month."

The miracle drug helping kids avoid the return of cruel cancer

Samantha is holding her daughter Luna, who is smiling widely at the camera

The outlook for children diagnosed with neuroblastoma is devastating. About half do not survive.

Even after successful initial treatment, the relapse rate is shockingly high at about 60 per cent — and survival rates from there plummet to just 5 per cent.

DFMO was trialled in the US for four years, and was found to reduce the risk of relapse by 50 per cent, helping about three-quarters of children with the neuroblastoma diagnosis survive the deadly disease.

Chief executive of Neuroblastoma Australia, Lucy Jones said it is a difficult wait for the TGA to consider use of the drug in Australia.

The TGA has given the drug "orphan" status, which allows a fast tracked approval process of up to 12 months for a drug which could fill a significant gap in available medical treatment.

"Families desperately need this drug now, their children cannot wait, neuroblastoma does not wait," Ms Jones said.

"We really need to get the approval for that drug as soon as possible, or if not we need the government to find an interim solution to provide access to this drug to these vulnerable children immediately.

"We don't really want paperwork to get in the way of saving young children's lives."

About 50 Australian children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma every year.

For Ms Jones, this campaign is personal. She established Neuroblastoma Australia after losing her daughter Sienna, aged just two-and-a-half.

"We are asking the federal government to fund access to this drug in this country, to avoid children having to go to America," she said.

"Right now families are having to fundraise hundreds of thousands of dollars to take their vulnerable children overseas to get that drug."

Pleas for government action

Mr Butler is seen in profile through a narrow window in the studio door. He's looking to the right of frame.

In April, Neuroblastoma Australia and the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology and Oncology Group asked the Health Minister Mark Butler to commit to $15 million in funding over two years.

That would cover treatment during the period prior to formal TGA approval in Australia.

A spokesperson for the minister said he "remains concerned about the situation faced by children with neuroblastoma in Australia".

"The priority is for children to be able to access safe treatment, either overseas or in an Australian hospital," the spokesperson said.

"This includes looking at support for families for treatment overseas through the Medical Treatment Overseas Program which supports families at no cost to access treatments they can’t currently access in Australia.

"The minister and his staff have discussed accelerating approvals and access to treatment for neuroblastoma with both health authorities and with drug manufacturers."

Mr Butler's counterpart, Shadow minister Anne Ruston said the benefits of DFMO were clear for all to see.

"It is our hope that the government will support these families with accessing this lifesaving medication until DFMO is finally able to be listed on the PBS," she said.

Luna is clinging on to a swing while her parents push it. The swing is bright pink.

In Senate estimates in early June, officials from the federal health department said public hospitals could choose to provide access to the drug if they chose to.

"Public hospitals are not restricted in terms of the medicines that they can fund in the way that the Commonwealth is through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and the legislative requirements we have around that," Health department deputy secretary Penny Shakespeare said.

Ms Jones said hospitals do not have the budget to cover the cost fo the drug up-front.

"It doesn't really help the matter by suggesting something which is totally improbable and impossible," she said.

Luna's parents hope an announcement could be imminent.

"I just really hoping that Mark Butler will be able to help us in our play to get the treatment to Australia. so we don't have to uproot and split our family to travel overseas to get the medication that she needs to survive and thrive," Ms Byrne said.

Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.

Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and wombats.

Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay , there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle. Stop by some of Australia's best beaches from Sydney all the way to Cairns on an East Coast Encompassed tour - 18 days

Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.

Outback towns have a unique flavour and a distinct way of life; things are slower here, and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended as it gives travellers the chance to see a different side of Australia. Traverse the northern regions of Australia's iconic outback landscape on a Darwin to Broome Outback tour - 11 days

Culture and customs

With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit as travellers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.

Experience the cultural and geographical wonders of Arnhem Land with a First Nations guide on our Walk Kakadu National Park trip - 8 days

Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.

Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach or lazing in the park popular with locals.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals and sizzling barbecues.

Food to try in Australia

1. Fresh seafood

What's the weather like in Australia?

The weather in Australia varies depending on where in the country you are. For example, winter in Victoria and Tasmania tends to be very cold (around the 10 °C -15 ° C mark), whereas, if you head further north to the Northern Territory and Queensland, temperatures in the winter months are much nicer (usually around 18 ° C-25 ° C).

This pattern also applies to summer, where the southern states tend to experience lower temperatures (but still warm), while the northern and western states are warmer, with temperatures reaching as high as 40 ° C+.

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Australia?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of Australia, especially in large cities and urban areas. Remote, rural and mountainous places may have limited to no coverage, so be aware of this before venturing away from the city. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving your home country if you want to use your mobile, or you can purchase a sim card when you arrive. The provider that will have coverage in the majority of Australia is Telstra, secondly Optus and then Vodafone. A hot tip – when you are in remote areas and don’t have mobile phone signal, turn your phone to flight mode which will conserve battery and prevent your phone from using data trying to search for internet signal.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

Can I drink the water in Australia?

Drinking water from taps in Australia is considered safe, unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself travelling overland.

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge.   Overland tours   involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

What's the accommodation like in Australia?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in Australia you may find yourself staying in a:

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia.

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group.

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking.

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities.

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.
