Wilson has announced that PGA Tour winners Kevin Kisner and Trey Mullinax have joined as professional Golf Advisory Staff.

The two players have joined Wilson's growing list of golfers which includes John Augenstein, Kevin Chappell, Quade Cummins, Padraig Harrington, Brendan Steele, Kevin Streelman, Martin Trainer and Kevin Tway and LPGA Tour player Sophia Schubert.

Wilson also has a deep list of DP World Tour players in their ranks such as Marc Hammer, Alexander Knappe, Benjamin Herbert, Joakim Lagergren, David Law, Hurly Long, Craig Mackie, Jack Senior, Paul Waring and Andrew Wilson.

Kisner, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, made five top-10 finishes including a runner-up finish at the WGC Match Play and a third-place finish at the Sony Open.

The 38-year-old also made his second appearance for the United States Presidents Cup team last year. He may only have delivered half a point, but it helped Davis Love III's side win for the ninth time in a row.

Wilson expand Pro Golf Staff roster with two PGA Tour stars

"I am excited to be partnering with Wilson Golf. Wilson is a brand I’ve always respected; rooted in heritage but always looking for new ways to evolve," said Kisner.

"I’m quite particular about my equipment, and the clubs that I’ll be putting into play after extensive testing are second to none."

Mullinax is set to make his debut for Wilson at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii this week, following his win at the Barbasol Championship back in July.

This began a good run of form for the 30-year-old who reached the second stage of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He will tee it up with J.J Spaun in the first round at Kapalua on Thursday.

"As Wilson continues to grow in golf, we are excited to have Kevin and Trey join the Wilson team," says Tim Clarke, President of Wilson Golf.

"More players are putting Wilson golf equipment into play on worldwide professional tours every week, and we are excited to support their efforts in achieving their goals."

I’m going to keep saying it. Wilson needs to make a 400cc players driver that looks traditional. Their equipment is great but they need to cater to good players.

Three Swing Challenge: Testing the Mizuno ST-Max 230 driver

wilson golf pga tour players

GolfWRX’s resident Club Junkie, Brian Knudson, puts the Mizuno ST-Max 230 driver to the test in our new Three Swing Challenge.

Why three swings?

Many years ago, the legendary Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf, told us this:

“My formula as a fitter was three shots only. I discounted No. 1 just because it was the first one, counted 100 percent of No. 2, and discounted No. 3, because the player was starting to adjust.”

This is in line with our experience, and we believe golfers can make a meaningful judgment about a club in just a few swings.

Let us know what you want to see in the challenge next!

Wilson Golf latest players iron pays attention to the small details

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Wilson Staff Model CB.jpg

Drew Meredith

Wilson Golf has consistently evolved its approach to players irons, resulting in a string well-received clubs such as the FG Tour V4 and FG Tour V6. The new Staff Model CB builds on the heritage of irons used by players such as Padraig Harrington, Kevin Streelman, Kevin Tway, and Ricky Barnes.

Forged from 8620 carbon steel with a nickel-chrome finish, the Staff Model CB features a new approach to the construction of the back cavity. There the company used what it refers to as “Tri-Brace Technology” where structural steel is positioned in the cavity to connect the thinner topline to the more rigid areas toward the sole of the cavity to reduce vibration and produce a quieter, less-piercing sound at impact.

In the long and mid irons, 20 grams of tungsten is positioned in the low toe area. Doing so accomplishes two things: It boosts the moment of inertia to help mitigate the effect of mis-hits while moving the center of gravity lower and closer to face center—some 2.6 millimeters closer to face center than its FG Tour V6 predecessor. The key CG location is a component as many irons tend to have a CG somewhat toward the heel although better players prefer a CG more in line with the center of the face.

The irons also borrow from the Staff Model blades with a milled face that features the same groove configuration as the Staff Model blade.

“We listened to and worked closely with our advisory staff and tour professionals on these irons,” said Jon Pergande, manager of golf club innovation for Wilson Golf. “These irons are the result of that work.”

The Staff Model CB Irons use True Temper’s Dynamic Gold shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips as The Wilson Staff CB irons will be available on Wilson.com and retailers starting on, Jan. the stock offering. The irons will be available at retail Jan. 15, 2021 at a price of $1,000 in steel.

PGA Tour player Grayson Murray dies at 30 day after WD from Colonial

PGA Tour player Grayson Murray is dead at age 30.

The tour announced his death in an email on Saturday with statements from commissioner Jay Monahan.

“We were devastated to learn—and are heartbroken to share—that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” Monahan wrote. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Murray's parents, Eric and Terry, provided a statement on Sunday to the PGA Tour, acknowledging the death was a suicide . He was in Fort Worth this week playing in the tour's annual Charles Schwab Challenge. Murray shot 68 at Colonial Country Club in the first round, but in the second, he was two over when he made three straight bogeys at holes 14-16 and withdrew with two holes remaining, citing illness.

Murray had battled alcohol addiction and depression for years, but also experienced what looked like a career resurgence when he won twice in 2023 on the Korn Ferry Tour to re-earn his PGA Tour card. In January, he then  the Sony Open in Hawaii in a playoff,  holing an improbable 38-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to claim his second career victory and first in seven years.

Immediately after the win, an emotional Murray said, "It's not easy. I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times."

He had also praised his fiancee, Christiana Ritchie, and Jesus and said, "When you get tired of fighting, let someone else fight for you. ... I hope everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from it. If I can just help one person, that's all it takes ... I knew today was not going to change my life, but it did change my career, and I'm excited."

Social media reaction from players began showing up soon after the news broke.

On Saturday, Murray's caddie, Jay Green, told Golf Channel, "Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he has an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone."

As a youth, Murray won three consecutive Junior World championships and was the top-ranked player in his age group. The Raleigh, N.C., native captured a state title in high school and then played for three different universities—Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State. Murray earned conditional status through Q School on the then-Web.com Tour in 2016. He not only reached the PGA Tour the next year, he won his first title at the Barbasol Championship.

But there were also dark times ahead for Murray. He frequently battled commentors on X (then Twitter), and in July 2021, he said on social media that his elderly aunt and uncle were killed in their North Carolina home. Those deaths came on the heels of the recent passing of Murray's grandmother.

Following a second-round WD at the 3M Open that same month, Murray took to Twitter to talk about his battles with drinking and said he was on probation by the PGA Tour for an incident in a hotel bar in Hawaii. He went on to write that he is an alcoholic and playing the PGA Tour has been “awful” for him, while claiming the tour had ignored his pleas for help. In response, the PGA Tour released a statement: “We can unequivocally say that the PGA Tour is a family, and when a member of that family needs help, we are there for him. That has been the case here and will continue to be.”

Speaking to reporters on Saturday at Colonial, Monahan said he reached out to Murray soon after those comments, and that over a period of time they had meaningful discussions about mental health.

"I spent a lot of time with him because I wanted to understand what we could do, in his estimation, in his opinion, to help everybody else out here,” Monahan said.

“I’m devastated by Grayson’s loss … the conversations I had with him, particularly the last year, I learned an awful lot from him. He was very open and transparent with me.”

In August 2021, Murray revealed on social media that he was in treatment for alcohol abuse . “I still have a long ways to go and have made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t leave until I was 100% ready for the real world again,” he wrote.

More than a year later, in October 2022, Murray was in a serious scooter crash while competing in Bermuda and suffered injuries to his face, hands and knee.

After his win this year in Hawaii, Murray said he had been sober for eight months, and he spoke of the anxiety and depression that contributed to his drinking.

“I struggle with comparing myself to others, self-esteem,” Murray said. "I think they're common issues that we all endure. I got tired of trying to fight it alone, and I asked for help one day, and that's when my life changed.”

Grayson Murray celebrates winning the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Wilson Golf has announced its strongest roster of Tour staff players in more than a decade, with three Major winners and several Tour champions playing its latest clubs on a global basis this season.

In total, they boast no fewer than 42 victories between them on the European and PGA Tours.

Three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington, who is set to lead Europe into Ryder Cup battle at Whistling Straits in September, has signed another multi-year deal with Wilson – making it his 23rd year with the brand and one of the game’s longest running partnerships.

Paul Lawrie, the last Scotsman to win The Open Championship in 1999, also continues his long association with Wilson. He is the first Advisory Staff member to switch to the advanced four-piece Urethane Staff Model ball, which he will play on the PGA Champions and Legends Tours.

Gary Woodland, who captured the US Open title shortly after signing with the brand in 2019, will be playing and promoting Wilson on the PGA Tour with the irons he made famous at Pebble Beach.

The increasing Wilson presence on the European Tour sees six other players signed to multi-year deals. They include 2018 Nordea Masters Champion Paul Waring, who has played Wilson clubs since 2015 and rose to a career high 66 th in the world rankings last year.

Frenchman Benjamin Hebert joined Wilson in 2019 and had a breakthrough season, rising to a world ranking of 89. Last year, he finished T3 in the ISPS Handa UK Championship and earned a top-20 finish in his first WGC event in Mexico.

Swede Joakim Lagergren, a winner during his rookie season with Wilson in 2018, has renewed his contract along with Scotland’s David Law, who also won during his debut season with Wilson clubs at the ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia in 2019.

Following impressive performances during the 2020 season, Englishmen Richard Mansell and Jack Senior will also continue to play Wilson clubs. Mansell joined Wilson straight from college and secured a place in the top tier of European golf after finishing fourth on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit. Former Walker Cup player Senior had four top-20 finishes on the European Tour last year after earning his card the year before.

Playing Wilson clubs alongside Gary Woodland on the PGA Tour once again will be Brendan Steele, Kevin Streelman and Kevin Tway, using a mixture of Staff Model irons and wedges carried in the distinctive Wilson red Tour bag.

Wilson has also signed David Langley to play its clubs on the EuroPro Tour in 2021. Having turned professional last season, he won the Mena Tour to get a wild card into the Omega Dubai Desert Classic event.

“This is without doubt our strongest and biggest Wilson Tour line-up across the men’s and women’s game for many years and we’re really excited to see how the players perform with our new  Staff Model  clubs and the  Staff Model balls this season,” said Doug Wright, Global Commercial Director of Wilson Golf. “The range of Wilson players’ clubs this year is also the strongest it’s ever been, with irons to suit every golfer – from the Tour pro to the higher handicapper. Grayson Murray, two-time PGA Tour winner, dies at 30

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.

"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

We were devastated to learn - and are heartbroken to share - that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. https://t.co/JWGJ6Tz2jy — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 25, 2024

Murray's management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death.

"We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time," GSE said in a statement.

Jay Green, Murray's caddie, lamented the loss of his friend in a statement to the Golf Channel.

"Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend," Green wrote.

"He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply."

Monahan said he first learned of Murray's death late Saturday morning and that he spoke with Murray's parents to offer condolences. They asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue. The tour cited illness when Murray withdrew from Friday's second round.

Monahan said grief counselors were on-site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event. He also flew to Texas on Saturday.

"To be in the locker room, to see the devastation on the faces of every player that's coming in, it's really difficult to see. And really just profound," Monahan said on the CBS broadcast.

"Grayson was a remarkable player on the PGA Tour, but he was a very courageous man, as well. And I've always loved that about him, and I know that the locker room is filled with people that really will take that away when they think about Grayson."

Several players shared stories of Murray on CBS' coverage.

"It was a huge shock. My heart sank," said Webb Simpson , who learned of Murray's death shortly before teeing off Saturday. He said Murray was the first winner of his junior tournament and that they shared the same swing coach as juniors.

"I just hate it so much," Simpson said. "I'm miss him. I'm thankful he was in the place with his faith before this morning happened."

Peter Malnati played with Murray at Colonial. He offered to go on the CBS telecast and immediately broke down trying to talk about him.

"It's a huge loss for all of us on the PGA Tour," Malnati said. "As much as we want to beat each other, we're one big family, and we lost one today. It's terrible."

Other players, including Justin Thomas , Luke Donald and Bubba Watson , took to social media to express their condolences.

Speechless to hear about Grayson. Guy had been through so many ups and downs to get where he was. I hurt so much for his family and the people closest to him. My condolences and deepest sympathies — Justin Thomas (@JustinThomas34) May 25, 2024
Truly devastating news that Grayson Murray has passed away. He asked me for some advice on how to play Augusta a few months ago, last week I saw him at the PGA Championship, life truly is precious. My condolences and prayers to his whole family that they may find some peace 💔 — Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) May 25, 2024
Very sad to hear the news of Grayson Murray's passing today. Life is so fragile... I was just hugging you at the Masters, telling you how proud of you I am. Thankful to have known you. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be missed. — bubba watson (@bubbawatson) May 25, 2024

Murray, who spoke about alcohol and mental health in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open , hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.

Murray, who was No. 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.

He wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State, and won as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie at the 2017 Barbasol.

Murray said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married and felt his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the PGA Tour's 16-member Player Advisory Council the same month.

"My story is not finished. I think it's just beginning," Murray said in Hawaii. "I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues."

Murray said he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and felt he was invincible. He also brought attention to himself through social media, openly criticizing other players and getting into one social media spat with Kevin Na over Na's reputation as a slow player.

But Murray said he felt like he turned the corner when he sought help -- letting others fight for him, is how he explained it this year.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," Murray said in January. "That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Monahan called Murray an inspiration.

"Listen, these are some of the best athletes in the world," the commissioner said. "They think they're -- you know, and they are, in many respects, invincible. I think one of the things that I think back about Grayson's openness is -- and I speak about courage, he taught us all a lesson on that front, and that's something I'll never forget."

HAMILTON, Ontario — Rookie Robert MacIntyre claimed his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open. He did so with his father, Dougie, serving as the emergency caddie this week. It was a cool story for the two-time DP World Tour winner and member of the winning European Ryder Cup team in Rome.

But it also comes with a sweet seven-figure check. MacIntyre took home $1.692 million from a purse of $9.4 million. Not bad for a week’s work and for the 27-year-old pride of Oban, Scotland. In fact, he more than doubled his earnings for his previous 15 starts in which he had banked $1,133,146.

Fifteen-Year-Old Miles Russell to Make PGA Tour Debut at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Madison williams | 1 minute ago.

March 23, 2024; Graniteville, S.C., USA; Miles Russell, of Fla., shares a smile with his caddy after teeing off the 10th tee box during the final round of the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club.

Miles Russell, who is just 15 years old, will make his PGA Tour debut later this month at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after earning a sponsor exemption.

Russell made history in April by becoming the youngest person on record since 1983 to finish in the Top 25 of a Korn Ferry Tour event. He tied for 20th at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.

"I am thankful to Rocket Mortgage for giving me the opportunity to make my PGA Tour debut," Russell said in a statement. "Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players, and I'm looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month."

Welcome to the @PGATOUR , Miles Russell! The youngest player to ever make a cut on the @KornFerryTour is bringing his talents to Detroit for his PGA TOUR debut at the #RocketMortgageClassic . pic.twitter.com/PxYVyRz8nT — Rocket Mortgage Classic (@RocketClassic) June 3, 2024

If Russell makes the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he won't be the youngest player to ever do so. China's Guan Tianlang did so at age 14 back in 2013.

Two other teenagers have made PGA Tour debuts this season—Kris Kim and Blades Brown. Kim successfully made the cut at The CJ Cup in May.

Russell is a high school freshman in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., but he's been taking online classes since he was in eighth grade in order to play golf. Russell is the reigning American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year.

Grayson Murray, Winner of Two PGA Tour Titles, Dies at 30

Murray, who was outspoken about his depression and alcohol abuse, had begun a comeback after several volatile years, winning this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

By Emmett Lindner

Grayson Murray, the professional golfer who won two PGA Tour titles and was outspoken about his battles with depression and alcohol, died on Saturday. He was 30.

His death was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the PGA Tour. He died by suicide, according to a PGA Tour statement that was released on Sunday on behalf of his parents.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the statement said. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world.”

After a successful 40-foot putt to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, Murray rose to 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking, a career high. The event marked the height of a comeback run after several volatile years as Murray struggled with his mental health.

In a news conference after winning the Sony Open, Murray said that for a time he would drink during tournament weeks.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year, but also feeling like I was invincible,” he said. “I’m a different man now, and I would not be in this position right now, today, if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”

He added that he had attended rehabilitation for a month. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues,” he said. Murray had failed to gain PGA Tour status for several months last year after a series of off-course events mirrored a decline in his play.

An alcohol-related incident at a hotel bar in Hawaii in 2021 led to his suspension from the PGA Tour. Afterward, he posted to social media.

“Why was I drunk?” he wrote, adding that he was an “alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

The golfer Phil Mickelson, who has struggled with a gambling addiction , responded at the time on social media , saying “If I can help in any way I’d be happy to.”

This year, Murray played well enough to qualify for the Masters Tournament and P.G.A. Championship. On Friday, he withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

Grayson Murray was born on Oct. 1, 1993, in Raleigh, N.C., according to an ESPN biography. Mr. Murray is survived by his parents, Eric and Terry, and his brother, Cameron, and sister, Erica, according to the statement.

He attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State Universities, and at 16 he became the second-youngest player to enter the Korn Ferry Tour, according to the PGA Tour.

He continued to gain prominence, playing in the U.S. Open at the age of 19 and clinching a win at the 2017 Barbasol Championship, sinking a five-foot putt for a one-stroke victory.

After losing his PGA Tour card for the 2023 season, and following an angry outburst directed at Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, he seemed to have found his swing again. He won two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments last year, regaining his PGA Tour eligibility, and finished in the top 10 at two events.

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources.

Because of an editing error, the headline on an earlier version of this article misstated the winning record of Grayson Murray. He won two PGA Tour titles, not tours.

Hamilton Golf and Country Club, one of Canada’s top-ranked facilities, will host the RBC Canadian Open for the seventh time this week.

But the course will look very different than when the PGA TOUR was last here in 2019. Not long after Rory McIlroy’s dominant win five years ago, the club underwent a nearly $8.5-million restoration under world-renowned architect Martin Ebert.

Hamilton commissioned Ebert’s firm – which also advises on eight of the 10 venues in The Open rota, including this year’s host, Royal Troon – in 2014 to give the club a throwback look to its original Harry Colt design. Having spent time at Pine Valley in 1913, Colt came to Hamilton a year later. The official club opening was in 1916.

Ebert and design partner Tom Mackenzie had never done a restoration effort like the one at Hamilton. Most of the work was overseen from afar due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions, but it worked.

Golf Digest named Ebert’s work on Hamilton the "Best Renovation" of the year in January 2023.

“Harry Colt is one of the world’s greatest – if not the greatest – architects so having one of his rare North American golf courses is a keystone element of what makes Hamilton special,” said Andrew Harvie, an authority in Canadian golf architecture and founder of Beyond the Contour. “In technical terms, the routing is brilliant, with the layout largely routed in triangles around the hilly property with the Ancaster Creek on the bottom.

“How the layout handles the severity of the property while giving players fresh looks and strategies on every tee is a clinic in routing.”

With the RBC Canadian Open returning to Hamilton – before heading to TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in 2025, a debut venue – here’s everything else you need to know about the iconic Canadian club.

It's the same but different

Hamilton’s membership voted in favor to proceed with a Golf Course Improvement Plan Project about a month before McIlroy’s seven-shot triumph at the RBC Canadian Open in 2019. The plan included reconstructing tees, bunkers and greens on all 27 holes (the West/South PGA TOUR layout along with the East). There would also be a new irrigation system, practice putting green and new practice area.

“The players want to enjoy the experience of playing the golf course so that’s a big component of (an event’s success) and the amazing thing is that it was really well received, and it was fantastic before,” tournament director Bryan Crawford said. “The fact that it’s gotten even better – it’s almost unthinkable that it could have gotten better than it already was.”

Ebert said Hamilton’s topography was always its distinguishing factor.

“The impressive nature of the terrain, that was the key thing,” he said. “Whether it’s a new piece of land or an existing course, how many times do you stand on a tee and have your breath taken away? That’s pretty regular at Hamilton. That was one of the first takeaways.”

A legend still called the shots

Although Colt only came to Hamilton once, Ebert said he and his team wanted to “pay as much respect” to Colt as possible. The club had all the old plans, with descriptions of the bunkers, which Ebert called “so important” to the appearance of courses and specific holes.

“I was really pleased how they worked out,” Ebert said, “especially given our restrictions on travelling and not being able to get there during any of the construction. That was a real positive for me.”

The club’s original set of 1914 drawings from Colt included ragged edges, additional depth and “fescue eyebrows” near the bunkers, which players will see once again. SCOREGolf.com reported in 2021 – when the course first re-opened – that Ebert compared Hamilton’s bunker renovation to the recent work he did at Royal Portrush.

Tech provided COVID-19 workaround

Ebert was expected to make about 12 visits to Hamilton for the project but those were all cancelled due to the pandemic. Drone technology, 3D video and even virtual reality allowed him and his team to review the progress, finalize approvals and make changes remotely.

He finally saw the course in person in September 2021.

“It would have been far better to review our design and the contractor work on the ground, there’s no doubt about that,” Ebert said. “But we couldn’t. As a result of the techniques we developed during COVID, and since our detailed plans give so much information to the contractor, we had the confidence we could still pull it off to an extremely high standard.”

He admits it took one hole (the fourth) to really settle in on a process for the contractor and Ebert, but they got rolling quickly after the virtual back-and-forth style was agreed upon.

“It was a challenge, but we weren’t petrified because we do really concise levels (of planning),” Ebert said. “Having the VR headset and 3D camera was so instrumental with the bunker shape, bunker depth and green surrounds. It was exciting to develop those innovative techniques and we’ve used them in other projects like doing bunkers in Chile.

“Doing Hamilton with those techniques taught us a lot.”

Even the toughest holes got longer

The golf course will play 112 yards longer than it did in 2019. The par-3 sixth, the second-most difficult hole at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open, will play 25 yards longer. The par-4 seventh (new back tee) will play 35 yards longer.

A view of the sixth hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

A view of the sixth hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

The par-4 11th hole (21 additional yards) and par-4 14th (24) will require additional pop, as will the par-5 17th, which now measures 580 yards (30 yards longer with an entirely new green site that has been pushed back and to the left), and the par-4 18th (the hardest hole during the 2019 Canadian Open got an additional 11 yards).

Ebert said he’s hopeful the course will demand more precise ball-striking. The new greens will have more areas for pin positions and the bunkering will force players to think their way around the course.

The objective of the renovation, according to Harvie, was to create a cohesive version of the course, which had received numerous tweaks by numerous architects over the generations.

“In the renovation, they addressed all these,” he said. “Trees are out to allow some rediscovered views across the tumbling property, while mow lines are back expanded out, and greens and bunkers are uniform and consistent across the entire property.”

'The Rink' returns

A smiling Ebert said he never could have imagined that one of the holes on a course he’s worked on would be wrapped in hockey boards. But "The Rink" (in its sixth year) will make another appearance at Hamilton.

The par-3 14th hole will have the hockey-inspired atmosphere, complete with an organist, which is new this year. Ebert, who was in Hamilton for the 2019 Canadian Open, called it a “brilliant atmosphere” at The Rink.

A view of the 14th hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

“When players were coming on to the tee – that was fantastic,” he said. “I really, really did enjoy that. I’m not sure it’ll happen at The Open. But even there, they want a good par 3 to excite the crowds. But nothing quite as intense as a cauldron of atmosphere like we’ll have with the hockey hole.”

“It's a marquee hole for us,” added Crawford. “It allows for us to bring it tournament to tournament when we go to different venues. I don’t think anybody could have dreamed when that idea was brought forward that it would have grown to what it is today.”
