Thank you for checking in during our stay – I am having the time of my life!!! The people here are wonderful, the instruction excellent, the lesson horses superb, the food delicious, the rooms comfortable and the scenery beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever had such a wonderful vacation!

I would only recommend one thing, when independent women like ourselves tell you they’re taking the train from Lisbon to Evora, tell them DONT DO IT!!! Lol The ticket desk failed to inform us that there were several changes of trains along the way. Our first leg came to its end and the conductor kicked us (politely) off the train! Fortunately, Rita at Monte Velho immediately arranged for a taxi the take us to Monte Velho, so no harm, no foul. But we’ve learned our lesson!

Otherwise it has been splendid!

Choosing the Right Horse Vacation

Choosing the right horse vacation can be a daunting task, especially if you are a horse lover looking to spend quality time with these majestic animals. Here are some tips to help you choose the right horse vacation:

Determine Your Skill Level

Before you book your horse vacation, it is essential to determine your skill level. Horse farms and ranches offer different riding experiences, ranging from beginner to advanced. If you are a beginner, you may want to consider a vacation that offers lessons and guided trail rides. If you are an experienced rider, you may want to consider a vacation that includes arena work, jumping, and other advanced riding experiences.

Consider Your Goals

Consider what you want to achieve during your horse vacation. Do you want to improve your riding skills, learn a new discipline, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery? Different horse vacations offer different experiences, so it is essential to choose one that aligns with your goals.

Research Horse Farms and Ranches

Research different horse farms and ranches to find the one that best suits your needs. Look for reviews and testimonials from previous guests to get an idea of the quality of the experience. Check the facilities, such as the arena, stables, and pastures, to ensure they are well-maintained and safe for both horses and riders.

Consider the Location

Consider the location of the horse vacation. Do you prefer a rural or urban setting? Do you want to be close to other attractions and activities, or do you prefer a more secluded location? The location of the horse vacation can greatly impact your overall experience, so choose one that aligns with your preferences.

Check the Cost

Finally, check the cost of the horse vacation. Horse vacations can vary greatly in price, so it is essential to choose one that fits within your budget. Consider what is included in the cost, such as meals, accommodations, and activities, to ensure you are getting the best value for your money.

By following these tips, you can choose the right horse vacation that meets your needs and ensures a memorable experience.

You could also try your hand at trapshooting and archery, go out for a hike, soak in a hot tub, or play in the sports court. There are sometimes bonfires or square dances in the evening.

One-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins are spread throughout the property. They each offer the privacy and seclusion of the forest and come with large porches and comfortable lounge swings. Living rooms have a rustic fireplace and wood is restocked daily. Staff can even come to your cabin and build a fire for you at your request.

Trail rides often end with breakfast or lunch being served al fresco from the top of a mountain while dinners usually take place in the dining room of the main lodge. Lost Valley Ranch is open during spring, summer and fall only, and a 2-night minimum stay is required.

What people say about us

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.

He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.

Dan and Michelle were such a joy to work with! They really made our trip and cruise successful. Based on our needs they were able to help us identify and schedule what side trips and activities would best suit our interests.

After this trip I will be using a travel agent for future vacations…just can’t wait for the next one they help us plan!

Honeymoon Always has been fantastic- our trips were 1000% better because of their help. The first time we used them we wanted to have a fun trip with some cultural experiences, good food, not too packed, and for a good price. It was fantastic and now we've used them for several trips in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Each trip was so different but they were able to make each one special and unique to our needs.

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Please read our disclosure for more info.

Covered Wagon Ranch

Heading out on a solo horse riding holiday? Choose wisely.

Horse riding vacations for single travelers are like horses grazing in a pasture. The ranches look glossy and beautiful in the brochure, but until you walk into the pasture and ride that horse, you don’t really know what you’re getting.

As an equestrian travel expert, I’ve taken the guesswork out of selecting the best horse riding vacation for singles. Below, you’ll find some of my favorite solo horse riding holidays.

What Single Equestrians Want on Vacation

When I visited Kay El Bar Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona, I interviewed Rebecca Goodwin, a horse enthusiast from the United Kingdom. Rebecca, or Bex as she’s called in England, was looking for a place to ride where she would feel safe and surrounded by fellow horse-lovers. She wanted a supportive and friendly atmosphere and was looking for a ranch holiday that came highly recommended from an equestrian travel writer, such as myself.

If you’re like Bex, read on for singles-focused travel advice!

A champion of women, Barbara based her all-women western riding adventure, Klicks for Chicks, after the men-only Desert Caballeros ride in Arizona.

What’s to Love:

  • Riding in Montana’s Bitterroot Mountain Range
  • Return Each Evening to Gourmet Dining & Luxury Cabins
  • Fireside Awards Ceremony in Barbara’s home, friendships celebrated

Know Before You Go:

  • Start saving your pennies, Klicks for Chicks is a click above luxury

USA RANCH TYPES

Our ranch holidays in the US generally fall into one of these categories, although some offer a combination. If you are not sure what to expect from your horseback adventure, please contact us with your requirements and we will point you in the right direction!

WORKING RANCHES

Working ranches offer you the chance to enjoy the real myth of the Wild West. You will participate in the ranch activities, joining the wranglers in their daily work. Depending on the time of year you could be moving cattle to new pastures, branding, vaccinating, sorting cattle and checking fences. This will give you a real insight into cowboy life.

TX Ranch - Montana

Kara Creek Ranch - Wyoming

GUEST RANCHES

These ranches will give you a western experience, but they may not have cattle to work. Riding is the main focus and most ranches cater for all types of rider, even beginners. A good riding holiday for riders looking to experience the magical landscape of the Rocky mountains but prefer long trail rides and a relaxed atmosphere!

Rocking Z - Montana

Bitterroot Ranch - Wyoming

GUEST / WORKING RANCHES

Hide Out Ranch - Wyoming

HORSE / CATTLE DRIVES

Cattle and horse drives provide the ultimate cowboy experience; spend all day in the saddle admiring the unspoilt scenery while doing a worthwhile job. Accommodation can be basic whilst out on the drive but back at the ranch the accommodation will be much more comfortable.

Horseback Riding on a Beach at Santa Barbara - 1.5 Hours

What should I wear to go horseback riding?

Make sure to wear close-toed shoes (so if you’re on vacation it’s not the time for flip flops!). It is also recommended to wear long pants to avoid any issue with your leg rubbing against the saddle. Apart from that, comfort is the name of the game for your horseback ride experience.

Where are the best horseback riding locations in the US?

You can’t go wrong booking a horseback riding experience on your Hawaii vacation - Oahu, Maui, and Oahu all have great trails with beautiful Hawaiian scenery! If you’re looking to experience the great American West and South - Phoenix, San Antonio, Orlando, and other cities have great equestrian options.

How much does it cost to go on a horseback ride?

Horseback riding offers great value. You can typically find amazing 1 to 2 hour experiences ranging from $70 to $200 depending on the location.

Do I need horseback riding lessons before booking a trail ride?

If you’ve always wanted to try horseback riding but have no prior experience and have never taken horseback riding lessons, you’re still in luck. All of our trail rides and horseback experiences are great for all levels. You will be paired with a horse that matches your experience level.

Waymo Giving 100,000 Robotaxi Rides Per Week But Not Making Any Money

Running a robotaxi empire ain't cheap., waymore revenue.

As its competitors falter , the Google-owned and California-based robotaxi service Waymo seems to be in cruise control.

According to figures the company shared in August, Waymo is now giving over 100,000 paid rides to customers each week in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, using its fleet of fully autonomous and specially-equipped Jaguar SUVs. That's double the number of weekly rides it was giving in May, a clear sign of its growing dominance in this burgeoning market.

"At this point, the fully autonomous driving industry is really just an industry of one: Waymo," former CEO John Krafcik, who is now a board member at the EV automaker Rivian, told The New York Times .

But as the newspaper notes, there's a major caveat: despite its healthy stream of customers, Waymo still isn't profitable. Google's experimental division, which includes Waymo, had an operating loss of around $2 billion in the first of this year, and the robotaxi company is most likely a significant portion of that loss, Mark Mahaney at investment research firm Evercore ISI told the NYT .

With even the industry leader still in the red, it's a sobering reminder that the road to profitability is a long one, with no guarantee that it won't lead to a dead end.

Highway Robbery

Granted, these kinds of losses come with the territory. To make stupid amounts of money, you've got to spend stupid amounts of money.

Nevertheless, the NYT lays out a key disadvantage for Waymo. Unlike the rideshare companies it will be competing against, Uber and Lyft — with whom it charges similar prices per ride — Waymo needs to provide its own vehicles. And self-driving Jaguars aren't cheap, costing as much as $100,000 a pop, according to the NYT , citing remarks made by a Waymo executive in a podcast.

Though its safety track record is very good, Waymo will also have to contend with a general hesitancy towards self-driving technology. To safely operate its vehicles, Waymo meticulously creates detailed maps of each city, so expanding to new ones will require considerable research, time and money.

Case in point: not long before Waymo announced a huge expansion across California, Google said it was reinvesting $5 billion into the company. A show of faith, sure, but a sign of the serious expenses that an expansion entails.

Down the Road

The long and short of it is that everything costs a lot. Luckily, Waymo has managed to avoid the costliest blunder of them all in this biz, which is a major crash turned PR disaster — unlike its competitor Cruise, owned by General Motors, which briefly flamed out of the business after regulators began investigating its robotaxis for endangering pedestrians .

Waymo's chief product officer Saswat Panigrahi told the NYT that the company hopes that some of its fixed costs will decrease over time, and that the roll-out of its sixth generation of robotaxis, which are made by Chinese EV automaker Zeekr to replace the Jags, will mean "the profitability will jump further" — eventually.

Waymo will also need to be shrewd about what markets it targets. Potentially ripe for the picking, the NYT notes, are areas that have a shortage of Uber-slash-Lyft drivers, or cities with poor public transportation.

Those markets could help rake in money in the future. But for now, the robotaxi industry is at a crossroads.

Choose from 15 tours and 8 destinations in North America

You can gallop along the beach, herd cattle in the Rockies, take dressage lessons , go on wilderness pack trips or do trail rides in some of the world’s most spectacular places.  Large parts of our country are now densely populated and closed to riding tours by highways, fences, shopping malls and housing developments, but there are still vast expanses where one can ride freely as people used to do a century ago when horses were a prime medium of transportation.

There are a myriad of dude ranches, riding stables and trail rides on offer in the United States, but it is difficult to find riding tours which meet international standards of quality.  Insurance problems in many states make riding very costly and often rights-of-way for horse travel have been lost to fences, shopping malls, highways and housing developments.  Nevertheless, Equitours has been able to find some first class equestrian adventures and huge areas still exist where people can ride in open, unspoiled country as they used to everywhere a century ago.

One excellent place for people to ride at many levels on a wide variety of excellent horses from purebred Arabians to Percherons is the Bitterroot Ranch, the Equitours headquarters for over 40 years.  At the Bitterroot one can take trail rides in small groups divided according to skills so that less experienced riders are not frightened and good riders are not bored by slow, nose to tail rides.  There is an extensive obstacle course where advanced riders can practice their jumping skills, chances to herd cows and pack trips into the Greater Yellowstone Wild Ecosystem are also a possibility.  Certified instructors can help you prepare for the most challenging international rides.

World class dressage instruction on superb Lusitano stallions is available in Massachusetts in the summer and in Florida in the winter.  Guests can take instruction or go on trail rides using well trained Quarterhorses in the Texas Hill Country all year.  There are also outstanding trips on sure-footed ranch horses along the border of Utah and Arizona which have been particularly popular.  This area is arguably the most breathtakingly beautiful part of the world.

The passing of these last months has only set into our minds how truly blessed we were to meet each of you and to spend that time in the beautiful Wyoming wilderness. We recount each day of that trip often, and at the end of our reminiscing it ends in a big smile of knowing that we are forever changed from that experience.

Northeastern graduate Fiona Howard rides to equestrian triple gold in her first Paralympics

Howard and her horse Diamond Dunes capped off their Paris games with a winning 81.994% in dressage freestyle, riding to the ‘Avatar’ film score. They won gold earlier this week in individual and team events.

Fiona Howard only started riding para dressage three years ago, but a decisive debut on the sport’s biggest stage has established her and her horse, Diamond Dunes, firmly at its pinnacle.

Howard, a 2021 Northeastern University graduate, capped her first Paralympic Games in Paris with a gold medal ride in the Grade II freestyle dressage event, scoring a 81.994% and beating out silver medalist Georgia Wilson of Great Britain by about two and a half percentage points. Heidemarie Dresing from Germany won bronze.

The win comes on the heels of a U.S. victory in the Team event on Friday. Howard and Diamond Dunes scored an 80.000% — a huge score in dressage, a personal best for the pair and the highest individual score across any para dressage event at the Games to that point.

The three Americans competing earned a combined 235.567% score ahead of silver medalists The Netherlands and bronze medalists Germany. It was Team USA’s first-ever team medal in equestrian at the Paralympics.

Those wins come on the heels of a gold medal individual ride for Howard and Dunes on Tuesday.

After the team event, Howard heaped praise on Dunes, the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding she’s been paired with since March.

“Even trotting around the ring I was like, ‘he feels really good,'” she said. “What a feeling, when you can just trust your horse.”

As its name suggests, freestyle dressage is a looser affair than other dressage events, in which horse and rider pairs all perform the same set routines of movements to accumulate points. Freestyle dressage works more like figure skating: pairs work compulsory movements into routines choreographed specifically for them, to music they choose. The genres can cover a wide range, from classical to hip hop and arena rock. This season, Howard and Diamond Dunes have used music from the “Avatar” film soundtrack.

In dressage, an equestrian discipline where experience matters and most top competitors are paralympic veterans, Howard and Dunes’ decisive performances and gold medal sweep have been extraordinary.

“It’s the smoothness, it’s the regularity, the transitions. It’s the overall package,” commentator Deb Criddle said of the pair during Peacock’s livestream of the team event. “It just looks so easy, so elegant. ”

Para dressage riders compete in one of five grades based on their physical limitations and accommodations. Howard, who uses crutches and a wheelchair, competes at Grade II. During rides, her hands and legs are strapped to her stirrups, and she can use her voice and light dressage whips to help signal Diamond Dunes.

Howard and Dunes train together at Hof Kasselman, an elite equestrian barn in Germany, with Nicole Wego. Howard divides her time between Germany and Wellington, Florida, where she trains with fellow Team USA member Kate Shoemaker.

Howard has been competing in para dressage since 2021, but she has been riding horses at an elite level since childhood. Born in London to an American mother and a British father, she started riding at age 3 and competed internationally as a youth in reining, a Western equestrian discipline.

At 19, after years in and out of hospitals with a series of serious health issues, she was diagnosed by her team at Boston Children’s Hospital with dystonia, a neurological disorder that slowly sapped her ability to walk and control her limbs.

While completing a psychology degree at Northeastern, she spent nearly 800 days in the hospital receiving treatment. In 2021, as part of the university’s equestrian club, she started learning how to ride again all over again, working with her body’s newfound limitations.

Speaking with Northeastern Global News in May, Howard recounted a night in the hospital that she almost didn’t survive — and how it strengthened her resolve to get back in the saddle after years away from the barn.

Her doctors “were worried my heart was going to stop,” she said. “And this is kind of morbid, but I was OK with not making it. I was surviving, but it wasn’t a life. And it was in that moment I thought, ‘I need to get back to horses.’”

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.
