Tom Cruise Might Become the First Civilian to Spacewalk at the ISS

Universal is game to send Cruise into space for a proposed action film, but plans aren’t official yet

Astronaut on spacewalk

Astronauts spend years undergoing rigorous training before they make their first trip into space. And before becoming astronauts, they usually already have years of experience in related fields, such as engineering, geology, aeronautics, physics, medicine and biology; many have doctorates or have seen military combat.

But for actor Tom Cruise , a trip to space might just be another day at the office. Cruise hopes to shoot scenes for an as-yet-untitled action film at the International Space Station (ISS) in the near future. If he succeeds, he’d become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station,” according to Donna Langley , chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

In a lengthy interview with the BBC ’s Katie Razzall, Langley reveals a few more details about the proposed movie, which is “still an aspiration at this stage,” per the BBC.

“Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,” Langley tells the BBC. “That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom.”

Tom Cruise at press conference

Cruise and director Doug Liman , who worked together on the 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow , pitched the idea for the new film to Langley on a Zoom call during the pandemic. Though she didn’t share too many specific details about the plot, the general gist is that the storyline “actually takes place on earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”

Cruise is already known for doing many of his own stunts, including some potentially dangerous ones , so it comes as no surprise that he’s willing to take a rocket to the space station for the sake of cinema. As Daniel Kreps writes for Rolling Stone , it’s unclear whether Cruise would actually go inside the ISS or just walk around outside of the orbiting laboratory.

NASA, for its part, seems willing to collaborate on the movie. Though he has since deleted the tweet, former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in May 2020 that the agency is looking forward to working with Cruise. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” he wrote. Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, which is working with NASA on a number of projects, replied that the project “should be a lot of fun!” As Deadline ’s Mike Fleming Jr. reported at the time, Musk, Cruise and NASA were all reportedly working together to make the film a reality.

Despite his lack of official astronaut training, Cruise does have some cinematic experience with space and aviation. In 2013, he played a futuristic drone technician who must defend Earth against alien invaders in Oblivion . He also narrated the 2002 Imax documentary Space Station 3D . One of his most popular air-and-space-related films, of course, is Top Gun , the 1986 flick about Navy fighter pilots. Cruise also recently starred in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick .

Astronaut underwater

Since the space station’s launch nearly 24 years ago in 1998, ISS crewmembers have made just 253 spacewalks —in other words, they’re not something NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), Roscosmos or any of the other major space station partners take lightly. Spacewalks are inherently dangerous and, as such, NASA has a whole slew of rules and guidelines around them. As Paola Rosa-Aquino writes for Space.com , they’re also expensive and time-consuming—whenever possible, crewmembers try to use robotic arms to work outside the ISS.

Sometimes, though, astronauts (and Russian cosmonauts) have to go on spacewalks as a last resort. They typically have very specific reasons for leaving the space station, such as performing maintenance or installing new equipment. NASA calls these adventures “extravehicular activities.”

Wearing highly specialized suits outfitted with life support gear, crewmembers depart the space station through a special set of airlock doors. They remain attached to the space station via tethers, and they usually spend five to eight hours in space while completing their objectives.

Astronauts must complete special training before they undertake spacewalks. They spend a lot of time at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory near the Johnson Space Center in Houston. There, they practice spacewalks in a  6.2-million-gallon pool  in which they neither sink nor float. For every hour a crewmember will spend on an ISS spacewalk, they must spend seven hours in the pool, per NASA . They also train via virtual reality technologies that simulate extravehicular activities.

If Cruise ever does make it into orbit, there is another thing he’ll have to keep in mind: remembering to focus in the face of the vast cosmos. And that’s not necessarily an easy feat, as NASA astronaut Mike Fincke told CNN ’s Ashley Strickland last year.

“It’s really truly breathtaking,” he told the publication. “The only thing between you and the rest of the universe, seeing the whole cosmos of creation, is the glass faceplate of your visor on your helmet, and it’s just awe-inspiring.”

Tom Cruise will “hopefully” become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk” outside of the International Space Station when he blasts off to space to shoot a new action movie with director Doug Liman . Donna Langley , the head of Universal Pictures , teased as much during a recent BBC interview . Universal is backing the Cruise space project, which reportedly carries a budget in the $200 million range. While it was already known the movie would shoot scenes on the ISS, Langley said the plan is to also have Cruise perform a spacewalk.

Sources previously told Variety the film’s production budget has been set at $200 million. Cruise could earn somewhere between $30 million and $60 million, according to insiders. This would cover his services as a producer and star, and also be comprised of significant first-dollar gross participation.

Tom Cruise Might Actually Go to Space for Upcoming Film

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Over two years after it was first reported that Tom Cruise might shoot a film aboard the International Space Station, it appears that the actor is inching closer to becoming “the first civilian to do a spacewalk.”

Back in May 2020, NASA confirmed that they were in talks with Cruise and SpaceX on some sort of film project that was unrelated to the actor’s Mission: Impossible films. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote at the time.

With Top Gun: Maverick released and the next M: I installments on the way, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley told the BBC that sending Cruise to space is among the studio’s mission, and shared more details about the project.

Rather than relying on boring old CGI technology like every other space movie, Cruise — known for doing his own increasingly death-defying stunts — will actually rocket up to the ISS and become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station”; it’s unclear whether he’ll stroll around outside the station, as Langley said, or if he’ll actually enter the ISS, as NASA previously stated.

However, the movie is still in the dream phase and hasn’t begun production yet. Cruise does have some previous ISS experience having narrated, via Earth, the 2002 IMAX documentary Space Station 3D .

UK company behind Tom Cruise space film unveils plans to launch space movie studio

Introducing see-1, reportedly coming in 2024.

An animation of the SEE-1 module attached to Axiom’s space station on the ISS.

On Thursday, a UK-based company that claims to be producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming film in space said it plans to attach the first-ever space movie studio and sports arena to the International Space Station as early as 2024.

Called Space Entertainment Enterprise, or S.E.E., the company also announced it is working with commercial space station builder Axiom Space, which has its own partnership with NASA to build and attach an experimental space station to the ISS. That station is called Axiom Station, and Axiom hopes to launch its first module, called Axiom Hub 1, to the ISS by 2024. The company will then build out the space station before eventually separating it from the ISS in 2028 and making it a free-flying vehicle.

S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the new growing space station in December of 2024

But while Axiom Station is attached to the ISS, S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the growing space station in December of 2024. Dubbed SEE-1, the module will be available to individuals who want to film or live stream content in space, “including films, television, music, and sports events,” according to a press release announcing the news. Animated videos and images of SEE-1 on the company’s website show the module as a giant white sphere, though there were no available designs of what the interior will look like.

Though the module will belong to S.E.E., it is being built by Axiom Space. According to the S.E.E. press release, it will be an inflatable module that will stretch up to 6 meters, or nearly 20 feet, in diameter. S.E.E. says that it will allow third parties to also use the studio for their own projects. No costs or estimated budgets were provided for the project, nor did S.E.E. detail how much it would charge others to use the studio.

“Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station’s commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station’s utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers,” Michael Suffredini, Axiom’s CEO, said in a statement.

S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie

With today’s announcement, S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie. In 2020, NASA announced that it was working with the famous actor to potentially send him to the International Space Station to film a project. The actor’s ride to space is reportedly SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, which is used to ferry NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

Later, NASA confirmed in a podcast that Axiom was going to be involved in getting Tom Cruise to orbit . While Axiom builds space stations, it has also contracted with NASA and SpaceX to buy rides on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to send private individuals to the ISS. Axiom’s first private astronaut mission on a Crew Dragon, called Axiom-1, is scheduled to take flight in March . However, there’s no set date or confirmation for Tom Cruise’s flight. As for what Cruise plans to film up in the cosmos, all that’s been reported so far is that director Doug Liman is involved and that the film will not be a Mission: Impossible movie.

S.E.E. was co-founded by producers Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky. Their company boasts an impressive list of consultants of former Viacom and HBO executives. The company says it’s currently looking for investors on the Tom Cruise space project, which Deadline reported in 2020 would have a budget of at least $200 million.

However, it’s possible the budget could be even higher, given how much going to space costs. Just one seat on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is thought to run around $55 million , plus NASA charges additional fees for private astronauts using the space station’s facilities while in orbit. S.E.E. says it plans to conduct a fundraising round soon.

Producers on a Tom Cruise film set in space are planning to launch the world's first movie studio connected to the International Space Station

  • UK-based Space Entertainment Enterprise signed a deal to launch the first entertainment studio in space.
  • The ISS module is intended for creatives who want to film in low-orbit, micro-gravity environments.
  • The studio is tied to a highly-anticipated Tom Cruise-led project, which is working with SpaceX and NASA to shoot on the ISS.

Insider Today

The film industry is quite literally reaching new heights, with the forthcoming launch of the world's first entertainment studio and multi-purpose arena in space.

Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky, producers on an upcoming Tom Cruise movie set in space, announced on Thursday that they signed a deal to build a fully operational movie studio connected to the International Space Station. The 20-foot-wide studio, dubbed Space Entertainment Enterprise-1 (SEE-1), is slated to launch December 2024 and will be the world's first functional entertainment and content studio in space.

SEE-1 will be developed in partnership with Huston-based space infrastructure developer, Axiom Space, the company behind the world's first commercial space station, Axiom Station. Once it's ready for launch, the studio will dock with Axiom Station, which is currently attached to the ISS.

According to Axiom, the module will be able to support production, broadcast, and live-streaming for film, television, music, and sports projects.

"Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station's commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station's utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers," Axiom president and CEO Michael Suffredini said in a statement.

The Levenskys' U.K. studio confirmed to CNBC it is currently in production on the Tom Cruise-led film, though it is not clear whether Cruise will wait for the debut of the SEE-1 studio to shoot.

NASA previously granted Axiom a $140 million contract to attach its habitable module to the International Space Station. The company will eventually detach Axiom Station before the ISS retires, at which point it will become a free-flying space station.

The Lesnevskys plans on producing their own content from the SEE-1 module, but also said they plan to open up the habitable space station for use by other entertainment companies.

While the Cruise-led space movie currently remains untitled, the project is not tied to the actor's blockbuster "Mission Impossible" franchise, Deadline reported . The budget for the film is estimated to be a whopping $200 million, according to IMDB Pro .

Cruise, whose projects are known for pushing the limits in production and stunt filming capabilities , announced in 2020 he was working with Elon Musk's SpaceX and NASA to shoot the first narrative feature onboard the ISS.

Tom Cruise Might Be the First Civilian to Spacewalk Outside the ISS

The 60-year-old actor will launch to space to shoot a movie onboard the orbiting space station..

Tom Cruise at "The Mummy" New York Fan Event in New York City.

Tom Cruise is gearing up for the ultimate, gravity-defying stunt where he will be hanging off of a space station as it orbits the Earth at an altitude of 254 miles (408 kilometers).

Suggested Reading

Indeed, the Hollywood star is not only heading to space for his next film location, but may be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). Cruise is known for doing his own stunts, and this will definitely take the actor’s daredevil reputation to new heights (quite literally!).

Related Content

In a recent interview with BBC, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Donna Langley suggested that Cruise will perform the extravehicular activity outside the space station as part of the upcoming film shoot that’s set to take place on board the ISS.

Universal reportedly signed off on the project, although the film is still in the development stages. The film will shoot on board the ISS, and Cruise is supposed to board a rocket and head towards low Earth orbit for his role as a man tasked with saving Earth. Although the plot might be rather unoriginal, the film could break a few records during its shoot.

Cruise and director Doug Liman had pitched the film to Langley in 2020, she revealed in the BBC interview. At the time, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine sent out a tweet declaring the space agency’s support of the project. “NASA is excited to work with Tom Cruise on a film aboard the Space Station!,” he wrote . Reports had also suggested that Cruise was working with Elon Musk’s private space venture SpaceX on the project, assuming that the actor might ride aboard one of their rockets to get to the space station. “Should be a lot of fun!” Musk responded to Bridenstine’s Twitter post.

It’s not clear where the film stands today in terms of its timeline, but Langley said during the interview that Cruise will be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

The ISS welcomed its first private astronaut crew earlier this year, where the four crew members spent 15 days living and working in the microgravity environment as part of Axiom Space’s Ax-1 mission. NASA is already planning for the second private crew to board the space station in the second quarter of 2023, and the space agency sent out a call for proposals for two more private astronaut missions to the ISS that could fly to low Earth orbit as early as late 2023. However, NASA stipulated that any mission concept that involves spacewalks conducted by the private astronaut mission will not be accepted.

On the other hand, the all-private Polaris Dawn crew , which is scheduled to launch in December, includes a spacewalk as part of the mission itinerary. It’s not clear whether Cruise will have enough time to beat the Polaris crew for the title of first civilian spacewalk, with the crew having already been training for their trip to space since May .

The 60-year-old actor will still have to put in the work to be able to go to space, and not just rely on a career of action-packed, cor ny and self-righteous movies (except for Vanilla Sky , that was great). But seriously, spacewalks are no joke , and Cruise better be ready for the microgravity environment.

An earlier version of this post incorrectly described this upcoming mission as being the first to film on board the ISS. A Russian film crew worked aboard the space station last year, making it the first to do so.

When it comes to filming on location, it seems Hollywood executives will consider going to the moon for a movie. Or, in the case of Tom Cruise, to the International Space Station (ISS).

Cruise, one of Hollywood's most famous pilots—on screen and off—could possibly be on his way to becoming the first civilian to conduct a space walk on the International Space Station, if executives at Universal Pictures have their way.

"I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space . He's taking the world to space," Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley told BBC in a recent interview. "That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that, taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting, and hopefully being the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the space station."

Cruise proposed the idea to the studio during the pandemic, Langley said.

"The majority of the story actually takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day," she said.

Rumblings of the actor blasting off into space aren't exactly new. In the spring of  2020, Deadline reported that the Top Gun: Maverick actor was collaborating with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX to film an action-adventure movie.

It's a collaboration that NASA officials support, according to then-NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

"We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality. NASA is excited to work with Tom Cruise on a film aboard the Space Station.” Bridentine said, according to the Deadline report, “There has never been a leading man… who puts himself at risk as often as does Cruise, in the name of the most realistic action sequences possible. If he is successful shooting a project in Musk’s space ship, he will be alone in the Hollywood record books.”

The ISS, which is about the length of an American football field, orbits 227 nm above Earth, according to Kennedy Space Center.

Last year, the actor interviewed NASA astronaut Victor Glover about his ISS mission.

Tom Cruise’s space movie will make him ‘the first civilian to do a spacewalk’

Cruise’s biggest stunt yet would literally be out of this world.

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise already saved the world once through the air in the box-office swooping Top Gun: Maverick . Now he’s looking to repeat the big-screen feat, this time by flying so high that there is no air — far above Earth in the orbital cycle of the International Space Station .

Before we jump the countdown straight to liftoff, though, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the hugely-hyped (and yet unnamed) movie project that Cruise and Edge of Tomorrow directing collaborator Doug Liman have been trying to get off the ground at Universal Pictures . But if the project can topple some obviously huge logistical hurdles, studio boss Donna Langley hopes Cruise will become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of” the International Space Station.

Langley’s remarks came via a recent chat with the BBC , and effectively ratify the studio’s ongoing commitment to the ambitious idea of putting Cruise in a fully-functioning space suit. The on-camera stunt would definitely make for a historically epic location shoot, placing a dramatic spin on a feat that only a handful of human astronauts have ever achieved while marking a new milestone in cinema history.

Tom Cruise stunts are wilder than ever in first trailer for 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning'

It would also make for a logical evolution of Cruise’s famous do-it-yourself stunt work ethos as an actor. Courting real injury by taking some truly gnarly on-camera risks, Cruise already has leapt from a cargo plane for a breathtaking HALO (high-altitude, low-open) skydive in Mission: Impossible — Fallout ; scaled the world’s tallest skyscraper in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol ; and dangled from an in-flight passenger plane in Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation . The peril is legit whenever Cruise captures the shot without relying on a stunt double; while filming Fallout , he broke his foot while filming a parkour jump between two buildings, forcing the movie to halt production for weeks.

While little is known about the space movie Cruise and Liman have in mind, Langley reaffirmed that the space walk is meant to be a dramatic set piece, and that much of the film’s plot would indeed unfold down on the ground. The story “actually takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day,” she explained.

While fans wait for that project to be cleared for takeoff, Cruise has a slew of more definite movies in the works. Up next is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , the first of two installments in the next Mission: Impossible series that’s due in theaters on July 14 of next year. A second chapter, also teaming Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, is set to arrive the following summer.

Anyone who has ever seen Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise hanging off jet airplanes, scaling skyscrapers, or zooming through traffic on a motorcycle in countless action blockbusters knows he's truly a man without fear.

But his signature daredevil DNA doing his own insane stunts might be put to the test for one of his next film projects as he experiences a zero-gravity spacewalk that could jangle his steadfast nerves in unimaginable ways.

Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, wants to send international leading man Tom Cruise up into Earth orbit for a space-based action thriller that was originally pitched to her back in 2020 by Cruise and director Doug Liman.

Per the BBC , the basic story outline begins on terra firma , with the " Top Gun: Maverick " star then ascending into the heavens via a rocket to the International Space Station where the down-on-his-luck character's arc requires him to complete a dangerous spacewalk to save the planet.

According to a BBC News interview, this movie is still in the development stages but if it does get a green light by Universal, Cruise will add the distinction of being "the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station" to his storied career.

Edge of Tomorrow

Cruise, who narrated the 2002 IMAX documentary "Space Station 3D," has ventured into the realm of science fiction several times in his lifetime, the most notable titles being director Cameron Crowe’s "Vanilla Sky," "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds" for director Steven Spielberg, "Oblivion," directed by "Top Gun: Maverick's" Joseph Kosinski, and "Edge of Tomorrow" on which he worked with Liman, the same filmmaker who boldly proposed sending Cruise up into space.

Although delivering Cruise beyond the bounds of gravity outside the space station is a risky proposition that would require some pricey insurance bonds put up by Universal, Elon Musk's SpaceX and NASA (who worked together on private spaceflights to the International Space Station on Axiom Space's Ax-1 mission earlier this year) seem to be onboard the ambitious idea so we'll keep you informed on any new developments as they're announced.

Tom Cruise's space movie: Release date, cast, plot for Cruise's Space Station movie

Turns out, the sky isn't the limit for cruise.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Seemingly not content with chucking himself off scarily high places, stunt-loving star Tom Cruise looks set to become the first Hollywood actor to shoot a major motion picture in space.

News of Cruise’s as-yet-untitled space movie initially arrived online in 2020 and since then, the actor has delivered a double-punch of huge hits including 2021’s Top Gun: Maverick and the first instalment of Missing: Impossible’s latest two-parter Dead Reckoning.

Both were massive hits with fans and critics alike — and if you believe filmmaking icon Steven Spielberg — the latter even saved cinema during its darkest hour.

Read more: Tom Cruise's most daring stunts

In fact, with his addiction to death-defying stunts showing no signs of slowing, it sometimes feels like there’s nothing Cruise can’t do. With that in mind, what better actor is there to go where no actor has ever gone before and embark on the first American feature film ever made in the inky void above our heads?

Here’s everything we know about Cruise’s space flick so far.

Tom Cruise space movie release date

Despite being announced back in 2020 and with those close to the project delivering a steady stream of updates, Cruise’s high-flying space movie doesn’t have a solid release date yet.

Read more: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One: The best Easter eggs (spoilers)

With the film yet to enter production, it’s unlikely that one will be unveiled anytime soon. Plus, Cruise has a second Mission to un-Impossible before he starts work on anything new, with Dead Reckoning Part Two coming to cinemas in 2024.

With this in mind, it could be 2025 or 2026 before Cruise’s space epic lands in our orbit.

What is the plot of Tom Cruise’s space movie?

When the project was first announced, Variety billed it as a film that would “make history” as the “first narrative feature shot in space.” However, as more time has passed, a few more details have come to light that clue us in on what this groundbreaking space adventure might look like.

The project will be produced by Universal Pictures and helmed by Doug Liman , a filmmaker that Cruise has collaborated with before on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and 2017’s American Made. The film reportedly has a budget of around $200 million (£153million) and has recruited the assistance of Elon Musk ’s SpaceX and NASA who will allow the production to shoot on the International Space Station.

Additional details were unveiled by the head of Universal Pictures, Donna Langley, who told the BBC “Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan.

“We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

Langley also spilt some beans regarding the film’s plot, revealing that the movie “actually [mostly] takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.” According to Universal, Cruise will play a down-on-his-luck everyman that soon discovers he’s the only person who can save the world via a quick trip to space.

If all goes to plan, the movie will be a landmark, as no Hollywood production has ever attempted to helm a movie in the dangerous surroundings of outer space.

Liman spoke to Thrillist about being the person responsible for helming such a project, explaining that “when a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on… you’re just a little bit more receptive.”

Cut to 2023 and during a red carpet premiere of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One , Cruise confirmed that he and Liman were “working on it diligently and we’ll see where we go” but noted that the movie did not yet have an official start date.

These comments were similarly confirmed by ITV, who captured Cruise saying : "We're working on that. I'm working on that, definitely,” when asked about his space movie.

"I've always wanted to do that... We've been doing a lot of research for years.”

While no American-made film production has ever captured a movie in space, the blank void has been used as a backdrop for a film before. Russian-made feature The Challenge came out earlier this year and reportedly took its cast for a 12-day shoot in space.

Tom Cruise space movie cast

With the movie still firmly in pre-production, it’s currently unclear who might join Cruise on his latest nail-biting adventure.

The project’s official IMDB page currently only lists the Top Gun actor as its sole star. However, we’re sure more faces will join him as the film prepares for takeoff.

Tom Cruise space movie trailer

If you came here looking for a stunt-filled trailer for Cruise’s new space movie, then unfortunately we can’t show you the money. Much like details of the movie's cast, it’s just a bit too early to expect any video clips or full trailers for this one. However, as soon as they land, you’ll find them here.

The Tom Cruise space movie is coming soon.

Tom Cruise is looking to make history on his next film.

The actor is currently developing an untitled action movie with director Doug Liman that will see the Mission: Impossible star hopefully become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the International Space Station. "Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan," Universal Pictures Chairwoman Donna Langley said in an interview with BBC . "We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

Langley also revealed new details about the upcoming space film, which has been in development since May 2020. Cruise will play "a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth." The movie is expected to take place mostly on Earth, but will send Cruise's character to space "to save the day." The film has reportedly been budgeted at $200 million, with Cruise set to earn upwards of $60 million for his role as both producer and star.

A Flight That Would Make Maverick Proud

Cruise can currently be seen as United States Navy Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick , which has enjoyed a long and successful run in theaters. Maverick is currently the highest-grossing film of 2022, having earned just shy of $1.5 billion at the global box office. The film's resounding success has led many critics and moviegoers to declare the long-awaited sequel the film of the summer . Just as Maverick saw TOPGUN graduates embark on a mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Cruise's upcoming space film will see Universal attempt something no other studio in Hollywood has done before: film a narrative feature film in outer space.

The untitled project reunites Cruise with Liman after previously collaborating on the films Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American Made (2020). While further details on the upcoming film remain under wraps, both NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX company are reportedly involved with the film's scenes that will be shot in space.

Cruise is currently busy finishing filming on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two , which will once again be directed by Christopher McQuarrie. While Universal's space film is believed to be Cruise's next project after Mission: Impossible , the actor is also developing three future films with McQuarrie. One will be an original song and dance-style musical, another will be an original action film with franchise potential, and the last is a potential solo project featuring Cruise's Tropic Thunder character Les Grossman .

Cruise will next appear in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , which is scheduled to open in theaters on July 14, 2023.

10 Marvel Roles Perfect For Dwayne Johnson After His Disney Deal

Edge of tomorrow 2 gets exciting update from tom cruise movie director after years of stalls, kristen stewart's 2024 thriller with 94% rotten tomatoes score gets streaming release date.

More details have arrived from Universal's impending outer space movie with  Tom Cruise . Cruise began his career as an A-list celebrity straddling the line between comedy, drama, and action in films like  Risky Business ,  Top Gun , and  Rain Man , eventually rising to become the highest-grossing movie star in history. His recent efforts have mostly been big-budget action extravaganzas with worldwide appeal, especially the entries in the long-running action film franchise  Mission: Impossible , which first featured Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt in 1996.

Over the course of the last few years, Tom Cruise's journey into space has been a captivating drama. In May 2020, just a few months into the global pandemic, it was announced that the actor would be shooting a movie in space. However, his first sojourn to the stars, which was originally planned for October 2021, was delayed, and a Russian film crew beat him to the punch, spending 12 days in orbit shooting scenes from the upcoming movie  The Challenge .

Related:  Top Gun 2's Original Movie Differences Show How Tom Cruise Has Changed

Per  Variety , a few details about the upcoming project that will reteam Tom Cruise with  Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman and  Mission: Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie have been revealed. The filmmakers are currently making progress on the script for the film, which will feature Cruise as an everyman who discovers he alone has the ability to save the planet from an unspecified threat. The film will likely be shot after McQuarrie and Cruise complete production on  Mission: Impossible 8 , and will shoot some scenes on the International Space Station. Although it was rumored that the entire film would be shot in space, most of the other scenes will be filmed on Earth.

Considering Cruise's ever-impressive commitment to doing his own stunts, shooting scenes in space is the natural next step. For his stint in the increasingly action-packed  Mission: Impossible  franchise, Cruise has continued to up the ante on stunts, which have included running down the side of the Burj Khalifa in  Ghost Protocol and being strapped to an airplane flying at 5,000 feet in  Rogue Nation .

Unfortunately,  Tom Cruise 's other commitments have prevented this project from becoming an immediate priority. However, it is certain that whatever he does if and when he leaves the Earth's surface will be a dazzling spectacle on an entirely new level. The actor is a reliable source of death-defying feats that make his human-sized accomplishments feel as big and brassy as the massive blockbusters films around him.

Tom Cruise is still charting his work trip to space.

Back in 2020 it was revealed that the actor was planning to film a movie in outer space .

While at the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere in New York City this week, Cruise, 61, was asked about the status of the space-exploring film.

“We’ve been working on it diligently,” he teased to Variety . “We’ll see where we go.”

The project was first announced by NASA back in 2020, days after a report came out claiming Cruise was looking to space for cinematic inspiration.

NASA director Jim Bridenstein led the charge: “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Elon Musk , founder of SpaceX , tacked onto the excitement. “Should be a lot of fun!" Musk replied in a tweet.

Weeks later, Deadline reported that the project had confirmed Doug Liman to direct . Cruise and Liman previously worked together on 2014's Edge of Tomorrow and 2017's American Made .

Two years later, Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley confirmed the movie’s production in an interview with BBC News .

“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He's taking the world to space," Langley said. "That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that, taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the Space Station."

The upcoming film, which Langley said Cruise pitched to her over a Zoom call during the pandemic, has a budget in the area of $200 million, according to Variety .

Stefania M. D'Alessandro/Getty

“During the pandemic he asked for a Zoom call with us and got onto the call and said, 'Guys, I've got this great project and here it is,' " Langley said. "The majority of the story actually takes place on Earth and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”

While Cruise works “diligently” on his space film, he is currently rolling out his latest Mission: Impossible movie. While Dead Reckoning Part One can be found in theaters now, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie admitted that Part Two is yet to be completed. “We finish this tour, and on our way back to the U.K. we stop to scout along the way. We hit the ground running as soon as we get back,” McQuarrie told Variety . “I get two days of vacation between here and Tokyo and I’m back on.”

The first movie studio in space could be attached to the ISS in 2024

Space entertainment enterprise is also behind a tom cruise movie that's set to be filmed on the iss..

A module that hosts a film studio and sports arena could be connected to the International Space Station by December 2024. Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), which is co-producing a Tom Cruise movie that will partly be shot in space , is behind the project. If and when SEE-1 is up and running, it plans to host TV and film productions, as well as music events and some kind of sports, which can be filmed or livestreamed, according to Variety .

Axiom Space, which two years ago won a NASA contract to construct the first commercial ISS module, will build the station. All going well, SEE-1 will be connected to Axiom's arm of the ISS. Axiom Station is scheduled to split from the ISS in 2028 with SEE-1 still attached.

Whether SEE and Axiom can make good on their plan remains to be seen. SEE hasn't said how much the facility will cost, for one thing. It's currently planning a fundraising round.

Last year, a Russian crew shot a feature-length fiction film in space for the first time, beating Cruise and his director Doug Liman to the punch. That film, The Challenge , is expected to be released this year. Cruise and Liman, meanwhile, are expected to shoot their movie on the ISS later in 2022.

Tom Cruise Could Become the 'First Civilian To Do a Spacewalk' Outside the International Space Station for His $200M Movie

Tom Cruise is a well-known Hollywood actor for his incredible stunts in his movies. Now, he is set to make history by making a film on the International Space Station (ISS). He and his film will take a rocket to the ISS to shoot parts of the movie in the space station.

Science Times reported last year that Russian actress Yulia Peresild, 37, and Klim Shipenko, 38, filmed a movie on the ISS and stayed there for 12 days, beating Cruise in making the first film shot in space. They successfully returned to Earth aboard Soyuz MS-18.

First Civilian to Do a Spacewalk

Universal Pictures boss Donna Langley confirmed in a BBC interview  that Cruise would be taking the world to space. "We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

According to Variety, Universal Pictures is backing the Cruise space project that is reported to have a budget of $200 million. She further revealed that while the movie will send Cruise to space, most scenes are shot on Earth, and then Cruise's character would need to go up to space to save the day.

She described the character as a "down-on-his-luck guy who founds himself as the only person who could save Earth." Doug Liman, who will be directing the movie, has previously worked with Cruise in other films, like "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014) and "American Made" (2017).

Further details of the movie are kept secret, although it has been announced that the film crew is working with NASA and SpaceX to complete this project. This will be the first Hollywood film ever to film in space.

Liman told Thrillist  last year about being part of the project that "When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let's try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on... you're just a little bit more receptive."

Aside from movie stars, the ISS also opened its doors to the first private astronaut crew earlier this year, Gizmodo  reports. The four spent 15 days in the orbiting laboratory, living and working in a microgravity environment as part of the Ax-1 mission of Axiom Spac.

Like the other astronauts on board, the crew logged in some hours during their stay in the ISS. They admitted in a press conference that they tried to fit too much into their schedules, putting a strain on them and the astronaut crew already abroad at the station.

NASA is already planning for the second private crew to board the ISS in the second quarter of 2023 and has sent out a call for proposals for two more private astronaut missions that could fly as early as late next year. But they stipulated that any missions involving a spacewalk would not be accepted.

Rumors began to swirl in 2020 that Tom Cruise, the actor who loves to do his own stunts, would soon make history, filming the first feature-length movie to be shot in space. According to the BBC , Cruise began talks with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX to produce a movie aboard the International Space Station.

That film is still expected to happen, but Russian filmmakers beat them all to the historical punch, releasing "Vyzov" ("The Challenge"), filmed entirely aboard the ISS in 2021 and released this year.

"Vyzov'' is about Zhenya Belyaeva (Yulia Peresild, "Battle for Sevastopol"), a surgeon who has to go to the International Space Station to perform heart surgery on an ailing cosmonaut who cannot return to Earth. Real-world cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy plays the fictional cosmonaut with a heart problem.

The titular challenge for Belyaeva isn't just performing open heart surgery in zero gravity, it's also being taken seriously by an all-male crew aboard the ISS.

The movie was produced by Russian state media to promote the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, which helped to produce the film. Roscosmos also held the casting call that hired Peresild for the movie. Not only did she have to submit an audition tape like any other actress, she had to undergo the same kind of medical, mental and physical tests as any other cosmonaut.

She was, after all, going to space for real.

Peresild and her understudy had to prepare for the shoot with centrifuge and vibration testing, zero-gravity training flights and parachute training. Their preparations for the film were extensively documented by Russian state media leading up to their departure for the space station.

Anton Shkaplerov, another real-life cosmonaut, accompanied Peresild and director Klim Shipenko to the ISS in October 2021. They filmed "Vyzov" there in 12 days before returning to Earth via a parachute landing in Kazakhstan. The actress and director had to then undergo a 10-day rehabilitation program to readjust to the effects of gravity.

It was "part of a large-scale scientific and educational project, which also includes a series of documentaries to be shot about the rocket and space industry enterprises and specialists involved in the manufacturing of launch vehicles, spacecraft and ground space infrastructure," Roscosmos said in a statement.

Russia invaded Ukraine just a few months after principal photography wrapped on the film. In July 2022, Russia announced it would leave the International Space Station entirely by 2024.

"Vyzov" premiered in theaters across Russia on April 20, 2023, and while it's the first feature-length film shot entirely in space, it's not the only movie shot aboard the ISS.

In 2002, the documentary “IMAX: Space Station,” narrated by Tom Cruise, was released. It was the first 3D film shot in space. In 2012, Richard Garriott, a businessman and space tourist, released the eight-minute-long "Apogee of Fear," the first narrative film shot aboard the ISS.

As of January 2023, SpaceX and Cruise were still planning to make a movie aboard the ISS, and still had plans for making history: the first spacewalk for a feature film.

Tom Cruise was all smiles at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in London Saturday night the day after daughter Suri’s high school graduation in NYC just hours prior.

The “Top Gun” star looked gleeful at Wembley Stadium as he traded friendship bracelets with fans ahead of the singer’s second of three sold-out performances in England’s capital city.

The 61-year-old actor — who rocked dark wash jeans, a white T-shirt and a black jacket — sat among A-list attendees including Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Grant and “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig.

Cruise appeared to be having the time of his life as he — much like Prince William the night prior — danced along to the Grammy winner’s hit song “Shake it Off” with his famous peers in the VIP tent.

Swift’s beau, Travis Kelce, was also among stars as he attended his second London concert in a row with his brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Kylie .

Meanwhile in the US, Cruise’s estranged 18-year-old daughter graduated from LaGuardia High School the day prior.

A beaming Suri was photographed greeting friends outside the venue shortly after they received their diplomas.

She also eagerly took pictures with mom Katie Holmes, who proudly stood by her daughter’s side on the special day.

The teenager dressed for the heat in a white sundress and heels adorned with a flower.

She completed her summery ensemble with a red graduation robe and white sash.

The 45-year-old “Dawson’s Creek” alum, for her part, looked cheerful in beige pleated trousers and a matching collared shirt.

Cruise’s choice to opt out of the graduation does not come as a surprise, as he has been estranged from the teen for years .

Suri even dropped the “Risky Business” actor’s last name in her school’s official graduation pamphlet, opting instead to go by her first and middle names, “Suri Noelle.”

Cruise confirmed in a 2012 deposition that Holmes divorced him “in part to protect Suri from Scientology.”

Followers of the controversial religion are not allowed to associate with nonbelievers.

Suri — who revealed she will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the fall — did not let her father’s absence ruin her final days of high school.

Earlier this week, she was seen having a blast with her friends as they took pictures before they went off to prom.

Suri looked like a spitting image of her mother in a ’90s-inspired floral gown that featured a corseted bodice.

Holmes and Cruise split in 2011 nearly six years after tying the knot.

The “Mission Impossible” actor shares daughter Isabella, 31, and son Connor, 29, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, whom he separated from in 2001 following an 11-year marriage.

Cruise still spends time with his eldest children as they have followed in his Scientology-practicing footsteps.

Tom Cruise Exchanges Friendship Bracelets With Fans During Taylor Swift’s 2nd London Concert

Tom Cruise Exchanges Friendship Bracelets With Fans During Taylor Swifts 2nd London Concert

Tom Cruise , welcome to Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour.

Cruise, 61, was spotted in the VIP section of London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday, June 22, per photos obtained by Us Weekly. As the actor found his seat before the show, he exchanged DIY friendship bracelets with fellow concertgoers. (Swift’s fans have taken it upon themselves to trade beaded baubles at every show as inspired by the lyrics in “You’re On Your Own, Kid.”)

Saturday is Swift’s second Eras concert at Wembley.

“Getting to play Wembley Stadium feels so special because British fans have been supporting me since was, like, 16 or 17 years old and first came out here,” Swift, 34, gushed during Saturday’s Red set. “The shows started out really small and they gradually got bigger and bigger and bigger, and now … there are 88,507 people at Wembley Stadium right now. I mean, that’s the kind of support that I’ll never be able to thank you enough for.”

She continued, “I also have a feeling that we also have people who came in from out of town.”

Cruise, an American actor, was one of the travelers who came for the show, as were other celebrity attendees such as L iam Hemsworth, Greta Gerwig, Hugh Grant, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher . Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce , also stepped out for London Night 2, bringing along his brother , Jason Kelce , and his sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce.

Swift and Travis, 34, have been dating since summer 2023, a couple weeks after the Kansas City Chiefs tight end first saw her Eras show in Kansas City. While Travis hoped to gift Swift with his own friendship bracelet, they were unable to meet. He recalled the rejection on his “New Heights” podcast, which Swift actually heard.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” Swift told TIME in her 2023 Person of the Year profile. “We started hanging out right after that. So, we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for because we got to get to know each other.”

Swift and Travis took their relationship public in September 2023 when the pop star went to her first of 13 Chiefs football games .

“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care,” Swift added to TIME. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”

Travis is equally proud of Swift, attending several of her Eras shows in his NFL offseason.

“Taylor’s shows are unbelievable,” Travis exclusively told Us in May. “If you haven’t been to them, You got to try it.”

Travis has been to both of Swift’s London concerts so far, the first on Friday, June 21, where he met Prince William and his children backstage. A selfie snapped by Swift from the interaction serves as the couple’s Instagram debut, which Travis “liked.”

Boeing's Starliner astronaut taxi spotted at ISS (satellite photo)

An Earth-observing satellite has given us a unique view of Boeing's new Starliner astronaut taxi in space.

Starliner arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on June 6, delivering NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the orbiting lab on a shakeout cruise known as Crew Flight Test (CFT).

A day later, Maxar Technologies' WorldView-3 satellite snapped a striking photo of the ISS and its new arrival, which is prominently featured near the center of the frame.

WorldView-3, which launched in August 2014, usually observes Earth from its vantage point 385 miles (620 kilometers) above our planet. But the new photo shows that the spacecraft can study objects in orbit as well.

"This type of imagery collection, known as non-Earth imaging (NEI), is a breakthrough capability that enables Maxar to support critical space domain awareness missions for government and commercial customers," Maxar wrote in an X post on Wednesday (June 12) that featured the ISS-Starliner photo.

Non-Earth imaging could become a higher and higher priority for the U.S. government and other entities with a large stake in the final frontier over the coming years.

The number of satellites going to orbit has jumped dramatically recently and will likely continue to grow, largely due to the rise of megaconstellations such as SpaceX's Starlink broadband network, which currently consists of more than 6,000 active spacecraft . Keeping tabs on this ever-growing orbital population will likely become increasingly important, and increasingly challenging, for satellite operators.

CFT is the first-ever crewed mission for Starliner, which is scheduled to come back to Earth no earlier than June 18. If all goes well on the mission, the capsule will be certified to fly long-duration astronaut missions to and from the ISS for NASA.

SpaceX already does this with its Crew Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket. Elon Musk 's company is in the middle of its eighth operational astronaut flight to the ISS, known as Crew-8.

Boeing's Starliner capsule is seen docked to the International Space Station in this zoomed-in view of an image captured by Maxar Technologies' WorldView-3 satellite on June 7, 2024.
