This drab, industrial port is the access point to the capital of Kuala Lumpur (KL), an hour (if you are lucky) away by road. Most cruise ships use the Star cruises terminal at Pulau Indah, the terminal building relatively new and inviting. If the ferry is docked at the terminal, cruise ships will use the cargo terminal which is even further out.

The Terminal is equipped with state of the art facilities and amenities for the comfort of passengers and terminal users including air-conditioned buildings, link bridges for embarkation and disembarkation, covered walkways connecting wharfside and terminal, ATMs, foreign exchange counters, restaurants, souvenir and gift shops and duty free outlets. Ample parking space is also available for cars and buses besides counters for taxi service.

Sightseeing:

Port Klang (Malay: Pelabuhan Kelang or Pelabuhan Klang) is the principal port in Selangor, a state of Malaysia. It also serves as the port for the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most developed region where the capital Kuala Lumpur is located. There is not much to see or do in Port Klang itself.

Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is a mangrove covered island off the coast of Port Klang. The entire village on the island is built on stilts, making it an interesting day trip. How to get there: Take a ferry from the Pulau Ketam jetty beside (and not inside) the Passenger Cruise Terminal. There are about 15 trips a day and the journey takes about 30 minutes.

If you want to go to Kuala Lumpur a cruise excursion might be the way to go, as traffic can be horrendous.

The Port Klang bus and taxi terminal is inconveniently located about 1km inland from the port area. One can walk the distance but the heat, noise and pollution may make it an unpleasant experience.

Taxis have fixed rates, posted in the terminal. Expect to pay over $85 for a sightseeing tour to Kuala Lumpur.

The railway station is located 13 km outside the port area. KTM Komuter, Klang Valley's commuter train network, links the station with Klang (20 minutes) and Kuala Lumpur (one hour 10 minutes) with trains once every 15 minutes during peak hours, and once every 20 minutes during off-peak hours. You will need a taxi to the train station. Expect to pay around $20 for the short taxi ride.

In Kuala Lumpur there is a Hop on/off Bus to show you the sights.

Shopping and Food

A shuttle bus often is provided to AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping center 20 minutes away. This mall is large with over 160 stores.

The Malaysian currency is the ringgit.

ATMs are widely available in cities, but do stock up on cash if heading out into the smaller islands or the jungle. Credit cards can be used in most shops, restaurants and hotels, although skimming can be a problem in dodgier outlets.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill.

The sole official language of Malaysia is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia). English is also taught in schools and widely spoken in the cities although in rural areas a little Malay will come in handy.

Port Kelang, also known as Port Klang, is Malaysia's principal port and one of the busiest ports in Southeast Asia. Thanks to its location, on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, it serves as a major gateway for international trade. It connects trade routes between the Far East, Europe, and the Americas. The port was officially opened in 1901 to cater to the booming tin mining industry in the region. Originally its name was Port Swettenham in honor of Sir Frank Swettenham, the first British Resident of the Federated Malay States.

Then, in 1972 the port was renamed Port Klang. Nowadays, Port Klang continues to play a crucial role in Malaysia's trade and logistics sector, driving economic growth and development in the region. Port Klang/Kelang is Malaysia's largest port/principal cargo port and serves the capital city Kuala Lumpur. The city has total area approx 243 km2 (94 mi2) and population around 1,8 million (metro over 7,2 million / Greater Kuala Lumpur). Klang City is among Southeast Asia's fastest-growing metropolis in terms of economy, and Malaysia's economic, cultural and financial center.

Kuala Lumpur City was once home to executive and judicial branches of the federal government, but in early 1999 they were moved to Putrajaya. Here is located Istana Negara - the official residence of Malaysian King. The city is also home to the world's tallest twin buildings - Petronas Twin Towers, an iconic symbol of the country's futuristic development. The towers have tip height of 452 m (1483 ft). Each tower is served by 40 elevators. The project was completed in 1996 at the cost of USD 1,6 billion. The building is owned by KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd. Below the towers is located the shopping mall Suria KLCC and the Petronas Filharmonik Hall.

Port Klang (Pelabuhan Klang, locode MYPKL) is Malaysia's largest seaport, located approx 6 km (4 mi) southwest of Klang Town, and approx 38 km (24 mi) southwest of Kuala Lumpur City. The port is ranked the world's 12th- busiest containership port , as well as the world's 17th-busiest by annual total cargo tonnage.

Currently, Port Klang Authority (PKA) manages 3 seaports in the area (Northport, Southpoint, Westport). Port's total cargo capacity is 109,7 million tons.

• Northport comprises multipurpose port facilities and logistics services. A merger of two Malaysian companies (Kelang Container Terminal and Kelang Port Management), Northport operations also cover Southpoint and the Northport Distripark Sdn Bhd (logistics). In January 2016, MMC Corporation took over the ownership of Northport through its subsidiary company MMC Ports.
• Westport (fka Kelang Multi Terminal) is the passenger (ferry and cruise) port, Port Klang Cruise Centre was inaugurated in December 1995 and has 3 berths, where passenger and naval ships can dock. The cruise terminal was previously managed by Genting Hong Kong /GHK-owned company Star Cruises , then its management took Glenn Marine Group.
• On March 28, 2014, an interim privatization agreement was signed Port Klang Authority, Northport Bhd (subsidiary of MMC Corporation) and the Malaysian government, which enabled Northport Bhd to continue to manage the port until a new agreement is approved. On March 13, 2018, was signed the privatization agreement between the three parties. Northport Bhd received a 30-year concession extension (until 2048) to operate Northport and Southpoint.

In 2017-2018 (September-June), the liner  SuperStar Libra operated 1-3-day short breaks / mini-cruises leaving from 3 homeports - Port Klang,  Penang  (Malaysia) and  Phuket  (Thailand). Weekly were offered 2 roundtrips from Malaysia, including 3-night itinerary (Kuala Lumpur-Phuket-Penang) and 4-night itinerary (Kuala Lumpur- Langkawi Island -Phuket-Penang). The new program (also offering fly-cruise packages) allows tourists in Southeast Asia to have more flexibility to choose a departure port. Each of the 3 turnaround ports is a well-connected port city, especially Kuala Lumpur - a major flight hub in Asia.

On November 1, 2018, Westports Klang handled the world's largest boxship - OOCL United Kingdom (max TEU capacity  21413 containers). The ULCV vessel docked at Container Terminal 8 (new wharf completed in 2017) and was handled by nine  ship-to-shore gantry cranes. The ship call at Westports was part of scheduled Ocean Alliance service NEU1 ( Rotterdam to Xiamen ).

Cruise ships to Port Klang dock at the berths on Pulau Indah Island. On Indah Island live around 20,000 people and houses Malaysia's largest/principal port - Port Klang's West Port.

Two bridges link Pulau Indah to mainland Malaysia - Pulau Indah Expressway bridge and SKVE E26 bridge (connecting Indah to Carey Island and to the FTZ Teluk Panglima Garang (Free Trade Zone).

Indah Island contains a large Industrial Park, Laguna Park (recreational zone), Bandar Armada Putra (housing estate), 4x villages (Perigi Nenas, Sungai Pinang, Sungai Kembong, Teluk Nipah), as well as Pusat Hidrografi Nasional (Malaysian Navy's National Hydrographic Centre).

Port Klang is the western terminus of Federal Highway (linking to Kuala Lumpur). Main roads link the port to Klang Town. Via Klang are also available bus and suburban rail services to Kuala Lumpur City. Electric trains link the port to Klang Town, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Tanjung Malim.

The passenger ferry terminal serves the route to Pulau Ketam. The International ferry terminal links Klang to Indonesia (Kota Tanjungbalai and Dumai).

Maksudnya segala perkara seperti seterika, iron rambut, cooking pot dan seangkatan dengannya adalah dilarang bawa masuk ke kapal. Ini adalah untuk keselamatan anda juga. Jangan risau, mereka ada sediakan khidmat pressing extravaganza untuk 5 helai pakaian dengan harga RM12.00 sahaja.

– Ok saya dah check in ke-2, bagi access card, serah passport dan masuk dalam kapal. Access card ini nyawa anda bila dalam kapal. Macam pengganti IC. Nak masuk bilik kena swap card, nak makan kena swap card, nak karaoke kena swap card, nak beli barang dalam kapal pun kena swap card. Kalau hilang anda kena tingggal dalam kapal selamanya. Haha!

– Star Navigator a.k.a segala aktiviti dalam kapal diselitkan depan pintu setiap pagi. Anda boleh check latest aktiviti or showtime sebelum sampai ke Patong Port which is makan masa 12 jam perjalanan.

– Dekat tengah laut memang tiada line internet. Jadi anda boleh simpan telefon bimbit dan join aktiviti yang disediakan dalam kapal, atau pun boleh beli internet package serendah RM48 untuk 24jam atau pun full package untuk 4 hari RM90.00. Semua charge akan dimasukkan ke dalam card anda.

– Untuk yang akan turun ke Patong Beach Phuket. Anda kena pergi reception counter lepas makan malam untuk dapatkan turn turun. Lagi cepat ambil nombor lagi cepat anda boleh explore Patong Beach. Yang ini boleh ambil package tour ataupun free and easy.

– Saya pilih free and easy. Jadi sampai-sampai sahaja terus cari rumah urut! Thai body massage dekat sini average 300thb ke atas. Jadi memang banyak pilihan. Nak open beach atau pun tertutup. Nak tukang massage lelaki pun boleh perempuan pun boleh. Siap sahaja massage kami window shopping, cuci mata tengok mat/minah saleh hitamkan badan mereka dan shopping burger dan air di 7-E. Tak lupa kacang gajus panggang. Sedapnya! Masa yang diberi untuk balik semula ke kapal adalah jam 09:00 malam waktu Malaysia (Thailand lambat 1 jam dari Malaysia) jadi sesiapa yang lambat, anda akan di charge RM400.00. Andai anda dah puas berjalan, cuci mata atau shopping boleh balik ke kapal bila-bila masa. Transfer boat disediakan 15minit sekali. So no worry. Hilang arah? Jangan risau ada sahaja staff cruise di mana-mana.

Show yang best and midnight movie, 4/5 bintang. – Parking fees dekat Bousted cruise centre rm20. – Air minum : Ada kettle dalam cabin. Tapi saya tak minat sangat air dalam mana-mana bilik hotel jadi memang standby botol mineral. – Star Cruise Gemini ada di perairan Malaysia sehingga May 2019. KUALA LUMPUR: Two individuals have been remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into smuggling activities at Port Klang uncovered by anti-graft authorities.

The four-day remand until June 8 was granted by the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (June 5).

In a recent special operation in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, a special task force led by the MACC detained 19 container lorries suspected of carrying various types of smuggled untaxed goods without proper inspections.

According to sources, initial investigations revealed that the syndicate owned more than 10 forwarding companies used to smuggle imported goods by submitting false tax declarations.

"The results of the investigation conducted over three months found that the modus operandi involved using various forwarding companies registered under the names of individuals unaware of the import and export transactions.

"This was done to deceive the authorities and enable syndicate members to evade any actions against them by claiming they had no connection to the said companies," they said.

The syndicate is believed to be led by a foreign individual with their main office located overseas and has been operating for over 10 years.

"It is estimated that this syndicate manages around 3,000 containers per month. The estimated tax evasion for the 10 years of operation amounts to RM3.5bil based on a minimum tax of RM7,000 for each container.

"To avoid taxation, the syndicate made false declarations using Customs Form 9 by declaring non-taxable items such as wheelchairs and medical supplies," they added.

The investigation also revealed that these 'flying containers' would enter the Public Licensed Warehouse of the Northern Port for only 10 to 15 minutes to deceive the authorities, as these containers did not undergo proper customs inspection and were then distributed throughout the country.

Confirming the remand order, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said a thorough investigation would be conducted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, Anti-Money Laundering Act, Customs Act 1965, and the Inland Revenue Board Act.

"MACC welcomes the co-operation from the Customs director-general and hopes that department heads will take similar steps to curb corruption and losses within their agencies.

"We have identified the individuals involved, including the mastermind believed to be overseas, the company owners, forwarding agents, and customs officers colluding with this syndicate, and we will detain them in the near future.

"We will also seek assistance from foreign agencies to obtain information on the accounts owned by the main mastermind so that appropriate actions can be taken," he said.

A collaboration between the MACC, Customs, and the Inland Revenue Board has successfully uncovered the activities of the largest smuggling syndicate at Port Klang.

It was previously reported that the MACC had successfully dismantled a smuggling and tax evasion syndicate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal (KLIA) Cargo in Sepang, amounting to RM2bil over the past three years.

Shore power for greener cruises

However, it is also a huge addition to the state’s carbon footprint.

Keeping a berthed cruise ship’s engine running just to supply electricity to the cabins also means high fuel consumption.

Due to these facts, Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) has decided to provide power from the shore for the cruise ships.

A total of RM50mil will be spent on this, only the second such project in the Asean region. Singapore was the first port to provide ships with shore power.

The process, called “cold-ironing,” allows berthed ships’ auxiliary engines to be turned off, thus cutting air pollution by 95%.

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan told The Star in an exclusive interview that PPSB would spend RM50mil to set up a power substation on land belonging to the Penang Port Commission (PPC) to supply power to the ships by mid-2025.

“The world is moving towards environmental, social and corporate governance, and shore power will be the requirement of countries as a condition to allow cruise liners to berth,” he said.

According to a study, within the transportation sector, shipping claims third position in carbon dioxide emissions or 11% of the total, trailing closely behind passenger vehicles at 39% and medium to heavy trucks at 23%.

With the increase in global trade and demand for the maritime carriage of goods, he said the sector’s carbon footprint could surge by between 50% and 250% by 2050 if proactive measures are not taken.

Sasedharan said a private company would be given the task of producing electricity for cruise liners.

“Europe is moving away from the cruise tourism business to reduce the carbon footprint. Huge cruise liners are not exactly environment-friendly.

“Imagine around 4,000 passengers landing on shore – it creates a huge carbon footprint. That is why the world’s cruise liners are moving to Asian markets.

“Of course, it’s a boon when cruise liners call on us, but the question is, are we ready for them?”

Sasedharan said many facilities must be ready for cruise ships to come a-calling.

“There are many processes involved in homeporting. Passengers fly in to board the cruise ship and even with a minimum capacity of 4,000, you need 15 chartered flights. Even if they land at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport), they need to board domestic flights to Penang,” he added.

He said currently, Penang was the secondary homeport for Costa cruises, which is homeported in Port Klang.

Sasedharan also said competition in Asia was getting fierce.

“China has opened up and the big liners are going there, which will slice off a percentage of the business in this region. While passengers who board from the Asean region pay RM4,000 per person, liners can ply between China-Japan-South Korea and charge US$4,000 (RM19,000).

“As such, the real spin-off will only be seen if we have liners doing homeporting, and Penang is trying to bring the Swiss-based MSC Group of cruise liners with a 5,000-passenger capacity,” he added.

On the cruise business this year, he said 1.5 million passengers was the target, despite the stiff competition from China.

Sasedharan said the burgeoning Indian market, with 400 million middle-income earners, accounted for about 25% of the 1.7 million passengers last year and this was expected to grow this year.

“We did our RM155mil expansion of SPCT during the Covid-19 pandemic and the berthing area can now even accommodate the world’s biggest cruise ship, ‘Icon of the Seas’.

“Work will begin on a further expansion at the end of this year.

“Disney Cruise will also be here, with its ships having a capacity of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers,” he added.
