Experience the best of Italy with one of these itineraries, with stops in beautiful places like Siena. Shutterstock

Whether it’s your first visit to Italy or you're returning for more, building the perfect itinerary means choosing iconic places you want to see  and under-the-radar destinations you want to explore.

We’ve created five different Italian itineraries, ranging from 5- to 10-day trips, covering the top cities, idyllic islands and southern stretches . Have more time? Slow down and add days at various stops, or add multiple itineraries together to create the perfect two-week or even three-week adventure.

Highlights of Italy

Allow at least 10 days Distance: 930km (577 miles)

From the haunting canals of Venice to Napoli backstreets, this classic tour provides a whistle-stop introduction to Italy's greatest hits . As you work your way down the boot you'll encounter Roman ruins, Renaissance masterpieces, baroque piazzas and mouth-watering regional cuisines in spades.

Venice: 2 days

With its achingly photogenic canals, stunning palazzi (mansions) and slender black gondolas, Venice gets you in the mood. If must-see Piazza San Marco , with its mosaic-encrusted basilica , and Palazzo Ducale are too crowded, seek out exceptional art in Fondazione Querini Stampalia and Peggy Guggenheim Collection . Scour seafood stalls at Rialto Market , bar-hop along Fondamenta dei Ormesini and snack on cicchetti (Venetian tapas).

Next stop:   Take a train from Venice to Bologna (1.5 to 2 hours).

Bologna: 1 day

Italy's culinary capital and home to Europe's oldest university, Bologna has a gloriously preserved medieval core. Some 20 towers loom over the red-brick centro , whose streets are lined with porticoes and crammed with delis, bars and trattorias. Check out the colossal Basilica di San Petronio, admire art in the Pinacoteca Nazionale , and chow down in the busy Quadrilatero district.

Next stop:  Take a train from Bologna to Florence (40 mins).

Florence: 2 days

Two days is not long in Florence , Italy's peerless Renaissance city, but it's enough for a breathless introduction to its signature sights : the Duomo , with its famous red-tiled dome; the Galleria degli Uffizi , home to one of the world's greatest art collections; and, of course, Michelangelo's muscular David in the Galleria dell'Accademia .

Next stop:  Take a train from Florence to Pisa (1 hour).

Pisa: 1 day

Head west to Pisa to see if the Leaning Tower really does lean (spoiler: it does, a lot). The Torre Pendente is the star of a trio of medieval sights on Piazza dei Miracoli , an elegant grassy square 2km (1.2 miles) north of the train station. Alongside the Torre, you can applaud Pisa's pristine 12th-century Duomo and the stubby, cupcake-like Battistero . Squeeze in a walk along the city walls .

Next stop:  Take a train from Pisa to Rome (3 hours).

Rome: 3 days

The Eternal City where all roads lead, Rome has more than enough to keep you occupied for a lifetime . In three days you’ll be able to visit headline sights like the Colosseum , Pantheon and Vatican Museums (home of the Sistine Chapel), while also having time to lap up the colorful street life around Campo de' Fiori and explore the atmospheric Trastevere neighborhood.

Next stop:  Take a train from Rome to Naples (1.25 hours on the fast train, 2.5 hours on the regular line).

Naples: 1 day

With Mt Vesuvius brooding on the horizon, Naples is fiery, fun and endlessly addictive. Where else can you pair electric street art with priceless finds from Pompeii in the ancient-treasure filled Museo Archeologico Nazionale ? Gorge on the world's best pizza in any number of popular pizzerias. End the day on an operatic high with a performance at Teatro San Carlo .

Left: A historic cathedral with an ornate facade; centre: bridge over a river; right: a domed church

Northern grandeur

Allow at least 6 days Distance: 395km (245 miles)

Cut a swathe across northern Italy, taking in aristocratic villas and Renaissance frescoes, contemplating Shakespearian drama and sipping cult wines along the way. From Milan the road winds east, passing through a string of historic towns en route to Padua near the Venetian Lagoon and Adriatic Coast.

Milan: 1 day

Start in style in Milan , Italy's fashion and finance capital. Marvel at the architectural excess of the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper before perusing contemporary art in a former 1910 distillery and browsing designer styles in the boutiques of the Quadrilatero d'Oro . Dine on risotto alla milanese (saffron and bone marrow risotto) and toast the road ahead with a canal-side aperitivo (pre-dinner drink) in the Navigli area.

Next stop: Drive 2.5 hours from Milan to Mantua.

Mantua: 1 day

Embrace Mantua , a prosperous Lombard town renowned for its Renaissance architecture and aristocratic palaces. Chief among these is Palazzo Ducale , the vast residence of the Gonzaga family that ruled the city for centuries. Contemplate the Palazzo’s dazzling frescoes and compare them with the playful images that adorn Palazzo Te , a second Gonzaga palace that was often used for love trysts.

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Mantua to Sirmione.

Sirmione: 1 day

Soak up lake life in Sirmione , on the southern tip of handsome Lake Garda . Walk beneath the crenelated walls of 13th-century Rocca Scaligera and lunch on a vine-covered restaurant terrace. Explore the impressive Roman ruins of Grotte di Catullo , then flop lakeside at Aquaria Thermal SPA .

Detour: Stride out on walking trails around the mountaintop ruins of Rocca di Manerba (2–5 hours).

Nex stop: Drive 45 minutes from Sirmione to Verona.

Verona: 1 day

Dedicate the next day to Verona , the setting for Shakespeare's romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet . Admire archaeological and art treasures in the Museo di Castelvecchio and go to the city’s Roman Arena – if you're visiting in summer, catch an opera performance here. Modern art awaits in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Achille Forti .

Next stop: Drive 50 minutes from Verona to Vicenza.

Vicenza: 1 day

Take to the streets of Vicenza to inspect the trail-blazing designs of 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. His tour de force is La Rotonda , a villa on a hill overlooking the city, but you can also marvel at his work at the Teatro Olimpico and Basilica Palladiana . For a different style, the baroque Palazzo Leoni Montanari has a wonderful collection of Italian art and Russian icons.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Vicenza to Padua.

Padua: 1 day

Amble around Padua , a rich, dynamic university city. Its star turn, for which you’ll need to book ahead, is the Cappella degli Scrovegni , a northern Sistine Chapel showcasing a celebrated cycle of frescoes by Giotto. Afterwards, you can bone up on the city’s prestigious medical history at Musme and join the pilgrims at the Basilica di Sant’Antonio .

Left: a rural scene of Chianti vineyards; middle: a tall striped bell tower; right: a medieval town square

A taste of Central Italy

Allow at least 7 days  Distance: 243km (150 miles)

Rolling hills crowned by medieval towns, verdant vineyards of the Chianti area and Italy’s fourth-largest lake await. Immerse yourself in classic Renaissance scenery on this tour that meanders through southern Tuscany and neighboring Umbria.

Whet your appetite for the road ahead with a couple of days in Florence. Take in the Renaissance masterpieces of the Galleria degli Uffizi and the architectural splendors of the Duomo. Spend some time checking out the street life around Piazza della Signoria and go face to face with Michelangelo’s David .

Next stop : Drive 45 minutes from Florence to Chianti.

Chianti: 1 day

Dedicate day three to pottering about the vineyards and wine estates of Chianti . Stop off for a tasting at Greve in Chianti, the main town in the Chianti Fiorentino (the northernmost of the two Chianti districts), before lunching on prime steak in Panzano in Chianti and admiring contemporary art at the Castello di Ama .

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Chianti to Siena.

Siena: 1 day

With its medieval palazzi and lordly Gothic architecture, Siena is a sight to compare with any in Tuscany. To admire it from above, climb the Torre del Mangia , the slender tower that soars over Palazzo Pubblico and the sloping Piazza del Campo . A short walk away, Siena’s 13th-century Duomo is one of Italy’s greatest Gothic churches.

Next stop: Drive 1 hour from Siena to Lago Trasimeno.

Lago Trasimeno: 1 day

After four days on the road, take a mid-trip time out at Lago Trasimeno . The placid waters of Italy's fourth-largest lake are a soothing sight, especially if enjoyed from the medieval turrets of Castiglione del Lago, one of several laid-back towns draped along its shorelines.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Lago Trasimeno to Perugia.

Perugia: 1 day

The next stop is Perugia, Umbria's regional capital and a lively student city. It's quite a climb to the hilltop center but worth the effort as the Gothic cityscape unfurls before you. Stroll Corso Vannucci and peruse the masterpieces of the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria before adjourning to Piazza IV Novembre and the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo .

Next stop : Drive 30 minutes from Perugia to Assisi.

Assisi: 1 day

To finish off, make the pilgrimage to Assisi . This small cobbled town, a major day-trip destination, is centered on the Basilica di San Francesco , a mighty church complex whose upper church shelters a celebrated fresco cycle by Giotto. Down below, the frescoed, dimly lit lower basilica leads through to St Francis’ tomb .

Left: a sea arch; middle: ancient frescoes and a tiled floor; right: view of a seaside city with a small beach

The south coast

Allow at least 7 days Distance: 110km (68 miles)

From the tumult of Naples to the dreamy seascapes of the Amalfi Coast , this "best-of" summer tour offers world-famous ancient ruins and classical art accompanied by boat rides, island charm and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Naples: 2 days

Kick-off with a blast of urban energy in Naples . Feast your eyes on Pompeiian mosaics and stunning classical sculpture at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale , stop by to see the astonishing Cristo velato  (veiled Christ) statue at the Cappella Sansevero , and tuck into to-die-for pizza in Spaccanapoli, the heart of the city’s historic center.

Detour: Hit the road west on a road trip to uncover the Italian mainland's first Greek settlement and one of the world’s most dangerous supervolcanoes in the Campi Flegrei (factor in an extra day).

Next stop: Take a train from Naples to Pompeii (35 minutes).

Pompeii: 1 day

Catch the Circumvesuviana train and head round the bay to Pompeii . Italy's most complete archaeological site is a unique place showcasing the remains of an entire ancient city caught in its death throes. Walk the city streets and see the world’s first "Beware of the Dog" sign as Mt Vesuvius looms menacingly on the horizon.

Next stop: Take a train from Pompeii to Sorrento (30 minutes).

Sorrento: 1 day

Continue down the coast to the sunny seaside town of Sorrento . There are few sights here; rather, the fun is hanging out on the colorful streets, admiring the bay views and browsing the stores selling ceramics and ornate marquetry. Knocking back a shot of locally made limoncello , a liqueur made from plump Sorrento lemons, is non-negotiable.

Next stop: Take a boat from Sorrento to Capri (25 minutes).

Capri: 1 day

Capri , the most famous of the islands in the Gulf of Naples. Here you can gasp at the otherworldly blue light of the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) and poke around ancient ruins at Villa Jovis . For magnificent seascapes, take the chairlift from Anacapri to the summit of Monte Solaro, the island's highest point.

Next stop: Take a boat from Capri to Positano (30 minutes).

Positano: 1 day

The best way to get to Positano , the Amalfi Coast's most Instagrammable and expensive town, is by sea. As you approach it, you'll see its steeply stacked houses cascade down the hillside in a riot of peaches, pinks and terracottas. Once on dry land, hang out on the beach and stroll its vertiginous streets – a delight to walk at sunrise or sunset – fringed with voguish shop displays.

Next stop: Take a bus from Positano to Amalfi (40mins).

Amalfi: 1 day

The end of the road is Amalfi, the coast's de facto capital with its striking Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea , colorful ceramic shops and busy seafront. It's not a big place so you can take your time strolling around the sun-filled piazzas or taking a hike .

Detour: Head up to Ravello to check out its ravishing gardens and the best views on the coast (3 hours).

Left: An ancient amphitheater; middle: a view of church lit up at night; right: tourists admire ancient ruins

A slice of southeast Sicily

Allow at least 5 days Distance: 297km (185 miles)

Stretching from the black lava streets of Catania to the ancient Greek temples of Agrigento , this Sicilian tour showcases spectacular baroque beauty in the island's gourmet southeast. En route, pass through a string of honey-hued towns set amid citrus and olive groves shot with limestone cliffs and rocky canyons.

Catania: 1 day

Lorded over by Mt Etna, baroque Catania is an inspiring starting point. Soak up the town's distinct black-and-white 18th-century architecture over breakfast at Caffè Prestipino on Piazza del Duomo and take a theatrical mooch around fish market La Pescheria . Don't miss spectacular Chiesa di San Benedetto and the dizzying rooftop climb at Chiesa di San Giuliano on enchanting Via Crociferi.

Detour: Assuming the weather and volcanic activity is game, hike to Mt Etna's four crater summits with a guide (factor in an extra day).

Next stop : Drive 65 minutes from Catania to Syracuse.

Syracuse: 1 day

Birthplace of Archimedes (the mathematician of "Eureka" fame), Syracuse was considered the most beautiful city in the ancient world. Still today, it’s a legendary looker with a stunning central square, Piazza del Duomo , and a magnificent Duomo . Remnants of its earliest days, including a magically intact 5th-century BCE Greek theater, can be found at the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis .

Next stop: Drive 40 minutes from Syracuse to Noto.

Noto: Half day

Noto comes as the first of a trio of baroque towns whose beguiling looks result from rebuilds after an earthquake in 1693. Noto is the belle of the ball, boasting one of Sicily’s most striking streets, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and an eye-catching basilica, Cattedrale di San Nicolò . This beautiful town positively glows in the early evening sunlight.

Next stop: Drive 45 minutes from Noto to Modica.

Modica: Half day

Stick with the baroque theme in Modica , a once-powerful medieval town now best known for its grainy artisan chocolate. Search out Duomo di San Giorgo in upper town Modica Alta. Join locals for an afternoon passeggiata (stroll) on Corso Umberto I; buy a cannolo oozing ricotta at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto and chocolate gelato to die for at Caffè Adamo .

Next stop: Drive 25 minutes from Modica to Ragusa.

Ragusa: 1 day

Fans of the Inspector Montalbano hit TV series might recognize some places in Ragusa . To find these, head to Ragusa Ibla (the historic center) where labyrinthine lanes weave past rock-grey palazzi to Piazza Duomo, a frequent shooting location. From the sloping, sun-drenched square, stairs lead up to the town's signature cathedral, the Duomo di San Giorgio.

Next stop: Drive 2.5 hours from Ragusa to Agrigento.

Agrigento: 1 day

Finish your tour on a high in Agrigento, home to a series of ancient Greek temples – the world's finest outside Greece. Pick of the bunch is the Tempio della Concordia , the headline act in the Valley of the Temples , Agrigento's sprawling archaeological park which encompasses the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas.

Explore Southern Italy

10 days | uncover the many attractions of italy’s puglia region.

italy tour by sotc

Take off on an unforgettable journey down Italy’s rarely visited heel, getting to know another side of this entrancing country. Believe the beauty of Amalfi, unwind in style among the sophisticates of Trani and tour the Roman ruins, baroque churches and whitewashed alleyways of Lecce. Wander among the peculiarly shaped houses of Alberobello, wander the hillside dwellings of Matera and discover the Old Town’s life surrounding Bari's Basilica di San Nicola. Head down and say ciao to Italy’s southernmost slice of the Adriatic.

Trip overview

  • Stroll through the flourishing countryside of the Amalfi Coast and pick lemons straight from the tree.
  • Join the sophisticates of Puglia with a glass of Moscato di Trani and drink to Trani’s Adriatic beauty at a harbour-side bar.
  • Explore the otherworldly Sassi of Matera – stone houses formed from natural grottoes and tufo cliffs overlooking a dramatic gorge.
  • End this Italian adventure sipping limoncello in the tangled streets of Bari’s Old Town.
  • Due to the terrain the means of transportation on this trip is a mix of local trains, private vehicles and public buses. Train travel is a fast way to traverse long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. Trains are comfortable and all have toilets, however can often be quite busy.
  • Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the trains, and up and down stairs at train stations and at hotels, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information. You may want to consider taking a backpack rather than a wheelie bag, however this is up to your personal preference and what you feel more comfortable with.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Additionally, please be aware that July, August and the first half of September is high season along the Southern Italian coast, which means that the local infrastructure is under a lot of pressure with a lot of people in the towns we visit. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.
  • If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip and see more of Italy by starting your travels in Rome. Check out our trip 'Rome to Southern Italy' (trip code ZMSSC). Most departure dates are designed to create this perfect combination trip.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Ciao! Welcome to Italy. Your adventure begins on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Amalfi Coast, in the small town of Minori. The Amalfi peninsula is a land of rocky coasts, cliff-top vistas, azure seas, tiered lemon groves, whitewashed villages clinging to steep cliffs, and bright blue skies. You'll have a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight to meet your local leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive in Minori Town early, why not take a self-guided stroll in search of some gorgeous panoramic views of the coast? Or, you could just plant yourself at a sunny piazza cafe and enjoy a macchiato or a gelato.

  • Hotel in Minori (Amalfi Coast) (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

You have a free day to explore Minori Town and Amalfi Town (just a 15 minute bus ride away) today. If you're after a relaxing walk with a few cultural highlights, stroll from one side of Amalfi Town to the other and pay a visit to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and the Chiostro del Paradiso. If you’re after something more active, maybe head out on a walk through the Valley of Mills. Alternatively, you can take a bus to the Valley of Dragons to reach pretty Ravello – for centuries, its lofty position and sunny, dry climate have made it an appealing place for writers, artists, musicians and travellers. Ravello also boasts two magnificent villas – the superb 11th Century Villa Rufolo, once the home of Wagner, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th Century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno. You could also take a half-day walk along the narrow trail of the famous Sentiero Degli Dei (the Walk of the Gods) through forests and fields of wildflowers, olive groves and vineyards.

  • Hotel in Minori (Amalfi Coast) (1 night) (1 night)
  • Amalfi - Chiostro del Paradiso - EUR3
  • Capri - Hydrofoil Amalfi to Capri - EUR44
  • Ravello - Villa Cimbrone - EUR10
  • Ravello - Villa Rufolo - EUR7

Travel to Italy's east coast to Trani, known as the 'Southern Pearl', a scenic town with a sophisticated feel. Once an ancient trading hub, Trani is a delightfully eccentric port with a white cathedral on the seawall. The crescent-shaped marina is a great place to relax and watch the world go by. With medieval streets bathed in a rarefied light and its own sweet wine, Trani truly feels like stepping back into a 1950s movie set. When you arrive, explore the historic centre and its medieval churches on a walking tour with a local guide. The Old Town points to a time when this was a major port for merchants travelling to the Near East. Later, simply kick back on the waterfront and watch the sophisticates of Puglia clink glasses of Moscato di Trani in cosy bars.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Trani - City Walking Tour with Local Guide

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Today is a free day to explore all that Trani has to offer. You might like to visit the dramatic Cattedrale di San Nicola Pellegrino, one of the most beautiful buildings in southern Italy. Begun in 1099 and taking over two centuries to finish, the soft white-pink limestone Norman cathedral is dedicated to the famously foolish St Nicholas the Pilgrim, whose bones lie in the crypt below the church. Inside, it is astonishingly bright and airy, and the remains of a 12-century mosaic near the main altar set off the simply furnished church. You can also head to the castle built by Frederick II, the king of Sicily, Italy, Germany, Jerusalem and the Holy Roman Emperor in the 13th century. Explore the medieval Jewish quarter, built in all-white stone, stopping by two fine synagogues: the Scola Nova and the Scola Grande. Fishermen sell the day’s catch in the marina, so maybe taste the freshness by heading for dinner and a glass of wine harbourside.

  • Trani - Cathedral - Free
  • Trani - Castello di Trani - EUR7
  • Trani - Cathedral Bell Tower - EUR5
  • Trani - Synagogue of Scolanova - Free

Head south and delight in the baroque architecture and atmosphere of Lecce. Lecce's elaborate ornamentation is elevated to dizzying heights, presenting the casual viewer with a feast for the senses. Sumptuous palazzi (mansions), a defensive main square, Roman ruins and magnificent allegories dancing across ornate facades make Lecce a swoon-worthy sight for any traveller. The university gives the town a lively feel, and there are little boutiques, antique shops and delicious delis to explore.

  • Polignano - Stopover enroute to Lecce - EUR3

Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

Today is a free day for you to explore Lecce. If open, maybe step beneath the city and see the restored Roman amphitheatre excavated in the 1930s. Built in the 2nd century AD, the remarkably intact horseshoe-shaped theatre seated 15,000 people. Overlooking the arena is the Colonna di Sant'Oronzo, a statue of Lecce's patron saint mounted upon a Roman column. Presented to Lecce from Brindisi, this column once stood at the terminus of the Via Appia that ran from Rome to Brindisi. The fascinating Basilica Di Santa Croce inspires varied reactions – its heavily decorated façade of sheep, dodos, cherubs and monsters is a cacophony to some, while others are drawn to the lavish brilliance. For another baroque experience, head to the Piazza del Duomo. Used in the past as a defence against invaders, the square's pleasant openness is bordered by a 12th-century cathedral, a 68 m-high bell tower, a 15th-century Episcopal Palace and an 18th-century Seminario. In the afternoon, meet up with the group again for an aperitivo with local specialties, such as friselle, taralli, puccia, bombette and burrate.

  • Lecce - Aperitivo with Local Specialties
  • Lecce - Roman Amphitheatre - EUR6
  • Lecce - Castello di Carlo V - EUR8
  • Lecce - Basilica di Santa Croce - Free
  • Lecce - History Museum - EUR5
  • Lecce - Museo Faggiano - EUR5

Travel by private transport to a local masseria to meet an olive oil producer, who will show you how the techniques have changed over the millennia before you're treated to a tasting. Some olive trees here are thought to be close to 3000 years old, and the farm has been active since Roman times. Then head to Ostuni and explore its narrow streets and white houses, before continuing to Alberobello, set in a landscape of olive trees and low walls dotted with unique dwellings. People flock to Alberobello to marvel at the beehive-shaped Trulli (singular trullo), which are small, dry-stone houses built from local limestone in the 14th century. The origins of the buildings are unclear, although it's possible the mortar-less dwellings were created to be easily dismantled in a feudal tax evasion scheme. Wander the Old Town quarter of Rione Monti, where thousands of Trulli (and souvenir shops) rise over the hill or head over to Rione Aia Piccola and see Trulli family dwellings. See religious and mystical symbols on the roofs, the differently shaped spires, and head to the Church de Sant’Antonio, built in the style of a huge trullo.

  • Alberobello - Olive Oil Mill Visit and Tasting

Transfer by private mini bus to Matera. The extraordinary sight of Matera's Old Town gives a haunting, bittersweet insight into ancient life. One of the oldest cities in existence, Matera's otherworldly drawcard is the sassi (singular sasso) – stone houses formed from natural grottoes and tufo cliffs overlooking a dramatic gorge. Its resemblance to Jerusalem has attracted film directors of biblical epics, but its dark interiors were the scene of shameful poverty in the mid-20th century. Duck down into the sassi through the knot of staircases and alleyways that snake through the limestone ravines, and take a guided tour to appreciate both its ancient and modern history. With over 3000 habitable caves, some dating as far back as the 8th century BC, the sassi are filled with stunning frescoed rock church complexes, exhibits recreating inhabited caves, and even a contemporary sculpture museum. The sassi are undergoing extensive restoration, and it’s now the one place in the world where you can eat at a restaurant inside a 9000-year-old dwelling! Tonight, you’ll stay in accommodation with balconies overlooking the sassi.

  • Matera - Ipogeo Underground Cistern
  • Matera - City Walking Tour with Local Guide
  • Matera - Museo della Scultura Contemporanea - EUR5
  • Matera - Cathedral - Free
  • Matera - Casa Noha Multimedia Exhibit - EUR7

Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.

This morning is free for you to further explore the narrow alleyways and caves of Matera before boarding a local train to Bari at around lunchtime. Sitting on a small peninsula in the Adriatic Sea overlooking Greece, Bari is the prosperous capital of Puglia. The tangled streets of its Old Town, Bari Vecchia, conceal Romanesque churches, a riotous market, elegant medieval piazzas and a Swabian castle. The Basilica di San Nicola was built to hold the relics of St Nicholas, which were stolen from Turkey by local Bari fishermen and have made the city a place of pilgrimage since 1087. The relics are also the mainstay of Bari's biggest annual celebration, the Festa di San Nicola. The stone walls are lovely to walk around, with the sea lapping on one side and the medieval town on the other. Bari is also the perfect place to see out your last night on this trip and have a group meal by the harbour, sampling local limoncello and some of the seafood that the city is famous for.

  • Bari - Pinacoteca Provinciale - EUR5
  • Bari - Basilica di San Nicola - Free
  • Bari - Cattedrale di San Sabino - Free
  • Bari - Castello Svevo - EUR8

If you are considering a trip to Italy in October, rest assured —it’s one of the best times of year to visit. Even travel guru Rick Steves cites October as a month  that combines  convenience with pleasant weather .

Italy is consistently ranked among the world’s most popular tourist destinations. With all its culinary, cultural, architectural, and historical charms, it is never totally devoid of tourists.

But if you have a flexible schedule and can travel during one of the shoulder seasons, October can be an ideal time to go. You have missed the high season (and higher costs) from May to September, and the hordes of summer tourists waiting to visit museums and historical sites are (mostly) gone.  Yet the weather remains generally mild, with sunny days and crisp evenings.

Although October travel is becoming increasingly popular, you’ll encounter fewer tour groups than in the high seasons, allowing you to enjoy a more authentic experience.

The Lures of Italy in October

Serving of gnocchi garnished with white truffles

By October, the oppressive heat and humidity have diminished, making touring much more comfortable. And if you’re heading south, the weather may still be warm enough to enjoy the beaches.

Fewer tourists mean shorter queues at popular attractions, greater ease in making reservations at popular restaurants, museums, historic sites, and entertainment venues, and lower prices for flights, auto rentals, and accommodations.

Food and wine lovers will delight in the bounty of mushrooms, truffles, and olives and the seasonal wine harvests and festivals throughout the month.

Yummy Food Festivals

October is an incredibly wonderful time for food lovers to visit Italy. Many  food festivals ( sagre)  take place in different towns and regions throughout the country, each focused on a particular food or dish associated with the area.

Here are just a few examples:

Pasta with porcini mushroom sauce in Folllina (Veneto) (credit: JErome Levine)

  • Visitors can indulge in white truffles at the International Fair of the White Truffle in Alba and attend the National Chestnut Fair dedicated to chestnuts (both in the Piedmont region).
  • The Porcini Mushroom Festival, celebrating the King of the Woods, is held in Casal di Pari, in the province of Grosseto, and a Porcini Mushroom and Chianina Meat Festival takes place in Castelfranco di Sotto, in the province of Pisa (both in Tuscany).
  • The Pizzocchero d’Oro Festival celebrates a unique pasta shape made in the town of Teglio in the province of Sondrio, and the ancient village of Tirano (also in Sondrio) holds an Apple and Grape Festival (both in Lombardy).
  • MortadellaBo, the festival of mortadella, takes place on Piazza Maggiore in Bologna (Emilia Romagna), its namesake city.

Judges at Mortadella Festival on Piazza Maggiore

Because the dates of these festivals vary from year to year, it’s prudent to check with the regional tourism bureaus to learn more about these and other food festivals. (More information about some of these festivals is provided below).

In addition, October is a great time to go foraging for mushrooms or truffle-hunting in the forests.

Weather in Italy in October

Beach in Diano Marina (Liguria) in October

Average temperatures in Italy in October range between 45°F and 75℉, varying widely by destination. The weather in the south is usually warmer than in the north , but we even caught some beachgoers in  Diano Marina (Liguria) in October. The weather will likely be milder at the beginning of the month than at the end.

Sicily is one of the warmest regions. S icilians consider October to still be beach season, and securing lounge chairs and umbrellas is likely easier. ( Mondello Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Sicily.)

The moderate weather is perfect for those who love the outdoors; it can be ideal for hiking or trekking in the countryside except at high altitudes.

While it may rain, there is less rain than in the spring and far less precipitation than in November through April (November is the rainiest month). Southern regions, like Sicily and Naples, tend to have less rain in October.

Like the U.S., the weather varies considerably depending on which of Italy’s 20 regions you visit. For example, in Milan (in the north), temperatures average between 50℉ and 66℉; in Bari (located in the south), they range from 61℉ and 71℉. (Read about some of the hidden gems of Milan )

And like everywhere else, there are fluctuations from year to year. With global warming, Italy, too,  has seen increases in average temperatures and more extreme weather conditions.

What to Pack for Visiting Italy in October

Easy packing: one of the benefits of a travel capsule wardrobe

Because the weather can vary, it’s best to dress in layers and be prepared for fluctuations from day to day and even over the day. Packing a cardigan, denim jacket, or shawl is a good idea if the weather gets chilly.

Men may be comfortable with a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and cardigan (or travel vest ) for extra warmth . Because it won’t be too cold, there’s no need to pack heavy overcoats or boots.

With the weather becoming increasingly unpredictable worldwide, women should bring a few lightweight tops and capri pants in case it turns unseasonably warm. We always take rain jackets and umbrellas wherever we go—just in case.

October holidays in Italy

Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi (pixabay)

Two national holidays fall in October:

  • Columbus Day, October 12; and
  • United Nations Day, October 24th.

On these days, offices and most stores are closed, so keep this in mind as you plan your visit. In beach resorts or other summer getaways, hotels and restaurants may have closed for the season, so be sure to check openings before you go.

The Feast of Saint Francis (October 4) isn’t a public holiday, but it is observed in many churches, particularly in Perugia. While Halloween is not a traditional Italian holiday, some themed events are often organized for children.

Italy in October: Best places to go

Depending on your interests, no destination in Italy is really off-limits in October, although some have more special appeals than others. Here are some suggestions.

Piedmont in October

Prize-winning white truffle at the Sant'Agata festival

Piedmont is known for its International White Truffle Fair , held in Alba every weekend in October. Here, visitors can learn about and taste this gastronomic delicacy. There are chefs’ dinners, cooking classes, wine tastings, and folklore events.

It’s a lovely time to stroll along the Po River , which runs through Torino (known as the country’s chocolate capital), and soak in the city views from another perspective. There are so many  things to do in Turin , and no visit to Turin is complete without a stop at the Royal Palace of Turin, which houses a magnificent collection of art and artifacts from the House of Savoy family. It’s a great time to see the autumn foliage as well.

Piedmont, home of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wine regions, offers truffle tastings and wine and chocolate events during the month of October.

Although prices drop in November, you’re more likely to hit rainy weather.

Sicily in October

Mondello Beach in Sicily

Sicily in October is a good option for beach lovers. The water temperature may even be warm enough to swim, and the risk of rain is relatively low. Average daily temperatures range between 19ºC and 24ºC.

One appealing option is Mondello Beach , a favorite of many locals. Liberty-style villas and an architecturally stunning bathing station (now housing a restaurant and bar) frame the water. Another seaside favorite is the beach at Cefalu.

The less crowded season is also a great time to explore the multicultural treasures of cities like Palermo, Taormina, and Siracusa. Established in Palermo in 2006, Le Vie dei Tesori is a unique cultural festival that transforms cities and small villages across Sicily into widespread museums with concerts, art exhibitions, and more. In October, visitors can participate in a series of events in Catania, Sciacca, Alcamo, Ragusa (the setting o f Detective Montalbano ), Scicli, and Noto.

Tuscany in October

View of the Arno River from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Tuscany

Tuscany is filled with cultural treasures, including museums, churches, medieval architecture, and well-preserved small towns and villages. The countryside offers verdant landscapes filled with olive trees and vineyards with a tapestry of fall colors as their backdrop.

While large cities—like Florence, Siena, Lucca, and San Gimignano—are crowded with tourists in summer, the crowds thin out a bit in October when kids are back in school, making it a perfect time to tour and visit museums. The Festival of Santa Reparata is held on October 8th each year,  Festival of Santa Reparata . This major historical and cultural event includes a parade through the city’s historical center.

The Lucca Comics & Games convention, the largest comic festival in Europe, is traditionally held at the end of October.

Some of our favorite smaller towns to visit in Tuscany include San Gusme and Castellina in Chianti (both in the Chianti region), and the beach resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio , both on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

View of the horizon from San Gusme

Many food festivals are held in October throughout the region. The olive harvest that produces the region’s extra virgin olive oil and the white truffle season (in San Miniato) begin.  Vino novello , a young and fruity red wine, begins to appear before its traditional release on Saint Martin Day in November.

Terre di Pisa is a relatively young (and still undiscovered) wine region in Tuscany that is worth exploring.

Val d’Aosta in October

Aosta Valley in autumn

Val d’Aosta , Italy’s smallest region, is slightly off the beaten track. This has left its quaint village more authentic and unspoiled by mass tourism.

Weather in the Aosta Valley can be glorious in October. The fresh mountain air lures hikers who soak in breathtaking mountain views of the valley with its fall foliage on display.

The region is known for its Alpine foods and wines, including more than 100 varieties of cheese, including the prized DOP Fontina . Many people say that the fondue in Val d’Aosta is the best to be had.

Fall is the chestnut and mushroom (especially Porcini) season and the time for the Vendemmia , the grape harvest. On the last Sunday in October, Chatilion, the region’s “honey capital,” hosts a festival dedicated to its delicious honey . In October, there are also apple festivals in the town centers at Antey and Gressan.

Another unique festival held in Val d’Aosta in October is the Black Bread Festival ( Lo Pan Ner ). Historically only a few families could produce the bread at different times of the year, which involved women kneading the flour, men baking, and children awaiting the tasting.

Umbria in October

Porchetta at a butcher shop in Bevagna, province of Perugia, Umbria

Umbria is called the green heart of Italy . Its hills are covered with more than seven million trees,  yielding five different types of olives. In October, the region boasts an average of five hours of sunshine each day.

While the month of October is low season for tourists, one exception is the town of Assisi, where the country’s largest religious procession, the Feast of St. Francis, takes place.

Each year, the EuroChocolate festival is held in Perugia (the region’s capital and the birthplace of Perugina chocolate ). The event brings chocolate art displays, sculpting, tastings, and street performances to the city. Held since 1933, it is one of the largest chocolate festivals in Europe.

White truffles are showcased at the autumn food festival at the end of October in the small medieval town of Gubbio (featured in the long-running Don Matteo TV series). The festival includes cooking events and meetings with starred chefs. Many religious festivals also honor St. Francis of Assisi on his feast day, October 4.

Puglia in October

Ostuni (the white city) in Puglia (credit: Jerome Levine)

Puglia, l ocated at the heel of Italy’s boot, has become one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.

In October, the temperature is pretty mild. There is abundant sunshine most of the time, but there can be some rain. It’s a nice time to visit some of the interesting towns and villages in the region, including Ostuni, Locorotondo , Trani, Martina Franca, Galatina , and Alberobello (home of the trulli ).

Wine lovers can enjoy winery visits and tastings of some of the region’s special wines (such as Rosato, the pink wine of Puglia) during the low season when producers have more time to spend with them.

Emilia Romagna in October

Tortelli rossi al tartufo (red ravioli with truffle shaving) at Patrizia in Bologna, Emilia Romagna

October is typically the driest month in Emilia Romagna, the region known for having some of the best foods in Italy.

In the fall, the region is a foodie’s paradise with food fairs and festivals. The Castel del Rio Chestnut PGI Fest is held every Sunday in the village center. At the beginning of October, the Mostra del Fungo e del Tartufo e Festa dell’Uva (the mushroom and truffle exhibition and grape festival) is held in the streets of the ancient village of Bobbio.

Every year, Tartufesta (the white truffle festival) is held between October and November in the Appennino Bolognese (the hilly area around Bologna). If you are a truffle lover, this National White Truffle Fair in Sant’ Agata Feltria is an event not be be missed. The fragrance of white truffles permeates the air as vendors proudly display truffles and other seasonal products. You can even sit at long tables under a tent and enjoy a prepared meal with truffles.

Under the tent at the White Truffle Fair

Music lovers flock to the cities of Parma and Buseto from mid-September to mid-October for the Verdi Festival , and motor enthusiasts can attend the second round of the ACI Racing Weekend in Imola.

No visit to Emilia Romagna would be complete without a stop in Bologna , the region’s capital city. Although the Holy Day is on November 1, a host of weekend activities take place preceding it, both in the city and surrounding villages.

Liguria in October

Hills of Seborga (impera province) Liguria in autumn

Wedged between the mountains and the sea, Liguria is known for its agricultural products and seafood. Most tourists flock to the coastal towns of Portofino, Cinque Terre, and Sanremo, but more than 200 small towns and villages are tucked into the mountains further inland. Visiting after the prime tourist season allows you to experience these towns and villages like the locals.

While the weather in Liguria in October is generally sunny, it can get breezy with some rain towards the end of the month.

In the second half of the month, a Science Festival is held in Genoa with exhibitions, workshops, shows, and conferences geared to adults, children, and researchers. In October, the Castagneta and Polenta (chestnut and polenta) festival in Cogoleto showcases Ligurian food delicacies and desserts.

There are also anchovy festivals in several small seaside towns like Laigueglia in the province of Savona.

The Ligurian hill town of Triora, known as the City of Witches, hosts a yearly Halloween festival.

Veneto in October

Porcini mushrooms in Follina (Treviso) Veneto

An easy day trip from Venice, the weather in the Veneto region can be quite pleasant in October, averaging 65℉. Located in the northeast, Veneto is one of the major wine-producing regions of Italy. In October, the trees and vines are adorned with fall colors.

Visitors to Veneto can enjoy the white truffle and porcini mushroom season in October. It also isn’t too late to see grape harvests (particularly for red and late-harvest wines) during this period. The wine region has more than 90 producers in 18 municipalities that offer tastings and vineyard tours by appointment.

Asolo (dubbed the Pearl of Treviso and City of 100 Horizons) is perfect for those who love art, history, architecture, and wine.

The Vicenza Opera Festival , held in the Teatro Olimpico ,  is held in  Vicenza (about 35 minutes from Venice by train). It features opera, ballet,  and classical music. Other performances take place throughout the year. This is the city where you can see all the architectural masterpieces of Andrea Palladio.

If you are a fan of architecture, history , and/or culture, the  Regional Institute of Venetian Villas  and the  Association for Venetian Villas sponsor a two-day national event that tells the story of villas through visits, tastings, workshops, readings, performances, conferences,  and exclusive meetings.

Deciding where to go in Italy in October

There are so many places to go that choosing “the” place depends on where you’ve been and what you want to experience. Rain or shine, it’s hard to make a mistake when visiting Italy.

What will air travel be like?

TripIt, my  favorite travel organizing app, released a report on  October bookings , which suggests that October travel to Italy is becoming more popular than in years past.

Reviewing prospective October bookings by TripIt users and comparing them to 2022 volumes, they found a 64% increase in bookings to top destinations (such as Rome in Italy). One takeaway: To avoid hordes of tourists, choose smaller towns.

A few last pieces of advice: The timing of the grape harvest, which generally takes place in September and October, varies from place to place and depends on weather conditions. So, confirm the harvest dates with any wineries you want to visit. Here are some of the regional wine tastings and tours to consider.

Similarly, the dates of some religious and cultural festivals fluctuate from year to year. Local tourism offices can provide up-to-date information.

Also, if you are planning to travel, don’t forget that Daylight Savings Time (DST) in Italy ends on the last Sunday of October, so you must set back your watch.
