  • Another alternative method is to restore deleted Safari tabs by accessing the History tab.
  • And, finally the Shake to Undo feature also allows you to recover recently closed Safari tabs on iPhone.

Restore Accidentally Closed Safari Tabs on iPhone

Did you accidentally close all tabs open in Safari on your iPhone? If you did, you’re not alone. Several people, including myself, have encountered this issue at least once. However, it is nothing to worry about as you can easily recover any deleted Safari tab. Read along to learn how to Restore accidentally closed Safari tabs on iPhone.

How To Recover Deleted Safari Tabs on iPhone

Since Safari is the primary web browser for most of us, we have multiple tabs open within the browser. Some of us leave these tabs open as we need to revisit them later. Now, if you accidentally delete or close all of these tabs in Safari, do not panic. Recovering accidentally closed Safari tabs isn’t all that difficult.

Many people accidentally close tabs and you can find several posts regarding this issue on Apple’s Discussion Community page . Therefore, to solve this issue, we’ve put together some of the best troubleshooting methods to help you recover deleted Safari tabs on your iPhone.

1. Restore Accidentally Closed Tabs from Recently Closed Tabs List in Safari

The Safari browser on iPhone has a Recently Closed Tabs list hidden in plain sight within the browser. Not many people are aware of this feature and hence panic when they accidentally close multiple Safari tabs on their iPhones. However, we will help you navigate to the Recently Closed Tabs list and reopen all the tabs you accidentally closed on Safari.

Time needed:  1 minute

Steps to reopen websites from the Recently Closed Tabs list in Safari on iPhone.

Once the tab opens, you can continue browsing. If you want to reopen several tabs that you accidentally closed, you will have to repeat this step multiple times.

2. Restore Deleted Safari Tabs From Safari History

Another simple method to recover accidentally closed tabs is to restore them from History. Like most browsers, Safari also stores your browsing history in the History tab. However, note that if you accidentally closed tabs in the Private Browsing Mode, then they cannot be restored.

This is because Apple does not store browsing history for any activity in the Private Browsing Mode on iPhone. If they did, the Private Browsing Mode wouldn’t be that private. But if you’re on Mac, there’s a workaround that allows you to view Private Mode browsing history .

With that said, here’s how to recover deleted Safari tabs from Safari History on your iPhone.

  • Open the Safari browser on your iPhone.
  • Tap the Bookmarks icon located below the address bar.
  • Here, tap the History tab (clock icon).
  • Next, tap the page you want to reopen.
  • Alternatively, you can also tap and hold and then select the Open in New Tab or Open in New Tab Group option if you do not want to load the link on the current tab.

3. Shake Your iPhone To Undo Changes and Recover Accidentally Closed Tabs in Safari

Have you ever tried the Shake to Undo feature on your iPhone? Chances are, you have used this feature to correct typing errors. However, the Shake to Undo feature offers a lot more and can help you undo several accidental changes, including the ability to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on iPhone.

Apart from reopening accidentally closed tabs, the Shake to Undo feature also works in other apps and services. Here are a few examples of using your iPhone’s Shake to Undo feature.

  • Creating, editing, renaming, or deleting files or folders in the Files app.
  • Creating, editing, or deleting events in the Calendar app.
  • Editing or deleting images or videos in the Photos app.
  • Rearranging apps and widgets on the Home Screen.

We understand that this feature might be helpful you right now. Because a few minutes must’ve passed since you accidentally closed these tabs. Regardless, it might come in handy in the near future. Therefore, here’s how to use the Shake to Undo feature to restore accidentally closed tabs in Safari on iPhone.

  • The moment you accidentally close Safari tabs, quickly shake your iPhone . We suggest using the hammering motion as that is what seems to work for us.
  • The iPhone will display an Undo Close Tab pop-up. Tap the Undo button.
  • The closed tab will be restored and you can continue browsing.

Shake Your iPhone To Undo Changes and Recover Accidentally Closed Tabs in Safari

If the Shake to Undo feature is not working on your iPhone, you might have accidentally disabled it. Here’s how to enable the Shake to Undo feature on iPhone.

  • Open the Settings app and tap the Accessibility option.
  • Select the Touch option located under the Physical and Motor menu.
  • On the next screen, enable the Shake to Undo toggle.

Prevent Accidentally Closing Safari Tabs

Why do you have multiple tabs open in Safari? Mostly, it might be because you visit those sites often and do not want to search for them every single time. However, navigating through hundreds of tabs to revisit a website isn’t very easy. While doing so, you might accidentally close all of the open tabs too.

Therefore, in order to prevent accidentally closing Safari tabs on iPhone, we suggest bookmarking tabs you visit frequently. This will streamline the entire process of navigating websites you visit often and in turn save time. Here’s how to bookmark tabs in Safari on your iPhone.

  • Head to the website you want to bookmark.
  • Now, tap and hold on the Bookmark icon below the address bar.

Bookmark Websites to Prevent Accidentally Closing Safari Tabs

  • On the next screen, you can edit the Name and the Link of the website .
  • If you want to change the location of the Bookmark, tap the option below Location and select the Bookmark Folder of your choice.

Add Bookmark to the correct folder and save the changes

Conclusion

We hope you were able to restore all the accidentally closed Safari tabs on your iPhone. I can completely relate to your pain of losing all the open tabs. It has happened to me in the past too. If you have any other doubts or are aware of other methods that can help restore accidentally deleted tabs in Safari, please let us know in the comments below.

Check Tab Groups & Safari Profiles

In Safari, you can create tab groups to separate all of your different tabs into specific groups. For example, if you have several recipe tabs open, you could place these tabs into a group called "Dinners." Additionally, iOS 17 and newer include a feature called Safari Profiles, allowing you to separate your browsing sessions into different profiles.

Having too many tabs open in Safari can affect its performance and lead to an inefficient browsing experience. While you can close tabs individually in Safari, depending on the number of open tabs, it can become quite tedious and time-consuming.

Fortunately, you can close all tabs on your iPhone or iPad in one go. In this article, I will show you all the possible ways to do it.

How to close all Safari tabs on iPhone and iPad

It’s pretty easy to close all your Safari tabs on iPhone and iPad. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Scroll down and select Safari .
  • Tap Close Tabs .

Select Safari tap close tabs select from options

How to close similar Safari tabs at once on iPhone

  • Open the tab switcher screen in Safari.
  • Tap the top of the screen to reveal the search bar .
  • Type a word you think would be common on all the tabs you want to close, and you’ll see all the open tabs that match this word.

How to close all Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups

Tab Groups is a Safari feature that lets you keep your tabs organized using folders. If you’ve used it to keep all similar tabs organized in one Tab Group, deleting that Tab Group will close all open tabs inside it. Here’s how:

  • Go to the tab switcher screen in Safari.
  • Long-press one of the tab thumbnails.

Long press tab thumbnail select close other tabs

Signing off…

That’s it. The above methods should help you declutter Safari on your iPhone or iPad and give you a clean slate to start fresh.

Moving forward, be sure to use Tab Groups or profiles in Safari to keep your tabs organized and avoid having an overcrowded stack of tabs again.

How to clear the cache on your iPhone (and why you should)

How many tabs are open on your mobile browser right now? Go ahead, check -- you might be surprised by what you find.

Americans spend over five hours a day on their smartphones. That's over five hours of your phone potentially accessing, retrieving, and saving cache and cookies, which can negatively impact your iPhone's storage space .

What is cache?

Cache is the temporary storage of some data, like parts of a website from the last time you visited it, for example. Browser cache is content from a website that is stored on your phone during a browser session to help the browser execute faster the next time you visit that page.

Also:  How to clear Google search cache on Android

Cache data can slow down your phone's overall browsing performance, however, since it takes up storage space on your device, so it's good to clear it out regularly. In this article, we mainly focus on clearing web browser cache on an iPhone, but you should know that other types of cache include mobile app cache and CPU cache.

How to clear cache on iPhone

What you'll need: Everything you need to clear your browser cache is within the iPhone's settings app or the Safari app, so grab your iPhone to get started.

Keep in mind that clearing the cache can clear private data, which can close all open tabs in Safari. This is also likely to log you out of all your websites, prompting you to sign in again the next time you open them.

How do I clear the cache from Chrome on iPhone?

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser, it may have a substantial amount of data stored on your device, which could also slow down performance.

To clear the cache in Chrome, open the Google Chrome app and follow these steps:

  • Tap  Settings .
  • Go to  Privacy and Security .
  • Select  Clear Browsing Data .
  • Select the time from which to delete the data (if you want to delete all your browsing history, choose All Time ).
  • Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.
  • Confirm by tapping  Clear Browsing Data  at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Done when you've deleted the Chrome cache.

Also: Apple releases iOS 17.4 with podcast transcripts, new emojis, and EU app store changes

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How can I browse on Safari without history?

If you're learning how to clear cache on an iPhone, you may also be wondering if there's a way to use Safari without saving any browsing history. You can turn on Private Browsing by following these steps:

  • Open  Safari .
  • Tap on  Tabs .
  • Choose Private .

You can also enable private browsing by going to your iPhone Settings, finding Safari, and toggling on the private option.

How do I clear my app cache on my iPhone?

To clear the app cache from your iPhone Settings app, you can either delete the app and reinstall it, offload it, or try to clear the cache from within the app. Unfortunately, iOS apps don't have consistent settings across the board that would allow you to clear the cache of every app.

Also: Apple warns: Don't put your wet iPhone in rice. Do this instead

Apps like TikTok and CapCut, for example, have options to Clear Cache within their respective settings. Amazon lets users delete their browsing history, while the Reddit app can clear local history. It all depends on what the app's settings let you do.

Is "clear cache" the same as offloading?

Not exactly, though app offloading can help if your phone is slowed down by low storage. To offload an app  means to uninstall an app without deleting any documents or data associated with it.

Also: Apple secures iMessage against threats from the future

To offload an app, go to  Settings , then  General , choose  iPhone Storage  and select the app to offload, then tap  Offload App . If you ever download it again, you'll pick up where you left off for that app.

Are cookies and cache the same thing?

Cookies and cache are not the same. Cookies are data files that websites send to your phone, including things like saved passwords to keep you logged into an account or even the website preferences from the previous time you visited.

Also: I tested the best Mint alternatives, and this is my new favorite money app

Though they do sound harmless, cookies can also track how you browse the internet. They monitor patterns in your browsing and search history, even seeing what you clicked on or what your mouse hovered over. Ever made an innocuous search on Amazon only to find ads for it on all the apps you use? Cookies likely made that possible.

Can I block cookies on my iPhone?

While you can block cookies on Safari, the ranks are divided on whether you should. Blocking cookies entirely means that websites won't be able to get information from you, but it also means that some websites may not even work correctly on your browser. A lot of users actually enjoy a more personalized browsing experience, so cookies are a good thing for them.

If you'd like to block cookies in Safari, follow these steps:

  • Go to  Settings  and select  Safari .
  • Tap on the toggle next to  Block All Cookies .

There are also third-party extensions that help you block cookies and trackers in Google Chrome, like Ghostery and Disconnect .

How do I check iPhone storage?

On an iPhone, Settings can show you what's taking up most of your media storage, like photos, videos, and music. You can also see what each particular app's storage consumption is, which includes temporary data. To view the details of your iPhone's storage space, follow these steps:

  • Go to the iPhone Settings .
  • Tap on General .
  • Select iPhone Storage .
  • Scroll through to find the app you're looking for.
  • Tap on the app to view storage status and options.

Unfortunately, you can't clear your iPhone cache for third-party apps by going into your Settings app, but this gives you a visual of your iPhone's storage and the option to delete or offload apps.

Also: Here's the fastest way to declutter your iPhone and free up Gigabytes of space

When you look at your device's storage space, you'll probably see recommended steps you can take to optimize your iPhone's storage, like offloading unused apps.

You're browsing the web on your  iPhone , reading about Apple's iPhone 16 event when you notice that things look a little off. Images are misshapen, some information is missing. You might be wondering what's going on.

Instead, you should be asking: When was the last time you cleared your cache?

CNET Tech Tips logo showing the outlines of multiple devices

Your browser cache stores website data for faster retrieval, which can keep things a little snappier when everything matches up. But over time page elements might change -- the site might add new images, change layouts, etc. -- and that's when problems can pop up.

You can think of your browser cache like a mini fridge. It's a place where you can store items for the convenience of easier retrieval -- you don't need to trek all the way back to the kitchen for every item. However, that mini fridge gets cluttered over time, to the point where it might be difficult to find what you want or the items in the fridge have gone bad. That's why it's good to clear out your cache ( and your actual fridge ) every so often.

Whether you use  Chrome , Safari or other browsers on your iPhone, your cache builds up that digital clutter over time. Clearing your cache gives the browser a new start, which can speed up your web surfing, even on  iOS 17  or the upcoming iOS 18 . (If you're trying to get your phone to run faster, try  managing your iPhone's storage .)

Website cookies are similar, except they store information about user data, rather than data on the website itself. Clearing your cookies gives you a chance to reset those preferences, which could improve your browsing experience. Note that clearing your cache and cookies will log you out of sites, which means you'll have to log into them again and reset any preferences. The upfront investment of that time can lead to a smoother experience down the road, and it can be a useful fix if you've recently changed settings that aren't being applied properly.

Here are step-by-step guides on how to clear your cache on your iPhone based on  the browser you use .

How to clear your iPhone cache in Firefox

1 . Click the hamburger menu in the bottom right corner to open up options.

What happens when you clear the cache?

Clearing your cache removes the website data your phone stored locally to prevent having to download that data upon each new visit. The data in your cache builds over time and can end up slowing things down if it becomes too bulky or out of date. (My phone had about 150MB of data stored in Chrome when I checked.) Clearing that data gives sites a fresh start, which may fix some loading errors and speed up your browser. Clearing your cache also signs you out of pages, so be prepared to sign in to everything again.

How often do I need to clear my cache?

Most people only need to clear their caches once every month or two. That's generally the point when your browser will build up a cache large enough to start slowing things down. If you frequent a large number of sites, you should err on the side of clearing your cache more often.

Safari tabs reappearing after closing and then disappearing when left open

The tabs in safari on my iPhone initially were reappearing after I had closed them. This went on for a few weeks. It was annoying, but I just kept closing them until they finally didn’t come back again. But then yesterday, my tabs began disappearing when I had left them open. I leave them open so I can go back and reference them. It’s only a few tabs, but it feels like my phone is gaslighting me.

Amberzepeda,

Thank you for those details. Let's clear your website data to see if the issue persists.

Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance. If you still need help, follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings > Safari.
  • Tap Clear History and Website data.
  • Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

More information can be found here: If Safari displays a blank page or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Can you also provide a few more details? What is your exact iOS version? Also, do you use Safari on any other devices?

  • Safari tabs disappear on iPad Since the last update (iOS 13.3.1), I’ve noticed that if I press too hard on a link in an email, it opens that link in Safari but closes all other open tabs. I can’t just go into recent searches to find the tabs again since most of the tabs have been open for some time, and the search has too many other tabs that I opened and then closed myself. These were tabs that I wanted to follow up on, and now they’re all gone! This happens to me at least every other week or so, so it is very frustrating. Any suggestions? 446 2

Welcome Amberzepeda,

We understand that you're having an issue with tabs in Safari. To clarify, are you using iCloud Tabs to sync tabs across your devices? This can be found in Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

iCloud keeps the tabs you have open in Safari up to date on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. That means you can go from one device to the next and pick up browsing wherever you left off.

Click here for details: Set up and use iCloud Tabs

If that feature is not enabled, we suggest completing the following steps:

• Restart your iPhone

• Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch

• Make sure you're running the latest software version. (Be sure your device is backed up prior to completing this step): Update iOS on iPhone

I am not syncing, I am up to date, and I have restarted my phone to no effect.

Hey amberzepeda,

We hate to hear about the disappeared tabs and losing the recipes. Our apologies for that. Are you able to test out the issue now and is it resolved?

The 11 Best iPhone Widgets I Can't Live Without

Does your child use an iphone make sure you enable this messaging safety feature, i tried out apple fitness+ for a week so you don't have to, quick links, safari handles tabs efficiently, so leave them alone, but close them if it makes you happy, key takeaways.

Unlike on a desktop browser, having tabs open in the background on Safari won't slow down your iPhone. With some very limited exceptions, the tabs are "suspended" and won't use any resources until you interact with them.

If you're worried that your enormous pile of unclosed tabs in Safari for iPhone is slowing down your phone, decreasing your battery life, or wasting your storage, this is the article for you.

Listen, we understand. It's completely natural to assume that having a bunch of tabs open in Safari on your iPhone must have some sort of impact. It just feels like it should, right?

Related: How Many Tabs Can You Have Open on the iPhone?

How could keeping hundreds, if not thousands, of tabs open on your iPhone not hurt performance, battery life, or both? And surely there must be a massive storage penalty for caching all of those pages?

But that's applying an old-school desktop-oriented model of web browser use and impact to a mobile device that was designed to function in a different and more efficient way.

Despite all the claims you'll find on the web and in viral videos that you should routinely close out all your tabs to improve performance, it just doesn't matter.

When you are not actively looking at a page in Safari, the page is in a suspended state. It's, more or less, a glorified bookmark that happens to have a fancy thumbnail for your viewing convenience. The number of tabs you have in Safari doesn't decrease your battery life or make your phone run slower. If your phone needs resources, it will simply take care of all the resource management in the background without you ever intervening.

It's so efficient at this, in fact, that despite our best efforts through extensive testing to even replicate the tiniest performance hit to say, "Look! Under this extreme circumstance, you can finally see the impact of excessive browser tabs on the iPhone!" we came up empty-handed.

We loaded thousands of tabs. We tried to force web pages to stay active in the background and drain the battery. We logged into web-based resources we controlled and watched for prolonged activity indicating the browser tab in question was doing something, anything, at all.

The end result? Overwhelming evidence that the Safari experience on the iPhone is optimized to have as little impact on the user's overall phone experience as possible.

Related: Stop Closing Apps on Your iPhone

Nothing we did decreased performance. Running music off a web page loaded in the background (which is one of the only ways a site will even stay active when you aren't directly interacting with it) had no additional impact on battery life that you wouldn't get from playing any music at all continuously on your iPhone.

Just like closing apps on your iPhone has no impact on performance (and actually hurts performance and battery life), spending a lot of time fussing with your Safari tabs does nothing to make your phone faster or your battery last longer. And there's no storage performance hit either, because as soon as your phone needs to space taken up by any web page caches, it'll simply take the space and use it.

So when should you close tabs?  Not to speed up your phone because, alas, that's just a placebo effect that makes you feel better.

Instead, close tabs when it helps your mental health and makes you feel happy. Whether you like starting each week with a clean slate, or you have tabs open related to a work project you'd rather not think about anymore, or for any number of reasons that you just don't want the tabs cluttering up your phone, feel free to dump them all.

Related: How to Automatically Close Safari Tabs on iPhone and iPad

In fact, you can even set up your phone to automatically close tabs for you on a schedule . Again, it'll have zero impact on performance, but who doesn't love a little automation? Setting up the tab closing schedule is like having a little Roomba for your digital detritus.

Don't care and don't want to bother closing them? That's fine too. I never do. You can open up Safari on my phone at any time and, save for those rare moments I've closed tabs for the purpose of writing articles here at How-To Geek, it's perpetually pegged at the maximum number of tabs.

And hey, while we're talking tabs, do check out all these tips and tricks for wrangling your pile of Safari tabs to keep them as organized (or not) as you prefer.

[Voice access] You can now dictate the characters that you spell at a faster speed. You also have more editing options for the commands that select, delete, and move within text.

[File Explorer]

When you press Windows logo key + E, a screen reader might say a pane has focus, or the focus might not be set at all.

When you press Ctrl + F, sometimes the search does not start.

Keyboard focus sometimes might get lost when you press Shift + Tab.

Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items that are in a breadcrumb of the Open or Save dialog.

Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items in the column header.

[Widgets Board] We are rolling out an update to the Widgets Board to improve security and the APIs for creating widgets and feeds for users in EEA regions. As part of this update, the Microsoft Start Experiences app will power the Microsoft Start widget and feed experiences. Also, as part of this update, some existing widgets will be removed and others will be modified, temporarily affecting their functionality. [Input Method Editor (IME)] When a combo box has input focus, a memory leak might occur when you close that window.

[Country and Operator Settings Asset] This update brings COSA profiles up to date for certain mobile operators.

[Bluetooth] External devices lose their connection when you deploy certain Bluetooth policies.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5041586) - 22621.4099 and 22631.4099

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

How to get this update.

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates  and  Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions .

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages .

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer ( wusa.exe ) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.
