Keep Safari history longer than a month?

Hello, I just realized that my safari history on my iPhone 13, or any IOS for that matter, is only stored for up to a month.

I know for a fact that safari history on Mac deletes after a year unless you go to settings, and disable this by selecting delete history manually.

I wish there was a way to do this on IOS. Is there a way to prevent my browsing history on IOS to be deleted after a month?

this feature is lacking, I’ve searched for it everywhere.

How to clear recent history in safari on iphone and ipad.

Want to erase some of your iPhone's browsing history?

Quick Links

How to erase single entries in safari's history list.

Normally, Safari on iPhone and iPad keeps track of which sites you visit in a special History list. While it's possible to completely wipe your history in Settings , you can also erase only more recent history if you'd like. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the "Bookmarks" button (which looks like an open book). On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-left corner of the screen beside the address bar. On an iPhone, it's at the bottom of the screen.

In the pop-up that appears (on the left side of the screen on iPad and over the whole screen on iPhone), tap the History tab (which looks like a clock face), and then tap the "Clear" button.

(Don't worry. It won't clear anything yet.)

After you tap "Clear," another pop-up will give you yet another choice. You can select "All time," "Today and yesterday," "Today," or "The last hour."

Choosing one of these options will remove your browsing history, cookies, and other browsing data from the point you select until now. For example, if you click "Today," all the browsing history from sites you visited today will disappear, but everything earlier than that will remain on the list.

Tap the option you'd prefer (or you can tap outside the pop-up box to cancel).

If you made a selection from the pop-up list, your browsing history will be cleared accordingly. It's all very quick and handy.

Oh, and one more thing before you go: In Safari's History list, you can also delete individual entries by swiping to the left on them with your finger. When a red "Delete" button appears on the right, tap it.

Using this method, only the single entry you just swiped will be zapped. This can be a nice, laser-focused way of erasing certain history items without having to clear everything at once. Happy browsing!

How to clear browsing history on Safari on iPhone or Mac

You can clear your Safari browsing history on both iOS and Mac

As tracking goes, Safari keeping your browsing history is less about privacy-busting security and more about just being useful. It's your history that means Safari remembers where to go to when you choose forward and back within a site, for instance.

It's also how Safari is able to offer you a list of sites that you regularly go to, on account of how handy it is to be able to back to them with a click. History also does keep things you may not expect, though, such as a list of items you've downloaded.

If you don't want that, though, or you're just fed up of Safari going to site addresses you haven't looked at in years, you can wipe the whole browsing history.

On a Mac, you can also wipe, for instance, just the last hour's browsing history. So if you share Safari and it's someone's special birthday coming up, you can avoid them inadvertently finding out you plan to surprise them with dance lessons.

Go to History, Clear History, and then choose how far back you want your browsing cleared

How to clear search history on Safari on Mac

  • In Safari, choose the History menu
  • Select Clear History from the very bottom of the menu
  • In the dialog box that appears, choose from clearing the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history
  • Click on Clear History

Alternatively, within Safari you can press Command-Y and the current page will be replaced by a history list. There's a Clear History... button toward the top right.

Clicking on that gives you exactly the same dialog about choosing how far back you want to clear your browsing history. But this page does also give you one extra option — the ability to delete one specific item.

How to clear one item from Safari search history on Mac

  • In Safari, press Command-Y
  • From the long list, click once on a history item to select it
  • Right-click to bring up a menu, then choose Delete

Alternatively, if you select one, two, or more items in the history list, you can then press the Delete key to remove them all.

You can remove your takeaway habits from Safari, we're not judging you.

That kind of precision removal is only possible on your Mac, not on iOS . However, whether it's precision or wholesale clearing of your history, though, there is a way to replicate it on iOS.

If you have set iCloud to share your Safari history, then just doing this on your Mac also removes the history from your iPhone, and iPad.

Otherwise, you're stuck with going to your iOS device. And then with clearing the entire history.

How to clear search history on iPhone

  • Go to Settings on your iOS device
  • Tap on Safari
  • Scroll down to Clear History and Website Data
  • Tap that, then tap Clear History and Data to confirm

One important thing to note is that you can't selectively remove, say, today's browsing history on the iPhone or iPad . It's all or nothing, with iOS.

Clearing your Safari history is all or nothing on iOS

What you leave behind

Clearing your history like this does remove the list of sites and pages you've visited. It does mean you can't go back to that site you read last Tuesday, not without remembering what it was and going there yourself.

What it doesn't remove, though, is the information that gets used by something like AutoFill. If you have your address, for instance, and you're used to online forms being filled out with it, you've still got that feature.

You've also still got anything you downloaded. It's purely that Safari won't keep the list of downloads.

How to Clear Safari History, Cache, and Cookies on your iPhone

Safari App Icon on iPad

Toggle Dark Mode

Safari stores your browsing history as well as cached files and cookies from every website you visit. Clearing Safari history, cookies, and cached data on your iPhone can be beneficial for various reasons, including performance improvement, privacy, troubleshooting, and general maintenance.

Sometimes, you also may simply want a fresh start and prefer to clear your history regularly to minimize your digital footprint.

Clearing your history ensures others can’t see which websites you’ve visited or what information you’ve searched for. This is mostly applicable if you share your iPhone with others or search for sensitive information.

Over time, cached files and cookies from sites you visit can accumulate and take up a significant amount of storage space on your iPhone. Clearing them will free up storage capacity. Excessive data accumulation, including history, cookies, and cache, can slow down Safari’s performance. Clearing this data could speed up your browsing experience.

Also, if a website isn’t loading properly, clearing your browsing history, cache, and cookies will force Safari to download fresh data and could help resolve the issue.

How to Clear Safari History

safari 1

To clear your Safari history and website data such as cookies and caches, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down to Safari and tap it.
  • Find Clear History and Website Data and tap it.
  • On the next screen, you’ll have the option to clear history from the Last Hour , Today , Today and Yesterday , or All history. Select whichever one you prefer.

How to Clear Safari Cache and Cookies

safari 2

The steps above will clear all of your browsing history, plus cookies, cache, and other browsing data (this is what “website data” refers to). However, you can preserve the history of the sites you’ve visited while clearing out only your cookies and other stored browsing data such as caches and stored preferences for individual websites.

Here’s how to clear your Safari cache and cookies, but keep your history:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll all the way down to Advanced and tap it.
  • Tap Website Data . Depending on how much data is stored, this screen might take a few seconds to load.
  • To flush the data for an individual site, locate it in the list and swipe right-to-left to delete it. You can also select Show All Sites to expand the list.
  • To delete all cookies and caches, select Remove All Website Data at the bottom of your screen and then tap Remove Now to confirm.

Clearing Safari’s history and website data is a straightforward process that can protect privacy, improve performance, and help manage valuable storage space effectively. Whether or not you’ve been thinking about it, give it a try to see if you notice a difference.

How to View Safari History on iPhone

The Safari Web browser on your iPhone keeps a record of the websites you visit.

This can be a useful tool, especially if you’ve already read something and want to go back to it.

  • To examine your history, tap the clock symbol.

Our explanation continues below with further information on seeing your iPhone’s Safari history, as well as screenshots of these procedures.

When you use your computer or smartphone’s Web browser without using a private browsing session, the browser saves your browsing history.

When iPhone users are concerned about their phone’s browsing history, they frequently want to delete it. That history, though, can be valuable.

It can assist you with locating an intriguing article that you read earlier but can’t remember the address for, or it can assist you in determining which store had the greatest pricing on a product that you were looking at from a range of various retailers.

When you use the Safari Web browser on your iPhone, it saves a history of all the pages you visit.

Possessing this history makes it much easier to return to a previously visited page, as you can access that history and simply tap on the page that you want to visit.

Our article below will show you how to quickly discover and use your Safari iPhone history.

The procedures in this post were carried out using an iPhone 11 running iOS 13.6.1. The same methods will work on most other iOS versions and iPhone models.

If you’ve updated to iOS 15, your address bar may now be at the bottom of the screen. If this is the case, your screen may differ from the examples in the guide below. Yet, the buttons for accessing the history remain in the same locations.

Step 1: Launch the Safari browser.

open Safari

Step 2: Tap the icon that looks like an open book at the bottom of the screen.

how to view Safari history on iPhone

Now that you know how to discover your Safari history iPhone data, you may utilize it to find information that you previously saw and either wanted to double-check or share with someone else.

You should now be able to see your browsing history. You can navigate to the page by tapping on an item in the list. Individual Web pages in this history can be deleted by swiping to the left and hitting the Delete button.

Your browser’s search history will be mixed in with the pages you’ve visited. This implies that the terms you entered in the search field at the top or bottom of the screen will be visible as well. Depending on your selected search engine, your search phrases will appear beside domains such as “google.com” or “bing.com.”

Continue reading our tutorial below for more information on locating and using history data in your iPhone’s Safari browser.

Further Details about Checking Safari History on iPhone

It is important to note that Safari does not save your history for pages visited while using Private Browsing. Toggling between ordinary and private browsing is as simple as touching the Tabs icon (two overlapping squares) at the bottom of the screen and selecting the Private option.

Safari also does not save browsing history for other iPhone browsers, such as Google Chrome or Firefox. Instead, you’d have to open those browsers to see their history.

Also, deleting the browsing history for Safari will only affect the browsing history for the Safari app. Other browsers’ history menus will remain accessible on your iOS device unless you opt to delete the existing data for those browsers as well.

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data to remove your Safari history. This will also clear your cookies and log you out of any accounts you are presently signed into.

When you remove Safari’s browser history, you won’t be able to view Safari history for any browsing sessions that occurred before the deletion. Safari will only display your Online surfing history when that information has been removed.

If you haven’t erased Safari history previously, your browser history can be quite large. Normally, the device’s full history will be available for 30 days.

How to Lookup Safari History on an iPhone

Searching through your iPhone Safari history is another intriguing thing you can do with it.

When you open Safari, press the book symbol at the bottom of the screen, then select the History tab at the top of the screen, you’ll notice a “Search History” area.

When you tap inside that field and type a search query, you’ll see a list of pages from your history that contain those search terms.

This is especially useful if you recall a single word or term but don’t remember where you saw it or the name of the website where you saw it.

If you have another browser installed on your iPhone, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, those browsers will also retain history, which you may search through in the same way.

iPhone 101: How to view your Safari browsing history on your iPhone or iPad

Like most modern web browsers, Safari for iOS stores your browsing history so you can call up web pages that you previously visited on your iPhone or iPad. The feature is easy to access and works with any open Safari page on your device.

Open Safari for iOS on your iPhone or iPad.

Press and hold the back arrow button on the far left hand side of the bottom tool bar.

Your browser history menu will appear on the screen. From here, you can tap on a link to open it.

If you use iOS 7 and have multiple windows/tabs open, you can view each window's browser history by tapping the "multiple pages" icon in the bottom right of the tool bar and then selecting the target page to open it. When it is open, you can press and hold the back bottom to view the history of that particular session.

This only works for open tabs that originate on your device. If you use iCloud, you may be able to see pages that are open on another iOS device or Mac. Opening an iPad window from your iPhone, for example, does not allow you to view the history of that iPad browsing session.

Apple Promises to Fix Long-Ignored Parental Control Bug After Media Spotlight

Apple will finally address a Safari restriction workaround that has been around for years after the bug was highlighted by The Wall Street Journal 's Joanna Stern. Kids who are restricted from viewing certain websites with the Screen Time feature are able to paste a string of characters in the address bar in Safari in order to get around parental controls.

screen time restrictions

In a statement to Stern, Apple said that it is aware of an "issue with an underlying web technology protocol for developers, which allows a user to bypass web content restrictions." A fix is planned for "the next software update."

Security researchers that spoke to Stern said the bug was first reported to Apple in March of 2021, after it was found that inputting a string of characters would get around website restrictions implemented by parents and web blacklists on company devices. The hack worked to bypass restrictions on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple told the researchers that it was not a security issue, and instead directed them to submit a report using the Feedback tool. After the report was submitted, there was no word back from Apple. Attempting to resubmit the bug to Apple was met with no response.

Apple ignored the issue for three years until Stern was contacted and publicized the problem. It appears that the workaround was not well-known or widely exploited, as the two security researchers that discovered it never shared it.

In addition to promising a fix, Apple said that it is committed to improving the process that's used to receive and escalate bug reports.

Stern's report highlights several other bugs with Screen Time, including issues with app limits, Screen Time usage charts, notifications for more time, and Ask to Buy. Apple improved Screen Time with iOS 17.5, implementing fixes for app and device usage tracking, app limits, and time requests, but the company says there will be additional updates in upcoming software releases.

Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 has a pointed AI focus, and may well be one of the most drastic software upgrades in the iPhone’s history.

Apple is planning to announce new AI features coming to iOS 18 for the iPhone at WWDC 2024 on June 1...

In the AI race between Microsoft, Google, and Apple, the house that Steve Jobs built clearly has the late start. While Microsoft and Google have rolled out AI features at a dizzying rate , Apple has taken its time, a test of patience and refusal to trust blindly in beta AI products.

According to Bloomberg , Apple will soon introduce a number of AI-themed upgrades to the iPhone as part of its upcoming iOS 18 software update. There’s still a few weeks to go before CEO Tim Cook’s keynote speech at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, where he’s expected to officially announce Apple’s AI strategy. But for now, here’s a batch of potential AI-based upgrades that might be coming to iPhones by the end of the year.

1. AI-generated emojis

TOPSHOT - A person holds an iPhone showing emojis in Hong Kong, on October 30, 2019. - Apple has put...

Let’s start with the standout. While Apple is mostly playing catch-up with Microsoft’s new Copilot AI capabilities , an idea that is so far uniquely Apple’s is its AI emoji feature. Supposedly, iOS 18 will introduce users to a new way of texting, with custom emojis — beyond Apple’s current catalog — on constant standby. That means an emoji will be generated based on what you text, no matter what you type in.

2. Smart Summaries

This one was leaked a little while back, so by now you might already know that a big part of iOS 18 will be its smart summaries. These are due to be baked into just about every major part of the software experience: Emails, webpages, and messages will be condensed into bite-sized pieces of information, saving you a lot of reading and scrolling time.

3. A Long-Due Safari Upgrade

Popular apps are seen on an iPhone on 10 May, 2017. Recenlty Apple has announced it has been working...

At this rate, Safari is swiftly reaching Internet Explorer levels of obsolescence. It’s been due for a good renovation for some time now. Well, here it comes. Potentially confirming earlier leaks, Safari will be upgraded with an AI-backed web search, which should mean better results and quick summaries.

4. Photo Retouching

This feature won’t exactly rock the boat, but it should help Apple catch up to Samsung Galaxy’s impressive generative AI editing suite . Among Apple’s new AI photo retouching tools could be the ability to erase or shift objects in the frame, and to enhance colors.

5. A More Helpful and Realistic Siri

BERLIN, GERMANY - JANUARY 21: In this photo illustration the logo of the speech recognition software...

Following up on previous reports, Siri is about to get quite a bit more realistic, with a less robotic-sounding voice and better responses overall. Siri has seen relatively little improvement in its 13 years of existence, so this may be one of the most drastic shifts to the virtual assistant. Expect a larger range of expertise and assistance, too, including the ability to summarize emails and messages. Siri’s IQ is set to increase by quite a wide margin.

6. Voice Memo Transcription

Not exactly a new idea here either, but one that will be very welcome on iOS all the same. Google’s Pixel phones have already made good use of AI to help turn voice memos into text, now Apple is working to follow suit. This will probably enhance the Voice Memos experience, allowing users to automatically transcribe speech, making the lives of students and journalists a little easier.

7. Automatic Replies

Apple's Messages icon displayed on a phone screen is seen in this illustration photo taken in Krakow...

If you find yourself stuck on something to say, then Apple’s smart AI responses should soon have your back. Handing over your texting responsibilities to an AI could potentially get a little hairy, so Apple will provide suggestions that can be reviewed and edited, rather than simply sending texts to your contact list on the fly.

8. Local On-Device AI > The Cloud

While a substantial amount of AI tech has been powered in the cloud, Apple will soon look to rely on its own large language models so that its upcoming generative AI features can run locally and in the background. This should allow for quicker response times and greater privacy and safety, but it may prove problematic for more robust AI operations that require more processing power.

iOS 18 — all the new AI features coming to your iPhone

You should save a whole lot of time with AI

ios 18

When it comes to AI, Apple needs to play catch up, especially if the company intends on impressing people with new features coming to its iPhone 16 later this fall. As a result, all the talk heading into next week’s WWDC 2024 event concerns iOS 18 AI features, which will be critical in reigniting Apple’s mobile software to keep pace with its rivals.

So far, the rumors indicate that artificial intelligence will most certainly be a key talking point for Apple. This comes after the industry saw a surge in AI-powered features on board phones like the Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24 . Apple can’t afford to sit back any longer, especially since many of these AI features in phones have proven to be helpful and practical to use.

While Google showed off even more impressive AI tools and features during Google I/O 2024 last month, Apple can’t afford to let Android 15 win out the AI wars against iOS 18. We’ll break down all the biggest iOS 18 AI features that are expected to accompany the latest update to the iPhone’s software.

Smarter Siri actions

Siri

Not surprisingly, a lot of the rumors about iOS 18 pertain to Apple’s voice assistant. Siri ’s expected to lean into large language models (LLM) to make it sound more natural with responses. More importantly, Siri is expected to handle more complex tasks as well.

Many of those tasks are believed to center around productivity in iOS 18, like the ability to summarize long emails and messages , open specific documents for you, and even move a note from one folder to another. Right now, those actions are mostly manual processes that require users to open up specific apps to carry things out, but Siri is expected to streamline the process with iOS 18 by just doing them for you through voice commands. Just imagine the amount of time you’ll save.

AI-generated emojis

iOS 17.4 emoji's

Adding a bit of playful charm to messages, iOS 18 is tipped to offer AI-generated emojis that can be created with the help of generative AI. Even though there’s a healthy catalog of emoji to choose from with the iPhone keyboard, there are still times when you can’t find an emoji that best represents your feelings.

These AI-generated emojis are allegedly going to be created by using a text-based prompt where users describe the emoji they want to create. While this isn’t technically new — many third party apps offer a feature similar to this through paid subscriptions — iOS 18 would offer this capability natively.

Smart replies

Although it remains to be seen if Apple’s ripping off Samsung and Google here, messaging in iOS 18 could introduce contextual quick reply options . Obviously, AI would analyze the conversation in message to provide users with relevant responses to choose from, but this again highlights the time-saving qualities of having AI in phones.

While convenient, we’re curious to see how iOS 18 generates these smart replies — when testing Samsung’s version, Galaxy AI Chat Assist , it was painfully obvious that someone else wrote the response .

Summarizing in mobile Safari

Sometimes you just need a tl;dr summarization when it comes to those endless articles on a web page. iOS 18 is planning to offer such a function by tapping AI to summarize content in mobile Safari. That way, you’ll spend less time reading while being presented with the most important points about the article.

This AI-assisted summarizing feature may sound familiar already because the Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8 do it with their respective summarizing features .

Smarter notification recaps

a list of notifications on an iphone screen

At one point or another, you’ve probably been inundated by a slew of notifications on your iPhone that you’ve yet to look over, but iOS 18 might help out in a big way with smarter recaps.

Rather than being overwhelmed by all of those notifications just chilling in the Notification Center on your iPhone, this AI-assisted feature would highlight only the most important notifications that deserve your attention. With this feature, users can feel more confident and relaxed that they didn’t overlook an important notification.

AI photo editing

How to turn off Live Photos in iPhone Photos app

Ask anyone who’s used the Pixel 8 Pro or Galaxy S24 Ultra , and they’ll probably tell you that the most impressive AI features center around photo editing. Apple’s undoubtedly going to be investing heavily in the AI photo editing features of iOS 18, since it appears set to be gaining a similar feature to Google’s Magic Editor .

This would allow anyone to quickly and easily edit their snapshots through the Photos app on iPhone. In addition to being able to remove unwanted objects in photographs, generative AI would aid in the process to fill in any gaps. It’s reportedly being called Clean Up, while another feature called Generative Playground would allow iPhone users to create custom images through an app extension.

Auto generated playlists in Apple Music

Apple Music logo in white on a red background

Finding new music to listen to can be exhausting all on its own, which is exactly where AI could lend a hand by making it easier to find music that’s tailored to your tastes. In iOS 18, Apple Music is tipped to gain auto generated playlists. Why spend the time fetching new tracks to listen to when you can have AI do it all for you? Naturally, this feature would aggregate these playlists according to your preference.

Transcribing voice memos

An iPhone with a voice memo

And finally, another useful implementation of AI in iOS 18 would be helping out to transcribe voice memos recorded by an iPhone. As we’ve seen in other phones that use AI for voice recordings, this could bring much-needed features like the ability to distinguish multiple voices, summarize the entire recording, and even intelligently format the summarization complete with bold headings and bullet points.

iOS 18: Everything We Know So Far About Apple's New iPhone Software

A pple's  Worldwide Developers Conference  is scheduled to kick off in one week, on June 10. The company is expected to unveil the next version of its  iPhone software, iOS 18 .

The new version of iOS could bring the "biggest" software update in the iPhone's history, according to a January edition of Mark Gurman's  Power On newsletter . In November, Gurman wrote that iOS 18 could bring "relatively groundbreaking" updates to the iPhone complete with "major new features and designs."

Phone makers are increasingly bringing  generative AI  features to their flagship smartphones, in a bid to take advantage of the hype cycle surrounding the emerging technology. Last fall, Google debuted its flagship Pixel 8 lineup with souped-up AI tricks, and in January, Samsung launched the  Galaxy S24 series  complete with  Galaxy AI . Apple is expected go in the same direction with the expected iPhone 16 and iOS 18. CEO Tim Cook said he expects Apple have to an edge in AI in a May earnings call, even though the company is widely seen as being behind in the AI race.

"We've got some things that we are incredibly excited about that we'll be talking about later this year," Cook said an  earnings call  in February in response to a question about generative AI.

To be clear, Apple already has AI tools on its iPhones  like its  photo duplication detection  feature for instance, but we've yet to see how generative AI will factor into the iPhone and iOS in a major way. With  iOS 17 , Apple included a slew of AI-powered features like the ability to  clone your own voice  on the iPhone (which is a form of gen AI) and an updated keyboard with better autocorrect. But the company stopped short of unveiling generative AI products along the lines of Google's Gemini or OpenAI's Chat GPT. Still, the rumor mill points to meaningful changes in iOS 18. Here are the most credible ones.

Notes App revamp

Apart from Siri, one of the bigger changes could appear on Apple's popular Notes App, according to reports by  Apple Insider. The Notes app is expected to gain the ability to record and transcribe audio. It could also gain the ability to generate AI-powered summaries. This feature is rumored to change the Voice Memo apps across the iPhone as well as on iPads and MacBooks. It will supposedly work similarly to the company's  Live Voicemail feature , which was introduced last fall in iOS 17.

Smarter Siri

Siri has been around since iOS 5 in 2011, but with iOS 18 Apple's voice-activated assistant could become more useful. Apple's digital helper will be able to manage all features within apps, enabling users to control singular functions on various apps with their voice, according to a Bloomberg report  from late May. This feature is not expected to be released until 2025, the report says, when it will be part of a subsequent update to iOS 18.

In the nearer term, people can expect generative AI technology to "improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences," according to Gurman.

A September report from the Information  said Apple plans to use large language models , a crucial part of generative AI, to make Siri smarter. An example detailed in that article explained how Siri can respond to simple voice commands for more complex tasks, such as turning a set of photos into a GIF and then sending them to one of your contacts. If that example is accurate, this represents a significant step forward in the capabilities of Siri. A more recent Bloomberg report seems to back this up, saying Siri would gain the ability to perform the multistep task of summarizing a recorded meeting and then texting it to a colleague in a single request.

Calendar app integrates with Reminders app?

With iOS 18, the iPhone's Calendar app will apparently include integration with the Reminders app. According to a May  AppleInsider report , the updated version of Calendar should allow you to schedule and organize reminders directly from it, without needing to launch the Reminders app. The report says you'll be able to view reminders within the Day, Week, and Month calendar views.

Improved texting with Android

Apple has said it will bring support for  RCS , the cross-platform messaging standard, to the iPhone. According to a November report by 9to5Mac , an Apple spokesperson said it'll be coming to the iPhone "later next year" and will work alongside iMessage.

RCS support should improve the current messaging experience between iPhone and Android users by bringing iMessage-like features. Those upgrades include sending high-quality photos and videos to contacts, read receipt, typing indicators and, most importantly, end-to-end encryption, something SMS messaging lacks. In other words, if you have an Android phone and are texting someone with an iPhone, you'll be able to text each other over RCS instead of SMS. However, it's important to remember that iMessage will remain exclusive to the iPhone and other Apple devices. RCS will not bring iMessage to Android phones.

As mentioned earlier, details are currently sparse on Apple's plans and we don't yet know which iPhones will be compatible with iOS 18. We'll be updating this article as and when we get more details, so make sure to check back. Until then, you can get up to speed with iOS 17 .

On-device AI

A recent rumor points to how Apple's generative AI features could operate. According to Gurman, Apple's own LLM is set to anchor the generative AI features on the upcoming iPhone. The primary benefits of on-device AI include better privacy and faster response times, since the data doesn't have to be transmitted to the cloud. But this approach may also make Apple's AI tools less suited to certain scenarios that require a depth of knowledge, such as how some chatbots are less useful than others because they don't have access to the open internet. But the iPhone-maker could compensate for these limitations by licensing technology from Google  and other AI service providers.

In iOS 15 and later, the ability to translate a web page's language to your native language is now a built-in part of Safari. As such, you no longer need a third-party app to translate. Here's how to use built-in language translation in Safari in iOS 14, iOS 15, and later.

  • Tap the action button on the left side of the address bar while visiting a site that you need to translate. The button looks like two A's next to each other.
  • Tap Translate to [Your Device Language] .

  • Tap Enable Translation if prompted.

  • Tap the translate button in the Safari address bar. It takes the place of the standard action button on the left side of the address bar.
  • Tap View Original .

The page will revert to its original language.

If you're running a version of iOS 13 or earlier on your device, then a third-party app with a translation extension is what you'll want to use. Microsoft's Translator extension is an excellent tool for the task, as it translates the web page in place when activated.
