Ålesund  for the little ones

Ålesund you can visit the town mountain and viewpoint Aksla

Visit Ålesund with children and take in a birds eye view.

  • In Ålesund you can visit the town mountain and viewpoint Aksla. From here you can see Archipelago and all the sweet shop coloured art nouveau houses. It’s quite tiring with steep slopes and 418 steps but well with the view!
  • If you are not up to the steps, catch the Ålesund city train to the top of the mount Aksla for gorgeous views over the city.
  • Feed the seals at Atlanterhavsparken – Ålesund one of Europe’s largest seawater aquariums.  See penguin shows and get up close to Fjord fish you can not see anywhere else in the world.
  • Hakallegarden is an alpaca animal park which is great for children.

Visiting Geiranger  with teens

Building Cairns at Mount Dalsnibba

Geiranger Fjord was stunning! We spent time under waterfalls, above the clouds and climbing mountains. We used  Geirangerfjord  for our tours here.

  • Take a boat trip along the Fjords to see the Seven sisters waterfalls.
  • Grab a hop on hop off bus
  • Walk to he waterfall directly in the centre of Geiranger, no tour needed.
  • Take a bus up to Mount Daksnibba.  Right up your teens street if they like heights!  Don’t worry it is safer than it looks (no steep drop after) the views from Dalsnibba mountain overlooking Geiranger are stunning and the rock formations are so interesting. Don’t forget to pile a Cairn! (Make a rock pile).

Touring with children in Skjolden

A bike ride in Skjolden

Skjolden is stunning and really easy to explore on your own. The waterfalls are amazing here and there are shops to visit if you do not want to walk far.

  • Hire a Bike for your own tour of the pretty town
  • Explore the many waterfalls with a short walk or hike.
  • Skim pebbles across the water.
  • Book a Llama experience which is just a short walk from the dock.

What to do with kids in Bergen

Troll at the top of Floyen

Bergen has lots to offer including stunning views, activities and plenty of shops.

  • Ride the Fløbanen to Floyen – A funicular railway that connects the town of Bergen with Fløyen in the mountains with spectacular views
  • Search for trolls on top of Floyen right by the children’s play park.
  • Ride the zip line in Floyen.
  • Hire a free canoe on the Lake Skomakerdiket.

Oslo for the day with kids

Waterfall on the Eagle bend road

  • Visit the Fram Museum  dedicated to Norway’s history of arctic and antarctic exploration.
  • The Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and largest museum of natural history.  It also houses Oslo’s stuffed Arctic wildlife!
  • Viking Ship Museum  which houses archaeological finds from burial sites and pieces dating back to the viking period.
  • Explore Frogner Park and the Vigeland Statues. With more than 200 statues it really is a sight to behold. With statues in bronze, cast iron and granite it is one of Norway’s top tourist attractions and free to enter.

Cruising the Norwegian Fjords with kids tips

Champagne on the balcony along the fjords

  • Be sure to check out the local tourist board in each port. From here you can book boat trips, bus tours or hire bikes.
  •  Ports get very busy when a cruise ship is in so either book prior to your visit or be sure to be first off the ship.
  • There are rural farms throughout Norway, many of which are open to the public so you can visit. Take a look Norway’s website for a full list.
  • One of the great bits about Norway is searching for the trolls!  The kids will love finding them and they are in every town.
  • Pack clothes for all weathers, layers, raincoats and a down coat for the cold. You may even need sun screen for your face.
  • Set the alarm early! The views as you approach the Fjords in the morning are stunning and you may save yourself a tour.
  • Don’t forget your camera!
  • Try and book a balcony room for the best views. Sitting on the balcony in your own peace and quiet is simply beautiful.
  • The back of the cruise ships sometimes have larger balcony’s that look over the balcony below. From rear of the ship you will see right across the breadth of the Fjords.
  • Check out the street art in some of the bigger cities, it really is amazing.

The Fabulous Fjord: Norwegian Fjord Cruise with Kids

A cruise is a brilliant way of seeing the famous Norwegian fjords. As you gaze up the steep mountains surrounding you, you can experience them in their full splendour. Here’s what you need to know to make most of your next Norwegian fjord cruise with kids.

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

Twelve years ago, when the two of us tried to visit all of Scandinavia in two weeks, we just drove through the fjords, briefly stopping to take in the magnificent views. Still, I was sure we had gotten a good sense of it. After the fjord cruise, I realized that it was just good enough. To fully appreciate this nature’s creation, you have to get on the water.

Norwegian Fjord Cruise with kids is great fun

I didn’t know back then that there’s an array of different cruises to choose from. So, even if you are pressed for time, you can still find an option that will help you create memories of Norway to last you a lifetime.

We chose a three-hour-long tour through the 27-kilometre long Osterfjord with Rodne Fjord Cruise . If travelling with kids, that’s just the right amount of time to be on the boat, and nobody gets bored.

Our kids loved being able to move around from the sundeck to the seats inside when it got too windy at the top. Be aware that the boat is fast and you might want to find shelter inside, where there’s also a kiosk offering refreshments.

Rodne Fjord Cruise from Bergen to Mostraumen

This is a fun cruise with many amazing views, little lone Norwegian cabins, small villages, stunning nature straight out of a fairytale. It sails straight up to the waterfall, close enough to let you feel the spray of the water.

The great perk of the cruise is also the views of the Bergen Harbour. My advice is to get ready to take great photos from the very get-go.

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

How much does the Mostraumen cruise cost?

A ticket for the family of two adults and up to 4 kids is 1700 NOK or around 155 euros.

When should you go?

The cruise operates all year long, for the exact schedule check their official website . We went at ten in the morning, and it was a great time. We were extremely lucky to have had sunshine throughout the duration of the cruise. The weather started to change once we were leaving Bergen in the late afternoon.

The great thing about this cruise was that after we had finished, we still had time to explore the city. Once we got back to our cottage, we felt like we’d accomplished so much.

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

Is it suitable for kids?

Absolutely. Our kids were thrilled. While the tour is accompanied by an audio guide telling you the most important facts, we used this opportunity to talk to our kids about fjords: what they are, how they are formed, etc. I believe that being able to see it all first-hand beats any geography lesson and they’ll remember fjords for the rest of their lives.

It’s worth mentioning that the cruise is also accessible for pushchairs.

What should you wear on a fjord cruise?

Like I’ve said, we were lucky with the weather, but once the boat started, we still had to put on our rain jackets. I recommend sunglasses as well. If you have a hat, be extra careful with it.

I found that in Norway in general layered clothing works best, as you never know how it will all turn out and I offer the same advice for the cruise.

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

Where to park?

The cruise starts from the Bergen harbour, so you’ll have to find parking in Bergen. Our favourite parking place in the city was ByGaragen – the biggest indoor garage in Bergen . From there it’s a short, about 10-minute walk to the harbour.

Explore Bergen … our tips to follow. Until then read all about our adventure on one of the most beautiful train rides in the world .

Tips and Advice For Successful Boating

Cruising in The Norwegian Fjords With Children

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

The Norwegian fjords offer multiple breathtaking views of what Norway has to offer and embarking on a cruise is one of the best ways to enjoy your trip.

However, children have a habit of being restless or easily distracted, which is why finding the right way to cruise is essential if you want to enjoy your time together in this spectacular region.

Research is an important part of cruising in the Norwegian fjords with children. It is essential to find a cruise line and ship that is family-friendly and that can offer activities for the age group your children fall into. On the other hand, your own preparation is just as important, as a prepared parent will be a happy parent on a cruise.  Unexpected surprises aren’t always a good thing!

Which Cruise Lines Operate in the Norwegian Fjords and What They Offer

Depending on their age, your children will have differing needs. Small children might well be easily entertained, but at the same time, you still need to find more than one source of entertainment for them. Teenagers, on the other hand, are often more difficult to impress, but can enjoy a lot of things that smaller children certainly can’t.

Traveling with Older Children

For teens a cruise must be entertaining, with various shore stops that can provide cultural immersion. Here are some Norwegian Fjord cruises that are highly recommended if you are traveling with teens.

  • Holland America Line

If you have teenagers, then the Holland America Line is a good choice for your cruise. Beginning in either the Netherlands or Fort Lauderdale their cruises take you through to Geirangerfjord , a UNESCO-listed landscape that is surrounded by waterfalls and breath-taking open waters, which you can enjoy from the ground or the balconies of the ship.

Their ships feature various itineraries that are perfect for teenagers. Midnight sun sailing is one of the most popular activities, but you’ll also get to stop for shore trips. One of the stops included by the Holland American Line includes Eidfjord, with an opportunity to go kayaking (for adventurous families), or to enjoy a scenic drive at the apple brandy and cider factory .

If you are looking to educate your child culturally, Cunard offer an amazing Norwegians Fjords cruise for children as young as 12 years old. Their cruises follow the old trading route of the Vikings along the Sognefjord . At 4,300 feet deep, this is the largest fjord in Norway, which is why it is also dubbed the King of Fjords.

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

This cruise also takes you on several shore excursions, including visits to the home of the celebrated composer Edvard Grieg, making it perfect for music lovers. These visits often end with a performance in the spectacular concert hall of Troldsalen. The whole cruise is a cultural immersion presented in a very entertaining way.

  • MSC Cruises

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

MSC Cruises are not usually on the radar when it comes to traveling with children, but their ships are none the less family-friendly, and the activities are usually very entertaining for older children. MSC Sinfonia is a popular option for younger children, who even get discounted rates, but it is also highly entertaining for older children.

The MSC line stops in multiple ports, including Geiranger, Flam, Copenhagen, and Warnemünde. Attractions such as the Flam Railway Museum or the Aurlandsfjord are very close to your docking area. MSC Cruises also have a Kid’s Club, where children can enjoy some playtime onboard the ship. From Lego areas to splash parks, and playgrounds, all of which are highly equipped to keep the children entertained, regardless of their age.

Traveling with Younger Children

Traveling with a younger child, such as a baby, a toddler or a preschooler can be sometimes difficult, as smaller children have seemingly endless amounts of energy! Here are the cruise lines and cruises that small children typically enjoy.

  • P&O Cruises

If you’re in the UK in particular and have a toddler that you want to take on a cruise with you, then you might want to consider booking with P&O Cruises. The newest ships in the P&O fleet can fit as many as 5,200 passengers and are among the most popular choices to visit the fjords. P&O cruises depart from Southampton in the UK, and include seven days of cruising through the fjords.

P&O ships have several playgrounds so your children may be able to play onboard, and the variety of shore stops will also allow them to explore and stretch their legs. The interior design of P&O ships is opulent, but that doesn’t make them a stuffy choice – although you’ll probably find certain evenings are designed to be a bit more full of pomp and ceremony in the main restaurant, with more formal dress codes, but children are still very much welcome.

  • Princess Cruises

Princess cruise lines are great for people with children aged six months and above. The Sky Princess and the Island Princess give you a great view of the fjords, along with various opportunities to walk the trails around the fjords. You’ll get the opportunity to see the hamlet of Skolden which has some of the highest European peaks as a backdrop. Here children will especially love walking through the fjord meadows, where they may even see  llamas enjoying their day!

Princess Cruises also offer more conventional opportunities for sightseeing, such as a visit to Bryggen, a UNESCO heritage site that is very close to its cruise port. Lined with many colorful buildings with beautiful architecture, this medieval port will have visually curious children overjoyed, and provides many priceless photo opportunities.

  • G Adventures

While the comparatively small ship of this company the ‘G Expedition’ has no special onboard facilities for small children, it makes up for it in activities ashore. Travelers with children over 10 that love exploring the wonders of the fjords are welcome on board the G Expedition, on a cruise that will take you through the Lofoten Island all around the Norwegian fjords.

Among the activities you might choose to enjoy during this cruise are nature walks and glacier hikes. G Adventures offers photography sessions for those who want to immortalize their memories of the Norwegian coastline. Interactive host lectures are also part of the package, making the cruise as entertaining as it is educational.

Definitely one for those who want a more hands on adventure.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line

For those looking for a full Norwegian experience, the Norwegian Cruise Line offers many opportunities. For an all-new experience of the fjords, you may want to try cruising aboard the Prima. This ship launches in 2022 as part of the Prima Class, and it is equipped to entertain children as young as just a few months old along with their parents.

Norwegian Cruises offer a luxury experience for those who want to see the fjords in style. Prima features an infinity pool and an outdoor spa with a glass wall that allows you to view the passing scenery in style.

The cruise also stops at the Måløy coastal village, where you may enjoy the silver sandy beaches which are always a hit with little ones.

  • Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises is a cruise line that takes you around the fjords, with the aim of making you and your family feel like celebrities travelling in style.

The ships Celebrity Reflection and  Celebrity Silhouette have both received makeovers recently, and they are both sailing to Norway this season. Celebrity Cruise ships now feature an exclusive area called “The Retreat,” where suite passengers can enjoy a restaurant, sun deck, and lounge.

Cruising in this manner is very popular for families with children as young as 3 years old. The cruises span over 7-9 days, and it takes those on board through the Nordfjord, where they can see the Briksdal Glacier – one of the largest glaciers in Europe.

How to Plan and Enjoy a Norwegian Fjords Cruise with Your Kids

Norway is a family-friendly country loaded with legends and folklore to catch the imagination of the young and old alike. With the release of the ever popular Frozen – a movie  inspired by the Norwegian Fjords – every child now wants to see the real life version of their fairy tale for real. To ensure your cruise through the Norwegian Fjords goes smoothly, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Planning with the Children

A family trip will only ever be successful if everyone is in on it – and this includes your children. Kids, especially as they get past the toddler age, have a good idea of the things they like and those things they don’t. They might give you an idea of what cruise to pick based on their preferences, or what itinerary you should pick. If you’re unsure, a cruise travel agent should be able to provide some insight as to which cruise suits your whole family’s preferences the most.

  • Appropriate Ship Choice

Every cruise ship going through the Norwegian Fjords is broadly oriented towards a certain category of customer. For this reason, you’ll want to ensure the cruise you’re planning on going on is family friendly.

Very often, these cruises will have child-oriented itineraries, along with clubs and playgrounds that can keep the children entertained while they are on the boat. Each cruise also stops at different ports, so you might want to choose one that stops in child-friendly and entertaining towns, and which offers child friendly excursions and tours.

  • Early Tour Research and Booking

Going on a cruise does not mean you are automatically signed up for tours, so you might have to research and book them in advance. Talk with your children, see what they might like to see while on your cruise. For instance, MSC Cruises have multiple child-friendly itineraries, but their popularity might require you to book them before departure.

Cruising in the Norwegian fjords with children might seem intimidating at first, but the right cruise can save you a lot of stress. Remember to choose a ship that has enough child-friendly facilities, along with exciting itineraries that might keep your children entertained.

Trolls, waterfalls & horrible history: A Norwegian fjords family cruise from £99

Norwegian fjords family cruise holidays just got a whole lot cheaper as Ambassador Cruise Line launches its multi-generational cruises for 2024.

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord

Norwegian fjords cruises are perfect for fans of picturesque scenery worthy of a Disney film, active adventures akin to a Tintin comic and tasty food that would make the Famous Five salivate.

The good news is that parents, children and grandchildren can all come together to explore this incredible corner of Norway in 2024 with Ambassador Cruise Line’s multigenerational cruise .

The British no-fly cruise line is once again putting on a Summertime Multi-generational Fjordland sailing next year. Taking place in August, the Norwegian fjords cruise is one of the few voyages Ambassador offers for children during the school holidays.

A huge perk of the family cruise to Norway is the fab price, not only is it gloriously afjordable (sorry) for adults – you can get up to 27 percent off full fares plus bag £50pp onboard credit* and free matchday tickets to Essex Cricket – but children sail for a mere £99 – and that’s all food and entertainment included!

Family cruise

Norwegian fjords cruise: What to do with the family

The Norwegian fjords family cruise packs in some fabulous destinations – Bergen, Flåm, Haugesund and Hardangerfjord – so whether you’re after an optional excursion of kayaking, trains or hiking, not to mention fabulous views and fascinating history, there’s something for every family member to enjoy.

What to see in Bergen

In Bergen – whether on an Ambassador shore excursion or alone – visit the iconic Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf where colourful traditional wooden buildings dating back to the 14th century house shops, museums, restaurants and galleries.

Learn how Bergen became a significant trading port (it was part of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading alliance in Northern Europe) during the Middle Ages. Fun fact: only German men lived here and they weren’t allowed to heat the buildings – not even in winter! – due to the fire risk. Brrrr.

Your young’uns complaining about how hard they have it now? In times gone by, hard-working apprentices living on the wharf weren’t allowed to leave for a whopping 10 years!

Bergen

Hungry? Don’t miss Bergen Fish Market near the harbour where you can find a variety of tasty seafood, including fresh fish, shellfish and traditional Norwegian dishes. Expect plenty of weird and wonderful marine critters strung up to ogle.

To get above the city on your Norwegian fjords family cruise, hop on the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen where the most fantastic playground awaits, packed with slides, climbing racks, towers, ziplines, swings and endless potential to build dens.

Maybe, you’ll even spot a troll in the mysterious Troll Forest where children can set off on a quest and put their imaginative skills to good use as they encounter different creatures and obstacles along the way.

Mount Fløyen Bergen

Bergen from Mount Fløyen

What to see in Flåm

Over in Flåm on your Norwegian fjords cruise, rally the troops and board the Flåm Railway, known as Flåmsbana, which will whisk you off on one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world through breathtaking landscapes of fjords, mountains and waterfalls, all in an old-timey carriage.

One of the railway’s stops is Kjosfossen waterfall where speakers play traditional Norwegian music, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot dancers dressed as “hulder” (mythical forest creatures) on the hillside, performing a captivating dance.

kjosfossen waterfall

Kjosfossen waterfall

What to see in Eidfjord

More stunning cascades can be found over in Eidfjord, on the southern shore of the Hardangerfjord – it’s is one of the longest and most picturesque fjords in Norway and fishing, kayaking, cycling and hiking are all outdoorsy options depending on what tickles your fancy as your cruise the Norwegian fjords.

Try to visit the Vøringsfossen waterfall if you can, too. Easily accessible, it’s one of the most famous in Norway and has a free fall of about 182 meters. Check out the viewpoints for the best vistas of the awe-inspiring waterfall and its surrounding gorge.

Vøringsfossen waterfall

Vøringsfossen waterfall

What to see in Haugesund

Last but not least, Haugesund is a great Ambassador port of call on this Norwegian fjords family cruise to learn more about Vikings. Considered the home of the Viking kings, the city was an essential centre for trade and shipping during the medieval period and played a significant role in Norway’s maritime heritage.

Visit Haraldshaugen Historic Park to see the Haraldshaugen Monument, which commemorates the unification of Norway under King Harald Fairhair, or head to Dokken Maritime Museum where kids can explore boats, exhibits and interactive displays to learn about the region’s seafaring heritage.

Back onboard, children will have plenty of opportunity to get into historical characters of their own if they wish. On this year’s family cruise, Ambassador held multiple fun pirate events as well as arts sessions, scavenger hunts and plays – so keep your eyes peeled for what will be available come 2024!

Maybe practice your Viking war cry now just in case.

Norway Itinerary – A Fjords Holiday with Kids

For this Norway itinerary you will fly into Bergen, Norway. Bergen is the gateway to your Norway fjords holiday! Since you are traveling Norway with kids, this itinerary is meant to limit the amount of driving time, while still seeing some of Norway’s best fjords.

To make things even easier while traveling Norway with kids, this Norway itinerary has 2 main stops meaning you’ll only need 2 places to stay. These two places will be your launching pads for exploring some of the best nearby sights. Having two main stops mean you don’t need to unpack and repack a bunch of times and your children will feel more at home.

Norway rivals New Zealand as our favorite place we’ve ever been and should be on your travel bucket list if it isn’t already. In fact, they remind us a lot of each other. We guarantee the landscapes you will witness on your Norway fjords holiday will leave you speechless. Now let’s begin the ultimate Norway itinerary for traveling the fjords of Norway with kids.

A view of the Norway fjords from above. The fjord water is bright blue against a rich green mountain side. A road trip through the Norway fjords is a must on a Norway itinerary.

Bergen, Norway

For this Norway itinerary plan to fly into Bergen, Norway. We have a ton of helpful tips for flying with a baby or kids to help make the flight a breeze.

Depending on the time you arrive in Bergen you may want to take this opportunity to see some of Bergen’s best attractions. If so, you can take a train from the airport to downtown Bergen and then rent a car from a downtown Bergen car rental . The city is extremely walkable and worth spending some time in if your Norway fjords holiday allows it.

The major attractions not to miss in Bergen are

  • Bryggen – Old wharf & traditional wooden buildings
  • Bergenhus Fortress – Harborside stone fortress & museum
  • KODE 4 – Museum showcasing Norwegian painters
  • University Museum – Museum of history, science & culture
  • Akvariet i Bergen – Aquarium with sea lion shows & penguins. A favorite if traveling Norway with kids!

The colorful houses that line the Atlantic Ocean in the city of Bergen Norway. The colorful buildings of white, red, yellow, blue and green with pointy roofs stand out against the green countryside.

Hardangerfjord

The first fjord we are going to explore on this Norway itinerary is Hardangerfjord. The main cities along Hardangerfjord we will be visiting during this Norway fjords holiday are Rosendal, Odda and Tyssedal Norway.

Hardangerfjord is the 2nd longest fjord in Norway and home to the world famous Trolltunga hike ! Hardanger is also known as “the kingdom of waterfalls” because it’s home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Norway.

A good place to stay that is in the middle of all these major attractions is Ænes Norway. We found an incredible Airbnb that was right on the fjord for an extremely reasonable price. The view is literally to die for!!

The drive from Bergen to Ænes is 2 hours and 20 minutes however that includes 2 ferry rides across fjords. The ferry rides are a great opportunity to get the kids out of car seats, give a bottle/nurse or have a snack. While driving around Norway with kids extra stops might be necessary which is why we are trying to limit the amount of time in the car on this Norway itinerary.

Our first Norway airbnb was right on Hardangerfjord. The view out the front windows looked out on the fjord and the mountains on the other side.

Rosendal is a small village on Hardangerfjord surrounded by a colorful countryside, rich agriculture and soaring mountains. The village is the launching point for many popular and incredible hikes and a few delicious restaurants.

Hattebergfossen

Hattebergfossen is an incredible waterfall hike near Rosendal. Along the trail you will see a lot of goats just minding their own business. If you are traveling Norway with kids they are sure to love watching the goats as they hike.

The hike is a nice easy walk through a valley until the very end where you have the option to climb to the top of the waterfall. This is a short but very steep climb, but the view at the top is incredibly. The valley is vibrant green and you can see Hardangerfjord in the distance.

At the top of the waterfall looking over Hardangerfjord and norway countryside.

Malmangernuten

Malmangernuten mountain is a difficult but beautiful hike you will want to have on your Norway itinerary. This hike has a lot of stairs that take you straight up the mountain so be prepared.

At the top you get a jaw dropping view of Hardangerfjord’s bright blue water against the Norway countryside. It was one of our favorite fjord views of the entire trip! It truly is a must see sight on your Norway fjords holiday.

The view over Hardangerfjord from the top of the hike.

Odda lies at the end of a narrow branch of Hardangerfjord called Sørfjord. Sandwiched between two national parks, the small town is surrounded by mountains.

Town of Odda

The town of Odda is worth exploring on your Norway fjords holiday. The village lines the fjord with red, blue, white and green houses, restaurants and magnificent shops to check out. Odda is a great stop when traveling Norway with kids. Spend a half a day shopping, eating at one of the restaurants and running around the parks.

The town of Odda Norway with houses and buildings climbing up the mountain side right off the Hardangerfjord.

Furebergsfossen waterfall

Furebergsfossen is an easy add to a Norway itinerary because you will pass it on the drive to Odda and you can’t miss it. This incredible waterfall gushes right next to the road!!! No hike required! There is a nice area to pull off the road to stop and admire Furebergsfossen and snap some photos before you continue on your drive.

Bondhusvatnet Lake and Bondhus Glacier

The hike to Bondhusvatnet Lake and Bondhus Glacier is the perfect hike to do when traveling Norway with kids. The hiking trail is very family friendly and can even acommodate a stroller if you’d like.

The trail is 5 km round trip to the outlet of the lake or 7 km if you’d like to hike to the glacier. The trail is sandwiched between steep mountains and surrounded by cascading waterfalls. But the grand finale is the view of Bondhusvatnet Lake at the end.

A view of the lake with a reflection of the mountains on it. In the distance you can also see the glacier.

Tyssedal is the last area to explore on Hardangerfjord on a Norway fjords holiday. The main attraction here is of course Trolltunga which might be the most well known scenic cliff in Norway. However, there is more to do here than hike Trolltunga.

Trolltunga is a challenging hike to complete if you are traveling Norway with kids, but we have a guide on exactly how we hiked Trolltunga with our toddler .

You’ve probably seen plenty of photos of Trolltunga on your Norway itinerary research. Trolltunga is a long and challenging hike that ends at a spectacular rock formation that hangs well above Ringedalsvatnet Lake. If you are a hiker this is hike you must do on your Norway fjords holiday.

Make sure to do your research before attempting this hike however. The weather changes quickly and conditions can get hairy quick. Plus availability changes with the seasons.

Lilletopp is a short but steep hike that offers fantastic views over Hardangerfjord. We did this hike on a day we wanted to hike Trolltunga but found out the conditions weren’t great at the top. It’s short but basically straight up so you will want to take your time.

Lilletopp is located between Hardangervidda and Folgefonna National Parks so you can image how gorgeous the surrounding views are. This hike also features a hydropower plant which is something you don’t see everyday and another exciting addition to this hike.

A view of Hardangerfjord from the top of Lilletopp hike.

Trail of 4 Waterfalls

The third and final hike to check out in Tyssedal is the trail of 4 waterfalls. As the name suggests, you’ll see 4 incredible and powerful waterfalls on this hike. The group of waterfalls together are called the Husedalen Waterfalls or individually named Tveitafossen, Nyastølsfossen, Nykkjesøyfossen, and Søtefossen (good luck pronouncing any of them).

Each waterfall you see seems bigger and more powerful than the last as it rushes down the Kinso River to Hardangerfjord. If you’re traveling Norway with kids they will love watching and feeling the mist in the air! Make sure this one is on your Norway itinerary.

The second fjord we are going to explore on this Norway itinerary is Nærøyfjord. This fjord is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its beauty and is the narrowest fjord arm in Norway. The narrow width and steep mountain sides make this the perfect fjord to experience on the water on a fjord cruise.

A good place to stay that is near Nærøyfjord and has plenty of other things to do near by is Voss, Norway. We stayed in a spacious home in the mountains that we found on Airbnb and loved our view.

The drive from Ænes to Voss is 2 hours and 20 minutes making it a very doable drive if you are traveling Norway with kids. You’ll pass plenty of scenery on the drive and even drive through a long tunnel that takes you through a fjord which is a super unique and exciting experience on its own.

Nærøyfjord in Norway fjords. Perfectly still and casting a perfect reflection of the surrounding mountain sides. Make sure Nærøyfjord is on your norway fjords holiday itinerary.

Voss, Norway

Voss, Norway, also known as the adrenaline capital of Norway, is not short on things to do. Go white water rafting, mountain biking or even skydiving if you and your kids are adrenaline junkies. If you’re visiting Norway in winter this is the perfect place to hit the slopes.

If you are looking for less of a thrill, you can ride a gondola to the top of the mountains. It’s a great activity to do if you’re traveling Norway with kids. There are also two beautiful lakes in town you can walk around and the darling Voss church to check out.

Bordalsgjelet Gorge

The Bordalsgielet Gorge is a unique natural attraction that is walking distance from the town of Voss. If you’d like to take the long way, walk from town. But it you’re short on time you can also drive right to the gorge. From the parking lot it is a very short and easy walk to see the gorge.

The gorge is a very narrow crevasse with a river running through it. The train takes you along the green and mossy cliff side and gives you a great view of the rushing river before.

A beautiful view of Bordalsgjelet Gorge near Voss Norway. This easy hike gives you a great view of the gorge with the rushing river at the bottom.

Tvindefossen

Tvindefossen waterfall is an easy add to a Norway itinerary because no hike is required to see this incredible waterfall! You can see it right from the road and chances are you will pass it multiple times as you explore this area. There is a place to park and a trail to get a closer look if you’d like.

Fjord Cruise

One of the best things you can do on your Norway fjords holiday is take a fjord cruise down Nærøyfjord . This is one of the most spectacular fjords in all of Norway and the best way to see it is from the water.

The fjord cruise begins in either Flåm or Gudvangen. The entire trip takes about 2 hours one way. If you begin from Flåm, you’ll start your sailing journey through Aurlandsfjord before continuing through Nærøyfjord and ending in Gudvangen. Or you can start in Gudvangen and do the journey in the other direction.

To get back to your starting point you can book a shuttle bus ticket.

Enjoy your trip!

That concludes our Norway itinerary if you are traveling through the fjords of Norway with kids. You can still have an incredible Norway fjords holiday without spending hours upon hours in the car. This Norway itinerary allows you to see two of the best fjords in the entire country, including one that is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

What unique experiences can I expect on a Norwegian fjord cruise?

A Norwegian fjord cruise offers a wealth of unique experiences that set it apart from other types of cruises. From breathtaking natural landscapes to rich cultural encounters, travellers can expect a journey filled with unforgettable moments. Here are some of the unique experiences you can look forward to on a Norwegian fjord cruise:

Spectacular fjord scenery

One of the main attractions of a Norwegian fjord cruise is the opportunity to witness some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world. The fjords are characterized by towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and lush green valleys. Cruising through these narrow waterways provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the grandeur of the landscape. Highlights include the dramatic Geirangerfjord, the narrow Nærøyfjord and the expansive Sognefjord.

Midnight sun and northern lights

Depending on the time of year, a Norwegian fjord cruise can offer the chance to experience either the midnight sun or the northern lights. During the summer months, the midnight sun creates a surreal phenomenon where the sun never sets, bathing the landscape in a golden glow. In the winter, the northern lights or aurora borealis, dance across the night sky in a mesmerizing display of colours. Both phenomena provide unforgettable memories and stunning photo opportunities.

Cultural encounters

Norwegian fjord cruises often include stops in charming towns and cities where travellers can immerse themselves in the local culture. Whether it’s exploring the historic Bryggen district in Bergen, visiting the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo or strolling through the colourful streets of Ålesund, each port offers a unique cultural experience. Engaging with local traditions, tasting Norwegian cuisine and learning about the country’s history and folklore add depth to the cruise experience.

Outdoor adventures

The stunning natural landscapes of Norway’s fjords provide the perfect backdrop for a range of outdoor adventures. Many cruises offer excursions that allow travellers to explore the fjords up close, whether it’s through hiking, kayaking or even RIB boat tours. Popular activities include hiking to Pulpit Rock in Lysefjord, kayaking in the serene waters of Nærøyfjord and exploring the glaciers in Hardangerfjord. These adventures offer an active way to experience the beauty of the fjords.

Wildlife watching

Norway’s fjords are teeming with wildlife and a cruise offers the chance to see some of these incredible animals in their natural habitat. From seabirds nesting on the cliffs to seals lounging on rocks, there is plenty to observe. In certain areas, you might even spot whales breaching the surface or porpoises playing in the water. Birdwatchers will also delight in the variety of species, including puffins, eagles and gulls.

What are the upcoming restrictions on larger cruise ships entering the UNESCO fjords?

The Norwegian government has announced significant restrictions on larger cruise ships entering certain UNESCO-listed fjords. These measures aim to preserve the pristine natural environment, reduce pollution and protect the delicate ecosystems of these breathtaking landscapes. The regulations are part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable tourism in Norway.

Affected fjords and reasons for restrictions

Starting from 2026, the new law will limit the number of large cruise ships allowed to enter Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, which are part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for their dramatic scenery, these fjords feature steep cliffs, lush greenery and cascading waterfalls. They are among the most visited fjords in Norway, attracting thousands of cruise passengers each year.

The restrictions are being implemented to mitigate the environmental impact of large cruise ships, which contribute to air and water pollution and can disrupt local ecosystems. Large ships release significant amounts of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which can harm both the environment and human health. The aim is to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of these fjords for future generations. Ships will need to meet stringent environmental standards, including reduced emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Additionally, there will be a cap on the number of passengers that can visit these fjords on cruise ships, ensuring that tourism remains sustainable.

Exploring with smaller and eco-friendly vessels

With these restrictions in place, travellers will need to consider alternative methods to explore the UNESCO fjords. Smaller cruise ships and eco-friendly vessels are excellent options. For instance, Havila Voyages operates environmentally friendly ships that use liquefied natural gas (LNG) and battery power to reduce emissions. Adventure Canada offers small ship expeditions with a focus on eco-friendly practices and immersive experiences in nature.

Local ferries and boats

Local ferries and boats provide another alternative. Operators like Fjord1 and Norled run services within the fjords using modern low-emission vessels, offering a more intimate experience and the chance to see the fjords up close. Several local tour operators also provide electric or hybrid boat tours, offering quiet pollution-free journeys through the fjords.

Land-based tours and excursions

Land-based tours and excursions are a fantastic way to experience the fjords’ beauty without contributing to water pollution. Norway has an extensive network of hiking trails and scenic viewpoints, such as the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint in Geiranger and the Stegastein viewpoint above Aurlandsfjord. Guided cycling tours are also available, offering a unique way to explore the fjords and surrounding landscapes.

Kayaking and RIB safaris

For those seeking adventure, kayaking in the fjords offers a peaceful and immersive experience, allowing travellers to explore hidden coves and waterfalls. RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) safaris provide an exhilarating way to see the fjords, with the added benefit of accessing areas that larger vessels cannot reach.

Smaller cruise lines and alternative vessels

There are also several smaller cruise lines and alternative vessels that meet the new environmental standards and can still access these restricted fjords. Hurtigruten operates smaller ships that adhere to stricter environmental standards and can still access areas where larger ships are prohibited. Ponant, a luxury expedition cruise line, focuses on sustainability and offers in-depth explorations of the fjords. Lindblad Expeditions, partnered with National Geographic, offers small ship cruises with an emphasis on nature, wildlife and responsible travel. Seabourn, known for its luxurious small ships, offers itineraries that include the Norwegian fjords while adhering to high environmental standards.

Adaptations by larger cruise lines

With the upcoming restrictions on larger cruise ships entering the UNESCO fjords, cruise lines operating in Norway are exploring various strategies to continue offering unique experiences while adhering to the new regulations. These measures aim to balance the need for tourism with the preservation of the fjords’ natural beauty.

Several cruise lines, including industry giants like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises, are investing in greener technologies to reduce their environmental impact. These companies are retrofitting their ships with advanced emissions control systems, such as exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), which significantly reduce sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions. Additionally, they are exploring the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner fuel alternative. MSC Cruises, for example, has announced plans to introduce LNG-powered ships in the coming years, which could potentially meet the stringent environmental standards required for entry into the UNESCO fjords.

Some cruise lines are considering deploying smaller, more environmentally friendly ships specifically designed to meet the new regulations. Hurtigruten, known for its environmental initiatives, is already leading the way with hybrid-powered ships like the MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen. These vessels combine battery packs with traditional engines, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Other cruise lines might follow suit by introducing similar smaller, eco-friendly ships into their fleets to access restricted fjord areas.

To comply with the new regulations, larger cruise lines are also looking at altering their itineraries. Ships from lines like Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises might dock at ports just outside the restricted zones, such as Ålesund or Bergen. From there, passengers could transfer to smaller, eco-friendly boats for day trips into the fjords. This approach would allow travellers to experience the fjords’ beauty while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

How much do Norwegian fjord cruises cost?

The cost of Norwegian fjord cruises can vary widely based on several factors, including the cruise line, the duration of the cruise, the type of accommodation, the time of year and the specific itinerary. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to pay for a Norwegian fjord cruise, taking these variables into account.

Factors affecting the cost

Different cruise lines cater to various budgets and offer different levels of luxury and service. Premium cruise lines like Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn and Silversea generally charge higher prices compared to more budget-friendly options like MSC Cruises or Norwegian Cruise Line.

The length of the cruise significantly impacts the overall cost. Shorter cruises, such as 7-day itineraries, will typically cost less than extended voyages of 10 to 14 days or more. The type of cabin you choose will also affect the price. Inside cabins are the most affordable option, while oceanview cabins, balconies and suites come at a higher cost. Luxury suites with additional amenities and services will be the most expensive.

Cruise prices can fluctuate based on the season. The peak cruising season for Norwegian fjords is from May to September when the weather is milder and daylight hours are longer. Cruises during this period tend to be more expensive. Off-peak months, such as April and October, may offer lower prices but come with cooler weather and shorter days. The specific ports of call and included excursions can also impact the cost. Cruises that visit more remote or less frequently visited fjords may be priced higher due to the exclusive nature of the itinerary.

General price range

For budget-conscious travellers, prices for Norwegian fjord cruises with lines like MSC Cruises or Norwegian Cruise Line can start at approximately €700 to €1,400 per person for a 7-day itinerary in an inside cabin. These cruises offer basic amenities and fewer inclusions.

Mid-range options, such as those offered by Holland America Line or Princess Cruises, typically range from €1,400 to €2,900 per person for a 7 to 10-day cruise in an oceanview or balcony cabin. These cruises provide a good balance of comfort, service and included amenities.

For a more luxurious experience, cruise lines like Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn and Silversea offer prices starting at around €3,500 per person and can go up to €11,500 or more for longer itineraries or higher-category suites. These cruises include additional services, such as gourmet dining, premium excursions and personalised service.

Additional costs to consider

While some cruises include a selection of shore excursions, many charge extra for these activities. Prices for shore excursions can range from €60 to €350 or more, depending on the type and length of the excursion.

Additional costs on board can include specialty dining, spa treatments, alcoholic beverages, gratuities and Wi-Fi access. It’s important to budget for these extras, as they can add up over the course of the cruise. Travel insurance is an important consideration for any cruise, providing coverage for unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies or lost luggage. The cost of travel insurance will vary based on the length of the trip and the coverage selected.

Are there any all-inclusive Norwegian fjord cruises?

All-inclusive Norwegian fjord cruises offer travellers a seamless and luxurious experience, where most expenses are covered in the upfront cost. These cruises are ideal for those who prefer to have everything taken care of in advance, allowing them to relax and enjoy their journey without worrying about additional costs. Several cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages, each providing a unique blend of amenities and services.

An all-inclusive Norwegian fjord cruise typically includes accommodations, meals, beverages, shore excursions, onboard entertainment and gratuities. What should I pack for a Norwegian fjord cruise?

Packing for a Norwegian fjord cruise requires thoughtful preparation to ensure you are comfortable and prepared for a variety of weather conditions and activities. Norway’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the fjords, where you might experience sun, rain and cooler temperatures all in one day. Here’s a comprehensive packing list to help you get ready for your cruise.

Layered clothing

The key to staying comfortable in Norway’s varying climate is to dress in layers. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating mid-layers like fleece or wool and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Pack long-sleeve shirts, t-shirts, warm sweaters and fleeces for insulation. Waterproof trousers and a high-quality, breathable waterproof jacket with a hood are essential for staying dry.

Casual and evening wear

Bring comfortable trousers, jeans and hiking pants for casual wear and outdoor activities. Don’t forget evening wear for formal or semi-formal nights, such as a cocktail dress or a suit. Swimwear is also handy for pools, hot tubs and spas onboard.

Outdoor and casual shoes

A sturdy pair of waterproof hiking boots is essential for shore excursions and outdoor activities. Also, pack comfortable walking shoes for casual wear and exploring ports of call. For evenings, bring a pair of dress shoes, and for lounging by the pool or walking around the ship, sandals or flip-flops are useful.

Weather-appropriate gear

Even in summer, it can get cold, especially in the mornings and evenings. Pack a warm hat, gloves and a scarf for extra warmth. Sunglasses are important to protect against the sun’s glare off the water.

Practical items

A small backpack or daypack is useful for carrying essentials during shore excursions. Binoculars can enhance your experience by allowing you to see distant wildlife and scenic views up close. A reusable water bottle is eco-friendly and ensures you stay hydrated.

Travel documents and medications

Ensure you have your passport, cruise tickets, travel insurance details and any necessary visas. Bring any prescription medications you need, as well as a small first aid kit with over-the-counter medications for common ailments like seasickness, headaches and colds.

Toiletries and electronics

Pack your usual toiletries, but remember that many ships provide basics like shampoo and soap. Include sunscreen and lip balm with SPF to protect against the sun. Bring a good camera to capture the stunning scenery, along with extra memory cards and batteries. Norway uses the European plug type (C and F), so bring an appropriate adapter for your electronic devices if you’re coming from outside Europe.

How can I prepare for the weather on a Norwegian fjord cruise?

Preparing for the weather on a Norwegian fjord cruise is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. The weather in Norway, especially in the fjords, can be quite unpredictable, with conditions ranging from sunny and warm to rainy and chilly within the same day. Here’s how you can prepare for the varying weather conditions you might encounter.

Understanding the climate

Norway’s climate varies significantly depending on the time of year and the region. In the fjords, summer temperatures typically range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), while spring and autumn can be cooler, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in the northern fjords. Monitoring the weather forecast

Before and during your cruise, regularly checking the weather forecast for the areas you will be visiting is crucial. Using reliable sources like Yr.no and Weather.com provides accurate and up-to-date weather information for Norway. Being informed about the forecast can help you plan your daily activities and ensure you are dressed appropriately for the conditions.

Dressing in layers

Layering is key to staying comfortable in Norway’s variable weather. Start with moisture-wicking clothing to keep sweat away from your skin, add insulating layers like fleece or wool to retain heat, and finish with a waterproof and windproof jacket to protect against rain and wind. This approach allows you to add or remove layers as the temperature changes throughout the day.

Bringing waterproof gear

Rain is common in the fjords, so having waterproof clothing is essential. Investing in a high-quality, breathable waterproof jacket with a hood and waterproof trousers can keep you dry during excursions and outdoor activities, ensuring you stay comfortable regardless of the weather.

Staying warm with accessories

Even in summer, the mornings and evenings can be chilly. Packing a warm hat, gloves and a scarf can help you stay warm, especially if you plan to spend time on deck or participate in outdoor activities. These accessories are crucial for maintaining body heat in cooler temperatures.

Choosing appropriate footwear

Selecting the right footwear is important for various weather conditions and activities. Waterproof hiking boots are essential for shore excursions and outdoor activities, keeping your feet dry and providing support and traction. Comfortable walking shoes are also important for exploring ports and onboard activities.

Preparing for sun exposure

Even on cloudy days, the sun’s rays can be strong, especially when reflected off the water. Protecting yourself by bringing sunglasses to shield your eyes and applying sunscreen regularly to exposed skin can prevent sunburn and ensure you stay comfortable while enjoying the scenery.

Packing for onboard comfort

The temperature inside the ship can vary, so packing comfortable clothing for onboard activities is a good idea. Lightweight layers that can be easily added or removed are ideal for adjusting to different indoor temperatures, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout your cruise.

Are there eco-friendly or sustainable Norwegian fjord cruises?

Several cruise lines are leading the way in sustainability, implementing measures to minimise their environmental impact and promote responsible tourism. Notable examples include:

Hurtigruten is a pioneer in sustainable cruising with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. They operate hybrid-powered ships like the MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen which use a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and battery power to reduce emissions. Hurtigruten also focuses on reducing single-use plastics, offering locally sourced and sustainable food and supporting various conservation projects.

Havila Voyages operates with a strong focus on sustainability, using ships that run on LNG and battery packs to minimize emissions. Their ships are designed to be as energy-efficient as possible with a commitment to reducing plastic waste and sourcing food locally to support Norwegian producers.

Ponant, a luxury expedition cruise line, has been at the forefront of eco-friendly cruising. They have implemented stringent environmental policies including using cleaner fuels, reducing waste and minimizing water usage. Ponant’s new hybrid electric ship, Le Commandant Charcot, uses LNG and battery power to reduce its environmental footprint.

Many cruise lines are adopting eco-friendly practices to minimize their impact on the environment. These practices include using hybrid and electric propulsion systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower fuel consumption. Waste reduction and recycling programs are also being implemented to eliminate single-use plastics, recycle materials and compost organic waste. Energy efficiency is being improved with LED lighting, advanced HVAC systems and energy-efficient appliances. Ships are also using heat recovery systems to make use of excess energy.

Water conservation measures are another focus, with advanced wastewater treatment systems, desalination plants to produce fresh water from seawater and water-saving fixtures in cabins and public areas. Sustainable sourcing is also a priority, with many cruise lines offering menus with locally sourced, organic and sustainably produced ingredients as well as using eco-friendly cleaning products and toiletries.

When selecting an eco-friendly or sustainable Norwegian fjord cruise, consider researching cruise lines with strong environmental policies and a commitment to sustainability. Look for certifications from organizations like Green Marine, Travelife or EarthCheck which indicate that a cruise line adheres to high standards of environmental performance and sustainability. Smaller ships tend to have a lower environmental impact compared to larger vessels, using less fuel, generating less waste and often accessing more remote areas with minimal disturbance to the environment.

Choosing cruises that promote responsible tourism practices, such as supporting local communities, respecting wildlife and contributing to conservation efforts, is also important. By opting for a cruise with strong sustainability credentials, you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the fjords while supporting efforts to preserve this unique environment for future generations.

What are the embarkation and disembarkation processes for Norwegian fjord cruises?

From the moment you arrive at the port to the time you step off the ship at the end of your journey, here’s what you can expect during these crucial stages of your cruise.

Embarkation process

Arriving at the port in good time is essential. Most cruise lines recommend arriving at least a few hours before the scheduled departure. This allows enough time to complete the check-in process and board the ship without any rush.

Upon arrival, you will proceed to the check-in area. Here, cruise line staff will check your travel documents, including your passport, cruise ticket and any necessary visas. You will also need to complete a health declaration form. After check-in, your luggage will be taken by porters and delivered to your cabin later. You will then pass through security, similar to airport procedures, where your carry-on bags will be screened.

Once through security, you will be directed to the boarding area. Cruise staff will welcome you aboard and guide you to your cabin. Most cruise lines issue a cruise card upon boarding. This card serves as your room key, onboard identification and payment method for any purchases on the ship. Take some time to familiarise yourself with the ship’s layout and attend the mandatory safety drill, usually held before departure.

During the cruise

Each day, the ship will dock at different ports for shore excursions. The process is usually straightforward. Listen for announcements or check the daily programme for disembarkation times and procedures. If you have booked an excursion through the cruise line, you will likely meet at a designated spot on the ship before heading ashore as a group. Ensure you have your cruise card and any necessary items for the day.

Disembarkation process

As your cruise comes to an end, you will receive detailed information about the disembarkation process. This typically includes a schedule, luggage tags and instructions for the day of departure. The night before disembarkation, you will need to pack your luggage and leave it outside your cabin door for collection. Ensure you keep any essentials, travel documents and valuables in your carry-on bag.

On the final morning, you will have breakfast on the ship. After breakfast, it’s time to vacate your cabin by the designated time, usually mid-morning. You will wait in a designated area until your disembarkation group is called.

When your group is called, proceed to the disembarkation area with your carry-on bags. Present your cruise card one last time to finalise your account and exit the ship. Collect your checked luggage from the terminal, where it will be grouped by the luggage tag colour provided. Pass through customs and immigration, where your passport and any necessary declarations will be checked.

Once you have cleared customs, arrange for your onward travel. Many cruise lines offer transfer services to nearby airports or city centres. Alternatively, taxis and public transportation options are usually available at the port.

Guide Norwegian Fjord cruises Norway

How do I get to and from the ports for Norwegian fjord cruises?

Getting to and from the ports for Norwegian fjord cruises involves careful planning to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. Whether you’re arriving by air, train or car, here’s a guide to help you navigate your way to and from the embarkation and disembarkation points.

Arriving by air

Most Norwegian fjord cruises depart from ports in cities like Bergen, Oslo and Stavanger. The nearest major airports are Bergen Airport (BGO), Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) and Stavanger Airport (SVG). These airports have international and domestic flights connecting to various destinations.

Transfers from the airport

Once you arrive at the airport, you have several options to get to the port. Many cruise lines offer shuttle services that can be booked in advance. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or use public transportation. For instance, Bergen Airport is about 20 kilometres from the port and can be reached by taxi, shuttle or the Bergen Light Rail.

Arriving by train

Norway has an efficient train network that connects major cities. The Norwegian State Railways (NSB) operates trains from Oslo to Bergen, Stavanger and other cities. The scenic Bergen Line is particularly popular, offering stunning views of the Norwegian countryside.

Transfers from the train station

Once you arrive at the train station, you can take a taxi or use local public transportation to get to the port. In Bergen, the train station is centrally located and it’s a short taxi ride to the cruise terminal. Public buses and trams are also available.

Arriving by car

If you prefer to drive, Norway’s roads are well-maintained and driving can be a scenic and enjoyable way to reach your embarkation port. Make sure to check parking options at or near the port, as many cruise terminals offer long-term parking facilities.

Parking options

Parking options vary by port. In Bergen, for example, you can find parking facilities close to the cruise terminal. It’s advisable to book parking in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure availability and secure the best rates.

Public transportation

Norway’s public transportation system is reliable and efficient. Buses and trams operate in most cities, providing convenient options for reaching the port. In Oslo, the public transport system includes buses, trams and the metro, making it easy to get around.

In coastal areas, ferries are a common mode of transport. They can be a scenic and practical way to travel, especially if you’re coming from nearby islands or coastal towns.

Disembarkation and onward travel

After your cruise, you’ll need to arrange transportation from the port to your next destination. Many cruise lines offer transfer services to nearby airports or city centres. Taxis and public transportation are also readily available at most ports.

It’s a good idea to book any necessary transportation in advance to avoid last-minute stress. This includes airport shuttles, train tickets and parking reservations. Planning ahead ensures a smoother transition and allows you to enjoy your travel experience without unnecessary worries.

Guide Norwegian Fjord cruises Norway

What documentation or visas are required for a Norwegian fjord cruise?

Ensuring you have the correct documentation and visas for a Norwegian fjord cruise is essential for a smooth and trouble-free journey. Requirements can vary depending on your nationality and the countries included in your cruise itinerary. Here’s a guide to help you understand what you need.

A valid passport is required for all international travellers on a Norwegian fjord cruise. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your cruise. This rule applies to most countries, so it’s important to check the validity of your passport well in advance of your departure.

European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) citizens

Citizens of EU and EEA countries, including those from the Schengen Area, do not require a visa to enter Norway for short stays including cruises.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

Travellers from countries outside the EU and EEA, including the United States, Canada, Australia and many others, can enter Norway without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period under the Schengen visa waiver programme. However, it is crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality before travelling.

Schengen visa

If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you must obtain it before your trip. A Schengen visa allows you to travel within the Schengen Area, which includes Norway, for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You should apply for the visa well in advance at the consulate or embassy of the country that is your main destination or the first point of entry in the Schengen Area.

Travel insurance

While not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended for a Norwegian fjord cruise. It provides coverage for unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage and more. Some cruise lines may require proof of travel insurance before boarding.

Health declarations

Due to the ongoing global health situation, some cruise lines may require passengers to complete health declaration forms before boarding. These forms typically ask about recent travel history, current health status and any symptoms related to illnesses like COVID-19.

Cruise line requirements

Each cruise line may have specific documentation and health requirements. It’s important to check with your cruise line well in advance to ensure you have all the necessary documents and meet their requirements.

Destination-specific requirements

If your cruise includes stops in other countries besides Norway, make sure to check the entry requirements for those destinations as well. Some countries may have additional visa or health requirements.

Are there options for shorter or longer Norwegian fjord cruises?

Norwegian fjord cruises come in a variety of lengths, catering to different preferences and schedules. Whether you are looking for a brief getaway or an extended exploration, there are options to suit your needs. Here’s a look at the choices available for shorter and longer Norwegian fjord cruises.

Weekend cruises

Weekend cruises are perfect for travellers with limited time who want a taste of the fjords. These cruises typically last two to four days and depart from ports such as Bergen or Oslo. Weekend cruises often include visits to nearby fjords like the Hardangerfjord or the Sognefjord, offering a quick but memorable experience of Norway’s stunning landscapes.

3-5 day cruises

Slightly longer cruises of three to five days provide a more in-depth exploration while still fitting into a short holiday. These cruises might visit multiple fjords and ports, including Aurlandsfjord and Geirangerfjord. This duration allows for a balanced mix of scenic cruising and shore excursions.

7-10 day cruises

A 7-10 day cruise is the most popular option, offering a comprehensive exploration of the Norwegian fjords. These cruises often start in cities like Bergen, Oslo or even Copenhagen, and visit several major fjords such as Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord and Lysefjord. This duration allows for more in-depth excursions, cultural experiences and time to enjoy the ship’s amenities.

11-14 day cruises

For those with more time, 11-14 day cruises provide an extended journey through the fjords and beyond. These cruises might include additional ports in Northern Norway, such as Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands, or even combine visits to neighbouring countries like Iceland or the British Isles. The longer duration allows for a more relaxed pace and the chance to explore remote and less-visited areas.

Extended voyages (15+ days)

Extended voyages lasting 15 days or more offer the ultimate Norwegian fjord experience. These cruises typically include comprehensive itineraries covering all major fjords and coastal towns, along with additional stops in other Scandinavian countries or even the Arctic Circle. Extended cruises are perfect for those who want to immerse themselves fully in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise: 32 Tips You NEED to Know

In June 2018 I took a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords with my lovely Mum. In this post, I’ll share with you the things I wish I knew before my first cruise to Norway. Including:

When to cruise to Norway What to pack on a Norwegian Fjords cruise What to do onboard What to do in: Bergen, Olden, Stavanger and Aldalsnes.

p&o britannia cruise ship norwegian fjords norway

When is the best time to cruise the Norwegian Fjords?

The Norwegian Fjords cruising season runs from May until September. The only cruise line that offers Norwegian Fjords cruises all year round is Hurtigruten. Peak time tends to be in July and August with this itinerary being particularly popular with families.

In the UK children are off school from mid-July until early September so if you can avoid travelling at this time I would, not only will it be busier but it’ll be significantly more expensive!

When is The Best Time to Cruise to Norway? Seasons, Price, Weather and More

Norwegian Fjords tip #1

  • I would recommend cruising at the beginning or end of the summer season. You’ll get the best deals at this time and the ships won’t be too busy. May-June or September would be be my recommendation. You still have a good chance of some sunshine but more on that later in the post…

norwegian fjords cruise tips blue skies sunshine weather andalsnes

Norwegian Fjords tip #2

Be aware that if you travel in the summer, it will be light a lot of the time. Sleeping is never a problem for me, but it is a bit confusing when you have been out for dinner, watched the show, come out and it is still daylight! – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

It’s true! In some parts of Norway they even have a ‘midnight sun’. Cruise ship cabins usually have pretty thick curtains so I don’t have any trouble sleeping but if you are somebody who cannot tolerate even the smallest amount of light in the room when you sleep then you might want to consider an inside cabin.

What is the weather like on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

The weather in Norway is unpredictable and very often wet. The weather in Summer SHOULD be dry and can even be pretty warm. We cruised in June and it rained every single day… However, I have a few friends who cruised two weeks earlier had glorious sunshine every day and temperatures reached 30c! (90f). I would not base your decision on when to go around the weather. It’s extremely unpredictable!

The weather means that you need to remember to bring the following things…

What to bring

Norwegian fjords tip #3.

  • Take sensible shoes, a waterproof jacket, jeans, jumpers (sweaters). As I mentioned above we had rain every single day. Annoyingly the UK was experiencing a heat wave at the time! A waterproof jacket/a coat is without a doubt the most important thing you should pack. I wore my red coat every single day.

  • Make sure you pack some dresses/shorts! This one might seem a bit silly given what I said above but the weather can reach 30c (90f). It can also vary a lot between ports so just because you have one rainy day doesn’t mean it will rain for the entire cruise.

Norwegian Fjords tip #5

Pack some small binoculars – I forgot mine. Obviously didn’t pay enough attention to the holiday packing spreadsheet in my excitement! – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

The views are INCREDIBLE as you sail around the Norwegian Fjords. I don’t really use binoculars but mum likes to so if you’d like to spy on people as you go by it can be worth packing binoculars. A good camera with a zoom can also work the same way.

Norwegian Fjords tip #6

  • Bring the best camera you have! (Or at least your phone). All of my photos were taken on my iPhone because quite frankly I have no idea how to use a decent DSLR camera. You’ll want to take SO many photos. Look at this!! It’s INCREDIBLE.

Norwegian Fjords tip #7

  • Bring your phone and use it. I usually say you should keep your phone in airplane mode when you are at sea. However, when cruising around the Norwegian Fjords you’re often close enough to land to be able to pick up 4G from land. If you are in doubt about how your phone will work at sea I have another post about that here: How do mobile phones work at sea? (If you’re American a mobile phone = a cell phone). I know we don’t go on cruises to spend all of our time on our phone but being able to send messages/emails/photos to friends and family back home is always a bonus.Mum mostly used it to send photos of me to my dad…

 What to do onboard

These tips are general to the whole of Norway. There are more specific tips about the ports that we visited at the end of this post.

Norwegian Fjords tip #8

Book a balcony cabin!

Norwegian Fjords tip #9

  • Make sure you book whatever tours you’d like to do as early as possible. We booked ours onboard and a lot of them were already sold out which limited our options. Ideally, you should book the tours before you travel. It’s usually possible to do this on the website of most cruise lines. If not try and book the tours on the first day to avoid disappointment!I am below looking very pleased with myself at the Briksdal glacier in Olden.

  • Be aware that a lot of things are closed on Sundays! If you are docking on a Sunday don’t assume that shops will be open. It’s always best to do your research and check before you cruise.

  • Look out for weird things in the souvenir shops… I managed to find a whale sausage!

  • Bring your quilt onto the balcony! (Duvet). I’m not kidding. If you can also make yourself a cup of tea that’ll make it even better! I mostly had to do this because I hadn’t planned for such cold weather so didn’t bring the right clothes. Hopefully by reading this post you won’t make the same mistake that I did! (I thought June would be okay!)

Unless there is somewhere you particularly wish to visit, look at at the weather forecast before booking excursions..

It is rather a waste of money to book an expensive trip up a mountain or to see the Troll Wall when everything is shrouded in fog, and you can’t see anything anyway! When we got to the top of the funicular railway in Bergen this is the view that we were greeted with…

This is what it was meant to look like!

In the next section of this post, we talk about the ports of Bergen, Olden, Stavanger and Andalsnes.

Bergen cruise port tips

Norwegian fjords tip #15.

  • Take the funicular railway! The number one attraction in Bergen appears to be the funicular railway. It is a gentle stroll to the bottom of the railway, and easy to pay by credit card – no kroner needed. Approx £9.75 for two adults one way. Once at the top it is a lovely walk back down the hill on a tarmacked road, through the wooded hillside. No need to pay for an excursion!. We found out from a fellow passenger later that there is actually a lake ten minutes from top of the hill, may be worth a look if its a sunny day.

Norwegian Fjords tip #16

  • If you do take the funicular railway go later in the day. We went in the morning and couldn’t see a thing because of the fog! We could have been anywhere. If you are physically able to, make sure you walk back down. The path is a winding road and you’ll see some amazing sights along the way! It was really cool for us to be able to get below the clouds and see the ships.

Norwegian Fjords tip #17

  • Look out for the trees that have their own jumpers! I’m not kidding.

norwegian fjords trees jumpers bergen knitted sweaters

Norwegian Fjords tip #18

  • Be aware that you may sail away from Bergen quite early. I’m not too sure why they do this but a sail away of 3 pm can be quite standard. It’s probably just because this is the last port on the itinerary for cruise lines like P&O and Princess. The cruise line will let you know what time the ship is set to sail.

Stavanger Cruise Tips

Norwegian fjords tip #19.

  • Visit the old town. It is easy to wander around is and genuinely just a lovely place! There will be a lot of tourists here. I wonder what it would be like to live in one of these houses with thousands of tourists wandering up and down your street. No wonder they all have net curtains.

Norwegian Fjords tip #20

  • Visit the petroleum museum. Okay, this one is a little weird. I had no idea that there was a petroleum museum in Stavanger but SO many people have asked me if I went. They all seem to love it! It has a 4.5/5 star rating on trip advisor so must be something special…

Norwegian Fjords tip #21

  • Be careful when walking around the roads. Even in the newer part of town, the roads can be a little difficult. If you are in a wheelchair it may be a good idea to stick to the main streets and not venture up and down all of the little cobbled streets that I found myself wandering around.

norway norwegian fjords cobbled streets old town bergen

Norwegian Fjords tip #22

  • Check out the other ships. There are usually multiple cruise ships docked in Stavanger at the same time. Make sure you get out and have a peek at the other ships! This is always one of my favourite things to do in a port. We were docked beside the MSC Orchestra and the Viking Sun. (Bit ironic since it rained every day on this cruise).

Norwegian Fjords tip #23

  • Wander around the lake at Stravanger park. There is a lovely little park not too far from the cruise port. It is easy to walk there and wandering around the lake is very pleasant. Even in the rain, it was lovely. The park is right beside a cathedral.

Olden Cruise Tips

Norwegian fjords tip #24.

  • Have your photo taken with a troll. Go on, you know you want too!

Norwegian Fjords tip #25

  • Visit the Briksdal glacier. I would 100% recommend doing this. The glacier is SO COOL (mind the pun) and there are lots of lovely paths to walk around near it. There is even a couple of toilets here which I really appreciated. It takes around 45 minutes to get here from the cruise ship but you’ll get to see some amazing views on the way.

norwegian fjords stavanger briksdal glacier p&o britannia

Norwegian Fjords tip #26

  • Skip the Loen Skylift. We took the Loen Skylift and I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. The price of this is around £50 per person! (I know Norway is expensive but that is mad). The skylift only goes up and down every 30 minutes and 35 people fit in one skylift meaning you can’t really see anything on the way up or down. I really hate to be negative and tell people not to do things but I honestly just thought this was a waste of money. The views are really good but I don’t think £50 worth of good. Maybe it would have been better if it wasn’t so blooming cold!!

norwegian fjords norway cruise loen skylift

Norwegian Fjords tip #27

  • Take as many photos of the ship as you can! There is NO better backdrop than that of the Norwegian Fjords. Even in bad weather, the ships look amazing. I honestly think the clouds and fog add a little something which makes it seem mysterious?!

norwegian fjords norway p&o britannia

Norwegian Fjords tip #28

  • Do NOT miss the sail away! As we departed Olden a small cafe on the ship blasted out ‘I am sailing’ by Rod Stewart followed by ‘Time tooo…. say… goooddbyyyyyeee’ by Katherine Jenkins.  Don’t pretend you didn’t just sing that in your head. I did!

norwegian fjords cruise with toddler

Andalsnes Cruise Tips:

Norwegian fjords tip #29.

  • Take a gamble on the troll wall? I’m not TOO sure if this really counts as a tip but I would say think twice about booking a trip to the bottom of troll wall. If the weather is bad you won’t see a thing. I hadn’t ever looked up the troll wall before so I had no idea what I was meant to be seeing.

norwegian fjords norway andalsnes troll wall

Norwegian Fjords tip #30

  • Head UP the troll wall. I made some friends on this cruise and they told me that they had been UP the troll wall and had amazing views from up there. If I went again I would pick a tour that took you to the top of the wall whereas ours just took us to the bottom where we stared up at the clouds.

Other bonus tips!

Norwegian fjords tip #31.

Put a currency converter on your phone for Norwegian Kroner. Its pretty expensive, and you don’t want to get a nasty shock when you open your credit card bill! Do you really need a wooden troll or reindeer sausages? I think not… – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

Norwegian Fjords tip #32

  • Eat as much food as you can on the ship so that you don’t have to eat in port… Norway is really expensive and I have no interest in paying for food when I have an unlimited supply on the ship! Make sure you eat a big breakfast and you’ll be fine for a while. If you have kids though it may be worth bringing some snacks.

This was my first P&O cruise and I was REALLY impressed with the food and service onboard. If you are cruising onboard Britannia make sure you check out this post. P&O Britannia: 8 free ‘must do’ activities.   Britannia is an amazing ship but she is HUGE and it can be difficult to make the most of your time onboard.

I also filmed a tour video when I was onboard and will be posting daily vlogs in each port.

Cool Cruiser

Hi everyone, we're first time cruisers hoping to go on a Norwegian Fjords cruise on P&O's Iona next July with our two year old daughter. We'd really appreciate some feedback on the cruise's itinerary and whether there are any toddler-friendly excursions we could do on some of the stops.

We know it's unlikely that we can hike to see a glacier etc. with a toddler in tow, but maybe things like the Loen Skylift and/or the Geiranger Skywalk would be possible.

I'll copy the cruise itinerary below. Any feedback/advice would be gratefully received, thank you so much!

6 July - leave Southampton

7 July - at sea

8 July - Stavanger arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon

9 July - Olden arrive in the morning and leave in the early evening

9 July - Innvikfjorden (cruise-by) early evening

9 July - Nordfjord (cruise-by) early evening

10 July - Hellesylt arrive early morning and leave in the afternoon

10 July - Geirangerfjord

10 July - Sunnylvsfjorden (cruise-by)

10 July - Storfjorden (cruise-by)

11 July - Haugesund arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon

12 July - at sea

Hi we actually did a 7 day on Cunard with a. 2 and 6 year old.  It was an amazing cruise, and Geiranger and Olden were two of our favorite ports.

You are traveling in July so you should be able to reach the Geiranger Skywalk (we were there in late may and just missed the opening of the seasonal road.). We visited the rest of the scenic viewpoints in Geiranger, and it was very beautiful and enjoyable for both our kids.  We had booked a private tour for just our family, which didn't work out as well as I had hoped, but we just happened to not get lucky with our driver (the ship delayed us from tendering on time, and although I called the company to notify them of the delay the driver was upset about having to wait and later lied about not being able to take us to one location we requested that the company had told us by email would be fine to visit).  The company, Geiranger Fjordservice, has excellent reviews overall, so I'm sure you would enjoy one of their panoramic bus tours  or if you hire a private driver you might get luckier than we did.   You might want to bring some pills for motion because there is a lot of driving up winding roads.

At the end of the tour, we decided to stop for lunch in Geiranger. We were a little scared to stop at Braserie Posten, since it is in a tourist trap location right near the cruise ship terminal, but the yelp reviews were positive and the food was excellent. There is seating with a beautiful view of the harbor in the back of the restaurant. We went through two bowls of fish soup, since the kids were so happy eating all of it. It is a very short walk from this restaurant to the dock, so this is a nice way to conclude your day in Geiranger.

We were extremely fortunate to learn that the Loen Skylift opened three days prior to our arrival in Olden. I was a bit anxious about the logistics of visiting a brand new attraction with small children, and the owner of Olden Adventures was very patient and reassuring about the logistics of reaching the skylift. As it turned out, the weather was a bit rainy on the day we arrived, so there were very few crowds. It was still a very beautiful location, with a gorgeous viewing platform. On nice days, paragliders take off from the mountain (that happened the day before we arrived) and that must be spectacular to see if you are lucky enough to get good weather. The food in the restaurant was excellent, especially the sample platter of local meat. It’s unsurprisingly expensive, but the view is outstanding and the food delicious.   You can see the view through the beautiful restaurant windows, plus there are beautiful platforms and places to walk around on top of the mountain.  IT was very accessible  for a 2 year old.

The Loen Skylift is only a 6 km bus ride from Olden, so it isn’t very difficult to get there. Olden Adventures ( http://www.oldenadventure.com/ ) is running shuttles to the Loen Skylift, right next to their buses to the Biksdal Glacier so it would be very easy to travel to both attractions through Olden Adventures.

The Briksdal Glacier has been hit hard by global warming, but the 40 minute bus ride there is quite scenic and lovely, as is the hike itself to the glacier so overall this excursion is a very good choice as long as you realize ahead of time that the most beautiful pictures online of the glacier showing lots of ice are not recent and don’t represent what you will see at the glacier.

For travelers with young children or mobility issues, there are troll cars available for rent to reduce the length of your hike. These golf carts travel most of the way to the glacier, leaving you with a very pleasant and relatively flat 700 m walk. Since we didn’t expect my 2 year old to make it all the way to the glacier, my husband and 6 year old went ahead of us. To my surprise, my 2 year old slowly but steadily made the entire hike in the allocated time (they tell you what time to return to the platform to catch your return troll car.  You might want to be smarter than me and ask them if it is possible to schedule more time for the short hike so you aren't racing back to the troll car.  Or you can see if you can use a stroller or babywear- my stroller was hard for me to push but if you are stronger that might be an option for you.  It's over unpaved ground so I personally had a hard time pushing the stroller but more fit families might have absolutely no problem with this). Reservations are required for troll cars in May and October, and recommended during the summer months (the troll car season runs from May-October). The only challenging thing is that they do request that you tell them what time you’d like to ride on the troll car, which is hard if you want to chose a time to do this excursion based upon the weather forecast (although it is completely understandable they ask you to pick a time, since otherwise there might be a lot of people trying to get on a troll car at one time and this would cause really long delays). I don’t know if the troll car operators are always flexible about the time of your reservation, but we changed our minds about what time to visit the glacier on the day we traveled since we wanted to visit the Loen skylift in the afternoon when the weather was scheduled to be better. I emailed the troll car operators at 9 am as soon as we got on the bus towards the glacier, and they had already switched my reservation by the time we arrived at the troll car office. We traveled in May, when things are less crowded so I don’t know if they will be able to accommodate a change in reservation time during the busy summer months. The troll car website where you can make your advance reservation is available at: http://www.oldedalenskysslag.com . or I believe Olden Adventures may now be able to make troll car reservations for you directly.

Near where you pick up the troll car is a small café off the souvenir shop; they have excellent waffles. They are best freshly made, so if you have time keep an eye on the plate where they store the waffles and order them when everyone else bought up the older waffles. My family started off by ordering 4, and ended up eating 12 (the kids really loved them and since they’d just finished hiking to a glacier without a single complaint I wasn’t going to say no), so we were able to get a lot of fresh waffles.

Stavanger - the highlight is Pulpit Rock, but that wasn't an option for our family because we couldn't baby wear  on a hike.  You might be able to and can  consider it.  We visited the petroleum   museum, which was fine but not outstanding, and took a cruise with  Rodne, which was good.

Just one thing to note - Norway doesn't allow taxis to transport children without car seats, so please be mindful of that when trying to arrange tours.  We sailed from Southampton, and flew into London.  In London, when it would get rainy and the kids were tired and hungry we could just hop in a cab, take them for food and cheer them back up (once in London it started to rain and I hailed a cab to travel such a short distance the driver told me "um..I don't want to rip you off.  You can walk there" and I explained I knew we were taking a crazy short ride, but my 2 year old was done walking and we just needed to get him some pizza before he melted down.  You cannot take a cab in Norway without car seats, and most locations are  too small to have much public transportation (we also took a Baltic cruise with a 3 year old and didn't have any transportation issues there) .  So that part was frustrating because we didn't know about it and didn't plan in advance.  Taxi companies are required to provide car seats if you book them in advance, so please just make sure you have backup transportation planned.

As a general rule, private tours are best for families of young children but its a little hard to predict whether or not it will be worth it in Norway - on a cloudy day it would be hard to appreciate the beautiful scenic viewpoints in Geiranger (we really couldn't see much in Bergen due to very poor weather) but on a clear day a private tour or a visit to the expensive Loen Skylit is absolutely worth it, but its hard to know ahead of time.  Hopefully you will get some clear weather but it's a bit of a risk.

Do you have any tender ports on this itinerary?  Should there be any tender port calls, are you aware of the  P and O rules for any tender port if travelling with young children?  Friends travelling with son, daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren  were caught out by a "step test" with the youngest.

That was actually the reason for our delay for getting off the ship in Geiranger on Cunard.  Cunard wouldn't let us carry our two year old across the step test.  After the people running the step test refused to issue a tender ticket, we went to the front desk and after a long debate they finally issued a ticket, but by the time we finally were able to use it it the crowds had died down and no one even checked that we had it.  And then when we went to exit the ship, the Cunard crew did exactly what the Princess crew did - they picked up our 2 year old and handed him over to the sailers on the tender.  I later wrote to Cunard which confirmed a parent should be able to take the step test carrying a 2 year old.  So you might want to write to P&O to confirm their policy ahead of time, so you aren't delayed leaving the ship (if we'd had a group tour we might have had even more problems).

Thank you both so much for your replies and the really useful information.

As a complete newbie to cruises, I'd never heard of tender ports! From a quick search, it doesn't look like any of the ports on our itinerary are tender ports, so hopefully we'll avoid the step test 🙂

It sounds like we'll be able to find a few toddler-friendly excursions on some of the ports, which is great to know. Thanks again!

Sorry, I also just noticed that Iona has two slightly different Norwegian itineraries: one features Stavanger, Olden and Haugesand (with sail-bys in Innvikfjorden, Nordfjord, Sunnylvsfjorden and Storfjroden); the other features Stavanger, Olden, Ålesund and Haugesund (with sail-bys in Nordfjord and Innvikfjorden).

Is one itinerary any better than the other? The second one has fewer sail-bys, but maybe Alesund is a must-see destination?

Geiranger has a sea walk, which means that one ship can avoid the tender, and the other ships tender.

I'm a little confused by your last post - are you comparing these itineraries to the original one?  Do you lose Geiranger, or was that always just a sail-bye?

I've not been to Alesund, but it is much beloved on this forum.

5,000+ Club

I don't think you have all the details for the two Iona itineraries- also problem with spelling. Assuming that Haugesand is Haugesund?

'Sails bys’ are purely to make the itinerary look better - these are the fjords that are sailed through both in and out of a port in the fjords. Innvikfjorden and  No rdfjord are the fjords into Olden and  Sunnylvsfjorden and Storfjorden are the fjords into probably what is a stop in Hellesylt.  Haugesund and Hellesylt are small towns with somewhat limited options. Olden, Ålesund and Stavanger have good opportunities.

Sorry, I should've explained it better.

The first itinerary is the same as the one I mentioned in my original post and it includes Geiranger. I think we're swaying towards that itinerary, as it seems to cover a few of the bigger fjords.

Thank you again for replying!

Apologies about the spelling - I was hastily copying text from the P&O website.

The itinerary we're swaying towards has stops in Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt and Haugesund.

Thank you so much for the very helpful information. It's much appreciated.

The itinerary in post #1 does not stop in Geiranger but Hellesylt.

9 hours ago, hallasm said: The itinerary in post #1 does not stop in Geiranger but Hellesylt.

Do people usually  stay in  Hellesylt. or do they visit Geiranger?  And is Hellesylt part of the heritage fjords that most ships won't be able to  reach after (I think) 2025?

It’s not that easy to go from Hellesylt to Geiranger - there is a 1 hour ferry ride to Geiranger .

The fjords into Hellesylt is not Heritage fjord - only the stretch between Hellesylt and Geiranger (Geirangerfjord) will be affected after 2025.

Thanks - I was just wondering what will happen to the Geiranger Skywalk when the new rules come into effect.  I met the people who own the Loen Skylift when I was there, and I was glad they won't be hurt by the new rules but thought it might be tough on the Geiranger Skywalk if that's also privately owned.

1 hour ago, kitkat343 said: Thanks - I was just wondering what will happen to the Geiranger Skywalk when the new rules come into effect.

Yes, a complete stop for cruise ships in Geiranger and Flåm will cause challenges for many local’s in these areas. The Norwegian Maritime Authorities (NMA) has come up with proposals and ideas to help smooth out the consequences of this mandate. The NMA proposes to use electric tender boats to transport cruise passengers and enables, for example, LNG ships for a transition period. Regardless of when or how these new rules are implemented, the bottom line is that sailing in the Norwegian fjords will look different from 2026.

It is possible that cruise lines will visit other shorter and less popular fjords. Or use of electric excursion boats from, for example, Balestrand to Flåm and from Hellesylt to Geiranger. This could become the new norm and will certainly increase the price of excursions to Flåm and Geiranger.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

And located right in the very center of it all is the namesake of the museum itself, Fram, which is actually the name of a wooden polar ship that was used on three historic expeditions, including Roald Amundsen's voyage to Antarctica. Nicknamed the " world's strongest wooden ship", the Fram has been preserved since the mid-1930s and you'll have an opportunity during your visit to board this intrepid vessel and get a glimpse inside a 19th-century sea vessel including its cabins, lounges, cargo hold and engine room.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Ponant Small Ships have a licensed and registered French physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

Ponant Small Ships  are  registered in France. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

We regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on this cruise. Guests should bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. We also cannot provide you with individual assistance for walking, dining or other personal needs. If you need such assistance, you must be accompanied by an able companion who will assist you.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here.

The southern half of  Norway shares in the climactic benefits of the Gulf Stream. The temperate climate has few extremes of heat or cold. The average high temperatures from May through September range from 55 to 75˚F (13 to 24˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). The lowland area around Oslo in Norway is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. Not only is Bergen the warmest city in Norway, but it is also probably the wettest, averaging approximately 80 in (2,000 mm) per year.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

In the ship's main dining room, slacks and a collared shirt are acceptable for  gentlemen, and for women, slacks/skirt and a blouse are appropriate.  We have found, however, that the international mix of travelers on board tend to dress somewhat more formally than one might expect.  Thus, you may prefer to wear a jacket and tie or a cocktail dress for special evenings like the Captain's welcome and farewell dinners aboard your ship and for the special welcome and farewell dinners at the beginning and end of your journey.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing swimming shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts, tennis shoes or flip-flops.

To add a fun element to your cruise, your Ponant crew will sometimes hold an impromptu "White Party" or "Black & White" Officers 'Evening aboard your ship.  If you'd like to participate (it's purely voluntary), we encourage you to pack a white, smart-casual outfit for the occasion, with possible black accents such as a belt, scarf, etc.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels. Onboard, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels and aboard the ship. For safety reasons, curling and clothes irons are not permitted aboard the ship.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in (Very Important)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Water shoes or sneakers for those who choose to kayak or go on the rib boat
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks (it can be cool and windy)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sport coat for men (with tie suggested for Captain's dinners) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • White or black and white clothing for possible Officers' Evening aboard ship (see above)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  •  Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor. While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed. What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Oceanview vs Verandah Comparison: Navigating Your Perfect Cruise Stateroom

Choosing between an oceanview vs. verandah stateroom can be one of the most exciting – and sometimes daunting – decisions when planning your first time going on a Disney cruise or your tenth. As a seasoned cruiser who’s sailed with my wife and two kids on various lines, I’ve experienced the pros and cons of both room types. Let’s dive into the world of cruise accommodations and explore which option might be best for your next nautical adventure!

Understanding Cruise Ship Stateroom Categories

Before we compare oceanview and verandah staterooms, it’s essential to understand the main categories available on most cruise ships. These categories cater to different preferences and budgets:

  • Inside Cabins: No windows and located within the ship’s interior. These are the most budget-friendly, offering a cozy, no-frills experience.
  • Oceanview Cabins: Feature a window or porthole that allows natural light and a view of the sea. They’re priced higher than inside cabins, offering a comfortable middle ground for those wanting to experience the ocean without stepping outside.
  • Balcony (Verandah) Cabins: Come with a private outdoor space equipped with seating. These are more expensive than oceanview cabins, ideal for those who enjoy spending time outdoors in privacy.
  • Suites: The most luxurious option, suites are the largest cabins available, often featuring premium amenities and exclusive perks. These are often referred to as the “Concierge” level on Disney Cruise Line because they offer a higher level of service and convenience.

These four categories are standard across most major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, and Disney Cruise Line, though specific names, features, and pricing may vary slightly.

Many consider oceanview and verandah staterooms among the best staterooms on a Disney cruise due to their perfect balance of comfort, views, and value. Let’s explore these options further!

Oceanview Staterooms: A Room with a View

An oceanview stateroom with large round porthole window

Key Features:

  • Window or porthole (non-opening)
  • Natural light and sea views
  • Generally less expensive than verandah rooms
  • Typically located on lower and middle decks

Oceanview staterooms offer a glimpse of the outside world through a window or porthole. On Disney Cruise Line ships, these windows are often quite large, especially in the Deluxe Family Oceanview category. Some even feature a padded seating area in the window – perfect for curling up with a book while watching the waves.

Size and Layout

Oceanview rooms are typically similar in size to inside staterooms, though some lines offer larger “deluxe” or “family” oceanview options. Here’s a breakdown of oceanview stateroom sizes on Disney Cruise Line ships:

  • Disney Magic/Wonder : 214 sq ft
  • Disney Dream/Fantasy : 204 sq ft
  • Disney Wish/Destiny/Treasure : 218 sq ft

These rooms usually feature a queen-size bed, a sitting area with a couch (often convertible for additional sleeping space), and a split bathroom design unique to Disney ships.

  • Budget-conscious cruisers who want natural light
  • Families who need more space than an inside room
  • Cruisers prone to seasickness (seeing the horizon helps!)
  • Those who don’t plan to spend much time in their room

Potential Drawbacks:

  • No private outdoor space
  • Limited fresh air (windows don’t open)
  • Some may have obstructed views (always check before booking)

Verandah Staterooms: Your Private Outdoor Oasis

  • Private balcony with seating
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass doors
  • Fresh air and ocean breezes
  • More spacious feel
  • Usually located on higher decks

Verandah staterooms (also called balcony cabins) are a step up from oceanview rooms, offering your own private outdoor space. This can be a game-changer, especially on scenic cruises or warm-weather itineraries.

A Disney Wish Verandah Stateroom

A Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah onboard the Disney Wish

Verandah rooms are often slightly larger than oceanview staterooms, with the added bonus of outdoor space. On Disney ships, verandah staterooms range from about 246 to 299 square feet, including the balcony. The interior layout is similar to oceanview rooms, but with the addition of the balcony access.

  • Cruisers who value private outdoor space
  • Couples looking for romantic moments
  • Families who want extra room to spread out
  • Anyone cruising to scenic destinations (like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords)
  • Those who enjoy dining or relaxing on their balcony
  • More expensive than oceanview rooms
  • Balcony noise can sometimes be an issue
  • Privacy concerns (though most cruise lines have measures to ensure privacy between balconies)

Comparing Across Cruise Lines

While Disney Cruise Line offers great options, it’s worth considering how they compare to other major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and others for your family.

Royal Caribbean

  • Offers “Virtual Balconies” in some inside rooms with floor-to-ceiling HD screens displaying live outside views
  • Unique interior-facing balcony rooms overlooking Central Park or the Promenade on Oasis-class ships
  • “Infinite Verandah” on some newer ships, featuring a floor-to-ceiling window that opens halfway down
  • See our Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean page for a comparison

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • “Studio” oceanview rooms designed for solo travelers on some ships
  • “The Haven” – a ship-within-a-ship concept with premium oceanview and balcony suites
  • Some ships feature “The Waterfront,” a promenade that brings the indoors out with oceanfront dining and bars
  • Review our Disney Cruise Line vs. Norwegian article to compare

Carnival Cruise Line

  • Some oceanview rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Select ships offer “Havana” staterooms with special pool access
  • “Cloud 9 Spa” staterooms (both oceanview and balcony) with special spa perks
  • Read our Disney Cruise Line vs. Carnival Cruise Line comparison for more

MSC Cruises

  • “Yacht Club” suites with exclusive lounge and pool access
  • Some ships feature “Infinite Ocean View” cabins with a panoramic window that slides down to create a balcony-like experience

Factors to Consider When Choosing

When deciding between an oceanview and verandah stateroom, consider the following:

  • Budget: Verandah rooms typically cost more. Is the extra expense worth it for your trip?
  • Itinerary: Will you be cruising somewhere with stunning scenery? A verandah might be more valuable in Alaska than in the Caribbean.
  • Length of cruise: For longer sailings, having private outdoor space can be a nice perk.
  • Time in the room: If you plan to be out and about most of the time, a less expensive oceanview might suffice.
  • Season and weather: A verandah is more enjoyable in warm climates.
  • Ship activities: If the ship has a lot of outdoor spaces and activities, you might not need a private balcony.
  • Personal preferences: Do you value privacy and quiet time? A verandah might be worth the splurge.

For a detailed analysis of the different cabin categories, please refer to our articles on Inside Stateroom vs. Oceanview Stateroom and Deluxe Stateroom vs. Deluxe Family Stateroom .

Our Family’s Experience

Our family has experienced both oceanview and verandah staterooms on various cruises. On our first three-night Disney cruise to the Bahamas, we opted for an oceanview stateroom to save money on shore excursions and other onboard experiences. The large porthole was perfect for our kids to watch sail away and provided plenty of natural light.

For our 7-night Alaska cruise, however, we splurged on a verandah room. It was absolutely worth it to step outside and take in the breathtaking glaciers and wildlife from the privacy of our own balcony. Plus, the extra space was a lifesaver with two energetic kids! That said, the verandah can be surprisingly windy, which isn’t ideal on a “glacier day” when it’s extra cold.

From our experience, when deciding between oceanview vs. verandah staterooms, we’ve found it helpful to consider factors like the itinerary, the length of the cruise, and how much time we plan to spend in our room.

On shorter trips where we’re busy with ship activities, an oceanview stateroom has been more than enough. But for longer voyages or scenic destinations, we’ve found that splurging on a verandah is well worth it for the extra space and private outdoor views.

For example, during themed Disney Cruises like “Halloween on the High Seas,” which our kids absolutely loved, there was so much to do that we barely spent time in our room!

The Bottom Line: Oceanview vs. Verandah

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing between an oceanview and verandah stateroom. Both options have their merits, and the best choice depends on your budget, itinerary, and personal preferences.

If you’re still unsure, consider these final thoughts:

  • Oceanview rooms are a great “middle ground” between inside and verandah staterooms.
  • Verandah rooms offer more flexibility and can enhance your overall cruise experience.
  • Remember to factor in any cruise line promotions—sometimes, you can snag a verandah for close to an oceanview price!
  • Consider splitting the difference on longer cruises by booking a few nights in an oceanview and a few in a verandah.

Remember, no matter which stateroom type you choose, you’re in for a magical experience. From enjoying the delicious Food on Disney Cruises to participating in exciting onboard activities, your cruise vacation will be filled with lasting memories.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway and her husband  Crown Prince Haakon were joined by their children Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus on day two of  Princess Märtha Louise' s three-day wedding with  Durek Verrett .

As the royal family prepared to board the ship for the pre-wedding boat party along the Geiranger Fjord, they stopped to smile for photos and wave to crowds who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the festivities.

Among them was Prince Sverre's rumoured girlfriend, who subtly linked hands with the 18-year-old.

DON'T MISS:

Dressed in a neutral jumper layered underneath a blue jacket and dark trousers, the pretty brunette looked elegant with her long hair styled in loose mermaid waves and secured in a half updo. She sported a shy smile as she stood next to Elvebakken Upper Secondary School graduate Sverre, who looked laid-back in a white T-shirt and blue and green striped shacket.

Mette-Marit and her family are just some of the guests enjoying the boat trip alongside bride-to-be Märtha Louise and her American shaman groom. They travelled from Alesund to Geiranger village along the fjord, a Unesco World Heritage Site famed for its beautiful waters and dramatic surrounding mountains.

Crown Prince Haakon's older sister looked radiant in an ombre purple and hot pink silk blouse, teamed with a black leather midi skirt, a matching jacket and silver cowboy boots.

Meanwhile, Durek opted for a chic chocolate brown ensemble, including a patterned knit and matching trousers.

This marked the second event on the happy couple's itinerary . On Thursday evening, the weekend kicked off with a  pre-wedding drinks reception at Hotel 1904 in Alesund with a "sexy and cool" dress code.

Hotel Union in Geiranger village will host the couple's Friday  evening festivities – a Latin American-themed party. Here's to hoping salsa dancing is on the cards at the four-star hotel, which boasts its own nightclub alongside other luxurious amenities, such as a spa, three restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, and a vintage car museum.

Members of the Norwegian royal family and their 350 guests will gather at the hotel on Saturday 31 August to witness Märtha Louise and Durek's ceremony.

Influential guests taking part in the festivities include Märtha Louise's three daughters Maud, Leah, and Emma, as well as Crown Princess Victoria and her husband, Prince Daniel, Victoria's brother Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia.

Mette-Marit is a mother to three kids; she has a son Marius from a previous relationship before meeting her husband, and she and Haakon went on to welcome Princess Ingrid and Prince Sverre.

With her kids all growing up and flying the nest, the royal – who was  diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 – admitted "I really dread" an empty house.

"It is not just that it is my children who are moving out of the house. So are all the friends. I feel like I've been running a youth hostel for many years now," she said in a translated interview with NRK.

"I will miss the chatter, talking to them, hearing how they are doing. Everyday life with lots of cuddles and chats. So, are we going to sit there alone, Haakon and I, together with the dog and just: 'Yes, what are we going to do now?'" she added.
