How to prepare for the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel bargains

Jordan Waller

For 2023, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday are no longer just stand-alone days of sales; instead they have become more like a month-long frenzy of deals ... if you know where to look.

Whether you have your eye on a sweet rate for a high-end hotel suite, want to save cash on transatlantic airfare, bag a great deal on Brightline tickets or simply snag a good price on a pair of designer sunglasses or luggage, there's something for everyone.

But with so many deals flying around, finding the right one for you can be overwhelming. Here's how to navigate your way through this year's Black Friday deals and maximize your savings.

When is Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday?

travel for friday

As the sales period has evolved, knowing when to grab a bargain can be confusing.

Generally speaking, there are three main days of sales in 2023:

  • Black Friday (Nov. 24)
  • Cyber Monday (Nov. 27)
  • Travel Tuesday (Nov. 28)

Traditionally, Black Friday is best for getting deals in-store; however, each year, we've seen more and more online deals and sales. A worthwhile tip is to check both in-store and online pricing if you can before buying anything.

Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday after Black Friday and is when most companies release deals online. However, it's not uncommon for companies to launch deals even earlier. A good example is Amazon, which will launch its Black Friday sales early on Nov. 17, or Walmart, which began its Black Friday sales on Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, Travel Tuesday is the day after Cyber Monday and is when we see airlines, hotels, cruise operators and other travel companies release flash sales and other deals they haven't already shared.

Here's a run-through of other key Black Friday sale dates to put on your calendar:

What travel deals have we seen on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday?

Not every Black Friday travel deal will be one to drop everything for and book, but there are always noteworthy exceptions.

For example, a few years ago, on Cyber Monday, Expedia offered 90% off of hotels booked through their mobile app.

In previous years JetBlue has offered promo codes for $100 off of flights and up to $400 off of JetBlue Vacations packages. Spirit Airlines has offered one-way flights starting at $20.21. Frontier Airlines has also discounted flights by 99%. Alaska Airlines also ran a $29 fare sale last year.

Many international airlines also offer Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. For instance, Air Canada last year offered up to 30% discount on fares. Likewise, Qatar Airways has participated, offering a 10% discount on newly booked flights. British Airways also often has significant discounts for its travel packages.

Last year we saw savings of up to 40% with Omni Hotels and Resorts, MSC Cruises and Holland America.

While theme parks like Disney don't always participate in Black Friday-specific sales, others do. For example, in 2020, we saw Legoland offer up to 50% off passes, and Universal Orlando also ran a buy-two-get-two-days free deal.

On the hotel front, Fairmont has sold eGift cards at a 20% discount. And those looking to purchase an annual Clear membership have also had chances to save $40 during past Black Friday sales.

How to find Black Friday travel deals and maximize your savings

Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel deals have already started popping up, though the intensity and frequency of the deals will only increase as Thanksgiving approaches.

The best outcome for shopping Black Friday travel deals is when you are able to double or even triple dip your savings. In addition to finding the deal itself, you might also be able to earn extra cash back or bonus points. This applies to merchandise purchases as well.

Here are some top tips for staying ahead of the curve so you can pounce on the best deals as they're released and also make some additional savings.

travel for friday

Follow the right social media accounts and email newsletters

Subscribe to email lists for every airline, hotel brand, car rental company, rail operator and more that you're interested in. As a rule of thumb, if the brand also has a loyalty program, you should sign up for that, too. Special deals are often released to members that aren't accessible to the general public.

For example, if you're interested in deals from Royal Caribbean , JetBlue Airways and Hyatt , be sure you're on their respective email lists.

You should also follow the travel brands you care about on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, as the companies often promote special savings on their accounts.

But don't just stop there. You should also make sure you're signed up for booking sites like Expedia and airfare sites like Skyscanner, which will likely flag drops in prices or special offers that they're running.

TPG will share curated lists of Black Friday deals for cruises , airlines, hotels, travel gear and more, too, so remember to follow the TPG social channels and subscribe to the free TPG daily newsletter .

Set price alerts for dream trips

One additional way to find Black Friday travel deals (at least for airfare) is to let the deals come to you. This may not work for all deals, but setting a price alert for a flight you know you want to take is a great way to get notified of price drops without having to constantly scour the web for savings.

There are some early Black Friday deals already out there, so we recommend getting these tips into action as soon as possible if you want to be able to shop the broadest selection of offers.

Check historical pricing

Just because a Black Friday or Cyber Monday travel deal pops into your email doesn't necessarily mean it is a deal.

It's not unheard of to see some hotels offer promotions that aren't actually cheaper than member rates or ongoing AAA rates. Double-check member rates and any loyalty program savings before you book.

It's wise to think through where you want to go now, then see what the regular prices are for everything from hotels to flights for the destination you are most interested in. This way, you'll be better positioned to judge just how much of a deal something truly is.

Airfare deals can be subject to seasonality and hidden fees, such as charges for checked bags. Use Google Flight's historical pricing feature to understand whether the offered deal is a good saving or whether adding things like checked bags will wipe out any savings.

Finally, sites like Amazon regularly see prices yo-yo throughout the year, and they don't always save their best deals for Black Friday or Prime Day. If you're buying from Amazon, we recommend using a site like Camelcamelcamel.com , which tracks historical shifts in pricing. You can also use the site to set alerts on specific products you want to buy,

Use online shopping portals

Many travel companies are part of an online shopping portal , and if you book through a shopping portal, you can earn something in return, such as extra points, miles or cash back.

To get the most bang for your buck, use a shopping portal aggregator like CashbackMonitor.com or Evreward.com to see which portal has the best return — since payouts can vary from day to day.

travel for friday

You won't find all travel companies on sites like Rakuten, but it's worth looking there, too, especially since many shopping portals will offer an increased payout during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

For example, let's say you are booking a trip with IHG . Often, you'll find that you can earn cash back for stays at select properties by first starting at the Rakuten shopping portal. While rates are typically around 3%, we've seen promotions climb to as much as 20% cash back.

Marriott , Hertz, Hawaiian Airlines , Qatar Airways, Expedia and British Airways are just some of the other travel companies that can be found in these booking portals.

Check your Amex Offers

Amex Offers is one of our favorite ways to save money on purchases, and you can easily save hundreds of dollars each year by applying Amex Offers to bookings.

Travel-related Amex Offers pop up regularly, especially during Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel bookings. Do remember, however, that you must use your targeted American Express credit card when paying after adding the offer to your card to take advantage of these special offers.

travel for friday

If you have multiple American Express credit cards, you'll want to look through all your accounts, as you might see different offers per card.

Also, keep in mind that a purchase must actually go through by the expiration date. So, if you make a hotel reservation at the Grand Hyatt Vail for next March and don't pay when you book, the statement credit won't be triggered.

Use the right credit cards

In addition to paying attention to Amex Offers and similar deals via credit card issuers, it's important to ensure you're always using the best travel credit card possible when finalizing any travel-related reservation. This is so you receive extra perks, such as automatic travel protection or bonus points, for every purchase.

travel for friday

Two of our favorite cards for travel purchases are the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card .

With these cards, you'll earn bonus points for each dollar spent on travel (excluding when you're using the Reserve's $300 travel credit) and receive top-notch travel protection benefits. This will come in handy in case you get sick before a trip and need to cancel, incur a delay while sitting at the airport or need to be evacuated in case of an emergency.

Use the ability to rebook to your advantage

In many situations, you can refund your airline tickets or hotel booking within 24 hours of making your reservation, so it's often best to err on the side of booking first and double-check all the details later if you don't want to miss out. This is especially true for booking sites that offer significantly discounted promotions for only a limited number of reservations.

Even if you aren't in the market for a new trip right now, you may find it possible to save on your trip if you rebook any flights or hotels you've already locked in at a lower Black Friday travel deal price.

With many hotels and airlines offering flexible cancellation policies these days, it is easy to cancel and rebook in some cases if the flight you have already booked goes on sale. Some carriers, such as Southwest Airlines , even allow you to re-price a fare without going through the process of canceling and rebooking your flights.

Don't wait too long

When you find a great deal, particularly with airfare or hotel bookings, you won't want to sleep on them when they happen, as they're often in short supply, so you'll need to be ready to act when they appear.

Know your upcoming availability and travel budget so you can quickly know if a deal works for you. If you need to text eight people and wait for them to talk to their families, check their time-off schedules and ponder the trip, you could easily miss out.

Once those deals are released, you'll need to act within minutes (in some cases) to succeed in booking them, so having a general idea of where you want to go and possible dates you can travel will help make it possible to pull the trigger immediately.

Bottom line

Although Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday deals aren't all live yet, you'll want to start planning now to get the top offers.

For now, start by opting in to the email lists for the travel companies you are most interested in and following them on social media (along with TPG). Keep your eyes peeled for any deals launched ahead of Black Friday itself.

Don't forget to use a credit card that will help you maximize your purchase, and make sure you browse online shopping portals, Amex Offers and similar sites so you can keep as much money in your pocket as possible this holiday season.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and — yes — Travel Tuesday offer great opportunities to save money on gifts, electronics and more. But what about for travel? Are those airfare and hotel deals really deals? Or are they just a marketing opportunity for companies looking to cash in on the buying frenzy?

The answer: both. Deals are out there, but some supposedly great prices are often misleading or exaggerated relative to the deals you can find throughout the year. Then again, some of the best travel deals of the entire year come out on Black Friday (and into the extended holiday deals season which includes Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday).

» Learn more: What to Buy (and Skip) on Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2023

Here are seven ways to avoid getting burned on travel deals this Black Friday:

Let's say you spot a great airfare deal on Cyber Monday. Don’t wait until Travel Tuesday to book it. Even if the sale technically extends through then, someone else might have nabbed the last available seat listed.

If you find a truly unbelievable airfare, book it now. You'll have 24 hours to think it over at no monetary cost because the U.S. Department of Transportation requires that air carriers allow reservations to be canceled within 24 hours of booking without penalty.

Assuming the airfare deal is a price you’d be willing to pay on a flight you want, then lock it in. If airfares drop further on Travel Tuesday, you can cancel that flight (within 24 hours, of course) and rebook the better deal.

Or maybe you got the lowest fare, but after thinking it over, you realize the trip doesn't make sense. As long as you cancel within 24 hours of booking, your plane tickets are refundable and you won't be subject to any cancellation fees.

The only cost to you is the time and energy needed to book and cancel.

Speaking of cancellations, understand your airline or hotel's change and cancellation policy before you book. Many have especially sneaky terms like "no cancellations," so make sure you read the fine print.

After all, a fully refundable $209-a-night hotel room may be a better deal for you than the Black Friday sale on the same room going for $199 where you have to pay upfront and it's non-refundable.

While you can always cancel airfare within 24 hours of booking for a full refund and with no other penalty, refunds are less easy to come for pretty much every other situation (aside from the airline canceling your flight on you ). With most airfares, it's unlikely you'll get a full cash refund, particularly on nonrefundable airline tickets .

As far as hotels go, the rules vary widely. Some hotels let you cancel with a full refund three days before arrival, while others make it a week. Many are moving toward a 30-day deadline. Penalties differ, too. “Fully prepaid” room rates often mean you lose 100% of the cost if you can’t make the trip for any reason, including serious illness. Others charge a one-night penalty.

Search prices now, then search them again in the days leading up to Black Friday. Shoppers looking to buy a gaming console or big-screen TV have a good idea of what the product normally costs. That’s harder for folks shopping for travel. Hotel rates and airfares fluctuate from season to season, and sometimes even daily. Deals pitched as “amazing” or “unbelievable” may be more hype than substance.

NerdWallet has done some of the homework for you by tracking the Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday 2023 deals we believe to be good.

A screenshot from Google Flights

Other tools, like Google Flights, can also help you understand whether prices are below average. With Google Flights, you can find the flight you intend to book, and a graph will appear on the page telling you how prices compare for that flight versus what they had been previously posted for. Google's enormous trove of data also predicts whether fares will likely go if you wait to book.

Speaking of Google Flights, that's just one of the myriad flight tracking tools you should consider using to compare prices.

Google Flights is good, though it's not the only tool to consider. Skyscanner posts helpful information about Black Friday travel offers. Check the “Deals” tabs on travel booking sites like Expedia and Travelocity, as well as on airline and hotel websites. Deal specialists like Travelzoo and Groupon can be useful, too. And Going, formerly known as Scott's Cheap Flight offers both a paid and free service to send deal alerts right to your inbox.

Depending on where you want to go, this could be the time to sign up for an airline or hotel rewards credit card, especially one offering a bonus. Assuming you're doing above-average spending during the holiday season, this could be an excellent time to apply for a travel credit card with a sign-up bonus .

Of course, points and miles aren't the only reason to hold a travel credit card (and perhaps even better, a premium travel credit card ). An excellent travel credit card can give you extra benefits when you're on vacation, such as access to Priority Pass airport lounges . Many also carry less glitzy, but more valuable benefits, such as credit cards that offer travel insurance .

More hotels are tacking on a resort fee on top of their daily rate and claiming it covers things like free daily newspapers, Wi-Fi or pool towels. The average resort fee is $42.41 per night, according to a NerdWallet analysis. NerdWallet looked at more than 100 U.S. hotels with January 2023 check-in dates as part of its 2023 Best-Of Awards to see which hotels have the best and worst fees .

That figure represents nearly 11% of the overall nightly cost. And many hotels don't make that fee upfront when they advertise their low Black Friday or Travel Tuesday deals. What's worse is that a deal for 50% off the room rate typically only applies to the room rate. The resort fee likely won't be discounted.

Read the terms of your hotel booking before you calculate the final cost of that hotel.

Just like how you should calculate resort figures in the final figure, account for taxes too.

When you search for package deals, the price you see could have the tax already included. If you search for hotels separately, you’re more likely to see a pre-tax price. When you’re comparing rates (especially when you’re comparing packages to the cost of booking the flight) of car and hotel separately, note whether the tax is included to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison.

After hours of overindulging on turkey , mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie , the last thing we want to do is muscle our way through Black Friday shopping crowds, so we're easing into it from our couch. And what’s better motivation for booking a quick getaway than spending a few days locked in with family?

Though the Delta variant has left things uncertain, people are still not slowing down on their revenge traveling . In fact, a study conducted by Amex Trendex revealed that 47 percent of respondents are planning to travel for at least one holiday this season. And, because many people are still able to work from home, they have the flexibility to avoid the busiest travel days and extend their trips if they need to. People are so eager to get away from their WFH nooks and everyday life that a new trend called “trip stacking” has been noted by travel experts . What is trip stacking, exactly? It’s when people book multiple trips over the same period of time so that if one destination falls through due to COVID restrictions, they still have a backup booked and ready to go.

So yeah, you’re going to want to check out our roundup of the best Black Friday travel deals you can expect this year. From glamping to group tours to airline miles, there’s something for everyone.

Note: Not all Black Friday travel deals are available for 2021 yet; when unavailable, we have listed the offerings from last year and will update as soon as discounts are announced.

16 Thanksgiving Getaways That Are Calling Your Name

What Types of Travel Deals Will There Be for Black Friday 2021?

While things may not be entirely back to normal, travel restrictions are not nearly as stringent as they were last year—thanks to multiple vaccines available—so if you managed to get a $100 round-trip to Bora Bora in 2020, don’t expect such a deep discount this year. Travel companies, airlines and hotels will of course be offering major discounts for Black Friday, but because demand is super high at the moment, they may not be as generous this year compared to last year.

best black friday travel deals jetblue

The Best Airline Deals

Booking a nice hotel and getting the best deal on a guided tour will be for naught if you end up spending a hefty penny on your flights. That’s why airlines such as JetBlue also give major discounts in honor of Black Friday.

Deal: Last year, JetBlue was not only offering up to $400 off vacation packages but perks included a $1,500 resort credit at the Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton Resort and Spa in Montego Bay, Jamaica or a guaranteed room upgrade at the Barcelo Aruba all-inclusive. Even Santa himself couldn’t drum up a better discount.

2. United Airlines

United Airlines may not have been offering discounts off travel packages in 2020, but they did their part in making sure travelers got some perks.

Deal: Last year, the airline was matching mileage purchases through its MileagePlus program, offering a 30 percent bonus for customers who purchased between 3,000 and 14,000 miles; 60 percent bonus if you bought between 15,000 and 34,000 miles; and a 100 percent bonus for those who bought a 35,000 or more.

3. Alaska Airlines

No, you don’t have to travel to the Last Frontier if you book a trip with Alaska Airlines (although you can if you want to). This major American airline operates a large domestic network, flying to places such as the Pacific Northwest, the West Coast and Hawaii, plus international destinations such as Belize, Canada, Costa Rica and Mexico.

Deal: If you have always fancied a cheap trip to Vegas, perhaps 2020 would have been the year to do it since tickets to the gambling capital from anywhere on the West Coast were as low as $29 one-way. East Coasters were paying a bit more with a trip from New York to San Francisco going for $89. Still, that’s a deep discount considering that same trip costs $270 at the time of this writing.

4. Hawaiian Airlines

Another airline that was offering steep discounts for flyers, Hawaiian Airlines has yet to announce their Black Friday travel deals for 2021 but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a cheap getaway to the Aloha State this year.

Deal: In 2020, flights between Hawaii and the West Coast were as low as $198 round-trip, while flights from the East Coast were starting at $598 round-trip. Of course, nifty travelers could slash that price lower if they opted for flights with connections.

5. Qatar Airways

One of the most easily recognizable airlines, Qatar Airways is known for their A-class planes, impeccable service and killer flight attendant uniforms. That’s why we’ll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground to see if this lush airline will be offering deep discounts again this year.

Deal: Last year Qatar Airways docked 30 percent off airfares.

2,600+ US flights canceled: United, American Airlines resume service after global outage

  • A global IT outage caused delays and cancellations for air passengers around the world.
  • Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems.
  • The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings.

William Sikora III was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Detroit on Friday morning.

“We are stuck at this airport,” he posted in a video on X at 6 a.m., zooming in on blue airport screens showing system errors. “United, Delta, America, all this stuff is down. People are just sitting here. The apps still say our flight’s on time because they can’t update information in the apps.”

Air passengers around the world faced delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a  massive IT outage  that also affected industries ranging from banks to media companies.

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were over 2,600 flights canceled and nearly 9,200 delays as of 5 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

More on the outage: Global tech outage grounds flights, hits banks and media businesses

Megan Brown said Washington Dulles Airport was surprisingly calm, even as the airline industry was in turmoil. She said the airport was less crowded than usual, making for a quicker-than-expected security screening, and passengers seemed understanding about the disruptions.

"We just took the gamble and came here, and hopefully we’ll leave today,” Brown told USA TODAY by phone from Dulles. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Her family's 8:25 a.m. ET flight to San Francisco was delayed, but they were able to take off within a couple of hours. "A cheer just erupted as the gate agent said we are going to start boarding," she said.

Around the world, airports and airlines advised customers to arrive earlier than normal for flights.

Around 9 a.m. Sikora posted another video showing fellow travelers sitting on the floor and standing in the middle of a crowded Philadelphia International Airport terminal.

“Everyone is in the same boat. Just wandering and sitting,” he told USA TODAY.

Issues online: Instagram may be the best social app to get your flight issues fixed. Here's why.

The cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blamed the global tech outage on a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows hosts.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected," Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz posted on X . "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier , the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts."

The aviation sector was hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings. Airlines rely on a closely coordinated schedule often run by air traffic control. Just one delay of a few minutes can throw off a flight schedule for take-offs and landings for an airport and airline for the rest of the day.

"The issue affected many separate systems, such as those used for calculating aircraft weight, checking in customers, and phone systems in our call centers," United Airlines said in a statement. "After pausing all departures overnight, flights resumed on Friday morning and we are working diligently to get our customers to their destinations."

Story continues below.

Are flights still grounded? How long will flight delays last?

"Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues," the FAA said, adding that it's working closely with airlines to resume normal operations.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines and monitor the FAA's website for the latest information.

How to find the reason for flight delay

Customers can ask airlines why their flight is canceled or delayed, but the Department of Transportation confirmed that it considers the delays and cancellations caused by Friday's IT outage to be "controllable" by the airlines. While airlines may say they didn't cause the computer error, it means that the DOT will hold them responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out. Every airline's policy is outlined on the DOT customer service dashboard.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics also tracks causes of delays and cancellations.

Airline waivers

Airlines are doing what they can to provide extra flexibility to those affected by the outage.

  • American issued a waiver for affected travelers covering all of its U.S. hubs.
  • Delta issued a waiver allowing all passengers traveling Friday to rebook their flights.
  • Frontier issued a waiver offering rebooking for travelers whose flights were delayed by more than 3 hours. Customers whose flights were canceled may opt for a refund or credit toward future travel.
  • United issued a waiver for select airports so passengers can make changes if their flights are affected, though a United spokesperson told USA TODAY that nearly all of the airline's flights depart or arrive in one of the airports covered by the waiver.
  • Spirit issued a waiver allowing customers who are booked to fly Friday or Saturday through any airport in its network to change their flights at no additional charge.

What happens if my flight is canceled?

Department of Transportation rules  require all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled for any reason, but customers may be entitled to additional compensation if a cancellation is within the airline's control.

What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is experiencing a long delay, the Transportation Department suggests asking airline staff if they will pay for meals or a hotel room.

The DOT dashboard reflects airlines' official policies, but many carriers handle compensation for delays on a case-by-case basis and may provide vouchers or other benefits in some situations that are not formally covered.

What is considered a significant flight delay?

Each airline defines significant delays differently, but the DOT's dashboard identifies which airlines provide compensation for controllable delays of 3 or more hours.

For instance, all major U.S. carriers are supposed to provide a meal voucher for flights delayed by at least 3 hours for reasons within their control. Additionally, Alaska, JetBlue and Southwest offer credit or a travel voucher when a controllable delay "results in passenger waiting for 3 hours or more from the scheduled departure time," according to the dashboard.

How to file compensation for a delayed flight

Travelers seeking monetary compensation for delayed flights should file a claim with their respective airlines. Passengers seeking other types of compensation, like frequent flyer miles, may be able to request those through the airline's customer service.

Airlines and Passengers Still Struggling, a Day After Global Outage

The widespread tech failure left carriers trying to recover and passengers waiting for relief, with many flights still delayed or canceled.

  • Share full article

Crowds of travelers wait in various lines inside an airport terminal.

By Christine Chung and Derek M. Norman

A day after a tech outage disrupted industries worldwide, airlines are digging themselves out from the fallout of thousands of delayed and canceled flights that have left travelers stranded and searching to find a way home over the weekend.

On Saturday morning, delays and cancellations had ebbed, and both domestic and international airlines said they expected to return to near normal operations. But higher than usual cancellation rates are still likely throughout the day, as airlines continue to maneuver planes and their flight crews back into position.

Yesterday’s software outages immobilized airlines , affecting numerous functions, including calculating aircraft weight, checking in and communicating with travelers. The waits stacked up for passengers, and some were left with no option other than to sleep at airports.

Grace Aldrin, 23, said she slept on the floor by baggage claim at La Guardia Airport in New York on Friday night after her United flight to Chicago was delayed overnight. She opened her suitcase and slept on top of her clothes, surrounded by others doing the same.

“They didn’t offer any hotel vouchers — they just told us that we could upload our hotel receipts to United Cares and maybe get a refund,” she said. “I called every hotel I could, and they were all booked.”

At 4 a.m., security officers woke her up, and she trudged back into the terminal, where she eventually got on a standby flight.

Delta Air Lines said in a statement on Saturday that more than 600 of its flights — mostly those departing in the morning and early afternoon — had been canceled, and that passengers could expect additional cancellations as the day progressed. The airline has 4,185 scheduled flights today, 13 percent of which have already been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm. That cancellation rate is far higher than normal.

The weekend, when there are generally several thousand fewer flights in the United States than compared with weekdays, gives airlines a bit more room to recover, said Michael McCormick, a former Federal Aviation Administration control tower operator and an assistant professor of aviation science at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“From a system perspective, today is running well,” he added. “For passengers, not so much.”

Worldwide, there are around 104,000 flights scheduled today. As of the morning, more than 1,800 of these — or about 1.8 percent — had been canceled, according to Cirium. In the U.S., there are some 24,000 scheduled flights. By noon, delays and cancellations had ticked up at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta’s largest hub, where the average delay exceeded an hour and a half, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration .

Several carriers, including Delta , United Airlines and Spirit Airlines , still have waivers in effect today allowing passengers to rebook flights without any additional fees. However, passengers said these had not made a dent in easing their journeys. Yesterday, airline apps crashed intermittently, phone and chat services were mired in hourslong waits, and hundreds of people waited in lines to speak with gate agents. Today, passengers are hoping their rebooked or delayed flights actually take off.

Andrew Gallagher, a 52-year-old traveling with his partner for “the trip of a lifetime” to several European cities, including a jaunt on the Orient Express, was supposed to be on a United flight to Amsterdam departing from Newark yesterday. There was no alert or notification that the flight was canceled. Then, he said the airline made no attempt to find him an alternative flight, despite his efforts to reach them by phone and by chat through its website. The only notification he said he received from them was that his pre-ordered meal was canceled. He is now booked on a Saturday evening flight to Brussels.

Many travelers also reported that gate agents were not offering any compensation — for accommodations, transport or meals — or instruction in how to receive it — despite the Transportation Department’s direction that airlines provide assistance to travelers with lengthy delays and cancellations related to the outages.

Patrick Flanagan, a 39-year-old cybersecurity worker from Richmond, Va., and his wife were wrapping up their Las Vegas vacation when the outage upended air travel Friday morning. They had already checked their bags and boarded their plane, which was scheduled to depart at about 6 a.m., and waited for roughly two hours on the tarmac before they were told to deplane.

Mr. Flanagan said he spent about 12 hours at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Friday, mostly at the Delta counter trying to retrieve his and his wife’s luggage.

At the airport, there were crowds of people at every counter, unsure of how to rebook their flights or get their bags back. “There were probably hundreds of people in every single line to talk to anybody in a Delta uniform,” he said.

“We still don’t have our bags,” Mr. Flanagan said on Saturday morning, from his hotel room in Las Vegas, where he and his wife are staying until they fly out on their rebooked flight on Sunday. “We’re stuck in the clothes that we were wearing to the airport.”

But he did get a $12 meal voucher, he said.

Airport tech outage: Were you stuck in a NY airport? You may be eligible for a refund

Portrait of Emily Barnes

After a technology outage disrupted the operations of major airlines Friday, you may be wondering if you'll be able to get any refunds for a canceled or heavily delayed flight.

The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport saw 33% of their flights delayed or canceled by 10 a.m. Friday and varying cancellations and delays rippled throughout the state's airports, including the closure of LaGuardia from midnight to around 6 a.m.

Here's what to know about any flight-related refunds you may be eligible for.

What does travel insurance cover?

Canceled flights delaying your trip for at least 3-12 hours are typically covered by comprehensive travel insurance, Progressive said . And if your flight is delayed more than 12 hours, you may qualify for trip cancellation coverage, depending on your plan.

If your flight is delayed or canceled for a covered reason and not rebooked in a certain amount of time, you can file a claim through your insurer.

You also may qualify for reimbursements for some or all of these costs caused by your delayed flight, including:

  • Extra accommodation and food costs
  • Missed pre-paid trip events
  • Added costs for meeting up with your cruise or travel group

And, according to Progressive, federal law requires airlines to reimburse you if they cancel a flight or delay it for a certain amount of time and you choose not to travel. If the delay or cancellation qualifies, file a refund request through the airline.

Which airlines are offering refunds?

Many airlines are back up and running after Friday's difficulties but most haven't given clear answers when it comes to if or how they're working to alleviate customers' troubles.

Delta Airlines

Delta issued a travel waiver for all customers who booked flights departing Friday, allowing them to manage their travel changes via delta.com and the FlyDelta app.

The fare difference will be waived if your rebooked travel occurs on or before Wednesday, July 24 in the same cabin of service as you had originally booked.

American Airlines

Customers whose travel plans were affected by the outage were offered a chance to rebook without fees, cancel or receive a refund, according to the airline , but American Airlines hasn't confirmed whether the offer still exists or has since been ended.

JetBlue did not respond to a request for the airline's reimbursement options offered in the wake of Friday's outage.

United Airlines

When asked whether any type of refund was available for their affected customers, United did not provide an answer, only that the airline is working to return customers' bags to them, which includes help from FedEx.
