• Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum) - Mumbai's biggest and best museum displays a mix of exhibits from all over India.
• Colaba - The tip of Mumbai's peninsula is one of the oldest parts of the city, home to the majestic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Gateway of India, and the Colaba Causeway, the city's main commercial drag.
• Fort and Marine Drive - Netaji Subhash Chandra Marg, better known as Marine Drive, is Mumbai's seaside prom, an eightlane highway with a wide pavement. From the winding lanes of quaint Kala Ghoda (a tiny enclave within the Fort District) to the long promenade of Marine Drive, this neighborhood provides a good wander, and the best seafood in town. Many famous landmarks are located here: Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, Asiatic Society, Horniman Circle Gardens, St. Thomas' Cathedral

• Elephanta Island - Just a short ferry ride from South Mumbai lie the ancient caves of Elephanta: a historic getaway from the ultramodern city. Catch a boat across Mumbai harbour to see one of ancient India's most wonderful rock-cut Shiva temples.
• Juhu, Bandra, and the Western Suburbs. The neighborhoods along the northwestern side of the peninsula and on the suburban train line are growing fast. Juhu, probably the northernmost suburb tourists are likely to visit, offers a number of nice hotels, and Juhu Beach—great for a sunset walk. Bandra is home to Bollywood's studios, and where most of India's biggest celebrities live. Other suburbs have restaurants that make a visit worthwhile.
• Aurangabad and the Caves - Aurangabad, about 400 km (250 miles) east of Mumbai, is a base for exploring the astounding cave temples of Ellora and Ajanta.
• Taj Mahal Palace and Tower - This sumptuous hotel is a fairytale blend of Islamic and Renaissance styles.
• Chhatrapati Shivaji Victoria Terminus (CST or VT) - A fantastically eccentric pile, and the greatest railway station ever built by the British. Officially renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in 1998, it's still better known locally as VT.
• Haji Ali Dargah - This exquisite Indo-Islamic shrine is one of Mumbai's most striking symbols.

What are some interesting facts about Mumbai?

West of Fort, hugging the Asiatic Sea, is the popular promenade Marine Drive, which terminates at Chowpatty Beach and Malabar Hill. These are the focal nodes for tourists, who, unlike the locals, often refer to the area as downtown. In fact, locals say they are going uptown, or 'into town,' by which they mean they are going toward South Mumbai, the area stretching south from Mahim Creek to Colaba. South Mumbai is where most tourists choose to base themselves. It is the historic heart of the city, with attractions like the Gateway of India and the Prince of Wales Museum, and the widest selection of restaurants and accommodations options. The South Mumbai neighborhoods are described in detail below, but to see where most locals live, including the jet-set stars, it may be worth taking a trip into one of the suburbs. Of these, the most interesting option (and a good alternative to South Mumbai if you're just staying over 1 night—it's a great deal closer to the airport) is Juhu Beach.

Orientation - Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is an island connected by bridges to the mainland. The city's commercial and cultural centre is at the southern, claw-shaped end of the island known as South Mumbai. The southernmost peninsula is Colaba, traditionally the travellers' nerve centre, with many of the major attractions, and directly north of Colaba is the busy commercial area known as Fort, where the British fort once stood. It's bordered on the west by a series of interconnected, fenced grassy areas known as maidans (pronounced may- dahns). Though just as essential a part of the city as South Mumbai, the area north of here is collectively known as 'the suburbs'. The airport and many of Mumbai's best restaurants, shopping and nightspots are here, particularly in the upmarket suburbs of Bandra, Juhu and increasingly, Lower Parel.

Mumbai's most recognized monument, the Gateway of India, was constructed in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city. Elephanta Caves

Whenever I am around the Fort area, I never fail to look at all the statues that have been sitting there for years, they all have a story to tell. The stories of how Bombay has transitioned, the stories of our freedom fighters, the stories of our ancestors. I don’t think we need movies or any TV Show to tell us how Mumbai has changed. A stroll through the streets of Mumbai will give you the raw picture. This city holds many tales be it the pouring rains, the dreadful terrorist attacks, the fight to win back Mumbai and the list goes on! The old historic monuments are the pride of the city and we are here to pay a tribute to these majestic places.

1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was originally named as Victoria Terminus under the rule of Queen Victoria. Now, I also recently got to know that CSMT Railway station was originally build to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, it had been 15 years of her rule, and to mark that occasion this majestic site was built in the year 1887. In the year 1996, the name was changed to (CST) Chhatrapati Maharaj Terminus to honour Shivaji! CSMT is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, aren’t we all proud mama bears now? It is now one of the prime railway stations that connect the city to every possible corner.

2. Gateway Of India

Gateway of India is one of the majestic places which not only has beautiful architecture but also holds great historical importance. Do you see the sea behind Gateway, it is a fishing area for Mumbaikars and before this monument was built. Gateway was originally build to commemorate the visit of the King of the United Kingdom but the construction didn’t start until 1915. After it was built completely, Gateway was used as a landing site by the Emperors who traveled by seaways to Mumbai. 3. Elephanta Caves

Elephanta caves are a little on the outside of the city, you can take a ferry boat from Gateway to reach Elephanta Caves. The caves has a beautifully carved sculpture of Hindu gods and goddesses, and these were carved back in the medieval times. There are 5 humongous caves with Hindu gods and the other two have sculptures from Buddhist deities. You will find a lot of monkeys on the top hanging from tall trees. The entire place is surrounded by greenery and the view from the top of the caves is of the entire city. Even though it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Elephanta caves have defaced artwork and sculptures. It is one of the majestic and historic places in Mumbai.

4. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves are located in Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali and are majestic as they are a culmination of 109 caves. Like, Elephanta they also have sculptures of deities and most of them are influenced by the Buddhist culture. This is one of the places where you can go for a day out with family or friends, this place is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city. 5. Taj Palace, Mumbai

7. Film City, Goregaon

9. Mani Bhavan

This was the residence of Mahatma Gandhi for a brief period of time and it is situated in Gamdevi, Mumbai. Mani Bhavan was Gandhi’s Mumbai headquarters for about 17 years, from 1917 to 1934. It was not his personal residence and was hosted by his friend Revashankar Jagjeevan. The place is now preserved and all of Mahatma’s things like Charkha and his books. 10. Taraporewala Aquarium

I visited Taraporewala as a kid and was stunned looking at the marine life and also the architecture from the inside as well as outside. It was built in the year 1951 and is one of the prime attractions of Mumbai.

The aquarium was recently renovated and it is currently a 12-feet long and 180-degree acrylic glass tunnel. They have over 2000 fishes of over 400 species. It is located right alongside Marine Drive and can be looked at the best location to spend time with family.

11. Siddhivinayak Temple

Siddhivinayaka Temple in Dadar is also known as the richest temple and it is also one of the oldest temples in Mumbai. The temple is a six-storeyed structure with a golden dome on the top. Here, people from all over the world come and visit, a lot of Bollywood celebrities can be seen here as during festivals and hence it is the most crowded and busiest temple. You will find a big queue on most days, but the best time to visit Siddhivinayak will be when there are no festivals around the corner.

12. Mount Mary Church, Bandra

Mount Mary Church in Bandra is a very iconic location and should be on your list for places to visit in Mumbai. Built-in the year 1721, the church is over 100 years old. They believe praying with a true heart, makes your wishes come true. A lot of people believe in the church and come here to regularly visit it. If not for praying, you can at least come here to appreciate the beauty of the church. With Roman architecture, the church stands out in stark contrast in the bylanes of Bandra. 13. Rajabai Clock Tower

The majestic Rajabai Tower is located in Fort area of Mumbai and the tower is a part of World Heritage Sites 2018. The tower is a blend of Venetian and Goth architecture styles making it look like one of the spectacular towers in Mumbai. The tower was built by an English architect George Gilbert Scoot and it is similar to the Big Ben in London. In the initial years, the tower was the tallest structures in the city, but later it was taken over by other buildings. Premchand Roy had funded the entire tower and hence it is named after his mother Rajabai.

14. Marine Drive

Queen’s Necklace or Marine Drive is definitely one of the best places to visit in Mumbai. Marine Drive is a 3.6-kilometre stretch that runs parallel to the Arabian sea. This long boulevard is the heart of the city. Marine Drive is popularly known as ‘Queen’s Necklace’ because in the night if you view it from a distance or from an elevated place, it looks like a necklace! Interestingly, Marine Drive was a result of a failed reclamation project and is over 100 years old. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mumbai.

15. Bandra Worli Sea Link

The very first sea link bridge in Mumbai that connects Bandra which falls in the Western Suburbs to Worli which is in South of the city. The height of this bridge is 413 feet and it is 66 feet long and is it is an architectural marvel. This majestic bridge is adored by Mumbaikars, it is one of a kind in the city. One of the astonishing things is that the construction of this bridge started in the year 2000 and ended in the year 2010 in the month of March. OF INTEREST : Mumbai has 2 North-South Local Railway Line. These are the Central Line, which starts from Victoria Terminus (VT) and the Western Line which starts from Churchgate Station. Churchgate station is one of the busiest railway stations in the world. To see a mass of humanity, enter the station during rush hour (9:00 am to 10:30 am or 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm).

Start the tour on the Southern exit of Churchgate. On the left is a beautiful neo classical British era building which is the “Western Railway Headquarter”. Opposite the road is the Life Insurance Building and Eros cinema. To the left of Eros is a wide open Oval shaped green ground that is surrounded by trees, called “Oval”.

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 400 meters. Turn right from Churchgate and walk towards the Arabian Sea.

OF INTEREST : Stunning view of the Arabian Sea. On a clear day the view of the sea and the broad promenade of Marine Drive is breath taking. From end to end, Marine Drive is shaped like a necklace and it is also called the “ Queen’s Necklace ”. At the Southern Tip of Marine Drive is the business district of Nariman Point and at the Northern end are the golden sandy beach of Chowpatty and the wooded area of the Governor’s residence. OF INTEREST : Nariman Point is a business district of Mumbai which has been built on reclaimed land in the late 1970s. Since most of the offices are over 30 years old, the architecture is not adventurous. At one time, Nariman Point was among the top 3 most expensive real estate in the world. Nariman Point has many banks, finance companies, brokers, ad agencies, shipping firms, etc.

The tip of Nariman Point offers a beautiful wide view of the Arabian Sea. On the south side is the posh locality of Cuffe Parade. To the left one can see a small fisherman village called “ Machimar Nagar ”. At the tip of Nariman Point is the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) and the Oberoi and Trident hotels. The round Maharashtra legislature building (Vidhan Bhavan) is also located in Nariman Point. It contains a large statue of the symbol of India which are 4 lions facing in 4 direction.

Walk along the tree lined streets of Nariman Point and feel the buzz and energy of the Indian economy.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT : From outside Churchgate station there is a direct bus service to Nariman Point (Special 9). There are also share-a-taxi services from outside Churchgate.

LANDMARKS : Gateway of India, Regal Cinema, Prince of Wales Museum (renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya), National Gallery of Modern Art, Taj Mahal Hotel

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 2 Km. Walk away from the sea on the Madame Cama Road to reach Regal cinema round-about.

OF INTEREST : As one walks along Madame Cama Road, the large Oval ground and imposing Mumbai University building is on the left and Cooperage ground is on the right. At the Regal round-about is the imposing Prince of Wales Museum (now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya). The museum was built in 1922 and houses around 50,000 artifacts and is a good example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Opposite the museum is an impressive building with a large dome which is Mumbai’s National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). NGMA has works of many of India’s greatest contemporary artists including M F Hussain, Jatin Das, Jahangir Sabavala, Tyeb Mehta, S H Raza, F N Souza, etc. These may not be the artist’s greatest works, but it is a good introduction to modern Indian art. The gallery itself is an interesting 3 story structure with a large dome on top. Across the road is Regal cinema which was built in 1933. Across the road to its left is the impressive headquarters of Mumbai Police.

The most important monument in this area is the Gateway of India. The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay. This high arch structure is 26 meter/85 feet tall, built of yellow basalt and is influenced by Muslim and Indian architecture. There are ferry boats along the Gateway of India which talk tourist for a short ride in the Arabian Sea. There are also ferries that take tourist to the island of the Elephanta Caves which contain Buddhist Cave carvings.

Opposite the Gateway of India is the Taj Mahal Hotel (old and new buildings). Visit the elegant old Taj Mahal building and enter a world of old-world charm and luxury. The Taj Mahal has hosted many world leaders. It was attacked and damaged during the 26 November, 2008 Mumbai terrorist strike.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT : Buses are available from Madame Cama Road to Regal or take a taxi (fare less than Rs 30). Special Bus SPL 1 from Nariman Point to Regal.

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 2 Km. From the Gateway of India walk along the sea promenade (Appolo Bandar) to Radio Club and take a right turn to Colaba Causeway. From Colaba take a right turn to walk back to Regal.

OF INTEREST : Colaba has many small hotels and guest houses and is a favorite destination for tourists and backpackers. The main Colaba causeway is a shopping area and it has hawkers lining the pavement selling Indian handicrafts. For Indian handicraft products and souvenirs visit “Cottage Industries Exposition” and “Apsara International” on Colaba Causeway. Since there are many foreign tourists here, there are also many small restaurants that cater to tourist. Expect to find Indian, Moghlai, Iranian, Parsi, Lebanese, Continental, British, Chinese, Japanese food in Colaba. Have a cold beer at Café Leopold and Café Mondegar. Café Leopold was attacked during the November 26 terrorist attacks and there are bullet marks at the bar.

Walk behind the Taj in the evenings and you can smell the mouth watering aroma of kebabs being cooked on coal at “Bade Miya”. This road side restaurant has become a Mumbai institution and so has the small Middle Eastern restaurant of “Bagdhadi” next to it.

Colaba has a large gated colony for only Parsi/Zorastrian residents called Cusrow Bagh. There are an estimated 100,000 Parsis in the world of which 60,000 to 70,000 live in Mumbai. This small, prosperous community came to India from Persia/Iran almost 1,200 years ago. Famous Parsis include the Tatas, Godrej, Shapoorji Palonji, Wadia, Freddy Mercury, Zubin Mehta, Homi Bhabha, Sam Manekshaw, Shiamak Davar, Boman Irani, Rohinton Mistry, Dadabhai Naoroji, Soli Sorabjee, Fali Nariman, etc.

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 1.2 km. Walk North from Regal. Turn left at Kala Ghoda and walk North along Oval until main road (Veer Nariman Road).

OF INTEREST : North of Regal is one of Mumbai’s oldest art galleries, Jehangir Art Gallery. This area is called Kala Ghoda, and along with Colaba, it is the art gallery district of Mumbai. Do visit the galleries in this area to get a flavor of Indian art.

Every year in February, Kala Ghoda is the venue of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival which is Mumbai’s largest street festival, which has plays, movies, paintings, visual art, street art, street performances, children’s workshops, literary events, book readings, literary discussions, concerts, etc.

Just opposite Jehangir Gallery are three amazing Britesh era buildings – Elphinstone College, David Sassoon Library and Army and Navy Building.

From Kala Ghoda, turn left to “Oval Maidan” which is a large open Oval shaped ground. Along the Oval are two large Gothic structures. The first is the Mumbai University which has a large clock tower, called Rajabai Tower. Rajabai Tower is modeled on the Big Ben in London. Notice the beautiful stained glass windows in Rajabai Tower and the lovely spiral staircases of the university building.

Next to the University is the Gothic structure of the Bombay High Court.

7] FLORA FOUNTAIN, FORT, HORNIMAN CIRCLE, TOWN HALL, RBI

LANDMARKS : Flora Fountain, Jai Maharashtra, Oriental Building, HDFC Building, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Bombay House (HQ of Tata Group), Horniman Circle Garden, St Thomas Cathedral, Town Halll (also called “Asiatic Library”), Reserve Bank Of India (RBI), Government Mint,

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 1.5 km. From the Bombay High Court turn right to Flora Fountain.

OF INTEREST : The primary attraction of this place is the beautiful British era architecture which is mainly of the neo–Gothic and Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Fort (also called Flora Fountain because of the statue in the center, and Hutatma Chowk) is the center of activity in South Mumbai with roads from the two main stations (VT/CST and Churchgate) converging here.

In the middle of the road are two statues – one of a girl in a fountain (Flora Fountain after the Roman Goddess of flowers, “Flora”) and the other of a Martyr with a flame (“ Hutatma Chowk ” memorial). All around are building that pre-date to British rule. There is an old world charm to this place. Among the stunning buildings around Flora Fountain are the Oriental Building, HSBC Building, Central Telegraph Office, Bombay House, St Thomas Cathedral.

Flora Fountain and most places in a radius of 1.6 km (1 mile) around it is a business district. There is a hustle and bustle about this place on a regular working day. Feel the excitement and pace of Mumbai and watch Mumbai residents rush about their work.

Look to the south and you will notice a tall cream building in the shape of a semi-arc. This is the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which is the oldest stock exchange in Asia.

Walking along the path shown in the map, you will reach Horminan Circle which has a charming park in its center. The arched Italian Gothic buildings on opposite sides of Horniman Circle remind one of similar buildings in London and Edinburgh. Observe the interesting statues on each arch. Near the circle is the St Thomas Cathedral. Step inside to escape the heat and be stunned by the exquisite statues and plaques in this incredible church. On the other side of the Horminan Circle are steps that lead up to the Asiatic Library (“Town Hall”). Hindi movie fans are sure to recognize this building from many Hindi films. Horniman Circle is the location of the first Starbucks store in India.

North of the Asiatic Library is the impressive building of the Reserve Bank Of India (RBI). With its massive doors, this imposing building does look like a secure bank. Opposite the RBI is a tall white building which is the new RBI building and the compound of the Indian Mint where Indian coins are made and gold is purified.

East of this area is “Ballard Estate” which has some of the most beautiful old British era office buildings in Bombay. This is an office area and it gets deserted at night. Since the streets are empty at night, which is an oddity for Mumbai, film units like to shoot here at night. Hindi movie buff may recall movies which feature Ballard Pier. Beyond Ballard Pier are the docks. Most of the Eastern sea coast of Mumbai is docks. Mumbai has a natural sea port. Some of the docks are naval defense docks. Entry to the docks is restricted.

8]  HERITAGE MILE, P M ROAD, D N ROAD

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 1.2 Km

OF INTEREST : Mumbai’s “ Heritage Mile ” starts from Flora Fountain (Fort), moves along Dadabhai Naoroji Road (D N Road, formerly known as Hornby Road) to Victoria Terminus Station (also called Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus) and ends at Mumbai’s busiest wholesale market, Crawford Market. The “ Heritage Mile ” is a beautiful showcase of British era architecture. The “Heritage Mile Association” is a citizen’s association whose objective is to promote regeneration of the area and restore the heritage character of D N Road.

Pherozeshah Mehta Road (P M Road) and D N Road (Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road) are busy commercial districts of Mumbai. Explore British colonial facades in this 19 th century road. The buildings of note on D N Road are Vatcha Agiary, which is a Parsi fire temple with Assyrian statues and architecture (Note: Non-Parsis are not allowed in the Agiary); J.N.Petit Public Library; Eruchshaw Building.

The architecture of buildings in South Bombay has strong influence of “British Gothic”, “Victorian”, “Indo-Saracenic” (Mughal and Indian influence) and “Art Deco” styles of architecture.

Some of these buildings may seem decrepit; this is because these buildings are labeled as heritage structures and they require special permissions for renovation work. Also, Bombay has an antiquated rent act which has not allowed old landlords to increase rent in the last 30-40 years. Some of the offices in these buildings pay a paltry rent of Rs 100-200 per month ($4-6 or GBP 2-3).

There are small street vendors on both sides of the road trying to entice visitors to buy the latest pirated movie, software and playstation games. Many of these street vendors also sell electronic items which should be avoided. Opposite the Citibank branch is a slightly run down looking shop that stretches across an entire building. This is the Khadi Gram Udyog Bhavan which sells “Khadi” (hand woven cloth popularized by Mahatma Gandhi) and Indian handicraft made by Indian artisans. This is a good place to buy an authentic Indian souvenir. “Bombay Store” on Pherozeshah Mehta Road also has authentic Indian handicraft souvenirs.

9] VICTORIA TERMINUS (VT or CST), BMC HEADQUARTERS

LANDMARKS : Victoria Terminus Station (VT), Bombay Muncipal Corporation (BMC) Headquarters, General Post Office (GPO), Azad Maidan, Times of India Building,

OF INTEREST : The majestic Victoria Terminus Station (VT) (also called Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus – CST) is the MOST STUNNING building in Mumbai . Victoria Terminus is an UNESCO World Heritage Site which was built in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

British architect Frederick William Stevens designed the Victorian Gothic styled VT station which also has Indian architecture influences. The main VT building is a “C” shaped structure with a courtyard in the center. At the center of VT is a massive octagonal ribbed dome which is built without centering. The dome is topped by a statue of a woman, symbolizing “Progress” with a torch in her right hand and a wheel in her left hand. At the eight corners of the dome are gargoyles ready to leap out. VT has beautiful arches, spires, stained glass and windows. All around the outside of the station are interesting and intricate statues, carvings, metal work and sculptures. At the main gate is a statue of a lion (representing Britain) and a tiger (representing India).

VT/CST station caters to both local and outstation trains. This is among the busiest stations in India and the world.

Opposite the VT station is the second most beautiful building in Mumbai, the headquarters of Mumbai’s Municipal Corporation (BMC – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). This is another Gothic masterpiece designed by British architect Frederick William Stevens. This is a V Shaped structure with a tall tower covered with a central dome. There is a winged statue which represents ‘Urbs prima in Indis’ (the first city of India). At the entrance of the building is an impressive bronze statue of Sir Pherozshah Mehta who was a renowned lawyer, municipal commissioner of Bombay and 4 time president of Bombay municipality. Just like the CST, the BMC HQ has stunning and intricate carvings, statues, sculptures, arches, stain glass, windows and domes.

Behind the BMC HQ is the office of one of India’s oldest (founded 1838) newspaper, The Times of India.

Opposite VT and to the left of the BMC HQ is a large playground with cricket pitches on it. This is the famous Azad Maidan where Mumbaikars play India’s favorite game of cricket. There is one exclusive patch of green which belongs to Bombay Gymkhana club which is among the oldest gymkhana/clubs in Mumbai. In addition to a game of cricket one may also see a game of rugby being played here.

Just behind VT Station is the General Post Office (GPO). Step inside its cool interiors where a large round structure with multiple windows dispenses Indian postal paraphernalia.

LANDMARKS : JJ Flyover, JJ School of Arts, Mahatma Phule Market/Crawford Market, Mangaldas Market, Jama Masjid, Mumbadevi Temple, Police Headquarters.

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 0.8 Km from VT station

OF INTEREST : Crawford Market is Mumbai’s main wholesale market. It’s a terrific place to get a bargain. Expect narrow lanes, large crowds, noise, dirt, street shops, hawkers, pollution and above all great bargains. In short, have a great Indian bazaar experience. Different streets specialize in different goods (for example, toys, hardware, stationary, decorative items, paints, electrical items, cloth, machinery, etc).

Near Crawford market is the Mumbadevi temple whose main deity, “ Mumbadevi ”, is the patron Goddess of Mumbai. The word Mumbai is derived from her name.

On the corner of Crawford Market is the JJ School of Arts, which is Mumbai premier art institute.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT : Lots of buses from D N Road

LANDMARKS : Metro cinema, Kayani restaurant, St Xaviers College, Azad Maidan (ground), Cross Maidan (ground), Fashion street, Bhika Behram Well

DISTANCE & DIRECTIONS : 2 Km. Walk west from Crawford Market.

OF INTEREST : From Crawford market, walk west along the Lokmanya Tilak Road to Metro cinema. At the junction of Metro visit “Kayani” restaurant which is a typical “Irani” restaurant. Notice the quaint decor and the interesting menu. From Metro, turn south to the Mahatma Gandhi Road (M G Road). This shaded road with large trees on both sides is also called “Fashion Street” because of a large number of street stalls that sell clothes. On the left hand side of M G Road is Azad Maidan (Ground), Bombay Gymkhana and on the right hand side is the Cross Maidan. Many of Mumbai’s cricketers have honed their skills on these grounds.

At the junction where M G Road meets Veer Nariman Road (via Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil Marg) is the Bhika Behram Well which is a Heritage 1 Parsi holy well. Only members of the Parsi and Irani community can enter this complex.

Walk west along Veer Nariman Road to reach Churchgate station from where this adventure started.

OTHER TOURIST SITES – MALABAR HILL, CHOWPATTY, BANGANGA

Other tourist sites in South Bombay include the sandy beaches of Chowpatty, the posh locality of Malabar Hills where the Hanging gardens are situated which give a panoramic view of South Mumbai and the holy water pond of Banganga at the tip of Walkeshwar. South Mumbai also has interesting places like Haji Ali, Mahalaxmi Temple, Babulnath Temple, Race Course, Dhobhi Ghat, etc.

NOTE : In this article, the walking tour itinerary starts and ends at Churchgate; but one can start the tour from any of the points mentioned in the article. All along the route public transport in the form of BEST buses (Red single and double-decker buses) and Taxis (Black and Yellow) are easily available. Public transport in Mumbai is incredibly cheap. So if you do not feel like walking, hop onto a bus. Most of the route mentioned is covered by Special Bus SPL 1 and SPL 2 (Churchgate to Nariman Point to Regal to VT Station to Churchgate). Mumbai Darshan Places

Mumbai Darshan bus services are available throughout the week. As the ride revolves around  Mumbai city , it starts quite early in the morning. Bus rides usually start at around 07:00 AM and are available till 09:00 AM. On average, the ride takes around 12-14 hours to complete and takes the visitors through some of the most important tourist places in the city.

Pickup Points:

For sightseeing, pickup points are scattered throughout various corners of the city. Be it the central, eastern, western or any other parts of Mumbai, you can always have a pickup point close to your stay.

Here are some of the important pickup points: Andheri, Bandra, Bhandup, Bhayandar, Borivali, CBD Belapur, Chembur, Dadar, Dhaisar, Ghatkopar, Goregaon, Jogeshwari, Kalamboli, Kalwa, Kamothe, Kandivali, Kanjurmarg, Kashmira, Khar, Kharghar, Kopar Khainar, Lalbaug, Malad, Mankhurd, Mira Road, Mulund, Mumbai Central, Nerul, Panvel, Parel, Poisar, Sanpada, Santacruz, Shanti Nagar, Sheetal Nagar, Silver, Sion, Thane , Vashi, Vikroli, and Vile Parle.

Usually, all the buses for Darshan of Mumbai start from their respective depots, and after the pickup of all the participants, the buses take their first stoppage at around 09:30 AM near the Siddhivinayak Temple. Here onwards, they move towards the Nehru Science Centre in Worli by around 11:00 AM, followed by Marine Drive at around 12:30 PM.

After Marine Drive, almost all the buses follow the route to Colaba, where the visitors can have lunch by 01:00 PM. Post this, they take the visitors towards Apollo Bunder in South Mumbai by around 01:45 PM and after a quick visit of the vicinity the buses turn towards the Mahatma Gandhi Road by 02:30 PM.

Approximately by 03:30 PM, all the buses take a halt near the port, where the visitors can enjoy a short boat ride and continue with the other Mumbai Darshan places. Post this, buses head towards Walkeshwar, Napean Sea Road and Breach Candy. Before making their final move to Juhu Beach through the Bandra-Worli Sea Link at around 06:30 PM, the buses also make it to the Mahalaxmi Temple. Gateway of India

Counted among the most important landmarks of Mumbai, this historic structure was built between 1915 and 1919 to commemorate the historic visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India. Standing graciously at the Apollo Bunder, the immaculate architecture and craftsmanship of this historic site owe to its pride and honor. Measuring around 83 ft, it later served as the landing spot of all the viceroys and governors who visited India. This location is on the top in the Mumbai Darshan route.

Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati Mandir

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

Previously known as the 'Prince of Wales Museum of Western India', the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya or ' CST Museum ' serves as the most prominent museums in the city. Built during the 20th century to commemorate the visit of Prince of Wales to India, it is located on the Mahatma Gandhi Road and was renamed in the late 1990s.

Built in Indo-Saracenic architecture, the main building of this historical site also displays a mixture of several other forms of architecture and is considered to be an engineering marvel of a bygone era. Mahalakshmi Temple

Located within 1 km radius from the Mahalakshmi Railway Station, this sacred temple was built in 1831 by a merchant named Dhakji Dadaji. With Goddess Lakshmi as the main deity, this temple on the Breach Candy Road attracts a large number of devotees who throng this religious site to seek wealth and blessings from the Goddess. Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. This sightseeing place in Mumbai is one of the largest aquariums in the city of Mumbai. Situated in Marine Drive, this aquarium was founded by D. B. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist, in the year 1951. The aquarium has a twelve feet long three-sixty degrees glass tunnel that holds interesting marine life. Stepping off the train from Pune into the bustle of Fort and Colaba, it felt like I’d come home.

The feeling was not a complete surprise, after all there are plenty of British remnants to be found around Mumbai beyond the red double-decker buses, and London and Mumbai have been compared hundreds of times.

Since first stepping into Mumbai, the city has always had a special hold on me, one that led me to return many times and make it my home for a year, too, after meeting my other half (Ravi), a true Mumbaiker.

Despite our love of Mumbai, for many visitors it’s an overwhelming place – although the crown of India’s largest city has now been nabbed by Delhi (not necessarily a bad thing). Mumbai can be chaotic, crazy, charming and outright frustrating within the same day. It can also be, especially by Indian standards, an expensive city.

With all that said there are not many cities in the world where you can stroll by the ocean, eat delicious street food for under a dollar, rub shoulders with movie stars, party in 5* hotels, and visit a national park within the city limits in the same day.

Mumbai often gets overlooked by visitors to India in favour of the “Golden Triangle” and Rajasthan , but in our view Mumbai is well worth a few days of your time!

Mumbai: Know Before you Go

Despite our experiences of living in Mumbai, we don’t profess to know everything about this huge and constantly changing city, let alone be able to condense it into a single blog post. Consider the suggestions in this guide as starting points for your explorations, that will make you want to come back and discover more of Mumbai on your next trip to India!

Here are a few things to know specifically about travel in Mumbai. For general advice on preparing for your first trip to India, read our guide to planning a perfect trip to India here !

• What’s in a name? Bombay was re-named to Mumbai in 1995, but you’ll hear a mixture of Mumbai, Mum-bay and Bombay used. Many Mumbaikers still love and are attached to the name Bombay .
• Mumbai is a huge city in terms of size as well as population – you won’t be able to cover all of it. See our suggestions for where to base yourself in the where to stay section.
• Mumbai can be expensive compared to other areas of India, so allow flexibility in your budget accordingly.
• For a unique experience, visit during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival at the end of Monsoon each year, when Lord Ganesh is venerated, brought into homes before being immersed in water at the end of this festival.
• Mumbai is famous for the extremes it exposes – from extreme wealth to extreme hardship, it’s the city of dreams for some and of bad dreams for others – prepare yourself for some culture shock if this is your first Indian city.

What to Wear in Mumbai

As usual, men can get away with jeans and t-shirt (or shorts are fine in Mumbai although Indian men don’t wear them as much) and so not much advice is needed.

What to wear in Mumbai for Women:

Mumbai is less conservative than most other parts of India, and if you’re going out to party in Mumbai you’ll see many party-goers dressed up to the nines. Feel free to do the same, just travel by taxi and not by public transport in your party clothes!

In Mumbai many young women wear western style clothing, skinny jeans are as popular as saris here. Showing arms and shoulders is fine too, but I wouldn’t recommend thin-strappy tops (thick straps are fine) and avoid showing off your cleavage. Personally I always still cover my legs in Mumbai, but I have seen western women walking around Bandra (a bit of an expat enclave) in shorts without a problem.

My go-to outfit in Mumbai in winter is either a t-shirt and skinny jeans or a kurta/ tunic top like this one and leggings / jeans. It’s always handy to have a scarf with you for covering up, temples or in case it gets chilly in the Air Conditioning.

Essentials to Pack for Mumbai

Aside from Mumbai friendly clothing, make sure you have the following essentials for your time in Mumbai and the rest of India:

Responsible Travel in Mumbai

Mumbai is truly a city of contrasts – some of the world’s richest live next to those with very little, and it’s somewhat ironic that Dharavi – marketed as Asia’s largest slum has become the number one tourist attraction in India, surpassing even the Taj Mahal.

Slum Tours – Should you Go?

While there are some beneficial projects taking place in Dharavi thanks to tourism, many Mumbaikers would not like their city to be known foremost for its slums. There’s much more to Mumbai than Dharavi. We discuss the ethics of slum tours in Dharavi in detail in this post – if you’re in too much of a hurry to read the ins and outs of the issue, we suggest this:

• Dharavi is very different from most slums. Half of Dharavi is an industrial area, and it is this part which is usually shown during tours, not where people live.
• The ONLY tour company we recommend for Dharavi is Reality Travel & Tours – this is due to their no-photography policy in Dharavi and their consistent reinvestment into the slums .
• Do not go to Dharavi on your own
• Do not go to Dharavi with other tour companies. These are just profiting off peoples’ poverty, as these companies do not reinvest anything into improving conditions in Dharavi.

Different Areas of Mumbai

Although Mumbai is huge, most visitors to the city spend most of their time in Mumbai in “SoBo” (south Bombay) and the upmarket western suburb of Bandra. Mumbai’s beautiful airport is located near Andheri – so if you have an early morning flight from here we recommend staying close to here the night before to avoid the stressful Mumbai traffic.

You’ll likely find yourself spending most of your time in south Mumbai and Bandra / Western suburbs, especially if it’s your first trip to Mumbai.

Where to Stay in Mumbai

These are our favourite hotels in Mumbai. If you’re looking for hostels or budget options , we recommend the ones in Bandra listed below. Budget hotels around Fort, Churchgate and near VT station tend to be the kind that attract a more dubious crowd rather than backpackers. For single women travelling and staying in hostels, we always recommend booking a female only dorm (not a mixed one) .

Colaba Area

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel – One of the most famous hotels in the world, the iconic Taj is an experience not to be missed. The Taj is located just across from the Gateway of India off Colaba Causeway. There are often promotions available for the “tower rooms” (next to the main “palace” hotel building). Abode Bombay – Just a two minute stroll from the Gateway of India in Colaba near the Regal Cinema, I fell in love with this historic boutique hotel that was once the residence of Siegfried Sassoon. Residency Hotel Fort is a comfortable mid-range option that gets good reviews – handy if you want to be close to the train station. Check rates & availability here !

Marine Drive & Churchgate Area

InterContinental Marine Drive is the smartest hotel along Marine Drive (worth it for the roof-top pool with ocean views alone!), at the southern end of the “queen’s necklace” and within walking distance to churchgate station. Check rates & availability here !

Our Recommended Things to Do in Mumbai

There’s a lot to pack in to any stay in Mumbai! If you have limited time and a lot you want to see, taking a private tour of Mumbai can help pack a bit more in to a shorter time. Otherwise… you’ll just have to come back!

It makes sense to break things up into areas – aim to a half-day exploring Colaba after a trip to Elephanta for instance, or one day in south Mumbai and another exploring Dadar and Bandra. It can be easy to clock up miles exploring Mumbai, so remember to pack your comfortable walking shoes! If you’re going on public transport, we recommend closed shoes, as your feet may get stepped on.

Things to do in South Bombay

Colaba Walking Tour. Take a couple of hours to wander at your own pace taking in the main sights or book a walking tour with a guide .

Gateway of India. Turn up early for the best light for photos – this monument which was built by the British Raj in 1924 was the arrival point for dignitaries to Mumbai, and also the point from which British troops left India after independence in 1948. It’s now the departure point for ferries to Elephanta Island, and to the beach resort of Ali Bagh along the Maharashtrian coast.

Taj Mahal Hotel. If you’re not staying here, you can walk into the lobby of the Taj Mahal hotel for a look around (if you’re dressed nicely that is), go for a drink in the bar, or to take afternoon tea. The afternoon tea is overpriced and not the best (it’s served buffet style) but for the experience it’s still worth it, especially if you luck out and get a window seat, like I did.

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad (Formerly Victoria & Albert) Museum . North of the Gateway, towards CSMT station, you’ll walk past what used to be called the Albert Museum surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Built in 1872, this is a fine architectural piece. The museum is home to collections of manuscripts, artefacts, costumes and has recently been restored by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.

Colaba Causeway has a vibrant market (you’ll have to haggle hard for a good deal here) that you walk through.

Nariman Point , next to Cuffe Parade and right at the southern end of Marine Drive is home to Colaba’s business district, the national centre for performing arts, and Piramal Art Gallery which is home to different modern arts.

Art District in Fort – The area between Colaba and CSMT station is known as the Art District and is home to the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Jehangir Art Gallery, and the Institute of Contemporary Indian Arts. Look up exhibitions ahead of time, or drop in to cool down in the AC and enjoy India’s best art scene. You can also wander and look at the Horniman Circle & Asiatic Society .

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus – Known as CSMT, Mumbai’s iconic railway station has changed names a few times over the years, from “Victoria Terminus” or “VT” as it is still affectionately known, and is one of the architectural highlights of Mumbai. Don’t miss out on going inside and looking up to admire the beautiful ceilings of the old booking hall.

Marine Drive & the “Queen’s Necklace ” – Named after its streetlights at night which are said to mimic a string of pearls alongside the Arabian sea – Marine Drive is the go-to point for couples and anyone wanting to take a stroll along Mumbai’s oceanfront for some fresh(er) air. At the northern end, Chowpatty beach is full of groups of friends and some streetfood vendors come evening. A great spot for people watching, but don’t even think about taking a dip in the (highly polluted) water!

Haji Ali Dargah – This iconic mosque is on an island off the coast of Worli, it’s also the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who was a Sufi saint and a wealthy merchant originally from Uzbekistan. Bukhari gave up his belongings and travelled the world before settling in Mumbai. The Mosque is under constant repair given the battering it gets from the ocean.

Dadar is where south Mumbai meets the rest of the city and the volume increases a notch as tuk-tuks join the mix (tuk-tuks aren’t allowed south of Dadar). It’s an important junction for the local train lines as western and central lines meet here, and also a stone’s throw from Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s largest slum areas.

Dadar Flower Market – p hool gully (which means flower market) is a bold display of colour in bustling Mumbai, and the best place to buy flowers in the city for wholesalers. Come early in the morning to see the market coming to life and the famous auctions taking place.

Shri Siddhivanayak Temple – This grand and opulent temple near Dadar is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Ganesh, who represents prosperity, health and knowledge. Bollywood moviestars pay their respects here, and the temple is said to be one of the richest in India.

Dharavi – per our notes at the beginning of this post, we don’t recommend visiting Dharavi without a guide, or with just any guide or tour company. The arguments around slum tourism are emotional and complex – we do not support “poverty porn” which essentially is what many of the tours that allow you to take photos are. There is an argument though, that when done right, responsible tourism in slum areas that gives back to the community within the slums can be a positive thing. For that reason if you go to Dharavi, go with Reality Travel .

Bandra Fort & Bandra Bandstand – Make for a popular sunset spot that looks out over the impressive Bandra-Worli sea link bridge. The proper name for Bandra Fort is “Castello de Aguada” – the fort was built in 1640 by the Portuguese. The main attraction is for photos overlooking the bridge behind and general people-watching.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount (also known as Mount Mary Church) is up the hill from Bandra Bandstand, and one of the few Catholic churches in Mumbai. Every September, the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated here, known locally as the “Bandra Fair” and attracting people from all around.

Beyond the seaside walks and history, Bandra (along with neighbouring Khar) is known as Mumbai’s trendiest (and priciest) neighbourhood, with any number of hip bars and eateries, interesting shopping options and art galleries that are opening up. Some of our favourite spots to eat are below, or read this article for some hints on the hotspots .

Other Suburbs

Sanjay Gandhi National Park – This is an 87 square km national park in the heart of Mumbai’s suburban sprawl – home to leopards, birdlife, monkeys, spotted deer and the Kanheri caves. It makes for a beautiful alternative side of the city to explore and trek in. The main park entrance is in Borivali.

What & Where to Eat in Mumbai

You can’t visit Mumbai without sampling its amazing (and cheap) street food – if you’re nervous about getting sick then you can wait a few days before digging in (until your stomach has adjusted), stick to stalls that are busy (therefore have a faster turnover of food), stick to hot food, or you could take a street food tour .

Some quintessential Mumbai street food you won’t want to miss:

• Vada Pav – Mumbai’s answer to the veggie burger (but far more delicious!). A spiced potato pattie fried with chickpea batter (vada) is served in a fresh bun (pav), chilli and fresh chutneys such as tamarind chutney (sweet, red), coriander chutney (spicy, green) or coconut chutney (white, variably spicy). Costs around 15 rupees. Yum!
• Pav Bhaji – A staple of Bombay street food, toasted buttered fresh buns (pav) are served with a smashed vegetable curry, accompanied by dollops of butter, raw onion and coriander. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll want lots more! Costs around 40 rupees. If you’re watching your figure, you can request less/no butter but it doesn’t taste as good…
• Bombay Sandwich – These yummy grilled veggie sandwiches are perfect for a pre-dinner snack, and the best ones are outside the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Fort. Served with chutneys. Costs around 20 rupees.

Our Favourite Places to Eat in Mumbai

• Delhi Durbar (Colaba) – Famous for its non-veg options such as its Butter Chicken and Biryani
• Leopold’s (Colaba) – it’s overpriced and touristy, but no visit to Mumbai would be complete without a look in at Shantaram’s favourite hang out…
• Brittania & Co Parsi Cafe (Fort) – One of the top rated Parsi (Iranian) cafes in Mumbai
• Gaylord (Churchgate) – Delicious bakery and European style bistro meets pan-Indian cuisine
• Aaram Vada Pav (CSMT Station) – Great place to get your Vada Pav fix
• Cannon Pav Bhaji (CSMT Station) – For if you have any space after your Vada Pav
• Gajalee (Dadar) – This restaurant group (with several locations in Mumbai) consistently wins awards for its seafood
• Jay Shri Krishna Dairy Farm LASSI (Dadar West) – This narrow thin room is home to some of Mumbai’s most delicious lassi!
• C andies (Bandra) – This Portugese style villa restaurant is ever popular
• Goa – Portugesa (Bandra) – serves up delicious Goan style fish curries

Getting Around Mumbai

The quintessential way to get around Mumbai is on its local trains – but, we warn you, they are not for the faint hearted.

Local Trains

These are the fastest way to get up/down town, running up and down Mumbai from Churchgate (Western Line) and CSMT (Central and Harbour Lines). Trust us, though, that it is a very BAD idea to take these during rush hour, which in Mumbai covers anything between 6am – 10am going towards central Mumbai, and in the evening out of Mumbai.

People don’t sit on top of the trains anymore, thankfully, but there is plenty of dangerous hanging out of doors that goes on, and it’s a serious matter. Mumbaikers die in the crush to get to work every day.

If you decide to take the local trains in Mumbai, this is our advice (after having taken many of them):

• If you’re female, get in the Ladies carriage. It’s generally less crowded and you don’t have to worry about wandering paws (although keep an eye on your belongings)
• Don’t travel during rush hour
• Consider buying a first class ticket – the carriages are much quieter as the ticket is more than double the price
• Don’t attempt to get on or off the train while it’s still moving – no matter how keen your fellow passengers may be to take you down with them
• Never hang out of the door. If you’re near the door way – hold on tight to a pole!
• If it’s too busy / crowded for you then get off at the next station and take a cab instead.

On 3 Wheels

Tuktuks, Auto’s or 3-wheelers roam the city but only as far south as Dadar, they don’t operate in Colaba, Fort or the surroundings. In suburban Mumbai, most drivers will use their meters, but if you come across one who says his meter is not working, try to find another.

Mumbai Taxis

These can be found everywhere and are plentiful, as a tourist the main struggle is getting the drivers to use their meter. When arriving at one of Mumbai’s train stations I suggest using the pre-paid taxi line (where you pay in advance and don’t hand over the receipt to your driver until you’ve reached your destination) to avoid hassle.

Uber and OLA

A godsend in Mumbai if you’re fed up with Taxi drivers who overcharge, OLA and Uber are cheap and efficient. They’re just not immune to the Mumbai traffic.

Mumbai has a bus network but we don’t recommend it – the traffic moves slowly, buses are jam packed, and it’s the least efficient way to get around.

Travel in Mumbai FAQ’s

When is the best time to visit mumbai.

We recommend visiting Mumbai between September (if planning to come for Ganesh Chaturthi) or October through to March. This is winter in Mumbai and the most pleasant weather – evenings are cool, the humidity is lower, and in January Mumbaikers are even known to get their sweaters out. Enjoy it while it lasts.

We don’t recommend April – September. In April and May the humidity and heat climb to make Mumbai a little suffocating, and once the Monsoon breaks in June through to September the city is prone to flooding and transport chaos.

Is Mumbai Safe to Visit?

Depending on your perspective, Mumbai is a generally safe (or even very safe) city. You’d have to be unlucky to have anything untoward happen to you here. The main risk in Mumbai for visitors is spending more money than you planned to on Mumbai’s trendy restaurants and bars!

Mumbai is much more open for women travellers than say Delhi , and it’s normal to see women moving around by themselves late into the night. I’ve personally gone out alone in Mumbai (Colaba, Bandra, Marine Drive etc) and felt very safe.

Part of the reason for me that I feel at home in Mumbai is because I feel safe to do what I want, without having to think too much about it – although we always recommend following our tips for solo female travellers .

We do not recommend visiting slum areas on your own (see more on essential info on slum tourism below), and if you’re travelling around very late it’s better to take a taxi, or have the UBER or OLA app downloaded on your phone. Ladies can find more tips on what to wear in Mumbai below, too.

Where are the Best Places to Visit in Mumbai?

We recommend first time visitors to base themselves in the Colaba area of Mumbai which is closest to the main attractions.

How Long should I Stay in Mumbai For?

There’s enough to keep you busy in Mumbai for months, or even years! But in reality, most visitors spend 2-4 days here to scratch the surface of the city, see some of Mumbai’s highlights and make a plan to return to discover more.
