Everglades Alligator Farm

From alligators to exotic snakes, a day at Everglades Alligator Farm is an exciting experience. Take a day trip through South Dade to visit Homestead’s Everglades Alligator Farm. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., this Old Florida-style attraction is small and easy to navigate, perfect if you’ve got small children in tow. Even though the farm is landscaped with shade trees, orchids, ponds and waterfalls, it is a working alligator farm with more than 2,000 gators. During a visit, you can watch an alligator show, and witness an alligator feeding – all included with the general admission, which is $25 for adults, $19 for children aged 4-11, and free for children under 4. Other ticket and package options include animal encounters, airboat tours and VIP experiences.

Alligator Show

You'll be amazed as the Everglades Alligator Farm’s handlers step into an arena and use capturing techniques passed down by Native Americans to handle and restrain the alligators. You’ll learn all about alligators, as well as their reptilian relatives, such as crocodiles and caimans, in this educational and exciting show. Every show ends with the opportunity to take your picture holding a baby alligator. Alligator shows are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Alligator Feeding

For a spectacle you can’t “un-see,” stick around for an alligator feeding as several hundred gators emerge from their breeding pond for lunch. Not only will you see how fast these creatures can move, but you’ll also witness how they feed in the wild. Catch the alligator feedings at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.

Airboat Rides

Gliding across the glades aboard a high-speed airboat is easily the most exciting part of a visit to the Everglades Alligator Farm. You’ll spy on alligators in the wild, as well as turtles and tropical wading birds. It’s an exciting ride as the boat zooms across the river of grass making hairpin turns across a habitat you won’t see anywhere else. Airboat packages include general admission, a 20-25 minute airboat ride and shows, starting at $32 for adults, $24 for children aged 4-11, and free for children under 4.

Extended private airboat tours are also available, for a duration of 45-60 minutes. With this package, take advantage of the opportunity to step off the boat and explore the prairies of the Everglades. If you’re coming with a large group, the private tour might be a more suitable option, which allows for up to 25 people starting at $400 for a party of 10 (all ages). The ticket price includes general admission and access to the shows, as well. An advanced reservation is required for this tour.

Stop by Robert is Here , a popular fruit stand and farm located along the road to Everglades Alligator Farm. This is a great place to grab a mango, strawberry or Key lime milkshake and marvel at the truly amazing selection of exotic tropical fruits, honeys, jellies and jams produced on nearby farms in the Redland.

Follow Instructions During Airboat Tours.  Everglades airboat tours are exciting, but there are some protocols to make sure all guests stay safe. These rules include remaining seated and keeping your hands inside the boat at all times.

Respect Wildlife:  Feeding and disturbing wildlife is strictly prohibited. This protects visitors and animals alike.

Wear Safety Gear as Required:  Life jackets and other safety gear is provided and must be used as instructed for the safety of all.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

One of our favorite Orlando boat tours is in Winter Park. It was established in the 1930s, decades before Walt Disney World opened in Lake Buena Vista.

This pontoon boat tour starts near the well-known Park Avenue area. Set out on your scenic cruise from Lake Osceola to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes as your guide takes you through the manmade canals.

Sail past stunning homes in Winter Park, where you will have breathtaking views of the opulent private homes in the area (which is one of the reasons we enjoy the boat tour).

You will have a chance to see wonderful some of Florida’s beautiful birds, like Blue Herons and large cranes, as you travel on several lakes. 

Each boat holds a maximum of 18 passengers. Be sure to bring cash or a check to buy your tickets because credit cards are not accepted. We advise purchasing tickets in the morning on weekends, even if you plan on going later in the day. It’s a very popular tour, and tickets often sell out quickly. 

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour is closed on Christmas Day. Otherwise, tours leave daily on the hour, starting at 10:00 am. The last tour is at 4:00 pm.

While the Orlando boat tours listed above are within 30 minutes, on average, from Orlando, it’s worth mentioning there are more boat tour options nearby within a 2-hour drive. Here are some additional Central Florida boat tour options. 

Mount Dora Lake Tours

One of our favorite destinations from Central Florida is 45 minutes north: the quaint town of Mount Dora . There’s so much to see and do there in the afternoon or morning; a boat tour is the best way to extend your trip to a whole day. 

Take a 2-hour pontoon boat tour with a departure point at the historic hotel, the Lakeside Inn. Enjoy your leisurely cruise around Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes, including the famed Dora Canal.

The all-weather 25’ boats can cruise rain or shine thanks to their retractable clear covers for the sides of the boat. Choose from one of two daytime tours, or their third option to cruise during sunset. 

Clearwater Beach with Dolphin Encounter Cruise

This 12-hour full-day tour begins with pick-up at 7:30 am. You’ll head west of Orlando to the popular Florida destination (Clearwater Beach), where you will take a cruise to encounter bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. 

While this means that you aren’t guaranteed to spot dolphins, your tour guide will do his or her very best to find them. You may see these beautiful mammals up close by the boat or further in the distance if they appear in the ocean. Part of the fun is the anticipation. 

A one-hour dolphin tour boat ride is sandwiched between hours of free time on a Gulf Coast beach. For only $10 more, you can purchase a wristband for the boat ride that allows you to have unlimited beer, wine, and vodka punch. 

Pickup and drop off are included at one of three major locations of your choice (Disney areas included). This means that all you have to do is sign up for the tour and be at that location for pick-up time.

• Walt Disney World area, on Epcot Resorts Blvd. (northern area of the parks) 
• Walt Disney World area, at Maingate Lakeside Resort in Kissimmee (area of the Disney World theme parks that is further south)

Clear Canoe Boat Tour Near Orlando at Silver Springs

This clear canoe boat tour is approximately halfway between Orlando and Gainesville at Silver Springs. The drive is approximately an hour and 45 minutes from downtown Orlando. 

You’ll do a self-guided tour after the kayak company representative meets you and gives you a laminated map and some brief instructions. Paddle near Cypress Trees and see turtles, ducks, birds, and a chance to see manatees during the winter season, when they swim to Florida’s warm waters.

Dan and I often like to explore an area freely, on our own. Maybe you’re the same way! If so, this is a great tour for you in the Orlando area, as long as you can rent a car to get to the meeting point or take a taxi/Uber or Lyft there. 

Orlando Boat Tours at Walt Disney World

Did you know that you can rent motorized boats at Disney World? It’s one of the best things to do at Walt Disney World, besides the parks. 

Rent a Sun Tracker® Pontoon boat by the half-hour for up to 10 people. You can also opt to kayak or canoe from Fort Wilderness by the hour. 

One of the most singular boat tours in Orlando, or perhaps anywhere, is an Amphicar boat tour. Be a passenger and the envy of all onlookers in a cool convertible car that drives right into the water. This experience is available at Disney Springs restaurant, The Boathouse.

Lastly, you can book a specialty cruise to see the fireworks. You don’t even have to be a hotel guest to do so! Snacks and soft drinks are included in a memorable cruise on a 25’ boat. 

You can also request ​​for a festive banner and/or balloons to be set up on the boat, which is included in the cost (request at the time of booking). It’s a great thing to do for you and your partner or up to 10 guests total, whether a proposal, anniversary treat, or family reunion. 

What to Bring for Orlando Boat Tours

Florida's heat can be brutal, depending on the time of year. No matter the month, you definitely need to protect your skin from the sun. The sun in FL is strong, year-round.

An alligator in the Rio Grande? KSAT crew shares experience on exclusive ride along with Border Patrol in Eagle Pass

The Rio Grande stretches for hundreds of miles between Texas and Mexico.

In the Del Rio sector, which covers a 245-mile stretch of the border, Border Patrol agents travel up and down watching for signs of smuggling and illegal crossings.

Thousands of migrants crossed into Eagle Pass over the span of several days in December 2023.

Chief Patrol Agent Robert Danley said the agents on boat patrol played a big role.

“When we had the large number of folks crossing, it was constant rescues two, three a day some days,” he said.

In June, KSAT reporter Daniela Ibarra and photojournalist Adam Barraza were invited to ride along with a boat patrol.

The roughly 45-minute long ride covered around 12 miles of the border.

“It was an experience that not everybody gets to see,” Barraza said. “It’s not just a straight river. It’s curves in and waves and there’s bushes and there’s everything and there’s you know, plant life.”

Before boarding the boats, Border Patrol agents gave KSAT a safety briefing and a rundown of what to do if agents came across something of concern.

“We didn’t see anything,” said Ibarra. “But if [the agents] had to do their jobs, I mean, they were going to have to do their jobs.”

“I was prepared for anything and I was ready for anything,” added Barraza.

A stark contrast

On the ride along, KSAT saw several families on the Mexico side enjoying picnics, playing in the river, and fishing.

On the Texas side, KSAT only saw one man who Border Patrol agents identified as a local rancher.

Near Shelby Park, shipping containers and silver razor wire sat on the edge of the U.S. border.

Across the river in Piedras Negras, there are colorful murals and a perch for people to look at the U.S.

Sights and sounds

The Border Patrol airboat is loud. Everyone on board has to wear headsets to try and communicate.

It moves quickly and agents know when to weave through currents and around rocks in the water.

“I also did not expect to get hit in the face with bugs as much as we did,” Ibarra said.

“Yeah. I’m glad, I’m glad we all had glasses,” said Barraza.

At points in the river, agents said the river is shallow and ankle-deep and in other spots it can get several feet deep.

An alligator in the water?

Before boarding the boat, the Border Patrol agents warned KSAT about danger that could be lurking in the Rio Grande.

They told our crew an alligator had been in the river for years. They said it was someone’s pet that ended up in the Rio Grande.

One agent said he had seen -- and heard it -- the week before our boat ride.

Agents told our crews they would stop if they saw it, but the alligator didn’t make an appearance.

Daniela Ibarra joined the KSAT News team in July 2023. This isn’t her first time in the KSAT newsroom– the San Antonio native spent the summer of 2017 as an intern. Daniela is a proud Mean Green alum, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas.

Adam Barraza

Adam Barraza is a photojournalist at KSAT 12 and an El Paso native. He interned at KVIA, the local ABC affiliate, while still in high school. He then moved to San Antonio and, after earning a degree from San Antonio College and the University of the Incarnate Word, started working in news. He’s also a diehard Dodgers fan and an avid sneakerhead.
