12 Best Travel Trailers for Couples for 2024

The beauty of the best travel trailers for couples for 2024 is that they can be just about anything. It’s just you and your partner, and the travel trailer that becomes your new home doesn’t have to adhere to anything other than what you, as a couple, want and need.

Here is a variety of popular choices within the industry and, hopefully, one of these will become your next home on the road.

1. Heartland Sundance 231ML

Sundance XLT 231 ML Exterior

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Large curtain that draws across the bedroom, offering privacy when needed

⛔ Some people don’t prefer the kitchen in such proximity with the bathroom

  • Length: 26′ 11”
  • UVW: 5,090 lbs
  • CCC: 2,410 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,532 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 532 lbs

The Heartland Sundance 231ML has everything a couple needs in a relatively lightweight travel trailer. A spacious kitchen, plenty of R&R space, a large privacy curtain for when guests are staying over, a large kitchen, and a sizeable shower/bathroom setup.

The marine-grade flooring is an excellent choice, especially for the slide. If you like the feel of carpet underneath your bare feet, you’ll have to shop for some rugs. The dinette is large and converts into a bed for guests, while the sofa also converts, opening up the potential for 6 to sleep comfortably.

2. Oliver Legacy Elite II

Oliver Legacy Elite Exterior - travel trailers for couples

✅ One of the most durable travel trailers on the market, by far

⛔ Lack of storage is strange, considering the Elite II is a 23′ camper

  • Length: 23′ 6”
  • UVW: 1,300 lbs
  • CCC: 3,700 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,000 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs

All Oliver travel trailers look pretty much the same, inside and out. However, these are incredibly durable travel trailers. Olivers are all fiberglass, with two inner shells and two outer shells, connected to an aluminum frame and stuffed with insulation.

A lot of RVers have to deal with water leaks from time to time, and that’s something Oliver excels at avoiding.

The interior is as sterile (in terms of aesthetics) as the exterior, though that opens the door for a ton of personal, creative customization options. The interior of the Oliver Legacy Elite II is very spacious, as the floorplan on offer.

Counter space is as extensive or minimal as you want, since every major piece of furniture shifts or folds in one way or another.

3. East To West Alta 2400KTH

East To West Alta 2400KTH Exterior

✅ Happi-Jack w/bunk over the garage is perfect for guests

⛔ King is large, but the mattress hangs over the edge of the bed by about 6″

  • Length: 28′
  • UVW: 7,305 lbs
  • CCC: 4,042 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,385 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 985 lbs

Some couples don’t like to sit at home all day, preferring adventure and mobility instead. For those with an adventurous itch, the king bed, East to West Alta 2400KTH is the perfect choice. As a toy hauler, you can bring your favorite ATV, dirt bikes, kayaks, SUPs, and/or mountain bikes, along for the ride.

At 14′ deep, the garage will accommodate a lot. As far as clear space, away from the kitchen appliances, you have about 6′ x 6′ for a mid to small size ATV.

Once you get your toys out, dual-opposing couches fold over into a bed, and the Happi-Jack Bunk drops down to convert the entire back end into a massive bunk bed setup!

4. Coachmen Apex Nano 191RBS

Coachmen Apex Nano 191RBS Exterior

✅ Plenty of storage space inside and out, with pass-thru, pantries, cabinetry, and more

⛔ Lacks counter space and could really use a flip-up extension

  • Length: 21′ 8”
  • UVW: 3,446 lbs
  • CCC: 1,254 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,700 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 406 lbs

If you like to pack a lot of gear for the trip, the Coachmen Apex Nano 191RBS is a good fit. There are storage options all over the place. Boondocking and going off-grid requires plenty of storage, especially if you want to go off-grid for a while.

It’s not exactly a purely off-grid model, but it’s close, with plenty of opportunities to bring in some third-party components and accessories.

It comes with space for dual 20-gallon propane tanks and room for a two-battery setup. Azdel sidewalls and a fiberglass front cap up the durability factor, with Goodyear Wrangler tires for leaving the asphalt.

It’s also sitting on a fully boxed frame and an exterior that will accommodate any cooking or power conveniences you need.

5. Airstream Bambi 19CB

Airstream Bambi 19CB Exterior - Travel trailers for couples

✅ One of the most loaded campers of this size on the market

⛔ The Bambi is known for being troublesome when backing up and parking in reverse

  • Length: 16′ 1”
  • UVW: 3,050 lbs
  • CCC: 450 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

The Airstream Bambi is definitely the bougie option in the the travel trailers for couples category. With a reputation that precedes it, Airstream took everything you expect to find in a traditional size and successfully made it micro.

The first stand-out thing you’ll notice is the panoramic front window for those adventurous scenes out in the middle of nowhere.

Airstream did a great job maximizing space by including a tankless water heater setup on the exterior, storage options integrated with the furniture, a compact kitchenette, a corner-split, folding door for accessing the bathroom, and a corner bed that shares the back end with a corner bath.

Everything about the Bambi defines attention to maximum storage without sacrificing amenities.

6. Safari Condo Alto F2114

best couple travel trailer

✅ All the windows open to 90° and come with day/night shades

⛔ With this much tech, you’d think the awning would be a power awning—nope

  • Length: 13″
  • UVW: 2,356 lbs
  • CCC: 1,144 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

The Safari Condo Alto F2114 is one of those hybrid lightweight travel trailers that straddles a number of lines, including teardrop, traditional travel trailer, and off-grid behemoth.

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at any of the Safari Condo options is “unique.” It definitely carries that “wow” factor. But does it exceed expectations? We certainly think so.

Safari Condo construction involves a lot of customer input, so buying one used means accepting someone else’s design decisions. Everything else about the Condo is a unique spin, like 90° windows, subtle modular options on the interior, positive latches, an under-the-dinette A/C, and an alumi-fiber and aluminum construction built on an independent, Torflex torsion axle suspension.

7. Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW

Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW Exterior - Travel trailers for couples

✅ The Forest River Wolf Pup packs in a ton of amenities while still maximizing space

⛔ There are no drawers in this rig—weird

  • Length: 19′ 3”
  • UVW: 2,898 lbs
  • CCC: 1,002 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,900 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 400 lbs

The tiny little Wolf Pup has more to offer on the inside than one might expect. These Wolf Pups are the quintessential travel trailers for couples. They feature neat, little, compact design ideas that never manage to take away all the remaining space.

This thing even includes a full size fridge; quite the accomplishment for a camper not much larger than a big teardrop!

It comes with a solar package that you don’t have to throw in there as a separate option, a standard backup camera, power awning, single 20-gallon propane tank, an exterior leash latch for pets, and an upgraded group-27 battery.

8. Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB

Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB Exterior

✅ Extremely light for its size, allowing for more towing options

⛔ 10-gallon freshwater and 5-gallon black tank eliminates long-term boondocking/off-grid

  • Length: 18′ 9”
  • UVW: 2,020 lbs
  • CCC: 1,480 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 154 lbs

The Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB is one of the lightest travel trailers for couples in this size. The all-aluminum construction, tankless water heater, one-piece non-rubber roof, and Tuson sway control all contribute to the lightweight and easy tow ability of this option without sacrificing interior space.

Speaking of the interior, it’s far more sizeable than the exterior leads you to believe. A large amount of counter space takes up an entire wall, with a quaint little dinette opposite. The rear bedroom encapsulates the bed, leaving enough room for a two-piece, decent-sized bathroom.

9. Winnebago Micro Minnie 1821FB

Winnebago Micro Minnie 1821FB Exterior - Travel trailers for couples

✅ This thing is made to be gear-heavy, packing a shocking amount of storage space for its size

⛔ Lacks the much better 320-Amp lithium battery of the FLX versions

  • Length: 21′ 3″
  • UVW: 4,086 lbs
  • CCC: 914 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 312 lbs

The Winnebago Micro Minnie 1821FB is one of several floorplans in the Micro Minnie lineup. It’s one of those travel trailers for couples that are seemingly designed for just that while allowing for guests from time to time.

The slideout turns this micro into a much more sizeable camper on the inside—enough to make you forget its size class.

There’s a surprising amount of storage available, especially to the left of the door, when you walk in, underneath the HDTV. The counter space is meh, but the cutting board cover provides enough extra space when needed.

The bedroom space is just large enough to hold the full bed, with dual-opposing windows for plenty of natural lighting.

10. Grand Design Imagine AIM 15RB

Grand Design Imagine AIM 15RB Exterior

✅ Includes a full rear bathroom and a lot more space than it looks from the outside

⛔ Not much in the way of counter space

  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,594 lbs
  • CCC: 1,201 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,795 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 378 lbs

The Grand Design Imagine AIM 15RB comes with a camper queen Murphy bed setup, right when you walk in the door. And, that’s the running theme with the rest of the camper, utilizing what works to maximize the available living space when you’re not sleeping or resting. The sinks are pop-up, with hinged covers, next to single-row, vertical, dual-burner cooktop.

There are plenty of small storage options throughout as well. The fridge is large enough, with a drawer freezer at the bottom. The dinette is smallish, with narrow bench seats that convert into a bed.

This all allows for a bathroom that takes up the rear fifth of the travel trailer. It’s small but far more efficient and spacious than most bathrooms on RVs of this size.

11. Gulf Stream Envision 220RB

Gulf Stream Envision 220RB Exterior - Travel trailers for couples

✅ Enormous shower within a large bathroom

⛔ Interior ambiance is a bit dark, so it may need some additional lighting

  • Length: 27′ 11″
  • UVW: 5,620 lbs
  • CCC: 2,000 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,620 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 620 lbs

The Envision 220RB is the smallest of the travel trailers for couples in the entire Envision line. However, it doesn’t look all that small when you’re standing in front of one.

Step inside, and the horizons broaden even more, with an enormous living space and kitchen area. Even the bathroom has room for an actual countertop.

There are plenty of deep storage spaces to the right as soon as you walk in the door. The L-shaped couch is a nice touch and is only doable because of the living room size.

The L portion of the couch pops up for access to a large storage space. The private bedroom has a standard queen that allows for plenty of walk-around space, and a king bed upgrade option.

12. Jayco Jay Flight 210QB

Jayco Jay Flight 210QB Exterior - Travel trailers for couples

✅ Though it’s a couple’s camper, dinette and sofa fold down for guests

⛔ Removable ladder instead of a permanent one for the walk-on roof

  • Length: 25′ 8″
  • UVW: 4,195 lbs
  • CCC: 1,305 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 500 lbs

As our travel trailers for couples list draws to a close, we’ll leave you with the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 210QB , an excellent option in its own right. This one is unique in several ways, starting with the dinette. It sits in the rear of the travel trailer, directly across from a small, jack-knife sofa, which is close enough to share the table.

The second aspect is the standard 200-watt solar package with a 30-amp controller. The carpetless, ventless flooring is easy to clean, and you’ll notice the vents are out-of-sight and circular throughout the RV.

The camper queen is a walk-around, flanked by a hanging closet and a dresser space behind two mirror cabinets.

What Is the Perfect Travel Trailer for Two People?

What Is the Perfect Travel Trailer for Two People

So what is the best travel trailer for you and your significant other? This can be a tricky question since many factors come into play.

To answer this question, you’ll first want to sit down together and make a list of what’s important to you both. What are the features you absolutely must have?

Based on your needs and wants, you can narrow down the travel trailers that fit your lifestyle best.  Determining if you are the minimalistic comfort camper or glampers will go a long way toward helping you filter down your choices even more.

Next, you’ll want to think about your budget. In addition to the actual price of the travel trailer, be sure to add in the cost of insurance and registration . Consider whether or not you’ll need to purchase a larger vehicle to tow your rig.

It’s also important to think about the potential cost of storing your travel trailer when not in use.

Finally, think about how you’ll use your travel trailer and for how many years. Not only will you get more bang for your buck buying used, but you also won’t feel guilty trading in your rig in just a few years if your needs change. Buying used is also a great option if you plan to renovate your camper.

How Much Space Is Needed for a Couple?

How Much Space Is Needed for a Couple

So, how do you decide which of these great travel trailers for couples is best for you and your significant other? Well, first, you need to think about how much space you require as a couple. Each couple will be different because there are different camping styles.

They say love grows in small places. If you’re simply looking for a camper to use for quick weekend getaways, you may not want every bell and whistle. Simplicity and ease of use are likely the most important factors to the minimalist camping couple.

If minimalist is your style, you’ll love a small travel trailer for couples like Sunset Park Sunray.  Tiny campers can still pack in all the necessary amenities without breaking the bank or necessitating an upgraded tow vehicle.

When you take a step back and evaluate your camping style, maybe you realize you need just a little more space and a few more amenities.

If you don’t mind the idea of sharing a smaller space but the thought of a wet bath gives you anxiety, you likely fall into the comfortable camper category. The best travel trailer for your couple’s camping style will be something like the Coachman Clipper or the Jayco Jay Flight.

You may be reading this wondering how you’re going to fit fifty pairs of shoes in a camper without a slide. Or maybe you and your significant other are very much one of those “opposites attract” type of couples, and you know that you’ll both need your own storage space.

Perhaps the wine cooler and fireplace options are just too enticing to pass up. If any of these sounds like you, you’ll love the luxury travel trailer for couples like the CrossRoads Zinger or the Keystone Cougar.

No matter your camping style, the most important thing is understanding what’s important to you and your partner when choosing the best travel trailer for you as a couple.

Is It Better To Buy Or Rent An RV?

Speaking from a couple’s only perspective, it’s better to rent an RV, rather than buy one, if you only plan to go camping periodically throughout the year, and would rather save money for later down the road.

Several potential dynamics may or may not apply to a decision like this, so it really comes down to your plans and wants.

If you want to hit the road (extensively) with your partner, one or both of you working from home, buying is probably the better option. However, even if that’s the case, there are a ton of potential travel trailers for couples out there, and renting allows you to test drive several models.

For instance, if you have your eye on the above Airstream Bambi, why not rent one? You’ll learn everything you need to know about it and can make a more informed decision later.

Where the both of you are in life, your work arrangements, potential retirement, financial status, and how often you want to go camping all play significant roles in your final decision.

4 Best Travel Trailers for Couples in 2022

Travel trailer at sunset

Many couples long for the open road, but too many of them let that dream remain a dream.

For those of you looking to purchase your first trailer or upgrade your current trailer, here are several choices that I consider to be the best travel trailers for couples.

2021 Best Travel Trailers for Couples

1. 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2250RK 2. Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS 3. Coachmen – Freedom Express 259FKDS 4. 2021 Keystone Cougar 22RBS

2021 Grand Design Imagine 2250RK

2020 Grand Design Imagine 2250RK

Grand Design is well-known for its 285-point pre-delivery inspections. Their campers are often better designed and overall more reliable than much of their competition. The 2250RK is one model from their lineup which I believe most couples will appreciate.

What doesn’t work for one situation can work perfectly for another. This layout is a good example of this truth. The bathroom separates the bedroom from the rest of the camper. If the 2250RK housed more than three people, it would be a source of constant frustration. Owned by a couple, it becomes a nice buffer for those early bird/night owl combinations. There are three living separate living spaces within this unit. Let’s go over each of them.

Living Area

It’s the classic combination in a not so classic configuration. The dinette and the kitchen are usually placed on opposing walls with a small pathway between them. In the 2250RK, they place the kitchen at the rear of the camper which gives it a large area for its counter-tops, three-burner stove, oven, microwave, and a plethora of storage cabinets. One side of the nearby wall space is occupied by two theater seats which oppose a fireplace, counter, and a telescoping 40″ TV. The theater seats are fully featured and double as a couch. They come with cup-holding armrests and pop-out leg rests. The theater seats heat, they massage, and they are super comfortable. If you want to convert it to the couch, simply lift the center armrests and its done.

No Dining Table

It isn’t something that you see too often, and I have mixed feelings about it. It is annoying to not have a table to place your plates and random belongings, but it opens up a lot of space. It pairs with the unique layout to create an almost residential size of space where you can comfortably stretch. After a little adjusting, I don’t think most people will miss the table. There are nearby alternative surfaces, kitchen counters, and an end cabinet, so I think what you gain is worth the cost of what you lose.

This unit comes with a single slide that houses the refrigerator, the pantry, and the fireplace. It is such a great use of the space, and you should definitely check it out by using the Grand Design website’s 3d viewer. It’ll make you a fan.

The Bathroom

The Grand Designers created a nice bathroom. The size of the room and placement of the fixtures leaves plenty of space. You won’t feel cramped on the toilet and the shower is tall enough to fit 99% of you.

The Bedroom

The bedroom is basic, but each component looks clean and feels like quality. The storage is what you might expect. His and hers hanging closets rest at opposing sides of the queen bed (60″ x 80″). Storage sits above the bed, and an over-sized bin works as the bed’s support. There isn’t a TV, but it is prepped for both TV and cable. If you want to do some reading, there are reading lights.

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS

Flagstaff E-Pro Trailer

The E19FBS isn’t right for everybody. In fact, in most cases, I would recommend another unit because the Forest River targets a specific audience. These units are best for first-time RV buyers that want to enter the lifestyle but cannot afford the higher-tier units. The quality control isn’t as good as some other brands, and the materials are often, but not always, lower quality or thinner than some of their counterparts. However it still makes our list as one of the best travel trailers for couples.

I love the design. Yes, it is short, so this is a game of sacrifices. It has an open floor plan, so it successfully keeps the unit from feeling claustrophobic even though it is only 20′ long.

Minimal would be a good way to describe it. You do have several spots for storage, but none of it will add up to a comfortable full-time living level of storage. Keep that in mind if you want a seasonal unit rather than a weekend-camper.

The Bed

If the front of the unit is considered north, the queen bed is to that north. They size it at 60″ X 80″, so it is a residential queen rather than the commonly short-changed RV version. You do have some storage both above and below. The storage above the bed is netted and the lower storage is smaller than most under-bed storage compartments.

The Kitchen

To the east, you will find the kitchen. There isn’t much counter-top space if everything is uncovered and in use. However, if the stove’s connected glass cover is closed, the added surface makes the space manageable.

The oven is great! I’ve seen a lot of larger RVs that have ovens that can’t fit much more than a tray of muffins. You have a bit more space with this camper’s oven.

It’s plastic; the whole thing: toilet, shower, shower curtain, and the sink. It’s also a bit on the small side, so there will not be a lot of room to stretch out. If the shower curtain was glass, your knees would probably uncomfortably pressed up against it. However, all of that is expected at this price point, so don’t hate on them too much. The silver lining is that this is a full bath unit which isn’t a given for a unit this size.

Coachmen – Freedom Express 259FKDS

best couple travel trailer

A new year brings new models, and in the case of the Freedom Express line, a new floor plan. The 259FKDS is a fresh take on one of the classic front-kitchen designs. With this fresh take, the 259FKDS brings several needed improvements that have frustrated many otherwise enjoyable weekends. This model comes from Coachmen’s ultra-lite luxury line of travel trailers. The lightweight design, great features, and the comparatively low price point create a fantastic entry point for a wide range of prospective buyers.

Easy To Haul

The combination of a short, lightweight trailer that sits on wide-stance axles makes this a super easy to haul. The wider stance, in a way, gives the driver training wheels by making the trailer pull like a smaller unit. This unit doesn’t come with a backup camera, but it is prepped for it, so that should be easy enough to upgrade.

Amazing Storage

I feel like a broken record by saying this again, but it has great storage. Correction, it has incredible storage. Not only is there storage in every nook and cranny of this camper, but there is a full-through exterior compartment. You don’t normally get one of those on front kitchen designs. That is one of the improvements to this type of floorplan that I was talking about earlier.

Outdoor Kitchen

Another blueprint improvement is the existence of an outdoor kitchen. It’s all there: a cabinet, a large sink with a high-rise faucet, and a medium-sized mini-fridge. Everybody loves a bit of outdoor grilling, and Coleman conveniently included one of their high-quality grills too. There is also a small pocket of space for some storage. Haylett RV suggested placing a small container of utensils in that spot which is a fantastic suggestion.

Indoor Kitchen

It’s fully equipped and nearly as convenient as a residential kitchen. It has great storage and amazing pantry space. The counters are large and the stainless steel double-basin sink has a high-rise faucet. You have the typical cooking appliances: oven, microwave, and three-burner stove.

Room to Stretch

Whether you are tall or wide, this space should work for you. Unless the slides are closed, you should be very comfortable in all of its spaces. The tall 6’9″ ceiling, spacious floor plan, and comfortable seating will welcome almost any size or shape.

I said spacious, and I meant it. The porcelain foot-flush toilet isn’t cramped and the shower with the classy glass door takes full advantage of the tall ceilings. You get some nice storage and somewhat decent counter space.

They managed to fit in a king-size bed. Don’t ask me how. It barely fits, but it does leave enough room to make your way around its edges. Most trailers this size do not have this size of a bed. However, most trailer bedrooms aren’t designed for anything but the bed and storage, so you aren’t really losing any true functionality. I actually like this bedroom’s design more than most units. They still managed to designed to keep it feeling open. There are several large cabinets over the head of the bed, to the sides, and past the foot of the bed.

At the foot, there is a lot of shelving space where the TV is installed. Of course, that comes with all the typical entertainment hookups.

2021 Keystone Cougar 22RBS

Keystone Cougar

Keystone has made one of the best small trailers available today. The 22RBS is a large trailer in a little trailer’s body. It has inherited the big-bodied genetics of the larger trailers but somehow managed to contain them within a very small 25’11” frame. As we go through each of the features, you will see how time after time this trailer exceeds all expectations.

Four Season Camping

Small trailers are very rarely built to withstand the colder temperatures. Thanks to a plethora of weather-related features, the 22RBS cannot only stand a chilly day, but it is rated for zero-degree temperatures. It has a heated and enclosed underbelly, a radiant barrier, and tank heaters. The furnace lines that warm the trailer are set next to the waterlines so that they can take advantage of the radiating heat.

All of that is great for keeping the cold out and the heat inside the trailer. What about if the interior is already at an uncomfortable temperature. If that’s the case, you will be happy to know that the 22RBS includes a 15,000 BTU air conditioner and the 35,000 BTU heater. Between those two, no matter the weather, you will be able to quickly transform any uncomfortable situation into something much more comfortable. It is incredible that the 15,000 BTU is a standard feature. If it was any other brand of trailer, this would definitely be an upgrade. This is a benefit that is included thanks to Keystone’s standardization practice; one of several.

Even though this is considered a lightweight trailer, which it is, it has the 2-inch sidewalls of a heavyweight. It’s a great money saver if you plan on using those costly environmental controls.

If you like a nice breeze on a summer day, you will be happy to know of the many windows that you can find around the unit. Some of the windows are quite large too. The trailers slide is almost entirely composed of them. They are all tinted too, so you will still have the privacy that most of us desire.

Short and Sturdy

The chassis and axles are supremely overpowered which says great things that its ability to withstand all of the potentially damaging effects of time and weight. It also means that you will be able to have a massively increased cargo capacity. Thanks to one of the best uses of storage space; you will have plenty of ways to take advantage of it.

I know I keep bringing this up on each unit, but it is important. There is a TON of storage space. It’s fantastic that there are so many places for storage because the chassis and axles opened the ability for us to make even more room for storing items. In addition to all of that space, you also get the largest hanging closet that I’ve seen in quite a long time. It’s been noted that you could, and people have, fit an entire refrigerator in there.

Any cooks out there should start celebrating. You might just have the best kitchen for a unit of this size. Big counter-tops, lots of storage, three-burner stove, an oven, a double-basin stainless steel sink with a high-rise faucet, a microwave, and all of it just looks fantastic.

In Command App

Your touchscreen command center can connect to your phone. Anything that you would normally control from the panel is accessible from your pocket. It’s super convenient, and I am happy to say, becoming increasingly common across all RVs.

  • Fresh: 60 Gallons
  • Exterior Height: 11 Feet, 4 Inches
  • Exterior Length:25 Feet, 11 Inches
  • Shipping Weight: 1,593 Pounds
  • Gross Combined Vehicle Weight: 7,200 Pounds
  • 70″ x 80″ King-size bed
  • Large 4K TV on Articulating Mount
  • 3-Inch Solid Door Frames
  • Related Floor Plans: 13
  • MSRP Price: $36,217

Conclusion On The Best Trailers for Couples

Ultimately the best trailer that will work for you and your partner as a couple will depend on your own personal wants and needs. Narrow the list of trailers down by common features that you would both like to have and then start to include additional features.

  • Sleeps more persons than a usual couple’s size trailer

This is one of the best luxury travel trailers for couples out there. After much scrutinizing, this travel trailer made it to our list and you would find out why.

First, the reason is that we wanted to include a travel trailer with the capacity to haul. We understand that some couples would love to explore their site with an ATV or bring along more heavy camping gear. Despite being small and lightweight, this trailer would haul 3 ATVs.

Surprising right? well, thanks to its anti-rust aluminum frame that guarantees durability and strength. Moreover, it only weighs 2,300 pounds.

There are about 7 series of this model with different sizes capable of sleeping between 4 – 7 persons.

Quicksilver VRV XTR 614 comes with a large bed and a convertible sofa bed. Other features include a dry bath, outdoor entertainment, a screened-in back ramp, refrigerators, and TV.

Again, you can always upgrade your trailer anytime with every luxury you found appealing.

  • Large 12’ awning to provide outdoor shade
  • Numerous storage spaces both interior and exterior
  • Can serve as a toy hauler for ATVs
  • Although lightweight, it may seem too bulky

4. Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS travel trailer

  • 17-floor plans
  • Recessed ceiling LED 12-volt interior lighting
  • Driftwood interior
  • Power awning with adjustable rain dump and LED lighting
  • Fully aluminum frame (Floor, roof, and sidewall)
  • Vinyl/rubber composite roofing membrane
  • Interior Height: Unknown
  • Exterior Length: 20 Feet
  • Exterior Height: 9 Feet, 9 Inches
  • Wet Weight: 4,413 Pounds
  • Unloaded Vehicle Weight: 3,075 Pounds

This may not be the best as regards material selection, but there are a lot of advantages that make this camper stand out. We wanted to recommend a product for first-time RV buyers. This is one of the most affordable for anyone looking to own their first RV cheaply .

The only major con we found with this trailer is that the quality control isn’t as good as some other brands. The exterior materials are of lower quality or thinner than some of their counterparts. Well, this is nothing too much to be worried about because it is only based on the comparison.

The storage is moderate, and not too accommodating, but for couples, it should just be sufficient to pack all the needed gear.

There is a comfortable 60″ X 80″ queen bed, a sofa, a functional kitchen with a heat extractor, and a functional bathroom. It also comes with electrical appliances such as a refrigerator and TV set.

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS only sleeps two persons and weighs less than 3000 lbs.

  • It is affordable
  • Lightweight and easy to haul
  • Awning for outdoor shade
  • Not the best material selection

So we thought to include a camper with lots of openings, especially for couples who would love hitting the road every summer. Luckily, we found one that meets our criteria.

Cricket is not your usual camper; it is one of a kind and loaded with all features that will give you a romantic memory.

This tiny guy manages to include a full bed that can sleep two adults and 2 children and a kitchen.

Note that this is more like a tent, so you do not get to have all the features of a regular travel trailer. Haven said that – the only challenge is that it comes with a portable toilet and an outdoor shower rather than a functional convenience.

Cricket is extremely lightweight, weighing just 1,700 lbs.

  • There is a 2-year structural warranty
  • Can accommodate a small family of 4
  • Extremely lightweight and easy to haul
  • Roof pops up for improved ventilation
  • No functional toilet or bathroom indoors

Checklist For Buying A Travel Trailer For Couples

RVs For Two Couples

If you still want to check out other options apart from the ones we have recommended here, we will advise that you take some of the following factors into consideration to help you buy right

1. The capacity of the trailer

We understand that you just want a travel trailer for you and your partner. However, you may want to make some futuristic considerations.

Rather than having to upgrade the unit or buy another camper when the children start coming into the game, you may want to consider buying a camper that will sleep more people.

At least, a camper that can conveniently sleep 4 persons would be a good one to start with.

2. The storage capacity

Some couples overlook this feature. We find it to be important because the more storage capacity, the more survival gears, and items you can bring with you for every journey. Make this criterion a priority if you would be camping for a longer period often.

Whether interior storage or exterior storage, as long as it can take everything you would need, it is just fine.

3. The weight of the trailer

If you do not want to bother about changing your car to a bigger one that can tow your camper , then you’d want to buy one that your present fleet can effortlessly tow.

Luckily, smaller campers recommend for couples are lightweight with the heaviest still under 3,000 lbs.

Go with any of our recommendations and you would not need to worry about this. Not forgetting to mention that there are also more advantages to going for a lightweight travel trailer which we already highlighted in a section of this article above.

4. How much space do you want?

Even though most travel trailers for couples are small and compact, some options are lightweight yet spacious. Depending on your preference, you can go for one that will give you and your partner enough floor space for fun activities.

No doubt, a spacious trailer would be more comfortable. You don’t always have to sacrifice portability for space. Small trailers can too be spacious if they have included a convertible bed and sofa that can go out of the way when transformed.

5. Consider four-season RVs

Not many people go on road trips or camps during winter . But if you and your partner are looking to explore all 4 weather, you may have to narrow your selection based on this factor.

All campers aren’t adapted for winter living . You would have to find one that offers durable insulation and a propane furnace that measures up with space. We have reviewed some of the best options; you may want to check them out and also check out the criteria for picking one.

Since this camper would be for you both, it is always better to have both of you decide on what to go for. Each partner can write down what features he/she would love to see and combine both to find which trailer offers the most of them.

We wish you good luck in picking the best for you. Since it’s going to be just the two of you, don’t forget to take with you everything you will need to have an engaging trip while you seek to strengthen your relationship.

Best Travel Trailers For A Couple Reviews

While considering the best travel trailers for a couple we also kept in mind things like lightweight towing characteristics.

We recognized that if you only need to sleep two people, that you can get away with a slightly smaller, and lighter travel trailer that can be pulled by a typical midsize SUV.

Of course, we also realize that a lot of couples love some extra elbow room.

So, we also made sure to include some larger models that might also need a full-size pickup truck to tow them.

Here are 6 of the most comfortable and luxurious camper trailers for a RVing couple:

  • Coachmen – Freedom Express LTZ 252RBS
  • Forest River – Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S
  • Airstream – Flying Cloud 23FB
  • Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T
  • Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK
  • Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB

1. Coachmen – Freedom Express LTZ 252RBS

Coachmen - Freedom Express LTZ 252RBS

  • Length of 29.58 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 5,822 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,778 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,600 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 672 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 50.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 35.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 35.0 gallons
  • 13,500 BTU Air Conditioner

On paper, the Coachmen – Freedom Express LTZ 252RBS travel trailer can sleep up to 6 people, though once you set foot in it, think you’ll agree that it’s set up best for a couple.

Then you can use things like the convertible dinette booth and the hide-a-bed sofa for times when you might want to have a guest or the grand kids sleepover. If anything the hide-a-bed might let one of you get a good night’s sleep, even if the other one is snoring like a chainsaw.

One of the other features that appeal to couples looking for a travel trailer is the large entertainment center that can be adjusted toward the dinette or the sofa. This lets you watch TV while you eat, or lets you both snuggle up to watch a movie. There’s even an artificial fireplace, to help warm things up on an unseasonably cool summer evening.

The kitchen set up in the Coachmen – Freedom Express LTZ 252RBS is nothing short of impressive and will be a true joy for a couple who loves to cook. The midship kitchen includes a dual basin sink, a large RV refrigerator, a three-burner stove, and a microwave.

There’s also an exterior kitchen with its own reach-in RV refrigerator, slide-out sink station, and a griddle. This lets you cook meals outside to keep from competing with the robust 13,500 BTU rooftop RV air conditioner.

2. Forest River – Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S

Forest River - Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S

  • Length of 25 ft. 11 in
  • Dry Weight of 5,528 lbs.
  • GVWR of 6,974 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 644 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 52.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 60.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 30.0 gallons
  • 35,000 BTU Heater

The Forest River – Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S is a compact travel trailer that has a lot to offer a traveling couple who prioritize creature comforts. This starts with a very thoughtful layout that sets the queen-size master suite at the back, a midship bathroom, and a living room that combines seamlessly with the kitchen.

When you consider that the queen-size master suite has its own TV, it means that you can both have a snuggle area to watch TV. Yet you also have some space with the additional TV in the living room where you each might wants some “Me Time.”

It also helps that the U-shaped dinette converts into a comfortable bed for those times when one of you just won’t stop snoring.

The exterior of the Forest River – Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S is also very well-thought-out. There are two exterior storage bays to let you keep your essential camping gear when you are on the move.

They also serve as hatches to stow your soiled shoes and outdoor gear to help keep the interior of the travel trailer neat and tidy.

You also get a 17-foot long awning, as well as an outside kitchen for those hot days when you don’t want the heat of cooking a meal to compete with the 13,500 BTU RV air conditioning system. Two things that might go understated, but should are benefits with this couples travel trailer is the heating.

This starts with an artificial fireplace in the main living room to help warm you both up on a cool summer night. Then there is also a 35,000 BTU propane furnace that comes as standard.

This makes the Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S one of the best travel trailers for a couple who loves to camp in the mountain or in cool fall weather.

3. Airstream – Flying Cloud 23FB

Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB

  • Length of 23.75 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 4806 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,194 lbs.
  • GVWR of 6,000 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 467 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 37.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 37.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 17.0 gallons
  • 18,000 BTU Heater

Airstream is one of the iconic all-American travel trailer brands . They originally made their name selling models that catered to the needs of couples and small families. So we would be remiss if we didn’t include a model like the Airstream – Flying Cloud 23FB on our list of best travel trailers for a couple.

It has all the styling and looks of the “Classic” Airstream travel trailer, though it doesn’t carry the uber-high price tag. Instead, you get a travel trailer that is cozy for a couple, yet light enough that a robust midsize SUV or full-size SUV can tow it.

Just make sure to compare the gross weight to the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle.

The living quarter at midship combines the kitchen and living room together in one flow-thru layout. The queen-size master suite sits at the front and includes a privacy curtain that you can draw for those times when one of you wants to go to bed early.

The bathroom is stashed in the back and includes a full shower with plenty of elbow room. The six-gallon water heater in the Airstream – Flying Cloud 23FB is a little bit on the small side and probably won’t leave you enough hot water for both of you to take back to back showers.

Though you could very easily remove it to gain more space and install a tankless water heater. While this idea runs a little bit against the classic grain of Airstream’s tradition, it makes sense for a traveling couple and is easy to do.

4. Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T

Coachmen - Apex Tera 16T

  • Dry Weight of 2,860 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 940 lbs.
  • GVWR of 3,800 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 330 lbs.
  • Length of 19.67 ft.

When you take a moment to look at the specifications of the Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T there’s a lot for a traveling couple to like.

Right off the bat, the maximum gross vehicle weight rating of just 3,800-pounds means that a couple can pack this travel trailer to the gills, and it will still be comfortable within the towing capacity of most midsize SUVs .

Though just because it’s light doesn’t mean that this couples-friendly travel trailer is stripped down. While the interior is compact, like you’d expect from a 19-foot long camper, you still get a full-size bed in the rear, a complete dry bath, and a complete kitchen.

There’s even a 6-cubic foot RV absorption refrigerator, which will keep enough food for two people, and a comfortable dinette for you both to eat meals together. The exterior of the Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T is also well-appointed. You can’t go more than a few paces without coming across a storage compartment to let you keep your personal items separate.

There’s even an outdoor camp kitchen that lets one person grill the meat outside while the other prepares the side dishes in the midship interior kitchen.

The fresh and wastewater storage tanks on the 2022 Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T are also very large for a camper this compact and lightweight. With 50 gallons of fresh water and a pair of 35-gallon wastewater tanks, a couple can be supported nicely for several days of boondocking without having to resupply.

5. Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK

Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK

  • Length of 31.33 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 6,140 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 3,252 lbs.
  • GVWR of 9,440 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 640 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 44.0 gallons
  • 30,000 BTU furnace

The Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK is the true heavyweight on this list with a dry weight of 6,140 pounds and an impressive payload capacity of 3,252 pounds. When it comes to towing this means that you and your significant other need a full-size SUV or half-ton pickup to tow this travel trailer with confidence.

Assuming you’ve got the tow vehicle then what you are treated to is one of the best travel trailers for a couple that prioritizes elbow room. Right off the bat, you’ll notice a king-size bed in the front of the Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK.

On each side, there are his and hers nightstands and a wardrobe closet. Below it is a full belly storage system.

Not only does this boost the staggering payload capacity, but it also makes the weight of the travel trailer biased toward the tongue, where you want it. The nicely appointed kitchen sits at the back and has its own second door. This also provides the midship living room with tons of space and perfectly positions the entertainment center opposite a comfortable loveseat.

6. Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB

Dutchmen - Coleman Rubicon 1608RB

  • Length of 20.7 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 3846 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 958 lbs.
  • GVWR of 4,840 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 525 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 46.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 28.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 28.0 gallons

The Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB is another one of the best compact lightweight travel trailers for a couple who wants to be able to tow it without investing in a gas-guzzling full-size pickup truck.

Completely empty it only has a dry weight of just 3,880-pounds. Yet it still has enough cargo capacity of up to 980-pounds to let each of you bring all your essential items and camping gear.

The interior of the Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB is cozy, without feeling cramped. There’s a queen-size bed at the front, which sits over a pass-thru storage compartment.

The midship love seat sits opposite the kitchen and entertainment center. There’s a portable indoor/outdoor table that lets you eat a meal together and catch your favorite shows.

In the back, there’s a full-size bathroom, that is connected to the 46-gallon fresh water tank and a pair of 28-gallon wastewater storage tanks.

This gives a couple the capacity to camp off the grid for a day or two, though the Coleman Rubicon 1608RB is probably a better travel trailer for couples who like to stay at an RV park with easy access to resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth it to upgrade the water heater.

One of the biggest complaints you find in a couples travel trailer is that most come with just a 6-gallon hot water heater.

This usually means one person gets a nice hot shower and the other gets a lukewarm shower where the hot water runs out.

Not to mention being short on hot water to wash the dishes. Some travel trailers make it easy to upgrade the hot water heater, though many simply don’t have the available space.

If you both love to take long hot showers, you might want to consider investing in a tankless water heater .

Not only will it give both of you on-demand hot water, but it will also open up more storage space when you remove the old 6-gallon tank.

Do Travel Trailers Under 25 Feet Have King Size Beds?

Many of the best travel trailers for couples end up being under 25-feet long.

This usually gives you a model that you can tow easily with an SUV or a light-duty pickup truck.

Though a compact travel trailer like this typically only offers a queen-size or a full-size bed in the master suite.

If you and your significant other prioritize a king-size bed, you might need to start shopping models that are longer than 25-feet long.

How Much Water Storage Does A Couple People?

The average person staying in an RV who is being conscious about their water consumption will go through about 6 to 7 gallons of water each day.

When you double that up for a couple, you are looking at about 12 to 15 gallons of water per day.

If your travel style has you boondocking off the grid for a typical two-day weekend , you should prioritize travel trailers that have at least a 25 to 30-gallon fresh water storage tank and matching grey water tank.

Which RV Trailer Is Right For You And Your Partner?

There are a lot of great travel trailers for couples on the market today.

Finding the best one for you and your significant other will depend on your travel style, as well as how much elbow room you both need.

Of course, you also need to factor in your tow vehicle to make sure you can safely pull the travel trailer you prioritize.

If you have an SUV and you want a camper that’s easy to tow, without having to upgrade your vehicle then the Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB and the Coachmen – Apex Tera 16T might be the best travel trailer to meet your needs.

Both are lightweight and compact when you drive down the road, without being cramped when you park up at your campsite.

If you and your significant other love to spread out, and you have a full-size pickup truck with the horsepower to pull it, then the Cruiser RV – Radiance R-25RK might be the best travel trailer to meet your needs.

Not only does it have an impressively wide-open interior, but you also get a king-size bed with his and hers wardrobe closets.

5 Best Travel Trailers For Couples

Published on March 28th, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on January 24th, 2023

couple with teardrop camper wonder about the best travel trailers for couples

When our son went off to college, my wife and I decided to travel the country. We researched the best travel trailer for couples like us, and discovered these top 5 campers. Each model has its own strengths and weaknesses. All come in various price ranges.

Our Criteria For Best Travel Trailer for Couples

I’ve been researching campers suitable for couples for a while now. Tammy and I differ somewhat on what we want. Here’s what we can agree on:

Most of our travels are going to be just the two of us. We don’t need lots of space.

Our goal was a travel trailer less than 25-feet in length preferably closer to 20.

We also don’t want to buy a truck just to tow the camper. It had to be a lightweight trailer with a GVWR of 4,000 or less. This weight limit allows our full-size SUV to tow the trailer comfortably.

The travel trailer needed to have a bathroom with a separate toilet and shower. This is known in the industry as a dry bath. We both dislike the ones where the shower head hangs over a special type of toilet. That’s called a wet bath. Yuk!

At minimum, it needs a queen-sized bed. At home, we have a king-sized bed so we are used to having lots of space between us. A full-sized bed would be too uncomfortable.

For eating, we wanted a small dinette.

It also needed a nice galley. And hopefully a residential refrigerator.

Our last need was that it could sleep more than a couple. Our two granddaughters will soon be able to go on trips with us. We wanted to make sure they have a place to sleep indoors.

There was one final item we wanted. It was not a deal-breaker, but really nice to have. That’s the Azdel composite panels. You can read this article and learn why we think having Azdel panels in your travel trailer is a  good thing.

Lance 1575 Travel Trailer – Our Top Pick Best Travel trailers for Couples

The Lance 1575 fit our search criteria perfectly as the best travel trailer for couples. It is not the least expensive of the 5 travel trailers we researched. But it offers a tremendous amount of value, has an excellent floor plan, beautiful design, and hopefully reliability as well.

This lightweight travel trailer has all the things an RVing couple needs. What we especially like about the Lance 1575 is the separate shower and toilet, a comfortable dinette, and they still manage to fit a queen-sized bed and a well-designed galley.

For RVing couples, the Lance Camper 1575 is hard to beat.

Lance travel trailer for couples

The Lance 1575 has an overall length of 20 1/2 feet, and a width of 84 and 3/4 inches. It easily sleeps 4 people (my wife and I and our 2 granddaughters). Interior height is roomy at 78-inches.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is 3,500 pounds making it very light and allowing it to be towed with a full-size SUV. For example, the Ford Explorer can tow up to 5ooo lbs depending on the towing package. The Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7200 lbs also depending on the towing package.

Construction is aluminum-framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior walls are Azdel which you can read about here . The floor and ceiling are insulated laminate. You get aluminum wheels, an exterior wash station, manual tongue, and stabilizer jacks, and Thermopane tinted windows.

Inside Features of the Lance 1575

Lance 1575 floor plan

Inside you will find a 5-cubic foot refrigerator which is a good size for us. The range is a 3-burner stainless with cover, a stainless steel hood with light, fan, and backsplash. The bathroom is equipped with a tub and shower combination, and the toilet is a marine toilet with a foot pedal. In the bedroom, you will find a queen-size mattress with a pillow-top and LED reading lights.

Lance offers several options on equipment that we will be considering. The A/C unit is definitely one of them since we will be using the travel trailer in hot climates. There are 3 Coleman models to choose from. In addition, you can purchase a backup camera, solar panel, and 28-inch 12-volt TV.

An electric-powered 12-foot awning is also offered that has LED lighting, and a keyless entry system with a key Fob is also a feature of this camper.

The final option we will consider is the built-in microwave for those days when we would rather not cook a full meal.

What Does the Best Trailer for Couples Cost?

Pricing for the Lance 1575 starts at around $37,500 MSRP. Not inexpensive by any means but we believe this is going to be the perfect travel trailer for us.

Though the Lance 1575 travel trailer is our preferred model it is not the only one that is good for couples. We found 4 other travel trailers that provide couples with all the amenities they will need, assuming your criteria are the same as ours. Before we dive into the other 4 models let us tell you what we wanted.

Lance overall makes excellent travel trailers. We consider Lance one of the best travel trailer brands in the market . However, just like any other travel trailer, it has its issues with quality, though not as bad as some other brands we have research.

Here is a photo of the Lance 1575 interior. see why we fell in love with it?

Lance 1575 Best Travel Trailer for Couples

Runner-Ups of the Best Trailers For Couples

Let’s take a look at the 4 other travel trailers we think are the best travel trailers or couples or retirees who don’t require lots of space.

Winnebago Minnie Drop

We previously took a look at the Winnebago Minnie Drop right here . The Minnie Drop has a lot of going for it, including a price of about $20,000, a roomy interior, it is lightweight and comes in a variety of color and graphics choices. Some models have a queen-sized bed, pull-out outdoor kitchen, and even bunk beds.

What we personally did not like about the Minnie Drop is that the model we were interested in has a shower/toilet combination or wet bath. That to me was not a big deal but to my wife, it was a deal killer.

Other than our own personal dislike for the wet-bath, the Minnie Drop is an excellent travel trailer for couples and retirees who want a compact, room, lightweight, and reliable travel trailer.

Airstream Nest (No Longer Manufactured)

The Airstream Nest is another one of the travel trailers we have covered on our site. You can read all about the history and features of the Airstream Nest . When it comes to a beautifully designed fiberglass body travel trailer the Nest is hard to beat.

The exterior and interior are just plain beautiful. The panoramic window along the rear is stunning and adds an impactful visual element to both the interior and exterior. The color and fabric are well-thought-out and have a very stylish and distinctive look.

It is designed with a rear door that creates an interior that feels roomy. But just like the Minnie Drop it has a wet bath, a deal killer for my wife. For me, it was not just the wet bath but the hefty price tag. The Nest comes in at $45,900 to start. This is well outside our budget. Don’t get me wrong the Nest is well worth the price. But for our limited budget, it was not.

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup

Cute, lightweight, and with several very nice floor plans the Cherokee Wolf Pup was another model we research that you might want to consider. It comes in 6-floor plans, two of which are toy haulers.  The floor plan we preferred is the 16FQ.

This floor plan comes with a queen-sized bed, separate shower and toilet, and dinette.  Overall we really like the Cherokee Wolf Pup and for couples, this is an excellent travel trailer. My wife and I were split on this one as she liked it quite a bit but for me, the deciding factor was not having Azdel composite panels. Call me picky, but if I can avoid unnecessary maintenance later, I’m all in.

Oliver Travel Trailer Legacy Elite

Oliver Travel Trailers makes the Oliver Legacy Elite, a single axle 18-feet 5-inch all fiberglass body travel trailer. The Oliver travel trailer was initially my first choice for couples travel trailer but failed in one area that the Lance 1575 did not. The Legacy Elite has a fold-down bed. In other words, the wrap-around dinette converts to a bed. That I did not like as much as having a separate queen-sized bed and dinette

Though heavier than some other models on this page, the Legacy has a GVWR of 5,000 lbs, it is still manageable with a full-sized SUV.

It includes many, and I mean many standard features making it a very capable and comfortable lightweight travel trailer.

Overall Oliver makes an excellent travel trailer and both models in their line-up get excellent reviews. Though it’s a travel trailer not suited for my wife and me it could very well be suited for you. So do take the time to look at them a little deeper.

Best Travel Trailers for Couples Conclusion

Whether you like the Lance, like we do, or not choosing a travel trailer for you and your significant other is still a very personal choice. We recommend you do your research, visit dealerships, or RV shows to actually see and feel the various type of travel trailers. Whether you are a young couple, a retired couple, or simply need a small, lightweight travel trailer we are sure there is one out there for you.

You do not have to sleep in your travel trailer all cramped up due to a small bed. There are many models of travel trailers that have king-sized beds as a standard feature or as an option.

When looking for the best travel trailers for couples keep in mind your budget and your needs. There are plenty of old and new lightweight travel trailers to choose from. Take your time and do your research.

The 15 Best Travel Trailers for 2024

Traveling no longer means having to step foot in a frenzied airport. In fact, there’s never been a better time to go camping. With the right travel trailer, you can easily leave the city behind without having to deal with anyone other than your nearest and dearest. Today’s featured-packed luxury caravans are nothing like those you were ferried around in as a kid, either. Not only do they look good, but they’re packed with enough premium features that you’ll feel right at home, no matter where you are.

We’re also at the point where there’s a trailer for practically every kind of camper, regardless of what vehicle they drive (including the most notorious EV out there, the  Tesla Cybertruck ). Before picking yours, you’ll need to identify what kind of travel trailer will best meet your camping needs, though. If you’re in the market for luxury caravan, there are three options to consider:

Types of Travel Trailers

Classic travel trailer.

The classic travel trailer has been the go-to pick for adventurers and families for decades for a reason. Stretching anywhere from 20 to 30 feet in length, these vehicles cram in everything you need while you’re away from home, including a bedroom, kitchenette, dining area that can be converted into another sleeping area, and a bathroom. You will need a full-size SUV or heavy-duty truck for towing and a power source once you get to your destination—although solar-assisted power systems may allow for temporary off-the-grid operation—but if you can find both you’re ready to camp in comfort.

Pros: Comes equipped with everything you need and can sleep a large group of people Cons: You’ll need something to tow it and keep it running.

Fifth Wheel

The Fifth Wheel is like a standard trailer, only bigger and better. These mammoth vehicles can stretch up to 45 feet in length and have a hitch that mounts onto the center of the bed of the towing vehicle (which makes for a smoother and more comfortable ride). All that space is put to good use too. Your average fifth wheel is likely to include full-size kitchen, a full-size dining and entertainment area, a full-size bedroom or two, and a full-size bathroom. What more could you need on a camping trip, aside from a power source to keep everything running?

Pros: So well-stocked that they are basically smooth-riding homes on wheels. Cons: You’ll need something really big to tow it and off-the-grid functionality with be limited at best.

Micro Trailer

As the name implies, micro trailers are just like standard travel trailers only smaller. Much smaller, in fact, with few measuring more than 14 feet end to end. The pint-size footprint (and low curb weight) of these caravans means that they’re usually only large enough to sleep two adults, and some key features, like a kitchenette or bathroom, are either done away completely with or moved to the outside of the vehicle. What they lack in features, they more than make up for in convenience. Not only are micro campers easier to maneuver and park, but they can even towed by smaller vehicles like a crossover or even an EV.

Pros: Easier to maneuver than larger caravans and can be towed by a greater range of vehicles. Cons: Can rarely sleep more than two adults and may lack features that some consider vital.

With all this in mind, here are 16 travel trailers from the ultra-luxurious (Living Vehicle HD24) to the off-road-ready (Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event) that you’ll want to take on your next road trip.

Our Best Travel Trailer Picks

Best overall: living vehicle hd24, best for luxury lovers: bowlus endless highways performance edition, best for off-road enthusiasts: mammoth overland extinction level event, best to live in: airstream globetrotter, best for entertaining: w2 romotow t8, best for going off-the-grid: escapod topo2, best for tech obsessives: retreat cabin and ozxcorp’s erv, best for stylish trips: eriba touring 820, best for families: land ark drake, best for ev owners: pebble flow, best for cybertruck owners: living vehicle cybertrailer, best for beginners: colorado teardrops boulder, best for couples: hunter nature raptor xc.

Best for Roughing It: Taxa Mantis

Best under 5,000 pounds: happier camper hc1.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle HD24

If you want a better understanding of how far travel trailers have come over the decades, just look at the Living Vehicle lineup. The Santa Barbara-based company’s boxy trailers are basically mini apartments you can take with you on the road. Our favorite might be the new HD24, which is far from the company’s biggest offering, but comes with all the amenities you could need at the campground—and then some.

The all-electric model, which starts at $299,995, may measure only 24 feet, but its minimalist interior still has more than enough for a bedroom, kitchen, entertainment area, and a bathroom with a dedicated shower. One particularly clutch feature is a five-by-eight-foot multi-purpose space that can be used as an office, guest room, or laundry room. If that wasn’t enough, the top-of-the-line Pro variant has a solar-assisted power system that can keep the trailer running for up to a month off the grid.

The Living Vehicle HD24 entertainment area

Special Features:   —Trailer can be configured to include a laundry room, office, or guest room. —Interior has a clean minimalist look and comes packed with premium amenities. —Range-topping Pro version’s power system produces enough energy for 30 days of off-the-grid living,

The Bowlus Endless Highways Performance Edition from the side

It may not be the most famous shiny caravan maker—that would be Airstream—but Bowlus is the company that gave us the first riveted travel trailer. The company, which was revived in 2014, knows not to mess with a good thing, so its well-regarded trailers—like our favorite, the  Endless Highways Performance Edition —look just like those it produced in the 1930s, only bigger and with better materials (think: alclad aluminum for the exterior and birchwood for the interior).

Despite its classic look, the $225,000 trailer has all the conveniences you expect in 2022, including heat and air-conditioning systems, a WiFi modem and plenty of outlets for charging all your smart devices. Best of all, though, might be a lithium iron phosphate that gives you the ability to live off the grid for two peaceful weeks. If you’re an animal lover, there’s also the  Terra Firma , which features a bunch of Fido-friendly features like a built-in food bowl, pet bed and remote temperature control system.

Inside the Bowlus Volterra

Special Features:  —Thee’s a double-sided indoor galley and an outdoor cooking area with electric and propane outlets. —The hotel-style shower has teak flooring and seating. —Lithium iron phosphate power system can keep the entire trailer running for up to two weeks.

A front 3/4 view of the Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event

Mammoth Overland’s latest model is a burly off-road trailer designed to withstand anything it encounters in nature. The appropriately named Extinction Level Event (ELE) rides on a set of chunky all-terrain tires and has an angular aluminum body reinforced with steel armor and skid plates. If that doesn’t sound like enough, you can upgrade to Level 3 bullet-proof armor. There’s also a built-in bear spray system too, for added security. The ELE, which starts at $67,000, is pretty compact since it’s a tear-drop trailer, but it can comfortably sleep two and has an integrated workstation inside its cabin. There’s also a swing-out kitchenette in the back for cooking.

The Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event's swing-out kitchenette

Special Features:   —Comes with a built-in bear spray system and is available with bullet-proof armor. —Despite its compact size, the interior cabin still has room for a built-in workstation. —The swing-out kitchenette isn’t big, but has everything you need to cook a delicious meal.

Airstream Globetrotter

One brand leaps to mind when most of us think about travel trailers—Airstream. Its iconic aluminum-sided caravans have been instrumental in popularizing road trips and  camping  in the US for decades. One need only look at the company’s  Globetrotter  model to see why: In addition to looking beautiful, the silver-covered caravan is packed with creature comforts to keep you traveling comfortably. It’s not the brand’s largest model—that would be the flagship  Classic —but it’s available with one of six different floor plans, each of which has room for a spacious entertainment area (that can sleep up to four adults).

Inside you’ll find a full-featured kitchen, half-bathroom, shower and sizable bedroom with either a queen-sized bed or two twins. As you would expect from Airstream, the amenities are top-rate, too, like Franke faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, stainless steel appliances, Quietstream climate control system and multiple LG LED TVs. The Globetrotter starts at $120,000. If it doesn’t fit the bill, the brand has plenty of other models to choose from, including collaboration editions like the  extra-homey Pottery Barn Edition  or their  ultra-rare Supreme edition .

Airstream Globetrotter

Special Features: —There are different floor plans to choose from, each of which features a full kitchen, half bathroom and dedicated shower. —The Quietstream climate control system barely makes a peep, even when the heater or A/C is running. —A built-in canopy provides shade when you want to spend time outside.

The W2 Romotow T8

Good things come to those who wait. More than a decade after it was first announced, the Romotow T8 is finally available to order. The 30.5-foot caravan, which was designed by New Zealand-based architecture and design firm W2, has two main components—a fixed chassis and a smaller living space that fits just inside of it. When the $268,500 trailer is parked, the cabin slides out at the touch of a button and can be rotated 90 degrees like a swiveling USB stick. When rotated like this, the hydraulic-powered chassis can then be used as a patio. While this unique design may be the vehicle’s main selling point, its interior cabin comes with all the features you need and has enough room for six adults.

Inside the W2 Romotow T8

Special Features:   —Unique rotating design is unlike anything else currently on the trailer market. —The living area is large enough to sleep up to six adults. — Hydraulic patio comes with an integrated deck set.

Escapod Topo2

The  Escapod Topo2  is a trailer for anyone looking to take their camping trip off road with minimal fuss. The brand’s update of the classic teardrop trailer is an off-road-friendly model without any of the bulk. Unlike most of the trailers on this list, Escapod’s bedroom and kitchen area are separated from one another. The dedicated sleeping area has room for a queen-size mattress and is equipped with a stargazer window so you can really take in the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. The galley, meanwhile, is only accessible from outside the $39,500 trailer, but has ample counter space for meal prep and cooking. Both sections get their power from a VPR 4EVER lithium ion battery with some solar panels to help keep things running smoothly and efficiently.

Escapod Topo2

Special Features: —Exterior is made from a single-piece of composite fiberglass that is rugged and weather-resistant. —Laser-cut tube steel frame should last for years. —Bedroom’s stargazer window offers up a beautiful view of your surroundings.

The Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp's ERV Electric Camper

It was only a matter of time until the  electric revolution  made its way to the world of trailers and campers.  Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp’s ERV  is a rugged trailer that also happens to run entirely on battery power. Roof-mounted solar panels provide juice for a 14.3-kWh lithium battery that keeps the trailer’s many appliances running. And while the trailer is perfectly equipped for some off-road fun, thanks to a specially tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, it also packs all of the comforts of a luxe hotel room inside, including a bathroom, spacious seating area and master bedroom suite with a king-sized bed and closets. But the true highlight may be the $75,000 caravan’s full-size kitchen, which features an induction cooktop, fridge and washing machine. There’s also a Weber electric barbecue and slow cooker for making your meals outdoors.

The interior of the ERV electric cabin

Special Features: —Solar panels and 14.3-kWh battery power the trailer and let you go off grid. —A specially tuned suspension and large all-terrain tires let you go off-road. —The primary bedroom has enough room for a king-size bed and its own closets.

Eriba Touring 820

Are you looking for an aluminum-sided trailer that looks like more than just another Airstream or Bowlus’s rip-off? If so, the  Eriba Touring 820  might fit the bill. The company’s top-of-the-line caravan updates the classic silver bullet look with a retro-futuristic shape and details. Even more impressive, though, is the 27-foot-trailer’s interior. The company has packed it full of luxury amenities like a sizable, leather-covered lounge area (that can be converted into a bed), customizable mood lighting and a surprisingly fashionable bathroom. The true highlight, though, is a bedroom with a large panoramic window that offers up a gorgeous views of your surroundings. That’s good, too, since you might not actually want to leave the $88,500 trailer.

Eriba Touring 820

Special Features: —The kitchen has a mini wine cellar for keeping your best bottles at the ready. —The leather-upholstered entertainment area can be converted into an additional sleeping area at night. —Adjustable mood lighting will help you feel at home no matter where you are.

The Land Ark Drake

Almost more of a portable house than a trailer, the  Land Ark Drake  basically lets you take all the comforts of home on the road. The gigantic, yet stylish, two-level, 357-square-feet trailer can comfortably sleep seven adults. Stark and modern on the outside, the trailer features an equally clean white-washed pine and black metal decorated interior. Across its two floors, it has room for a full-sized kitchen, living room and bathroom (which includes a bathtub), along with two loft bedrooms and an office which can also be converted to a sleeping area. Its $139,000 starting price may sound a lot for a trailer, but for a two-story house on wheels it’s not that bad.

Inside the The Land Ark Drake

Special Features: —The two-level design means you have 357-square-feet of space. —Downstairs bathroom includes a tub for when you need to take a relaxing soak. —It has a primary bedroom and two loft-style sleeping areas.

A front 3/4 view of the Pebble Flow

There are plenty of EV-friendly travel trailers on the market at this point, but none are nicer to an electric powertrain than the Pebble Flow, which starts at $109,000. The futuristic vehicle is available with an optional propulsion that includes two electric motors—one situated on each wheel—to help make sure its 6,200-pound weight isn’t eating up all your battery-powered vehicle’s range. That’s far from the Flow’s only forward-thinking feature though. The trailer also comes with an “Instacamp” system that can be used to park the vehicle and set up camp (which includes leveling out the vehicle, deploying its staircase, and turning on the lights). The unique feature can also be triggered remotely via Pebble’s smartphone app.

Inside the Pebble Flow

Special Features:   —An optional propulsion system means it can even be towed by EVs. —Unique “Instacamp” system allows you to park the vehicle remotely via the company’s smartphone app. — Solar-assisted battery pack produces enough power for a week of off-the-grid living.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle CyberTrailer being towed by a Tesla Cybertruck

Elon Musk has been promising camping accessories for the Tesla Cybertruck since the get-go, but any official camper shell or trailer is likely years away at this point. Fortunately, Living Vehicle, the maker of our current favorite caravan, has stepped in to fill the void. The company has just unveiled the CyberTrailer, a new model with a design inspired by the battery-powered pickup. The caravan is almost certainly the most striking entry on this list, for better or for worse, but it also has a solar-assisted power system that produces more than enough juice to keep the entire vehicle running off the grid. More importantly, for Cybertruck (and other EV) owners, it also allows the trailer to be used as a mobile charging station for any battery-powered vehicle or plug-in hybrid.

The Living Vehicle CyberTrailer from the front

Special Features: —A bold design inspired by Tesla’s pickup that also offers excellent aerodynamic performance. —A solar-assisted system that will keep the trailer and all its features running off-the-grid. —Can be towed by pickups and SUVs other than the Cybertruck, including other EVs.

Colorado Teardrops Boulder travel trailer

There are EV-friendly trailers and then there’s  Colorado Teardrops’s Boulder . Not only is the company’s latest designed to be towed by a battery-powered SUV or truck, it can also charge your EV’s battery. That ability comes courtesy a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a built-in DC fast charger that will give you some much needed peace of mind out on the open road. At the very least, it gives you the freedom to come up with a route centered around sights instead of charging stations. Aside from this very vital feature, the compact caravan has everything two adults and two children need to live off the grid for a for a few days, including a comfortable queen-sized mattress, two bunk beds (for the kids), an enclosed kitchenette and an optional climate control system. The $55,000 trailer also comes in a variety of two-tone color schemes that all look pretty sharp.

Colorado Teardrops Boulder travel trailer

Special Features: —Doesn’t just ease the burden on your EV’s battery; it can charge it, too. —A unique bunk-bed design creates room for four people to sleep (two adults and two children). —The enclosed kitchenette has plenty of counter space.

Hunter Nature Raptor XC

A big trailer can be a godsend on the campground, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends. The problem, of course, is getting the hulking vehicle there. No matter how experienced the driver, maneuvering a large caravan can be very tricky. Luckily there are trailers like  Hunter Nature’s Raptor XC . The brand’s angular model looks compact but features a pull-out section that just about doubles the size of its interior. When it’s fully extended you’ll have more than enough room for a dedicated living area, kitchen and bedroom. This will come in handy if there’s more than two in your traveling party, too. That’s because the $44,000 trailer’s entertainment area can easily be converted into an additional sleeping area at night.

The Hunter Nature Raptor XC's main living area and slide-out bedroom

Special Features: —An expanding segment turns this trailer into a multi-room cabin. —The bedroom has a large skylight so you can see the stars at night. —A spacious lounge can be converted into an additional sleeping area if you need more room.

Best for Design Obsessives: X-Cabin300

The X-Cabin300 travel trailer

Silver trailers don’t all need to be bullet-shaped as nice as the classic Airstream may look. Just take a gander at the X-Cabin300. The all-aluminum vehicle has a boxy shape that looks both classic and modern. The Japanese-made caravan is compact, but comes with four different interior layouts designed to meet your varied needs (it can even be used as a food truck). The $50,000 trailer is smaller than most—it measures just seven feet tall, seven feet wide, and 15 feet long—and only tips the scales at 1,650 pounds, which means a compact SUV can even tow it.

X-Cabin300 travel trailer with a canopy attached

Special Features:   —A refreshing spin on the classic all-aluminum travel trailer. —Available with four different interior layouts. —Small and light enough to be towed by a compact SUV.

The exterior of the Taxa Mantis

It can be hard to find a trailer that fits everyone’s needs, but the  Taxa Mantis  comes close. Its no-nonsense design means it fits with nearly anyone’s style. Thanks to a pop-up roof section, ingenious use of space and plenty of storage compartments, the Mantis has all the room you and your friends and family need to camp in comfort, which can be crucial on longer trips. It’s also got all the necessary features, including a bathroom with a built-in shower, water heater, kitchenette and 8,000 BTU air conditioner. The trailer, which starts at $46,000, is ideal for off-roading, but there’s a  special Overland edition  if you want something even more rugged.

Inside the Taxa Outdoor Mantis 5.1 Overland

Special Features: —A pop-up roof means you don’t have to sleep in the kitchen if you don’t want to. —There’s a built-in water heater and climate control system with a 8,000 BTU air conditioner. —It comes with a built-in canopy for outdoor hangouts.

The exterior of the Happier Camper HC1

Imagine if you didn’t need a truck or SUV to tow your trailer. You don’t if the caravan in question is Happier Camper’s compact  HC1 . The Los Angeles-based outfit’s smallest model is as light as they come, with a dry weight of just 1,100 pounds, meaning it can be towed by practically any car, even a modern-day Mini Cooper. It features a semi-modular interior designed by Adaptiv that can be customized to fit your camping style—components snap in like Legos—with either a full kitchen or enough sleeping room for up to five people. You can even add solar panels if you want to go off the grid. The $34,450 trailer’s old-school design is also sure to stand out on practically any campground. Even better, no pickups needed.

Inside the Happier Camper HC1

Special Features: —At only 1,100 pounds, it can be towed by just about any car. —The semi-modular floor plan allows you to arrange the interior to accommodate your camping style. —The larger rear hatch opens up space when you are entertaining.

Why we recommend the Palomino Puma travel trailer:  Palomino’s Puma is no stranger to our top 5 lists, but the reason it made the top of the list here is due to its expansive variety of 43 floorplans, a good amount of which are within the 2-4 sleeping capacity that a couple would love. You have many options, both in terms of layout and in terms of actual physical traits. We recommend taking a look at the  Puma 31FKRK  and the  Puma 32RKTS .

As far as features go, a few of the features are present in some floorplans while absent or slightly different in the others. Some of the standard amenities that you will see are radius baggage doors and a jack knife sofa. Most of its floorplans have a sleeping capacity of 3-4 people, making it ideal for couples, but at the same time it is 20-25 feet long, giving you a spacious interior. We recommend checking out the  Flagstaff Micro-Lite 19FD  and the  Flagstaff Micro-Lite 25FBLS .

It is hard to find anything negative about the Micro-Lite’s features. From the full aluminum frame and the radius roof on the outside to the decorative valances and the on premium speakers the inside, there’s nothing you’re missing out on. You’ll also be able to upgrade to a 15,000 BTU A/C over the 13,500 BTU variant, which will be a great feature for those traveling in the south or just throughout the summer.

travel trailers for couples

View All Forest River  Rockwood Mini Lite Travel Trailer Floorplans!

Why we recommend the Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite travel trailer:  Another amazing travel trailer from Forest River’s stables is the Rockwood Mini Lite, which features 18 floorplans, and many are fit for couples always on their way somewhere. It’s also fairly lightweight as most of its floorplans are under 5,000 pounds and arrow d 20-25 feet long footprint. We suggest you check out the  Rockwood Mini Lite 1909S  and the  Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S  in particular.

The Rockwood Mini Lite doesn’t disappoint as it covers every feature you could expect from a decent travel trailer, and then some! Some of these features include (but are not limited to) a free standing high pressure table, 44-inch family dinette, power awning, outside grill prep, and a lockable bed latch system. If you wish to add more to the travel trailer, it has many options–ranging from a mounted 24-inch TV to a 15,000 BTU upgraded air conditioner as well!

  • Laminated fiberglass sidewalls
  • Outside grill prep

#4. Heartland North Trail Travel Trailer

Relax, entertain, unwind..

travel trailers for couples

View All Heartland  North Trail Travel Trailer Floorplans!

Why we recommend the Heartland North Trail travel trailer:  If you’re looking for travel trailers that have additional space than the other choices, then the North Trail should be perfect for you. Many of its floorplans are over 30 feet and still have a sleeping capacity of 4, making it one of the travel trailers with the best space to sleeping capacity ratio. We recommend checking out the  North Trail 21 FBS  and the  North Trail 32 RETS King .

In terms of features, we found the North Trail to be a very impressive unit. It’s got designer accent walls, a monitor panel in the bathroom, decorative glass inserts and many other features you don’t usually find in a travel trailer in this price range. You can upgrade this camper when you’re ready to. You have the option to choose a different ‘package’ that the company offers, along with some standalone options too! All in all, you can understand why we believe Heartland makes one of the most quality travel trailers out there, especially for couples on the go!

  • Dual ducted 13,500 BTU A/C
  • Etched panel interior doors
  • Friction hinge on every door

#5. Forest River R-Pod Travel Trailer

Your featherlight weekend camper.

travel trailers for couples

View All Forest River  Forest River R-Pod Travel Trailer Floorplans!

Why we recommend Forest River R-Pod travel trailer:  It might seem like we’re overdoing it with travel trailers from Forest River, but the fact that the R-pod is one of the smallest, most featherlight travel trailers gives it the great credit it deserves. If it’s just the two of you, the size will be perfect! It can also handle 2 more people, having floorplans with bunk beds if you’ve decided to bring friends along.

Don’t let the small size convince you that Forest River has cut corners on features. While we liked the bunkhouse on the  R-Pod RP-172  and the U-Shaped Dinette on the  R-Pod RP-190 , they otherwise share the same features. You also have the option to add a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, a convection microwave, a 24-inch flat screen LED TV among many other features, making this a versatile travel trailer as well!

  • 9 different floor plans available
  • Water heater by-pass system
  • Air conditioner ready
  • Fire extinguisher with smoke detector
  • Ground fault protected electrical circuit
  • 55 amp converter w/ charger

6 Lightweight Travel Trailers That are Perfect for Couples

best couple travel trailer

My husband and I have been on the search for the perfect travel trailer for almost a year. After many nights of researching on manufacturing websites, RV forums, and watching thousands (seriously, we think it’s about 3,000) YouTube videos we realized… The perfect travel trailer doesn’t exist.

However, here are a few that come pretty darn close. Here’s the parameters I’m going by – as this is what we preferred:

  • Walk around queen bed (RV size or residential)
  • Separate refrigerator and freezer
  • Max total length of 24 feet
  • Max dry weight 4500 pounds
  • Dry bath (separate shower/toilet)
  • Good storage
  • No bunks/bunkbeads
  • Not a toyhauler
  • Under $20,000

Here are a few trailers that we strongly considered while looking for our new travel trailer.

1. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1800RB

Keystone is owned by Thor Industries, which also owns Airstream, Jayco, Dutchmen, and more. The 1800 RB (RB = rear bathroom) features a queen murphy bed which allows for a walk-around bed, while still keeping the coach at a smaller length. This is an affordable camper, with lots of storage options.

Pros: Campsite dinette, big rear bathroom with good storage, outside shower, dual propane tanks, enclosed underbelly (this is more important that you may think), outside shower.

Cons: No side tables/storage next to sofa, no black tank flush, murphy bed has to be supported at the base, tri-fold mattress

  • Length: 21 feet, 4 inches
  • Height: 10 feet, 5 inches
  • Width: 8 feet
  • Dry weight: 3400lbs (approx)

2. Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 18MT

Forest River is another big name manufacturer of RV and travel trailers. This Grey Wolf model is a step above an entry model, with some really nice features. First, it has an awesome outdoor kitchen with sink, mini-fridge, and ice maker. This model is also a murphy bed, but boasts a lot more storage than some of its counterparts.

Pros: Campsite dinette, bathroom has mirrors and storage, amazing outdoor kitchen and shower, backsplash, storage rack on back.

Cons: The bed has a funky set up and it’s a bit on the heavier side.

  • Length: 23 feet, 5 inches
  • Height: 10 feet, 6 inches
  • Dry weight: 4200lbs (approx)

3. Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108FBS

Winnebago is one of the best brands you’ll find when shopping for a travel trailer. They are well made, have the best materials, and some of the best warranties in the business. This 2108FBS is a beautiful trailer (and it’s more on the expensive side, but you can find it for less than $20K new if you try hard).

Pros: Easy to tow at 7 feet wide, lots of beautiful windows, privacy curtain, over and under bed storage (separate from passthrough storage), backsplash, framed doors, enclosed belly, huge awning, cross breeze at sleeping area.

Cons: It’s a bit more expensive and harder to find on lots. Outside showers are optional and not on all units.

  • Length: 21 feet, 11 inches
  • Width: 7 feet
  • Dry weight: 3980lbs (approx)

4. Forest River Salem Cruise Light 171RBXL

Another model from Forest River – this time from the Salem line. The 171RBXL is a murphy bed model with a campside dinette. If you’re a weekend warrior, or just starting out – you may want to check out this travel trailer. It’s very affordable (I’ve seen new models at $12,500). It’s very spacious, has a lot of accessible storage, and is much roomier than it looks. I would just look into swapping out the fan for a Fantastic and making sure to reinforce any leaks in the underbelly.

Pros: Super affordable entry level camper, lots and lots of storage space that’s easy to access, shower doors.

Cons: Underbelly not enclosed, no outside shower, and weak shower/exhaust fan.

  • Length: 22 feet, 5 inches
  • Height: 10 feet, 1 inches
  • Dry weight: 3800lbs (approx)

5. Sunset Park Sunray 199

Sunset Park Sunray trailers have that vintage look and are so Instagram friendly. The trailer offers a bit of separation from the sleeping and living area.

Pros: Comes in awesome vintage look/feel, large dinette than turns into a bed for 2 people, outside shower.

Cons: Not a ton of inside storage.

  • Length: 21 feet, 5 inches
  • Width: 7 feet, 1 inch
  • Dry weight: 3000 (approx)

6. Forest River R-Pod 192

R-Pods are known for the cute frog (Forest River Owner Group) on the side of the coach. While the R-Pod started as a teardrop trailer, newer models have expanded by a few feet and boast full-size refrigerators. The 192 model has a murphy bed for extra space while still keeping the cozy look and feel of a traditional R-Pod. Also, check out the 195 and 196 that have similar chassis.

Pros: Massive campsite dinette window, comes standard with TV, large pantry, lots of storage, exterior kitchen with spray hose, pet latch, residential queen.

Cons: Folding bed, shower lacks tile/coating, no mirror/med cabinet in bathroom, is not backup camera ready.

  • Length: 22 feet, 2 inches
  • Height: 9 feet, 10 inches
  • Width: 8feet

Other trailers to consider…

Like I said, we watched a LOT of videos. Here are some other models to consider that did not meet our specifications, but are models others may consider if you have a higher budget, can pull more weight, or a smaller refrigerator is OK.

In no particular order:

  • Keystone Outback 210URS
  • Apex 213 RDS
  • Venture RV Sonic 231VRK
  • Cougar 22RBS
  • GeoPro 19FD
  • Keystone Passport 216RD
  • Airstream International Serenity 23FB

We can’t wait to start our travel trailer adventures. You can follow along here on the blog, or on YouTube , Twitter, and Instagram .

We really liked that model. In truth, the layout of the 22rbs would prob be better for us — but the weight was just a bit too much and we’d have to upgrade our TV.

We are in the process of deciding on a couples lite trailer and have been researching the floorplans etc. online. One of the items on our wish list is appropriate counter space, which seems to be in short supply in most of the units we have looked into. Our one major question from a practical standpoint is this: where on earth do people put their coffee makers and toasters???

October 13, 2021 at 4:17 pm

We use a French press coffee maker ourselves, so we only have it out when using it. And we never used a toaster (just used the convection oven when we needed something toasted). Many people in the 192 add a shelf to the right of the sink. Some even add small carts. But that’s where our pup sleeps – so we make due.

If you’re looking for some of the best travel trailers for full-time living, you’re in the right place. Take it from me, a full-timer living in a 19-foot vintage travel trailer with my partner and dog!

While you may not want to live in a travel trailer as small as mine , there’s no reason why you can’t live full-time in an RV. Life on the road is becoming increasingly popular among many different individuals. Many people do it, whether you’re a young freelancer, retired camping enthusiast, or want to get involved in your local parks system.

Let’s learn about everything you need to know about full-time RV living before we dive into some of the best rigs out there for your lifestyle change. But if you want to skip ahead and just see which travel trailers make the list, you can use the table of contents below or check out this video:

9 Best Travel Trailers To Live In Full Time

Ready to check out the 9 best travel trailers to live in full-time? Here are my top picks for rigs to suit a range of traveling lifestyles.

Best Overall: Jayco Eagle

With so many Jayco models on the market, there’s no struggle in finding the right rig for full-time life on the road, and the Jayco Eagle is a fantastic option. The Eagle stands out for its luxurious touches, large living areas, and dedication to quality hardware, consistent across all five floorplans. While the Eagle only has five available floor plans, the smallest measures 34′ 10″ in length, and the largest 38′ 9″.

These are pretty mighty lengths, especially for RVing newbies, so it may be worth purchasing a smaller trailer to get comfortable towing rather than dive straight into the deep end with the Jayco Eagle! Substantial length, width, and height in a travel trailer can transform the RV living experience so if you’re a pro-tower, don’t shy away!

I like the variety between the floorplans, some have optional theatre seating, half bathrooms, washer-dryer prep, and even large kitchen islands. Speaking of the kitchen, the Eagle has a lot to offer. With the option of a 21 cubic inch residential fridge, a full range and oven combo, and a kitchen island with a double sink, I’m confident I can whip up any meal in this rig and have the correct equipment and ample preparation space.

Jayco campers are known for their interiors as well as their quality construction, and the Eagle follows suit with modern, clean finishings. The option of upgrading to a king bed is possible, and I love that even after this upgrade, there’s still plenty of room to sleep guests elsewhere in the travel trailer. AC transforms comfort on the road and living full-time in a home on wheels, it’s essential to think about the struggles each season throughout the year may bring.

Therefore, I find the two ducted AC units to be a very worthwhile addition to the Eagle, allowing me and even more importantly, my dog to stay cool no matter the temperatures of peak summer. This travel trailer is also built to withstand a vast array of weather scenarios, including lightning!

The Jayco Eagle is perfect for solo RVers wanting lots of space, couples hitting the open road together, or even families, thanks to the sheer volume of storage and numerous sleeping arrangements. Jayco rigs are known for being long-lasting, with Amish-built wooden cabinetry, heavy-duty steel framing, and moisture-resistant walls and insulation, I trust Jayco campers to withstand RVing travels from year to year.

Best For Boondocking: Northwood Arctic Fox North Fork

RVing for me is all about spending as much time in the great outdoors as possible, so having a rig with boondocking capabilities is a must! Northwood’s Arctic Fox North Fork travel trailer. Built for all seasons including cold weather, and various terrain, this travel trailer is ready to go far and wide!  With seven floorplans ranging from 22 feet to 35 feet, it’s easy to find an Arctic Fox to suit the needs of any RVer.

I love having several floorplan options, especially since some layouts offer incredibly spacious kitchen countertops, large walkaround beds, and more for ultimate comfort and functionality. Boondocking ability is high on my list of priorities in any RV I look at, and t his rig was built with off-grid adventuring in mind. Rated for four-season use means no more packing up in winter and waiting for spring to arrive!

Matched with all-terrain tires, a fresh water tank of over 50 gallons, and standard solar power, the Northwood Artic Fox is an off-grid machine! There are additional options available, though these will increase the cost substantially, and since this isn’t the cheapest travel trailer on the market, it’s worth giving any upgrades plenty of thought.

Depending on the layout, it’s potential to add a second AC unit along with more solar panels for enhanced comfort in the height of summer, and more sun-powered electricity generated. There are so many possible upgrades, that it’s hard to keep track and not blow the budget! Other upgrades include an outdoor BBQ grill, a backup camera, holding tank heaters, and even a router.

The kitchen is where this rig really comes to life. Whether boondocking or not, this kitchen is built for full-time living with solid kitchen countertops throughout, a lovely double sink, a full range and oven combo, and an optional residential fridge.

While not too many boondocking features come standard, I like the ability to truly make this rig exactly what you want, at any size you want . It has a lot to offer, including a comprehensive warranty program for all new travel trailers. Check this one out if you are planning on unplugging while on the road!

Best For Senior Couples: Jayco White Hawk

Boasted as a travel trailer made to bring enriched comfort and connection while on the road, the Jayco White Hawk is an awesome choice for the recently retired or senior-age couple looking to live life in an RV.  There are ten floorplans to discover with the White Hawk, the smallest measuring just over 30′ in length and the largest a substantial 38′. Many floor plans offer an abundance of comfortable seating arrangements and personal touches, such as theatre seating and pull-out sofas or bunk beds for the grandkids.

Jayco rigs are built solid, with Azdel walls and a lightweight sturdy frame. Capable of handling all four seasons, the White Hawk is fit to go with additional fiberglass insulation and underbelly heating for sub-zero winter days. There’s an optional second air conditioner able to be installed to further enhance the weather-ready capability of this trailer, and certain layouts even boast an electric fireplace and entertainment system for family entertainment.

For the more adventurous older couple, there’s an outdoor shower and the option to go off-grid with solar mounting capabilities. The interior offers an abundance of comfort, with adjustable dinette seating as well as accommodating walk-around queen beds so I don’t have to worry about waking my partner when I need the toilet during the night!

I would like to see this Jayco rig with a washer and dryer option to make full-time life on the road a little easier, but since it’s possible to purchase a White Hawk with a 50 amp service, maybe one can be installed post-purchase! This rig has a luxurious kitchen area, complete with multiple prep spaces, a full range, and even a kitchen island although this is floorplan-specific.

For accessibility and ease, this travel trailer can be built out with a self-leveling system and stabilizers which takes any stress away from trying to get this trailer level at the campground. You can also expect the White Hawk to come backed with Jayco’s comprehensive and industry-leading warranty just in case any issues arise while adventuring out in the wilderness with your other half!

Best For Young Couples: Winnebago Voyage

Winner of the 2022 Best Travel Trailer of the Year from RV News, the Winnebago Voyage is perfect for the full-time and adventurous young couple. For starters, this rig is affordable, which is no surprise as Winnebago are renowned for manufacturing rigs that don’t break the bank! There’s no sacrificing on features with the Voyage, and with six floorplans to choose from, ranging from 27′ 11″ to 38′ 11″ finding the best-suited layout is a breeze.

Some of the floor plans include bunkhouse sleeping arrangements capable of sleeping 8 people, which is a game-changer for larger families, or young couples who want to purchase a bigger rig initially to cater for a family in the future. Winnebago packs a lot of RV onto a lightweight frame, with no layouts exceeding a GVWR of 10,000 lbs, making the Voyage a great choice for a range of tow vehicles.

The volume of potential options is a big draw for me, with some including theatre seating, washer and dryer prep, queen walk-around beds with the option to upgrade to a king, and ample storage, both inside and out. All of these features scream full-time living to me, and the spacious kitchen is the cherry on top!

Depending on the floorplan, some layouts have a kitchen island, a large range oven combination, and even the option to upgrade to a residential-sized fridge which is something I’d definitely consider! Having great kitchen appliances and a stunning space to cook really helps with inspiration to cook healthy, vibrant meals to keep energized on the road.

The Voyage also has a lot to offer in terms of small touches. It has outdoor speakers perfect for entertaining, a roof ladder for maintenance, fireplaces, and optional RV stabilizing technology . Figuring out RVing for the first time can be daunting, but comforting touches like these not only bring a bit of luxury but help keep the camping experience as smooth as possible.

The Voyage allows the young freelancing couple internet access as well, with a rooftop antenna and WiFi prep. I love being able to stay connected, yet also head off-grid in the Winnebago Voyage thanks to the standard solar setup on the roof. Although upgrading some features is arguably one of the best ways to get the most out of the Voyage, this trailer promises not to disappoint the full-time RV-dweller!

Best Off-Grid: Living Vehicle

Let me be the first one to tell you that a Living Vehicle brand travel trailer doesn’t come cheap . In fact, it may end up costing you the same amount as a small single-family home! However, a lot comes at a high price, and I doubt I’d ever go back to traditional living after exploring one of these innovative, forward-thinking rigs.

All models of Living Vehicle are totally modular, self-sufficient, and technologically advanced. Honestly, I’ve not seen any other rigs like these, and if I had the funds, I’d definitely be investing in one since they have such a low environmental impact and ultimate style. Built for off-grid tech couples or full-time RVers working from their home on wheels, Living Vehicle seem to have thought of everything with their rigs. There’s so much to drool over with this aluminum beauty.

Living Vehicle boasts they built this travel trailer to feel like home, and I think they’ve definitely accomplished this. The four trim choices allow a bit of personalization and the interior features continue to inspire. The spa-style bathroom, fold-down patio space, residential kitchen, and comfortable sleeping areas, all models of Living Vehicle promise to bring tranquility and high-end to the RVing world.

Designed to work off-grid, it’s possible to run the air conditioning all day and night using real-time solar energy thanks to the solar panels on the rig. Living Vehicle don’t just simply manufacture RVs, they create works of art with their campers, and with electric vehicle charging available too, I love that my impact on the natural world can be minimized.

Living Vehicle boasts multiple modular rooms, including bedrooms able to transform into a mobile office or laundry room, an extendable kitchen deck with a movable kitchen island allowing for outdoor cooking, and much, much more. These rigs are designed for off-roading, four-season living, and keeping connected, regardless of location thanks to Bluetooth and WiFi accessories.  Everything comes standard with this rig, and it should, considering the price!

Best Kitchen: Grand Design Reflection

I see Grand Design rigs often while I camp host, and the Reflection has to be a favorite of many campers. I’m a food lover, and nothing inspires me more than preparing dishes in a stunning kitchen like the one inside the Grand Designs Reflection. There are five floorplans to choose from, and each is well-equipped with all the full-time RV amenities needed for a successful time on the road.

All of the travel trailer floor plans feature stunning kitchens, outfitted in a modern black and gray finish, which isn’t something I’ve seen much of in many travel trailers. Most of the kitchens include islands, and any floorplans that don’t, still have ample counter space so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on a residential kitchen.

The stunning interior features don’t end with the kitchen, and I expect them to continue since these trailers have a substantial price tag. However, I do love the theatre seating, sofas, electric fireplace inserts, kitchen pantry storage, living room hutch storage, and washer-dryer prep in the master bedroom as they all bring comfort, functionality, and convenience.

I like the opportunity to add an optional king bed, a second awning, and even dual pane windows to help get the trailer prepared for four-season camping. The additional options don’t stop there, though. The four-season package is something I’d opt for since each year, both winter and summer seem to be getting harsher!

For the price, it would be nice for solar to come standard, but the optional solar package is still a sensible investment for full-timers wanting to off-grid camp from time to time and power appliances.   If you’re looking for a rig to fit guests, there’s a bunkhouse floorplan able to sleep a whole family. You can expect a comprehensive warranty through Grand Design, as they value their customers greatly and are there whenever there’s a bump in the road!

Best With Laundry: Forest River Rockwood Signature

Forest River is a star in the RV world, with a wide variety of popular RV models under their name brand. The Rockwood Signature is no exception, with six floorplans and countless features available, both standard and optional.  The six-floor plans range in length from 29′ 11″ to 36′ 8″ making this Forest River one of the smaller trailers on our list. Having a more compact RV with laundry available is a rare find, and it’s a must for me, living full-time on the road in my travel trailer with a partner and pup!

All the layouts of the Rockwood signature are fairly unique, with king beds as options and multiple seating and sleeping arrangements possible so the whole family can enjoy this home on wheels. The open floorplans bring such an airy feel to this amper, and the deluxe chef kitchens across all of the various layouts make cooking on the road an absolute dream.

Some models include electric fireplaces and master bedroom televisions, while others boast kitchens with ample countertops and innovative storage solutions. The exterior and interior storage available on these rigs is fantastic for full-timing and brings the kind of organizing needed to live smoothly on the open road.

I like the range of optional features such as the second AC unit and extendable outdoor storage deck as these features would both be fantastic for keeping me and my dog cool during the summer season. A few of the additional features are worth investing in for those looking for a boondocking adventure trailer, but this does bump up the overall cost substantially. However, the complete solar installation on the roof is a great start for remaining powered off the grid.

This rig also has an outdoor kitchen ready to be used and WiFi prep so I can play video games seamlessly in the Rockwood Signature no matter where I’m parked for the next few days. With wardrobe space and optional pantry storage, there’s space for just about everything and then some!

Forest River build durable and long-lasting rigs with fair warranty plans to give customers the peace of mind needed when living in a travel trailer full-time. This RV brand also has a wonderful owner’s club and helpful customer service that are just a call away from offering expert knowledge and advice.

Most Storage: Airstream Flying Cloud

While the Flying Cloud isn’t Airstream’s largest model, it does boast considerable storage solutions that I wouldn’t first expect from this aluminum rig! From the nose to the rear bumper, that’s a special feeling that comes with towing an Airstream, and the Flying Cloud is a popular choice, favored by many avid RVers.

The Flying Cloud comes in eight floorplans, ranging from 23 feet to 30 feet, so it’s an awesome option for newbies or those preferring to tow smaller trailers. This rig might not be the biggest for full-time living, but its class and internal features are well worth the investment. Airstream does everything in style, with light wood cabinetry and stainless steel finishes to match the exterior of the rig. There’s storage hidden everywhere, and this is something that makes an enormous difference when living on the road full-time!

There’s a kitchen pantry, under-bed storage, and even exterior storage compartments on top of the various storage areas already throughout the trailer. The convenience doesn’t stop there, however, as the Flying Cloud has a few select floor plans with an innovative exterior hatch opening allowing interior living space to extend outside. This is a huge perk for full-time living as it creates the opportunity to experience the great outdoors from the comfort of the trailer.

The kitchen is well-appointed with a full range and oven combination, along with stainless steel sink and a kitchen island in select floor plans, great for serving up weekend family brunch. Speaking of family, everyone can come along for an adventure in the Flying Cloyd as it’s easy to sleep multiple individuals thanks to convertible furniture and even a twin bed sleeping option.

One floor plan even leaves space for a dedicated office environment so providing the ideal work-from-home setting for digital nomads. Airstream aren’t recognized for being a budget-friendly brand, and I’ll admit, the Flying Clooud isn’t the cheapest trailer option out there. But equipped with a backup camera, standard solar prep, and more, this trailer has great potential as a full-time RV.

While the price may be a bit high and the size may be a bit small for pro-RVers or those requiring a bit more space, Airstream has a lot to offer in terms of the longevity of their rigs and the owner perks that come along with warranties and member clubs.

Best Off-Road: OPUS Camper OP15

Traveling from one place to another can sometimes feel tedious, especially when living full-time on the road. However, there’s a dynamic travel trailer perfect for life on the road, and it’s called the OPUS Camper OP15. I’m a big fan of OPUS, as I believe they are one of the most forward-thinking RV manufacturers out there, especially since the OP15 is a fully off-road, hybrid rig!

Getting to the best park ups isn’t always easy. There have been countless occasions when I’ve found a great-looking park up on my phone, but upon arrival, there’s no trailer-safe access. The OP15 is an off-grid beast, and for wild camping and hunting about the best, remote spots, there’s no better trailer. The price is on the expensive side, but I believe an investment in the OP15 won’t lead to disappointment, and there are many reasons why.

This rig has a dry weight of jump of 5,000lbs, making it a dream for those not wanting a heavy trailer, and already own a rig capable of handling this pretty lightweight number. This is a futuristic rig, and its style matches the aesthetic of all OPUS camper rigs, but these trailers aren’t just good-looking. The di-bond aluminum composite panel exterior with aluminum sub-structure and fully hot-dip galvanized chassis draw-bar reassure me of the durability of the OP15.

I love that this rig is off-grid ready with 300W of solar power on the roof, however, it’s wise to upgrade to some of the off-grid options for those looking to full-time in the sticks! Having features such h as DC to DC charging on board will help keep electrics finely tuned and powered up, while the optional addition of three lithium batteries is also a surefire way of staying powered up without relying on a campground hookup.

Impressively, although only measuring just over 23′ in length when set up, the OP15 can comfortably accommodate sleeping four people. I find the ingenuity of this OPUS camper truly outstanding. Some exterior RV kitchens aren’t too well-equipped, yet this rig boats an outdoor kitchen fit for a feast! With a 4-burner stovetop, storage and pantry access, a dish rack, a chopping board, LED lights, and even a 12V fridge/freezer, this is a rig I want to show off.

Why Live In A Travel Trailer Full Time?

There may be many reasons why you might want to live full-time in a travel trailer. Some of those may include:

  • Lower cost of living overall
  • You want to experience some freedom and travel
  • Tiny home living interests you
  • You’re an outdoor enthusiast
  • You want to volunteer or dedicate a portion of your life to nature
  • Retirement means you are ready for a change
  • Meet new people while on the road

I changed my life when I decided to live full-time in a travel trailer. My partner and I fixed up a vintage rig and we decided to travel the nation as state park hosts. Volunteering brings me joy, and it may bring you a similar positive feeling!

No matter your reasons, living full-time in a travel trailer means weighing up the pros and cons and considering as much as possible to choose the right rig for you.

What To Consider For Full Time Travel Trailer Living?

From adequate storage space to the ability to do your own laundry, here are some of the top things for you to consider when planning on living in a travel trailer full-time.

Storage Space

No matter how long you spend in your RV, storage space is always at a premium. If you plan on full-timing, storage space will likely be a top priority. This is usually because you’ll be bringing clothes, items, and food along with you on your journey.  Some full-timers enjoy finding RVs with wardrobes and large closets as it means plenty of interior storage.

Some RVs or travel trailers may even have pantries in the kitchen, leading to ample food storage, ideal for full-time needs.  RVs always have a decent amount of exterior storage, though this is most useful for outdoor gear or things that aren’t needed every day. The location of storage space is key to living peacefully in an RV full-time, and knowing where everything is!

Length Of Travel Trailer

The overall length of a camper matters for a number of reasons, the longer the rig, the more space there is! The size of a travel trailer is also an important consideration as your tow vehicle will only be able to handle a certain amount of weight, and this has to be respected. However, the longer the rig, the less likely you are to fit into every single campground or RV park you come across.

Some travel trailers, especially fifth wheels, can reach nearly 50 feet in length, which may be too long for many locales.  Choosing a shorter travel trailer may mean less interior living, but it could maximize your outdoor adventures. However, if you don’t plan on traveling very much or are comfortable camping in very specific locations, then having more space may feel right for you.

WiFi Capabilities

If you’re hitting the road as a full-time RVer because you’re a freelancer working from home, WiFi capabilities are worth giving a lot of thought to! Digital nomads and freelancers working from their homes on wheels is becoming more common, and WiFi is now typically a standard option across most types of RVs. It’s still worth checking internet is an option with any travel trailers you’re interested in, though, just to be sure!

You may not be very concerned about internet access if you don’t work from home or don’t plan on using the internet beyond checking the occasional email. However, it may be beneficial to have WiFi onboard while you travel for streaming and internet entertainment.

Keep in mind your WiFi may not work in every single place you camp; often, cell signals, and remoteness play a huge part in this. Having a router will only do so much if there’s no internet access to be found in the middle of nowhere. But then again, I think it’s quite nice to switch off from time to time! Since there are studies linking increased screen time with lower mental health , having no signal provides the ideal opportunity for some healing time in nature with loved ones.

Kitchen Amenities

While cooking on your outdoor RV grill is an option during warmer months, it’s wise to pay particular attention to your travel trailer’s kitchen when considering life on the road full-time. Your RV’s kitchen will no doubt become a central part of your life, but you’ll still need to function with reduced space and appliances when compared to a traditional home. This is especially true when living in an RV with only 30 amps of electricity.

Many common household appliances need more amps than you might think, and counter space will be at a premium. You should pay special attention to what can fit in your travel trailer kitchen, and how many amps your favorite appliance needs in order to operate. Travel trailers may also not have a full stove and oven to cook with.

I went in search of an RV kitchen with a full range and oven combination, along with a kitchen sink with two compartments. Trust me when I say this was a necessity for me!  Fridge space should also be something to consider. You may keep an eye out for RVs with residential-sized fridges as opposed to a more compact fridge size.

Bathroom Amenities

Your RV bathroom is almost as important as your RV kitchen. You’ll need to decide if you want a wet bath or a dry bath – most full-timers want the option of a dry bath so the toilet can still be accessed while someone is showering. Most travel trailer bathrooms are pretty cut and dry. Some may have ample room to have two guests walking around in it; most will not. The main thing for you to consider in an RV bathroom? How large your hot water tank is.

Hot water will be at a premium in your RV unless you have a tankless water heater installed . You will not likely have enough hot water for a very long shower, and you won’t be able to shower and do dishes at the same time with a tank water heater. You may also be on the lookout for a travel trailer with a bathtub, or maybe even a travel trailer with two bathrooms for your large family or for guests. No matter your needs, there’s a rig out there for you- it just may take some customizing to achieve the goal RV!

Additional Bedrooms

Speaking of guests, you may want to find an RV with another bedroom or multiple sleeping areas so you can comfortably invite guests to stay over. Travel trailers are built with large groups in mind, so friends and relatives can join in the camping fun without any hassle.

Many of these sleeping options involve convertible furniture of some kind, especially when looking at toy haulers . I’ve found having a master bedroom is key to comfort and keeps my partner and me a happy couple! However, a pull-out sofa is also a great shout for when the grandkids want to travel around for a couple of weeks over summer break.

Living Space

Given you’ll be living full-time in your travel trailer, the main living area should be something to give a substantial amount of thought to. It’s wise to write down a list of wants and needs so you can figure out exactly what you’re expecting a travel trailer to offer you. Would you like theatre seating in your slide-out? How about an electric fireplace or Bluetooth soundbar?

The options are truly endless when it comes to customizing your main living room or living space. However, only you know what you want and the kind of rigs that are within budget. Many prime living area customizations are add-ons or non-standard features, so be prepared for these to increase overall costs.

It may be helpful for you to tour your desired RV make and model before deciding on your final purchase. Getting a feel for the living space and layout is important before diving right into full-time living.

Travel Trailer Weight

Travel trailers need to be weighed often , mainly to take care of your tow vehicle. You never want to tow more than your tow vehicle can handle, but this is easier said than done for many full-timers packing their rigs to the brim.

This is why knowing the weight of your rig and how much weight your tow vehicle can safely transport down the road is crucial. While you may want to bring everything with you when you hit the road, keep in mind that sometimes, less is more, and nothing is worth towing an overweight travel trailer.

Holding Tank Sizes

Tanks are commonplace with RVs, and generally, on any camper, there is a fresh water, black water, and gray water tank. All of these tanks matter even more when you are a full-timer. If you plan on being disconnected from water and sewer lines, you’ll likely want a much larger tank than your average weekend warrior.

This is a good thing to keep an eye out for, as no full-timer wants to be constantly refilling their fresh water tank or emptying their waste tanks as it’s totally inconvenient! Saving a trip to the dump station can be a big deal if you are already emptying your tank weekly as a full-timer!

While living in a travel trailer can be a much lower investment than living in a traditional home, your budget should still be a consideration when shopping for an RV. Between the cost of your tow vehicle, rig, and any additional extras, you may end up spending more than you initially thought.

However, given an RV may be your full-time home for many years, it’s wise to invest and be prepared for just about any opportunity. Some potentially wise investments include a second air conditioner, tank heaters for cold seasons , and a backup camera.

Appliance Options And Laundry

Finally, a huge consideration for many full-timers is their appliance access and options for laundry services on board their rig. Many travel trailers and fifth wheels offer stackable washer-dryer units , making full-time RV living so much easier.

However, you’ll need to make sure your desired travel trailer layout supports these sorts of appliances. You may also want to ensure that your rig has an oven, microwave, or other appliance that may make like a bit more convenient.

12 Best Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living (& Brands To Avoid)

Photo of author

Best Small Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living for a Single Person or Couples

  • Terra Rover Travel Trailer by inTech: Best Small Camper to Live in 4-Season
  • Alta LE 1600MRB: Small Travel Trailer by East and West RV

Terra Rover 4-Season Travel Trailer for Full-Time Living

inTech Terra Rover Travel Trailer, available in the USA and Canada, is a lightweight fantastic trailer for single people and couples pursuing full-time camper living during the 4-seasons.

The main difference between Terra Rover and the rest of the travel trailers suggested in this article is the structure, materials, exquisite interior design, and how well-prepared this travel trailer is for a 4-season full-time living.

Buying a four-season-ready RV for full-time living offers numerous advantages, such as making it possible (and easy) to live safely and comfortably during severe weather. Foremost, it reduces energy consumption and provides cost-effective insulation. Also, it offers flexible living arrangements and the freedom to move and explore different places; because one may live off-grid and reduce dependency on outside resources, it fosters a sense of self-sufficiency and self-reliance. Last but not least, it provides a distinctive and exciting living experience, with chances to explore nature and lead a more eco-friendly and sustainable existence. Definitely, Terra Rover Tby inTech is one of the best campers to live in cold weather .

Even though this travel trailer is meant for 4 people, I would recommend the inTech Rover as one of the best travel trailers for single people or couples for full-time living and establishing their workstation in the front 93″ x 48″ dinette.

Terra Rover 4-Season Travel Trailer for Full-Time Living

Unlike most RVs, the Terra Rover features a bathroom and shower in separate cubicles with its own ventilation. With no slides-out, it’s spacious enough for 1 or 2 people and even the company of your four-legged friend. And at the same time, the dinette can easily be converted into a guest room. With an indoor and outdoor kitchen, it allows you to enjoy your meals and cook in comfort.

Good materials and furniture finishes. Excellent quality and customer service. Lightweight (GVWR 7,500 lbs.) and durable due to the structure and high-quality materials used.

fiberglass Travel Trailer review canada 2023

The capacity of the tanks is adequate for the number of people proposed in this review (fresh water tank of 44 gallons, gray water tank of 39 gallons, black water tank of 39 gallons).

Another advantage that allows full-time living independent of external temperature is that it has a furnace, air-conditioning, water heater, heated underbelly, etc. You get into a Terra Rover and never get out again! Here are some details of the specifications, furnace of 25K BTU, A/C of 15K BTU ducted, water heater of 6 gallons (electric or gas), insulation bubble foil in walls and ceiling, tank insulation heated underbelly, 12v line heaters, tank heat pads, etc.

As if that wasn’t enough, you enjoy a genuine 60″ x 80″ queen size bed in the bedroom, with storage space.

If all this hasn’t convinced you or if this RV brand is new to you, I recommend you watch this video to learn more about the Rover Terra travel trailer by inTech and its possibilities as a 4-season trailer for full-time living.

The only disadvantage I will mention, but I must clarify that it is not necessarily a disadvantage for all RVers who plan to live full time in a camper, is that it is unprepared for a washer and dryer. You will hardly find available space on the floor plan for its installation.

Alta 1600MRB Small Camper to Live In for Singles and Couples

Grand Design RV comes to mind when we talk about high-quality travel trailers that are built for last. Unquestionably synonymous with luxury, it solely sells premium travel trailers and luxury fifth wheels, perfect options for full time living with a family in a comfortable environment .

There are several beautiful layouts in the Grand Design Reflection series, but the 312BHTS is one of the most excellent luxury travel trailers for full-time living .

We began this article by stating that we will place particular emphasis on specific features that will make our full-time living travel trailer more comfortable , such as the kitchen location, ventilation while cooking, space for cooking, washer and dryer prep, pantry space, over the head cabinets and exterior storage, residential-sized appliances, king-sized bed, easy winterization or four-season features, and so on.

A large pass-through exterior storage compartment will help you keep the inside of your trailer tidy. Also, it is equipped with a functional outside shower.

Moreover, the Reflection series is prepared for full-time living during the 4-season. Some of the features in the winterization package of this 4-season travel trailer include the heated and enclosed dump valves and the underbelly with recirculating heat, both of them recommended to face extreme temperatures. Additionally, the insulated walls and slide-out floors, the thermo-foil insulation under holding tanks, and the EZ winterization valve will help you to preserve the RV energy expended in heating the trailer. Furthermore, the furnace and the fireplace are good features. Exactly what a family needs to live full-time.

As soon as you cross the entry door, you will find the fantastic full-dry bathroom of this trailer . The bathroom includes a large medicine cabinet with a mirror, a large vanity top with a deep hand sink, a porcelain foot-flushable toilet, and a spacious 30” x 36” shower with a sliding glass door and expansive view skylight over the shower, and a vent fan.

The queen mattress is 60” x 80” with a residential bedspread and includes oversized bed base storage. This room is set up to accommodate a TV on the wall-mounted TV provided.

As you go through this RV, it is easy to understand why we propose the Reflection 312BHTS as one of the best travel trailers for full-time living.

Using only beds and bunks, the sleeping capacity of this trailer is up to 4 people. Depending on your options, you may fold down sofas and the dinette, increasing the sleeping space up to 7-8 people when receiving visitors.

At the left of the entry door, you will find the first of the 3 slides out and one of the biggest living rooms with a fireplace and kitchen you may find in a travel trailer. Atypical for a travel trailer, this floor plan seems like a fifth-wheel trailer from the inside.

The slide-out closer to the entry door proposes locating a booth dinette and a theatre seating. An optional free-standing dinette and a tri-fold sofa could replace the section.

The nice island kitchen improves the space to prep gourmet meals and serves to connect a fully equipped slide-out kitchen with residential appliances, moving you around the entertainment center.

Finally, at the rear of this family bunk travel trailer is located in the private second bedroom. The rear bunk room for 4 people with two bunk beds, a tri-fold sofa, an entertainment center, drawers, and a wardrobe closet is perfect for families pursuing full-time camper living.

What Travel Trailers to Avoid for Full-Time Living and Why

Here are the campers to avoid for live in full-time.

Alpha Wolf Floor plans are not recommended for full-time living but are great for traveling.

Although the Cherokee Alpha Wolf line offers excellent value for the price, they are spacious, well-finished, and often our recommended floor plans. In this case, we believe they are not the Forest River floor plans we would recommend for families with children who choose to live full-time in a travel trailer.

Certain features are recommended for full-time living in a travel trailer; an entertainment center in the bunkhouse is essential and gives parents significant advantages in separating activities and privacy. Also, we mentioned earlier how important it is for the booth dinette to provide the right size for the number of people in the RV.

For example, the 2023 Cherokee Alpha Wolf 30RDB-L has two bunk beds in a bunk room. However, no entertainment center is located inside the bunk room. The Alpha Wolf 30DBH-L has the same issue. So, you will need to jump to the floor plan of Alpha Wolf 33BH-L, which includes the entertainment center appreciated when living full-time in a travel trailer with kids. However, in this model, the dinette is short-sized for only four people.

Don’t get me wrong. Alpha Wolf travel trailers are great for vacation. They are a good choice in other circumstances but not recommended for full-time living.

According to owners, Winnebago Travel Trailers are not recommended for full-time living.

It is expensive, common, and without any of the features necessary for comfortable RV living. Many RVers may have decided on this camper to establish their full-time lifestyle. But if you have the budget, go for other models and floor plans that offer what will be a priority for camper living.

Airstream Travel Trailers: Lack of Comfort for Families

Users after RV renting manifest Airstream Travel Trailers are too expensive without any comfort for a family. You pay for excellent design (if you like something super retro) and the publicity Airstream spends to appear in Hollywood in every movie they can. But you don’t pay for comfort, versatility, and high quality of life. It makes sense because they are not designed for full-time living.

We recently had our chance to rent an Airstream Classic 33FB for a week, a very long 33+ feet and a heavy 10,000 pounds.  Even for a couple like us, with no grandchildren to accompany us on this occasion, both of us working sporadically on our laptops, the cramped interior was tedious. It is impossible to prepare anything other than a simple meal because the lack of space is appalling. The absence of slides-out worsens the circulation, and we are lucky to be slim. Otherwise, using the shower or even sharing the circulation in a corridor is complicated.

How expensive? For 2023, the Airstream Classic 33FB has a starting price of $206,500, and the International 30RB is $137,400, Flying Cloud® 30FB Bunk, suitable for a family with kids, has a starting price of $124,500.

Possible RV Brands to Avoid for Not a Great Customer Service

Chinook RV and Gulf Stream’s top the list of worst customer services in RVers’ forum surveys.

However, any company can change and improve in this area. A couple of years ago, Keystone RV did not offer good customer service. However, they changed radically, and today are one of the best companies with plenty of floor plans to recommend.

We hope you find this article reviewing the 12 Best Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living handy to learn more about the critical decision you are about to take.

Discover the 2024 Jayco Jay Flight SLX

best couple travel trailer

The Jay Flight SLX lineup includes 10 floorplans, nine of which are available on the East Coast. (Note that model codes with a “W” indicate West Coast models.) Here’s the spec overview of the complete lineup:

Jay Flight SLX includes bunkhouse, rear bath, queen bed, Murphy bed, and rear living travel trailer floorplan options, sleeping as few as four campers and as many as 10. Remember, the SLX series is built to be towable by many vehicles, so you won’t see any king beds in these travel trailers. Instead, these shorter travel trailers promise easier towing and comfortable, well-designed interiors. Choose from single-axle or double-axle travel trailers and those with slide-outs and without.

Previously, the SLX lineup was split into two categories, SLX 7 and SLX 8, which separated the units by exterior width—seven feet and eight feet, respectively. While Jayco no longer uses these distinctions, the SLX line still comes in two different exterior widths.

All “100” model codes currently have seven-foot exterior widths, and “200” models have eight-foot exterior widths. In addition, “100” models have six-foot six-inch interior heights, and “200” models have six-foot nine-inch interior heights. The “100” and “200” model codes also separate the single and double-axle SLX travel trailers, and it’s worth pointing out the difference in fresh water, gray water, and black water tank capacities, which more than double when you move to the double-axle Jay Flight SLX travel trailers.

The Jay Flight SLX series appeals to a wide range of campers. Let’s explore some of our favorite overall, family, and couples models.

Top Jay Flight SLX Campers

Jay flight slx 183rb and 183rbw.

The floorplan layout of the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 183RRB

  • Length: 21’1”
  • Dry Weight: 3,375 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4

Quaint, efficient campers, the Jay Flight SLX 183RB and 183RBW are some of the most accessible travel trailers for those new to towing. A single slide-out adds extra interior living space that’s rare for a travel trailer of this size. This brings you back to basics with a spacious rear bath, a queen-size bed, and the ability to host guests if needed. The 183RB encapsulates everything the SLX lineup offers: easy to use, easy to tow, comfortable, and ready for extended weekend vacations.

Jay Flight SLX 262RLS and 262RLSW

The floorplan layout of the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 262RLS

  • Length: 31’1”
  • Dry Weight: 6,044 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

More is better in the case of the 262RLS and 262RLSW—SLX’s largest travel trailers. While this camper isn’t as lightweight as other SLX options, it’s an innovative design that any couple will enjoy. The added slide-out makes for a roomy rear living area that includes a rarity among SLX travel trailers: reclining theater seats.

We also like the wide, panoramic windows and the overhead storage made possible by those taller 81-inch ceilings. Don’t miss the open-concept kitchen with a sink on a soft angle, which makes this main living area more inviting.

When entertaining guests, you’ll enjoy a private bathroom entrance in the middle of the camper, so you and your guests can easily access it without disturbing the other side. And the 262RLS includes two entry doors, adding another layer of convenience.

Best Jay Flight SLX Travel Trailers For Families

Jay flight slx 174bh and 174bhw.

  • Length: 21’8”
  • Dry Weight: 3,140 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5

The SLX 174BH and 174BHW have everything you need—and nothing you don’t—for the perfect family RV weekend. This minimalist floorplan is exceptionally easy to tow—even with an SUV—but can still comfortably sleep your entire family. Look no further if you’re seeking an affordable, small bunkhouse travel trailer . We like that they maintain a queen bed in the limited space. While the storage is limited, solid hardwood cabinet doors in the kitchen and bedroom keep your belongings secure while traveling.

Jay Flight SLX 260BH and 260BHW

The floorplan layout of the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 260BH

  • Length: 29’6”
  • Dry Weight: 4,685 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

To show the diversity of the SLX lineup, compare the previous bunkhouse with the 260BH and 260BHW. Incredibly, these campers stay under thirty feet and 5,000 pounds but can sleep up to 10 guests! And Jayco accomplishes this without a slide-out. We love the living room with a jackknife sofa that bumps against the front queen bed, creating much-needed separation and additional sleeping spots.

The taller ceilings make room for double-over-double bunks, so your kids or guests won’t feel crowded. You get added storage, too, with overhead compartments above the dinette. This is a fantastic, unique floorplan that presents some serious advantages.

The floorplan layout of the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 195RB

  • Length: 21’10”
  • Dry Weight: 3,015 pounds

Let’s start with the most alluring feature of the SLX 195RB and 195RBW: the large closet wardrobe. This is unusual for a couple’s travel trailer of this size, but it’s the perfect addition to make a small, towable camper like this more manageable and comfortable. Use that storage any way you’d like. We also like the other couples-focused features like the bedside wardrobes and nightstands. These simple, straightforward, single-axle units are easy to tow and maintain and offer a comfortable basecamp for your adventures.

Jay Flight SLX Features

Cut-away image of a Jay Flight SLX, revealing its construction features

So, what do we like about the SLX travel trailers? Let’s explore some universal features across this best-selling lineup.

Magnum Truss™ Roof System

Impressively, all Jay Flight SLX models include the industry-best Magnum Truss™ roof system , which is the same you’ll find on Jayco’s top luxury travel trailers and fifth wheels. This includes ⅜” plywood decking for added support, water resistance, and longevity. With 2 x 2” studs, 7” header beams, and screwed (not stapled) construction, you get a superior quality roof on an affordable travel trailer.

Upgraded Features

Having an on-demand tankless water heater in a lightweight, entry-level travel trailer is an uncommon advantage. You’ll love the near-continuous hot water, especially for bunkhouse owners bringing kids and friends along.

And this is just one of the many upgraded features you’ll find on SLX that you would expect on Jayco’s higher-end towables. Features like the G20 dark tinted privacy windows, the Solid Step® entry steps, and Keyed-Alike™ entry and baggage doors are nice-to-haves that boost the appeal of these travel trailers.

Bolstered Interior Construction

Explore the SLX interiors, and you’ll find some significant construction advantages, starting with the solid hardwood cabinet doors, which are a small but essential detail.

We also love the residential-style kitchen countertops, the vinyl flooring, the ball-bearing drawer glides with an impressive 75-pound storage capacity, and the high-capacity bunk beds (300 pounds for singles and 600 pounds for doubles).

Floorplan Variety

Choices matter for RVers. With 10 primary floorplans in the SLX lineup, we appreciate the options for couples, families, solo travelers, empty-nesters, and anyone else. While it would be nice to have a king-size bed option, the SLX lineup still includes a diverse array of floorplans, ranging from front dining to front living to an east-to-west queen bed option.

Many options exist, so you might consider visiting a Jayco-exclusive dealership to check out the full lineup.

Jay Flight SLX vs Jay Flight Campers

Image of a Jay Flight being towed by an SUV in the woods.

Size and amenities are the primary differences between the Jay Flight SLX travel trailers and the Jay Flight campers.

The Jay Flight trailers offer more residential features and added comfort for anyone interested in longer trips or seasonal stays. However, you will likely need a tow vehicle with more towing capacity, and these travel trailers are more expensive. The SLX line lacks certain upgraded interior features of the Jay Flight line, notably the kitchen appliances, three-burner cooktops, seamless countertops, four-inch bunk mats, solar panels, and outdoor kitchens and showers.

We would love to see the SLX travel trailers include exterior features like a power tongue jack to make setup and teardown easier. Additionally, the SLX models only have the option to upgrade to an enclosed underbelly, while the Jay Flight lineup includes enclosed and heated underbellies as standard.

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress provides great edge support and motion isolation. Its mix of memory foam and pocket springs produces an average firmness, making it an outstanding solution for back pain sufferers of any sleeping style.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Foam and pocket springs offer breathability and support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Ideal motion isolation and edge support for couples
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Medium firmness will benefit all sleeping styles
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Heavy and difficult to maneuver

For the last five years, I've tested a new mattress every two to four weeks for my job. Before that, my wife and I enjoyed a year of restful slumber on the Leesa Sapira Hybrid. It struck a remarkable balance between support and comfort that accommodated side, stomach, and back sleeping.

Since testing the Leesa Sapira, I've found few mattresses that compare to it in comfort, but those that did were softer and catered to side sleepers, not stomach or back sleepers. There's a good chance you and your partner have different preferred sleep positions, and I think most sleepers will find the Leesa Sapira Hybrid comfortable. It's no wonder we chose it as the top pick in our guides to the best mattresses , best hybrid mattresses , best mattress-in-a-box , and best mattresses for back pain .

The Leesa Sapira is our top pick for the best mattress for couples, thanks to its support that maintains comfort right to the bed's edge. I never felt like I would fall off, even when my wife encroached on my side of the bed. The motion-dampening properties were also great, keeping me undisturbed as my wife and dog moved in the night.

It has five layers. The top layer is cooling foam, followed by contouring memory foam. Below that, the airflow-facilitating individually wrapped pocket springs are between two supportive foam layers. Thanks to the Leesa Sapira Hybrid's airflow and cooling foam, I didn't overheat during the hot, humid Midwest summer nights. All foams used in the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified to be free of hazardous chemicals and emissions.

All sleep types will appreciate the average firmness and budget-friendly price of the Zinus Green Tea Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress.

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. No showroom availability or in-home setup options
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. No Cal king option
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Short trial period

The Zinus 12-inch Cooling Green Tea Gel Memory Foam Mattress has an average firmness that will appeal to the broadest range of sleepers, a plus for couples who prefer different sleep positions. While testing it, I slept comfortably on my back, stomach, and side. The Zinus is the best budget mattress for couples because, of the mattresses under $500 I've tested, it excelled in terms of motion isolation and edge support, so you will remain comfortable when your partner moves in the night or if they decide to hog the bed.

The Zinus Cooling Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress is made of three CertiPUR-US certified foam layers: gel memory foam for cooling, pressure-relieving soft memory foam, and a dense base foam for durability and support. The mattress dissipated heat well and stayed cool in my testing.

I tested the thickest version, 12 inches. But, the Zinus mattress is also available in 6, 8, and 10-inch options. Mattresses under 10 inches thick haven't been supportive enough in my experience, so I recommend sticking with the 10 or 12-inch beds.

With medium-firm support and pressure point relief, the Midnight Mattress is best for side sleepers or sleepers who toss and turn.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Exceptional edge support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Good motion isolation
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Great for back and stomach sleepers
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. CertiPUR-US and OKEO-TEX certified
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Poor heat dissipation
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Strong initial odor
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. May not be comfortable for side sleepers

A good mattress for sex should support you without sinking in so you can easily change positions. A little bounce is helpful, though you generally don't want too much. And, of course, you still want the mattress to be comfortable for sleeping.

The Helix Midnight Mattress fits all of the above criteria. It is medium-firm and ideal for back and stomach sleepers and back pain sufferers. In addition to being named the best mattress for sex, we also named it the best budget pick in our guide to the best mattresses for back pain . During testing, I was most comfortable on my stomach. It helped me recover from a back pain flare-up.

When my kid bounded on the bed, I was barely jostled, and the Helix Midnight passed my bowling ball test, suggesting it has excellent motion isolation. The edge support was among the best I've experienced. I had to roll quite far on the edge before I fell off, and it didn't sink much as I sat on the side. These factors make the Helix an outstanding mattress for couples.

Helix uses OEKO-Tex and CertiPUR-US-certified materials. The top layer is a pressure-relieving memory foam. Below that are two responsive foam layers designed for support and comfort. Next are individually wrapped coils that help limit motion transfer and improve edge support. The base foam adds durability and support.

The Helix Midnight didn't dissipate heat well, which cold sleepers might like. Hot sleepers may want to consider other beds.  However, since we initially tested the Midnight, Helix also offers a cooling-cover pillowtop upgrade that members of the BI team have tried on other Helix mattresses and have reported as effective at eliminating hot spots. Most side sleepers may also find it too firm for optimal spinal alignment.

In our testing, the Nest Bedding Finch Latex Mattress stayed cool and dissipated heat quickly, and its medium firmness will appeal to most sleepers.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Materials are certified by many independent standards organizations
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Excellent edge support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Medium feel will appeal to most sleepers
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Dissipated heat well and stayed cool in our tests
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Subpar motion isolation

In our guide to the best cooling mattress , the Nest Bedding Finch Latex Mattress tested the lowest temperature readings; it stayed cool and dissipated heat well. I was too cold one night during testing and had to grab extra blankets.

None of the top cooling mattresses we tested had both good edge support and motion isolation. The Finch came the closest, making it the best cooling mattress for couples who appreciate impressive edge support. I felt comfortable and supported while lying on the edge, and the sinkage was minimal as I sat. However, the motion isolation was below average. The Finch failed our bowling ball test, and our vibrometer readings were middle-of-the-pack. Yet, it had a lot of bounce, which may appeal to some couples.

The Nest Bedding mattress comes in medium and firm options. I tested the medium and was comfortable in every position, though I preferred side sleeping. It features an airflow-facilitating CertiPUR-US-certified foam, cotton, and wool top layer. Two layers of OEKO-Tex-certified latex are below that. The top latex layer offers firmness, while the lower layer gives the mattress structure, support, and durability.

In addition to its 365-night home trial and lifetime warranty, Nest Bedding provides Lifetime Renewal Exchange with the Finch. At any time during the mattress's life, you can request a free new comfort layer to change the feel or extend the life of the bed.

Couples shopping for a foam mattress will appreciate the GhostBed Luxe Mattress's medium firmness, great motion isolation, and excellent edge support.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Great motion isolation
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Outstanding edge support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Great for all sleeping styles
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. 25-year warranty
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Petite side sleepers may find this bed too firm

Memory foam mattresses are popular because they relieve pressure points by cradling your body. They also tend to be more affordable than hybrid or latex mattresses. The GhostBed Luxe consists of CertiPUR-US-certified foam layers to keep you cool. The top layer and cover contain cooling phase change material and gel memory foam. A fabric layer below that is supposed to pull away your body's heat. Following that is another gel foam layer, then a bouncy comfort foam layer, and a supportive and durable foam at the base.

GhostBed calls the Luxe the "coolest bed in the world," but that wasn't my experience. While it did a pretty good job of staying cool, it didn't dissipate heat well once I got up from it. Overall, I'd say its cooling properties are average.

The Luxe is the best memory foam mattress for couples because its edge support and motion isolation are impressive. While it barely failed the bowling ball test, its vibrometer readings were among the lowest. Subjectively, I didn't feel jostled when my wife moved around on the bed. I felt comfortable and supported when lying on the edge, and the mattress exhibited minimal sinkage.

No matter what position I tried — side, back, or stomach — I felt comfortable on the average-firmness GhostBed Luxe Mattress. The memory foam did better than most hybrids at adapting to my body to ensure my spine remained aligned in each sleep position.

If you and your partner just can't agree on mattress firmness, the Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed allows you to customize each side to your perfect firmness. The bed automatically adjusts based on your body's position.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Built-in sleep tracker
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Adjustable firmness to cater to your specific sleeping style
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Automatically adjusts as you shift in the night
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Free in-home setup
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Good edge support
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Poor motion isolation
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Subpar heat dissipation

Finding a mattress that caters to couples with vastly different sleep preferences is a hassle. For example, stomach sleepers generally need a firmer mattress, but if your partner is a side sleeper, they'll likely prefer a softer mattress. This problem is compounded when you consider that our sleep preferences change over a mattress's life. Fortunately, adjustable airbeds, like the Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed, have you covered.

The i8 is the best mattress for couples with different sleep preferences because it has 20 firmness levels. Each side of the bed adjusts independently, so you can, for instance, have a firm experience while your partner keeps it soft. Additionally, it has a function that automatically adjusts the air as you shift your sleep position to provide you with consistent pressure relief and support. This feature significantly improved my sleep quality.

While I used independent measurement to track my sleep quality, the i8 also tracks your sleep using built-in sensors that pair with an app (available for Android and iOS ) that also offers tips for improving your sleep.

The mattress features impressive edge support. However, the motion isolation was awful. My wife said it reminded her of a water bed as she could feel my every movement. I tested the i8 in king size. If you're concerned about motion isolation, I recommend the split king, which is pricier but offers better motion isolation as the sides are split and can be paired with a split frame for additional upright adjustability.

The Saatva Solaire adjustable air bed has 50 firmness settings for a personalized sleep experience, excellent edge support, and kept me cool throughout the night.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. 1,600-pound capacity
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. 50 firmness settings
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Great edge support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Impressive heat dissipation
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Long home trial and warranty
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Hard to move once installed

The Saatva Solaire Adjustable Firmness Mattress is the best mattress for heavy couples because it supports 800 pounds per person and up to 1,600 pounds per couple. As an adjustable air bed, it has independently adjustable firmness levels, catering to your and your partner's preferences. While the popular Sleep Number beds have 20 firmness levels, the Solaire offers 50, so you can fine-tune your custom feel.

My wife and I had to tinker to find our ideal firmness. On the 1 to 50 scale, I preferred 27 for side sleeping, while my wife chose a firmer 37 for sleeping on her back. I like to sleep on my stomach when I'm sore, and I appreciated that I could just up the firmness to keep my spine aligned on my stomach.

The Saatva Solaire had excellent edge support. It didn't sag much when I sat on the side to put socks on, and I never felt like falling off when I was lying on the edge. However, the motion isolation left a lot to be desired. I could feel my wife's movements from my side of the bed in the night. The mattress also failed our bowling ball test.

If you're concerned about motion transfer, I recommend getting a "split" mattress. This improves dampening because the mattresses are separated. I tested the Solaire in flex top king, where the upper half of the mattress is divided while the bottom half is connected. This allows you to incline the head independently on an adjustable bed frame.

I chose the Big Fig Mattress for heavy people in our guide to the best mattresses . It's about half the price of the Solaire and has better motion isolation. However, the weight capacity is lower (1,100 pounds), and you can't adjust the firmness. Instead, it's just a firm mattress.

The Allswell Supreme Mattress is designed to provide comfort and support to a broad range of sleepers at an affordable price.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Great motion isolation and edge support
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Medium firmness that's comfortable for most sleeping styles
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Good for cold sleepers
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Sleeps hot
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. No in-home setup or showroom availability

Walmart's Allswell brand specializes in cost-effective products for your bedroom and bathroom. Its flagship Allswell mattress is the top pick in our best cheap mattress guide. However, the nearly $500 Supreme has a more dynamic feel that contours to your body and provides impressive pressure point relief for regenerative sleep.

I often shift between my back, stomach, and side at night, and the Allswell Supreme's average firmness was soothing no matter my position, making it the best mattress for combination-sleeper couples. The top layer features plush fabric. Below that is CertiPUR-US-certified copper gel-infused memory foam to remove heat from your body while easing muscle and joint pain. Next is responsive memory foam for more pressure point relief. The base is made up of individually wrapped coils for minimal motion transfer and improved edge support.

The coils seemed to do the trick. I felt supported even on the bed's edge and had to roll pretty far before falling off. The edge barely dipped when sitting on the side to put on socks. The motion isolation was better than average, as the Supreme passed the bowling ball test…barely. The soda can tilted but didn't fall after I dropped the ball.

The Allswell Supreme trapped heat, which felt uncomfortable since I like to be cool while sleeping. This is a great option if you want a mattress that will keep you warm. Otherwise, you may want to check out our guide to the best cooling mattresses .

The pricey Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed is all about customization, with firmness, temperature, and incline adjustments.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. 20 firmness levels with each side adjusting independently
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Internal heating and cooling system
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Comes with an adjustable bed frame
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Unparalleled motion isolation
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Air adjusts automatically based on your position
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Hard to move
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. A little noisy
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Not ideal for people sleeping alone
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Not available in sizes smaller than queen

I've tested several high-end mattresses in the $5,000 and higher range. The $10,000 Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed is the only one I'd consider buying. It has many of the same features as the Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed , but the built-in heating and cooling system sets it apart from all other adjustable airbeds.

With the SleepIQ app, you control the temperature of your side of the bed. For example, you can schedule it to warm up before bedtime, cool down while you sleep, and warm up again when it's time to wake up. Your partner can set a different heating and cooling schedule for their side. The heating system made a noticeable noise when engaged. My wife joked that it was like jet engines starting up. Yet, at no time did the bed's noises disrupt our sleep.

The app is also useful for adjusting the incline of the bed frame that the Climate360 comes with. You can also select your "Sleep Number," one of the 20 firmness options. My Sleep Number was 55, a smidge firmer than average. This provided my ideal comfort and support while side sleeping. As I shifted positions, the air automatically adjusted to keep the support consistent, nurturing outstanding sleep quality.

I track my sleep quality using a smartwatch, but the Climate360 has a built-in sleep tracker that produces accurate metrics. The app offers sleep advice based on your stats.

I tested the Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed in split king size, which is basically two twin XL mattresses next to each other. Because of this, the bed had the best motion isolation I've ever tested. It easily passed the bowling ball test and had the lowest vibrometer reading. I was well supported when lying on the edge, but the side sank more than average when I sat on it. Still, this is the best luxury mattress for couples who can afford it.

What to look for in mattresses for couples

We have a whole guide on how to choose a mattress , including the differences between mattress types and firmness recommendations based on sleeping styles and body type.

In this section, I focus on specific characteristics couples should consider based on my five years of testing mattresses and my interviews with Logan Schneider , clinical associate professor of sleep medicine at Stanford Sleep Center, and Rebecca Robbins, PhD , associate scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and instructor at Harvard Medical School .

  • Size: Schneider recommends choosing a mattress large enough for both people to sleep undisturbed. "You can always get closer on a larger mattress, but you can't get further away on a small mattress," he said. For an average-sized adult, that's a queen or larger. Check out our mattress size chart for detailed recommendations.
  • Edge support: Good edge support goes hand in hand with size because it gives you more space to sleep comfortably. You don't want to feel like you'll fall off the bed when your partner encroaches on your side.
  • Motion isolation: "Movement itself can be disruptive to the other individual," said Schneider. He recommends finding a mattress that dampens motion transfer so that your sleep isn't disturbed when your partner tosses and turns in the night.
  • Comfort: A comfortable bed is crucial for a good night's sleep. If you and your partner have similar firmness preferences, this isn't a problem. However, if you have drastically different needs, consider an adjustable airbed with different firmness levels on each side. If this isn't an option, choose a bed with a long, risk-free home trial so you can return it if it doesn't fit your needs.
  • Ease of movement and bounce: These features are helpful for sexually active couples. They make it easy to change positions and engage in intimate activities.

Schneider and Robbins said couples should consider sleeping apart to improve their sleep quality. "If it means sleeping in different bedrooms, either because one partner snores or one partner isn't happy with the mattress, then that is absolutely OK," said Robbins. "Furthermore, it will allow you to be a better partner to the person that you share your life with. So really, prioritizing sleep is really critical for couples."

My wife and I went through a " sleep divorce " and are much happier for it.

How we tested mattresses for couples

I slept on all mattresses in this guide for 14 nights or more. Additionally, I put them through several objective tests to assess their suitability for couples, including tests for comfort, motion dampening, and edge support.

Here are some of the test results for the main attributes we tested:

Here are the main attributes we look for and how we test them:

Comfort: When sleeping on each mattress, I noted the most comfortable positions, my sleep quality measured by a Garmin Forerunner 945 watch, and how cool it stayed. I measured heat dissipation using a laser thermometer to compare the mattresses' surface temperatures before bed, right after getting up, and two minutes after getting up.

Edge support: I conducted two tests to evaluate this. First, I sat on the mattress's edge and measured the sinkage. I considered the edge support good if it was less than 4 inches. Secondly, I positioned myself on the edge and slowly rolled closer until I fell off. The bed provided excellent edge support if my body reached a 45-degree angle before falling.

Motion isolation: I assessed motion isolation using two tests. First, I dropped a bowling ball from 4 feet above the mattress, so it landed a foot from a soda can. If the can toppled, it indicated poor motion isolation, but if it remained upright, it meant excellent motion dampening. Secondly, I put a vibrometer on the side opposite from where the bowling ball landed and compared the vibration intensities. The split-king Sleep Number Climate360 had the lowest vibration value at 5.5 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale . Of the beds in this guide, the Nest Bedding Finch had the highest, a still respectable 7.4.

Bounce: Bounce is a secondary measurement I take during the bowling ball test. I note how much the bowling ball bounces after it hits the mattress.

Trial and warranty: I closely read the details of the warranty and home trial to look for loopholes, like charges for restocking and return shipping. You should generally expect a 10-year warranty and 100-night trial period, with free returns.

Couples mattresses FAQs

How do you choose a bed for couples.

The best way to decide if a bed is right for you and your partner is to sleep on it. So, a long, risk-free home trial is a must. When picking a mattress, firmness is a good guide. Beds with average firmness will appeal to most sleepers, though stomach sleepers may want a firmer mattress. For more detailed advice, see the "What to look for in mattresses for couples" section above.

What is the best mattress thickness for couples?

Schneider said this is a difficult question because there is no scientific research on the best mattress thickness. He recommends going with whatever thickness feels comfortable and supportive. After testing more than 80 mattresses, I've found those 10 inches or thicker are likelier to be supportive and relieving.

Which type of mattress is best for couples?

Adjustable airbeds feature independently adjustable firmness levels and can come in "split" sizes that are like sleeping in separate beds, decreasing motion transfer. If an adjustable bed is out of your price range, consider a hybrid mattress. The coils tend to offer more edge support and improved motion isolation.

What mattress firmness is best for couples sharing a bed?

While firmness is a matter of personal preference, mattresses with average firmness tend to appeal to the broadest range of sleepers and are more likely to be best for couples. However, if you and your partner are back or stomach sleepers, you might want to consider a medium-firm bed.

What size mattress should couples buy?

"Based on the average person size, I typically suggest maybe a queen or larger," Schneider said. "Anytime you add a third party to that — be it an animal, be it a small child — I think a king-size bed."

What is the best mattress with different firmness on each side?

If you can afford it, the Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed is the best mattress for couples with different firmness preferences since you can completely customize your experience. If you can't afford the $10,000 price tag, consider one of Sleep Number's other mattresses. They all have independently adjustable firmness settings on each side of the mattress.
