Imagine Your Dream Vacation

Hotel excellence faqs.

Update Feb. 2024: All Preferred Travel Agencies (PTAs) must take action by March 31, 2024 to maintain Preferred Travel Agency status. View your Hotel Excellence! dashboard to check your status. Agencies whose Hotel Excellence! dashboard indicates that they are Standard continue to have the ability to complete the requirements to become a Preferred Travel Agency location and enjoy the associated benefits. Marriott Bonvoy® membership is now a requirement to access the Hotel Excellence! training and receive all associated Hotel Excellence! benefits. Enter your Marriott Bonvoy Member Number in the Marriott Bonvoy Membership section at the top of your MI Partner Privileges profile.

Preferred Travel Agency Program (PTA) & Recertification

What is the preferred travel agency program.

Marriott’s Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) program allows ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA accredited travel agencies to earn a preferred commission (currently 10%) for all transient commissionable bookings made across Marriott’s portfolio of brands worldwide. The PTA program has two criteria: (1) An agency owner or manager must electronically agree to the PTA commitment, and (2) the agency must have at least one qualified travel advisor, who has entered their Marriott Bonvoy® Member Number into their MI Partner Privileges profile and confirmed the accuracy of the other profile information, for each agency location. Marriott Bonvoy membership is a requirement to access the Hotel Excellence! training and receiving all Hotel Excellence! benefits.

Agencies not fulfilling all the criteria will be a Standard Travel Agency with Marriott and receive  8% commission on all transient commissionable bookings.

Design Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy®, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and MGM Collection do not participate in the program.

What do I need to do to maintain my PTA status?

Annually, an agency owner/manager must: 1) agree to the terms of being a Preferred Travel Agency and update their personal profile; and 2) have at least one qualified graduate of Marriott’s Hotel Excellence! training program that includes the “Core” training and the annual Continuing Education training for the certification cycle. Agencies that have not met both criteria by the end of the certification cycle will revert to Standard Travel Agency status. Travel agency owners/managers can view their Preferred Travel Agency status on their Dashboard at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com . Fulfillment of these requirements must be met for each agency ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA number. Please note, by registering or updating your profile, you agree that we may provide your agency owner with your Hotel Excellence! graduation status as it relates to your agency maintaining their Preferred Travel Agency status and benefits.

What is the duration of my PTA status?

PTA status is valid for the current certification cycle, typically one year. Agencies must act by the current recertification deadline to maintain their status for the next cycle. Recertification requirements are communicated to the email provided by the agency owner/manager in sufficient time for the criteria to be met by the recertification deadline. However, each agency owner/manager should log in to their Hotel Excellence! account to review their PTA status and ensure all requirements have been met.

What is my agency committing to when we agree to the PTA Terms?

The Preferred Travel Agency Terms can be found by clicking on the “PTA Commitment” badge on the agency owner/manager’s dashboard at hotelexcellence.marriott.com . This badge will only appear if you answer “yes” to the question on your profile, “Are you the Owner, Manager, or Senior Executive of this Company / Agency?”

What happens if my agency does not fulfill the criteria by the recertification deadline?

If an agency does not fulfill the PTA criteria by the end of the recertification deadline, they will default to Standard Travel Agency status and receive an 8% commission on all transient commissionable reservations until such time as the requirements have been fulfilled.

Will my agency be allowed to fulfill the requirements after the recertification deadline?

If the recertification deadline is missed, agencies can recertify at any time. However, any lapse in PTA criteria will change an agency’s status to Standard Travel Agency with an 8% commission. Once the PTA criteria has been met, Marriott will elevate the agency to Preferred Travel Agency status and 10% commission will apply for stays departing from that point forward on all transient commissionable reservations, provided these requirements are maintained.

Will I receive reminders about the annual recertification requirements?

Marriott will send three email reminders  to the email address on file as the PTA Commitment signer for the Preferred Travel Agency owner/manager before the recertification deadline. It is the responsibility of the owner/manager to have a valid email address in their profile and to log in to their Hotel Excellence! account before the recertification deadline to ensure all requirements have been met.

How can I ensure that Marriott has my agency's email address so that we receive notifications?

Agency owners/managers should create a MI Partner Privileges profile with their email address, and attest that they are the owner/manager or other senior executive affiliated with the agency location so they can agree to the Preferred Travel Agency terms.  A verification email will be sent requesting confirmation of receipt.  Once verified, the email address will be used to communicate important information about that agency location's PTA status; therefore, it is recommended the email be updated as needed.

I have multiple ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations within my organization. May I commit to the PTA terms collectively for them?

Each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA number must register at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com and agree to the PTA terms individually.

How can I see which ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations in my organization have HE! graduates, and how can I track when my consultants recertify?

Each agency owner/manager should create an account at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com to access their Agency Dashboard. The Dashboard will clearly indicate the following for each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA location: a) If a qualified graduate of the training is needed; b) whether the PTA terms have been agreed to; c) whether the agency is “Preferred” or “Standard”.

Will my preferred commission levels apply to the group business I place with Marriott?

No. The Preferred Travel Agency program applies only to commissionable transient bookings. Group commissions will be paid in accordance with the signed Group Sales Agreement.

Where can I obtain information about Marriott’s commission policies and procedures?

View Marriott’s Commission Policy and Commission FAQs to link to frequently asked questions regarding commissions .

Hotel Excellence! (HE!) Training & Required Recertification

What is the hotel excellence program.

Hotel Excellence! is an online training program, specifically designed for professional travel professionals, to help them navigate the ever-changing hotel industry and to help their clients choose hotels that best suit their needs and style. The training is accessible on a multi-device platform to allow maximum flexibility and convenience. In addition to the “Core” training, annual Continuing Education recertification training will be developed and required for eligibility for Fam-Tastic benefits. There are also supplemental modules available that are optional and allow travel professionals the opportunity to customize their learning to best fit their needs.

How will HE! training benefit me as a travel professional?

In addition to the robust knowledge provided within HE!, qualified graduates gain exclusive access to Marriott’s industry-leading Fam-Tastic familiarization rate program, offering discounted rates at the majority of Marriott properties. (See the Fam-Tastic topic for more details on this exclusive program.) Graduates also receive Continuing Educations Units: 10 CEUs towards the maintenance of the Travel Institute’s CTA/CTC certification, or 8 CEUs for Association of Canadian Travel Agencies certification or 10 CLIA credits for CLIA agents.

How will completion of the HE! training program benefit my agency?

The training will familiarize agents with Marriott’s robust portfolio of brands and what makes each brand unique. It will also help travel consultants work more efficiently, close more sales, and benefit your agency’s bottom line. This is important as the travel and tourism landscape changes, customers book travel in new ways, and new waves of travelers are emerging. More than ever before, travel agencies must demonstrate their value and expertise, and the HE! training is a smart investment for your agency. The HE! training is available at no cost, and agencies who employ travel professionals that are qualified advisors who have successfully completed the training are eligible to become a Marriott Preferred Travel Agency.

How do I access the training?

Hotel Excellence! training is accessible at  hotelexcellence.marriott.com  after completing your MI Partner Privileges account with your Marriott Bonvoy® Member Number. All Core, Continuing Education and optional training modules can be found via the Hotel Excellence! dashboard. Log in to hotelexcellence.marriott.com and from the top of your dashboard at the top right, click the “?” icon to view a site tour on how to access the training as well as a quick tour of other features available on your HE! dashboard.

Do I need to complete all of the modules in the Core Training/curriculum?

No. The training has been designed to allow travel professionals the flexibility to choose their own learning journey. To satisfy the requirements for the Core training, complete one module from the Introduction section, two modules from the Brands Training section and three modules from the Foundational Training section. There are also optional modules in the Supplemental Modules section to help travel professionals strengthen their industry knowledge.

Can I complete the training on my mobile device or tablet?

Yes. The training is accessible from most web-enabled devices and browsers. Advisors can learn at their own pace by stopping and restarting the training seamlessly.

Is there an app I need to download?

No. HE! training is accessible on the following browsers and devices. The website and training will adapt to any web-enabled device the agent is using.

Browsers: Chrome & Edge (83+), Safari (14+), Firefox(77+), Opera (68+), Samsung Internet (11+), Android (81+)

Devices: Android 8.0+ (Oreo), iPads® (Except The iPad® Mini) And iPhones® (version iOS 13+)

How much time should I allow to complete the training?

On average, users take just under two hours to complete the Core HE! training and 30 minutes to complete the annual Continuing Education training.

Why has the sign in process to Marriott's Hotel Excellence! website and Fam-Tastic booking changed?

Privacy and security are a top priority for Marriott, and we know how important it is to protect your data. We've changed the sign-in process to be more secure, ensuring the highest standards of security, while streamlining your experience across all of our Intermediary Partner Program websites.

How does Marriott use my information after I have registered for the training?

Marriott will use your email address to send you important updates about your Hotel Excellence! recertification status. Your email address will also be used to send you Reserved for You, the exclusive e-Newsletter for graduates of Hotel Excellence!, should you opt in. From time to time, and only upon request by your agency, Marriott may identify you to your agency as a graduate of Hotel Excellence! to confirm your agency is meeting the requirements as a Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) and receiving the PTA status and benefits.  View our Terms of Use and Privacy Center for additional information.

Marriott Travel Agents: What you need to know about "Fam-tastic" Rates?

Marriott Travel Agent Rates: Save 50% with Fam-tastic Rates!

What Travel Advisors need to know about Standard Travel Agent Rates vs. the deeply discounted Marriott Fam-tastic Rates.

What is the Marriott Fam-tastic Program?

Fam-tastic travel agent rate requirements:, how to book a marriott “fam-tastic” travel agent rate, how to book a standard marriott travel agent rate, marriott travel agent rates – how much can you save as travel agent, marriott hotel excellence program, marriott travel agent benefits, travel agency owner benefits, terms of the marriott fam-tastic program, hyatt travel agent rates: how advisors save up to 50% at hyatt, ihg travel agent rates: how travel advisors save 50% with ihg, hilton travel agent rates: how advisors save 25-50% at hilton, frequently asked questions.

In this article, we dig into the Marriott travel agent familiarization program, called “Fam-tastic”, and review how to qualify for these deeply discounted rates vs. a standard Marriott Travel Agent rate. It’s more complicated than you might think.

Here is everything you need to know about Marriott Travel Agent Rates.

“Fam-Tastic” is Marriott’s rate familiarization program, which allows registered travel agents to book special rates at Marriott properties across the globe.   It’s a way to let travel agents see Marriott properties at discounted prices so they can promote them to their customers.

Famtastic Rate Reservation Page

The Fam-tastic program is recognized as the industry’s premier travel agent familiarization rate program and is offered as an exclusive benefit to qualified travel consultants who have successfully completed the Hotel Excellence!  Core training and the current year’s annual Continuing Education are employed by a valid ARC/IATA/TIDS/CLIA agency.

The Fam-tastic rate is a discounted rate that varies by brand and is subject to availability based on Marriott’s Travel Agent Rate Ratio Policy .

Qualifying travel agents are eligible to book Fam-tastic stays (maximum four nights per stay, one visit per participating hotel per calendar year) at participating hotels.

Marriott Travel Agent Rates vs. Fam-tastic Rates:

It’s important to note that Marriott has two different types of discounted travel agent rates:

  • The “Fam-tastic” Travel Agent Rate, and
  • The Standard Travel Agent Rate.

Any registered travel agent can book a standard travel agent rate. However, If you want to book a “Fam-tastic” rate there are some additional steps you need to go through.

To qualify for Fam-Tastic discounted rates and benefits, travel agents have to do the following:

  • Complete the Hotel Excellence! Core training.
  • Complete the latest Continuing Education training.
  • Ensure your profile has been updated.
  • US advisors must also have a valid IATAN VER or CLIA EMBARC ID number added to their Hotel Excellence! profile.
“Fam-Tastic rates are for the exclusive use of active accredited travel agents who are graduates of Hotel Excellence! and have completed the current year’s continued education training (“Travel Agents”).  Fam-Tastic rates are designed to afford travel gents the ability to familiarize themselves with Marriott hotels and resorts. Fam-Tastic rates may not be used by anyone other than the travel agent. For clarity, Fam-Tastic rates may not be used by a travel agent’s family, friends, clients, or any other third party. As soon as a your Hotel Excellence! dashboard indicates that you are “Qualified” for Fam-Tastic, stays can be booked immediately.” Marriott

Fam-Tastic rate reservations must be made in advance and can only be made via marriott.com/travelagents .

You’ll need to Log in with your MI Partner Privileges credentials. If you meet the requirements to qualify for the Fam-Tastic rate, the booking page will appear, and you may continue to search and book your Fam-Tastic reservation.

Standard Travel Agent rates are much easy to book. You just need to go to the Marriott booking page and book a room with the Marriott travel agent rate code (“TVL”).

  • Enter code “TVL” in the “Corporate/Promotional Code” box under the “Special Rates” section of the Marriott booking page
  • Then enter your travel destination, and dates and hit the “find hotels” button to reveal the results.

The process is the same as when you book a room with a Marriott Corporate Code or a Marriott Employee Discount Rate .

That said, you will still need to provide travel agent credentials when checking in, so this is not a rate code just anyone can use.

Marriott Travel Agent Rate Code TVL

Here are the credential and ID requirements for using the Marriott travel agent rate code:

  • At the time of hotel check-in, the travel advisor must provide appropriate credentials. For travel agents associated with a US agency: an IATAN photo ID Card or CLIA EMARC Photo ID Card is required. For travel agents associated with an agency outside the US or for advisors associated with a AAA location: a valid photo ID and a business card or employment verification letter on the letterhead of their agency are required.
  • If the appropriate credentials are not presented at check-in, the hotel will charge the travel advisor the Travel Agent rate or the lowest rate available to the general public for each night of the stay.

I must admit that I was surprised at how little you actually can save with these rates.  There are a couple of issues:

  • Many Marriott hotels don’t offer them, however, most of the resorts in vacation destinations do offer travel agent rates.
  • The savings are not that big. I have seen anywhere from 10-40%, depending on location and time of year.

Don’t get me wrong, a 10-40% discount is still saving, but I would have expected the travel agent rates to be in the 50% or more discount range to motivate advisors to check out the properties and promote them to their customers.  Here are a couple of rate examples:

Example 1:  New York City

marriott fam-tastic

Example #2:  Hawaii

What’s the difference between Standard Travel Agent Rates and Marriott Fam-Tastic Rates?

There are a couple of key differences between the two Marriott travel agent rates including:

  • The discount is typically higher for the Fam-tastic rate.
  • You can only book 1 room (4 nights maximum) at the given property with a Fam-Tastic Rate, but you can book 2 rooms with a standard travel agent rate and stay as long as you want.
  • You can only book a Fam-Tastic rate at a participating Marriott International property one time per calendar year. Standard Travel Agent rates do not have this limit.
  • You have to go through additional training to qualify for a Fam-Tastic rate, whereas any accredited travel agent can book a Travel Agent Rate.
  • You can only book a Fam-Tastic rate through the Marriott Travel Agent portal, whereas you can book a standard Travel Agent Rate through the Marriott website.
  • Reservations for the Fam-Tastic rate must be made upon logging into hotelexcellence.marriott.com .
  • The rate is available at participating properties for a minimum of one (1) night and a maximum of four (4) nights per stay.
  • Rates are subject to availability and black-out dates. Advance reservations are required.
  • Travel agents may book a maximum of one (1) room per stay using the Fam-Tastic rate.
  • There is no limit on the number of stays the travel advisor may book in a calendar year using the Fam-Tastic rate, provided that the travel advisor may only use the Fam-Tastic rate one (1) time per calendar year at each participating property.
  • Rates will be shown in USD or local currency and do not include taxes, gratuities, resort or destination fees, or other mandatory fees.
  • The rate applies to one standard guest room based on double occupancy.

Thought airports were busy last summer? 2024 could be more packed — but less expensive

Sean Cudahy

If the summer travel seasons of 2022 and 2023 left you thinking airports couldn't possibly get any busier, think again.

There are just over two weeks until Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the season — and the start of the traditional summer travel rush.

From airlines to the Transportation Security Administration, all signs point to another record-breaker — though bits of good news are sprinkled in for travelers across everything from airline operations to ticket prices.

Want more aviation news? Sign up for TPG's free biweekly Aviation newsletter .

United Airlines this week announced it's forecasting its busiest Memorial Day weekend on record, with more than 3 million travelers expected to fly between May 23 and May 28 — up 5% from the comparable period last year.

marriott.com travel agents

It seems to be a sign of what's to come in June, July and August.

"This will be the biggest Memorial Day and summer travel season in United's 98-year history," United Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in a statement this week.

It's not just United.

Another record-setting summer expected

Despite swirling questions late last year about whether the so-called revenge travel trend following the removal of pandemic-related restrictions might continue, don't expect the crowds to taper off at airports.

American Airlines expects to serve some 72 million customers between May 17 and Sept. 3, the Fort Worth-based carrier said this week. Those travelers will be spread out across 10% more flights than last summer — helped, in part, by American reinstating regional service to some of the nation's smaller airports that have been slow to recover from the pandemic.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian voiced similarly bullish expectations on the company's April earnings call: "We expect a record spring and summer travel season," Bastian said.

High passenger demand means busy TSA checkpoints . The agency expects its own records, even after twice setting all-time single-day marks for passenger throughput in 2023 — a year that also saw seven of its 10 busiest days ever at checkpoints.

marriott.com travel agents

"We expect to see some days this summer that will be particularly busy, exceeding 3.1 million passengers per day," TSA Administrator David Pekoske told congressional leaders last month. That would top the agency's busiest day ever, which came on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2023.

Again this summer, intense demand for travel to Europe figures to be a major driver for demand.

Those travelers have plenty of flight options, too. Airlines will fly 8.5% more seats across the Atlantic to Europe than last year, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Map watching: The award for 'sexiest new route' of the year goes to ...

Closer to home, the growth is a bit more modest, with total domestic scheduled seats up 5.7% over last year. However, that domestic capacity is a bit more spread out, with numerous airlines shifting their route networks in recent months to account for a ton of competition in popular domestic cities (like Orlando and Las Vegas) and prime short-hop vacation spots in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Will air travel run smoothly this summer?

Of course, with busy airport concourses expected to translate to crowded skies, some may be wondering — or worrying — whether the air travel headaches of recent years could return if the U.S. aviation system again struggles to handle all the anticipated demand.

The good news: Flight cancellations have been trending downward for some time now.

Last summer, U.S. carriers canceled around 1.7% of flights between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, according to data from FlightAware.

That was far better than the 2.1% passengers witnessed in the meltdown-laden summer of 2022 (cancellations peaked that June at around 2.7% of flights, per FlightAware).

marriott.com travel agents

In fact, since Southwest Airlines' holiday operational disaster in December 2022, the U.S. air travel industry has largely been free of large-scale meltdowns, save for one multiday operational snafu in late June last summer that primarily affected United flights out of its Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) hub.

To date in 2024, U.S. airlines' cancellation rate has hovered at around 1.4%, and the pace of delays, at around 20%, has — so far — been better than last summer, too.

Air traffic control shortage remains a factor

That's not to say there won't be wrinkles.

Despite bolstered hiring efforts, the Federal Aviation Administration remains short of its target number of air traffic controllers. That can help fuel ground stops and delays, particularly when afternoon thunderstorms inevitably strike — and complicate the airspace.

For the second straight year, the FAA has allowed airlines more flexibility to reduce schedules in the busy New York corridor, where controller staffing is especially short of the agency's targets.

Airlines have praised the flexibility as a step to keep normal operations on track — particularly since the bevy of flights (and airline hubs) in the New York region can cause disruptions to cascade across the country when problems pop up there.

"I think your real wild card this summer is going to be the weather," predicted William Rankin, a longtime airport operations director now serving as an adjunct College of Aeronautics faculty member at the Florida Institute of Technology.

"Especially in the afternoon," Rankin added, "when there's thunderstorm activity."

marriott.com travel agents

One helpful change from summers past: In New York and beyond, airlines continue to fly more passengers with fewer — but larger — aircraft.

This June, July and August, carriers will operate about 3% fewer flights than a decade ago, in the summer of 2013, Cirium data shows. But they'll fly with 29% more seats.

Encouraging news for pricing

Travelers may also find good news when it comes to the price you pay to fly this summer.

Following encouraging pricing trends TPG reported last month, booking app Hopper's recent summer forecast noted domestic summer airfare is down about 6% versus this time last year. That, Hopper says, makes 2024 the first summer season with a price drop since 2020.

The drops are even steeper for flights to Europe.

marriott.com travel agents

What's more? Each of the three major summer holiday periods — Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day — are seeing a year-over-year fare drop, online travel agency Kayak reported this week.

That's not to say you should expect a bargain if you're hoping to fly those weeks. Hopper expects the weekend before July 4 (June 28-30) will be the summer's most expensive.

Hoping for a deal? You might try the first weekend in June, Aug. 15-17, or Aug. 22-24.

Flying amid a tumultuous 2024

Despite the reasons for optimism this summer, the season comes against a backdrop of concerning headlines in the aviation industry, from the midair emergency in January on an Alaska Airlines jet to maintenance snafus and a seemingly endless stream of news about plane-maker Boeing .

Yet, the International Air Transport Association reported 2023 was, by many metrics, the safest year on record for commercial aviation

Take it from 30-year FAA veteran Michael McCormick: "I wasn't so confident I'd arrive on time, but I was confident I would arrive safely," he said of a recent flight when we spoke in March.

Simply put, flying remains the safest form of travel.

But that's not to say you shouldn't plan ahead for the crowds.

As usual, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are key tools for skipping the worst lines.

marriott.com travel agents

Carrying a travel credit card with trip insurance protections — and knowing your rights as a flyer — can help save your wallet when problems do crop up. So can downloading your airline's app, which can help you rebook yourself in the event of a cancellation or long delay.

And as always, plan to get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. That's especially true if you're traveling May 23: That day, United says, will be the busiest of the Memorial Day weekend rush.
