Raj Bhavan Mumbai Address : Walkeshwar Road, Malabar Hill , Mumbai , Maharashtra , 400035 , India

The Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra. It is spread over an area of around 50 acres in the Malabar Hill. Sea surrounds the estate on three sides, which has lush green lawns, conserved forest areas and heritage bungalows.

Under the instructions of the Governor, Raj Bhavan is open for visitors and tourists. People can visit the banquet hall, see the buildings in the complex, and also watch the sun rising over the sea.

In the Raj Bhavan Mumbai tour, you’ll know about the history of Mumbai, the Maharashtra-Gujarat partition and the pre-independence India too.

And if you’re in luck, you can enjoy a cup of tea with the Governor too.

History of Raj Bhavan Mumbai

Before being the Governor’s official residence, Raj Bhavan used to be their Summer Residence. The Governor’s residence was in the Bombay Castle back then. It shifted to Apollo Street later and then, Parel.

In 1885, the residence was set up here, in Malabar Hill. And since then, it has served as the home for British governors and later, governors of Maharashtra.

Architecture of Raj Bhavan Mumbai

Among the picturesque greens lies the Raj Bhavan of Mumbai. The complex has five main buildings – Jal Bhushan, Jal Laxan, Jal Chintan, Jal Vihar and Jal Sabhagriha. Renovations have been carried on over the years, and the buildings have an amalgam of modern Indian style of architecture and British colonial style.

Jal Bhushan is a residential building and it also houses the waiting room for visitors, the conference room and the dining room, among other sections. The luxury Jal Laxan building has Maratha style of architecture and carvings. This is where the governor receives the heads of government.

Jal Chintan is built on a cliff and provides a view of the bay and the horizon. The Jal Vihar building houses a banquet hall and a ballroom. And the Jal Sabhagriha serves as the venue for oath ceremonies and other official events.

Why Raj Bhavan is a highlight of Mumbai city?

Raj Bhavan tour might not look attractive at the first sight from the information you can find online. There are several famous newspapers that wrote about it, but mainly from the point of beauty and maintenance of the place. For me, this experience was primarily about learning about governance, taxes, economy, administration, and history of Mumbai. It structured some of my knowledge I gained about Mumbai in a few months of living there.

Also, I see it as a useful experience for aspiring IAS officers. If you are an Indian citizen willing to build a career in a public service sector, visiting Raj Bhavan can give you some insight into this activity and motivation. Our group asked our guide hundreds of questions and he entertained them all and kindly answered.

Raj Bhavan was one of the highlight experiences for me in Mumbai, that’s why I’ve decided to write a separate post about it. Here are some specific questions I’d like to focus on:

  • What does a Raj Bhavan visit look like? Highlights
  • How to visit Raj Bhavan in Mumbai?
  • How to reach Raj Bhavan in Mumbai

Other useful information about visiting Raj Bhavan

What does a raj bhavan visit look like.

Raj Bhavan visit

There are four Raj Bhavans in Maharashtra: Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Mahabaleshwar. Raj Bhavan in Mumbai has an area of 50 acres and employs 230 people. It has been opened to visitors by current governor only a few years back with a goal to share more information with the public and bring more transparency into governance process.

In just one visit, you can relive the history of Mumbai from Bombay Presidency which included a big part of Western India, Sindh province (nowadays Pakistan) and Aden (currently Yemen) during British Raj to the formation of Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital city. Raj Bhavan was the first place where the map of Maharashtra state was presented to the public.

There is a visiting group of 10-20 people which travels with a guide to important points of the Governor’s residence by electric vehicle and by foot. The tour covers several areas, here are some of the most memorable highlights:

Visit the halls where important functions are held

Raj Bhavan Banquet Hall

The tour starts with some general history of Raj Bhavan and visiting official premises where the Governor meets President, Prime Minister, foreign diplomats visiting Mumbai. You will be guided through several halls and get to know about special features of their architecture and what kind of events are held there.

The furniture, fans, mirrors and some lamps date back to the British Governance era. These details of interiors with some modern elements unite the history of the past and current days.

Did you know? Raj Bhavan has become the Governor’s residence since 1885.   Back in 1665, the Governor appointed by the East India Company resided at the Bombay castle (Fort area). Afterward, the residence was shifted to Parel . After the outbreak of Bombay Plague, the residence was based in Malabar Hill.

See the skyline of Mumbai at the sunrise

Raj Bhavan sunrise

After the history tour through impressive interiors, you will be invited to the sunrise point, where you can see Mumbai Skyline, the sea and sun slowly rising above it. This is one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever experienced.

As you might know, Raj Bhavan is surrounded by sea from three parts, so there will be beautiful views every now and then.

Visit Devi Mandir where religious functions are held

Located behind the heritage buildings of the complex, it’s a very small temple dedicated to a nameless goddess. Every year in July – August it gathers thousands of people at an annual jatra(fair). This was the only day when the residence was opened to the public until recently. Sidenote: On the way to the temple, there is a 10000 years old rock overlooking the sea.

Explore a peacock conservation area

Raj Bhavan Peacock

To all nature lovers –  there is a special conservation area for peacocks. You will be able to see a few of them freely roaming around. There are around 25 peacocks and it might be the only place you can see them in such a hustle and bustle city as Mumbai.

Also, there is a family of mongoose that regularly receive food and care from the staff. These are the animals I’ve noticed, but our guide told that there are also various birds living in the green territory.

Live the slogan of Atithi Devo Bhava

The formal part of the tour ended in the garden singing the national anthem of India. After this, the hosts offered tea/coffee with biscuits to all the guests and discussion continued in an informal environment. During the whole tour, the organizers were very polite and courteous.

Governor Raj Bhavan

While our group was in the garden, there was an unplanned visit of C. Vidyasagar Rao – the governor of Maharashtra. He stopped for a few minutes to greet everyone and ask for the feedback.

Note: if you would like to meet the Governor, please check his schedule. Our group was lucky to briefly meet him during the visit.

The last but not the least, there are some actors and public leaders living in the same area. From the words of our guide, the film actors like Jackie Shroff and Tiger Shroff pay a visit at times as they live in the same neighbourhood. They are in friendly relation with all staff of the governor’s residence.

How to visit Raj Bhavan?

Raj Bhavan pictures

If you would like to visit Raj Bhavan, firstly, you need to book an appointment online . I recommend registering at least two weeks in advance before the desired date as confirmation might take time. Generally, the booking is available one month in advance. You can register up to 10 accompanying people with you.

There is a symbolic fee for processing your application – 25 INR. Remember which ID proof you mention in the application as you will need to carry it (original + a photo copy) with you on the day of the visit.

How to reach Raj Bhavan in Mumbai?

Raj Bhavan is located in Malabar Hill in Mumbai. The nearest local train station is Grant Road and Charni road (Western Railways). Both stations are around 3.5km away from Raj Bhavan. From Grant Road you can hire a cab, it shouldn’t cost you more than 50 INR.

If you start from Navi Mumbai, you need to catch a local train around 4.30 a.m. if you want to make it on time. The cab from Navi Mumbai will cost you around 500 INR.

Raj Bhavan Mumbai pictures: is photography allowed?

Raj Bhavan sunrise point

Yes, but you will need to be ethical about it and consult your guide. There are some spaces where you can take pictures. Please don’t click everything here and there as it might close opportunity for others in future to take any pictures.

Note please that professional cameras and videography is not allowed. You can carry your mobile phone though.

What to take with you to Raj Bhavan Mumbai?

Try to take with you minimum stuff during the visit – phone, water, confirmation of appointment, wallet, ID proof. There is a bag scanner at the entrance. Though there are small lockers (confirm which stuff you can leave there), better to avoid this extra check-up and procedure.

Visit Raj Bhavan Mumbai

  • You can visit Raj Bhavan from October to mid-June. It closed for visitors in summers during monsoon season since there are heavy rains and winds.
  • Try to reach around 6 a.m. at the Upper Gate of Raj Bhavan. They start on-time at 6.15 a.m. Late entries after 7 a.m. are not permitted as it’s a huge territory and the visitors travel by electric mini-bus.
  • The tour lasts 2 – 2.5 hours depending on the number of questions. Raj Bhavan is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
  • I recommend dressing smart-casual. Jeans, shirts, t-shirts with decent prints are fine. There is no dress code as such, but this is a place where are held official meetings, so shorts and tops might not look appropriate.

I hope this post provided an in-depth information about Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. It was one of the most memorable experiences for me in this city. I don’t know for how long it will be open to the public, thus I highly recommend visiting it.

Best time to visit Raj Bhavan Mumbai

You can visit Raj Bhavan throughout the year. But it would be better to avoid the times of heavy monsoon as that would come in the way of your visit. You can visit here from October to June. The weather will also be favourable around this time for a peaceful trip around the complex.

About Raj Bhavan Mumbai

Spread across an area of 50 acres, Raj Bhavan is the official address of the residing of the Governors in Maharashtra. The building of Raj Bhavan is as picturesque as it can be with sprawling lawns and a sea view. This heritage bunglow is surrounded by the Sea on all three sides and it is a treat to watch sunrise from this spot. Raj Bhavan is open to the visitors only on the basis of instructions from the Governor. The complex, building, and banquet hall is open for the visitors to take a stroll around.  After a visit there you can get a lot of insight about the history of Maharashtra, the partition of Gujarat and Maharashtra and the pre-independence era. So a visit to this place will be enriching and an educative one for the visitors.

History of Raj Bhavan Mumbai

Previously Raj Bhavan was the Summer Residence of the British Governor Generals. In the pre-independence era the Raj Bhavan was situated in Bombay Castle. Later in time it was shifted to Apollo Street first and then to Parel. However the present address of Raj Bhavan is in Malabar Hill. In 1885 it was shifted here and from then it became the official residence of the British Governor Generals. After the independence it has become the official residence of the Governors of Maharashtra.

Architecture of Raj Bhavan Mumbai

The Raj Bhavan complex is huge and looks straight out of a picture. It has a total of 5 buildings in the complex. Jal Laxan, Jal Vihar, Jal Bhushan, Jal Chintan and Jal Sabhagriha are the 5 buildings. The main structure of the buildings is from the pre-independence period and therefore has a distinct colonial touch in its style of architecture. However with further renovations later in the times it also has a specific modern Indian touch to it.

The Jal Laxan building is luxurious in its appearance. It is made following the Maratha style of architecture. Here the Governor receives the heads of the Government. Then comes the Jal Vihar building. This building has a ballroom and a banquet hall. Next is the Jal Bhushan building. This building is the main residential building of the Governor. It also has separate rooms for the visitors where the visitors can wait before meeting the Governor. This building also houses a dining room and a conference room. Then the Jal Chintan building which is a building built on a cliff. This building serves as a viewpoint overlooking the bay and the horizon. Last building is the Jal Sabhagriha which has halls for official ceremonies like Oath ceremonies and other official events.

Things to do at Raj Bhavan Mumbai

There is a special area in Raj Bhavan from where you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise. In the bustling city of Mumbai it is like a dream spot to watch a serene sunrise. With the Mumbai Skyline in background it is a splendid sight to observe and enjoy. If you can reach there at the correct time then this one is a must see. You would definitely enjoy this experience. Furthermore, you can follow up with a yoga session here too if you are interested.

Sightseeing

The area of the Raj Bhavan complex is huge but not all areas are open for visitors.  Raj Bhavan Mumbai entry for public  is restricted in some areas. But still there are beautiful places that you can visit inside the complex. Accompanied by a government official you can visit the few designated areas inside the campus. The places that are accessible for public viewing include the office and the banquet area. Majestic architecture of the banquet area and the alluring décor would make you stare with awe.

Exploring the lawns

The beauty of this place lies a lot in its forested area. The whole area is covered in lush greenery with various species of flowers and plants. You can even spot peacocks here along with other exotic birds.

Bunker Museum

This is one of the major attractions inside the Raj Bhavan complex. This one is a British era underground bunker. In present times this has been turned into a museum. Only a few years ago this place was discovered by the government officials and has been renovated into a museum. The area spreads across 15, 000 sq feet.

Temple visit

There is a temple inside the Raj Bhavan complex known as Devi Mandir. This temple worships the Mother Goddess by different names like Sakalai Devi and Sagar Mata. The ambience is very pure and serene here. You can enjoy some moments of tranquility here amidst the chaos in life. This place is surely a must visit spot in Raj Bhavan. The temple community also hosts a fair during the months of July or August that many people visit.

Things to remember during a visit to Raj Bhavan Mumbai

Mobiles are allowed inside the premises but DSLR cameras and other professional cameras are prohibited inside the complex.

A valid ID proof is required to enter the premises.

Here you would get an insight about Maharashtra during the British Era and the formation of the state of Maharashtra. It would be an enriching tour for the visitors for sure.

Now if there is a question regarding  how to visit Raj Bhavan , then you must remember that entry to the Raj Bhavan premise is done only at the discretion of the Governor. In no other way is it possible for you to enter the premises.

Only 10-20 visitors are allowed each day that too after a prior appointment and booking.

The tour timings are strict and begin at 6:15 am and end at 8 am.

Electric cars are available for a tour inside the complex that you can opt for. However you can also choose to visit the place walking on your foot as well. It is totally your own preference.

The tour inside is a guided tour. Mostly a Public Relations Officer or any other staff of the Governor’s Office acts as guide and would take you around the complex.

Ticket Booking Process

The exciting part is visitors are offered tea or coffee at the end of the tour. And if you are lucky enough you might get to enjoy that hot cuppa with the Governor himself. That would surely be an enriching and lifetime experience. What do you say?

Raj Bhavan Mumbai  is an elegant monument in Mumbai which is also a popular spot for tourists. The elegant building speaks a lot about the days that are gone now and also stands tall in its charm. On a fun vacation to Mumbai definitely include this place in your itinerary. I am sure you will be enriched with a beautiful experience after a visit to Raj Bhavan. Do let me know when you wish to travel to Mumbai or if you already stay there. Also do let me know if you have visited the place already or wish to visit soon. I would love to hear from you.

Rajbhavan Tour

Raj Bhavan is a residential palace situated in Dona Paula, Goa which serves as the official residence of the Hon’ble Governor of Goa. The sprawling 88 acres estate is located on a cape in the Goan capital, Panjim, known by the name "Palacio do Cabo". It hosts a number of residential suites along with the landmarks such as “Our Lady of the Cape Church”, “Grotto”, “The Estate”, “The Estate Beach”, “The Canon Point” and “The Jetty”. Till date these landmarks were not open for the general public, however the Hon’ble Governor has decided to open the doors of Raj Bhavan for the general public w.e.f 5th Jan 2019. Citizens will get to explore the grandeur and architectural beauty of Raj Bhavan, which will in turn generate revenue to the Government.

Canon Point

Down the estate, on the Western side, just 3 minutes' drive from the Raj Bhavan through the forests, is a spot, named as 'Cannon Point'. A suitable small park, pathways and lighting have been provided at this scenic spot. Two old cannons, which were located and lifted from the shore waters, are placed on pedestals here. This place offers a beautiful view of the sunset and the ever-surging tides of the Arabian sea lustily lashing at the shore.

Cannon Point

Our Lady Of The Cape Church

It is small yet extremely elegant. The main altar is of wood with very rich carvings and painted in white and gold. It was probably erected in the early seventeenth century alongwith the renovations and additions which had been made by the Governor-General D. Matias de Albuquerque.

OUR LADY OF THE CAPE CHURCH

A short distance away from the chapel, laterite steps lead down to a grotto where there is an altar dedicated to Santa Paula. Her image lies in a recumbent position. Her legs are maimed. Behind St. Paula is the image of Jesus Christ on a trefoil cross. How this statue of Santa Paula came to the grotto is shrouded in mystery. There is a legend that the figure was washed ashore. It was thrown back into the sea by the villagers but it kept coming back. It was then placed in the grotto by the villagers. There is a belief that anyone who prays to Santa Paula and lights a candle, has his wish fulfilled. Santa Paula lived from 347 to 404 AD. She hailed from an illustrious Roman family and was a staunch devotee of St. Jeromme. On losing her husband, she donated all her property to charity. She followed St. Jeromme on a pilgrimage to Bethlehem, alongwith her daughter and a group of Roman ladies who had vowed to lead a life of religious austerity. They settled down in a convent around the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The Feast of the Grotto is celebrated on 2nd August (evening). A large number of persons, living in the Raj Bhavan campus, as well as the nearby villages, attend this event.

GROTTO

The Raj Bhavan Estate, which is comprised of a spur surrounded on three sides by sea, has an area of about 80 acres. One massive laterite stone wall exists to the East, which serves as its boundary on that side. On the sea-shore, there are masonry walls, which have withstood the onslaught of time for over four centuries. The flat table land of the spur, which is about 3/4th of the total land, has steep side slopes. About 5 hectares of the flat table land is occupied by buildings, gardens, lawns, and the remaining is full of vegetations, consisting of large number of species of trees, plants, shrubs, creepers, etc. Adding new species of trees in large number has been an annual phenomenon. There is a kitchen garden, where seasonal vegetables are grown.

Sealife Family Resort Hotel 5 stars

Hotel in Konyaalti Beach, Antalya

Directly facing blue-flagged Konyaalti Beach, Sealife is an extensive resort with facilities and activities for the whole family. The whole experience was wonderful. From the moment we landed in Antalya, we were picked up by hotel-arranged taxi. It was clean and the driver was polite and very nice. The location of the hotel is the best! The staff at the reception desk were absolutely amazing. Check-in was a breeze and the room was bigger than I imagined. The room was clean and very quiet (soundproof walls). Everything about the room was great. They made sure it stayed that way during our stay. The service at this hotel is just wonderful. The staff will go above and beyond to satisfy your needs. They genuinely smile, acknowledge your presence and truly make you feel at home. Food was awesome. Each day, the hotel had different cuisines from different parts of the world. Lots of choices and, honestly, sometimes my family had a hard time choosing what to eat. Delicious meals: be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Never ending supply of snacks and drinks throughout the day. Many thanks to the staff at the restaurant for their admirable service. They were awesome. Entertainment for the guests was great. Different programs and shows everyday. They made us laugh, touched, and excited. In addition the kids' show from hotel's mini club was doing wonders to us. There is such a joy and pride, as a parent, seeing your kid included in the show. Kids' mini club was awesome for my daughter. She loved it and insisted of attending everyday. She made friends and the club was great place for the kids to enjoy lots of activities tailored for kids. Kudos to mini club team. Pools and the beach: There was no shortage of fun: Water games in the hotel pools for both adults and kids and if you wanted the beach, then swimming or simply basking under the sun while having a constant access to drinks. SPA: My wife had out-of-the-world experience in the spa. She was so happy and deeply satisfied with the massage.
