Making a copy of YouTube videos on an iPad or iPhone is really easy, but the same can’t be said if you want to save YouTube videos on your Mac.

The most curious thing about this particular issue is that YouTube allows YouTube videos to be downloaded to an iPad or iPhone (if you subscribe to YouTube Premium , $11.99/£11.99 a month, one-month free trial). The same is true of Disney, Netflix and Prime , who also allow downloads to mobile devices, but not the Mac. For some reason these services do not seem to want people to download anything to a Mac, perhaps this is because they offer apps for mobile devices and therefore have control over how those recordings are stored and how long they are available for (YouTube Premium only lets subscribers download video and music on to mobile devices, and it will only be available to watch offline for 30 days, for example).

Since there are no apps for YouTube or the other streaming services on the Mac, the content owners won’t have control over how the recordings are used. Obviously the solution would be for Mac versions of the apps to be offered, but as yet this hasn’t happened.

There are also free and paid for apps that will also do this for you with a little more finesse, and we will include some of these options below too. In our experience the free apps are usually more trouble than they are worth and potentially dangerous. (If you see a warning that you need to install Flash, for example, it really could be a scam, or at worse malware!)

Before we start, we have to point out that you should be aware of copyright issues. Firstly, you shouldn’t download someone else’s video and then, for example, upload it to your own YouTube channel or use it to promote your business. You should also note that downloading YouTube videos goes against YouTube’s terms of service. The company specifies that “You shall not download any Content unless you see a ‘download’ or similar link displayed by YouTube.”

How to download YouTube videos on a Mac for free

It is really easy to download YouTube video for free with software that comes with your Mac. You don’t need to download an app at all. Since Mojave, macOS has had an in-built screen recording feature. You can capture what is playing on your screen and the audio. Just note that Mac mini doesn’t have an inbuilt microphone so you would need a microphone to capture audio if you are using a Mac mini.

Option 1: Screen capture with audio on a Mac

• Press Command + Shift + 5.
• Click on Record selected portion.

• Click Options and make sure your microphone is selected.
• Click Record.
• Now start playing the video.
• Wait for it to finish and then stop the video. To stop the screen recording (you’ll find a stop button in the menu at the top of the screen or in the box as seen in the image below.)

This is without a doubt the best way to record from YouTube on a Mac. However, a short video can take up a lot of space on your Mac, and obviously it is necessary to wait while the whole video plays through.

Option 2: Record the screen using QuickTime

Before Apple merged the tools for screen recording with the screen grab tools in macOS Mojave, Mac users could use QuickTime to record the screen on their Mac. Since Monterey, if you try to screen capture using QuickTime it just defaults to the same tools as are offered by Command + Shift + 5, however, if you have an older version of macOS this is how it works:

• Open QuickTime Player (press Command + Space and start typing QuickTime).
• Go to the menu at the top of the screen and choose File > New Screen Recording.

• Click on the red button.

• Now click on Record.
• Start the YouTube video playing (make sure the sound is on).
• Once the YouTube video has played you can click on the stop button in the menu at the top of the screen.
• The video will open so you can check it before saving it.

There are also some solutions on offer that will download the YouTube video for you, rather than you have to record the screen of your Mac while playing the video. This might be a preferred option if you don’t have the time to sit and wait for an hour of Peppa Pig to play. It should also result in much smaller file sizes.

ViDL is a great free YouTube and video downloader for Mac

ViDL is a YouTube download app for Mac. It comes from Ole Moritz, developer of the amazing Pythonista and Editorial iOS apps. ViDL is a simple wrapper for the youtube-dl command-line tool, so if you already use that, you don’t need this. But the app is far easier to use than a command-line tools. Plus, it offers a built-in browser, in case you need to log in to a site to get access to the target videos. There’s even a ViDL Safari extension.

I download YouTube videos all the time. Specifically, I grab live versions of songs so I can see the guitarist play, and get an idea of how they played the song while I transcribe it. A download is essential for me, because I run the clips back and forth, and slow them down in a dedicated app ( AudioStretch ). Or I do the same, only with tutorial videos.

On iOS, I’ve experienced limited success using shortcuts to do this. On Mac, the process should work more reliably, as youtube-dl isn’t subject to Apple’s App Store rules and regulations.

To use ViDL, just download it and put it in your Applications folder like any other app. The app contains youtube-dl, and the ffmpeg video-processing binaries it requires to run, so you don’t need to install anything else. If you want to use ViDL’s built-in Safari extension, you must enable it inside Safari’s preferences. If you can’t use the Safari extension, a bookmarklet does the same thing.

Click and play

Then, when you’re on a webpage with the video you want to download, just click on the bookmarklet or the extension button in the Safari window. Youtube-dl, and therefore ViDL, supports a huge number of sites , so you should be good wherever you go. ViDL also supports playlists.

You also can grab only the audio from a video, if that’s what you prefer. Finally, you can specify a download location on your Mac.

I can’t see a way to specify the quality of the downloads. Some default to 720p, others to 360p. I have asked the developer if it’s possible to choose.

ViDL is great. It’s simple, it works, and it comes from a developer I trust. Oh, and it’s completely free.

It’s no secret that using YouTube in the browser on your iPhone or iPad is a rather unpleasant experience. And in many ways, YouTube’s “native” app isn’t much better. This is where a new Safari extension called “Vinegar” comes in to save the day.

Update December 4, 2021 : Vinegar has received a nice update today with a host of new features:

• On videos (and devices) that support 4K, you should see 4K video options in the quality switcher toolbar.
• For people with expensive data plans, you can also switch to 144p and 240p.
• You can toggle Theater mode with the keyboard shortcut “T” or click the “Theater” text below the video.
• Supports keyboard shortcuts like “J” to rewind, “K” to pause, and “L” to forward.
• Videos should be playable if you’re signed in with YouTube Premium.
• Videos should be added to your watching history if you’re signed in.
• Fixed a bunch of 3rd-party website embeds.
• Sound no longer plays when you go back to the homepage.
• It should preserve timestamp when you switch video quality.
• Timestamped URLs (i.e. URLs with &t=123) should now work.
• Clicking the chapter links in the description should bring you to the correct time.

“Vinegar” is a Safari extension for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that was released earlier this month with the goal of replacing the YouTube player with a minimal HTML player (via Daring Fireball ). This is similar to the days of YouTube5, which was a similar Safari extension back in the days when the YouTube player was written in Adobe Flash.

Developed by Zhenyi Tan, Vinegar replaces the YouTube player in Safari with a native HTML video tag, bringing a host of associated improvements:

• The removal of in-video ads.
• Prevent YouTube from tracking your play/pause/seek activities.
• Restore picture-in-picture functionality.
• The videos don’t stop playing if you switch to another browser tab.
• You can choose the audio-only stream to keep the music playing when Safari is in the background.

Downloading YouTube Videos in macOS

When I reviewed the video player IINA (see “ Prepare for Apple Dropping Old Media Formats with the IINA Video Player ,” 6 May 2019), quite a few TidBITS readers took it as an opportunity to vent their frustrations about downloading videos from YouTube. Recent changes in Firefox have broken extensions like DownThemAll , which used to be a handy way to download videos.

There are several reasons you might want to download videos from YouTube. Like most cloud-based things, YouTube videos are ephemeral—they vanish all the time for all kinds of reasons. The uploader might pull a video down, YouTube may remove a video in response to a copyright complaint (sometimes legitimate, sometimes not), and a video might disappear if it runs afoul of YouTube’s ever-changing and seemingly haphazard standards for acceptable content.

But preservation isn’t the only reason people download YouTube videos. For example, they may want to download short clips to use in their videos (honoring the doctrine of fair use, of course). A friend of mine accidentally deleted the “sizzle clip” he slaps on the front of every video in iMovie, and he solved the problem by downloading one of his own videos from YouTube and extracting that clip. Or, you may want to be able to play some YouTube videos in a situation where there’s no Internet access.

Whatever the reason, you don’t have to rely on Firefox to download videos from YouTube. There are several solutions on the Mac, and I review a few of them here.

Note that downloading YouTube videos with a utility other than YouTube’s apps (which require a YouTube Premium subscription) nominally violates YouTube’s terms of service :

You shall not download any Content unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content. You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content. YouTube and its licensors reserve all rights not expressly granted in and to the Service and the Content.

That said, I’ve never heard of YouTube punishing a user for downloading videos, although using copyrighted material in videos you upload to YouTube could get you in trouble.

The Command-Line Grand Poobah: youtube-dl

Arguably, the greatest of the YouTube downloaders is the public-domain youtube-dl , a command-line utility that powers many apps like the aforementioned IINA. It’s not the friendliest option, but it’s free and powerful.

The project offers instructions for installing youtube-dl . You can use the curl command or rely on Homebrew , a command-line package manager that I strongly recommend—refer to Homebrew’s home page for a one-line command to install it from Terminal. Then, in Terminal, you can enter brew install youtube-dl to install the download utility.

Once you install youtube-dl, type man youtube-dl in Terminal to see its extensive list of options. But all you really need to do to use it is to type youtube-dl URL in Terminal, where URL is the link to the desired YouTube video. That downloads the video in your current directory. Type cd ~/Downloads before running youtube-dl to download the video to your Downloads folder.

You can play the video after you download it with QuickTime or with a third-party player like IINA or VLC .

The developers of youtube-dl issue updates frequently, which is why I recommend installing it with Homebrew. The first time I tried to download a video for this article, I received an error because I hadn’t updated youtube-dl first. Homebrew makes updating easy with the brew update youtube-dl command, which updates both youtube-dl and Homebrew itself, along with all the packages youtube-dl needs to function.

A Free Graphical App: ClipGrab

ClipGrab is a simple, free utility for macOS that can download individual YouTube videos and even convert them to other formats, including MP3 if you’re only interested in the audio.

It’s easy to use: copy a YouTube URL and open ClipGrab. It will automatically extract the URL from the clipboard. Use the Format drop-down menu to choose a format (Original is usually fine if you want video), and click Grab This Clip to download the video. The default download location is your Desktop, but you can change it in the Settings tab.

ClipGrab offers a search tab where you can search for and download videos, but I find it easier to use YouTube’s search engine to find videos and then paste the URL into ClipGrab.

A Setapp Option: Downie

A subscription to Setapp includes several utilities that can download YouTube videos: the torrent client Folx , media players Movist Pro  and Elmedia Player , and an app purpose-built for downloading YouTube videos: Downie . (If you’re not a Setapp subscriber, Downie costs $19.99.)

Downie, unlike ClipGrab, is tailor-made for the Mac. You can drag and drop YouTube URLs to Downie’s window or its Dock icon. Downie also comes bundled with a Safari extension, which you enable in Safari > Preferences > Extensions. Once you enable the extension, you can click the Downie icon in Safari’s toolbar to download a video.

In addition to Downie’s simplicity, I like that it downloads subtitles with the video (YouTube automatically generates subtitles for videos). Downie saves subtitles alongside the video as an SRT file. Unfortunately, QuickTime Player doesn’t understand those files, so you need to use a more capable video player like IINA to view them. As long as the SRT file is in the same directory as the video, it works automatically when you play the video in IINA.

Downie can also download an entire YouTube playlist at once. Just drag the playlist URL into Downie and click Playlist to see all the available videos to download. You can then click Add Selected to download the playlist videos.

Download an Entire Channel with 4K Video Downloader

Downie can download an entire playlist, but there’s only one Mac app that I know of that can download an entire YouTube channel: 4K Video Downloader . You can try the app for free (it costs $15 to unlock the entire app). To use it, copy the channel’s URL, open 4K Video Downloader, and click Paste Link to load every video in the channel.

Even better, when 4K Downloader is running, you can subscribe to a channel to download every new video published on the channel automatically.

Note that if a channel has a lot of videos, it can take a long time to download them all and it may use considerable system resources to do so. Nonetheless, I’ve successfully downloaded entire channels containing hundreds of videos with 4K Video Downloader, making it my favorite utility of the bunch.

4K Video Download can also download subtitles, and it can convert YouTube videos to MP3 audio files. Of course, it downloads individual videos as well.

I’ve been using “VIdeo Download Helper” with Firefox, and later, with Chrome. Unfortunately, it seems that much content I’m interested in saving locally (even if just temporarily), is no longer in the form of a complete, quickly downloadable media file. Lately finding things being fed in streaming formats, which sequentially send little <100kB chunks. Even if the “helper” app could consolidate those, you’re basically doing a “real-time” recording, much as if you were using a screen capture app. Have not checked to see if any of the suggested apps can get around this.

I suppose if you have a need to buy the $100 app for some other reason, you could use ScreenFlow to capture them live and have editing/export capabilities afterwards.

You could also use the screen capture features of Mojave. Command-Shift-5, draw a box around the video, choose Record Selected Portion, and click Capture.

Josh, you haven’t noticed MediaHuman app, it has a lot more features and best of all you can subscribe to playlist updates, not only channels.

I’ve been using 4K Video Downloader for a few years now, and love that I can feed it a track or playlist URL and leave it running in background while I do other stuff, until it pings to let me know it’s finished. I then have Hazel pick up the MP3 files and import them into iTunes.

We were able to download a video as you described, but Quicktime is grayed out when we try to use it to open it. It opens fine with Firefox, but not Quicktime. We used Homebrew to download it.

Are we missing something?

It’s possible that the original is in a format QuickTime can’t read. Try a third-party video player like IINA or VLC, or download it with a utility that lets you change the format to MP4.

I’ve been using JDownloader for more years than I can remember to download Youtube videos. It’s cross-platform, free, multilingual, updated frequently, and offers excellent support. It can also download many other types of media and files. For Youtube, it has the ability to download both playlists and channels, either in their original resolution or one of the user’s choosing. It can also download only the audio track, the cover image, and/or the description text. It can be found at http://jdownloader.org/home/index .

I copy the video URL in Safari, open new network source in VLC, paste the URL, open the VLC Media Information window, copy the info in the Location field and finally paste that into Downloads in Safari.

It’s possible that YouTube will bring its iPad app to the Mac when Catalina ships.

youtube-dl is my favourite, and if you use the curl command you are up and running in 2 minutes sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl I use youtube-dl -f mp4 when I want to be able to play it on iPad and iPhone. I would not bother with Homebrew except if I needed other packages.

I use iTube Studio regularly to grab videos for my volunteer class just in case the wi-fi isn’t working that day. Works great.

I use “Download Video” tool from Parallels Toolbox. https://youtu.be/KPuxBVWts_Q Love all the helpful stuff it does for me and they just keep adding more utility as time goes on.

I use Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. Oké, it may not be free but you get what you pay for. I often use it to download just the sound from a video. It can do both equally easily. As well as being able to convert from umpteen formats to umpteen formats. Hassle free and reliable. Excellent Aimersoft support.

There has been an audio track on YT that I’ve wanted for sometime but it had been so difficult to get JUST the audio but the suggestion of “ClipGrab” made it so easy. Basically poof! I’ve got it! So thanks a lot!

Adam mentioned ViDL above, and it essentially puts a nice Mac front-end on youtube-dl (and allows you to update the underlying youtube-dl as needed). However, it seems to download videos at a lower resolution than the maximum and I can’t see a way to change this behaviour. Overall, 4K Video Downloader still seems better and allows you to select the download quality you want, up to the maximum available.

I recommend you to use DumpMedia Video Downloader , it has online and offline versions, I use the online tool all the time, save time and space, but you can use the offline tool to download in batch, means you can download the whole playlist at one go.

The easy way to download and install is with these commands in Terminal:

yt-dlp is awesome. It’s much more reliable than youtube-dl. I’ve used it many times to grab playlists or even entire channels. Choose your own options… but these work well for me:

yt-dlp --continue --no-overwrites --ignore-errors --download-archive downloaded.txt --format “bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/bestvideo+bestaudio/best” --merge-output-format mp4 --output “%(title)s [%(id)s].mp4” {video, playlist or channel url goes here}

That will grab the desired content, skip any that were already in the same directory, make a list of download id’s in download.txt, and save the files as mp4.

I had not thought about the possibility to grab playlists. Thanks for the tip. I was just happy that the simple command:

still works just like with youtube-dl.

yt-dlp is still awesome… but things have changed over at Youtube. They are now using vp09 format inside mp4 containers, which Quicktime will not play. So we need a new incantation:

All that has changed is that we now specify a different codec to grab.

I’ve used Downie for several years now, with no hassles or problems. It is well worth the purchase price; it’s well designed, usually really easy to use, and, most importantly, the developer updates it regularly and responds quickly to user questions.

Worth a look is VideoPro Converter. It’s often available in Bundlehunt style packages for about 3 bucks. Also RIPs DVDs, converts between formats, screen records etc.

yt-dlp also can download a video from a website that requires you to login with a username and password or requires browser cookies. Search for “cookies-from-browser” in both the ReadMe and the FAQ.

I even used it to download a video that had been uploaded to Google Drive with permissions allowing viewing but not downloading. In that case, yt-dlp pretends to view the video at 2X speed (without displaying anything on your screen) as it downloads it.

Safari has long been the default browser on your iPhone and Mac. Unlike Chrome, it’s not easy for users to find a good free video downloader for Safari. Your favorite video downloadhelper also not available on Safari. But, there still are a few good video downloader that you can use with Safari, though.

In the simplest case, the video is embedded on a website and is downloadable by default, you can directly use the downloading functionality in Safari. If you need downloading videos from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. Then, you’ll need to either use a Safari extension, online site, shortcut, or video downloader app to download the video.

Note: Before we show you how to download any video from Safari, it’s worth noting that these methods tend to break every once in a while. Video sharing sites like YouTube, Facebook, etc. frequently changes things on its end and stops these downloaders from working. which means that the method for downloading videos need to adapting accordingly. If any method stops working, please let us know in the comments, we’ll test and update with a working method.

Downloading Embedded Video with Safari Itself

If the video you want to download is made available by the website, you can download the videos directly on Safari, just in the same way you download any other file. Please note, this method is only applicable to download embedded videos on web pages and not for videos provided by streaming services such as YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Dailymotion, etc.

Download Any Video with Video Downloader App for Safari

There are many third-party apps that let you download videos, The most reliable of these apps that I’ve come across is iFunia YouTube Downloader. It  can download videos from YouTube, Bilibili, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, Soundcloud, TikTok, Tumblr, Twitch, Vimeo, VK, etc. 1000+ websites. In our test, it can really download video at their highest resolution possible—including 4K and 8K. 

The free version of the app allows 3 downloads for a test, which is good enough for most people. It features no ads, trackers, or analytics. You can download videos in MP4, MP3, M4a, etc. 

If you want to download videos in bulks or you want to download a whole playlist or channel, this app supports it too. and It also couldn't be simpler to use: just copy the URL of the video and paste it to this app. 

Steps on how to download any video from Safari on Mac:

• Click the Download icon in the bottom right and it will start downloading all videos instantly. Once completed, tick out “checkmark” icon to find the just downloaded videos on your device.

1. Using Apple Shortcuts

On your iPhone, the best way to download videos from Safari is via Apple’s Shortcuts app . It’s where you’ll find all kinds of extensions and automations for iOS. and one of them is called Lucky Download Shortcut which enables you download videos from social media sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Daily Motion, TikTok, Instagram, etc.

Here’s what you need to do:

• Download the Lucky Download Shortcut from RANKSAPK (a third-party gallery for shortcuts for your iPhone and iPad). 

• Scroll down and select Lucky Download. The shortcut will guide you through the process  and ask for a bunch of permissions in the process. In this process you can set the downloaded format and location. 
• After giving all the permissions, the downloaded file will be saved on your iPhone. You can repeat this process for pretty much any video on any sites or app.

2. Use a video downloader site (but be cautious)

Now, Mobile browsing on iPhone is just the same as browsing on a Mac or PC. So, just like on Mac you can open an online video downloader in Safari and download the video.

Y2mate is the site I recommend most for mobile users, as you can download videos in MP4 or MP3 format up to 1080p. And, with this app you don’t need the copy&paste step. You just open the video in safari and then insert "pp" after "youtube" in any YouTube URL for faster downloading.

With this method you need to be cautious on which website to use, as online video downloader websites can be spammy, blasting you with sketchy ads and may have malicious. Still, as the Y2mate we introduce above, it does work, so it’s also a notable option. 

Safari Video Downloader Extension

Yes, Safari has browser extensions too.  You can use the Safari Extensions category on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac to navigate and find Safari extensions. But, unlike Firefox and Google Chrome, there are not many extensions that supports downloading video from Safari. you don’t have choices like video downloadhelper, JDownloader. and many of them have not been updated for a long time. Not even to mention downloading YouTube videos from Safari.

Here’s how you can use VideoDuke in Safari to download videos:

• Download and install VideoDuke on Mac. 

• Now open YouTube or any video sharing sites, and play the video you want to download, then click on the bookmark you just saved. 
• Click open in VideoDuke on that page, and allow it to open the video in VideoDuke app. The app will then start analyzing the video. Just click Download to get the video. 

PullTube Extension for Safari

Just like VideoDuke, PullTube is both an app and extension, it can download videos, audios and playlist from 1,000+ websites and offer some editing functions like video trimming, you can download its extension for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

Here’s how you can use PullTube Extension for Safari to download videos:

Safari Video Downloader Online

If you don’t want to download any apps or extension, there are also several online options  that can download videos from Safari without software. although it is full of ads and the download speed is slow.

As for online video downloaders, there are plenty of sites you can try to use to download videos. A number of them seem pretty scammy, though. So, if you decide to use online video downloader, do pay attention to fake ads and make sure not to click it.

That's all about how you can download videos from Safari on iPhone or Mac. Pretty easy, right? However, do note that there is no official way to download videos from Safari, If you do decide to do it, you’ll need a video downloader, Shortcut, a browser extension, or use an online website.

This Safari extension helps you identify and watch 4K YouTube videos on your Mac

You’ve probably noticed that YouTube won’t render 4K videos in the Safari browser even though modern Macs support native display resolutions higher than 1080p and have the processing power required for smooth 4K video playback.

VP9 vs. H.265

That’s because Google uses the VP9 codec to encode YouTube clips in resolutions higher than 1080p. For videos up to 1080p, Google uses the ubiquitous H.264 codec that works on most devices. Anything higher than 1080p gets encoded using the VP9 codec. Apple two years ago adopted the High Efficiency Video Codec (also know as H.265) in iOS 11 and across its other platforms, but Google doesn’t support it.

For those reasons, Mac fans who prefer Safari over Chrome tend to keep Google’s browser installed on their system for those times when they’d like to enjoy 4K videos on YouTube. Even checking out if a video is available in 4K resolution requires you to click the gear icon in YouTube’s video player in Safari  and select the Quality sub-menu.

Wait, scratch that – on Safari, YouTube’s Quality menu won’t even list any resolutions higher than 1080p, even if the video is available in 4K. In other words, you’ll have to use a non-Apple browser to play YouTube videos in 1440p, 2160p (4K) or higher quality on your Mac

Developer Maxim Ananov has made a cool Safari extension that helps with that.

Enter 4Ktube for Safari

It shows a “4K” badge in the Safari toolbar when a YouTube video has quality higher than 1080p available. With a single click, you can then watch the 4K version in Chrome instead.

Best of all?

The extension also works for opening any page in Chrome—great when you stumble upon a website that doesn’t work well in Safari! With a click of the toolbar button, the problematic page is sent to Chrome.

How to send 4K videos from Safari to Chrome

It couldn’t be simpler, just follow the steps below.

1)   Download 4Ktube via Mac App Store for two bucks .

2) Launch 4Ktube on your Mac.

3) In the 4Ktube window, click Show in Safari Preferences .

4) Now launch Safari and choose Preferences from the Safari menu.

5) Click Extensions in the toolbar and enable the  4Ktube extension in the sidebar.

You can now load any YouTube video in Safari.

If the video has 4K quality available, you’ll see a “4K” badge on the 4Ktube’s toolbar icon.

Simply look out for that badge in the toolbar when browsing YouTube in Safari, then click the button any time you’d like to watch the video in 4K resolution in Chrome.

By shift-clicking the toolbar icon, the page will automatically close in Safari when you open it in Chrome (this can be set as the default behavior in the 4Ktube preferences).
