About brand new.

Brand New is an American rock band from Long Island, New York. Formed in 2000, the band consists of Jesse Lacey (vocals, guitar), Vincent Accardi (guitar, vocals), Garrett Tierney (bass guitar, vocals), and Brian Lane (drums, percussion); they are joined by Benjamin Homola (percussion) and Kevin Devine (guitar, vocals) for their live performances. From 2005 until 2013 the band also included Derrick Sherman (guitar, backing vocals, keyboards). In the late 1990s, Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney and Brian Lane were all members of the band The Rookie Lot. They eventually split off from the other members of the group, and in 2000 formed Brand New in Merrick, New York. The band signed to Triple Crown Records and in 2001 released their debut studio album, Your Favorite Weapon. Their second album, Deja Entendu, was released in 2003 and marked a stylistic change for the band, one that garnered an extremely positive critical reception. The album's first two singles, "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades", both received airplay on MTV2 and Fuse TV, entering the top 40 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart. Deja Entendu was eventually certified gold in the United States. Brand New moved to Interscope Records and released the critically acclaimed The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me in 2006. "Jesus Christ" became their highest charting single in the US, peaking at number 30 on the Alternative Songs chart. In March 2008, the band started their own record label, named Procrastinate! Music Traitors. Their fourth album, Daisy, was released in 2009 and became their highest charting album in the US, reaching number six on the Billboard 200. The band have been working on new material for some time, releasing new single "Mene" in April 2015 followed by "I Am a Nightmare" a year later in May 2016. Recent T-shirt designs and lyric book inserts hint at the band possibly breaking up in 2018. On August 17, 2017, the band released their fifth album Science Fiction, two days after announcing its release on vinyl, to critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming Brand New's first number-one album on the Billboard 200.

Formed in London, UK, Brand New Heavies are a pioneering jazz collective who helped create the sound of acid jazz, fusing funk, soul and hip hop production to create their unique sound.

Initially known as Brother International, the band began as an instrumental acid-jazz group in 1985, changing their name to Brand New Heavies after gaining their first record contract. The band were quick to gain a cult following, finding many fans in the burgeoning London club scene. Initially formed of Jan Kincaid (drums/keyboards), Simon Bartholomew (guitars) and Andrew Levy (bass/keyboards), the band soon added a brass section as well as vocalist Jay Ella Ruth.

The band signed with indie label, Acid Jazz, for their self-titled debut album, which garnered widespread critical acclaim upon its release. The band also gained a US distribution deal with Delicious Vinyl, with whom they re-recorded their debut for a US release. Jay Ella Ruth also left the group at this time, with N’dea Davenport brought in instead. Brand New Heavies found hits in the UK with “Dream Come True” and “Stay This Way,” but it was with “Never Stop” that the Heavies broke the US market, becoming the first group to break into the American R&B Chart since Soul II Soul’s success.

After collaborating with Q-Tip and MC Sech, the Brand New Heavies were inspired to incorporate more hip hop influences into their music, evident in their next album, “Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1.” The album brought in Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba and The Pharcyde to feature on the 1992 recording, which peaked at 38 in the UK and 139 in the US.

Success continued for the Heavies with 1994’s “Brother Sister,” which went Platinum in the UK. Davenport left the group to pursue a solo career, with singer Siedah Garrett taking over vocal responsibilities, with her first feature with the band being on 1997’s “Shelter.”

After two successful greatest hits albums, released on both sides of the atlantic, Davenport decided to reunite with the group, joining them early in 2006. “Get Used To It” arrived a year later, after which they embarked on an extensive tour across the UK and Europe. The band returned to their instrumental roots with 2011’s “Dunk Your Trunk,” before once again uniting with N’Dea Davenport, as well as new vocalist Dawn Joseph, for 2013’s “Forward.” Joseph became the group’s sole vocalist on their 2014 release, “Sweet Freaks,” their first for Earmusic.

Live reviews

Acid jazz and punk outfit The Brand New Heavies are the epitome of eccentric and may be described as a small piece of London history. They soon approach the thirtieth anniversary of the band's formation and within that time they have achieved an awful lot yet as they work mainly underground you probably won't have heard about it unless you are in tune with Ealing's bustling music scene.

They have been consistently releasing albums although only two made any real impact on the UK charts, luckily for fans tonight's setlist is a collation of all their music and not just those albums. There is a great melange of material on offer including 'Midnight at the Oasis' and 'Dream On Dreamer' and a selection of other hits. The show is as eccentric as you would imagine with great costumes and theatrical performances from all four members. Your eyes are not sure where to look during the performance but this is part of the brilliance as it is so absorbing you leave feeling as though you have just entered an alternative world if only for a couple of hours.

I have to say that the Brand New Heavies do not produce my favorite style of music but I gave it a chance when a friend gave me some tickets. The venue that the gig was held in was awesome and I really enjoyed some of the new music I never heard before. I can only say one word from my experience and that it was awesome.

Some of the highlights for me were Jan Kincaid's lead vocals on their track Heaven and Dawn Joseph on their song Sometimes. What I came to learn as well is that this band are performers and they give a great performance for the money paid to buy the ticket. I went home after the gig and went and gave a listen to more of their songs and everything I really enjoyed a lot.

Go check them out because it will be one of the best experiences of your life. I would say if you have never heard of the band give them a listen before buying a ticket because their style of music is not for everyone. If you do end up liking their music go see a show when they come to a town near you because you will not be disappointed one bit.

Fantastic evening! The Heavies were on great form, and they didn't let a faulty guitar stop them.

They played all the classics and got the crowd moving to the grooves. The Clapham Grand was a great venue; good acoustics (thought at points deafening) and nice space for dancing.

My faves were 'Dream On Dreamer/Midnight at the Oasis', 'Sometimes', 'Spend Some Time', 'You Are The Universe' and 'Dream Come True'. The last two were played at the very end, and it was a fitting end to a brilliant gig.

All in all, a solid 9/10!

I have wanted to see the BNH for a while now since I'd seen them touring.

My mate introduced me to their music when we were at college together years ago.

Thoroughly enjoyed the gig, a mix of greatest hits and songs off the new album. They played to the crowd brilliantly and fed off the positive vibe.

I am so glad we went and hope to get the chance to see them again.

Absolutely one of best shows I ever seen in my 35 yrs of concert going. N'Dea Davenport's homecoming to ATL. She killed it! No gimmicks, costume changes or light show, just the band and a stage. Buckhead Theater perfect quaint venue. Must see.

Excellent evening. Fabulous music the band were really engaging and surpassed my expectations. I loved the venue I will definitely look for more acts there. Enjoyed food & drink in the bar downstairs beforehand.

Wonderful. The band has a contagious charisma. I have not stopped dancing for a minute!

I hope they come many times to Brazil. Wish they had shirts to sell so I can show everyone that I was there!

Brand New’s Current Tour Is The Intense And Triumphant Farewell Their Fans Deserve

Corbin Reiff

Nobody moves. The cavernous Aragon Ballroom in Chicago is a pitch black void and inside, 5,000 Brand New fans hardly breathe as a large metal fence descends from the rafters. Out of the shadows, six figures wander out onto the elevated stage to the thrill of their mesmerized acolytes. A low, instrumental rumble cuts through the expectant silence, followed by singer Jesse Lacey’s unmistakable croon: “It’s where you live, but you don’t know how it’s built.”

Even as the audience sings along, pouring all they have into every word of the first song of the show, “Lit Me Up,” they remain absolutely still. You can’t even see the band from behind the massive wall of steel and flaming LED lights, but hardly anyone shifts this way or that to get a better look. We stand as one, totally transfixed by the words and the foreboding music. It’s actually incredible. All of us have fallen deep under Brand New’s spell. All of us are yearning to open our hearts and say goodbye.

Brand New have made several allusions over the past few years that they have no intention in carrying on past 2018. Every show, every action they take could be their last, and those who’ve followed them since the beginning, back around the turn of this century, are sharing in their last act with an almost defiant sense of celebration. If you’re holding onto a ticket to their current tour expecting to partake in a funeral, you’ll almost certainly leave disappointed. Brand New seem more intent on giving their devoted following the intense, and triumphant wake that they deserve.

Brand New is the kind of band who inspires almost cultish-levels of devotion. Their infrequent album release schedule combined with the fact that they’ve almost totally removed themselves from the promotional side of the business, rarely, if ever granting interviews, has caused to create this swirl of mystery around themselves that some find patently irresistible. It doesn’t hurt the cause that their discography is jammed with genre-defining, catharsis-rendering, emo masterpieces like Deja Entendu and The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me .

The depth of passion that Brand New inspires was on full display throughout the 90-minute set. Men and women alike belted out the choruses to cherished favorite tracks like their very lives depended on it. Crowd-surfers were frequent. Right in front of me, a girl with a shaved head burst into tears and began sobbing just as the guys onstage broke into the fourth song of the night “You Won’t Know.” Her friend wrapped a consoling arm around her and asked, “Are you okay?” She sniffled and responded “Not really.” Next to her a large, tough looking dude looked over and offered, reassuringly “It’s a totally reasonable reaction.” The girl glanced at him and smiled. “It’s been 16 years for me,” she replied while drying her eyes. “16 years,” she repeated.

Here’s where I make my confession. Prior to 2017, I wasn’t really all that into Brand New. I was aware of them in high school and beyond sure, but while so many of my peers were scrawling the lyrics to “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” on their arms in sharpie, I was simply in to other things. Some stuff just kind of falls through the cracks, what can I say?

Then, a couple of months back they unveiled what is purportedly their last album Science Fiction . I was intrigued, but waited a weekend before giving it a proper listen and then, ho-ly sh*t! I was hooked. From the disconcerting tape recordings, the slow-simmering melodies, the laconic vocal delivery on the verses, the bombastic throat-shredding fury through the choruses, and the twisted melange of unsettling imagery, I fell deep in the throes of a full-blown love affair. At the time of my writing this, there’s no doubt in my mind that Science Fiction is the absolute, number-one, best rock record of the year. It suddenly became extremely important for me to see them before the opportunity slipped away forever.

Fortunately, while Brand New paid a good amount of attention to some of their most-beloved older material throughout the show, songs like “Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades” and “Jesus” for example, almost half the set was filled out by tracks off Science Fiction. This suited me just fine. I actually admired the gumption it takes to stack the deck so heavily toward newer material at this stage in the game. The crowd rewarded their efforts by going nearly word-for-word on newer cuts like “137,” “Can’t Get It Out,” and “Out Of Mana.” The 11th song of the night, “In The Water” drew a particularly enthusiastic response.

Lacey made mention of the finality surrounding the show during one of the few times he deigned to address the crowd. While introducing the “Same Logic/Teeth,” he revealed the purpose behind it all, saying that “It’s pretty freeing that this will probably be one of our last pieces of music.” There were no tears then. Everyone cheered and the band blasted us into another dimension one more time.

Farewell Brand New. I hardly knew ye.

Williston residents check out brand new high school CTE center

WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - The Williston Basin Career and Technical Education Center opened for students in August and the public had a chance to tour the halls this week.

The new wing of Williston High School provides more spaces for trades courses, like building and trades, welding, aviation, and health careers. Kenzi Brown, the district CTE Director, says the new facility will help students develop workforce skills before obtaining their diploma.

“It’s a beautiful building. We have such a wide variety of students, so it’s fun to help them find what they are passionate about and help them follow that with this new center,” said Brown.

The Center also houses the alternative school, giving students there a chance to participate in CTE courses.

Shawn Mendes Drives The 2024 VMAs Crowd Wild With Brand-New Song

Erinn Callahan

Updated:

Two years after pulling out of his World Tour to prioritize his mental health, Shawn Mendes is back. The Canadian singer-songwriter, 26, signaled a new horizon in his music career when he dropped  “Why Why Why” earlier this year. With a new album on the way Oct. 18, Mendes took the stage Wednesday (Sept. 11) at UBS Arena in Long Island, New York, for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Videos by American Songwriter

Shawn mendes has been teasing new music.

Shawn Mendes premiered a new song, “Nobody Knows,” at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards show. Producers Mike Sabath and Eddie Benjamin performed alongside him.

The “Treat You Better” singer shared his excitement for the new music by posting a clip to Instagram Monday (Sept. 9.)

“I’m absolutely BEAMING to play this song live,” he wrote in the caption. “I’ll be on stage with my brothers  @mikesabath  and  @eddiebenjamin  for the first time. I can’t wait for this one.”

An ecstatic fan commented on the Instagram post: “HE IS BACK PEOPLE.”

“Nobody Knows” came about on a “tough night,” Mendes said in a video posted to social media. “I was dealing with some feelings, and we were having some whiskey, and we were in the studio,” he said. “The actual version that you guys are going to hear, we performed it and we recorded it one time. Full take through, top to bottom. It was just that. We did it once, we did it together, and we did it live. And it was just kind of this beautiful captured moment in time.”

Getting Candid About Awards Shows

Shawn Mendes is no stranger to the VMAs stage. The “Stitches” singer last performed at the ceremony in 2019. Even so, he admitted that nerves still get the best of him.

“I don’t know about you guys who have been to award shows, but they’re tough, man,” Mendes revealed Tuesday (Sept. 10) in a video posted to X/Twitter. “For me in the past, they’ve been pretty uncomfortable and pretty intimidating and scary. It’s amazing to be able to play them, but… yeah, they’re freaky.”

pic.twitter.com/8iy8cupSoL — Shawn Mendes (@ShawnMendes) September 10, 2024

Fortunately, he didn’t have to do it alone. Mendes said that getting to share the stage with producers Mike Sabath and Eddie Benjamin—whom the artist called his closest friends—”is just so healing to me.”

First Private Spacewalk in SpaceX Capsule Achieves New Milestone

Jared Isaacman, the billionaire leading the Polaris Dawn mission, and Sarah Gillis, a SpaceX engineer, exited and re-entered their spacecraft in a test of commercial space technologies.

Polaris Dawn Crew Completes First-Ever Private Spacewalk

Jared isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur, and spacex engineer sarah gillis successfully completed the first ever private spacewalk..

We can see our commander, Jared Isaacman, now turning the crank. The first views of the first-ever commercial spacewalk. Commander Jared Isaacman now emerging from — It’s super exciting to see this. Our fellow SpaceXer, Sarah Gillis, now about to make her spacewalk. Really cool to see one of our own out there. That’s awesome.

Video player loading

By Kenneth Chang

Two private astronauts moved outside their spacecraft early Thursday morning, conducting the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

The spacewalk was the centerpiece of Polaris Dawn, a collaboration between Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jared Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur who is leading the mission.

“Back at home, we all have a lot of work to do, but from here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world,” he said while standing in the hatch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule with the planet above his head.

The successful operation further reinforces that space travel is no longer the exclusive province of professional astronauts working at governmental space agencies like NASA, and now neither is the derring-do of spacewalks, when astronauts are protected by just their spacesuits from airless doom. The Polaris missions — this one is the first of three — aim to accelerate technological advances needed to fulfill Mr. Musk’s hope of sending people to Mars someday .

The top half of Jared Isaacman in a spacesuit with Earth in the background, left, and Sarah Gillis in a spacesuit as she exited the Crew Dragon capsule.

Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator, cheered the spacewalk, which the government space agency played almost no role in .

“Today’s success represents a giant leap forward for the commercial space industry and NASA’s long-term goal to build a vibrant U.S. space economy,” Mr. Nelson posted on the website X .

The spacewalk officially began at 6:12 a.m. Eastern time with the flow of oxygen into the astronauts’ spacesuits. That was almost three hours later than originally planned, but the operation proceeded without a hitch.

Because there is no airlock in the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft used for the flight, the only way to perform a spacewalk is to let all of the air out of the spacecraft. NASA and Soviet astronauts conducted spacewalks in a similar manner in the 1960s.

First turning a hand crank, Mr. Isaacman opened the top hatch of the capsule and moved outside, where he conducted mobility tests of his spacesuit.

For a journey that earlier had traveled to the highest orbit by humans in more than a half-century, his sojourn in the vacuum of space was brief: After a few minutes, Mr. Isaacman re-entered the capsule, and another crew member, Sarah Gillis, a SpaceX engineer, moved outside and performed the same mobility tests.

Although the two other crew members, Scott Poteet and Anna Menon, remained inside the vehicle, they were also wearing spacesuits inside the airless capsule. It was the first time that four astronauts were simultaneously exposed to the vacuum of space.

After Ms. Gillis re-entered, she closed the hatch, and the inside of the spacecraft was slowly repressurized. Less than two hours after it started, the spacewalk was over.

A key goal of the Polaris Dawn mission is the development of more advanced spacesuits that would be needed for any attempt at off-world colonization by SpaceX. During a news conference before the launch, Mr. Isaacman mused about how someone stepping onto Mars might one day wear a future version of the spacesuit that SpaceX developed for this mission.

“A huge honor to have that opportunity to test it out on this flight,” he said.

Closer to Earth, commercial spacewalks could open up other possibilities once impossible to imagine, like technicians repairing private satellites in orbit. Mr. Isaacman has even suggested that the second Polaris mission could attempt a trip to NASA’s aging Hubble Space Telescope to perform repairs and extend its life in orbit.

The spacewalks by Mr. Isaacman and Ms. Gillis were short and modest in complexity. Unlike frantic scenes in science fiction movies, they waited patiently as air was slowly evacuated from their capsule. Then they moved methodically, following a carefully planned choreography that lasted only a few minutes.

After opening the hatch manually, Mr. Isaacman pulled himself upward using a railing mounted to the top of the Crew Dragon. He never let go of the spacecraft as he performed a series of movements to test the capabilities of the spacesuits.

When his time was up, he moved back down into the Crew Dragon, and Ms. Gillis then repeated the same actions.

The Polaris Dawn crew’s cautious approach was a reminder that space is an inherently inhospitable and dangerous environment, and during spacewalks astronauts are enclosed in a small bubble of air — their spacesuits — that keep them from suffocating in the vacuum of space.

While there have been near misses during spacewalks, including during the first spacewalk by a Soviet astronaut in 1965, going outside a spacecraft is not the most dangerous part of spaceflight. No astronauts have ever died or suffered serious injury during a spacewalk. And spacewalks are not infrequent: There have been more than 270 spacewalks conducted at the International Space Station since December 1998 largely without incident. (Astronauts at the I.S.S. enter and exit the space station through airlocks, minimizing the amount of air that is released into space.)

Fatalities during spaceflight have occurred during launches, as was the case with the loss of the space shuttle Challenger and its crew in 1986, or during landings, like when the space shuttle Columbia burned up in the searing heat of re-entry through Earth’s atmosphere in 2003.

The Polaris Dawn mission has so far gone smoothly.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Crew Dragon capsule and the four astronauts early Tuesday morning into an elliptical orbit that, at its highest point, was 755 miles above Earth’s surface.

That was the farthest off the planet that anyone has gone since NASA’s Apollo moon missions in the 1970s.

At that altitude, they passed through the South Atlantic Anomaly, a weak point in Earth’s magnetic field that allows high-energy charged particles from regions known as the Van Allen belts to come closer to Earth’s surface. Much of the radiation dosage from this spaceflight — equivalent to several months at the space station — occurred during these first few orbits.

Late on Tuesday, the thrusters fired to stretch its orbit to a high point of about 870 miles . That surpassed the 853-mile altitude that two NASA astronauts, Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon, reached during the Gemini XI mission in 1966, which had been the record distance for astronauts on a spaceflight not headed to the moon.

After circling Earth six times in the high orbit, the Crew Dragon returned to a lower orbit, where there is less danger from radiation and micrometeoroids.

During their spaceflight, the four crew members are conducting about 40 experiments, mostly investigating how weightlessness and radiation affect the human body. They have also tested laser communications between the Crew Dragon and SpaceX’s constellation of Starlink internet satellites.
