Today for my mountain bike. Wanted something pretty basic and this puppy is that for sure! I can tell you the documentation for this sucks as bad as any I have ever had. For example since 29er tires aren't listed I had to use the roll out and enter it this way. I have used Cateye in the past and I was pretty sure that 4 digit number you must enter for that was in mm. Soooo I did the roll out and came up with 1308mm. Entered that and around the block I go. I noticed the speed seemed to be WAY low and from walking this every day I know it is 1.3 miles. Computer showed .6 miles and a max of 12 mph! Had to raise the BS flag on that. Well... not that you would every know from the outstanding doicumention

Friend of mine really recommended this one to me. He has a 29er too. He never mentioned that it had an issue when setting it up. But maybe the Trek store did it for him.

ha ha ha, good way to do it. i am set up at the local bike shop. they are all really cool guys but not all of them are auto guys. when my jeep broke down (turns out the gear on the bendix arm broke), one of hte guys came out to jump it for me since we thought the battery was low. while we had the cables on, he is telling me about his air suspension being out on his lincoln towncar. so, we investigate and find the fuse is blown and the relay is fried. he said all his cousins and their kids piled into it and it just stopped working. we use the ol' bubble gum wrapper to test out if everything is fried or not and it starts working. he was so amazed, he said i will get everything at the stores prices from now on. it worked out today, saved 70 bucks there

That works! I've used the ol bubble gum wrapper too many times. Or in older vehicles .22 bullet works for a fuse too. I know a guy that bought a Lincoln for 500.00 due to the owner thinking the air ride was shot. Turns out it was in transport mode. Paid for the car got the keys went to the trunk or glove box i forget which. Flipped a switch and the arse end aired up and he drove away.

damn, thats badass. i didn't know there was a switch

My wife bought a Trip 5 Wireless for her recumbent trike. I hate to say this but it was nothing but problems from day one. Took it back to the LBS for a replacement and it wasn't much better. She checked it off as a loss and it sits in a parts box.

bontrager trip 4w review

Rola, I just dug out the doc that came with my Cateye and assuming the diameter values would be the same, 1308 definitely is too low. The chart I have says for a 29x2.1 would be 2288 and a 29x2.3 would be 2326. What size are you running?

My29 measured out 90 inches which converts to 2286

bontrager trip 4w review

^ +1 Poolie is right. 1308 is definitely too low. I know a road bike tire 700x23's value is 2096 and a 29er is even bigger than that. So Poolie's values sound about right.

Bontrager Trip 100 cycle computer review

Cheerful cycle computer that's inituitive to use and set up

Guy Kesteven

Bontrager's Trip 100 computer will score points among coordination-concscious riders thanks to coming in four options – red, neon yellow, black and white. This neat unit is totally intuitive and easy to set up, but it's not without its flaws.

The rubber ladder strap needs a fair heave to get it round 31.8mm bars, and it’s a real fight to fit it to 35mm bars. The calorie reading is based off such limited data that it’s largely pointless, though the unit does a great job of displaying the rest of the data.

The two-line display prioritises big, bold average, max and current speed readouts up top, and the other five features below. Each has a separate side button for scrolling and the bottom button then toggles between the current reading and clock displays.

The analogue wireless communication isn’t any more flaky than digital wireless units. Overall the Trip 100 is well priced.

Bontrager Trip 4W Review

The Bontrager Trip 4W is a cheap wireless bikecomputer, in the other end of the pricescale compared to bikecomputers like the  Garmin Edge 800  I reviewed not long a time ago. It is more comparable to the  Specialized SpeedZone Sport Wireless  bikecomputer I also have tested. The Bontrager Trip W4 can do what the ordinary bikeriders needs. It got an odo- and tripmeter, along with showing your speed (both average and the current speed) and distance. Which in the end is what we usually look for while we are on the bike. So for that purpose it would suit more or less everybody who are in search of a bikecomputer. Especially if they want a good wireless one for not much money. This comes in at around 30-40 euro’s and is compact, light, and easy to install.

Bontrager Trip 4W

On the road

It is good. It does not seem cheap built, and the size of the screen is good. Not too big, not too small. The values on the screen are easy to read too. Your current speed is highlighted, and the screen is showing the values very clearly. Even in sunlight I have no problem reading it. The batterylife is great too. I changed it after a year where I had been using it for more than 4000 km, so it is economic then it comes to batteries too.

Also, on the same routes it is good to tell the same distances everytime. It is only doing about 20-30 meters difference from day to day per 40 km, which is more than acceptable, when you think of the possibility of the tires not having same pressure every single time, which would lead either a smaller or a larger distance per rotation.

I have experienced just a single problem occurring though. On a day with high humidity, I rode parallel with an electric fence 5 meters from me, and the signal clearly got lost. I was doing 33 km/h before getting near the fence, and then it jumped from 70 km/h to 0 and back to 50, before I was away from the fence, where it started to show the normal values once again. I have been riding past that same fence 50 times before, never had I noticed it until then, and never did I notice it afterwards. So it was a single appearance I guess, on a day where the magnetic fields could travel longer than usual due to the greater humidity. And that was the only time I experienced that it lost its signal. The signal is definitely strong enough to make it useable. I have heard about people where this happened every time they passed electric fences, which is due to poor quality. But not on these Bontragers.

The verdict

I must admit that I am deeply impressed by what Bontrager has come up with.  For such a few bucks, you get a very solid bikecomputer, a wireless even, which holds a strong signal, is light and compact, and even got a screen that is readable in sunlight. If you are searching for a bikecomputer that does not have to have inbuilt GPS, this is a good choice for money.

Bontrager Trip 4 W. Got one today and got it all set up...then went on a 10-mile ride, it registered 19 miles, and a top speed of 158 mph I know I'm faster on the new Hifi, but that was hard to believe, as was covering 19 miles in 90 minutes of wheels turning. MapMyRide on my iPhone came in correctly at 10 miles.
