Now streaming on:

Four teenage girls in a clothing store, trying on things, kidding around, giggling. Girls of four different sizes and shapes. What makes them all want to try on the same pair of pre-owned jeans? And why are the jeans a perfect fit all four times? It's the summer before the girls begin their senior year in high school, and all four have big summer plans.

Because the jeans magically fit them all, and perhaps because they all saw " Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood ," they come up with a plan: Each girl will wear the jeans for a week and then FedEx them to the next on the list.

Along with the solemn vow to forward the jeans on schedule comes a list of rules which must not be violated, of which the most crucial is that the girls must never let anyone else remove the jeans from their bodies. There is, however, a loophole: They can take them off themselves. Here we have a premise that could easily inspire a teenage comedy of comprehensive badness, but "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is always sweet and sometimes surprisingly touching, as the jeans accompany each girl on a key step of her journey to adulthood.

The movie, like " Mystic Pizza " (1988), assembles a group of talented young actresses who have already done good work separately and now participate in a kind of showcase. America Ferrera (whose " Real Women Have Curves " remains one of the best recent coming-of-age films) plays Carmen, who lives with her Puerto Rican mother and is thrilled to be spending the summer with her absentee non-Puerto Rican father. Alexis Bledel , who struck entirely different notes in " Sin City ," is Lena, off to visit her grandparents and other relatives on a Greek island. Blake Lively plays Bridget, who attends a soccer camp in Mexico and falls in love with one of the hunky young counselors. And Amber Tamblyn (of "Joan of Arcadia") is Tibby, the one with the sardonic angle on life, who wants to be a filmmaker and takes a low-paying job for the summer at a suburban megastore where she plans to shoot a video documentary about life and work.

The stories of the four girls comes, I learn, from a novel by Ann Brashares , who has written two more in the series. The usefulness of her four-story structure is that none of the stories overstays its welcome, and the four girls aren't trapped in the same dumb suburban teenage romantic plot. They live, and they learn.

Carmen has idealized her father, Al ( Bradley Whitford ), even though he dumped her mother ( Rachel Ticotin ) years earlier. She values her Puerto Rican roots and discovers, with a shock, that her dad is planning marriage with a WASP named Lydia ( Nancy Travis ), who comes equipped with children and a suburban home that her father seems to desire as much as his new bride. Is he ashamed of his golden-skinned daughter whose jeans show off a healthy and rounded but technically overweight body?

Tibby has perhaps been watching IFC too much and possibly envisions herself at Sundance as she heads off to the Wal-Mart clone with her video camera. She gets a young assistant named Bailey ( Jenna Boyd ) who is a good soul, open and warm-hearted, and with a secret that Tibby discovers one day when Bailey passes out right there on the floor of a store corridor. Tibby's tendency was to look at everything through a lens, objectively; Bailey removes the lens cap on her heart.

In Greece, Lena finds her family living a salt-of-the-earth existence in what are surely outtakes from a tourism commercial. If there really is an island this sun-drenched, with a village this filled with white stucco and deep shade, populated by people who are this jolly and loving and who throw a feast on a moment's notice, then I don't know why I'm not there instead of here. Lena's Greek relatives are, however, extremely protective of her chastity, which may exist primarily in their dreams, and she gets a crush on a local teen god.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, Bridget and the counselor know they are violating unbreakable rules by even spending private time together, but Bridget sets her sights on the guy and stages a campaign of attraction and seduction that is more or less irresistible.

The role played by the jeans in all of these stories is, it must be said, more as a witness than as a participant, sometimes from a vantage point draped over a chair near a bed. But no, the PG-rated movie isn't overloaded with sex, and its values are in the right place.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 is Confirmed. Here Are the Details.

of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 is Confirmed. Here Are the Details.

‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ is much more than your typical teen “chick-flick”. In a genre that is dominated by mean girls, cliques and boy troubles, the film is a rare coming-of-age story about female friendship that explores the themes of love, loss and growing up in a delicate and meaningful way. Of course, best friends talk about everything. And growing up, life can be a lot more complicated than just crushes and proms – what most high-school films end up being about.  This is exactly why we need more films like ‘The Sisterhood’.

The film deals with much heavier topics, but does it in a heartening manner. In fact, ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ (and its sequel) manages to pass the Bechdel test with flying colours. But at the same time, it is filled with a strong dose of clichés, which manages to work in its favour. The film was certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes and did decently commercially. It was followed by a sequel in 2008 which also received generally favourable reviews from critics, and was loved by the fans.

Both the films are adaptations of Ann Brashares’ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series which includes 5 best-selling novels. The cast of the film series has actively expressed their interest in working on a third part. In 2018, a member actually revealed that a script is ready. This means we might actually be getting the closure we deserve with ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3’. Here’s everything we know.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 Plot: What Can It Be About?

travelling pants film

‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ is essentially about a diverse group of four best-friends, Carmen, Tibby, Bridget, and Lena, who’re spending their first summer away from each other. They find a pair of “magical” pants at a thrift shop that fits them all despite their different shapes and sizes. The group decides to parcel them to each other after having them for 2 weeks each – labelling them “the Traveling Pants”.

While the original film was an adaptation of the first novel of Brashares’ Traveling Pants series, the sequel was adapted from the fourth part . Though it also included bits from the previous novels. The third installment of the franchise is supposed to be an adaptation of the final part of Brashares’ series, titled, Sisterhood Everlasting . But as the plot details of the film has not yet been revealed we can’t say for sure what exactly is in store for us.

However, going by what the novel is about, the film will take place ten years after the last part. Without giving much spoilers, here’s what happens in ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3’:

The four friends have drifted away and live in different places. Tibby moves away to Australia with Brian, Lena is an art teacher in Rhode Island School of Design, Bridget lives in San Francisco with Eric, while Carmen is a semi-successful actress in New York. Tibby calls her friends together for one last trip to Greece as she has something to share that will change everything forever.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 Cast: Who Can Be In It?

travelling pants film

One of the major highlights of ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ is the powerful performances that the young cast offered and their impeccable chemistry together. The two films from the series star Amber Tamblyn as Tibby, Alexis Bledel as Lena, America Ferrera as Carmen Lowell, and Blake Lively as Bridget Vreeland. The third installment of the film series will have Tamblyn, Bledel, Ferrera and Lively reprise their original roles. The actors have expressed active interest in the project in the past years.

Since the final installment needs to take a gap of ten years, it also practically makes sense since the cast too has grown up in the past 12 years. In 2018, Bledel finally slipped some exciting news about the third part in ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’. She revealed that they had just pitched the film, and how much she wanted it to happen. You can check it out below:

Lucky for us, Bledel is not the only cast members who believes that the third part will part happen. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight during the same year, Lively stated, “I think it could really happen”. To hype it some more, Amber Tamblyn took to twitter and revealed that not only had they pitched the film, but that a script is ready!

Sorry for that delay, my daughter needed me. Where was I? Oh yes. Alexis is right. We’ve been pitching and there is a script. A good one. It’s up to a studio now to make the film. So far, no luck. So keep your fingers crossed, or, knock down their doors with jeans emojis. — Amber Tamblyn (@ambertamblyn) April 27, 2018

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 Crew: Who Can Be Behind It?

As the cast of the film has revealed, ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3’ is in the works. But it has not yet been green-lit by the studio. Like the previous two installments, the film will also be produced by Alloy Entertainment. Ken Kwapis, who directed the original film in 2005, will return to direct the third installment, while Liz W. Garcia will write its screenplay.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 Release Date: When Can It Premiere?

The third installment of ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ is currently in its development phase. We do know that cast is on board, and so are crew members as the script is in place. However, the project still needs to be approved for production.

But with the huge fan-following the franchise has, and of course, the success of the past two installments, ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3’ is bound to happen in the future. Adding to the good news, there is also a musical being developed on the series! Since there are no release dates secured yet, we can only expect ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ 3 to release sometime around 2023 (given that it’s green-lit soon).

Irresponsible Sex Lesson

What's the story.

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS follows four high school girlfriends who separate for the summer and vow to keep in touch by way of a pair of blue jeans that magically fits all their different body sizes perfectly. They mail the jeans to one another, along with letters to keep up with what's happening in each other's lives. Lena ( Alexis Bledel ) is shy and quiet, on her way to Greece to visit relatives; aspiring documentary-maker Tibby ( Amber Tamblyn ) resents being stuck working at a local Wal-Mart-type store; golden girl Bridget ( Blake Lively ) is dealing with her mom's suicide and distant father as she heads to soccer camp in Mexico; and young writer Carmen ( America Ferrera ) goes to North Carolina to visit with her long-absent father, Al (Bradley Whitford), who announces he's about to marry Lydia (Nancy Travis), whose two blond teens seem complete opposites of Carmen. During their vacations, they explore their emerging senses of independence, while figuring out how to maintain relationships with their families and each other, and each girl learns a valuable life lesson.

Is It Any Good?

Based on Ann Brashares' novel of the same name, this movie is sometimes sentimental and ultimately sensible, and it's respectful of its strong girl characters and its audience. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants introduces its protagonists as general types but quickly grants them space to become interesting and complicated. The movie is about learning to appreciate what's in front of you as well as new experiences. But their most important lesson has to do with their mutual support and affection, which lasts over time.

Where too many movies treat a girl's losing her virginity as a singularly traumatic or excessively romantic event, this one shows it as a difficult event from which she learns, recovers, and moves on. If its resolutions are at times too neat, the movie also is refreshingly frank, allowing the girls to be confused, perceptive, foolish, mad, and generous -- just like girls can be.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 's depiction of loyalty and loss, especially as each of the girls loses something precious but also gains experience and faith in herself and her best friends. How do you support your friends when they feel sad or angry?

How can you be mad at someone but also, at the same time, still love him or her? How can loss also be an occasion for learning, sharing, and emotional maturation?

How does the movie compare to the book? Do the characters appear the way you imagined?

The girls make some mistakes but ultimately learn from them. Do you consider them role models? Which character did you identify with most?

How do the characters in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants demonstrate communication , compassion , and empathy ? Why are these important character strengths ?

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Reviews

travelling pants film

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a true charmer, a coming-of-age dramedy that treats adolescent girls with respect as it capitalizes on the power of friendship, individualism and life's possibilities.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Mar 14, 2023

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants thinks before it speaks and therefore is endearing and entertaining in a way that's empathetic without being sentimental.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 14, 2023

travelling pants film

The film achieves maximum amounts of emotional wallop without too much obvious sentimentality.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 14, 2023

There are some heavy-handed moments of affirmation in the film, but there is a likeable warmth to it, some strong performances and some grit and spark, particularly in the strand involving Ferrara.

Full Review | Mar 14, 2023

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is much better than that other movie about sisterhood (with Sandra Bullock), but less zingy than the exhaling women's movie or the Southern steel magnolias' comedy.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 14, 2023

The emotional candy that sustains this “Sisterhood” is too artificially sweetened to be filling, unless you really believe that one sentimental size fits all.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 14, 2023

It owes its substance to Brashares' eye and ear for teen psychology and to the solid performances by the four leads.

Full Review | Original Score: B+ | Mar 14, 2023

What saves the film is the way the problems of the four friends are handled, in mature and realistic ways. This makes The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants a welcome respite from the summer grind of big explosions and actors with even bigger egos.

travelling pants film

Schmaltz is delivered with such sincerity by The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that only the most jaded viewer wouldn't be moved. Usually that's me. Yet, there's something irresistible about Ken Kwapis' film.

A bounty of sympathetic characters, realistic writing and flawless performances, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants has the smarts and scenery to appeal to other age groups besides its target.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Mar 14, 2023

It is [America Ferrara] -- this extraordinarily confident and accomplished young actress -- who grounds this film in something real, giving it a much-needed boot up the pant, making each moment she's on screen powerful and a pleasure to watch.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 13, 2023

Extremely well-cast, well-made version of Ann Brashares' popular book will delight teenage and young adult fans.

Full Review | Mar 13, 2023

It’s all mostly warm and fuzzy until the film descends into multiple, tearjerking moments and trite resolutions. The performances are fine but after Mean Girls you may find this too sticky and sweet.

travelling pants film

Under Ken Kwapis' direction, each of the four young actresses delivers a performance that's modestly affecting, amusing and believable. And like the magical pants, the film surprisingly fits all sorts of viewers.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Mar 13, 2023

My inner 14-year-old girl came out snuffling and elated.

Director Ken Kwapis glosses up the stories unnecessarily and the final reel is feelgood cliché all the way. All credit to the girls.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 13, 2023

Each of them undergoes her own emotional catharsis, sympathy for which will depend on your tolerance for self-absorbed teen maundering and group hugs.

travelling pants film

This has the feeling of an authentic story, enriched by strong performances from a young cast and made with an unusual respect for its characters.

Anyone in the target demographic will do a lot of sniffling during the film, and a lot of hugging her friends afterwards.

travelling pants film

The rare movie that depicts young women realistically: excited, confused, impetuous and determined as they try to figure out who they are.

Sisterhood Movie [ ]

Plot synopsis [ ].

Maxresdefault

The movie centers around four teenage girls: Lena Kaligaris , Tabitha "Tibby" Tomko-Rollins , Bridget Vreeland , and Carmen Lowell . They are best friends and have been together all their lives in Bethesda, Maryland, but are about to separate for the summer. Lena is spending the summer in Greece with her grandparents; Tibby is staying at home; Bridget is going to soccer camp; and Carmen is visiting her father in South Carolina. On the eve of their separation, the girls visit a thrift shop and find a pair of pants that magically fits all four of them perfectly, although they have different measurements. The girls decide to share the pants among them equally over the summer as a way of keeping together when they are apart.

Lena, Tibby, Bridget, and Carmen part the next day, and the movie focuses on each girl separately.

One day in Greece, Lena is sitting at the dock, drawing (while wearing the traveling pants) when she accidentally falls in the water, and the leg of the pants gets caught on something. A young man swims over and sets her free, later introducing himself as Kostos, a Greek-American like her. A couple of days later, Lena learns from her grandparents that her family and Kostos' family are sworn enemies stemming from an old family feud. Despite this, Kostos continues to pursue Lena, and the two develop feelings for each other. At first, Lena is afraid to let herself love Kostos, but eventually begins to open up, sharing rides on his motorbike through the town, until they are spotted together, and Lena's relatives ask her to break up with Kostos.

The climax of the relationship comes one Saturday night close to the end of the summer, right before Kostos is about to leave town to return to Athens University. Kostos and Lena attend a party, and while they are dancing, Kostos tells Lena that he loves her. Before Lena can answer, Lena's family barges in, angrily pulling Lena away. Lena later confronts her grandfather and asks to go see Kostos before he leaves, which her grandfather agrees, Lena goes to the dock and calls out to Kostos, who gets off his ship. Kostos and Lena share a passionate kiss, and Lena confesses her love for him.

While on the job in Wallman's department store, Tibby hears a loud crashing sound, and finds a young girl who has fainted in the aisle. She frantically calls for help, and the girl is taken away in an ambulance. Later, when Lena from Greece mails the magical Pants to Tibby, they are delivered to the wrong house, and someone comes to Tibby's house to deliver them - coincidentally, Bailey Graffman, the girl who had fainted at Wallman's.

Fascinated by Tibby's movie, or "suckumentary", and her movie making, Bailey becomes Tibby's self-appointed assistant. Tibby is annoyed by this at first, but gradually grows to accept Bailey. She later learns from Bailey's neighbor that Bailey has leukemia.

Bailey eventually goes to the hospital with a bad infection. Tibby avoids the hospital for a while, but eventually visits Bailey, bringing the Traveling Pants. She offers them to Bailey and pleads with her to take them so that they can help her. Bailey responds by saying that the Pants have already worked their magic on Bailey by bringing her and Tibby together. After Tibby leaves, Tibby's home receives a phone call, saying that Bailey has died.

Tibby later decides to call her movie Bailey.

When Carmen comes back home from South Carolina, Tibby visits her to try and help her with her feelings of being snubbed by her father. Tibby later goes to Bridget's house along with Carmen in order to bring Bridget out of her depression.

Over the course of the movie, Tibby undergoes dramatic changes in outlook due to her time with Bailey.

Bridget [ ]

Shortly after arriving at soccer camp in Mexico, Bridget notices one of the coaches, Eric Richman, and inquires about him, to which the surrounding girls respond that flings with the coaches are against the rules. This information does not dissuade Bridget, as she immediately becomes single-minded in achieving what she wants: a relationship with Eric. She flirts with him and try im impress him in all kind of ways like showing of in soccer games and talking to eric all the time When Bridget's turn with the Traveling Pants finally comes, she puts them on that night and walks around outside Eric's cabin, leading him to the beach. The two begin kissing passionately and Bridget loses her virginity. The event leaves Bridget feeling empty and listless, and she remains that way for the rest of her time at soccer camp, as well as part of her time home. She is also dealing with the after-effects of her mother's depression and subsequent suicide, and always tries to prove that she is different. She is lifted from her depression by Carmen and Tibby, who come over to cheer her up after a concerned phone call from Lena. The next day, Bridget's dog Maggie runs off with the Traveling Pants, and Bridget follows her to get them back, only to run into Eric, who has come to visit on his way home. He apologizes to Bridget for what happened between them, and the two agree to be friends. However, Eric lets her know that she should give him a shot when she is 20, likely a huge soccer star in some college team, and all the guys are after her. He said that he wanted to have a chance with her so they could go out again.

Carmen, who has been raised in Maryland by her Puerto Rican single mother, arrives on a summer visit to her Anglo father's house in an attractive suburb of Charleston, South Carolina, and is startled when he informs her he is planning a marriage to Lydia, a blonde divorcee with a teenage son and daughter. Carmen is disappointed at not having her father to herself and confused as to why he hadn't told her of his situation before, but she firmly insists on the phone to her mother that she is not mad at him, and that everything will be fine.

Over the summer, Carmen's frustration and resentment build up, eventually exploding when Carmen throws a rock through the window while her father, Lydia, and Lydia's children, Krista and Paul, are eating dinner. Carmen runs away and catches a bus back to Maryland. It takes her awhile to admit to herself that she is mad at her father, but she eventually does, calling him to tell him so and asking him what she did wrong and why he had left her mother years before.

Carmen later receives a phone call from Lena, who has just read one of Bridget's letters and is concerned about her. Carmen and Tibby go to Bridget's house to comfort her. Later, Lena, Bridget, and Tibby all drag Carmen to her father's wedding. Carmen is extremely reluctant to go at first, but does so with the help of her friends and the Traveling Pants. At the wedding ceremony which is outdoors, Carmen's father apologizes to her in front of all the guests.

Differences between the Film and the Novel [ ]

In the book [ ].

  • The girls are all fifteen at the beginning and turn sixteen at the end of the summer. In the movie, the girls begin the summer at sixteen (As in the book, Bridget lies about her age to the coach, saying she is 17).
  • Lena is the oldest; in the movie, Bridget is older.
  • Lena has a younger sister named Effie, who is one year Lena's junior, but she doesn't appear until the upcoming movie.
  • Bridget has a twin brother. In the movie, she does not.
  • Carmen lives in an apartment. In the movie, she lives in a house.
  • Lena has straight hair and green eyes. In the movie, her hair is wavy and her eyes are blue.
  • It is stated that Bridget's mother died while the girls were eleven years old. In the movie, it is implied that she died fairly recently by committing suicide. In both the book and movie, it basically says that she was depressed. In sequels to the book, it is revealed that she committed suicide by injecting herself with an unknown substance.
  • There is a babysitter named Loretta who looks after Tibby's two siblings, Katherine and Nicky. The task is left to Tibby in the movie.
  • Bailey and her mother call Tibby and ask that she come visit Bailey in the hospital. In the movie, Tibby receives phone calls while she mopes about Bailey's inevitable death, but does not answer them.
  • In the third book, we see that Tibby has been a vegetarian since the age of nine. In the movie, Tibby eats pepperoni pizza.
  • Lena first meets Kostos at her grandparent's house, not by nearly drowning.
  • In the book and the movie, it is left up to the audience to determine if Bridget and Eric had sex. However, in the book, Eric tries to smooth things over by talking to Bridget but she is too hurt and falls into a state of depression evident in the second book. But the pair eventually reconcile at the end of the third book. In the movie, Eric goes to Maryland to apologize to Bridget.-
  • Lena's Valia has no problem with Kostos. In fact, it is Valia that tries to hook Kostos up with Lena. Kostos and Bapi are also very close.
  • Paul has a girlfriend named Kelly Marquette, whom Carmen dubs Skeletor. They later break up. She is not mentioned in the movie.
  • It is the death of Lydia's mother that prevents her from having an official wedding, not her father.
  • Lena called her grandmother 'Valia'. In the movie, she called her 'Yia Yia'. She also called her grandfather "Papou", when in the book, he is called Bapi.(Yia Yia and Papou actually mean grandmother and grandfather in Greek.)
  • Effie goes with Lena to Greece, while in the movie Lena goes alone and Effie is never mentioned. The pants are discovered by Carmen who was out with Lena, and lena's mother and sister, Effie, while shopping for Effie's prom dress. the pants are not tried on by every girl until after the purchase. In the movie, all four girls are out shopping and purchase the pants together after each trying them on.-The book said bridget's mom died at christmas time. This is not mentioned in the movie. Also, unlike the movie, the book does not say that the other girls' mom attended the funeral. it was made known that the women did not stay friends.
  • Carmen describes them as being one complete person "bridget the athelete, lena the beauty, tibby the rebel, and carmen the...what?" this is described differently in the movie.
  • In the book, it nowhere describes Tibby as having blue streaks in her hair. No birthdays were celebrated in the movie, even though the book states they all have summer birthdays.
  • In the book, Tibby has a pet guinea pig named Mimi, who later dies. In the movie, Mimi is mentioned only briefly -- and her death is not part of the plot.
  • In the book, Bridget does not own a dog. In the movie, she does. -In the movie, Eric's hair is blond. In the book, it states that Eric's hair is dark and wavy, that he has dark skin, and that he is half Mexican. -In the movie, it was Bailey's neighbor who told Tibby about Bailey's disease. In the book, it was Bailey's mom who told her. -In the book, Bailey meets Tibby for the first time after her accident when Tibby visits her at home. In the movie, Bailey is the one to visit Tibby at Tibby's home. There is no mix-up with the pants being delivered to the wrong address in the book. It does not say in the book that Bailey and Tibby live on the same street.

In the Film [ ]

  • Kostos helps out his grandfather by fishing. In the book, he works as a welder.
  • The girls break into Gilda's by climbing a ladder and going through a window. In the book, they use bobby pins to pick a lock and proceed to the second floor.
  • It is Lena's grandmother that discovers her drawings of Kostos. In the book, it is Effie.
  • The rules of the pants are decreed verbally. In the book, they are recorded on stolen stationery.
  • In the movie, Tibby has no love interests. In the book, her fancy temporarily focuses on Tucker Rowe, whom she believes to be "hot." Later on, Bailey convinces her that it is Brian McBrian who is worthwhile, not Tucker. In the end of the movie, we see Tibby and Brian standing together outside the store, which implies that they are friends now.
  • It is only Carmen who cries on the phone while confronting her father. In the book, both of them cry. In the movie, Tibby is present; in the book, she is not mentioned as being there. At her father's wedding in the book, Carmen dresses up, though still with the pants on. In the movie, her attire is much more casual.
  • Carmen is accompanied by her three friends at the wedding. In the book, she goes alone.
  • Carmen is a bridesmaid at the wedding. In the book, she sits in a pew, making meaningful eye contact with her father.
  • In the movie, Carmen meets Lydia and her kids in front of the house. In the book, they meet inside the house, where Krista kisses Carmen's cheek and Paul shakes her hand.
  • Bridget first tells Eric that she is seventeen. In the book, she first tells him that she is sixteen.
  • It is Tibby who hears that Carmen is angry with her father. In the book, it is Carmen's mother.
  • Lena's Bapi confronts Kostos for dating Lena. In the book, it is Kostos' grandfather that is assaulted by Bapi.
  • Lena and Kostos date for much of the summer. In the book, despite their feelings for each other, Lena and Kostos only get together at the end of the summer, shortly before Lena returns to the U.S.
  • It seems that Krista holds Carmen in contempt. In the book, Krista actually becomes fascinated with her, later to the point of emulation (as seen in the book sequel, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood).
  • Paul is nowhere to be seen while Carmen is getting fitted for a dress for her father's wedding. In the book, he says something to her as she leaves.
  • Carmen's dad is the one who answers the phone to hear Carmen's tirade about being abandoned. In the book, it is Lydia who answers; she hands the phone to Carmen's father.
  • Bailey is awake when Tibby visits her in the hospital. In the book, she is asleep. Once Tibby goes home in the movie, Bailey dies. In the book, Tibby is consistently visiting her.
  • Bridget has a large home. In the book, it is said that it is rather small and run-down.
  • Carmen and Tibby come to visit Bridget in the movie and Bridget eventually gets better. In the book(s), it takes Bridget about a year to heal from Eric.
  • Bridget invokes a rule #11. In the book the 10 original rules stay the same.
  • Bridget states a #11 rule. In one of the books, it is Lena who, to herself, figures that there is an unstated #11 rule.

" The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants " is an iconic story of friendship.

It's been 15 years since the first movie had four best friends — played by Alexis Bledel , Blake Lively , America Ferrera , and Amber Tamblyn — find a pair of jeans that fit them all. On August 6, 2008, the foursome reunited for more adventures in the sequel, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2."

Here's a look at what the casts of both movies have been up to.

Is Paul Mescal the Indie Pete Davidson? A Very Serious Investigation

‘NORMAL’ PEOPLE

Tabloids have started tracking the love life of the Irish actor with a fervor not typically reserved for a critics’ darling indie actor. Why are we so intrigued by who he’s dating?

Kayleigh Donaldson

Over the weekend, TMZ published images of actor Paul Mescal on what looked like a dinner date with musician and newest Taylor Swift BFF Gracie Abrams. The pair seemed cozy, and as happens whenever two random hot celebrities are standing within close proximity of one another, the internet immediately decided that they were dating. Would you blame Gracie for shooting her shot with indie cinema’s favorite Irishman?

Abrams is actually the fourth woman to have been the subject of Mescal dating rumors in 2024. Ayo Edebiri posted an Instagram story of herself alongside Mescal to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and fans either assumed a romance or hoped for one. Around that same time, British tabloid The Mirror claimed that he was spotted kissing Australian actress Sophie Wilde at a BAFTAs after-party. THEN in late May, he was seen hanging out with Natalie Portman in London, sharing a few laughs and sending body language experts into a frenzy.

The All of Us Strangers star is now at that level of fame where the world just decides that every woman who breathes the same air as him must be jumping the Irishman’s bones. The Abrams news had fans wondering if Mescal is the Pete Davidson of the A24 crowd, the go-to fling for ladies who like a sweet but slightly sad boy who rocks the shortest of shorts and has Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s phone number. Sure, none of these relationships have been confirmed—really, Mescal hasn’t been in a confirmed romance since he dated musician Phoebe Bridgers—but the sheer possibility is fuel enough for fans.

It just makes sense. Who would be the perfect post-divorce fling for Natalie Portman after her French ballerina husband reportedly cheated on her ? The sitting president of the Tortured Man Club! Oh, Sophie Wilde is a rising star who has a lot of doors open to her? Let her fall into the arms of County Kildare’s finest. Remember that time he was, for a hot second, linked to Angelina Jolie ? She could use a melancholy younger man in her life so why not this one? In the age of the Hot Rodent Boyfriend , Mescal is a classic choice for lusting of all varieties: a good fit for all women, the little black dress of drama school boys.

Every generation gets their hot slutty guy, from Valentino to Warren Beatty to the aforementioned Davidson. Granted, Mescal will have to increase his workload to match the alleged 13,000 women that Beatty pulled over the course of his illustrious career (any volunteers?) One of the reasons Pete Davidson fascinates us so much is because he makes his endless cycle of romance seem easy.

Men are often baffled by Davidson’s prowess given that he doesn’t look like, well, Paul Mescal, but it makes total sense to most women. There is something to be said about a funny guy in touch with his emotions who is guaranteed to show you a good time. He’s a good fit for everyone, whether it’s post-Kanye Kim Kardashian , rising star Phoebe Dynevor, or unashamed romantic Ariana Grande . The more a guy is seen with women who seem delighted to be in his presence, and the more his reputation builds, the greater his legend becomes. At this point in history, Pete Davidson is basically the jeans from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , or that one guy on Sex and the City who was an expert at oral.

Not every lothario is appealing, of course. The more Leonardo DiCaprio dates young models then ditches them Logan’s Run style when they turn 25, the creepier and less alluring he looks. There’s a fine line between dirtbag sexy and fuckboy gross. Every woman Davidson dated seemed to know what they were getting in for, as Kardashian noted when she said she approached him at first because she just wanted some of that good capital D. You go in, get your laughs and screams, then flourish.

Is that what’s happening with Mescal? Again, we have no idea, and now that he’s in that part of his career where he’s tabloid bait through merit of being hot and talented, the myth has started to expand beyond his grasp. But there is a reason we want to put Mescal into this mold. His career so far has been largely defined by roles of aching romantic melancholy, raw sex appeal, and sheer emotional agony, and alongside actors with whom he has the most astonishing heat.

He broke out in Normal People , perhaps the great millennial romantic drama, playing a student whose relationship with a more affluent woman was achingly real (as was his chemistry with co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones.) In Aftersun , for which he garnered his first Oscar nomination, his performance as a single dad perfectly captured the double-edged sword of growing up and realizing your father is indeed just human. He's at his most gut-wrenching (and hottest) in All of Us Strangers , as the love interest of Andrew Scott in a film that is impossible not to sob hysterically at. And let’s not forget the great sexy brute of the legitimate theater, Stanley Kowalski, who Mescal played to sweaty perfection on the West End stage in a recent production of A Streetcar Named Desire . Did he bear his forearms and roll around in the rain? Yes, he did!

Mescal is a private man who probably isn’t wild about the fact that so many people are probing into his love life. We can’t blame him for that. He just wants to wear his teeny shorts, look good while smoking, and keep working with the best directors on the planet.

One of the reasons the indie Pete Davidson narrative fits so well is that he’s enough of a blank slate for us to project that onto him. The little we do know of his love life only fuels that, such as his time with indie rock queen Bridgers and a prevailing TikTok rumor that he ditches his one-night stands by taking them on a walk in the park and then running away (he may have poked fun at this rumor during an appearance on Chicken Shop Date , because we love a self-aware king.) Regardless, Mescal is heading towards the A-List. The world is his oyster, and if he wants to sow his wild oats, we know a few thousand women who would be honored to join him in his quest.
