When the Rolling Stones Became a Quartet on ‘Voodoo Lounge’

The early '90s were a transformative time for the Rolling Stones . Not long after the release of their 1991 live album Flashpoint , original bassist Bill Wyman exited the band, permanently trimming the Stones lineup down to a quartet. But rather than wallowing in Wyman's departure, the shake-up helped them turn in their strongest studio effort in more than a decade, Voodoo Lounge , which was released on July 3, 1994.

The record was the first Stones album with new bassist Darryl Jones, who had been hired that March after an extensive search. A protege of Miles Davis who also played on Sting 's The Dream of the Blue Turtles album, it was Jones' jazz background that reportedly  appealed to vocalist Mick Jagger and drummer Charlie Watts .

Jones had laid down some tracks during the initial sessions in Ireland in the fall of 1993, but it wasn't until he was called into help put some finishing touches in Los Angeles a few months later that he learned he had the job.

"One night I went down to the studio, and met Keith [Richards] , who asked if I’d seen Charlie," he said. "I said no, then he says, ‘Charlie asked me if we were going to play with you? We’ve auditioned all those guys, chose you to play on the record – I don’t think we’re now gonna go choose someone else’. Charlie said, ‘Maybe someone should tell him!’ So I’m telling you, you’re gonna go with us’, and that was the first I heard of it!"

To help assemble their first studio record since 1989's Steel Wheels , the group enlisted Don Was, the former Was (Not Was) bassist who had recently helmed successful albums by Bonnie Raitt , Bob Seger and Jackson Browne .

Watch the Rolling Stones' 'Love Is Strong' Video

Was told Rolling Stone magazine that he was invited to discuss the possibility producing the album, only to be given a lecture from Richards on why the group really didn't need a producer. He conceded that he wouldn't be producing the Stones but thought to himself: "At least I've got something to tell my grandchildren."

Of course, Was did eventually come on board for the making of Voodoo Lounge . Was told Sound on Sound that he felt his role was to help identify what would help make for the strongest songs, as opposed to trying to force his concept of what a Rolling Stones record should be.

"I never felt that my job was to impose creative concepts on them, but just to help distill the wealth of ideas that they had," Was said. "I would point things out if I didn't think something was going to work, but I didn't think it was my position to say, 'Here, Keith, give me your guitar for a minute. I'll show you what to play'. That would be like grabbing the sax from Charlie Parker! Keith's got so many ideas and they're all so original that I couldn't come up with them in a 100 years. That's the amazing thing – the simplicity of what he does is so deceptive. There's so much happening within a few notes."

The Rolling Stones had certainly endured their share of internal band strife in the decade prior to Voodoo Lounge . The band was in total disarray during the making of Dirty Work , providing the Stones with what was perhaps their lowest of moments.

Richards acknowledged that they had come through those rough waters, and felt that Voodoo Lounge was the first Stones record in a significant amount of time where the band was operating as a cohesive unit. "To not just sound like the Stones but be them," he told Rolling Stone . "Like I told Mick, 'You gotta play a lot of harp.' Because with the Stones, that was one of the original instruments. And his phrasing is so uncanny on the harp. If that can roll over onto the vocals. After all, it's just pushing air out of your mouth."

Voodoo Lounge was the Rolling Stones' opportunity to prove that, despite being elder statesmen, they could indeed still rock. The album's first single (and its accompanying eye-catching video), "Love Is Strong" featured some great bluesy harmonica while another of the album's tracks, "You Got Me Rocking," became a staple of the Stones dynamic live show. Even the HBO television show The Sopranos acknowledged the coolness of Voodoo Lounge , featuring "Thru and Thru" in the Season Two finale of the show in 2000.

Watch the Rolling Stones Perform 'Out of Tears'

As much as Voodoo Lounge had the band working together better than they had in years, more than a year after its release, Jagger nonetheless had mixed feelings about the record – and in particular Was' decisions – in an in-depth interview  with Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner.

"I think it’s a good frame of reference of what the Rolling Stones were about during that quite limited time in Ireland in that year," he said. "It’s very much a kind of time-and-place album. In that way, I was quite pleased with the results. But there were a lot of things that we wrote for Voodoo Lounge that Don [Was] steered us away from: Groove songs, African influences and things like that. And he steered us very clear of all that. And I think it was a mistake."

In his defense, Was said he was "certainly not anti-groove, just anti-groove without substance in the context of this album. They had a number of great grooves. But it was like, 'Okay, what goes on top of it? Where does it go?' I just felt that it's not what people were looking for from the Stones. I was looking for a sign that they can get real serious about this, still play better than anybody and write better than anybody."

Despite Jagger's issues with Was at the time, they appear to be water under the bridge now. Was continued as a steady presence with the Rolling Stones after Voodoo Lounge . And while it might not have completely met Jagger's expectations, the album became the band's first No. 1 record in their native Britain since 1980's Emotional Rescue . The international tour in support of Voodoo Lounge grossed hundreds of millions of dollars over 117 dates performed on six continents.

The record also garnered the band a Grammy award for Best Rock Album, while the video for "Love Is Strong" also won for Best Short Form Music Video. Amazingly, it was the first Grammys the Rolling Stones ever claimed, even though they were awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 1986.

Rolling Stones Bring ‘Voodoo Lounge’ Tour to an End

By Eric Boehlert

Eric Boehlert

T he Voodoo Lounge is officially closed. After playing 117 dates on six continents and grossing hundreds of millions of dollars, the Rolling Stones have shut down their world tour. Talk persisted that the band would return to South America this spring and then to Southeast Asia as part of the tour’s final leg but those plans fell apart in January when the South American promoter was unable to finalize plans.

While phenomenally successful, the Voodoo Lounge tour was also incredibly expensive, requiring a small army of up to 450 employees a show. Without revenues from the lucrative South American dates, the costly Asian stint was ruled out. The band’s spokeswoman said no contracts were signed for the canceled shows and no tickets were sold. “We hope to play to fans in those markets in the future,” read a statement from the band and its promoter.

Album Review: Voodoo Lounge

The Voodoo Lounge tour stands as the most successful in North American history. Thanks in part to ticket prices of $50-plus, the tour’s 60 dates in 1994 brought in $121 million, according to Pollstar magazine. (The band’s 1989 Steel Wheels tour, which grossed $98 million, held the industry’s previous high mark.) In ’95, the Voodoo Lounge tour expanded beyond the States to include the Far East and Europe. By the time of the tour’s final date, in the Netherlands, more than 6 million fans had seen the show. When sales of tickets, T-shirts and television rights were added up, the tour had taken in $300 million.

The Voodoo Lounge tour was in support of the band’s 1994 release of the same name. Instead of the full-fledged concert record that normally follows Rolling Stones tours, the band opted for 1995’s live acoustic album Stripped . Keith Richards is one Stone who isn’t taking a well-deserved break; he’s recording in Jamaica, and a reggae-flavored solo release may be out by year’s end.

This is a story from the February 22, 1996 issue of Rolling Stone.

In the midst of their Hackney Diamonds tour across North America, The Rolling Stones have confirmed a 30th anniversary celebration of their hit 1994 album, Voodoo Lounge . To commemorate the milestone, The Stones are reissuing the record on limited edition red and yellow colored vinyl and with a bonus 10″ featuring single B-Sides, “I’m Gonna Drive,” “So Young,” “Jump On Top of Me,” and ‘The Storm’ – exclusive to the official Rolling Stones store. The release is due out on July 12.

Additionally, the band has revealed a new collection of Voodoo Lounge merchandise featuring vintage design t-shirts and hoodies for whether you are listening at home or seeing the band out on the road this summer. A number of limited edition bundles are also available. Check out all the new merch below.

Released on September 3, 1994, Voodoo Lounge marked the band’s first collaboration with their new label, Virgin Records. It was the long awaited follow-up to their 1989 hit, Steel Wheels . Anchored by the hit singles like “You Got Me Rocking,” “Love Is Strong,” “Out of Tears,” and “I Go Wild,” the record hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and took the top spot on the UK Albums Chart.

Last month, The Rolling Stones kicked off their highly anticipated  Hackney Diamonds Tour  at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The rock icons rolled through a hit-filled set after a fantastic opening performance by Gary Clark Jr. The album that got the most play was The Stones’ latest,  Hackney Diamonds . They cranked out the lead single “Angry,” and gave “Mess It Up” its live debut. The started their two-track encore with “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”

Other highlights includes “Start Me Up,” “Beasts of Burden, “Miss You,” “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Jumpin’ Back Flash,” and many more. They played “Little T&A” for the first time since 2016, with guitarist Keith Richards handling lead vocal duties. They wrapped things up with their classic hit, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

Check out the full setlist below plus fan-filmed footage from the show HERE .

The list of opening acts for The Stones’ current tour is quite impressive. The group pulls from all genres, with one artist serving as The Stones’ special guest every night. Rockers Gary Clark Jr., Joe Bonamassa, The Pretty Reckless, Widespread Panic, The Linda Lindas, and The Beaches will each be performing on a date throughout the run. The trek also includes Icelandic blues rockers KALEO, who supported Greta Van Fleet on their recent global arena trek. Additionally, country chart-topper Lainey Wilson and folk crossover juggernaut Tyler Childers will also be performing.

The Stones’ North American stadium tour will see frontman Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, and guitarist Ronnie Wood perform at stadiums across the continent. Produced by AEG and Concerts West, The Hackney Diamonds Tour wraps up on July 17 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The run includes stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Orlando, Atlanta, and more.

Last October, The Rolling Stones released their acclaimed new album,  Hackney Diamonds . The record hit No. 1 in 19 countries around the globe, and features the  GRAMMY®-nominated  single, “Angry.” After announcing their North American stadium tour last week, the band has confirmed a forthcoming expanded release of their latest studio effort.

On October 19, 2023, The Stones played a  secret club show  in New York City to launch the release of their new record. The invitation-only gig took place at Racket NYC (formerly Highline Ballroom). There were approximately 650 people at the show. Among those reportedly in attendance were GRAMMY® Award winners Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz ( The Constant Gardener ,  The Mummy ), comedian and actor Chris Rock, actress and entrepreneur Mary-Kate Olsen, and star of the  007  franchise, actor Daniel Craig.

The band played a brief seven-song that began with “Shattered” from 1978’s  Some Girls . The debuted their new album’s lead single “Angry” next. They would also play “Whole Wide World” and “Bite My Head Off” from the new record. The Stones also treated fans to performances of their classic hits “Tumbling Dice” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

For the encore, they played another new song, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” for the very first time. The track, from their new album, features none other than GRAMMY® Award winners Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. To the surprise of all in attendance, Lady Gaga joined The Stones on stage for the performance.

Their 23rd original studio effort,  Hackney Diamonds  will also be The Rolling Stones’ first album without founding drummer Charlie Watts who  passed away  at 80 in August of 2021. During a live-streaming event hosted by  The Tonight Show ‘s Jimmy Fallon, the band revealed that two tracks on the album – “Mess It Up” and “Live by the Sword” – were recorded in 2019 with Watts on drums.

“Ever since Charlie’s gone, it’s different,” guitarist Keith Richards said during the event. “He’s ‘Number Four.’”

Matt Mitchell wrote a great article.

I guess he says he has communist values and found some agreement with past Stones lyrics.

But I tell you, after following the Stones for decades, The Rolling Stones are definitely a money making capitalist well oiled machine.

Their tours among other things are some of the biggest grossing and profitable ventures in the business.

And they earn it too.

Hi Robert, Of course they are! Both. There still is some romantic scent left from the 60ies, 70ies – remember their opening Song from the last EU tour…

  • Music History

The Wolf & Action Jackson are HUGE Rolling Stones fans and count seeing the Steel Wheels Tour live in their respective cities as an important moment in their lives. Though the Stones never said it, many figured the Steel Wheels Tour would be the last chance for many people to ever see the Stones play. And because Bill Wyman retired after that tour, one could argue that definitely signaled the end of an era. Fast forward 5 years later and our hosts are in college, had been roommates, and went crazy for Keith Richards 1992 solo effort Main Offender. When the Stone s announced they'd signed a new $44 million deal with Virgin and would be putting out a new album with Darryl Jones on the bass, the boys were psyched. Not only would that mean some new Keith songs to hear on the album but that there would be a new tour - another chance to see the Stones live! This made for a special time in the boys lives and we've chosen to review this album to remember those heady days. However, even at the time the boys didn't love Voodoo Lounge. Producer Don Was tried to play up some funky grooves and call backs to their heyday but the end result was long (over an hour) and a disappointment outside of the songs Keith Richards sang. Still, our heroes go track x track here to unveil what was happening in Stones World at the time, which songs are worth keeping, which songs would have made better b-sides and what they loved about the tour. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- At this point, we can rest assured we’re going to hear the Rolling Stones play certain songs when they go on tour -- “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” for instance, or “Tumbling Dice,” “Miss You,” “Start Me Up,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (the last song the group played in Cleveland, back on Oct. 14, 2002) and other staples.

It’s the surprise songs that really make a Stones show a gas, gas, gas.

The venerable group has been offering quite a bit of those on its Hackney Diamonds Tour, which kicked off April 28 in Houston and arrives at Cleveland Browns Stadium -- the Stones’ first Cleveland appearance in a dozen years -- on Saturday. Each show has had at least a couple of tour debuts, one often decided by an online fan vote and the others thrown into the mix to shake up the usual setlist, at least a little.

Some of the band choices so far have included performances of “Emotional Rescue,” “Midnight Rambler,” “She’s So Cold,” “Time is On My Wide,” “Out of Time” (for the first time ever in the U.S.), “Beast of Burden” and the Keith Richards-sung favorites “Happy and “Little T&A.” Voting is currently taking place for fans to make their mark on the Cleveland show, and there’s no telling what special selection Richards, Mick Jagger, Ron Wood and company may pull out of the catalog.

There’s no way to tell, of course, but you can certainly find predictions and even wagers out there. Us? We’re not putting any money down but we certainly have a wish list, and we’d be delighted with a special inclusion of any of these 11 from the Stones songbook...

“Not Fade Away:” How about a throwback to the group’s first Cleveland appearance, for “The Mike Douglas Show” on June 18, 1964? This Buddy Holly cover gave the Stones its first appearance on the Billboard charts (at No. 48) and was its first Top 5 single in the U.K. It would be a nice trip through the past, and not darkly, almost 60 years to the day.

“Carol:” Another one from the “The Mike Douglas Show,” this one a Chuck Berry cover that came out as a single 60 years ago this month.

“Time is On My Side:” Though not written by Jagger and Richards, this Jerry Ragavoy tune -- first recorded by Kai Winding, then Irma Thomas, whose version the Stones’ heard -- could well be considered ABOUT the Stones at this point. Sixty-two years and counting, time is more their friend than their enemy, making this a particularly poignant candidate for performance.

“Street Fighting Man:” The 1968 counterculture anthem opened the Stones’ last Cleveland appearance, on Oct. 14, 2002 at Gund Arena. Another opportunity to touch on the group’s history here.

“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking:” The ultimate jam from 1971′s “Sticky Fingers” album always goes down a storm on stage, with plenty of room for Wood, Richards and the current saxophonist (Karl Denson and Tim Ries this time out) to stretch out and give Jagger a few minutes to rest those still-spry hips.

“All Down the Line:” “Exile on Main Street” is too good, and important, of an album to be represented by just one song (“Tumbling Dice”) in the setlist. Any number of additional tracks from the set could work, but you can be confident this would keep the energy level high.

“Respectable:” “When the Whip Comes Down” would also be a nice rarity from the “Some Girls” album, but it’s been a long time since this rocker’s been aired out. It would definitely be a stadium-shaker.

“Waiting On a Friend:” The Top 20 hit from “Tattoo You” -- originally from “Goats Head Soup” sessions in Jamaica and finally released in 1981 -- was a change of pace for the Stones and would be the same in concert. It would be especially nice to hear what Karl Denson or Tim Ries would do with the saxophone solo.

“I Go Wild:” A semi-deep cut (it was a single) from 1994′s “Voodoo Lounge” went over very well when it was performed in concerts that year. It would be a curve ball, but a good one.

“Rough Justice:” “A Bigger Bang,” the Stones’ last studio album of original material prior to “Hackney Diamonds,” has undeservedly disappeared from the group’s legacy. This, its opening track and first single, boasts the kind of guitar-drenched drive we love best about the Stones, while the relationship described in the lyrics could be about a lover or the volatile Jagger-Richards axis.

“Bite My Head Off:” “Hackney Diamonds” is certainly getting its due on the tour named after it, but we’d still love to hear what the Stones could do on stage with this rocker that’s even angrier than the first single, “Angry.”

Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds hit makes triumphant return to setlist

A fter sitting out the last three shows, the Rolling Stones ‘ “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” has returned to their 2024 “Hackney Diamonds” tour setlist. They scared fans when Mick Jagger began taking an extended mid-set break and dropped the song from the encore.

During the Stones’ show at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, they played a tour-high 20 songs. Keith Richards still got to sing three songs — “Tell Me Straight,” “Little T&A,” and “Happy.”

For the past three shows, they only played “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” in their encore. Previously, the Stones paired it with “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.” It was recorded with Lady Gaga and was the second single from Hackney Diamonds. Dropping it and Jagger’s extended absences in the middle of the set worried fans.

Luckily, they may have found the best of both worlds. Jagger still gets a three-song rest in the middle of the show. And fans can still hear “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”

What is Hackney Diamonds?

Hackney Diamonds is the Rolling Stones’ twenty-fourth studio album. However, it is the band’s first album of original music since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. They released Blue and Lonesome in 2016, an album of blues covers.

Before the album came out, the Stones released two singles. “Angry” was first released on September 6, 2023, with “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” following on September 28. “Mess It Up” was released as a single the same day the album dropped, October 20.

The album was the Stones’ first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts. In turn, they turned to some friends to collaborate with them. Andrew Watt produced the album and Elton John, Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and former Rolling Stones bassist Billy Wyman featured on the album.

In support of the album, the Rolling Stones are embarking on the “Hackney Diamonds” tour, a 20-show journey that commenced on April 28, 2024. They are playing in major stadiums across North America and will conclude the tour with a show in Ridgedale, Missouri on July 21.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood are all present for the tour. They are backed by the likes of Chanelle Haynes and Darryl Jones.

The Rolling Stones were at Empower Field in Denver Thursday night for one of just 16 stops on a North American tour, and they delighted local fans before ever taking the stage.

One day before the event, the legendary rock band unveiled what appears to be a concert poster featuring one of the Mile High City’s own wild, wild horses, “Mustang.” Or as you colloquially know him, Blucifer .

In the graphic, the local icon sports his signature red eyes as well as the Stones’ classic tongue and lips logo. Concert producer AEG Presents confirmed the poster, created by artist Miles Wintner , was available for sale at the show.

Couldn’t make it? No sweat — the poster is also available for $50 in the band’s online shop . The image is also available on a T-shirt for the same price .

Donald Sutherland has died at 88. Sutherland's agents say he died in Miami on Thursday after a long illness. The Canadian actor's career stretched from “M.A.S.H” to “JFK” to “The Hunger Games." He was known for offbeat characters and epitomized the unpredictable, antiestablishment cinema of the 1970s. But over the decades, Sutherland shifted into a career as a respected character actor. He said he found more challenge in those roles. He never stopped working, ultimately appearing in nearly 200 films and series. He received an honorary Oscar in 2017.
