The Gardens

The gardens encompass 10 hectares, replete with ancient trees including sequoias, cork oaks and almost 100 species of camellias. The trails criss-cross and connect between chalets, the lake and other nooks and crannies, where special moments can unfold.

The Garden of Vandoma – patron saint of the city of Porto – is a stunning space, with a huge lawn surrounded by trees and finished with a fountain, the sound of which lends the spot a particular tranquillity. It is the perfect site for small, open-air events.

Adega Velha (Old Cellar)

This is the mystical place where our brandies are aged, where the weight of tradition is palpable and the aroma of pure winemaking fills the air.

A visit to the cellars is not to be missed and is an integral part of guided tours.

Amidst the greenery of rare centuries-old tree species, visitors witness the surround vineyards, and get involved with the viticulture stories, processes and details as climate, soil and local grapes, globally understanding the Vinho Verde wine region.

The tour was amazing, we learned so much, not only about the property but Portuguese history. Cristina was amazing, knew her stuff and just very personable. The property itself makes you feel like you're in a storybook. It's just enchanting. I see reviews about not being able to tour the property on their own.. but this is still a private property that contains a home for the family to enjoy. For that reason, I totally understand why they don't allow for anyone just to roam freely. The family also needs their privacy. With that being said, touring with a guide is even better because otherwise, you wouldn't know what each of these structures on the property meant to the owners and the purpose of them being built.

I think this is the most beautiful winery I’ve ever been to. Grounds are absolutely gorgeous and it felt like a scene out of the Hobbit. Just wonderful.

He is passionate about his country but also about you learning about it and enjoying it as a local. We were a private tour (US married couple in 50s) and eight hours in a car with a guide could have been, well, tedious for them and us. But there wasn’t a minute that we thought Nuno was just “dialing it in”. The tour starts straight away with Nuno giving some Porto history as you drive out of the city. And, it really never stops! He tells you interesting facts all along the drive. The first stop was at a winery, but not one of the large mass producers. It is an intimate family owned vineyard with exceptional wines and port. It feels like you snuck into the family dining table in an elegant but casual way. Everyone was friendly, funny and knowledgeable. Next up was the journey through the valley on our way to the Douro River boat tour. There are no words that can describe how beautiful this is. The vastness of the natural scenery mixed with the historical villages is like nothing you’ll see anywhere else. And Nuno narrates as you go so you understand what you are looking at and it’s importance. The river boat ride is more along the commercial side, but is not bad. Plenty of seating, a bar and fairly brief (20 mins ea way up and back). On either side you are seeing the range of vineyards-huge to small and it is just gorgeous (even on a rainy day like ours). The river itself is tranquil and the ride is a great time to just relax and soak in the experience of thousands before you responsible for moving the grapes and wine down the river. Nuno was right there waiting for us as we got off the boat-super easy. Next up was a short (but spectacular) drive up to lunch. THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT!! Every person visiting a country wants to feel like they are having an authentic experience. Lunch is in a tiny village, in a small “restaurant” which is a woman’s home that she has converted. You dine upstairs in a room set aside for your tour and the meal is fish or meat with sides. On our tour we started with olives in honey (try it!), oranges, olive oil and bread. The star was homemade “strudel”. The meal was Hake fish, Roasted Pork in port wine sauce, potatoes, rice, salad, carrot cake and local wines. The meal was voted our favorite from a five day trip through Spain/Portugal that included a Michelin starred restaurant. It is that good. The final stop after a brief drive down into the valley was at a small village square where we soaked up some Sun, had a traditional cocktail of white wine, tonic and lemon. Hung out with the locals (patrons and dogs) and were serenaded by the next door church’s bells. Every single part of this tour was jaw dropping gorgeous and historically fascinating. There is nothing we would change or suggest. We are picky-spoiled on good food and great travels and we can still say that. If you are hesitant for any reason-don’t. We almost cancelled thinking it wouldn’t be good on a rainy day and in hindsight that would have been the regret of a lifetime. Read more Written 21 September 2023

Planning an overseas trip for 6 people with 3 being of them being over 90 years old with mobility and special health issues was a huge concern and Yourtours and their caring staff really made the process a less stressful and enjoyable one. We felt we were in good hands. We booked our airport to hotels transfer as well as 3 full day tours with 1 tour being a custom tour. Yourtours recognized our specific special needs and limitations and provided support to meet them. The logistical coordination and communication were amazing. We were met by Pascal S. at the airport. He was a warm and very friendly greeting after a long overnight flight which was so nice. He was very kind and super efficient and went above and beyond helping us get our 16+ pieces of luggage plus 3 walkers settled with the transport and then he rode with us to our hotel and made sure we were all set with check in. We did 3 days of tours. Porto, a custom Chaves tour designed for my 93year old father, and Braga & Guimaraes. I can’t begin to say enough wonderful things about our tour guide Nuno M. He was so friendly, considerate, caring, kind, infinitely patient, and his in depth knowledge of the geographical area and Portugal’s rich history, culture and food made the tours very enjoyable and extremely interesting. We learned so much and looked forward to each days tours. Nuno went out of his way to make sure our seniors especially my father, could access as much of the tour itinerary as possible. He was inclusive of them and their needs as well as making sure we still got to see such special places. If we couldn’t get out and walk an area due to our groups physical limitations, he made sure we still saw everything as close as he could get us in our vehicle. Nuno was particularly great with my parents and aunt. Always mindful of their needs and always lending a hand to make sure everyone was able to enjoy his tours safely and at a pace that was manageable. We never felt rushed. All of our lunches were included as well as afternoon stops for local pastries and beverages. It was nice to not have to be concerned about any of the extras. The food was plentiful, traditional and delicious. We got to know Nuno through our wonderful mealtime conversations and we were sad to part ways. He gave us an experience we will never forget and his special care for what this trip meant for all of us but especially for my father we will be forever thankful for. Pascal checked in with us daily and personally made sure our seniors made it safely back to the airport for our next flight. That is the personal care we received and it really made a difference in our trip. If we ever are able to travel to Portugal again someday we would not hesitate to book with Yourtours again. Both TripAdvisor and Viator have subsequently stepped up where Your Tours did not. It is designed to be a detailed description of the actual tour that we experienced. We have done several private tours through Viator and all of them have been fantastic. Since it's private, the guides would recommend things to do and see and we could choose which ones worked for our group. This particular tour was not like that at all. It started off bad when the guide said their van broke down last night and they had to get one from another company, which included having to use the other company's driver. The six of us specifically heard the guide say "the other van collapsed." So we had to stuff 6 grown adults in the back of a van for a very long trip while the driver and guide were up front. Afterwards, we did learn that the guide told his boss that there was no replacement van so he either misled his boss, or us. I'll let the reader decide. The guide did offer me the front seat at the beginning but what father would put a stranger in the back with his family? Your Tours Portugal should have notified me the night before and gave me a choice to cancel the trip but they didn't. We hoped for the best and got in. The first stop at a winery started out ok but we were surprised that there was another group of 6 people at the table. So much for a private tour. The owner gave a nice overview and provided some bread crumbs and olive oil to snack on while he poured 2 wines and 2 ports. The first wine was a decent pour and each successive glass was smaller and smaller. We were there for about 20 minutes and he then said it was over as he had another group ready to come in. The next 40 minutes was spent waiting in line for the bathroom, waiting in line to purchase something, and waiting for a different van driver to move his vehicle so we could get out. No tour of the winery or cellars provided. Since the "Provider Photos" and "Traveler Photos" all show pictures of being in the cellars with barrels we assumed that would be coming up on our next winery visit. Many Traveler Photos and comments mentioned stopping at 2-3 wineries during the trip. Afterwards, Your Tours said that they do not represent that the pictures relate to this specific tour. Would have been nice to know that up front. Unfortunately, that next winery visit never happened.... The next stop was supposed to be the "relaxing" boat trip on the Douro river. All the Provider Photos and Traveler Photos show a small boat on the river and, since we were on a private tour, assumed that is what we would be on. The description does say that the boat is not private but certainly expected a more intimate setting. While they had those smaller boats there, we got put on a very large boat that held over 100 people. It was not the more private, relaxing journey we anticipated. Total waste of time. On the way out we wanted to make a 5 minute stop at a souvenir store that was right by the dock. Our guide would not stop and instead told us there would be nothing to see in there and wait until we were back in Porto to go out on our own. That's not his decision to make on a "private" tour. Next stop was for lunch. Surely we would be visiting another winery and having lunch outside with wine pairings, etc. Even the full description of the tour on the site stated "...have a true wine lunch where every element of the meal is paired with different DOC Douro wines, from the appetizers to the cafe in the end." Both the Provider and Traveler photos showed tables set up outside at a winery with several wine glasses ready to be filled, etc. One traveler commented that lunch was fantastic and was at a Michelin restaurant. We ended up inside at a small restaurant, in a very small town, with a concrete floor and particle board walls. Choice of food was pork or fish with bones and a frozen desert. Obviously not a winery lunch environment nor the experience we were led to believe. Clearly, Your Tours is squeezing every penny out of our dollars instead of providing a special winery lunch experience. Next stop was at an old manor house which was interesting to see. Then led out back where many tables were under some big trees. Some filled with people drinking wine and eating what looked like a very nice lunch. Not sure why we at least didn't have lunch there. Instead, we were led to a table, given a glass of something to drink, no explanation, no discussion of wines. No one ever came back to the table so we left. Again, not what the provider led us to believe. Last stop was at a lookout point on the way home to take some pictures. Our guide said we have "two minutes" and to come back. You've got to be kidding me..... After piling back into the van the guide said "we could now take a nap" as we headed back to Porto. We then had to suffer through 90 minutes of our guide and driver talking to each other in Portuguese while they played David Bowie's greatest hits through the speakers. You can't make this stuff up! Finally, this trip cost about $1,200 for the six of us and it was our son's birthday. We were all really looking forward to the Douro Valley Wine trip and just could not be more disappointed. We definitely got to see the Douro Valley, which was cool, but Your Tours Portugal really left out the whole "wine" part of trip. Even as I'm writing this I still can't believe it. Start your road trip in the vibrant city of Porto , where you can rent a car or hire a local driver. From here you can drive to Braga in around 45 minutes.

Food Trails: Where to eat in Porto

Located in the heart of the Vinho Verde region, it is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, built more than 2,000 years ago, and it is a great central point for discovering the region.

While still in the city, Braga Cathedral and the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte are places not to miss. From Braga you can easily take day trips around the region to visit each of Vinho Verde’s nine sub-regions.

Start your first day by heading to Penafiel for a visit to the region’s largest winery Quinta da  Aveleda . The new tasting room, and surrounding parks and gardens with their rare species of trees, are worth the trip alone.

Many of the local restaurants serve the popular arroz de sarrabulho (meat and rice cooked in red wine and pig’s blood) and rojões à moda do Minho (marinated and stewed pork with pig’s blood). Definitely not for the fainthearted, but an authentic local experience, especially when paired with a red Vinho Verde – still served traditionally in a ceramic bowl.

Dipping bread in your food is also highly encouraged during meals around the region.

Only 15 minutes away, Quinta do Ameal is an organic winery and country guest house producing ageworthy Loureiro wines which have been responsible for putting this high-quality white variety on the map.

Galician whites: Panel tasting results

Nearby, Aphros Wine is the only biodynamic producer in the region, applying holistic principles and ancient techniques – such as long skin fermentation – to make its surprisingly energetic wines.

From Penafiel you can drive north for one hour to the town of Ponte de Lima for lunch with a view of the famous part-medieval, part-Roman bridge.

One hour north, in the direction of the Spanish border, you’ll get to Monção e Melgaço , the northernmost sub-region of Vinho Verde, and home to the fine Alvarinho variety.

More protected from maritime influence than other sub-regions, thanks to the surrounding hills, the combination of grape and climate creates richer, fuller, subtly complex wines.

Lisbon: Top restaurants and wine bars

In Melgaço, Quinta de Soalheiro is an innovator with Alvarinho and leads the region with some of the best examples of fresh, focused and ageworthy whites, including organic and natural versions of Alvarinho.

Also in Melgaço, star winemaker Anselmo Mendes has been experimenting with Alvarinho for over 20 years and is now highly regarded as one of the best in Portugal.

In Monção, the local cooperative Adega de Monção makes some of the most popular regional wines, and is currently working with indigenous yeasts and lees ageing in a bid to improve its Deu-La-Deu range.

Many local restaurants here carry wines from several different producers, so visiting them is an opportunity to try a diverse range of Alvarinho.

Moscow Metro 2019

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

On every station there is cashier and machines (you can switch it to English). Cards and cash are accepted. 1 trip - 55 RUB 2 trips - 110 RUB

Tickets for 60 trips and day passes are available only at the cashier's.

60 rides - 1900 RUB

1 day - 230 RUB 3 days - 438 RUB 30 days - 2170 RUB.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

One turnstile at every station accept PayPass and payments with phones. It has a sticker with the logos and located next to the security's cabin.

GETTING ORIENTED

At the platfrom you will see one of these signs.

It indicates the line you are at now (line 6), shows the direction train run and the final stations. Numbers below there are of those lines you can change from this line.

In trains, stations are announced in Russian and English. In newer trains there are also visual indication of there you are on the line.

To change lines look for these signs. This one shows the way to line 2.

There are also signs on the platfrom. They will help you to havigate yourself. (To the lines 3 and 5 in this case).

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.
