Wisconsin Dells Tourist Traps

Many people consider the Wisconsin Dells as one giant tourist trap and say that’s part of the appeal. However, you want to spend your money on the fun stuff and not get snared into the traps that waste time or money during your trip.

Don’t Pay Full Price

Many places at The Dells will advertise “today only” but those prices are just the regular prices. Also, all the local places give out coupons for other attractions, so you can usually find some discounts this way. There are also ticket vendors that give you a percent off for going to multiple attractions.

Top Secret – The Secret Is Its Lame

You’re sucked in by advertising stating “it’s classified.” The Top Secret Attraction Special is an upside replica of the White House and is designed like a fun-house but aimed at making fun of U.S. politics. There are a few upside down rooms, a confusing dig site, some labeled boxes and Bigfoot in a cage. Nothing really interesting or special for the price you pay for admission.

The Fun Stuff

As a general “tourist trap” at Wisconsin Dells you’ll see the standard wax museums, gift shops and Ripley’s Believe it or Not. However, they do point out all the fun stuff there is to do too. A few things to check out that they say are worthwhile are:

  • Tommy Bartlett Thrill Show
  • Robot World
  • Noah’s Ark Waterpark
  • Mount Olympus

These are family-friendly places with something for everyone. But if you really don’t want to stay in the “touristy” areas, fun alternatives are Mirror Lake State Park and Devil’s Lake State Park for great outdoor recreation and scenery, including canoeing.

Because life's too short to stay home …, 10 tourist traps to love, these roadside attractions dole out equal portions of schlock and awe..

Downtown Wisconsin Dells.

© Beth Gauper

Americans have a love-hate relationship with their tourist traps. They're so uncool . . . but so irresistible.

What makes something a tourist trap? It's a place that's so cheesy you have to see if it's really as cheesy as it looks. A place so iconic you've seen a million pictures of it. A place plugged by thousands of highway billboards.

Mostly, it's a place everyone else has seen — so you have to, too. We can't help ourselves, especially when it comes to anything that's odd or oversized.

And why not? Few tourist traps have no redeeming qualities at all, and most actually are pretty cool — or so you'll think afterward, once the headache fades (I'm talking about you, House on the Rock).

Here are 10 tourists traps that might make you roll your eyes but still are worth a visit.

Wisconsin Dells

So you're standing under the tail of the plane sticking out of Ripley's Believe It or Not, staring at the billboards all around you: Gentlemen's Club. Torture Museum. Dells Bells Wedding Chapel.

Las Vegas? No, this is the town that TripAdvisor has named Best Destination in the U.S. for Families.

Families that don't mind constant over-stimulation, apparently. There's also a 60-foot Trojan horse, an upside-down White House, a Castle of Terror and, of course, a lot of roller coasters and water slides.

Roadside America, the bible of tourist traps, calls it "one of America's most over-the-top tourism meccas," and it certainly is.

Why you have to go: Your kids will make you.

What if you don't want to? Skip the Vegas-like strip and concentrate on the quiet side of the Dells , preferably after Labor Day and before Memorial Day. Along the river, the Dells are just as beautiful as they were when photographer H.H. Bennett made them famous.

Creepy clowns at House on the Rock.

House on the Rock

Perched on a limestone spire overlooking the Wisconsin River Valley and Frank Lloyd Wright's beloved Taliesen, this rambling complex near Spring Green is full of stuff, some museum-quality and some flea market-quality.

House on the Rock is like a train wreck — looking won't make you feel good, but it's impossible to turn away. If you want to see everything, it's a 2½-mile walk from the original "Japanese house" and Infinity Room to the Doll Carousel Room, and you'll be accompanied the whole way by tinny music from dozens of vaguely sinister mechanical orchestras.

You'll be exhausted, but you'll also be amazed. And you'll be asking one question: Why?

Why you have to go: 1) Because dozens of highway signs say you do. 2) Once you've seen it, you don't have to go again.

Millennium Park may be tourists' favorite milling-around spot now, but Navy Pier became Chicago's No. 1 tourist attraction after it was reopened in 1995, and it keeps adding ingenious new ways to separate tourists from their cash.

Outside, there's a Ferris wheel, musical carousel, wave swinger and various thrill rides.

Much of the inside is lined with souvenir shops and snack stands. Don't go there, if you have children who beg.

Why you have to go: There's a lot of free stuff to see and hear, too — pirate shows by the resident Navy Pier Buccaneers, marching bands, beer-garden concerts, a stained-glass museum, Wednesday and Saturday fireworks. Just keep a good grip on your wallet.

Mall of America

There's literally no bigger tourist trap than this vast mall in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, with 4.2 million square feet of stores, restaurants and attractions.

It's the No. 1 tourism attraction in Minnesota — those 10,000 lakes aren't even in the running.

The attractions include Nickelodeon Universe, the nation's largest indoor family theme park — you do love SpongeBob SquarePants, don't you? — which offers more than 30 rides, including the Dutchman's Deck adventure high-ropes course.

There's also the 1.2 million-gallon Sea Life Minnesota aquarium, FlyOver America flight simulation ride and an 18-hole miniature golf course.

And then there's that other attraction — no tax on clothing.

Why you have to go: Because everyone back home will think there's something wrong with you if you don't.

Paul Bunyan

Bemidji's famous Paul Bunyan and Babe.

In Minnesota, no one leaves Bemidji without getting a picture taken with Paul Bunyan.

This 18-foot, plaid-shirted lumberjack began the mania for oversized town mascots when local Rotarians built him to attract people to the town's Winter Carnival in 1937.

Paul and his blue ox Babe were a hit, landing on the pages of Life magazine and the New York Times. In 1938, Bemidji's Winter Carnival drew 100,000 people to the town of 7,200, and now Paul and Babe are considered the height of Americana, appearing in coffee-table books the world over.

There's also a giant Paul in nearly Akeley, his hand extended so kids can climb on. Seven miles east of Brainerd, a 27-foot Paul Bunyan at Bunyanland theme park can talk. And Paul Bunyan's wife, a buxom 17-footer, lives in Hackensack.

Why you have to go: You haven't really been to Minnesota unless you've snapped a picture of a giant Bunyan. (In a pinch, though, snap one of the many other giants in the region.)

Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum

Big muskie in Hayward.

This complex in the northern Wisconsin town of Hayward includes 300 mounted fish, 1,000 antique motors and 50,000 lures, rods, reels and accessories.

But what reels in the tourists is the 4½-story concrete and fiberglass muskellunge, the local trophy fish. It's half a city block long, and its jaws are big enough for 20 people or, occasionally, a wedding party.

Why you have to go: There are a lot of fiberglass fish in the north woods, but this is the biggest.

Niagara Cave

Did you think you'd checked Paul Bunyan off your list? Not so fast. This cave near the Minnesota town of Harmony, one of several near the Iowa border, includes a ledge that guides long called Paul Bunyan's bed.

Tours indulge in less kitsch these days, but guides still point out an Elephant's Head, a three-tier Wedding Cake and the Battleship.

Every cave is as sensational as your imagination — so bring yours stoked to see the most. There's also a 60-foot waterfall, a Cathedral Dome formed by a whirlpool and a 625-foot Grand Canyon Room, not to mention thickets of stalactites.

Why you have to go: It's cool, all right — 48 degrees year-round.

Corn Palace

The Corn Palace.

If you like to look at the seed art at the Minnesota State Fair, you'll love the facade of this 1921 Moorish exposition hall in Mitchell, S.D.

Every year, local grain, grasses and 13 shades of corn are arranged in a mural illustrating a theme.

There are free guided tours, with guides sharing "a-maize-ing" facts about how the murals are created. Stay for a rodeo, car show, tractor pull or polka festival inside.

Why you have to go: The drive to the Black Hills would be really boring if you didn't.

Mackinac Island

This island in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron is more fudgy than cheesy. As soon as tourists step off the boat, they're assailed by aromas from a dozen fudge shops as well as aromas from something else that's brown and gooey — manure from the hundreds of horses who pull tourists around in wagons and carriages.

If you don't venture beyond the congested harbor area of this car-free island, you'll think it's nothing but overpriced fudge and T-shirt and bike-rental shops.

Downtown Mackinac Island.

So skip the fudge, rent the bikes and ditch downtown as fast as you can. The island is encircled by a paved, eight-mile bicycle trail, and the wooded interior, which rises like the back of a turtle, is crisscrossed by more trails.

Why you have to go: It's the classiest kind of tourist trap (just watch where you step).

Da Yoopers Tourist Trap & Museum

Tourists with even an ounce of curiosity become tourist-trap roadkill at this roadside attraction in Ishpeming, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Who can resist Big Gus, a 23-foot blue chainsaw (world's largest) that really runs, or Big Ernie, a working rifle (world's largest) mounted on the bed of an antique pickup truck?

Inside the museum, see a 10-foot mosquito and a patented Sno-Cicle, a snow machine with wheels "for the one month we ain't got no snow."

In the tourist trap, you can buy packages of Roadkill Helper and a T-shirt showing a Yooper seven-course meal — a pasty and a six-pack.

Why you have to go: Who doesn't love a good Yooper joke?

Reasons To Avoid The Biggest Tourist Trap In Wisconsin

Let me start by saying as a native Cheesehead who now lives in Iowa I still love my dairyland .  I'm all over it when I can go back to eat some cheese curds and drink some Spotted Cow.

And while the biggest tourist trap in the state isn't awful, there are so many other places that people can enjoy in the great state.

Every State Has Tourist Traps

For some reason certain places just become destinations.  There isn't anything spectacular about these locations.  But, for some, they become things to check off the travel bucket list.  Like the above " bean " in Chicago.  How do 12 million people a year go to this thing?  It's a blob of chrome.  Neat.

Iowa Has Plenty Of Traps As Well

If there is actual baseball being played at the Field of Dreams it can be great.  And they are planning a lot of expansion to make it more of a destination.  But for the most part...it's a baseball field in a cornfield.

However, according to a USA Today survey the Amana Colonies are the biggest tourist trap in the state of Iowa.

Some Of The Biggest Tourist Traps In Wisconsin

Before writing this I wanted to see what else folks were saying about the biggest tourist traps in Wisconsin.  Of course, Wisconsin Dells came up.  If you are going to check out the natural beauty found in only a few places in the world...then you are one of the rare ones.  Because most people know Wisconsin Dells as the "Waterpark Capital of The World".

While some consider The Dells a tourist trap or at least parts of the area, I still find the city to be exactly what you would expect.  The nature, the water parks, the cheesy gift shops, the cheese shops, the themed and overpriced restaurants.  You know what you are getting, but it works.  Just do your research on individual places before you pay the cash to go.

The Tourist Destination For Wisconsinites To Avoid

Lake Geneva is without a doubt the biggest tourist trap in the state of Wisconsin.  A weekend trip here can break the bank and offer you the same things you can get at soooooo many other places in the state of Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest.  Let's go through the reasons to avoid Lake Geneva.

  • Price.   The cost of everything is higher these days.  But in Lake Geneva, everything is more expensive.  Hotels, food, drinks, parking...you even have to pay to get on the beach!  $10 per person to sit on a not-very-nice beach that you can find in so many other places in Wisconsin.  I even ended up getting bug bites from the sand on the beach.
  • Houses.   Other than the actual lake, the highlight of the area is the houses on the lake.  Houses that the majority of us could never even dream of owning.  But people pack onto a pricey boat tour to look at all of them.  "Oh here's one for sale at $28 Million".  Maybe save the $55 per person on the boat ticket, and invest in a penny stock that could hit big so your grandchildren can someday live in the boat house next to the mansion of old money.
  • Drunk A-Holes On Boats.   The lake is super deep so boaters don't have to worry about running into a sandbar and destroying their boat.  Which is good for them cause the majority are hammered flying around the lake.
  • Crowded.   Beach - crowded.  Restaurants - crowded.  Streets - crowded.  Boat tours - crowded.  Parking - crowded.  Traffic...yeah, you get the point.  Weekends have a lot of people in a little area.
  • Rude People.   What happens when you get people with "too much money" in a crowded place where they just come for the weekend?  Well, you get Chicago snobs.  At one restaurant we even moved tables because of a group of "young ladies" who were being super rude and cursing around my child.

And that is the biggest reason to avoid the number one tourist trap in Wisconsin...because it's made for people from Chicago.  And it feels like the majority of Wisconsinites already know this.  Because when looking at all the cars on the crowded streets, about 90% of them had Illinois license plates.  So let Chicago spend their money in Lake Geneva.  The real Cheeseheads know there are hundreds of lakes they can enjoy without having to deal with Cubs and Bears fans.

WISCONSIN DELLS

The 10 best things to do in Wisconsin Dells

This city may have more water parks than anywhere else, but make sure to check out other things to do in Wisconsin Dells

Tourists have been coming to Wisconsin Dells since the 1800s, and it’s no surprise as the city contains the very best of what makes Wisconsin great. The spectacular sandstone landscapes along the Wisconsin River are a prime example of the state’s natural beauty, the fudge will keep you coming back for more, and the quirkier attractions will introduce you to the state’s light-hearted side. On the surface ‘the Dells’ may seem like one big tourist trap, but if you fully embrace the city’s cheesy side, the water park capital of the world won’t disappoint.

Things to do in Wisconsin Dells

It may be the “Water park Capital of the World,” but there are more things to do in Wisconsin Dells than water slides, go-karts, and mini golf. Sure, the Dells is best known as one of the top family vacation destinations in the country, but it’s also loaded with kitsch weirdness, haunted history, and unique attractions that might have a few real ghosts of their own. Where else can you have a drink in a haunted saloon, explore the history of torture devices, meet the real dissected head of a German serial killer, and then take a spooky boat tour into the dark canyons of the Upper Dells at night?

Wisconsin dells faq, what is wisconsin dells most known for.

The Dells was once just a small lumber town along the Wisconsin River called Kilbourn City. It didn’t become the popular tourist destination it is today until pioneering photographer H.H. Bennett put Wisconsin Dells on the map in the latter half of the 19th century with his unique landscape photography such as the famous photo of his son leaping across Stand Rock. Today, the area is known for it’s water parks and resorts, including Noah’s Ark , Kalahari , Mt. Olympus , Wilderness Resort , and Great Wolf Lodge . Some of the more unique attractions that brings visitors to the area are the Original Wisconsin Ducks boat tours, and the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory . You can even visit H.H. Bennett’s 1875 studio and get your own vintage style old time photo souvenir portrait just like the first visitors did.

Is Wisconsin Dells worth visiting?

If you like fun and/or weird then yes, you absolutely must plan a Wisconsin Dells vacation. From the water slides, wave pools and lazy rivers of the water parks, to the upside down White House known as Top Secret , Timbavati Wildlife Park , Ripley’s Believe It or Not , and Haunted Mansion , there’s a unique attraction for everyone. Not to mention the paddle boat-shaped Mr. Pancake restaurant, live music and night life at the Showboat Saloon , arcades, adventure golf, zip lines, and the immersive gaming experience of Wizard Quest . You can even get married at the Dell’s Bells Wedding Chapel .

What is there to do in Wisconsin Dells besides water parks?

Water slides aren’t for everyone, especially if you’re looking for things to do in Wisconsin Dells for adults. Chula Vista Resort is a great relaxation getaway for couples and groups. Boat tours offer unique and majestic views of the Wisconsin River that you won’t see any other way. Lost Canyon tours take you by horse-drawn carriage through the rocky gorges and narrow passages that made the Dells famous. You can take a trolley tour through haunted history, or do it the pub crawl way with both kinds of spirits (you know, alcohol and dead people).

What are the best days to go to Wisconsin Dells?

The best time to go to Wisconsin Dells and make the most of your stay is during the summer months – June, July, and August , as it will be warm enough to enjoy the water slides and other outdoor activities. June still tends to be a little cooler, so you may find deals to save on waterpark tickets during that time.

The Wo-Zha-Wa Days Fall Festival in September marks the end of the season. After that, many attractions, restaurants, and water parks close for the off season.

Many indoor resorts and attractions remain open throughout the winter, so if you want a cozy Wisconsin Dells experience without all the crowds, that’s a great time to plan your trip.

How do I spend a day at Wisconsin Dells?

If it’s a Wisconsin Dells day trip you’re looking for, here’s what we suggest for a uniquely Dells adventure:

  • Have a lumberjack breakfast at Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty
  • Play laser tag at Wild Fun Zone (the arcade with a giant King Kong)
  • Pet giant snakes and two-headed turtles at Alligator Alley
  • Get a souvenir t-shirt and old time photo
  • Eat Wisconsin Dells fudge. Don’t fail this one.
  • Have a quick drive-up wedding at Dell’s Bells *BYO-SO
  • Get dinner from an indoor food truck at Grateful Shed
  • Get on the Ghost Boat at dusk for a some spooky fun

Is Wisconsin Dells a tourist trap?

The definition of a tourist trap is a place created for the purpose of attracting tourists. Based on that description, yes, you could definitely consider the Dells a tourist trap. And it’s been that way a very long time. But it’s the kind of trap where you have a great time with unique adventures you won’t soon forget. And yes, it can be costly, but there are ways to save money at Wisconsin Dells .

Is parking free at Wisconsin Dells?

Many smaller Wisconsin Dells attractions offer free parking. If you’re staying at a particular resort, you likely will also get free parking. If you’re just spending the day at a water park, there will likely be an additional parking fee. Also, parking in the downtown area is metered, so if you plan to spend time wandering around the unique shops and attractions on the main strip, be prepared to pay hourly parking rates.

Do you have to wear a swimsuit in Wisconsin Dells?

Look, nude water parks should definitely be a thing. If you want to go careening down water slides in your birthday suit, more power to you. You won’t find those in Wisconsin Dells, though, so yes, you will have to wear a swimsuit in Wisconsin Dells while in public areas. What you do in your private hotel room hot tub, however, is up to you.

The Best Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells

wisconsin dells tourist trap

The Dells are located in southern central Wisconsin ( map ). The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacial-formed gorge that features Cambrian sandstone formations. The Dells are well known in Wisconsin as a summertime playground of waterparks, hotels, restaurants, and creative amusements. Visitors will quickly learn there is no shortage of things to do in Wisconsin Dells.

The Dells are a town of less than 20 square miles with a resident population of about 6,500. Despite the small town atmosphere, visitors dropped $1.3B last year on room, food, retail, and recreation, etc.. In the state of Wisconsin, the Dells are kind of a big deal.

Alex Jordan was a college grad struggling to find motivation. He bought a piece of property with a rocky hill on it and built a residence at the highest point. In 1959, folks in the community took notice, and a short while later he was giving $0.25 tours. By the 1970’s, Jordan was clearing $100K monthly and investing every dime back into ever-growing cathedral. House on the Rock is a  one-of-a-kind museum  with collections and creations that blow the mind.

2. Noah’s Ark

Noah’s Ark is the largest waterpark in the USA. The park features two wave pools, a fantastic water coaster (Black Anaconda), two lazy rivers, an assortment of water thrill rides (Scorpions Tail, Time Warp), and countless waterslides. Imagine the best waterpark you’ve ever witnessed and add about 20% more rides. That’s Noah’s Ark. We recommend buying tickets online to avoid the gouging at the gate.

Few, if any, architects have reached the level of renown achieved by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He designed more than 1,000 homes, offices, and other structures over the course of his 70-year career. His most notable works are: Falling Water, the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, the Marin County Civic Center, and his Taliesin and Taliesin West residences. Taliesin, his childhood home-turned-architect school, is located in Spring Green, WI.

On August 4, 1939, workers from a limestone quarry blasted into the underground caverns. Cave of the Mounds is less than 50′ deep and 1/3 of a mile long, which means it doesn’t take long to see it. What makes this one of the best things to do in Wisconsin Dells is there are no barriers separating you from the ornamental features of the cave. Get as close as you like to the stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, and cave bacon — very few caves allow this.

The town of Wisconsin Dells is a tourist trap. The litmus test? They have a Ripley’s Believe it or Not. They also have ghost tours, escape rooms, axe throwing, mediocre science museums, and enough cheesy restaurants to fill Witch’s Gorge. In addition to these schleppy excursions the town has is a lovely walk along the river that gives a preview of the Dells Boat Tour. An Honest Conclusion for Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells

House on the Rock

Wisconsin Dells is one of those towns where tourists are targeted as wallets in need of a lightening. These types of places can be shameful — they provide modicum of merry good times in the moment, but the drive home is filled with resentment. It really is an abusive relationship between a tourist trap and the touring fodder. At best it is good enough.

We never felt ashamed of ourselves in the Dells. The hustle stopped short of insult — the businesses knew where to draw the line. In spite of the schleppy nature of the town, the strip is home to a few noteworthy things. Honestly, the best attractions are found in the surrounding areas.

Wisconsin Dells offers thrilling water parks, unique museums and even a deer park.

Located about 55 miles north of Madison , the city of Wisconsin Dells is known as the "Waterpark Capital of the World," but visitors will find a bevy of other attractions to occupy their time, from boat tours of the scenic Wisconsin River to historical landmarks and museums. The term "dells" is derived from the name that 18th-century French explorers gave the area on the earliest maps; it refers to the unique gorges with rock formations sculpted by glacial meltwater that can only be found in a handful of places in the world – one of which is along the Wisconsin River.

A bustling downtown district – lined with independently owned shops, restaurants, motels and ice cream shops near the riverfront – is surrounded by a lush, rugged countryside that first caught the eye of tourists in the late 1800s. The city today still thrives on a burgeoning tourism industry. With a little something to pique the interest of everyone in the family, from thrill-seekers to nature lovers and everything in between, Wisconsin Dells is every bit as endearing as it is entertaining. This guide offers just a taste of the top things to do in one of the Badger State's most memorable vacation destinations.

Dells Scenic River Walk

A riverfront stroll along this quarter-mile paved walkway in the downtown district is a must-do for a glimpse of the stunning sandstone bluffs that give Wisconsin Dells its name. The Dells Scenic River Walk is free and open year-round. Visitors recommend coming here to take family photos, thanks to the lovely scenery. Although the path is short, it features several benches, game tables and interpretive signs explaining tidbits about the area's history, culture and geology to entertain you along the way. During the winter holiday season a massive tree adorned with strands of lights charms travelers; accompanying the Tree of Light are 70 additional holiday trees lining the trail.

This is also a nice place to watch the tour boats drift by on the river while you enjoy an ice cream cone. You could also grab a burger or beverage at the River Walk Pub, located at the south end of the trail, which offers an outdoor beer garden patio. Continue your river-themed experience at The Vue, a boutique hotel boasting waterfront views from the rooms, hot tub, outdoor deck and new boat dock.

Downtown Wisconsin Dells

Beyond the river walk, downtown Wisconsin Dells is a destination for shops, restaurants, arcades and museums. The Original Wisconsin Ducks tours begin here and families may want to check out Wizard Quest, where kids and adults can battle the wizard and dragon in a series of competitions. You can grab some fudge at Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge or find a sweet treat at Goody Goody Gumdrop, offering more than 1,000 different kinds of candy. What's more, this downtown area boasts the world's only root beer museum, an old-fashioned portrait shop, breweries, bowling at the Chalet Lanes & Lounge, ax throwing and a wedding chapel.

Great Wolf Lodge Water Park

The main attraction at the flagship location of this popular wilderness-themed resort is the 76,000-square-foot indoor water park, which operates at a balmy 84 degrees year-round. The massive aquatic complex houses colorful waterslides, heated swimming pools, a wave pool, hot tubs (including one for adults only), a lazy river and much more. Here you'll find one of the top-rated waterslides in Wisconsin Dells: The Howlin' Tornado, the world's first enclosed ride of its kind, drops groups of daring souls 53 feet and swirls them around a giant funnel. When it gets warm enough, Great Wolf Lodge opens the Raccoon Lagoon outdoor water playground for kids, surrounded by sun loungers.

An overnight stay at the 436-room lodge includes complimentary access to the water park. Other on-site activities at this Great Wolf Lodge location include a live-action MagiQuest experience, Build-A-Bear Workshop and arcade games, for which additional fees apply. Travelers call this resort a great place for younger kids but say the rides can be on the small side for teenagers.

Step into the historic studio of Henry Hamilton Bennett, a photographer who helped put Wisconsin Dells on the map for tourists with his landscape images promoting the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Built in 1875, his storefront and studio – the oldest operating business in town – are now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society, allowing visitors to take a step back in time and learn about Bennett's life and photography. Historical exhibits also span the Indigenous people of the Ho-Chunk Nation who once lived where the H.H. Bennett Studio stands and the area's development into one of the first tourist destinations. The museum houses artifacts such as cameras and other equipment, as well as original photography from Bennett, including his iconic stop-action shot of his son jumping between two towering rock formations in 1886.

Although visitors say this attraction is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the region, making it one of the top things to do in Wisconsin Dells for adults, some caution it might not hold as much interest for young kids. Patrons who want a unique souvenir can sign up to have an old-fashioned tintype portrait "struck" using the wet plate method of Bennett's time. Note that the H.H. Bennett Studio is a seasonal attraction, typically open from late May through the end of October and closed for the offseason. For accommodations nearby, the White Rose Hotel offers Victorian charm just two blocks from the museum.

Palace Theater

Exterior of the Palace Theater in the evening.

Some visitors claim there isn't a bad seat in the house at this state-of-the-art dinner theater that provides one of the top evening entertainment options in the area. Owners Anthony and Joseph Tamaska have more than 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry, including producing one of Chicago's most successful interactive shows, "Tony n' Tina's Wedding." They chose Wisconsin Dells as their latest theater endeavor after spending memorable summers there during childhood. The facility hosts a range of musical tributes (think Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac and Dolly Parton), comedians and musicals that promise fun for the whole family, especially if you catch a show amid the winter holiday season. Those who purchase the "Dinner & Show" admission will be served a three-course meal prior to showtime, though some recent patrons felt the food was subpar; tickets for the show only are also available. Stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Wisconsin Dells, only a mile away from Palace Theater, for a 10% discount on tickets.

What started in the mid-20th century as a water-ski show on Lake Delton is now a hands-on science center boasting more than 175 exhibits to pique the curiosity of visitors young and old. This iconic institution has several main attractions, from the Giant Lever, designed to enable patrons of any size to lift a 5,000-pound vehicle, to the High Wire SkyCycle, a circus-style bike ride across a tightrope. The museum is also home to an authentic Russian space station core module – one of just three ever made, though not the one in orbit from 1986 to 2001 – which guests can walk through to experience a day in space life. While travelers agree the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory is a fun place for all ages to spend a few hours, some admit the facility feels a little outdated. The museum is open year-round, but hours fluctuate seasonally, and the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Wisconsin Dells is conveniently located across the street.

Cascade Mountain

Open November through March for winter activities like downhill skiing and snow tubing, this family-friendly resort is located about 20 miles southeast of Wisconsin Dells. A visit to Cascade Mountain, considered one of the country's best small ski areas, is a top thing to do during the colder months. Lift tickets for children 12 and younger are free with the purchase of an adult pass, and lesson options range from personalized instruction for the whole family to a group lesson just for kids, giving adults a couple hours to ski on their own.

Guests are impressed by the quality and variety of runs at this small ski hill, where almost a dozen chair lifts offer access to 48 trails for all skill levels, as well as terrain parks to get your adrenaline pumping. Visitors say everyone will also get a kick out of zooming down the snow tubing hills or taking advantage of the opportunity for night skiing during extended hours on holidays. Cascade has six food and drink locations, but travelers warn the items can be limited and pricey. For a quick commute to first chair, the Days Inn by Wyndham Portage hotel is just 4 miles south of the resort.

More than 50 waterslides as well as pools and playgrounds make up this sprawling aquatic complex, situated on 70 acres near the shores of Lake Delton, less than 3 miles south of downtown Dells. Original Wisconsin Ducks

Boat driving through a forest.

This classic tour operator has been guiding folks around some of the top sightseeing spots in the Dells since 1946 in unique all-terrain vehicles. This type of amphibious six-wheeled truck was first invented during World War II with the code name "DUKW" – later simplified to "duck" – to transport troops and supplies by both land and sea. Today duck boats make for a great tourist outing, especially on a trip to Wisconsin Dells.

During the one-hour tour with Original Wisconsin Ducks, guests will be shuttled along an exclusive network of trails through a forest of ferns, down the Wisconsin River, up Dell Creek and over a dam into Lake Delton. Along the way the drivers – who travelers consistently commend for being funny, friendly and knowledgeable – point out numerous notable landmarks such as Pulpit Rock, an impressive sandstone formation, and Dawn Manor, a historic Civil War-era house. The season for duck tours typically runs from mid-March through mid-November. The Hilton Garden Inn Wisconsin Dells, located next to the popular restaurant The Del-Bar, is about a mile south of the tour office.

This outpost of the Ripley's franchise empire – which started in 1918 as a newspaper cartoon – is a self-described "odditorium" with three floors of exhibits and illusions to challenge the imagination. Throughout the dimly lit facility (which travelers warn may not be fully accessible for wheelchairs or strollers), patrons are posed with a variety of scenarios and objects designed to make you question whether things really are as they seem. Keep your eyes peeled for the hidden rooms and buttons in disguise that, when pressed, reveal more oddities along the route through the 11 galleries. As one of more than 100 Ripley's attractions around the world, this eclectic funhouse is one of the most unique indoor attractions in Wisconsin Dells.

Adults may want to lounge and mingle at the Mud Hut Swim-Up Bar or the numerous hot tubs and spas tucked throughout the complex. The outdoor water park, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, offers even more slides and recreation such as a water tree fort. Guests can observe and interact with more than 75 species, from African lions and penguins to Bengal tigers and red pandas. Timbavati Wildlife Park recommends allowing three to five hours to thoroughly explore everything it has to offer, including the Safari Train Ride, which passes through sprawling meadows with rhinos, ostriches and antelope. Another traveler favorite is visiting the on-site nursery, where guests can watch park staff care for a variety of baby animals.

To avoid ticket fees, you may opt for a stay at hotel partners such as the Natura Treescape Resort and The Vue to get free admission. Keep in mind that the train rides cost extra on top of park admission, although combination deals are also available. For a behind-the-scenes experience with the animals at Timbavati, up to five people can participate in a 1.5-hour private guided tour, as long as you schedule it in advance.

Dells Boat Tours

This long-running tour operator manages a fleet of 17 steel ferries that parade visitors up and down the Wisconsin River, giving them an up-close view of the unique rock formations. The tours run from mid-April to early November and consist of two main options, whether you want to see the scenic views of the Upper Dells (the area above the Kilbourn Dam) or landmarks of the Lower Dells (below the dam). The two-hour Upper Dells tour offers entry into Witches Gulch, a visitor-favorite narrow canyon hike only accessible by boat, as well as Stand Rock, where you can see a trained dog make the cliff leap from H.H. Bennett's famous photo. The Lower Dells tour, which lasts about an hour, delves into the history of the river, including stories about the area's Indigenous inhabitants, while you float alongside picturesque cliffs. If you visit between late May and mid-September, you can also choose to embark on a romantic Sunset Dinner Cruise, featuring an open bar and live music, as well as a stroll through Witches Gulch.

Witches Gulch

Pathway through hidden Witches Gulch.

Taking a boat tour is the only way to access this popular natural attraction, which is tucked into a narrow slot canyon on the Wisconsin River. According to a Native American origin myth, while the river bed was formed by a giant serpent, this gorge was carved by a smaller serpent fleeing its path. Local legend states that in the 1800s the photographer H.H. Bennett named Witches Gulch, perhaps due to the curious rock formations or the eerie fog that collects in the crevasse; he also built a walkway for tourists at this spot. Today a 2-mile loop trail zig-zags on a wooden boardwalk through the canyon, which is so narrow you can touch both walls at once in certain spots. This short, scenic walk takes you along steep sandstone walls covered in moss through a heavily wooded area, where towering trees seem to grow right out of the rock. Despite the spooky name, visitors say the trail is easy and peaceful with beautiful views of the river. The Ghost Boat offers a "haunted" tour of the canyon after dark to reveal spooky stories about the area – but note it's not recommended for young children.

Chula Vista Resort

This comprehensive family-friendly resort spans more than 200,000 square feet, showcasing both indoor and outdoor waterslides and rides near the banks of the Wisconsin River's Upper Dells region. Guests say the water parks at Chula Vista Resort can keep kids of all ages entertained, with plenty of activity options for everyone from toddlers to teenagers. Open year-round, the Lost Rios indoor water park features kiddie play areas and slides, a lazy river, and rapid races for older kids to challenge their friends over and over again, all outfitted with jungle decor for a truly tropical atmosphere. In the summertime, guests will discover even more thrilling activities at the outdoor Adventure Lagoon, including a wave pool and plummeting 80-foot drops. Visitors can purchase day passes to access the facility on weekends or get complimentary entry any day of the week by booking a stay at the accompanying hotel, though some past patrons say the Chula Vista rooms could use updating.

This mega-resort set on 600 acres flaunts a mind-boggling multitude of aquatic attractions to explore. Wilderness Resort's wide variety of indoor and outdoor water parks are all only accessible to overnight guests of the on-site lodging properties. Visitors can enjoy the massive indoor wave pool at the Wild WaterDome, whose glass ceiling provides ample natural light for sunbathing. An enclosed skywalk offers a shortcut for dripping guests to move into the Klondike Kavern park, where they'll find a 400-foot lazy river, a family raft ride called The Hurricane and the Claim Jumper Challenge, a unique combination of waterslide and video game. Those are just some of the many water park offerings, though the outdoor attractions are only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Areas geared toward adults are also available at the parks, with amenities like a swim-up cocktail bar or indoor-outdoor hot tub. Landlubbers won't be bored, either, thanks to plenty of other activities to choose from: laser tag, a zip line, mini golf, go karts, escape rooms and much, much more. Many visitors return to Wilderness Resort year after year for the variety of activities and quality of service, suggesting at least three days here to soak it all in – or even a full week.

Lake Delton

Looking out on the water of Lake Delton just before sundown.

One of the main geographical features of the Wisconsin Dells region is the 249-acre Lake Delton, which offers tons of outdoor activities like fishing, boating and paddling. The village of Lake Delton has several quaint public parks, and for access to this lake you'll want to head to the Lake Delton Public Beach, a small but scenic part of the southwest shoreline with restrooms and picnic amenities, or the public boat ramp a little more than a mile further south. Near the boat launch is Dells Watersports, where you can rent ski boats, kayaks, WaveRunners, paddleboards and more for a day of fun in the sun. The Priegel Pier for fishing sits on the north end of the lake adjacent to Kaminski Park; lucky anglers will find a variety of fish species under the water's surface, including largemouth bass, walleye and catfish.

Visitors and locals alike also adore this village's Newport Park, located just north of the lake along the Wisconsin River and Dell Creek, for its lovely views and relaxing atmosphere. Newport Park is equipped with picnic tables and shade, as well as its own boat launch and fishing pier, but the undertow in this section of the river can make it dangerous for swimming. Also note that dogs are not allowed in any public parks in the village. Just half a mile from Lake Delton's public beach, Delton Grand Resort & Spa provides an elegant respite overlooking the lake after a long day of recreating.

Dine at Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty

For a classic family-style breakfast, lunch or dinner, Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty is the destination. Granting access to a more serene side of the Dells, this 2,200-acre oasis is known for its natural beauty and quiet surroundings. The park is an outdoors paradise with terrain for year-round activities from skiing and snowshoeing to hunting and hiking. Paddlers flock here to float the cliff-walled waters of the lake, aptly named for its famously calm surface. The park maintains more than 19 miles of hiking trails and 9 miles of mountain biking trails, most of which close to hikers and cyclists in the winter for skiing or maintenance. Visitors recommend the 2-mile Ishnala Trail on the north end of the park for an easy trek that features beautiful views of the lake as you cross the Mirror Lake Gorge via a 150-foot bridge to connect to the Echo Rock Trail.

Also on the northern side of the park is the Mirror Lake Pine Oak Forest, a designated state natural area featuring lush habitat for bird-watching, with species such as the ruffed grouse, pileated woodpecker, barred owl, pine warbler and many others. Tent and RV campsites are available to reserve for an additional fee on top of daily vehicle admission, or you can spend the night at the Seth Peterson Cottage, the first Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure in the world offered for rental occupancy.

Stop here to take a scenic steam train ride through the Wisconsin countryside and along the river on an authentic 15-inch gauge railroad. Located about 2 miles north of downtown Dells, this living museum houses actual features of the original railyard, including a preserved 30-foot turntable and boiler shops from a bygone era. Visitors applaud the friendly volunteers and old-fashioned feel of the experience.

The Riverside and Great Northern Railway is open from May through October, with more limited availability before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. On weekends in the fall, families gather to experience the museum's popular pumpkin trains, on which children get a gourd to take home after their ride. An on-site snack shack sells refreshments, or you can pack a picnic to further enjoy the serene setting before or after your ride. The nearby Sherwood Forest Campground & RV Park offers an equally wholesome experience, with RV sites and cabins for rent, as well as a heated pool and splash pad.

27 Best & Fun Things To Do In Wisconsin Dells (WI)

By: Author Jerric Chong

fun things to do in Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, named after the Dells of the Wisconsin River, is a city in the southern-central portion of the state of Wisconsin.

As a tourist destination, it is often referred to as The Dells and is immensely popular for its rocky bluffs of sandstone.

The area was formed after the glacial lake of Wisconsin broke through, creating gorgeous scenery in the process.

Originally, Wisconsin Dells was known as Kilbourn City, named after the president of the railroad company whose trains ran to the Dells area.

That name didn’t stick, of course, due to how commonly people preferred to simply call the city The Dells!

Now, the location is most known for its wealth of resorts and waterparks, catering to a high number of vacationing tourists every year, but there’s plenty of other stuff to do outside of those attractions.

Here are our picks for the 27 best and fun things to do in Wisconsin Dells.

Table of Contents

1. Wilderness Resort

Wilderness Resort

Wilderness Resort

The Wilderness Resort is the largest waterpark resort in all of America, and it’s no surprise, then, that it’s one of the most-loved Wisconsin Dells attractions, too.

A sprawling resort complete with a total of eight waterparks – four indoors and four outdoors – it is exclusively reserved for guests, so you’ll have to stay at the resort this weekend if you want access to its awesome activities!

Here are the indoor waterparks you can explore at the resort.

The Klondike Kavern Indoor Waterpark boasts a kid-friendly dumping bucket, body slides, a 400-foot Lazy River, and a significant play structure with slides that mix games and slide boarding.

The waterpark spans 65,000 square feet and is a cavern of sorts.

It connects to the next park, the Wild WaterDome.

The WaterDome measures 70,000 square feet in total and contains America’s biggest wave pool, capable of creating five-foot waves.

The indoor space earned its name from its dome-shaped skylight and is suitable for all ages, even boasting rentable cabanas and a swim-up bar just for adults.

The Wild West Waterpark is another indoor waterpark similarly measuring 70,000 square feet in area.

It’s packed with thrill rides, like the famous Black Hole, as well as bumper boats, play structures, water slides, and body slides.

The final indoor waterpark is Cubby’s Cove, which is a small area that you can drive to from the resort’s main area and is a bit of a hidden gem!

Outdoor waterparks at Wilderness Resort aren’t as famously visited, but that doesn’t mean they’re less enjoyable!

Lake Wilderness, Cubby’s Outdoor, New Frontier, and Lost World are incredible options packed with rides, thrills, and all the waterpark excitement so synonymous with Wisconsin Dells.

Enjoy your stay and explore each one and you’re sure to find a favorite to keep returning to!

The High Rock Cafe is run by a pair of Wisconsin Dells locals who traveled America to learn all about food and dining, and they used that knowledge to open their eatery.

The modern two-story setting offers lovely views of the surrounding area.

Food options vary for lunch and dinner.

You can expect pasta, wraps, and fish tacos at lunch and steak, walleye, salmon Oscar, and chicken and waffles at dinner.

Appetizers range from bruschetta to jumbo crab cakes and from spring rolls to ahi tuna, the dessert menu is decadent, and there are options for kids, vegans, and those eating gluten-free.

Monk’s Bar and Grill is a delightfully homey three-story location that has been running since 1947, opened by a couple, and slowly becoming a tradition of the Wisconsin Dells.

It’s an ideal place to watch Green Bay Packer and Wisconsin Badger games and sells memorabilia related to those teams.

The food is delicious, with options like cheese curds, onion rings, deep-fried pickles, burgers, braided pretzels, salads, and beer-battered fries.

Finally, there’s MACS, the Macaroni, and Cheese Shop .

With an industrial and rustic style, it provides multiple varying adaptations of everyone’s favorite comfort dish (macaroni and cheese).

There are classic flavors as well as choices like Popeye Mac with mushrooms, spinach, and provolone, or the Jalapeno Popper Mac with bacon, pepper jack, and jalapenos, or Mama’s Mac with hot dogs!

The Loaded Baked Potato Mac is as delicious as it sounds, too!

27. Country Bumpkin Farm Market

Country Bumpkin Farm Market

Country Bumpkin Farm Market

Country Bumpkin Farm Market is one of the most fun things to do in Wisconsin Dells, especially for families with children!

The family-operated and owned establishment was created in 1997 with the primary goal of selling its many varieties of fresh and sustainably grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, and berries that are newly picked every day.

Each month offers different produce options, as is natural with the progression of the seasons.

Spring starts with asparagus, then in April and May cucumbers and tomatoes arrive.

In the summer, fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, muskmelons, sweet corn, tomatoes, and watermelons are abundant.

And of course, with fall come the pumpkins!

Country Bumpkin Farm Market offers the opportunity for you to wander around the gardens and pick your own fruit and berries during certain periods.

Flowers and flower baskets are sold out of greenhouses, with over a thousand different pots grown annually.

Additional attractions include the Lil’ Bumpkin Petting Farm and Lil’ Bumpkin Play Village, a pedal kart raceway, a pedal tractor corral, a zipline for kids, mazes, catapults, and a Country Bumpkin Express Train Ride.

For those looking to get close to a farming lifestyle, this is a great way to gain that experience in Wisconsin Dells!

Wilderness Territory

With four indoor and outdoor water parks, the Wilderness Territory is one of the biggest resorts in the Wisconsin Dells. Offering an all-in-one experience, visitors will have few reasons to venture away from all the action.

The indoor and outdoor nature of the experience mitigates the impact of weather, allowing the fun to happen, regardless. With endless pools, lazy rivers and adult waterside bars, there’s something to keep everyone happy.

But the extensive theme park sets the resort apart from others. Go-karting, climbing and zip-lining. Play laser tag, jump on the bumper boats or play mini-golf. The choices are endless.

11. Chula Vista Water Park

Each exhibit is complemented by necessary information that will explain just how this oddity came to be. The Wisconsin Deer Park has been in operation for over five decades and remains a local favorite. The expansive and interactive park has plenty of walking trails through the calm forests along with petting and feeding areas.

Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, visitors can see the dozens of Virginia white-tailed deer with the opportunity to get up close and have them nibble right out of your hands. If you’ve arrived in the early summer, you may be able to see their baby fawns.

While it may take just a short time to complete the wheelchair accessible path, there are many places to stop and enjoy the serenity. Along the way, you’ll find spacious lawns along with benches and picnic tables for the entire family to enjoy. Bring along your favorite yard games or some snacks for a relaxing afternoon.

Having performed together for so many years, their theatrical chemistry is on full display. For returning visitors to the Dells, it’s always worth coming back as they offer a fresh routine every year,

6. Witches Gulch

Witches Gulch

Found in the Upper Dells, you can only reach Witches Gulch on a water-based tour. After taking the journey north along the Wisconsin River, passing pine-covered cliffs and navigating river narrows, you’ll reach land. Once you’re off the boat, you can embark on an eerie yet beautiful hike through a thin canyon.

Cut and carved out of an ancient lake, the sandstone canyon is more akin to some of the famous slot canyons in Utah. The thin passageways house hidden whirlpool chambers and can be gloomy in sections, adding a spooky element to the journey.

Continue on until you reach Stand Rock, a thin but towering natural structure. With one larger flat rock on top, Stand Rock appears to be wearing a hat. Here, your tour will reach its most memorable as a trained dog jumps from high above, off the top of the rock pillar.

5. Timbavati Wildlife Park

Timbavati Wildlife Park

Water parks are such a large part of the Wisconsin Dells experience. But if you’re searching for something different, then head to the Timbavati Wildlife Park. The park features animals from all across the globe, in various recreated habitats.

Timbavati was designed with the family in mind, with the opportunity to experience different worldwide nature up close and personal. The kids will have a blast on the Safari Train that will guide everyone through the park, visiting each habitat along the way.

Some of the popular stops include the Grasslands, where you’ll see giraffes eating from the treetops and antelopes frolicking about. If you’ve ever wanted to see a kangaroo with your own eyes, then get excited about the visit to the Woodlands.

4. Noah’s Ark Water Park

Noah's Ark Water Park

It’s fair to say that multiple days are needed to thoroughly explore the largest water park in the United States. But whether you have just one day or an entire week, you won’t soon forget Noah’s Ark Water Park.

Using five million gallons of water on three miles’ worth of water slides, the hardest part of your day will be deciding where to start. With over 50 rides and entertainment options, there are ample family-friendly adventures and blood-curdling experiences.

Split your time between the Bermuda Triangle and Dark Voyage tube rides before going on the Time Warp for a white-knuckle ride. To rest up, book your own cabana for an idyllic escape.

3. Kalahari Indoor Waterpark

Kalahari Indoor Waterpark

The largest indoor water park in Wisconsin is the complete experience. The expansive park covers everything from start to finish, even your accommodation. After arriving at the Kalahari Indoor Waterpark, check in to your private room just steps away from all the fun.

1. Take a Boat Cruise

Take a Boat Cruise

Since the middle of the 19th century, boat cruises have been a big part of local life in the Wisconsin Dells. One way to join in on the fun is to sign up for a Dells Boat Tour, where you can see firsthand how the city got its name.

The dells, created by millions of years of glacial carving, can be seen along the Wisconsin River. There are two tours on offer, to the Upper and Lower Dells. If you’ve already ventured to Witches Gulch, then make your way to the Lower Dells to see several famous rock formations.

Some of the highlights along the Lower Dells boat cruise include the stunning Rocky Island, Baby Grand Piano and Hawk’s Bill. To complete the experience, learn about Native American legends and the Lost City of Newport.

Mt. Olympus.

Suck of the Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

If a steamy, miles-long strip of motels, tourist traps, and quirky attractions sounds like a fever dream that could only happen in central Florida, listen closely. You can join three million leisure thrill-seekers, as we did, who jostle every year for a parking space and a motel room in -- Lake Delton/Wisconsin Dells. It's one of America's most over-the-top Tourism Meccas.

The Dells, as the towns are collectively known, distort the conventional laws of road trip physics. Attractions that we'd normally drive hours to see, even on a rumor -- a giant flamingo , a Castle of Terror, a Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty with "logging camp" food -- are dismissed here without a second thought. Sure, it'd only take a minute to stop, but who's got the time when there's SO MUCH ELSE TO SEE?

The natural beauty of the Dells -- the original reason that people came here -- is out of sight somewhere, behind the cacophony of signs and soaring ride superstructures. Try to glimpse it from your car and you're sure to ram into the back of a SUV sitting in the strip's frequent bumper-to-bumper weekend jam-ups.

Army Ducks display.

Signature kidney-pounding "Duck" boats still grind their way through the Dells' lovely woodlands and plow into the river, for those who want to rendezvous with nature. The boats -- born-again WWII amphibious beach invaders -- are impossible to miss, parked along the shoulder of every Dells strip, tempting the bold. Military-style Army Ducks are especially intriguing, for those who may want to season their ride with visions of rolling into Fortress Europe or Commie Vietnam.

A walk along Highway 12 in flip-flops and bathing suit -- standard attire in the Dells -- gets you a head full of memories in a single afternoon. Tommy Bartlett's Sky, Ski, and Stage Show guards the southern approach along with the TB Exploratory, which houses a spare Mir space station . Deceased billionaire Bartlett paid cash and brought it from Russia to the Dells as a tourist attraction. Dr. Norman Thagard in blue NASA coveralls -- the first American Mir veteran -- speaks to Exploratory visitors through the magic of video, although no one here can tell us what the Mir is made of or how much it cost.

Mine Your Own Gem Stones.

Closer to downtown, where the cruise strip clogs at night, are familiar Mecca pilot fish such as olde timey photo booths, wedding chapels, and U-watch fudge shops (The Dells pumps out more than two tons of fudge a day during the summer). More innovative fare is here, too, such as the Museum of Historic Torture Devices ("Nothing is More Frightening Than Human History") and Wizard Quest. Old standbys like Lazer Runner and Storybook Gardens pull 'em in year after year, while upstarts such as Monster Truck World and Ghost Out-Post fight to establish a following.

Loony Bin.

While the kids exhaust their energy at Noah's Ark (home of America's longest water coaster), mom and dad revel in the nearby climate-controlled thrills of the Ho-Chunk Indian Casino. The fun rolls on even after the summer season -- and give the Dells credit: with its northern latitude and claim to be the Water Park Capital Of The World, that sounds impossible. But the Dells simply moved its water indoors, creating the first indoor water parks and wave pools in America.

At times the Dells seems like a ravenous snake, swallowing tourists whole, digesting their lump of vacation energy and disposable income slowly over the course of several days. It periodically sheds its skin of failing or marginal attractions, and tries again -- and again. Xanadu, Home of the Future : razed and replaced by an erupting volcano! The low-tech (and beloved) Mass Panic : bulldozed and reborn as the exhaustively impressive Top Secret Inc. !

Aerie characters at Wizard Quest.

Big Chief Go Kart dumped its Indian motif for pagan mythology, and built three giant wooden roller coasters -- all named for Greek gods -- and an awe-inspiring 60-ft-tall wooden Trojan Horse. It was given hypnotic strobe light eyes and an elevated go kart track to cleave through its lofty belly. Then, exhausted, Big Chief and neighboring Treasure Island were absorbed into the vast Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park , which operates year-round with the tallest and longest indoor water slides in the nation!

Even an accidental draining of Lake Delton wasn't enough to knock the fun out of the Dells, although it did beach the water ski show for a season.

Extreme World straps you into a bungee chair and fires you skyward. Next door, the former Haunted Viking Ship turned Alligator Alley challenges you to feed live reptiles. Zot the purple space monkey harasses visitors at the Looney Bin while the Dells 4D Special FX Theater warps their vision. There are gem mines, comedy clubs, helicopter tours, or maybe you'd rather hang out at the incongruous Wisconsin Opry dinner show while the Skyscraper , a two-bladed windmill with 80-ft arms and a seat at each end, spins its masochistic passengers end-over-end at 75 mph!

Is this the end of the world? No, it's just another day in Dells, our new millennium of fun.

19 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Dec 22, 2023

Wisconsin Dells, in central Wisconsin, is a destination that ignites your inner child. With the largest concentration of water parks in the world and an abundance of theaters and museums, your vacation can center on as much water or land as you like. If you prefer a little of both, take a trip on the famous Original Wisconsin Ducks Tours, which provides one of the most iconic experiences of the area on board an amphibious vehicle.

The region, which includes Lake Delton , is collectively known as the Dells, and it is one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin, especially for families. You can easily find tourist activities, like ziplining, skiing, and live entertainment, but it is difficult not to notice the natural sandstone bluffs, wildlife, and canyons that surround you.

One of the most notable areas, while difficult to get to on foot, is the Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area. Views of some of the sandstone skyscrapers can be seen from the Wisconsin Dells River Walk, but the best way to observe the State Natural Area is on a sightseeing tour along the Wisconsin River.

There are other ways to experience the natural side of the Wisconsin Dells, with wildlife viewing opportunities at attractions like the Wisconsin Deer Park ; a hike through the Dell Creek State Wildlife Area ; or the conservation refuge of the International Crane Foundation , where you can observe all 15 species of cranes in the world.
