Real Borneo Tour

Real Borneo

This trip was so much fun! It was really well coordinated with the right amount of free time. The first hotel in kota kinabalu is extremely nice but there are heaps of other cheaper hotels quite close if you're staying an extra day. If you want to see the city, stay an extra day or two as you don't get much time included in the tour. 1-2 days in KK would be enough as it's pretty small. Sepilok is really cool and there are heaps of things to do, however a lot of them are guided tours and they cost quite a bit. If you're trying to save, you could just opt to stay at the hotel as it has a pool and a restaurant. Wifi is only in the restaurant area and rooms have fans, no air con. Next is the eco camp which is really cool as it's right in the middle of the jungle. There are SO many mosquitos so don't think you can get away without repellant. Bring snacks as there's no where to get food outside of meal times. You'll probably also want lots of loose, long clothes to avoid sunburn. The tree planting you do here was pretty average but I guess cool to see. At lunch we got to do a cooking class which was pretty cool. The Batu Tulug caves were nice and worth a visit. The homestay depends a lot on your family but it's great to see how locals live. There's no wifi here or on the river at the eco camp, so if you need to check more than once every couple of days, get a local sim (they're pretty cheap anyway). Next you stay in the Kinabalu national park, which was bloody great for us because we got upgraded to this really fancy room. Once again there's no wifi and you have to buy something at a really expensive restaurant to use it. Food is all buffet here which is really fun. The hike was awesome and you can read reviews on it elsewhere, but some things specific to geckos might put some people off this tour. Firstly, we had some people on our group who had chronic medical conditions such as asthma. They were only told the day before the climb that they wouldn't be covered by insurance and if they wanted to climb it would be at their own risk. If you have something like this, it would be worth getting more comprehensive insurance and clarifying what this means for you with geckos before you go, as only learning about this the day before doesn't allow much time for decision making. Secondly, our group leader decided that we wouldn't go all the way to the summit as the weather was really bad. This was fine as we still got to base camp and got to do another smaller walk, and it's totally understandable of our group leader to put our safety first. However, a lot of other people went to the summit regardless (ie people not on our tour) and so if you're really really keen to get to the top, there's a risk you won't be able to with this tour. The poring hot springs were awesome as there are heaps of things to do there, but mostly the beds are comfortable which you'll need after the hike! The small waterfall (you'll find out when you get there) is awesome and definitely worth the 15 minute walk. The hot springs themselves are sort of gross, especially at the end of the day, as they get sort of dirty and you can see hair in them! So it's worth getting a private spa. There's also no wifi here but local cafes (ie across the road from the resort) have it. It's best to eat there too as the restaurant at the resort is really expensive. On the last day we didn't get back to KK until about 5pm and our guide organised a snorkelling trip for those of us who were still there for the next day which was really really good. Our tour guide, Felix, was absolutely awesome and was so passionate about Sabah and wildlife. This tour is a really comprehensive tour of Sabah and you get to see so much. It may seem expensive per day but we had a lot of transfers (including a flight) and got to climb Mt Kinabalu, and some of the hotels were a lot nicer than expected. One thing to keep in mind is that Malaysia is a Muslim country and for us they were celebrating ramadan at the time. This meant that a few restaurants were closed but we always found somewhere to go. We also got to experience the ramadan bazaars which were really cool! However it would have been marginally easier to go at a different time of year. This is also a great introduction into hiking and wildlife types of holidays if you haven't done that before. Sabah is a great place to travel and this tour makes it really easy and shows you the best bits.

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.

What people love about borneo tours.

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.

HELLO, SABAH - BORNEO TOURS DESTINATION!!

Why borneo tours .

If you are looking for amazing adventures in Borneo, you have come searching at the right place.

BORNEO , a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago, is known for its beaches and biodiverse rainforest where thousands of wildlife called home. The Sabah region of Borneo is quite rugged and the third largest island in Asia isn’t much explored, but the tropical Sabah wildlife is some of the most diverse. Sabah, Borneo has so much more to offer to wildlife-seekers and adventure enthusiasts.

HIKE UP MOUNT KINABALU

A majestic mountain located at the West Coast Division of Sabah, Mount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountains in South East Asia standing at 4095.2 meters and has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status. First-time climbers are advised to consider staying at Kinabalu Park or a highland resort at Kundasang one night prior to the climb to acclimatize the high altitude. Take it up a notch with Mount Kinabalu Via Ferrata , which provides access to scenic sections of the mountains that are typically made available only to mountaineers. It is also known as the world’s highest and Asia’s first via ferrata. This challenging route offers both Walk the Torq and Low’s Peak Circuit packages fitting for both beginners and intermediate climbers respectively. If you are a thrill-seeker, this is should be one of the top things in your bucket list!

BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS

If climbing or hiking is not your thing, activities such as paragliding, white water rafting at Kiulu or Padas rivers, quad biking on the terrains, or even scuba diving and island hopping are among the few activities you can choose from. Explore beautiful islands where you can find the most beautiful corals and swim alongside sea turtles. Look no further than the Lankayan Dive Resort at Lankayan Island or the Sipadan Island, Mabul Island , Kapalai Island , Mataking Island and Pom Pom Island for your fun island adventures.

ICONIC BORNEO WILDLIFE

Moving on to the east coast of Sabah, here we can witness that Borneo is truly a land blessed with wonderful eco treasures – from scenic islands to wildlife encounters and nature treks. Moreover, there is an amazing array of endangered and endemic Borneo wildlife such as the Orang Utans , Proboscis Monkeys, Bornean Sun Bear, sea turtles, and Bornean Pygmy Elephants .

Take a one day trip and learn more about these animals at Sepilok , Sun Bear Conservation Center , Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary , and Gomantong Cave . Selingan Island turtle hatcheries area also not to be missed if you are keen on witnessing turtles hatching and baby sea turtles being released back into the sea. Or opt to stay overnight at Kinabatangan River which is called the longest river in Sabah Borneo. This river is known as one of the most exciting and easily accessible places to explore the rich biodiversity of Sabah. Go on river safaris and night walks around the resort for wildlife spotting, even though wildlife spotting is not guaranteed but you will be assured of a nice escape from the busy city. Depending on your budget, you can choose to stay between Sukau, Bilit or Abai , these lodges are all located along the Kinabatangan River.

ANCIENT RAINFOREST

Looking for a nice getaway at one of Borneo Forest Reserve? Danum Valley Conservation Center’s Borneo Rainforest lodge and Tabin Wildlife Reserve are one of our top picks. These lodges provide a nice combination of luxury and wildlife spotting. Both lodges offer a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy the nice outdoors. The mud volcano at Tabin is one not to be missed. If you are keen to get off the tourist tracks to spot for wildlife, take a few days overnight trip to Deramakot Forest Reserve or Danum Valley Field Center. Even though the lodging is simple but it will leave you with an unforgettable experience.

CULTURAL RICHES

Not too keen on all the adventures? No fret, Borneo has something for everyone. Why not come and learn about the cultures and traditions of the natives living in Sabah with us. We’ll take you on a trip to Mari-Mari Cultural Village , Rungus longhouse, War memorial park, and even places as far as the Tip of Borneo where you will hear stories of local people that were passed down from generations to generations.

The best things in life are the people you love and the memories you make, this part of Borneo will definitely leave you with memories that last a lifetime!

ALICE'S ADVENTURES ON EARTH

3 Days in Borneo

Borneo is a large rugged island in Southeast Asia shared by both Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, it holds some of the most biodiverse forests and reefs in the world and is great for rugged adventurers wanting to see wildlife and unique fauna. A short one hour flight from Kuala Lumpar, I traveled to Sabah, a region of rich heritage and amazing natural wonder. A melting pot of Hindu, Muslim, Malay and Chinese traditions and cultures. It is a very laidback and welcoming place still fit for backpackers and would be wanderers where you can really get away from it all. After exploring temples in Cambodia I was excited to see the rugged island of Borneo and hike the famed Mt. Kinabalu. I landed in the capital city of Kota Kinabalu, Kota for short it is a popular backpackers destination.

borneo tour 3 days

Climbing Mt. Kinabalu

It was from Kota that I set off to hike Mount Kinabalu 4,095m the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. CLimbing to it’s peak requires a guide since it is park of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Park. The climb is staged as an overnight climb taking two days with a night spent at a refugio. After being picked up in the early morning from Kota I set off via a van for the hour drive to the mountain park. The drive brings you through beautiful tropical lowlands and up into the rainforest where I would began my hike.

borneo tour 3 days

TIPS:   Don’t worry if you aren’t a prepared hiker the rest house shop has headlamp rentals, warm clothes and plenty of snacks and things to keep you hydrated. Guides:  Guides are required to hike Kinabalu as it is part of the World Heritage Site. Make sure you book direct as there are many fake companies trying to get hired for guide service. Cool Season in SouthEast Asia: END OF SEASON SALE

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

After visiting Orangutans and climbing Kilimanjaro my last activity in Borneo was a day on and in the water. I had been told that Borneo has some of the most beautiful reefs in the world. My hope had been to visit the island of Sipadan off the Eastern Coast of Tawau but the logistics would have added several days I did not have to my itinerary. Kota Kinabalu also has several reefs within the vicinity that can be snorkeled or scuba dived, so I planned to head to the marina and hop in a boat destined for some of the islands off the coast. Our first stop was the island of Manukan which is a popular spot for locals and tourists. Many of which brought picnics to spend the day and enjoy the beach. The island has some facilities with a small store, restrooms and dock. Snorkel gear in hand I jumped in the water hoping to see colorful fish, corals and clear waters. Unfortunately what I saw were plastic water bottles, a diaper and other plastic waste. While I did see fish and corals I was saddened by the onslaught of human trash and litter that had made its way into the ocean.

My swim through debris was cut short by a sudden rain storm. Most of the island visitors crammed there way under the one awning on the dock to wait for the return of one of the island boats to return us to the mainland. The boat ride back was one of the most interesting of my life, with almost zero visibility the open boat and it’s passengers were drenched to the bone. We had no idea if we were going in the right direction so the driver decided to point us in the direction of land and drive straight until we see it then we would know when to turn and head north back towards Kota. After drying off at my hotel  and having a final meal of Chicken curry and fried rice it was time to head back to the airport and off to my next destination, Bali Indonesia.

Learn more about Borneo

Best time to visit borneo.

Borneo's climate is typical for a tropical region - generally hot and humid all year-round.

Temperatures are usually in the low 70F ° s for most of the year, dropping back to the high 60F ° s at night.

Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by sunshine. The 'wet season' runs from November through to February but it does rain throughout the year, although our itineraries are rarely affected.

The state of Sabah is known as the 'land below the wind' as it's below the monsoon belt.

Culture and customs

The cultures across Borneo can vary depending on what border you’re closest to – divided into Malaysian, Indonesia and Brunei regions.

Borneo’s population is largely made up of Malay with the predominant religion being Muslim. The remainder of Borneo’s population is Chinese, Indian or belong to indigenous populations.

You may hear the word ‘Dayak’ used by locals as a general term referring to the riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups in Borneo.

Historically, most indigenous communities in regional areas lived in longhouses, though many have moved for employment in urban areas. That being said, there is still a substantial number of Dayak tribes that maintain a strong spiritual tie to the rainforest and have retained their customs and speak local dialects.

Food and drink

Rice (nasi) and noodles (mee) are dietary staples across the island and accompany most meals. You’ll find varieties of white, red and brown rice grown throughout Borneo – prepared by steaming, frying, boiling into a breakfast porridge, or cooking with coconut milk in a hollowed bamboo stick to make lemang.

Must-try foods in Borneo

1. Sarawak laksa

This Malaysian-influenced staple is a spicy broth filled with vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, chicken slices, shrimp and coriander.

Skewers of meat (usually beef or chicken) are grilled to perfection over charcoal.

3. Roti canai

Fried roti bread that is crispy, fluffy and soft all at the same time. It might be served with savory or sweet fillings (from eggs and sardines to coconut jam and bananas), dipped into curry and lentil sauces, or enjoyed on its own.

4. Bamboo chicken

Chicken marinated in chilies, lemongrass, garlic and ginger is stuffed into a bamboo stick with rice, sealed with turmeric leaves and cooked over an open flame until all the flavors merge together.

Geography and environment

The South-East Asian island of Borneo sits just south of the South China Sea, with the Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, Makassar Strait, Java Sea and Karimata Strait also surrounding the island.

Split up between three countries (Brunei, Indonesia , Malaysia ), the regions most visited by tourists (Sabah and Sarawak) belong to Malaysia.

Home to the oldest rainforest in the world, large cave and river systems and mountains, Borneo has an incredible range of biodiversity with hundreds of species of birds, bats, plants, flowers and insects living in this ecologically precious part of the world.

Sitting 4,095 m above sea level, Sabah's Mount Kinabalu is the third highest mountain in South-East Asia and a popular trekking spot for active travelers looking for a challenge.

History and government

Early history.

Early on, Borneo was used as a port for trade, with the Chinese and Indians stopping in on the coast as a part of their trade route from 500 to 1300 AD. The Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and British were soon to follow. Because of this, Borneo now has a rich diversity of international influences to draw upon from these years of trade and interaction with other cultures.

With most of coastal Borneo falling under the rule of the Javanese Majapahit kingdom in the 14th century, the Sultanate of Brunei extended its rule in the north from the 15th to 17th century. By the 19th century, both the British and the Dutch had colonial interests in the area, with a dynasty led by James Brooke ruling Sarawak for many years. Brooke's interest in the area stemmed from his attempts at trade in the Far East and connections to the Sultanate of Brunei. Brooke's rule was fraught with controversy and battles with the Sea Dayak people, who interrupted trade and were labeled as pirates. James Brook was succeeded by his nephew, Charles, and then his son, Vyner, in this rule known as the 'White Rajahs' of Sarawak.

Recent history

Japan took control of Borneo during World War II, resulting in a high number of deaths for the local population. During the war, many British and Australian prisoners of war were sent to Borneo, with the most notorious spots being Sandakan where thousands of Allied soldiers perished due to disease, malnutrition and exhaustion.

By the conclusion of the war in 1945, Borneo was freed from the Japanese yet only two decades later, Borneo was the site of more conflict, this time between Indonesia and Malaysia. This conflict arose from the union of Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya in the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. More recently, the Sultanate of Brunei became an independent nation (in 1984).

Palm oil plantations have spread rapidly throughout Borneo in the last ten years, mainly due to the decline in the rubber industry. While these plantations have provided jobs and helped the economy in the short term, their proliferation has led to wide-scale deforestation, which surmounts to devastating habitat loss for many of Borneo's endangered species and displacement of indigenous people who rely on the forests and jungles to sustain their hunter-gatherer lifestyles.

Top 10 nature spots of Borneo

1. mount kinabalu.

Seeing sunrise from the top of Mount Kinabalu is a fine payoff for making it to the top. The climb, while strenuous, is filled with beautiful flora, interesting animals and beautiful vistas - making this majestic mountain a true natural highlight of Borneo.

2. Poring Hot Springs

Located within the Kinabalu National Park, these steaming hot pools of water provide a relaxing place to unwind after trekking Mount Kinabalu. Sliding into the open air baths is a therapeutic way to soothe your muscles - a nice outdoor reward for completing such a climb!

3. Bako National Park

The oldest national park in Sarawak may be small, but with isolated beaches, jungles, waterfalls, rock formations and walking trails, visitors will be delighted in the perfect panoramas to photograph and range of wildlife viewing opportunities on offer.

4. Turtle Island

Lying just north of Sandakan, Turtle Island Park is a haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Witnessing turtles landing onshore at dusk, or baby turtles hatching, is one of life's most unforgettable moments.

5. Kinabatangan

This district of Sabah is know for its incredible array of wildlife and diversity of habitat, with limestone caves, swamps, rivers, lakes, forests and mountains all contributing to the ecological diversity of the area. Home to such rare species as the Asian elephant, the proboscis monkey and the Sumatran rhinoceros, a visit to the jungle here will guarantee some wildlife viewing thrills.

Meeting the gentle orangutans of Sepilok is a must-do for visitors to Borneo. These orange-tinged creatures are captivating, entertaining and cheeky - and watching them play, eat and interact in the jungle of Sepilok is a privilege not to be missed.

7. Headhunters' Trail

Walking in the footsteps of one of the world's most mysterious, feared and intriguing people may not be for everyone, but walking along the famed Headhunter's Trail reveals a little bit of local history as well as many wondrous natural sights.

8. Mulu National Park

Visitors should overlook Mulu National Park at their own peril. Not visiting this World Heritage-listed area would mean missing out on canopy walks and treks that reveal exotic creatures, spectacular caves and stunning limestone karst formations.

9. Danum Valley

This area of pristine lowland rainforest is arguably one of Borneo's premier wildlife hot spots. Walk the trails and spot exotic birdlife, interesting plants, flying squirrels, vocal frogs and active gibbons.

10. Gaya Island

Get away from it all and revel in the seclusion of Gaya Island, located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. See tropical fish swimming through colorful reefs, learn to scuba dive, laze on the uncrowded beaches or grab a kayak and go exploring this slice of tropical beauty.

While Borneo's wild landscapes and beautiful beaches are definitely the true highlight of any visit, there are still treasures to found in Borneo's markets.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Borneo

1. Ikat weaving

This traditional weaving process results in colored, patterned textiles that can be used as clothing, wall hangings and home furnishings.

2. Wood carvings

Sarawak boasts a population of talented wood carvers -wooden bowls, charms, masks and figurines are all wonderful souvenir choices.

3. Ceramics

Sarawak also has a wide range of good-quality ceramics and pottery thanks to the local populations of Chinese and Iban tribal potters, each group possessing their own distinctive style.

Festival and events in Borneo

Rainforest world music festival.

The diversity of world music is celebrated over three days each July in the heart of the Borneo jungle. Hoards of eager festival-goers flock to Kuching, Sarawak (in Malaysian Borneo) for daytime music workshops, cultural and craft displays and evening concerts by indigenous performers from all over the globe. And like every good festival, there are always plenty of food stalls serving up yummy Malaysian and Asian foods.

Borneo International Kite Festival

Each September, the seaside town of Bintulu shows us how cool kites can be. Kites of all shapes, colors and sizes fill the sky for stunning displays and kite flying competitions. Come and watch the others show off their skills, participate in a kite-making workshop or take in the cultural performances.

Gawai Dayak (Harvest Festival)

More than just a celebration of the rice harvest, Gawai Dayak is an important symbol of unity for the Dayak and is celebrated with gusto in cities and rural villages across Sarawak. Many longhouses open their doors to visitors, where they are treated to traditional costumes, ritual music and lots of locally brewed rice wine (tuak) and Dayak foods. Head to the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching for the liveliest celebrations, where parades and other festivities begin a week before the main event on May 31.

Borneo Cultural Festival

Hear, see and taste the best of Malay, Chinese and Dayak culture at this annual July festival. Lively music, traditional dances and other cultural performances take place on multiple stages over 10 days in the city of Sibu in Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo). Expect Dayak drums, Malay songs, Chinese dragon dances and lots of mouth-watering cultural eats.

The owner explained very clearly what we should expect and we got exactly that. It is very basic but that’s what is so charming and appropriate in the middle of the jungle. • ninjavdp 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 3D2N with lots of wildlife spottings We had a unique experience at the Kinabatanang river thanks to Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp. You feel the company's respect for nature: no mass tourism, back to basics, dedicated people... And this definitely resulted in wonderful and abundant wildlife spottings. During our 3 day stay, we didn't see any other tourist boats. Even in between the cruises, wildlife kept showing up at the camp site! Keep your eyes open. We recommend this jungle camp to everyone who really wants to feel connected to the jungle. Read more Written 11 September 2023
  • 176lised 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing wildlife spotting We are a family of 8 persons who had the opportunity to visit the Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp for 3D2N. It was for sure one of the highlights of our 4 weeks Borneo trip. It was a REAL jungle trip with 80 km distance to the next lodge meaning that we were the only boat on the river spotting the animals. We saw 3 wild orangutans: one just at our camp site, one sleeping in a tree and one from the boat .. just amazing. Additionally to this we saw a lot of birds: several eagels & hornbills & others and we even saw 2 wild cats… jusr great. The lodge itself is simpel (no internet access, toilet outside and bucket shower) but very clean and cosy. Our guide was very knowledgable and very very friendly- all in all this is a trip we will never forget- thanks a million times Read more Written 6 September 2023
  • Mobile601875 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Very basic experience in the rainforest On the positive side, the location was unique and the main ranger was very knowledgeable about the wildlife. We also really enjoyed the river cruises at dawn and dusk. On the more negative side , the facilities were very basic, which to be fair, we knew about beforehand. However, I strongly believe that there are a lot of very simple things that could be done to improve the experience. I would summarize as unique but rough. Read more Written 31 July 2023
  • CB14O 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience but no elephants NOT A PLACE TO SEE ELEPHANTS. I felt I needed to lead with that and write in all caps because I wish I'd known that ahead of time. I was told the last time they saw elephants was two months before I was there. I did a search for elephants in the reviews and as of July 24, 2023, not a single person reported seeing elephants here. This place is not near the same part of the Kinabatangan as most of the other options. The plus side of this is seclusion - we didn't see another tourist boat at any point in my 3 day/2 night trip. The down side is that the people staying in the more popular part of the river were seeing elephants pretty regularly when I was there (not every day and they're far from guaranteed, there was just good luck at that time frame). The advantage of being in the more popular tourist part of the river is that the guides are able to communicate with one another about good animal sightings. That being said, I had an absolutely fantastic stay here. The rooms were comfortable enough, the bucket shower was great, the guide was super friendly, and we saw a ton of wildlife. Proboscis monkeys on every boat ride, an orangutan on the trail on the Camp's property (which you are free to explore on your own during the day), all sorts of birds, macaques (pig tail and long tail), silver langurs, etc. Definitely bring a book and/or a deck of cards. There are boat rides in the morning and late afternoon which means you have about 8 hours during the day with nothing to do. The area where you'll sit is extremely comfortable (hammocks and total shade and not too hot). Assuming you're there for two nights (which is what most people do), there's a night walk one night and night ride the other night. The walk is for bugs and the ride is for birds. We did the 2D1N package and were fortunate to get a really good view of Pygmy elephants and an Orang Utan along with various monkeys and other creatures, birds and insects. There is a lovely relaxed atmosphere at the center, the staff are all very friendly especially our guide Apel. If you have the time 3D2N is possibly a good option, you will give you more opportunities to see more wildlife. I thought the food at the center was delicious but you might want to bring a few snacks for the journey there on the bus which took about 31/2 hours as we were one of the first to be picked up in Sandakan. • Alan587 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience in the jungle We did the 3D2N tour booked through Viator. The accommodation is basic - no phone signal/wifi, electricity only for a few hours a day, and the shower is just a bucket with cold water. However, it was an amazing experience. We had boat trips in the morning, afternoon and nighttime as well as a jungle walk. We saw langurs, proboscis monkeys, macaques, kingfishers, hornbills, eagles, civets, owls and more. The guide and staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was fine and there were vegetarian options. Tea, coffee and drinking water were always available, and there was a chance to stop to buy other drinks on the way to the camp. There were no more than ten of us on the boat and there are no other camps/lodges nearby so we felt immersed in the jungle and well looked after by the staff. Read more Written 1 July 2023

With our family (2 adults and 2 young children of 6 and 10 years old) we stayed at this Camp from 27th till 28th of April 2023. The manager Salleh, his coworker Jay and all of the staff gave us an unique and wonderful insight of the wild nature in Malaysia. It was a basic and very clean camp and the hammocks were great and very popular by our 2 girls. They gave us a warm welcome and were very passionate during our boat trips and jungle walks. Thank you Salleh, Jay and staff for this great experience and we love to come back and spot the Urang Utan then ;-) Highly recommended!!!!! Read more Written 28 May 2023
  • N3214JDjessicas 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t Go To Selignan Island! Poor treatment of turtles and worse accommodations The accommodations are HORRIBLE, the plumbing in the rooms leaked from both sink and toilet. The sheets didn’t appear to have been changed, floors were filthy. Other people’s hair all over the room and dust when we checked into the room. The area where they re-bury the eggs in an attempt to preserve them until they hatch and are released is not secure, fencing needs repair and monitor lizards and cats were seen in the enclosure regularly. The methods of tagging the turtles seems inhumane. Rusty pliers used on mothers who have just laid and buried their eggs. They quite visibly wince from pain while being tagged. Better method-radio tagging can be adhered to shells painlessly as seen at other turtle rehabs. Insufficient care given to eggs and hatchlings decreases survival rates. Clearly they need funding to preserve turtles but accommodations need care and upgrades to entice eco-tourism. There is no other option but to stay overnight on the island, perhaps they should just have a night tour to avoid the disgusting accommodations. Read more Written 13 May 2023
  • Venture59444533057 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! What an awesome place!! We had a fantastic stay seeing numerous orangutans (6 on day one), crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, pythons, monitor lizards, hornbills, eagles, and many other creatures. Our hosts were brilliant, with guides Jai and Afiq sharing their extensive knowledge of the area and wildlife. The isolated location is perfect, having the lake at our doorstep and to ourselves, with only a very small group on site at any time. A young orangutan visited the campsite twice while we were there, feeding on wild figs right behind our room. A civet cat and monitor lizard also visited during our stay. The boat tours and night walks were great with different sights experienced each time. Two large pythons were seen at night and we were truly blessed to have experienced so many wonderful sights over the 3 day experience. For anyone wanting to experience the jungle away from everyone in a secluded, safe and very friendly environment, this is the place to be. Our hosts were absolutely superb with clean rooms, basic toilet and shower facilities, delicious food cooked on site and a truly relaxing atmosphere. Thank you Jai, Afiq and the rest of your team for giving us an experience we will never forget. Read more Written 22 April 2023

Both Afik and Ji were very astute on sighting various wildlife on our river trips and being able to speak about them. Aside from our various monkey and bird sightings We were lucky enough to have woken up to seeing an Orangutan in the tree near our camp site and sited a crocodile crossing the river. The Best Wildlife Safari in Borneo – A 3 Day Trip with Borneo Eco Tours

When you stay in the same place that Sir David Attenborough stayed , you know you’re on the best wildlife safari in Borneo. And when your accommodation is on National Geographic’s list of Unique Lodges of the World , you know it’s something special.

Scott and I did this and had the best wildlife safari in Borneo. Staying in the state of Sabah, we did the Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari tour for 3 days and 2 nights. We stayed in the world famous Sukau Rainforest Lodge  in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. From start to finish, everything about this Borneo trip, lodge, region and nature was indescribable. I’m going to try and describe our stay though!

This is my detailed review of Borneo Eco Tours including everything from the itinerary, wildlife, activities, prices, extra details to my personal thoughts about the trip. This is the most responsible tour company in Malaysian Borneo and I would highly recommend going with this Borneo travel agency if you want to ethically enjoy the wildlife of a Borneo safari for 3 days.

If you are thinking of booking one of the best Borneo tours and have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

How to Get to Sandakan, Sabah

To travel to Borneo, we took the 3 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan with Air Asia the day before our trip began. We wanted to be sure that we would be in Sandakan so we arrived the night before.

When we arrived, we got a Grab ride to our hotel for 7 MYR. I highly recommend downloading the Grab app if you are travelling Malaysia because it is so convenient, safe and you know you aren’t being ripped off. If you download the app , use my referral code, GRABHDTRAVELS and we will both get discount on our rides.

We stayed in a budget hotel called My Dream Hotel and Borneo Eco Tours were picking us up from here the morning of the trip. We stayed at My Dream Hotel in Sandakan booked via booking.com . It was the perfect accommodation for one night with lots of restaurants around and close to the airport. I’d recommend staying here if you are in Sandakan.

To reserve your accommodation, use this search box to take you straight to My Dream Hotel:

When we checked in to the hotel, Borneo Eco Tours had called the hotel to inform them of the time they would pick us up. This was the first example of Borneo Eco Tours Sandakan going above and beyond for their guests . As promised, a guide and driver from Borneo Eco Tours picked us up from our hotel and took us on to our first activity of the Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari tour.

Our Borneo Eco Tours Guide

We were in a group of 12 who were guided by a knowledgeable and friendly guide named Nexter. Nexter took us around each centre, travelled with us to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, drove the boats on our cruises and most importantly, answered every question about wildlife we had. Nexter was so helpful and his knowledge about the lodge, Sabah, Borneo and wildlife was beyond impressive.

The best part, though, was his passion and enthusiasm for conservation, sustainability and wildlife in general. It was heart-warming to see. I heard from other groups that all of the guides had this passion and knowledge too which reflects the wonderful job that Borneo Eco Tours and Sukau Lodge are doing.

Our guide, Nexter

My favourite line from Nexter was when he explained how the mother teaches her young about which fruits can and cannot be eaten. I asked, ‘how does the Orang-utan know which fruits are safe to eat?’ His reply was ‘it’s the magic of nature’.

What to Take

  • Take your own toiletries
  • Buy a reusable poncho/mac with a hood. Something like this one from Amazon.
  • Strong insect repellant! I wore long sleeved tops and trousers for cruises but more skin was showing at night and I got a grand total of 4 bites on my stay.
  • Take a refillable, metal bottle for the bus journeys and throughout your stay. This is the one I use.
  • Take binoculars.
  • Use a good camera. The wildlife is far away that you need binoculars so you’ll need a good camera to capture these precious moments. I used OSMO Pocket and it did the perfect job. It was small enough too that when it rained a little, I just had it below my poncho to cover it. Buy the Osmo Pocket here and you won’t regret it.  I also took 2 memory cards with me because I shot so much footage and didn’t want to run out of space. You can buy the Osmo Pocket & Expansion Kit (comes with a memory card) through this link.

Day 1 of the Best Wildlife Safari in Borneo

Everywhere and everything that I mention below is guided and transported by Borneo Eco Tours employees. They took good care of us from start to finish.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – Borneo Safari Stop 1

Covering a rainforest area of 43 sq km (10,610 acres), Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre is a conservation, established in 1964 and open to the public. The centre is owned by Sabah Wildlife Department and co-funded by them, tourists to the centre and by the charity, Orangutan Appeal UK.  This is one of the best things to do Borneo because it’s a chance to see Orangutans in the wild.

When we arrived, we learned about the centre through Ruth, a worker from Orangutan Appeal UK and then watched an educational movie about the plight of Orang-utans and the conservation work in Sabah.

There are around 60-80 Orang-utans living freely in the reserve. It is not a zoo.  The video and staff make it clear that there is not allowed to be any human contact, you must keep a distance, you must keep to the boardwalk and you are not allowed to take any bags in with you at all.

There is an Orangutan Nursery where the trained rangers look after orphaned Orang-utans to rehabilitate them in the hope that they one day be released into the wild. They are orphaned due to illegal logging, deforestation and being kept as pets.

If you want to ethically see an Orangutan, here is the place to go.

Note: Borneo Eco Tours allow you to leave your belongings on the bus and the driver stays with the bus. There are lockers and keys (free of charge) at the centre though if you want to lock your belongings. Also, there is a camera charge of 10 MYR.

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

2 Bornean Sun Bears

Straight afterwards, we went over to the Sun Bear Conservation centre . Sun Bears are the smallest bears in the world and only found in South East Asia. There are currently 43 rescued Sun Bears at the centre, all of which are going through rehabilitation to release them back to the wild.

One Sun Bear was released to wild in April 2019 and the last time he was located was a month later. During which, the Sun Bear had travelled 35km. This is evidence that the rehabilitation works and he has survived in the wild.

Lunch and Journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge

Afterwards, we headed for lunch in the form of a buffet with a selection of fish/chicken/tofu with rice, stir fry, potato curry and salad.  There was f ree water and coffee on offer.

An hour later we headed to our bus for our overland journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge. There is free wifi on board the bus and refillable drinking water tanks.

The bus ride was comfortable and easy which took about 2.5 hours. We arrived at the Kinabatangan River where we boarded a small boat ride. After 5 minutes, in the horizon we could see the impressive lodge perched over the river bank waiting to greet us. Our luggage followed behind us.

On arrival, we were given the warmest welcome from the smiling staff and directed to ‘Gomantong Hall’ for check-in and housekeeping. We were given freshen-up towels and welcome drinks with bamboo straws. The straws were the first glimpse of the sustainability methods practiced at the lodge . We were given our room keys and our luggage was waiting on our doorsteps for us.

Note: All other drinks are not included in the price across the entire tour. For example, a tiger beer at lunch was 8 MYR and in the lodge was 18 MYR.

About Sukau Rainforest Lodge

Founded in 1994, Sukau Rainforest Lodge was an idea by the founder of Borneo Eco Tours, Albert Teo. Teo recognised the interest from tourists about the Kinabatangan River and decided an eco company needed an eco lodge. To build such a lodge, the company needed to buy land. The book written by Albert Teo and Carol Patterson,  Saving Paradise is dedicated to Kari Bin Ongong, ‘the one man who had the courage to step out of his comfort zone to provide a livelihood for his people.’

To learn more about the lodge, you can buy Saving Paradise  from Amazon here .

The link between the lodge and local people is so strong that 80% of staff are from the local area. One of the guides informed me that the lodge would not be what it is today without the knowledge and support of the local people. The lodge’s dedication to teaching locals and tourists aligns with my concept of learning about our world. I felt a connection to this place and learned so much more than I expected.

A strong policy of the accommodation is sustainability. You can see it in every corner of the place. From zero plastic and solar panels to electric motors on the boats to minimise noise pollution. They give out scholarships to locals and therefore improve employment as well as tree planting schemes. To read more about the lodge’s sustainability, read their policies here .

Sukau Rainforest Lodge from the boat view

The lodge boasts 2 swimming pools, relaxing lobbies with free wifi, free water stations, a souvenir shop, a few bars, a restaurant on the river and stunning boardwalks. You can use all of the amenities and enjoy the serenity of surrounding nature. They also have ‘resident’ orangutans , a mother and a baby who are occasionally spotted around the lodge. The lodge do not feed or interact with the orang-utans but the apes return because the lodge is in the mother’s territory. The apes do have names though, the mother is called Lucky and the baby is called Day because if you get a chance to see them, it’s your lucky day!

What Exactly does it mean to be a Part of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World?

Nat Geo have a list of Unique Lodges of the World. There are only 55 lodges on this list. Sukau Rainforest Lodge is one of them. It’s also the only one in Malaysia and there are only 5 in the whole of Asia. And I stayed here! When you arrive and you see the lodge on the banks of the mighty river, you can instantly see how it has made the list. Here, y ou are brought into the present amongst beautiful nature.

A guide informed me that to become part of Nat Geo’s list, there are over 50 things the lodge needed to have. Protecting natural and cultural heritage and sustainability are two of them which the lodge has smashed out of the park. Sukau Rainforest Lodge made Nat Geo’s lists of the best places to get face-to-face with wildlife and best lodges to visit in the fall.

Sir David Attenborough

Borneo has featured in several of Sir David Attenborough TV shows. Sir David Attenborough and BBC crew stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge in 2011 while they were filming. More about the boat they used in ‘Dinner by Candle Light and Bar’ section below.

A few years ago, Sir David helped stop a bridge being built over the Kinabatangan River. Read all about what happened here.

One of the villas has proudly been named after him.

Other famous guests include the Prince of Denmark and Dame Judy Dench. Some of the staff were excited to tell me about the times where they met the guests. They said that Sir David Attenborough’s voice is exactly the same in real life.

Afternoon River Cruise of Borneo Wildlife Tours

Just after enjoying our afternoon tea and doughnuts, we headed out on the mighty 560km-long Kinabatangan River for our first of 3 included Borneo Jungle Safari. After only a few minutes in the boat, we already found Proboscis monkeys high in the trees. You really need to get the binoculars out for these animals and see the size of their noses. The ones with large noses are male and the ones with pointed noses are female. We seen an array of other wildlife too from birds flying overhead to crocs basking on the banks.

2 Proboscis Monkeys in the tree

Later on, we found another group of Proboscis monkeys and it was clear who the alpha male was. His thighs were enormous and he sat high in the tree as the others went one by one to jump to another tree. Each monkey took their time, sussing out the jump and waiting a while after the last had gone. All of a sudden, this loud rushing of trees happened so quickly that if you blinked, you missed it. It was the alpha male who, with no hesitation, made the giant leap proving his experience and dominance over the group. It was fascinating to watch.

Dinner by Candle Light and Bar

When it’s dinner time, you are alerted by three rings of the gong that vibrate throughout the grounds and create a buzz amongst guests. Buffet dinner offers local meals using local produce and is served on the actual boat that Sir David Attenborough used in his BBC documentary.

The buffet table which was the boat David Attenborough used for filming.

In your room, you are given traditional Bornean sarongs to wear for dinner time. You’re given a demonstration on how to apply them upon check-in.

It was a truly unique experience to wear traditional clothing, eat local food with candle-light, looking over the mighty river while dazzling red and orange lightening filled the dark sky in the distance.

Me wearing traditional pink sarong

Optional Activity – What is Sukau Rainforest Lodge?

After dinner, in the ‘Ape Gallery’ room, there is a projector and screen along with one of the guides waiting for guests. The presenter was Nexter and he gave us so much information about the history and projects of Sukau Rainforest Lodge. It was a great insight into where we were staying and I’d highly recommend taking half an hour to listen to this discussion. He informed us that part of the money spent by tourists go into conservation and he personally thanked us for coming to Sukau Rainforest Lodge . Very humbling.

In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle…

…things come out at night! We had some drinks in the Gecko Bar and lots of geckos were there to join us. As were mosquitos, beetles and bats. The bats, we should be thankful for, because they kill up to 1000 mosquitos per night !!

At night, the sounds coming from the wildlife in the rainforest remind you that you’re in their home. From the owls to the Orangutan’s call, they were out there. At night too, you can hear what we assume were macaques running across the roof of our rooms. It was so cool!

Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari – Day 2

The rainforest awakens.

… as do we! After making all that noise the night before, everything else living in the jungle wakes up before the crack of dawn and we didn’t want to miss a second of it.

Our group on the boat with river in background

We had a wake-up call around 5.25am and a quick bite to eat while it was still dark. Then we waited at the jetty to start our 2 hour Kinabatangan River cruise. The sun was rising and the rainforest was awakening. It was gorgeous for our river safari in Borneo.

We went up the Kinabatangan River and toward Kelenanap Ox-Bow lake to spot wildlife. We managed to spot 3 baby crocs basking in the morning sun, a huge lizard, a smaller lizard and a tiny lizard poking his head out of a hole. Next up were more Proboscis monkeys waking up with energy to swing amongst the trees as well as macaques close by. I looked back behind the boat and the birds were so pretty flying on the horizon.

Sunrise over the river

We then returned to a full breakfast waiting for us.

Hornbill Boardwalk Guided Tour

At 11am, we joined an educational walking tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk spotting more macaques and birds, and learning about the trees surrounding us.

Optional Activity – Learn About Orang-utans

After some free time, there is a free talk to learn about orang-utans. I cannot emphasise enough how important and useful it is to attend this talk.

This information CANNOT be found on the internet because its all in-house research conducted. This is unmissable. Out of 70 guests at the lodge, only 6 of us went to this talk. I believe they missed out on this informative presentation about the orang-utans.

Me in the restaurant enjoying coffee and doughnuts

Kinabatangan River Cruise in the Afternoon

The afternoon wildlife once again did not disappoint. We saw long tail macaques running in groups of 40/50, all hanging in the trees with some curious and coming closer to us. While cruising, we saw impressive Hornbills flying over us and further down the river we seen 3 families of Proboscis monkeys. Then, along came some long tail macaques who disturbed one of the Proboscis monkey families. It seemed to then be a case of showing off with the different animals on either side of the river jumping to and from trees, trying to out-do the ones on the other side. It was entertaining. Then we had a few moments of utter silence and the peacefulness I felt, was something remarkable. I felt in the moment and it was thanks to nature.

Macaque on the low ground

Back at the lodge, on the cue of the gong, we had a scrumptious dinner of local food, sitting with our group and reflecting on the day before getting ready for the night cruise.

Optional Activity – River Cruise by Night

We paid extra (80 MYR each) to go on a night-time river cruise. The night was a completely different experience to the day. It felt both eerie and calm at the same time. Out on the river was pitch black with just the moon reflecting on the small ripples. Your guide drives the boat and shines a torch, looking for any wildlife. Their eyes are so good because they spot the smallest of creatures that we easily missed. We seen all sorts of nocturnal creatures. We didn’t manage to see an owl but another group did… that’s nature.

Kingfisher at Night

I’d recommend taking the night tour for another unique experience. While we were there we said to ourselves, when will we get another chance to cruise the Kinabatangan River at night?

Learning from Sukau Rainforest Lodge Staff

Everything runs so smoothly and the staff don’t let you lift a finger. Even the small details that make you smile a little bit more and a homely feel.  The employees are the ones that make the lodge that extra bit special. Nothing is too much for them and they are always around to help you with anything.

We were also welcomed by the rainforest when we had a huge downpour of rain. But as quick as it came, it went. The staff quickly came around to give out umbrellas. It’s the little touches.

Lodge in the rain

One of my favourite moments was when we finally realised what the loud bangs were. Since we arrived, we kept hearing this loud thud which we assumed was probably work going on somewhere. Only when we sat at the bar chatting with the staff did they tell us what the bangs were. It was mango called ‘Belunu’ falling from the trees and hitting the ground or the roof of huts. I couldn’t believe that a fruit could make that noise but when one of the staff collected the fruit for us to see, it was quite large to be fair.

Giant mango fallen from the tree

It is a sought after and rare fruit that only comes once every four years.  We clearly picked the best time to visit Borneo. We were also allowed to try a small bit (so delicious) but not too much because we were drinking alcohol and the two aren’t great when mixed.

Thank you staff members for giving us this extra experience.

Day 3 of the Ethical Wildlife Trip in Borneo

Checking out of the jungle.

One last glorious breakfast in the unique lodge and it was time to say goodbye to our temporary home. The tour went so fast and I’d love to have had another few days there! We paid up our bill and started the journey back to Sandakan which took about 2 hours. Lots of staff were on the jetty to wave us off and I felt a sense of gratefulness for experiencing this and meeting these wonderful people.

Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sandakan

Back in Sandakan, we had lunch at Sabah Hotel which was very tasty before driving 40 minutes to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. We purposefully booked a later flight so we could enjoy the activities in Sandakan.

In Rainforest Discovery Centre - Sign warning of falling fruit

The Rainforest Discovery Centre has a sky tower to savour the forest from a high view point. It has an indoor centre too where you can learn a lot about flora, fauna and wildlife in Sabah. This is one of the best things to do in Sandakan.

Sandakan Memorial Park

Next on the itinerary, was visiting the Sandakan memorial park for remembrance of World War II, Prisoners of War. This was a harrowing experience and something you must do when visiting Sandakan, out of remembrance for all those who lost their lives. There was a total of 2,500 prisoners, of which only 6 survived. This story might never have been known if it was not for those 6 survivors.

Sandakan Memorial park sign

The park has a serenity about it and is a good place to remember what happened to the victims during the war.

Ending the Best Tour to do in Borneo

All good things must come to an end. We were transferred to the airport to board our flight out of Borneo. I have to admit it was a little sad to leave such a beautiful island. We will, definitely, be back. We went in the month of August and I believe this to be the  best time to visit Sandakan as the weather was great for us as it didn’t rain too much and wasn’t too hot.

Wildlife Round-Up

We are lucky enough to have seen a vast amount of wildlife during our safari. When you’re facing nature, there are no guarantees and this is evidence of ethical tourism. The company/centre/lodge do not feed the wildlife (unless part of the rehabilitation process) or entice/use them for tourism in any way.

In three days we managed to see: dozens of plants and flowers, birds such as Heron, Kingfisher, Hornbill, Bats, Oriental Darter, lizards, mice, geckos and beetles. We were lucky to see Orang-utans, Sun Bears, Proboscis Monkeys, Long-tail and short-tail Macaques and turtles. And for one of the dangerous animals in Borneo, the Crocodile? We seen 5 juvenile crocs!

Baby Crocodile on the bank of river

We didn’t see Pygmy Elephants but that’s nature. I’m grateful for what we did manage to see, especially those only found in Borneo and the ones that are endangered. Sukau Rainforest Lodge is where to stay in Borneo for wildlife.

Register at the welcome center upon arrival and check-in after a briefing by the reception staff. Meet your guide, settle-in, and enjoy your local lunch. After lunch, chat with your guide to plan your days at the Danum Valley. Relax or take an afternoon siesta before going on a mid-afternoon walk in the area as an introduction to the Borneo rainforest. The area surrounding the center is teeming with wildlife and it is not unusual for you to spot resident orangutans, hornbills, reptiles, frogs, and much more! Return to the accommodation before sundown and enjoy dinner at 7:00 PM. After dinner, go on an included night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional 4×4 night drive (additional activity at your own expense payable to the reception). Overnight at Danum Valley Field Centre, Danum Valley / or Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (L / D)

Wake up early for an early morning trek with your guide at 6:00 AM to see the forest come to life. Alternatively, you can also pre-arrange a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur for a breathtaking sunrise experience above the tree canopy – please tell your guide in advance that you are interested in this and he can assist with booking accordingly (additional activity at your own expense). Return to the center for breakfast and embark on a jungle trail walk, if you wish. Spend late morning resting before having lunch and afterward, take a dip at the Ulu Segama river before heading off for another trek – there are various types of trails and your guide can discuss with you. Return to the center in the late afternoon, in time to watch the sky change color as the sun sets. After dinner, go on an included night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional 4×4 night drive (additional activity at your own expense). Overnight at Danum Valley Field Centre, Danum Valley / or Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (B/ L / D)

Birds of Borneo Tour – Visit Three of the Best Birding Locations in Borneo

Borneo is a world-recognised birding hotspot with an amazing 688 resident and migratory bird species, including 60 endemic species. It’s the combination of the amazingly rich birdlife, alongside known locations for perfect birding opportunities, that attracts birders to Borneo. The Birds of Borneo 3-Day Tour includes visiting two famous birding locations on the east coast of Sabah – Rainforest Discovery Centre and the Kinabatangan River. The Birds of Borneo tour has been created to offer you the best birding experience in Borneo with a focus on quality observations (including private boats for the extended river cruises), and all activities are led by a Birding Specialist Guide who is an expert in the bird species found in the Sepilok and Kinabatangan River areas.

Rainforest Discovery Centre is the first and last location during the Birds of Borneo tour. The Rainforest Discovery Centre located in Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve is one of the most accessible natural rainforests in Sabah and home to an astounding 300 species of birds recorded in the area. The canopy walkway at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, a 620-meter-long and 25-meter-high metal platform and walkway, is the longest in Sabah. It offers great birding opportunities to find canopy birds at eye level and is one of the highlights of the Birds of Borneo Tour. Some bird species prefer habitats in the understorey and forest ground, so you will have the chance to explore the well-marked jungle trails, too. Some of the Birds of Borneo species found here include the Black & Crimson Pitta, Blue-headed Pitta, Giant Pitta, Black Hornbill, Rhinoceros Hornbill, kingfishers – the Hooded and Black-and-Crimson Pitta, Scarlet Minivet, Red-bearded Bee-Eater, Banded Broadbill, Diard’s Trogon, Malkohas, Leafbirds, Spiderhunters, Crested Jay, Woodpeckers, and Bulbuls. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the iconic Bornean Bristlehead. Find out more  about birds of Borneo spotted at the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

Kinabatangan River and the Rainforest Discovery Centre – Home to Many of the Amazing Birds of Borneo

The Kinabatangan River is the longest in Sabah, flowing 560km to the Sulu Sea on the east coast. The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lower Kinabatangan River area and is home to 200 species of birds. The main activity you’ll join at the Kinabatangan River during the Birds of Borneo tour will be private river cruises, which offer a very relaxing way to go birding. The Kinabatangan River is a birders’ paradise where you can find some of the most sought-after birds of Borneo, including Storm’s Stork, Dwarf Kingfishers, Wallace’s Hawk-eagle, the Malaysian Flycatcher, Oriental Darter, and several species of Hornbills including the Rhinoceros Hornbill, the Asian Black Hornbill and the Oriental Pied Hornbill. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the White-fronted falconet, the smallest raptor in the world at ~ 14cm and the endangered Storm’s Stork. Find out more about birds of Borneo spotted at the Kinabatangan River. Don’t forget, during your rivers cruises, you’ll also get to see wildlife, which can provide highlights during the Birds of Borneo tour alongside the birding finds, especially if you are lucky enough to come across a wild Orangutan or a herd of the Bornean Pygmy Elephants.

The third location you’ll visit during the Birds of Borneo tour is Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Explore Labuk Bay’s enchanting mangroves in Sabah and discover a haven for diverse bird species. Witness vibrant kingfishers darting above the water, elegant egrets wading gracefully, and elusive Oriental-Pied Hornbills making appearances. The sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to observe these feathered wonders thriving in their coastal habitat from the elevated boardwalks that meander through lush mangrove forests, offering intimate encounters with these unique inhabitants.

If you’d like to explore more famous birding locations in Borneo alongside this Birds of Borneo Tour, then we can help you add on a trip to Danum Valley or Tabin Reserve , both famous birding locations in Borneo.

Kinabatangan River

As far as we know looking at local papers and government announcements There has never been any history of a security or criminal acts in the Kinabatangan area. This also includes Danum Valley, Tabin, Selingan island and Lankayan Island. However, there was a very small isolated incident on the outskirts of Sandakan.

The route to the Danum Valley Feild Centre Office in Lahad Datu is 124 kilometres and takes approximately 1 hour 54 minutes. Here is the normal route:

Take Jalan Sukau to AH150 for 32 min (36.8 km)

Follow AH150 to Lorong Fajar 1 in Lahad Datu for 1 hr 19 min (87.0 km)

Take Lorong Fajar 2 and Lorong Fajar 6 to Lorong Fajar 9 for 2 min (190 m)

The journey from Sandakan Airport (SDK) to Kinabatangan River (Bilit) is 156 kilometres and takes 1 hour 57 minutes approximately. The route it takes is:

Follow Jalan Airport and Jalan Lintas Labuk to Jalan Ranau – Sandakan/Jalan Sapi Nangoh/Route 22 for 8 min (5.1 km)

Follow Jalan Ranau – Sandakan/Jalan Sapi Nangoh/Route 22 and Jln Sandakan-Lahad Datu/AH150 to Kinabatangan for 1 hr 13 min (73.9 km)

Take Jalan Sukau to Jalan Kampung Bilit for 32 min (36.8 km)

Seeing an orangutan in its natural habitat is one of the top reasons for coming to Borneo. In Borneo, there are around 11,000 orangutans in Sabah and 1,600 in Sarawak. In Sabah, the top three places to see orangutans in the wild, along with other wildlife encounters on offer, are the Kinabatangan River, Danum Valley and Tabin Wildlife Reserve.

Kinabatangan River, Sabah

the Kinabatangan River is one of the best wildlife-watching destinations in Southeast Asia. If you spend a few days here joining river cruises you will have a very good chance of seeing an orangutan in the wild. Wildlife watching on the Kinabatangan is done from boats making this location suitable for a range of ages and fitness levels. The Kinabatangan River is the easiest and most ‘comfortable’ option in Borneo for seeing Orangutans in the wild.

Danum Valley, Sabah

Danum Valley  is the best place to see wild orangutans in pristine, undisturbed forest. Sightings are not ‘guaranteed’ but there is a pretty good chance of seeing an orangutan if you spend a few days at Danum. You will join guided treks into the forest in search of wildlife (including orangutans). The trekking is relatively easy so you don’t need to be super fit.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Sabah

Tabin Wildlife Reserve  is a large protected forest area covering 122,500 hectares. At Tabin, there are reasonable chances of seeing an orangutan by joining guided treks into the forest but they are not as high as Danum or the Kinabatangan.

Alongside these ‘seeing orang-utans in the wild’ options, you also have the chance to see orangutans at the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. At Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre illegally captured, orphaned and injured orangutans are taught to survive in the wild again. The Centre has two feeding sessions a day which is open to the public during which you can go to a raised platform to watch the orangutans come in from the surrounding forest to be fed.

Which one of these options is best for you for seeing orangutans in Borneo depends upon your budget, how to fit you are, how much time you have and the way you want to go in search of orangutan (by foot, boat or 4WD safari). Choose one, or more, of the above options to have the best chance of seeing an orangutan in Borneo.

The pygmy elephant (or Bornean pygmy elephant) are the smallest elephants in Asia and are endemic to Borneo. With only about 1,500 Bornean pygmy elephants left on Borneo, they are classified as critically endangered. For those visiting Borneo to see wildlife, the Bornean Pygmy elephant is likely to be in your top 5 of things to see. Encountering a herd of these elephants is unforgettable, and often once in a lifetime, experience. Whilst Borneo is big (it’s the third-largest island in the world) the pygmy elephant can only be found in a limited area in the forests of northeastern Borneo (with most found in Sabah, Borneo). The pygmy elephants migrate throughout the year, following a traditional corridor, and the top three places to see pygmy elephants in Sabah, Borneo are as follows:-

The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is a narrow corridor of Protected lowland rainforest along the banks of the Kinabatangan River. Herds of the Bornean Pygmy elephant migrate through this sanctuary and when they are passing through they can be seen for a few days along the banks of the river as they forage for food. If you are lucky to be visiting the Kinabatangan River whilst they are in the area you will have the privilege of being able to watch the elephants during morning and afternoon river cruises. As with all wildlife encounters, sightings cannot be guaranteed but the more days you spend at a Lodge on the Kinabatangan River (and therefore more river cruises you join) the increased chance of seeing the rarer wildlife finds like the pygmy elephant.

Danum Valley

Danum Valley , or Danum Valley Conservation Area, is one of the largest protected areas of primary rainforest in Sabah and offers a ‘safe-haven’ for the pygmy elephant and other wildlife found here. Elephants can often be seen along the access roads into Danum Valley, as well as roaming through the forest. There are two locations tourists can stay at in Danum Valley to see wildlife – Borneo Rainforest Lodge and Danum Valley Field Centre. At both locations, you are able to join guided treks into the forest, and guided night drives, in search of wildlife including the Bornean pygmy elephant.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Tabin Reserve is considered to be the largest wildlife reserve in Malaysia and covers an area of lowland forest of approximately 300,000 acres. It is home to the Bornean pygmy elephant as well as many other endangered wildlife species. Similar to Danum Valley, the access roads and guided treks into the forest provide the best opportunities to see pygmy elephants. There is one location tourists can stay at in Tabin Reserve –  Tabin Wildlife Resort .

At 560 kilometres long, the Kinabatangan River is Sabah’s longest river with the lower reaches of the River being home to a rich concentration, and diversity, of wildlife. This makes the Kinabatangan River one of the most popular places for tourists to visit during their holiday to Borneo. The simplest way to get to the Kinabatangan River is too join an organised tour. As the Kinabatangan River is located towards the east coast of Sabah the starting point for most tours to the River is from Sandakan (Sandakan Airport or from a hotel in Sandakan).

How do you get to Sandakan?

Sandakan is a middle-sized city located on the east coast of Sabah and well connected to Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. The main ways to travel to Sandakan from within Sabah are by plane, by public bus or by private transport.

Internal flights operate daily from Kota Kinabalu (BKI) and Tawau to Sandakan Airport. Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines operate daily flights from these airports to Sandakan. You can also fly direct from Kuala Lumpur Airport (KUL) to Sandakan Airport on a daily basis. Flying to Sandakan is an easy, quick option and if flights are booked well in advance you can typically pick up low price tickets with the airlines.

By public bus

A slightly cheaper option than flying is to catch a public bus to Sandakan Bus Station. You can catch a public bus from bus stations in Kota Kinabalu, Semporna or Tawau to Sandakan. The most popular bus route is from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan. In Kota Kinabalu, you will need to go to the northern bus terminal (located in Inanam). There are several buses here going to Sandakan on a daily basis. We’d suggest you try and catch the first buses to depart in the morning as it’s a long journey to Sandakan bus station (a ~ 6 – 7 hour journey).

By private transport

This includes hiring a car to drive to Sandakan, using a local taxi or via an organised private coach transfer.

How do I get to the Kinabatangan River Independently?

For independent travellers wanting to arrange their own way to the Kinabatangan River, there aren’t any direct public transport services to the two main villages on the river which provide access to Lodges on the Kinabatangan River – Bilit & Sukau. You would need to use local bus service and ask to be dropped off at Sukau Junction, followed by catching a transfer with a local van from Sukau Junction to either Bilit or Sukau (a ~ 45km journey). For this option, you still need to have booked a stay at a Lodge near the Kinabatangan River and arranged a transfer with the Lodge from your drop off point. This option may be a cheaper alternative to an organised tour but is a lot more hard work and involves more time for the amount you may save.

Where is Malaysian Borneo? Sitting in South East Asia and part of the Indonesian archipelago, Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea, the Java Sea and the Celebes Sea. It’s the world’s third largest island and the only one that’s shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The island’s Malaysian states are Sabah and Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur is under three hours away by air.

Kota Kinabalu Known locally as KK, Kota Kinabalu is the coastal capital of Sabah and gateway to your inland wildlife adventures. Much of it was destroyed in the 1940s Japanese invasion and although there are a few colonial buildings left, it’s here you'll find glinting shopping malls and a sizzling street food and night market scene. Hip restaurants, cool coffee houses and sunset views from the beach make this a vibrant capital and a great place from which to boat hop across to the islands that make up Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Gaya Island Located within Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a 20 minute speedboat transfer from Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Island balances natural beauty and marine conservation with luxury touches and plenty of watersports. It’s a feet-in-the-sands escape fringed by crystal clear waters and thriving coral reef that are a paradise for snorkellers and divers. Stay at eco-friendly Gaya Island Resort and you can snorkel with resident marine biologists, follow naturalists out on the proboscis monkey jungle trail and dine with Mount Kinabalu views.

Kinabalu Park Shadowed by the revered Mount Kinabalu, one of South East Asia’s highest mountains, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu Park boasts an incredible bio-diversity. Here naturalists can attempt to spot thousands of varieties of flora and half of all Malaysia’s bird, mammal and amphibian species – it may take a while though. Adventure seekers descend on the park to climb Kinabalu, bathe in the Poring Hot Springs, explore the tropical rainforest, trek to the Langanan and Kipungit waterfalls and visit the nearby butterfly farm to witness just some of the 850 varieties that flutter throughout the forest.

Danum Valley Danum Valley is one of southern Sabah’s most spectacular attractions and comes with a spine-tingling diversity and abundance of wildlife. Its dense and steamy 130-million-year-old virgin rainforest is one of the best places to spot Bornean orangutans and the elusive clouded leopard. You’ll likely see red leaf monkeys, Asian paradise flycatchers and flying squirrels on morning treks and treetop canopy walks, keeping in mind this is their natural habitat and you never know when they’ll be making an appearance.

Wildlife The highly intelligent orangutan is Borneo’s most eminent species and, either on trek into the jungle or a visit to Borneo’s various sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres, you are sure to come eye to doleful eye with one of these endearing yet endangered creatures. In the past 50 years the number of orang-utans in the wild has declined alarmingly due to the loss of habitat caused by illegal logging and the conversion of land to agricultural use, hunting, and human conflict.

(L-R) Seonghwa, San, Choi Jong-ho, Kang Yeo-sang, Wooyoung, and Song Min-gi of ATEEZ perform at Coachella.

North American stadiums and arenas have one thing in common this summer.

Starting mid-July, ATEEZ will perform at both huge MLB and NBA homes on their recently extended 12-concert summer ‘TOWARDS THE LIGHT : WILL TO POWER’ tour .

That includes a gig at New York’s Citi Field on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The quick U.S. jaunt comes on the heels of  Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho ‘s historic Coachella performance where they became the first K-Pop boy band to perform at the multi-weekend festival.

“We just want to make some stages where everyone can enjoy, and everyone can have fun,” San said in an interview with  The Hollywood Reporter .

And if you want to have fun with ATEEZ at one of their shows, tickets are available for all upcoming ‘TOWARDS THE LIGHT’ concerts.

Some are quite reasonably priced, too.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we found on tickets was $65 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other shows have seats going anywhere from $67 to $131 before fees.

Still need a few more details, ATINYs?

You’re in the right place.

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about ATEEZ’s 2024 ‘TOWARDS THE LIGHT : WILL TO POWER’ tour below.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard, scores: Reigning champion Jason Day three back of lead after Round 1

Jordan spieth also had a good, but not great, day at tpc craig ranch.

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson - Round One

After a copious amount of rain delayed the beginning of the first round at TPC Craig Ranch for the 2024 edition of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, scoring plummeted as players took advantage of soft conditions.

Players who shot even 1 under found themselves well back of the lead with tons of ground to make up over the next three days. This is not unusual for this golf course, though the overnight rain surely made it play a bit easier than it otherwise would have.

Several golfers took full advantage of the 2-under scoring average, including Alex Noren, Jake Knapp, Taylor Pendrith and Round 1 leader Matt Wallace.

Let's take a closer look at the first round on Thursday.

1. Matt Wallace (-8)

The Englishman went out early and destroyed the golf course. Incredibly, he was not even top 40 in putting but still posted eight birdies on the day. The question, of course, is whether he can sustain the lead. Wallace does not have a top-15 finish anywhere in the world this year.

Wallace said he's still learning about his game and how to play it at the highest level, noting that he watched the Masters and took away a lot in terms of his mindset. That's something he'll try to use over the next three rounds.

"So, watching some of the best players in the world, and what I'm seeing from a lot of them, especially the younger guys, younger than me -- I'm not too old, but younger than me -- they're so focused in their shot and not worrying about the outcome or what's out there," said Wallace.

"That's what I'm trying to do now. So this might be test number 158 of me with a different round of golf. But taking care my business and my swing is the most important part, and I'm able to do that at the moment because I'm in a good place."

Other contenders

T2. Taylor Pendrith, Alex Noren, Chesson Hadley, Jake Knapp, Davis Riley (-7) T7. Alex Smalley, Hayden Buckley, Kelly Kraft (-6) T14. Justin Lower, Keith Mitchell, Jason Day (-5)

Day is a massive name among the current contenders. As a major champion, as well as the reigning winner of this very tournament, he has to be considered one of the handful of favorites going into the next three days. His day started hot with three birdies in his first five holes and mostly continued on the second nine. His big mishap came at the par-5 5th hole (he started on the back nine on the course), where he made a bogey 6 on a hole that was averaging close to 4.5 shots on the day.

Still, he's in good position to win for the first time in just under a year. It was a victory I thought could propel him for the rest of 2023, but Day has just five top 20s since that win at this course last May (albeit all five of them at really good events, including a T2 at the Open Championship).

Day said after his round that his approach play was better than it has been but that he has mixed feelings about having his coach, Chris Como, in town (Como lives in Dallas) because it can lead to obsessing over his swing from a technical standpoint. He noted that there are probably some other degenerates out there that can relate.

Can confirm: There are.

Spieth pops and then fades?

Jordan Spieth also birdied three of his first five and ran it all the way to 4 under through 13 holes before also making bogey at the par-5 5th hole. His 3-under 68 was decent and will have him in a good enough position going into the next 54 holes. Even more encouraging? The fact that he was solid from tee to green after a stretch of play that has, uh, not been so solid from tee to green.

"Started really nicely and then stalled," Spieth said. "You know, I snuck one on 4 but I thought I would maybe grab one on 3 and then [hole] five in. To play 1-over [on the last five holes] is kind of a bummer. You're looking to play those holes a couple under.

"It's a very gettable golf course," he continued. "Obviously very wet, but I just played the easy holes poorly; played the par-5s 1 over. That was kind of the story of the day. The par-5s you kind of need to be two-and-a-half-under out here each day. I'll have to make that back up."

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Alex Noren: 8-1
  • Matt Wallace: 16-1
  • Jason Day: 16-1
  • Jake Knapp: 16-1
  • Ben An: 16-1
  • Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
  • Stephan Jaeger: 18-1
  • Min Woo Lee: 18-1

This is a board that is somewhat untouchable for me, but if I had to make a pick here I kind of like Wallace at 16-1. That's a nice number for somebody with the outright lead who didn't do it all with the putter. I like that better than everybody else shorter than 25-1. Keith Mitchell is intriguing at 25-1, and Si Woo Kim is interesting at 35-1.
