travel norte lisboa

In recent years, the north of Portugal has been getting the attention it deserves. While the city of Porto is the most popular with tourists in Northern Portugal, there is much to explore in this region. While colder than Central and Southern Portugal, it still offers mild temperatures, sunny days, and oftentimes, more affordable prices.

Our 10 Day Northern Portugal Itinerary allows you to explore the north of Portugal, stopping at the best spots. Your trip begins at Porto airport, where you land. We advise you to rent a car here, which you can return at the end of your trip.

While public transport between cities like Porto and Lisbon works well, this isn’t the case for all regions of Portugal, including certain cities in the north of Portugal.

Day 1, 2 & 3 : Porto

Your 10 day itinerary in the north of Portugal needs to start in Porto, a 20-minute drive from Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport. Porto lies along the Douro river and is known for its Port wine and “francesinhas.” Porto features two beautiful bridges along the river that separate it from Vila Nova de Gaia, another city worth visiting. Porto’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, features multiple historic buildings, gardens, museums, and delicious restaurants.

Braga is known as the “Rome of Portugal” because of its more than 30 churches, each of which has their own beauty and uniqueness. Braga also features numerous shopping streets, beautiful Baroque mansions, and a lively nightlife due to a large number of students.

Day 7: Geres

Peneda-Geres National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, covering over 700 km2 of protected land with stunning mountain trails, river beaches, and historical villages such as Geres.

Although there are plenty of tours , we recommend driving for more flexibility. Arrive at the park early to enjoy your full day here and book a place to spend the night.

Start the morning with a hiking trail. One of our favorite trails is the Sao Bento trail (PR7 PBR), a 10-kilometer hike that takes around four hours. The hike stretches along the south-eastern cliffs of the Caldo river and you will get to discover interesting religious sites such as the Basilica of St. Benedict, Portugal’s second-largest sanctuary.

For lunch, Taberna da Ti Ana da Eira in Montalegre is one of the most popular restaurants in the region. The dishes are produced from regional products in the village and the restaurant has large windows offering 360 views of the Paradela reservoir.

Peneda-Geres National park boasts plenty of natural lagoons. We recommend the Poco Azul, a lagoon with crystal clear waters. However, to get here, you must hike an 8-kilometer trail.

If you are too exhausted from the morning hike, head to Arado Lagoa, which you can reach by car. The lagoon is formed by stunning waterfalls.

Day 8 & 9: Douro Valley

Any trip to the north of Portugal must include a stop in the Douro Valley . A World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the valley is a cultural landscape of vineyards where Douro wines  are grown and produced. Along with delicious wine, the views are striking and a once in a lifetime experience.

We recommend either driving yourself or booking a driver to take you to selected vineyards. Our favorite vineyards to visit are Quinta da Roêda (Pinhão), Quinta do Crasto (Sabrosa), and Quinta do Seixo (Valença do Douro).

If you want everything taken care of, book a Douro vineyard “hopping” tour or even this river cruise  from Porto where you will get to stop at various wineries for tastings, with lunch included.

NORTE GUESTHOUSE $46 ($̶5̶5̶) - Updated 2024 Prices & Guest house Reviews - Lisbon, Portugal

Mapping Megan

Authored by Jorge & Cláudia Bastos

Portugal has been at the center of world tourism for a while now, particularly Algarve, Lisbon, and Porto. And while these destinations are undoubtedly worth visiting, it’s Northern Portugal that largely remains an unknown gem.

Portugal is the perfect destination for a road trip, and the country’s north is one of the most authentic regions, often completely forgotten by international tourists.  So this road trip itinerary will take you through undiscovered parts of the country.

You’ll pick up your car rental in Portugal in Porto (check rentals on Auto Jardim ), the gateway to (and biggest city in) the north (you’ll also end in Porto).

This itinerary will take you to UNESCO Heritage sites, beaches and the often forgotten interior. You’ll also discover what is arguably the country’s best food!

➤ Peso da régua – Porto

Start in Porto

Recommended: 2 days.

Despite being the biggest city in the north, Porto’s city center is relatively small. You can easily walk and use public transportation for longer trips within Porto, including to/from the airport.

This means you don’t need a car in Porto, so you should rent it only after visiting Porto. Decide how many days you want to spend here, and then pick up a car at the end.

Porto’s historical center is a UNESCO heritage site, which includes two of the most famous sites: Ribeira and D. Luis Bridge. Ribeira is Porto’s riverside area, arguably the city’s most beautiful district.

Crossing the river Douro is D. Luis Bridge, a beautiful iron bridge that also serves as one of the best lookouts in Porto. You have so many historical attractions that you will need at least 2 days to visit the city. The top historic attractions you must visit include:

Things to do in Porto

➤ Clerigos Tower and Church – a 76 meters high baroque tower that you can climb.

➤ Stock Market Palace – palace where the old Porto’s stock exchange was that has some beautiful rooms, particularly the famous Arab room.

➤ Lello bookshop – One the most beautiful bookshops in the world and an inspiration for Harry Potter’s books.

➤ Port wine cellars in Gaia – You can do a port wine tasting and tour through the cellars.

Porto – Guimarães

Recommended: 1 day.

From Porto to Guimarães is a very quick drive, less than one hour on the highway. If you want to really enjoy Guimarães, we advise you to spend a full day there.

Guimarães historic center is also a World Heritage Site (since 2001), but more than that, it’s the birthplace of Portugal and our first capital city.

The old town is well preserved and filled with beautiful squares, cobbled streets, quaint alleys, and churches. Furthermore, in Guimarães you can also visit the majestic castle and the wonderful Palace of the Dukes , an XV century manor house.

Very close to Guimarães is the Penha Sanctuary which you can easily visit by car. From there you have a beautiful view of the city and it’s a great place to have a picnic and explore the huge granitic rocks and caves.

Image: Turismo En Portugal / CC BY 2.0 / Flickr

Guimarães – Braga

After visiting Guimarães we suggest you continue north to Braga; the biggest city north of Porto, and a very lively one. It’s a very short drive, only 30 minutes.

Braga is another historic town ; it was the capital of Gallaecia during the Roman times. Once here we suggest you park the car, walk around the old town and explore its historic center to visit the many churches, admire the houses and historical buildings.

Within Braga, you really have to visit the Cathedral , which is the oldest in Portugal and it’s usually called the “treasure museum”. On the outskirts of Braga, there are two important sanctuaries, Bom Jesus and Sameiro Sanctuary .

Both sanctuaries offer great views to the city and surroundings. They are somewhat similar to each other, so if you do have enough time, visit both, but if you don’t, Bom Jesus has better views.

Image: Feliciano Guimarães / CC BY 2.0 / Flickr

 Braga – Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo is located on the mouth of Lima River, close to several beautiful beaches. The whole coast between Viana do Castelo and Caminha further north is gorgeous, but it’s quite cold! You need to be brave to dive in there.

The drive from Braga is around an hour, and once there, you have two nice attractions, the Santa Luzia Basilica with its panoramic views (yes, there are a lot of religious attractions located on mountaintops in this region), and the Gil Eanes , a former hospital ship converted into a museum.

The Gil Eanes may sound like a bit of a weird tourist attraction, but it’s really interesting.

Viana do Castelo – Peneda Gerês National Park

Recommended: 2 days.

From Viana do Castelo to Peneda Geres is only about one hour, which means you can do the trip early in the morning and still have the full day to explore Geres . You can do this as a day trip if you wanted to stay based in Viana do Castelo.

Geres is the only National Park in Portugal and it’s truly a natural wonderland. The park is full of lakes (natural and manmade), mountains, trails, waterfalls, lookouts, and even historic villages and imposing castles.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that the park is quite big and every part of the park has plenty of things to see and do! Those who love nature should spend (at least) 2 days (and one night) in the park.

Some of our favorite spots in Geres include:

Things to do in Geres

➤ Castro Laboreiro – it’s further north but the castle is rather unique and very fun to visit.

➤ Lindoso – a village with a well-preserved castle and

➤ Caniçada Dam – great spot on summer days to have a swim and other water-related activities. Probably the best place to find a hotel/hostel.

➤ Mata de Albergaria – the heart of the park and probably the whole reason why the park was created.

➤ Tahiti falls – beautiful waterfall where you can swim in the lake.

➤ Pedra Bela lookout – in our opinion the most beautiful lookout in park

➤ Pitões de Junias – a somewhat forgotten village which hosts both an impressive waterfall and the ruins of an old XI century monastery.

Gerês National Park – Chaves

After crossing Geres National park and continuing further east to the interior of Portugal you’ll find the old frontier town of Chaves. It’s roughly an hour from the Eastern edge of the national park.

Besides being a frontier town, Chaves was the first defense against invaders and the old castle, tower and wall are good tourist attractions. Although our favorite part of Chaves is the wonderful riverside and the ancient Roman bridge, which is still used as a pedestrian bridge today.

Chaves is also known for its thermal baths. These baths are known since Roman times and are now being revitalized. The whole region around Chaves has several hotels, Spas and Thermal baths for you to choose from.

Image: Vitor Oliveira / CC BY-SA 2.0 / Flickr

Chaves –  Miranda do Douro

After visiting Chaves we are heading to Miranda do Douro! This is probably the longest drive you’ll do as Miranda do Douro is right on the edge of Portugal. It should take you between 2.5 to 3 hours.

If you feel this is too long, we suggest you make a stopover in Bragança. This is roughly half way; about an hour and a half from Chaves, and an hour from Miranda do Douro.

Miranda do Douro is a typical frontier, fortified town, with some peculiarities, like the cathedral and the ruined castle. It’s also the gateway to Douro international natural park, an area where Douro river is astonishing with a huge natural wall forming an impressive gorge.

This is also the place for meat lovers eat the famous “posta mirandesa”, an extremely tasty and large veal steak.

Miranda do Douro – Foz Côa

Recommended: detour en route to porto.

After Miranda do Douro, head south, along the Douro river enjoying the views and this hidden side of Portugal. Foz Côa is on the south rim of Douro River, on the mouth of Côa River, an hour and a half away.

Foz Côa’s story is an interesting one. About 20 years ago while doing an environmental study for the construction of a Dam in the Côa River, the researchers discovered an astonishing collection of Palaeolithic art.

This collection soon became famous, and the dam had to be canceled so that the whole region could be enlisted by UNESCO as a World Heritage site! Can visit today and enjoy the rock-carved images with thousands of years of history.

Image: Vitor Oliveira / CC BY-2.0 / Flickr

Foz Côa – Douro Valley

Recommended: detour en route to porto.

After detouring to the Côa valley to see the Paleolithic paintings, you should continue driving through the Douro valley. You are now driving east, starting your return to Porto.

This is the high Douro Valley, where most of the Port wine is produced. The wine vineyards built on the hills surrounding the river create an unforgettable setting.

These vineyards have huge cultural value and there’s archaeological evidence for winemaking in the region. Yet, it was only in the 16th and and 17th century that the now famous fortified port wine started to be produced and exported.

The whole Douro valley is also listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, and this is a great region to drive through purely to enjoy the scenic views. We do encourage you to stop a few times. Pinhão, Peso da Régua, and São Xisto are some of the spots you should keep in mind.

Douro Valley – Amarante

You are now almost back to Porto, but still have time for one last, small detour, Amarante.

Amarante is located on the banks of Tâmega River, about 60 km from Porto. This picturesque village grew around a narrow part of the Tâmega where the Saint Gonçalo bridge was built as well as the wonderful church right next to it.

Amarante has a medieval charm, with its balconied houses and small cobbled alleys. The park by the river and close to the bridge give it the final touch.

This another great place to park your car and discover by foot, and while doing so, don’t forget to try the local conventual pastry. Note: they are very sweet, like most of the Portuguese pastry!

Image: Ana Matias / CC O / Flickr

Return to Porto

From Amarante, you may return to Porto and return your car.

When we plan road trips like this, we usually leave exploring the big destination until to the end. In this case it would mean not visiting Porto when you arrive but leave it to the last two days.

It’s up to you really, either way, you’ll have a great time traveling in Portugal!

When it comes to Lisbon, it's safe to say the secret's out. The coastal capital sees 4.5 million annual visitors, most of whom flock to the city for its fado music, historic ruins, winding old town, trams, not to mention those pasteis de nata. And that's not all: More new hotels and restaurants are on the way, and the city's architectural energy is drawing a new creative class, which means that soon—hard as it may be to believe—there will be even more reasons to visit. Lisbon to Nazare: See the Huge Waves at Praia do Norte

travel norte lisboa

BY JARED DILLINGHAM

HOW TO GET FROM LISBON TO NAZARE, PORTUGAL

It’s very easy to get from Lisbon to Nazare, to visit its famous beach: Praia do Norte.

Renting a car and driving to the town on Portugal’s central coast is the best option.  Nazare is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Lisbon.

Praia do Norte is known for its giant waves that attract surfers from around the world.  In fact, Nazare holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, with a height of 80 feet!

As a side note, the correct spelling of Nazaré has the accent on the “e,” but American keyboards don’t have that as an option during a quick search.  So … I’ll be using the spelling of the city that’s more apt to come up in searches from the United States.  I apologize for the inconsistency!

Hertz, Sixt, and other rental companies have smaller locations in a cluster in the city center.   Discover Cars makes it easy to search them all at once time.

Here are a few tips about renting a car in Lisbon for a day trip to Nazare:

  • You can rent the car downtown and return it at the airport for no extra fee (since the airport return area is open 24/7).
  • Make sure to ask for an automatic transmission (if that’s what you prefer) since most rentals will be manual.
  • You’ll pass through toll booths, so get a rental with a device that allows you to pass through without stopping. You’ll simply pay the tolls later.

Also, reserve your rental car in Lisbon in advance and you’ll pay far less.  Due to a change in our itinerary, we reserved our Nissan Juke the morning of our day trip to Nazare, and rather than $50, it cost $170 for the day.

What to do in Nazare, at Praia do Norte

The big draw in Nazare is Praia do Norte, the famous beach with some of the biggest (if not the biggest) waves in the world.

Nazare itself is a pretty sizable beach town with plenty of things to do on a day trip from Lisbon.

If you wander down toward the fort (which most do) remember that there are no bathrooms at all along the hike.

The Beaches in Nazare

There are several named beaches in Nazare, but the coastline is essentially broken in half by the land that juts out into the sea, where the old fort is.

While they share the same stretch of Portugal’s coast, these two sections of beach are very different in a number of ways.

Praia do Norte

This is the beach in Nazare with much larger waves, north of the fort.

You can access Praia do Norte by several paths, including a fairly steep, dirt trail down from the fort overlook.

Praia do Norte in Nazare Portugal

The beach itself is nice and clean, with interestingly grainy sand.  There are signs warning of the dangers of swimming here.  You’ll find more space to spread out here, compared to the more crowded beaches south of the fort.

Praia do Norte sandy beach in Nazare

You won’t find much in the way of food or services here. It’s a much quieter beach experience than the more populated Praia da Nazare.

Praia da Nazare

The ocean water at Praia da Nazare is much calmer, so it’s more popular for sunbathers and families to visit. This is where you’d want to head to swim in the ocean (unless you’re a pro surfer).

Nazare beach on a day trip from Lisbon

The ocean floor off the coast (Nazare Canyon) creates very smooth ocean conditions and small waves on this beach, on the southern side of Nazare.

You’ll find beach clubs and free public beaches, and several restaurants along the coast.

Take a Tuk-tuk

If all the walking is too much, or the hills are too steep, you can jump in one of the tuk-tuks that are all over town.

Nazare Tuktuk

They’re primarily there to get you down to the ancient fort, which is the present-day popular viewing platform for the big waves and surf competitions at Praia do Norte.

Nazare’s Viewpoint: Fort de São Miguel Arcanjo

Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, also known as the Fort of Saint Michael the Archangel, is a historical fortress located above the beach (Praia do Norte).

Lisbon to Nazare viewpoint

From its location, you can see the impact of the underwater canyon off the coast.  It produces large waves to the north, and much calmer water to the south.  For 2 Euros, you can go inside the fort, climb around and check out the views of Nazare’s beaches and the ocean waves.

While it’s primarily a viewpoint for the waves and surf competitions these days, it played a role in defending the coastal region throughout history.

Nazare’s fort dates back to the 16th century, and was constructed during the reign of King Manuel in 1577. Its primary purpose was to defend Nazare against pirate attacks and protect the town from maritime threats.

The fort was equipped with canons, and had thick walls to withstand attacks. It served as a watchtower, providing a line of sight for spotting approaching ships.

Surfing Museum

Unexpectedly, Nazare’s fort contains a pretty extensive collection of surfing memorabilia. You’ll also find a lot of scientific information about the natural forces behind the giant waves.

Some of the ancient rooms now hold the surfboards of professionals who’ve conquered Nazare’s waves.  Several have written notes and anecdotes about the waves here, and how they’re different from anywhere else.

The Rocky Caves

You can hike the dirt path down below Nazare’s fort to the beach on the north side.  It’s a steep climb at times, but most people will be able to do it.

At low tide, you’ll find caves in the rocks to explore.  Just beware of the waves as the tide starts to rise!

The adjacent beach is Praia do Norte.

Food in Nazare

At the top of the road that leads down the fort and viewpoint, you’ll find plenty of food options.

Arimar is a restaurant offering floor-to-ceiling window views of the ocean.

For something less-formal, there are a number of food trucks and mobile bars offering meals, snacks, and drinks.

Nazare Food

You’re also bound to find local families selling nuts and cookies and other Portuguese snacks in the plazas around Nazare.

The plazas in Nazare are lined with typical souvenir shops.  You’ll also find vendors in trucks selling surfing-specific shirts and gear down closer to the water.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré (Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré)

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, or in Portuguese, Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, is a renowned Catholic pilgrimage site in Nazare, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Church in Nazare, a day trip from Lisbon

The sanctuary’s origins trace back to a miraculous event that occurred in the 12th century. Legend has it that a knight named Dom Fuas Roupinho was hunting in the area when his horse nearly plunged off a cliff. In a moment of desperation, he called upon the Virgin Mary for help, and she saved him. As a result, a small chapel was built on the spot in gratitude, eventually growing into the sanctuary we see today.

It draws pilgrims from around the world.  You’re likely to see tour buses whenever you visit, but each year on September 8th, thousands come for processions and masses.

This is a marble and steel statue, 20 feet tall, built in 2016.

It’s part of the legend from the 12th Century involving the knight who fell off the cliff.  After asking the Virgin Mary for help, the horse stuck its legs down off the cliff, saving the knight’s life.

I believe the sculptor created this anthropomorphic statue to represent the old story involving the knight hunting for deer, and Nazare’s modern claim to fame as a surfing Mecca.

The Massive Waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte

Nazare’s Praia do Norte (North Beach) gained global recognition for its massive waves.

These waves are formed due to the underwater Nazaré Canyon, which channels and amplifies the swells, creating some of the largest surfable waves on the planet.

One of the biggest waves at Nazare

In fact, Nazare holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, with a height of approximately 24.38 meters (80 feet), ridden by the Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa in 2017.

Why are the waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte so big?

Off-shore, the underwater Nazare Canyon channels and amplifies the swells.

The canyon reaches depths of more than 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). As waves approach the coast, they encounter this underwater topography, which causes the wave energy to concentrate and amplify. The shape and orientation of the canyon channel the incoming swells, resulting in the formation of massive waves.

Another important factor is the convergence of swells from the Atlantic Ocean.

Nazare is uniquely positioned to receive swells generated by storms in the North Atlantic. When these powerful swells travel across the ocean and reach the shallow waters near the coast, they undergo a process called shoaling. As the depth decreases, the energy of the swells is compressed, causing the waves to increase in height and steepness.

You can learn about all of it inside the fort!

When are the big waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte?

The largest waves at Nazare are typically observed during the winter months, particularly between the months of October and February. This is when the combination of powerful Atlantic storms and the unique underwater Nazare Canyon results in the formation of exceptionally large waves.

The specific timing and size of the waves can vary depending on various factors, including weather patterns, swell direction, and tidal influences. To accurately determine the biggest waves at Nazare, it is recommended to monitor surf reports, local forecasts, and updates from professional surfers and oceanographers who closely follow the wave conditions in the area.

How to see the giant waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte

It’s unpredictable, and if you’re really committed to witnessing the famous Nazare waves, you should plan to stay in the area for several weeks.  Keep monitoring forecasts and webcams, from November through February for your best chances.

The annual WSL Nazaré Big Wave Challenge surfing event is every year during the winter.  The exact dates aren’t chosen or confirmed until 48-hours before the start of the competition.

A surfer died surfing the waves at Nazaré

The 2023 surfing season began with tragedy at Nazare. The famous Brazilian surfer Márcio Freire died after a fall while being towed into a wave.  Rescuers pulled him to shore, but couldn’t revive him.

Tourists have also been pulled from shore by the waves.

Here are some of the safety measures typically in place:

  • Trained lifeguards are often present on the beaches in Nazare, especially during the peak tourist season.
  • Beaches in Nazare usually have clear signage that alerts visitors to the potential risks and dangers associated with the surf conditions.
  • In some areas, there may be safety barriers or buoys installed to mark safe swimming zones and prevent swimmers from venturing into hazardous areas with strong currents or dangerous surf conditions.
  • Local authorities and beach patrols often monitor the beaches to ensure compliance with safety rules, educate visitors about potential risks, and intervene if necessary to enforce safety measures.

Where are the biggest waves in the world?

The biggest wave ever surfed was in Nazare, Portugal.  Here are the other spots to find the biggest waves in the world:

  • Jaws (Peahi), Maui, Hawaii : Located on the north shore of Maui, Jaws is renowned for its massive, powerful waves that can reach heights of up to 60 feet (18 meters).
  • Teahupo’o, Tahiti: Teahupo’o, Tahiti , French Polynesia, is known for its hollow and powerful waves that break over a shallow coral reef.

Wrap: Is Nazare, Portugal, Worth Visiting?

Admittedly, Nazare wasn’t on my original list of day trips from Lisbon. We only ended up there toward the end because we had some extra time. But I’m glad we did!

I’m not a surfer, but I found the information about Nazare Canyon and the waves really fascinating. The town itself is very pretty, too.

During the summer, I could easily spend a day lounging on the beaches. If you’re just looking to check out the fort and the waves and move on, I’d combine a day trip to Nazare with a stop at nearby Obidos!

Norte – region of ancient vineyards and urban flair

Norte , Portugal ’s dynamic northern region, is a blend of rich heritage and modern vibrancy. Porto, its largest city, showcases a stunning riverside charm and a world-famous wine legacy. Beyond urban allure, Norte boasts the historical splendour of Braga and Guimarães, alongside the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. A lesser-known fact: Norte is home to the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. Diverse landscapes range from rugged coastal stretches to serene mountain ranges. What truly distinguishes Norte is its blend of tradition and innovation; centuries-old traditions stand strong, yet the region pulses with contemporary energy, evident in its flourishing arts scene and gastronomic delights.
