Frequently asked questions

Fares and tickets, can i use my dayticket on trams.

DAYtickets, LATEtickets and Family DAYtickets can be used on Edinburgh Trams, between Newhaven and Ingliston Park & Ride only, as well as Lothian Buses day services. A Network DAYticket is valid for travel to or from Edinburgh Airport.

How do I buy a ticket?

We have a pre-purchase policy, so all tickets, smartcards and mtickets have to be purchased, validated or activated before you board the tram. We offer various ways to travel to suit all needs:

  • ticket machines on the platforms: pay by coins or card
  • mobile app : pre-purchase your tickets and activate before you board
  • website : pre-purchase your tickets and display your ticket on your phone

We also offer two types of passes both available through our TravelHubs

  • citysmart card

If you do not purchase, validate or activate before you board the tram, you will have to pay the £10 On-board fare to the Ticketing Services Assistant.

Can I make multiple journeys on one ticket?

If you need to jump on-and-off you might want to consider a DAYticket or one of our multi-day tram tickets.

Journeys using single and return tickets cannot be broken. Once you step off the tram, your journey is considered completed and you will need to buy another ticket to continue.

Do you offer discounts for seniors?

If you have a Scottish National Entitlement Card (also known as a Saltire card) issued by the City of Edinburgh Council, you are entitled to free travel on the tram. The same applies to cards from any local authority indicating visual impairment. However cards issued by other local authorities are not valid on the tram.

Do you offer discounts for children?

Child tickets are available for customers aged 5-15 inclusive. Up to two infants travel free of charge per fare paying customer.

Do you offer discounts for students?

Some students are entitled to a discounted Ridacard (see here for conditions) but otherwise there are no students rates available.

How do I validate my smartcard?

Keep an eye out for the validators on our platform, the grey and white machines with a pink square. All that you have to do is hold your card up against that square until a green tick appears on the screen above.

Do you offer discounts for groups?

If you are a group of 20 or more, a corporate group of 10 or more or a school group, we are likely to offer discount. Please contact our Customer Relations team.

What do I do if the ticket machine is out of service?

You can use any ticket machine, on any side of a platform, to get a ticket to your destination. However, if none of the ticket machines are working or you have any issues when purchasing your ticket, please get in touch through the green help point on the platform (it is staffed 24/7) and we will find a solution for you.

Is daily contactless capping available on trams?

While you can purchase tickets using contactless payments, we do not yet offer a capping system similar to Lothian Buses or Transport for London. If you think you will be using both tram and bus, we would recommend you purchase a paper DAYticket at the start of the day.

Flight Status Info

As an air traveler, it is important to stay updated on the status of your flight. Fortunately, there are several ways to get flight status information at Edinburgh Airport.

These displays provide real-time updates on flight departures, arrivals, delays, and gate information. Simply find the FIDS display located near your departure gate or check-in area to get the latest information on your flight.

Another convenient way to stay updated on your flight status is by downloading the mobile app of your airline. Most airlines offer mobile apps that allow passengers to check their flight status, receive alerts about departure delays, cancellations, or gate changes, and even check-in for their flight. You can also sign up for text, email, or push notifications to receive updates on your flight status directly to your mobile device.

Passengers can check the status of their flight departure at Edinburgh Airport by visiting the flight departures page on ifly.com, which provides real-time updates on flight departures, delays, and gate information.

Helpful Tips

When to arrive.

It is recommended to arrive at Edinburgh Airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure time for domestic flights and three hours before international flights. This will give you enough time to check in, drop off your luggage, and go through security. The busiest times at the airport are during the morning and evening rush hours, so it is best to avoid these times if possible.

Getting to the Airport

Edinburgh Airport is easily accessible by car, bus, and tram. If you are driving, there are several parking options available, including short-term and long-term parking. The airport is also well-served by public transportation, with several bus routes and a tram line connecting the airport to the city center and surrounding areas. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available.

Getting Oriented

To get oriented at EDI, you can use the interactive airport maps available on iFly.com. These maps allow you to view the airport layout, locate shops and restaurants, and find your gate. You can also download the airport's official app, which provides real-time flight information, directions, and other useful features.

Avoiding Delays

To avoid delays at EDI Airport, make sure to arrive early and allow enough time for check-in and security. Be sure to check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport, and sign up for flight alerts to receive updates on any delays or cancellations. What to expect when you visit our TravelHub

As we gradually re-open our TravelHubs we are expecting that they will be busy, as people start to return to work and more people begin to make necessary journeys.

To begin with we will be open to Ridacard customers only, Monday to Saturday at Waverley Bridge and Shandwick Place from 0830-1730 hours.

Before you visit us, please read our advice below:

  • We can only have a limited number of customers in the TravelHub at any one time. When necessary we will limit the flow of people coming into our TravelHubs to ensure that they don’t become too congested.
  • You may have to queue before you can enter the TravelHub. Physical distancing markers will be placed outside to help you distance yourself from other customers – please maintain a safe physical distance at all times. Remember to bring an umbrella as you might have to stand outside if the maximum number of customers are being served inside the Hub.
  • A member of our team will be on hand to greet you and ask you how we can assist with your visit to the TravelHub today. We may be able to answer your query on our doorstep and there will be no need to enter the TravelHub.
  • Our Network timetable information is available through our app or Traveline Scotland .  No printed timetables are available at this time.

If you are looking to either restart or set up a new direct debit, please visit the TravelHub where our team can help you complete an application form, take your photograph and issue you with your new Ridacard. If you can, please download our application form and complete this prior to your visit. If you have previously held a Ridacard with us, please return this to the TravelHub when you visit.

  • If you have an Annual, 9-month, weekly or 4 weekly Advance Purchase Ridacard – we will extend the validity of these tickets for Ridacards with valid products which customers have not used.
  • Please observe all signage and follow the guidance in our TravelHub.

  • A hand sanitising station will be available for use before you enter the TravelHub. We recommend washing or sanitising your hands thoroughly before and after you visit us at the TravelHub.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I’m returning to work – how can I get a new direct debit Ridacard?

Did you know we have various ticketing options available? Please take a look and see if direct debit still meets your needs.

If you are looking to set up an annual, weekly or 4-weekly Advance Purchase Ridacard, please visit our TravelHub during opening hours where our team will be happy to help.

I’m still paying for my Direct Debit subscription because I need to travel, but the Ridacard has expired – how can I get this renewed?

Please visit a TravelHub during opening hours where our team will be happy to help.

I’ve lost my Ridacard – can I get a replacement?

If you pop in to a TravelHub during opening hours, our team will be happy to assist you.

I have a Direct Debit Ridacard – can I pause this if I need to stay at home (self-isolate) or work remotely?

We do not have the capability to pause or suspend our Direct Debit Ridacard product but you may cancel your card and subscription.

If you wish to cancel your direct debit Ridacard, please email [email protected] with a note of your Unique Reference Number (6-digit number on the front of your Ridacard, to the left of your photograph), your Ridacard number (the 8-digit number beneath the word “Ridacard”), your name, address and contact telephone number.

Emails to this inbox will be processed as soon as we can, but you will not receive a response. Any personal details you supply will only be used to identify your account, process your request and contact you if necessary regarding this.

If you have requested cancellation of your direct debit Ridacard, then your card and subscription will be cancelled as soon as is possible – understandably, our volumes for Ridacard cancellations are much higher than usual. For this reason, we also recommend that you cancel the Direct Debit instruction with your bank.

Given the high volume of requests, refunds of associated credit balances are also taking us longer than we would expect to process. We are also reliant on external parties for direct debit accounts and, in some cases, it is taking us up to 30 days to process these requests. Refunds are calculated as the time in days between you telling us you want to cancel your subscription, and the valid to date which was generated by your last successful payment. Once processed, refunds will be credited directly to the originating bank account where available, or otherwise will be made by cheque and posted.

I have an Annual, 9-month, weekly or 4-weekly Advance Purchase Ridacard – what happens to the travel I’ve paid for but cannot use?

We will make sure that you can use the travel that you’ve paid for.

For Ridacards with valid products which customers have not used, Lothian will extend the validity of these tickets. This extension will be equal to the difference in days between either the 24th of March or the last usage of the ticket thereafter; and either the date you wish to start travelling on our services again, or the expiry of the product on the card – whichever is earlier.

To claim the extension, customers should take their Ridacard to a Lothian TravelHub , where our team can help you.

I have m-tickets which have expired – can I get a refund?

M-tickets are digital products which we are able to manage remotely. If you have any m-tickets which have expired on or after 23rd March 2020 owing to the 180-day validity, please drop us an email with the details and we can reinstate these tickets.

The easiest way to do this is within the app which will allow us to more easily locate your account. From the sidebar menu, go to “Contact”, followed by “Contact us by email”.

I have a question about my contactless payments?

If you want to query any travel or payments made within the last 7 days, please check our customer portal at https://abt.cloudfare.co.uk/

At the earliest, payment for journeys will appear on your bank statement the day after you’ve travelled – this will be later if you’ve travelled over the weekend, or if the bus you travelled on has been offline. Viewing your journey and payment history using our customer portal and checking this against your bank statement is the quickest and best way to see how you’ve been charged for any journeys you’ve made.

Still have questions? Please take a look at our comprehensive FAQs, which cover almost every aspect of our contactless payment scheme – https://www.lothianbuses.com/contactless-capping-faqs/

I need to renew my National Entitlement Card?

Following the temporary suspension of card production, and in line with safe physical distancing measures, limited card production for National Entitlement Cards has recommenced from Monday 1 June.

Requests for replacements and renewals from existing cardholders are being processed.

Local Authorities are now accepting requests for renewals and replacements for lost, stolen or broken cards. Priority is being given to those in the over 60’s and disabled person’s Concessionary Travel Schemes. More information and advice on the national scheme can be found here on Transport Scotland’s website: https://www.transport.gov.scot/concessionary-travel/national-entitlement-card-bus-pass-production-suspended/

TravelPerk opens Edinburgh office, creating jobs and betting on the city as a business travel hub

  • TravelPerk will open a new Edinburgh office this week, creating more than 30 jobs this year and more in 2023
  • The new office makes Edinburgh TravelPerk’s third hub in the UK and represents a bet on Edinburgh as a major tech hub and business travel centre for the UK in 2022 and beyond
  • TravelPerk continues to grow rapidly across the UK following the acquisition of Click Travel last year

Barcelona and Edinburgh, Wednesday 8th June: TravelPerk , the largest global travel management platform, has today announced the opening of its new office in Edinburgh this week, making the city its third hub in the UK alongside London and Birmingham.

10 people are already working in Scotland but with the opening of the new TravelPerk hub, the company is aiming to add hundreds of jobs to the city over the coming years, beginning with an additional 30 employees before the end of 2022. The hub will be focused on developing a centre of excellence for software engineering asTravelPerk has Scotland firmly in its sights as a major tech hub. The recent decentralisation of workers from London and other major hubs has seen an uplift in workers moving to Edinburgh.

TravelPerk is committed to its ongoing growth in Edinburgh as a major business travel hub. Edinburgh Airport is Scotland’s busiest airport, with over 14 million passengers coming through each year. The airport serves 37 airlines that fly to over 150 destinations worldwide. Often referred to as “the place where Scotland meets the world”, the airport represents a portal to international business for companies based in the country.

According to TravelPerk’s data, business travel in Scotland currently sits at ~95% of pre-pandemic levels, with Edinburgh Airport itself seeing a +5% rate of growth as compared to 2020 Q1. TravelPerk data also shows that Edinburgh is seeing a quicker rate of recovery than other major capital cities such as London, Berlin or Madrid.

TravelPerk has recently achieved major milestones growing its expansion in the UK market by the acquisition of Click Travel , the UK’s largest business travel provider, making TravelPerk the biggest platform globally. TravelPerk also recently raised $115 million in an extension of its Series D funding round making the company a unicorn.

Vicki Williams, UK Country Manager at TravelPerk, said:

"The pandemic has changed travel patterns and Edinburgh has benefited from that. Opening a hub in the city was the obvious decision to fuel TravelPerk’s hypergrowth trajectory, and further showcases our clear commitment and belief in the city as a key business travel hub in the UK. Our data backs this up, showing a strong travel recovery in Edinburgh compared with other European capitals.

“With this new office, we are fulfilling our mission to create in-person connections by bringing people together sustainably and enjoyably in real life. This office will allow us to bring in some of the best talent to help us grow and scale our business worldwide.”

Ross Mcnairn, CPTO at TravelPerk, said:

“Edinburgh has warmly nurtured multiple unicorns in the past so we feel in good company.

It’s a city with a phenomenally talented workforce, superb universities and an exceptional quality of life. Combine that with the growing political intent to make the city more appealing to technology companies and Edinburgh was a natural home for our next engineering hub.”

Edinburgh Airport issues important update to passengers on 100ml liquid rule

Edinburgh Airport has updated customers regarding the 100ml liquid rule at security.

Airports across the UK are being given more time to install new scanners that will see the end of the 100ml liquid rule.

The government announced it has granted extensions to several large UK airports unable to meet its June 1 deadline to fully install new scanning technology.

The new scanners produce more detailed images, meaning passengers can be allowed to pass through airport security with containers holding up to two litres of liquid in their hand luggage.

Edinburgh Airport has welcomed the extension and has told customers that they will be in place in the coming weeks and months.

However, passengers should follow the 100ml rules and remove large electricals from their carry-on luggage until further notice.

Taking to social media, the airport said: "This is a welcome announcement that will help provide clarity for passengers travelling through Edinburgh Airport this summer.

"Although work is currently ongoing to install the new scanners and a number will be in place in the coming weeks and months, passengers should continue to follow the 100ml rules and remove large electricals from their bags until we announce otherwise. Following the already known and rehearsed rules will allow everyone to move through the security process as quickly and safely as possible."

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “These cutting-edge scanners will make air travel safer and easier for passengers by strengthening security even further.

“The UK is leading the world with its rollout of this technology, but it’s important we give those airports yet to meet the deadline a second chance to get the job done.

“Until they do, passengers should continue to check before travelling.”

Karen Dee, chief executive of trade body the Airport Operators Association, said: “Airports are making excellent progress in delivering these multi-million-pound investment programmes, which will ensure the UK remains at the forefront of aviation security in the years ahead.

“As with any programme of this complexity, there are significant challenges, and we are happy the Government has recognised these and agreed to extend timeframes for delivery where necessary.

“By adopting this approach, airports can ensure that they are ready to welcome passengers over the upcoming holiday periods and that their journeys are safe, secure and smooth as we make this transition.”

Naomi Leach, deputy editor of Which? Travel, said: “Passengers should have been looking forward to a more efficient security process at the UK’s biggest airports this summer. Instead, with different rules and processes now likely to apply at different airports, the ensuing confusion could lead to further delays.

“It’s imperative that these changes are made as quickly as possible and that the rules at different airports are communicated clearly to passengers in the meantime. Those airports that have failed to install the scanners in time should not increase passenger fees this year – this would be impossible to justify when this key improvement to the passenger experience has not been made.”

Airport security restrictions for liquids were introduced in 2006 following a foiled terror plot to blow up planes flying from London to the US with homemade liquid bombs.

Travellers failing to adhere to them is one of the biggest causes of delays at airport security checks.

Edinburgh Airport has updated customers regarding the 100ml liquid rule at security.

Europe's Largest LED Check-in Display - Edinburgh Airport

Travel hub transformation takes flight - Europe's Largest LED Check-in Display

A vast digital canvas at the centre of Edinburgh Airport’s multi-million-pound redevelopment project is transforming the check-in hall by quickly and seamlessly delivering important information to travellers. This case study explores the logistics of installing an LED canvas and intuitive AV platforms in a busy transport hub.

Europe's Largest LED Check-in Display

Traditional check-in desks at Edinburgh Airport have been replaced by an 85m visually striking self-check-in LED environment, ensuring wayfinding, flight information and marketing visuals are clearly visible from anywhere in the hall.

As part of a long-term expansion and modernisation plan, Edinburgh Airports Limited (EAL) has completed a multi-million-pound redevelopment of the check-in facility featuring a baggage carousel display spanning the full length of the hall enhanced by innovative self-service technology.

Completed in March 2020 in just over five weeks, the team behind the ambitious project endeavoured to integrate a flexible wayfinding and flight information display solution. From the outset,  nuVIDEO worked with our Midwich team and PSCo (part of the Midwich Group) to ensure everything was in place to facilitate an installation that would be seen by millions of travellers.

“One of the critical considerations in the design of the new check-in facility was to ensure that flight information, wayfinding and emergency information systems would enable passengers to quickly and safely navigate their route through the check-in hall. This was particularly important given the introduction of multiple new self-service check in systems,” says Michael Macneil, sales manager nuVIDEO.

Travellers are welcome to call us to make an appointment.

As a busy service we appreciate being informed of any cancellation or expected late arrival. We may not be able to accommodate delayed arrivals within the same clinic/day. Please see “find a clinic” section for directions and journey planners.

Sustainability

A sustainable future is important to all of us because we all want to know we are caring for our planet, for our friends and family and for the people and things that make up our lives.

We all must play our part.

At Edinburgh Airport, we realise a sustainable future is for the Greater Good and our strategy reflects that by setting out what we are doing for the planet, for our people and for our country.

Aviation is a force for good in Scotland. It's a significant employer and it directly supports tourism, our universities, business and culture, making a major contribution to the economy. And our strategy is about more than just carbon; it's about making our business, Scotland's gateway to the world, sustainable and a social and economic asset that serves future generations. To do that, we have to carefully consider our impact on the environment and act accordingly.

We are all looking to be part of a more sustainable future and we all have a part to play so we think it is right for us to set-out our strategy and the four key pillars within our Greater Good strategy.

Trusted Neighbour

We know we have an impact, good and bad, on our neighbouring communities and it’s important that we continue to strengthen links with our neighbours. We will share the benefits of growth with the communities closest to our airport, and work to mitigate any negative impacts associated with an airport.

How will we do that? By being a good neighbour that collaborates with and supports our local communities, and one that shares our business success with the community via investment and educational programmes. We also want to acknowledge and mitigate our negative impacts on communities and help them understand our operations as much as possible.

Scotland's Best Business

As the place where Scotland meets the world, our airport is a travel hub – both internationally and regionally. We see it as our responsibility to create a business with integrity, working with our People, Passengers and trusted Partners to deliver a workplace we are proud of.

To achieve this, we will strive to make Edinburgh Airport one of the best places to work in Scotland by providing quality jobs and skills and training opportunities for all. We will be resilient to effects of climate change and be flexible in our approach, ensuring scrutiny and transparency by sharing our ESG performance.

Zero Carbon

We know a pivotal part of any sustainability strategy is setting out the steps we will take to tackle emissions and how our work will reduce our carbon footprint. Edinburgh Airport is no different and although we are carbon neutral as a business, we know as a wider industry there are impacts – we will work to reduce those.

We want to work in partnership to ensure we are leading and advocating in the fight against Climate Change, helping Scotland and the UK transition to a low carbon economy by leading within aviation to achieve Net Zero and continuing to pursue progressive onsite carbon management.

Enhancing Scotland

We know that Edinburgh Airport will be for many the first and last point of contact with Scotland, the country we’re lucky enough to call home, so we want to make sure we deliver an airport we can be proud of. We are committed to creating an airport that showcases the best of Scotland whilst delivering the finest passenger experience.

To do that, we will offer passengers a sustainable connectivity experience and be a valued and sustainable partner by reducing our environmental impact and providing options for passengers to help us do that. We will also strive to help make Scottish tourism carbon neutral – a goal we feel is achievable.
