Lakeland community college names new president, things to do music and concerts, matchbox twenty making first blossom music center appearance in years, ‘there’s a dismissive aspect about our band,’ says member, as enduring rock act approaches rock hall eligibility.
If you want to feel old, look no further than the fact ’90s alternative rock act Matchbox Twenty officially has entered the classic-rock phase of its career.
Over the past three decades, the Rob Thomas-led band sold more than 40 million records worldwide based on a bunch of No. 1 hits — “Real World,” “Back 2 Good,” “Push,” “3AM,” “Bent,” “If You’re Gone.” “Unwell” and “How Far We’ve Come” — yielding ubiquitous radio airplay
“Yeah, I definitely think we entered the pantheon of classic rock,” said Matchbox Twenty guitarist-vocalist Kyle Cook, calling from Reno, Nevada. “And I’m really OK with that because a lot of the music I grew up, a lot of the music I still adore, I guess falls within that genre.
“So I’m happy to be an elderly guy walking through Walgreens to get some shaving cream and hearing ‘3AM’ for the 700,000th time.”
Matchbox Twenty is back with its first new album in more than a decade. The recently released “Where the Light Goes” includes the new single “Wild Dogs (Running in a Slow Dream).”
What’s crazy, considering how long the group has been together, is the fact the latest project is only the band’s fifth studio effort. That is a prime example of artistic supply and demand leaving diehard fans wanting more, which is a concept many bands don’t employ. (Hey, The Killers, we’re looking at you.)
The end result means — whether you love or loathe them — Matchbox Twenty doesn’t have any clunker albums in its catalog.
“We are definitely not a band that’s like ‘Hey, I wrote a song — let’s record it,’” he said. “There’s a lot of self-editing that was happening before we all had individual studios. Now that the band has success and made some money and has their own individual studios, that self-editing takes on even a more elaborate process.
“Before a song even gets to the stage of ‘Hey guys, what do you think of this?’ many, many songs have been written. A lot of filtering has gone on because we have a very high standard for what we consider to be a song worthy of being recorded by Matchbox Twenty.”
Matchbox Twenty is returning to Northeast Ohio for a show on June 13 at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls.
The group last came through Blossom in 2017 on a co-headlining jaunt with Counting Crows.
“That was a great tour,” he said. “(Counting Crows) preceded us by three or four years. They were like the seniors of the ’90s class, and then we sort of followed them up. To get to play with them every night was big for us.”
That Matchbox Twenty’s debut record, “Yourself or Someone Like You,” came out 27 years ago means the alternative-rock act is eligible for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Despite the outfit’s longevity, as well as record and ticket sale success, the question remains whether the band is worthy for such consideration.
Surely, music fans will be divided by the notion.
So does Cook think the band is worthy?
“Whew, I don’t know,” he said. “I would certainly hope so, and I know everybody else feels the same way. We’re kind of intrigued we’ve had quite a successful career over the two and a half decades, especially when you factor in Rob’s success with Santana — a couple of Grammy noms.
“From a cultural perspective, for some reason, there’s a dismissive aspect about our band. Maybe it’s because we don’t have heroin addictions and aren’t married to celebrities. I don’t know what it is. We’re just normal dudes who like to make what we feel is good music. In my heart of hearts, I believe somewhere down the road that will happen, but I think it will just take a minute.”

Overall, great concert. Matt Nathanson drew the audience in quickly and kept their attention. Both performers gave a great tribute to Tom Petty which was well done. Hearing the diverse selection on songs over the last few decade from Matchbox 20 gave something to everyone. Thanks for keeping the price affordable.

What a great show!! Super fun. The band was so energetic and you could tell they were having fun. Rob Thomas was stellar. He used the entire stage during the whole show. He is definitely a seasoned entertainer. I couldn't believe how much energy he had! Would definitely recommend and would see them again!
Show was phenomenal! I had a great time and didn't leave my spot the entire time! Had one of the best concert nights ever! Thank you for giving us a great show still after all these years!

Matchbox Twenty has debuted the first track off Where the Light Goes , out May 26 via Atlantic Records. The upbeat, optimistic song “Wild Dogs (Running In A Slow Dream)” is the rock group’s first new music since their 2012 LP North .
Where the Light Goes , the band’s fifth studio album, was produced by Gregg Wattenberg with band members Paul Doucette and Kyle Cook.
In the years since North , the members of Matchbox Twenty have been pursuing other projects. Frontman Rob Thomas released his fourth solo LP, Chip Tooth Smile , in 2019 and reunited with Santana in 2021 for the single, “Move.”
The Slow Dream Tour is the band’s first since 2017’s A Brief History of Everything tour, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You .
Tickets are currently on sale via the band’s website . Fans can also purchase limited-edition “instant” collectible CD sets and digital downloads from each tour show via Ticketmaster for a $5 discount when they purchase tickets. Matchbox Twenty w/Matt Nathanson Toledo Zoo Toledo, OH August 04, 2023
For Matchbox Twenty fans who had waited more than 3 years to see the band perform, Friday night at the Toledo Zoo was a dream come true. The original tour, scheduled for 2020, was delayed three times but was ultimately worth the wait.
Frontman Rob Thomas, who at 51 still looks and sounds like he did years ago in the band’s heyday, kept the crowd entertained and engaged for a two-hour show packed with hits from Matchbox Twenty’s 27-year career. He moved all around the stage taking advantage of the lower stage and intimate venue setting to interact with fans in the first several rows. At one point he even climbed the pole at the side of the stage, clearly enjoying himself as much as the crowd was enjoying the show.
The other members of Matchbox Twenty, Kyle Cook on lead guitar and vocals, Paul Doucette on guitar and keyboards, and Brian “Pookie” Yale on Bass were all fantastic as well. They all had a blast performing and seemed very happy to be together again making music for the enthusiastic crowd. Long-time supporting musicians, Matt Beck on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, and Stacy Jones, on drums, rounded out the band and helped bring the energy to the show.
For the setlist, the band opened with a song off their latest record, Where the Light Goes, called “Friends”. The hook of the song “All My Friends are Here” was clearly meant to convey the joy of finally being back on stage with everyone in the crowd in attendance. The show built from there with songs from all their albums including “How Far We’ve Come”, “Real World”, “Disease” and more.
There were a few quieter moments when the band came together around Paul on the piano with Rob singing “Hand Me Down”. This was followed by just Rob and Kyle together on stools at the front of the stage doing a stripped-down acoustic version of “If You’re Gone”. Kyle had a chance to perform his song “The Way” off the “North” album which the crowd really enjoyed.
The main set ended with “Rebels”, another song from their new album. The band had said in an interview before the tour that “Rebels” was the song they were most excited to play live and it lived up to that excitement. The encore contained probably the band’s biggest hits with “3AM”, “Unwell”, “Push”, and “Bright Lights”. “Push” was recently featured in the Barbie Movie and has given the band new recognition as it has put them back on the Billboard Charts for the first time in many years.
As the final song of the night, Matchbox Twenty had the excited crowd sing along with “Don’t You Forget About Me”, a Simple Minds cover. Everyone went nuts and lived up to the moment earlier in the show when Rob quipped, “It is a Zoo out there”.
When the show finally ended and the band took their bows, everyone in attendance left with a smile on their face and a sincere wish the band would come back again soon.
Opening the night was Matt Nathanson who had the crowd up on their feet dancing and singing along to his songs immediately.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sorry, Yuja Wang fans. Your favorite pianist won’t be coming to Cleveland this season.
On Thursday, the Cleveland Orchestra announced that Wang, a virtuoso noted for her charismatic performances and widely regarded as one of today’s leading lights, has withdrawn from her scheduled concerts with guest conductor Klaus Makela at Severance Music Center April 18-20.
No official explanation was given, but the Cleveland Orchestra is not unique in its situation. Wang also withdrew recently from a performance of Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where Makela was also scheduled to conduct and was recently named music director.
Several media outlets, including the New York Times , have reported that Wang and Makela were in a personal relationship but have recently broken up.
In Cleveland, Wang had been slated to perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments.
In her stead will now be pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, performing Gershwin’s Concerto in F.
The orchestral main attraction in Cleveland remains the same. As originally scheduled, Makela will conduct Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” In addition, he will now also conduct Milhaud’s “Le Boeuf sur le toit.”
More information and tickets can be obtained at clevelandorchestra.com . For answers to detailed questions, or to order tickets by phone, call 216-231-1111.

The band has announced the 2024 International Players tour in support of their forthcoming album Ohio Players , out Friday. The North American run of shows will feature special guests The Head And The Heart on select dates.
The International Players tour will run for 31 dates, beginning in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sept. 17 and wrapping in Detroit, Michigan, on Nov. 12. The Black Keys will make stops in Austin, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Toronto, Nashville, Louisville, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, and more. The band will also perform two hometown shows in Ohio.
General sale for the tour will begin on Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. local time. Presales will run throughout the week through Live Nation and the official Black Keys website.
Ohio Players marks the studio album number 12 for the Black Keys and their first since 2022's Dropout Boogie . "We'd never worked harder to make a record. It's never taken us this long to make an album. We took our time and did it right," Dan Auerbach shared in a statement earlier this year.
"We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.' It's funny because we both write songs with other people – Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I'm producing a record. That's what we do," Patrick Carney added. "What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun. And something that most bands 20 years into their career don't make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool."
