Adaptive cruise control supplements conventional cruise control with an active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature. Designed for use on freeways and express ways, in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, your car automatically accelerates or decelerates in order to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you.

To activate the system, press the "ON/OFF" button at the end of the stalk on the lower end of the right side of the steering wheel. The radar-ready indicator will appear in the Multi Information Display.

Accelerate or decelerate to your intended speed, then press the stalk down to set it. If you want to go faster, push the stalk upward and hold until you've reached the desired speed and then release it. Or, if you want to slow down, push the stalk down and hold as you decelerate, then release it once you've reached the desired speed.

To cancel cruise control, tap the brakes, pull the stalk towards you or turn the system off with the ON/OFF button.

Adaptive Cruise Control was designed to maintain the preset distance between your car and the car driving in the same lane directly ahead of you.

When it’s active, it automatically adjusts for changes in the speed of the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance you set.

In the event that you would like to change the preset distance between vehicles, you can do so by using the radar range button located on the lower right side of the steering wheel. Simply press the button repeatedly to cycle through the ranges available. You'll find them displayed on the Multi Information Display. And finally, you can disable the distance holding feature by pushing the cruise control stalk away and holding it until the indicator disappears and the conventional cruise control indicator lights up.

How to Turn off Cruise Control Toyota Corolla

To turn off cruise control in a Toyota Corolla:

  • Press the brake pedal or the 'CANCEL' button on the steering wheel.
  • For a complete shutdown, push the cruise control lever away from you or turn off the ignition.

Understanding Cruise Control

cruise control functions explained

Cruise control is a system in cars that keeps the speed constant automatically, making long drives easier. When turned on, it adjusts the car's speed to what the driver sets, helping to prevent speeding and reduce tiredness on long journeys. It's best used on highways or roads with consistent speed and few stops.

However, it shouldn't be used in bad weather, heavy traffic, or on curvy roads, as it requires the driver to control the vehicle actively. Understanding how cruise control works is important for using it safely and effectively. It's meant to assist the driver, not to replace paying attention while driving.

Locating the Controls

To turn off cruise control in your Toyota Corolla, you need to know where the controls are. The layout of cruise control buttons might change based on the year and model of your Toyota Corolla, but they're always easy to reach while driving. Here's a simple guide to find the main controls:

  • Steering Wheel: The cruise control lever or buttons are on or near the steering wheel.
  • Instrument Panel: Some models show cruise control indicators or settings on the instrument panel.
  • On/Off Button: There's a button to turn the cruise control system on or off, usually on the steering wheel or a stalk attached to it.
  • Set/Accel Button: This button sets the speed or speeds up while using cruise control.
  • Cancel Button: This button cancels the cruise control setting without turning the system off.

Deactivating Cruise Control

properly deactivating cruise control

To turn off cruise control in your Toyota Corolla, you can follow one of the steps below:

  • Press the cancel button on the steering wheel to temporarily stop cruise control without losing your set speed. This is useful when you need to slow down quickly, like in heavy traffic or bad road conditions.
  • Hit the brake pedal to completely stop cruise control and start slowing down right away. This is a good option for immediate speed reduction.
  • Push the ON/OFF button on the control stalk to turn off cruise control completely. If you choose this, you'll have to turn it on and set your speed again when you want to use it next.

Quick guide:

  • Cancel Button: Stops cruise control temporarily.
  • Brake Pedal: Stops cruise control and slows the car.
  • ON/OFF Button: Turns off cruise control completely.

Tips for Safe Disengagement

When turning off the cruise control in your Toyota Corolla, ensure safety for a smooth switch to manual driving. Safe disengagement prevents unexpected road situations. Here's how to do it safely:

  • Look around : Before turning off cruise control, check mirrors and blind spots for nearby vehicles. Ensure there's enough space to slow down without affecting others.
  • Slow down gradually : Use the cruise control buttons to reduce speed slowly before turning it off. This avoids sudden slowing that could surprise following drivers.
  • Brake lightly : To disengage cruise control, lightly press the brake pedal. Only brake hard in emergencies. Gentle braking is important for control and safety.
  • Switch to manual carefully : After cruise control is off, carefully control your speed. Avoid quick speed changes until you're in full control.
  • Stay focused : Keep your attention on the road and hands on the wheel, ready to adjust speed or direction as needed.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

troubleshooting technical difficulties guide

Let's discuss how to fix common cruise control problems in a Toyota Corolla.

If cruise control won't turn off, start by checking the brake pedal. Make sure it's moving freely and that the brake lights work when you press it. If that's not the issue, look at the cruise control switch and its connections. These might need cleaning or reconnecting. If you're not sure how to do this, ask a professional for help.

If your cruise control doesn't keep a steady speed or turns off by itself, the problem might be with the speed sensor or the car's computer. The speed sensor tells the computer how fast you're going. If it's broken, cruise control won't work properly. You might need a mechanic to diagnose and fix this issue.

To turn off cruise control in your Toyota Corolla, just look for the cancel button and press it, or you can lightly step on the brake pedal.

Make sure you're always ready to steer the car yourself. If it's not working right, you can check for simple problems before going to a mechanic.

Knowing how to use all the parts of your car makes driving safer and more fun.

How To Set Cruise Control On Toyota Corolla 2021

Simply press the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control button for around two seconds to enter standard cruise control. The indicator light will flash to let you know this has happened.

In This Article...

Has cruise control been included to the 2021 Corolla?

Seven different variants of the Toyota Corolla are available to consumers in 2021. L, LE, Hybrid LE, SE, SE Nightshade Edition, XLE, and XSE versions are among them. Each model adds something special to the portfolio, whether it is a feature like a sunroof or a 7-inch Multi-Information Display, which are both optional.

New Features Added for the 2021 Model

Numerous versions from the 2020 Corolla have been added to the 2021 model. The introduction of the Corolla Apex Edition to the range, the inclusion of Automatic Engine Shut-Off, and the inclusion of standard equipment like Android Auto connectivity and rear-seat side airbags are just a few of these.

Standard Advanced Safety Features

The Toyota Safety SenseTM 2.0 system, which comes standard on the 2021 Toyota Corolla, comprises Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection.

How does cruise control work?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

  • Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is great. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Here is a video explaining adaptive cruise control, which is a precursor to autonomous vehicles and is becoming more and more common in new cars every year:

Are there cruise controls on a Toyota Corolla?

In a Toyota Corolla, deactivating the cruise control often involves using the brake pedal or finding the cruise control lever and activating the on/off button at the end of the lever.

Push and hold the lever away from you while your cruise control is turned on if your Toyota Corolla is equipped with adaptive cruise control; release when the adaptive cruise control indicator is replaced with the conventional cruise control indicator light.

How does a 2021 Toyota RAV4 cruise control work?

How to Use the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control on a Toyota RAV4

  • Press the steering-wheel-mounted cruise control button.
  • Reach the Cruise Control Speed You Want.
  • Set Your Speed by Pressing the SET Button.
  • Use the +/- Buttons to speed up or slow down.
  • To turn off cruise control, press CANCEL or apply the brakes.

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

Does your car benefit from cruise control?

Yes, generally speaking. Due to its capacity to maintain a constant pace, cruise control can help you become more fuel-efficient and can help you save on gas on average by 714%. In contrast, the constant acceleration and deceleration caused by the driver’s foot on the pedals might use up more gas.

On a 2020 Toyota Camry, where is the cruise control?

Turn on the cruise control setting by pressing the button in the center of the circle on the right side of the steering wheel. Push set, the button along the bottom of the ring, when you are moving at the desired speed. Use the button on the top of the ring to change the speed.

How does cruise control mode work?

The use of cruise control can lessen the amount of weariness that long-distance drivers could experience. The system mimics how human drivers operate their vehicles. However, it employs an actuator to operate the throttle instead of the accelerator pedal, allowing your automobile to maintain the same speed when travelling.

When is cruise control inappropriate to use?

Even though modern vehicles have numerous safety measures, it’s still crucial to understand when to avoid using the cruise control. This is due to the fact that cruise controlyes, even ACCis solely intended for long-distance travel on an interstate or other major roadway.

Avoid using cruise control when:

  • when you’re operating a vehicle in a city or town. As we’ve previously stated, cruise control is only designed for one scenario. There are many unpredictable bikers, pedestrians, and other roadblocks in the city that aren’t present on the interstate. Additionally, cruise control cannot be used below a particular speed in most cars, making it hard to utilize it at city speeds.
  • when the weather is slick or damp outside. Never use cruise control on slick surfaces, even if your car has functions like ACC or traction control. This is because utilizing cruise control while driving in slick weather may cause your wheels to spin more quickly than they should, which could lead to hydroplaning or shorter stopping distances.
  • when you come upon curvy roadways. Last but not least, if you’re on a curving road, you should never utilize cruise control. This is so you can maneuver corners and curves safely and manually, as maintaining a steady acceleration could result in a loss of control.
  • when there is a lot of traffic. Like in the city, there is still a good chance of traffic if you are on the highway. You must turn off your cruise control whenever the flow of traffic slows down so that you may manually regulate your speed and use the brakes as necessary.
  • when you are sleepy The distinction between cruise control and autopilot is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind. In most cars, cruise control does not operate the brakes or the steering of the vehicle. You might not be able to dodge a hazard on the road in time if you’re drowsy and your reaction times are slow.

After talking about when to avoid using cruise control, let’s examine when it’s okay to use cruise control.

Dashboard Warning Lights – Summary

Welcome back! The following pictorial instructions are for setting the cruise control on a 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla.

The vehicle shown here is a 2004 Corolla.

If the cruise control in your vehicle appears to be broken, try these steps to see if it comes back to life.

These are the steps to set the cruise control in a Toyota:

  • Achieve the speed you would like to maintain and hold steady at that speed using the accelerator foot pedal.
  • Press the button on the end of the cruise control knob (a light on the panel will illuminate labeled “CRUISE”). This turns the cruise ON.
  • Press the knob downward and release it to SET the cruise.
  • Remove your foot from the accelerator.

Now in More Detail (With Pictures, Please!)

The first step is to accelerate to the speed you would like to maintain. Cruise seems to work best above about 30-45 mph. Your instrument panel will look something like the following (though at some speed).

toyota corolla verso cruise control

When you have reached the speed that you want the cruise control to maintain for you hold that speed with your foot on the accelerator.

Now, on the cruise control knob near the steering wheel, press the button on the end labeled “CRUISE ON-OFF”.

toyota corolla verso cruise control

Press the button in once and release it.

On the instrument panel, a light will come on labeled “CRUISE”.

toyota corolla verso cruise control

Note: The cruise will not actually be activated yet!

The next step is to press the entire knob downward in a motion consistent with the arrow indicating “SET/COAST”.

toyota corolla verso cruise control

Then release it. Now the cruise control is set. (Even though there is no further indication on the dashboard…!)

You should be able to take your foot off of the accelerator.

A couple of other notes.

  • To accelerate, press the knob upward and release. This will increase your speed by about 1 mph.
  • To decelerate,  press the knob downward and release. This will decrease your speed by about 1 mph.
  • To cancel the cruise momentarily, pull the knob toward you and release. This will “CANCEL” the cruise until you press the knob up again to “RESUME”.

To turn the cruise off completely, press the button on the end of the knob in again and release it (the light on the dash will go out).

Alright! I hope this was helpful for someone!

Here is how to install Cruise Control to your Auris...

Found this instruction on Toyota Owner's Club Russia

-forum, special thanks to Andron, who took the pictures

and wrote the russian text!

I made some improvements and posted it here, enjoy...

You're gonna need two parts:

(You can see the part numbers on the pictures)

Next you have to connect the wire to the switch

After that, remove the cover caps from both sides of the wheel

After removing you will see the following:

(there is a possibility that the caps don't exist, if so, you'll see one screw on both sides of the wheel,

and should just continue to the next step)

Remove the screws (TORX 30).

Pull the airbag covers' upper side towards yourself. DO NOT disconnect the airbag's wire!

Put the switch to it's place from the inside of the right hole (or make the hole in case

you didn't do the "remove the covers from both sides of the wheel" -step because of

not having any covers.

After that just tighten the switch with two M5x10mm, not M6

Under the airbag cover you'll see the connection places, the one on the right is free

Connect the wire to it

Insert the wire as it is shown on the picture below

After it's done just put everything back as it was...

Turn on the ignition and push the "ON/OFF" button

Everything is ready and working just fine!

Now all you need is a test drive... But please read how to use the Cruise Control

from your Toyota owner's guide!

You cannot install Cruise Control if your car has 4ZZ-FE -engine!!

Thanks

Aldridge Andy

Great contribution, and I am sure there will be quite a few people out there for whom this will be very useful.

So if you can just buy the cruise control from Toyota and a cable and then conenct them up??

That's correct!

This then begs the question - KINGO (parts king) how much for the 2 bits listed in the first post?

Will this work for 1.4 D-4D Auris with Manual Transmission ?

Parts-King

The switch and cable come to £72.44 delivered to any UK address, overseas will be higher

I don't know, but you will find it out by checking that the engine type isn't

4ZZ-FE, with others it should work, even if you have manual gearbox.

Other things that you should check is to look at the left from the RPM

display (on the upper side of the handbrake -light)

in a sunshine or by pointing there with lamp, if you'll see there

the text "cruise" (which lights up when the controller is installed and

is shown on the last photo of my instructions), then

you should have the option available.

But this is not 100% sure information, so please check the availibility

of cruise control to your model also from your Toyota dealer or from the

user's manual. Good luck to you!

The switch and cable come to £72.44 delivered to any UK address, overseas will be higher Are you saying that the Cruise function is already on the car and you just need these two parts to enable it? If that is the case it seems a remarkably cheap cruise control. I am sceptical Kingo

It is a fact that every Auris has Cruise pre-installed because they have the green "cruise" -light on the dashboard (or whatever, you know, at the left side on the speed/rpm display...) You can see it by looking in good lightning. So I think if there's a pre-installed Cruise in the car, the whole operation isn't very difficult if you want to install the cruise afterwards. It's just that the dealers make a lot of money by doing the installation themselves, because no-one really knows what do they do and how easy or difficult the installation really is!

Regards, Alex

It is quite normal for some car manufacturers to fit the things (almost) but deactivate them and enable when you pay extra. That lower the manufacturing cost I believe. That way it took only few minutes to have heated mirrors in some older VAGs (all the cabling was there) or heated seats on some Volvo models. Computer that regulates the throttle has probably CC options programmed in so it is just a matter to hook up into it (I am guessing).

Thank you for the detailed reply brother!

I checked the manual, my engine is 1ND-TV .

Then I went to garage and looked at the display with a flashlight, I definitely could read the CRUISE . :)

Then I checked my steering column for the caps you said. I have one right under the star screw, near the ignition. :D

So this means I can install cruise control, yes?

Ok I have a base model 1.8 litre Auris (Corolla in Australia) and I called the dealer to ask about the cruise control and he quoted me $5000 :o

I said can't I just buy the lever and install it after, he said that apparently Id need to change computer modules in the car and I am better off buying after market cruise control.

Is he for real?

hertsnminds

As well as the steering wheel control the cruise control needs to know when any of the pedals are being pressed. If you press the clutch or brake when the cruise control is on it should cancel the cruise. If you press the accelerator with cruise control on it should let you accelerate and then resume cruise after you release the pedal. Even if the sensors are already in place for all of the pedals is the software that sends this information to the cruise control system enabled?

It sounds like you can go for it... Great to hear that your car has these options, so you have the chance to install Cruise!

I've just read on the russian forum, that when you press the clutch, the Cruise is disabled... But it is not a big problem,

because usually you use the same gear on the high speeds and don't change gears!

Guys on the russian forum has done it, and everything works fine...

because usually you use the same gear on the high speeds and don't change gears! No other problems were found while

testing the system...

Look at the last picture on the first installation instruction post... You should use M5x10mm screws for tightening the switch instead of M6x10mm screws!!! Sorry for the mistake.

G6-R

Can somebody give the link from the RussiaTOCforum where all this is quoted ;)

Look here please!

I' ve found this document http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com/toyotawiring.pdf

it says that a wire between ECU and a conector behind steering wheel is missing, the problem is that this document is for corolla and prius, and the ecu pinout is not the same.

Can anybody check this for me, anyones knows were to find the ecu pinout?

Auris come to russia only with petrol engines, not with diesels. If not working with 4zz-fe (1.4vvt-i), work sure with 1.6 dual vvt.

Maybe and with 2.0 d4d.

Hello guys! I've installed CruiseControl to my car today. And YES, it WORKS!! It's just wonderful, loving it allready.

hey, the HID kit in your signature pic, is that factory or aftermarket?

Hello Modena!

The kit is aftermarket, it's 6000k from Cobra...

Could you post some more clear photos, like the projection onto the wall, view from the front and back etc.

Also a link to cobra site??

I am interested in getting a kit for mine.

Ok, will try to do that as soon as possible.

I'll make some photos in the dark and

post them on this forum. Will give you the

link to the Cobra site then too...

Please check my Introducing my Auris! -post for further details... I will post

the pics and information regarding my

xenon kit in there!

Hi everybody ,

so i got Auris 1,4 Petrol (4ZZ-FE) and i'm curious why this cruise control do not work on this engine ? If anybody have some idea ? I got the "CRUISE" sign in the left side next to RPM, got two cover caps .. everything. Why this works only in 1,6 Petrol. Does anybody try to put cruise on 4ZZ-FE to see will it works ? I really want to install this thing on my car because is so easy to drive on highway. Thanks in advice!

Toyota Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (19 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become standard in many models, including Toyotas.

The following Toyota cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans have adaptive cruise control.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system is available.

toyota

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Toyota Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 toyota corolla.

Toyota Corolla has had standard adaptive cruise control in the eleventh generation’s final three models (2017 to 2019) and the twelfth generation (2020 to present).

2009 to 2016 Toyota Corolla models only had cruise control in the higher trims, while 2008 and earlier ones had the feature as optional equipment.

#2 Toyota Yaris

The discontinued Toyota Yaris had cruise control as standard in 2019 and 2020; the 2012 to 2018 models only had the system in the higher trims.

All Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrids have the adaptive cruise control system as standard since its 2021 introduction.

#12 Toyota Venza

The midsize Toyota Venza SUV has had adaptive cruise control as standard since its re-introduction in 2021.

Older Toyota Venza models before 2016 had the more-basic cruise control instead.

#13 Toyota Highlander & Highlander Hybrid

The three-row midsize Toyota Highlander had adaptive cruise control in 2017 and onwards.

Older Toyota Highlanders before 2017 (down to 2001) had the conventional cruise control.
