The Star Trek franchise consists primarily of several multi-season television shows and a dozen movies, as well as various video games and inspired merchandise. Many aspects of the fictional universe impact modern popular culture, especially the lingo and the idea of a spacecraft launching space torpedoes and firing lasers, and have had a wide influence in the late 20th to early 21st century. Star Trek is popular enough that its science fiction concepts have even been studied by real scientists, and NASA described its science in relation to the real world as "entertaining combination of real science, imaginary science gathered from lots of earlier stories, and stuff the writers make up week-by-week to give each new episode novelty." For example, NASA noted that the Star Trek "phasers" were a fictional extrapolation of real-life lasers, and compared them to real-life microwave based weapons that have a stunning effect.

For those who consider themselves as die-hard fans of the popular sci-fi Star Trek universe, you may already know that Star Trek’s 24 th century has some astounding array of Starfleet ships that we can stare at with admiration. Star Trek has had strong starships designs since the very beginning. Let’s dig a bit deeper to know more.

The history of Star Trek dates back to 1966-1967 with The Original Series Season 1. All this began when a writer and former Air Force pilot, Gene Roddenberry , wanted to make a science fiction TV show that featured characters that show humanity at its best.

Since then, there has been no looking back as Star Trek has become one of the most popular sci-fi television shows of all time. While it has been entertaining its audience for decades and is globally known for its genre of science fiction, it’s also known for it’s the great space battles with different alien species.

Over the years, the show came up with dozens of iconic starship designs, many of which are even known to people who don’t follow Star Trek. The idea behind the creation of these ships was to represent the diversity of various races, cultures, and factions. So, whether it’s the TOS ( The Original Series ), Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) , Deep Space Nine (DS9), Voyager, or Picard , the show has always lived up to the expectation of producing some vast fleets that demonstrated the abilities at their best.

If you have to rank these astonishing ships, what do you think? Which are the most powerful ships of all? Not sure about the answer? No problem, here we are, revealing a list of 30 most powerful Star Trek ship names today.

From TOS to Picard, we’ve covered and presented some of the powerful Star Trek ships . Their rankings are based on specifications, including speed, size, and power. So, are you ready and excited to know their names? Let’s begin!

See awesome great details in this book Ships of the Line on amazon.

List of Powerful Star Trek Ship Names Revealed

30. ss botany bay.

SS Botany Bay

Built in the late 20 th century by the United States of America, this DY-100-class sleeper ship played a great role in helping Khan Noonien Singh and his group to escape Earth after being defeated at Eugenics Wars . You can explore the nuclear power of this ship and know more about it by watching the prime timeline of Star Trek – TOS.

29. Phoenix

Phoenix, an Earth spaceship, was constructed during the mid-21 st century. The interesting fact about this ship is that it used to be a nuclear missile. Yes, Lily Sloane and Zefram Cochrane later converted this missile into a prototype spaceship. Isn’t it amazing? That’s not it; it is also known to be the first human-made spacecraft launched from Earth to travel faster than the speed of light by using warp-drive technology.

28. Friendship 1

You will come across this Star Trek ship name in a Star Trek: Voyager episode. Launched in 2067 by the United Earth Space Probe Agency, four years after the Phoenix’s game-changing flight, this deep space probe came to find other species. The Friendship 1 ship’s exquisite feature is that it contained a lot of scientific, technological, and cultural information that helped to seek out new worlds and new civilizations.

27. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-J)

You can get a glimpse of this starship in the “Azati Prime” – The Star Trek: Enterprise episode. It bags one of the top spots in the list as it boasts some of the advanced technologies. However, it is not that popular due to two reasons – one, it just has a brief glimpse, and second, a time-traveling Captain said that the Enterprise-J exists in a possible future timeline.

26. Galileo (NCC-1701-7)

Assigned to the USS Enterprise in the 2260s, Galileo was a Class F shuttlecraft and bore the name of the great astronomer and mathematician of all time. They first used a telescope – Galileo Galilei. However, this craft was lost near Taurus II in 2267, at the time of the Murasaki Effect investigation. It was then replaced with the same numbered craft that was dubbed as the ‘Galileo II.’

25. USS Raven (NAR-32450)

This Federation exploration vessel was the home and the workplace of Magnus and Erin Hansen, the Borg-studying scientists. Check out its remains in the Star Trek: Voyager episode, “The Raven.”

24. Deep Space Nine

Deep Space 9 - space station

While this isn’t technically a ship, its a space station, we though it was important to include. There are two sides to this. On one side, it is simply an old Cardassian mining station for the same-titled TV series. While on the other hand, the same mining station is modified and reconstructed into a battle station with 5,000 photon torpedoes in Deep Space Nine – Season 4 of Star Trek.

23. USS Defiant (NX-74205)

Built for Borg battles, this amazing Federation craft was armed with a cloaking device that was lent from the Romulan Star Empire. It is known to be one of the successful warships that you can see for yourself in Star Trek: Deep Space Nin e as well as Star Trek: First Contact . Also know for it’s “mining” capabilities in games.

22. La Sirena

Memory Alpha states that this newcomer Star Trek ship is a Kaplan F17 Speed Freighter, a class of civilian ships equipped with phasers and shields but a whole lot of hologram capacities. Not to forget, it is the only entry from Star Trek: Picard.

21. USS Franklin (NX-326)

This ship is small, but at the same time, tough, just like other Freedom-class starships. You can see this 22 nd -century ship in the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek: Beyond, seat belts. It is equipped with stealth technology, cannons, and torpedoes, and its warp four power was used to get to the Starbase Yorktown from the planet, Altamid .

20. Enterprise (NX-01)

In the 22nd century of Star Trek: Enterprise , you can see how this starship has the potential to carry a huge crew of almost 100 people. It is remembered as a victory of Zefram Cochrane’s theories of space travel.

19. Sh’Raan

Even though the Vulcans are known better than combat ships for logic, the pre-Federation years have seen Spock’s forerunners ready to throw down in Sh’Raan – the Star Trek: Enterprise -era starship that was capable of Warp 7 power.

18. USS Shenzhou (NCC-1227)

This Walker-class Federation USS starship was introduced in the 23 rd century, and you can see it in Star Trek: Discovery. It had everything, including phasers, cannons, and torpedoes, but unfortunately, it got smashed in the Battle of the Binary Stars that occurred in 2256.

17. Sarcophagus

Bigger than the Shenzhou, Klingon starship of the 23rd-century can be witnessed in the Star Trek: Discovery pilot. One interesting feature of the Sarcophagus is that its armor contains the remains of Klingon warriors in the form of a patchwork of caskets.

16. Jem’Hadar Warship

Simply put, it’s all interconnected when we talk about this warship. The story of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is incomplete without the Dominion, and the story of Dominion is incomplete without the Jem’Hadar warship, i.e., its military division.

15. USS Prometheus (NCC-71201)

This Nebula-class Federation USS starship is in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . It was introduced as a floating science trial. It not only gets the job done but is also famous for its magnificent goal of reigniting a dead sun.

14. USS Excelsior (NX-2000)

It is featured in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as the first Federation starship having trans-warp drive. This 23rd-century ship was operated by Starfleet and served Captain Hikaru Sulu , who commanded the Excelsior from 2290 to at least 2320.

13. D7-class Battle Cruiser

This Klingon starship is considered the largest of its era as it was 748 feet long and had 430 crew members. Although many other cooler introductions came along in the 24 th century, this starship still holds a higher rank. It is also termed as ‘ the pinnacle of combat warships in the 23rd century ’ as per StarTrek.com.

12. Scimitar

This Reman-made ship boasts about a lot of things. Featuring in Star Trek: Nemesis , it is loaded with photon-torpedo bays and disruptor banks. Additionally, Scimitar can convert itself into a Thalaron weapon. It is similar to a nuclear weapon but has far more destructive attributes than the latter.

11. Vor’Cha-class Attack Cruiser

This was yet another heavily armed Klingon starship used during the middle and later part of the 24 th century. It was almost as long as a Galaxy-class Federation craft and was similarly used as the backbone of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance fleet in the mirror universe.

10. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

Have you seen the original iconic Enterprise? USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) is a Constitution-class starship that is essentially a replica of it. It was first featured in the prime timeline of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Additionally, it also appears in the Kelvin timeline of the J.J. Abrams-era Star Trek films.

9. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

USS Enterprise-B is a polished version of the prime timeline’s Constitution-class Enterprise. This Excelsior-class Federation starship was introduced in the 23rd century and can be seen in Star Trek Generations .

8. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), Prime Timeline

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was a 23rd century Federation Constitution-class starship launched in 2258. Officially Federation was a flagship, this starship was operated by Starfleet. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the planet Altamid battle in 2263.

7. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), Kelvin Timeline

This starship was introduced in the 23rd century, so it has the potential of more than warp 8. In fact, it became the first Federation starship to start a five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk . It is said to be more than double the size of the Prime Timeline’s Enterprise.

6. Romulan Warbird

Romulan Warbird

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew were awestruck by this Romulan Warbird for obvious reasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation . According to StarTrek.com, it is considered to be the largest and the most powerful Romulan spacecraft.

5. Negh’Var Warship

Negh’Var Warship was the largest class of starship, running more than 2,250 massive feet long. This powerful starship was operated as the emperor’s flagship in the Klingon Empire during the late 24 th century.

4. USS Vengeance

USS Vengeance

Designed and developed by Khan Noonien Singh and Section 31, Star Trek: Into Darkness reveals how scary this 23rd-century starship is. From Star Trek’s Kelvin timeline, this ship was specifically created for combat and was commissioned in 2259. It has very assassin type feel.

3. The Whale Probe

You cannot stop boasting about the exquisite features of this starship – the Whale Probe. Featured in the Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , defeating it is out of the question as it is a massive, power-sucking, starship-disabling, and ocean-vaporizing craft that visited Earth in 2286 to contact members of the humpback whale species.

2. Xindi Probe

Xindi Probe

We can define this starship as a pure beam of destructive force. Seen in Star Trek: Enterprise, this Xindi Probe not only attacked Earth in the 22nd century but also successfully killed more than 7 million people from Florida to Venezuela leaving complete destruction in it’s wake.

Nomad starship was designed by Dr. Jackson Roykirk and served in the first part of the 21st century. It was created with two goals: to create a ship that could function as an accurate thinking machine while using logic and find new lifeforms in interstellar space. This powerful starship had the potential to clear out at least 4 billion people from four different planets. You can see how Captain Kirk and his team face it in the Star Trek TOS episode, The Changeling.

Wrapping It Up

See awesome great details in this book Ships of the Line on amazon . There are more powerful Star Trek ships in addition to this list. The Doomsday Machine, the Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship , the Species 8472 bioship , the Narada , the Borg Cube , and V’Ger are undoubtedly powerful Star Trek ships featured in different timelines. The high-tech development and their powerful specifications have made them the most powerful ships of the Star Trek era.

Young Sheldon Season 7’s New Character Finally Explains Why Meemaw Is So Different In Big Bang Theory

Ncis: hawai’i’s cancellation is a massive loss for one important aspect of the franchise, can't wait for fallout season 2 watch ella purnell's underrated sci-fi show with 94% on rotten tomatoes.

Star Trek is famous for having one of the largest and most detailed fleets of spaceships of any science-fiction franchise but the number of ships in the Starfleet has changed with every era. The Star Trek brand has endured for over half of a century since the first series aired in 1966. The series was originally designed as a parable for the social issues of the time, such as nuclear proliferation, civil rights, and equality of the sexes. It has since grown into a broad and multi-faceted sci-fi universe, spanning thousands of light-years and centuries of stories. From Captains Kirk and Picard to Janeway and Archer, the world of Star Trek tracks the evolution of humans as they learn to live in a world in which they are far from alone. Excitingly, 2022 is poised as  Star Trek 's biggest year ever.

Since the Star Trek franchise covers 300 years of human space travel (and even an alternate timeline of blockbuster movies), the creative teams responsible for it have put painstaking work into making sure that the canon is cohesive across each era. As such, they have made social and technological change appear smooth and natural over time. Starfleet has grown with the series, from relatively modest beginnings in Star Trek: Enterprise to an enormous presence across the cosmos in Star Trek: The Next Generation and its contemporary stories.

Pinning down the exact size of Starfleet in each era is unfortunately elusive. However, thanks to the efforts of an incredibly dedicated fan base, much information has been extrapolated from the figures that are known. Thanks to fan-operated online encyclopedias such as the Daystrom Institute Technical Library , it is possible to make close estimates of the number of ships in Starfleet in each major era of the franchise.

2100s (Enterprise)

There is extremely little info on the size of Starfleet during the time of Star Trek: Enterprise , the prequel series set a century before Star Trek: The Original Series . What is known, however, is that it is also only a century after Zephram Cochrane made first contact with the Vulcans in the year 2063. This doesn’t give the people of Earth very much time to develop their own space fleet, especially since Cochrane's first contact with the Vulcans happened in the ruins of the terrible ravages of World War III. The nuclear war had left much of the Earth in an "atomic horror" that threatened the human race with a new dark age before contact with extra-terrestrial life blessed it with new technology and an era of global cooperation.

The Enterprise NX-01 is also confirmed to be the first human starship capable of traveling through space at Warp-5 speed. This limited information combined with the more explicit size of Starfleet in The Original Series , it is possible that there were no more than two or three fully-fledged starships in Starfleet. That would all change in the next century, as the Federation and Starfleet broadened horizons and began exploring deeper and deeper into Star Trek 's final frontier .

2200s (The Original Series, Discovery)

When it comes to the era that started it all, there actually is real hard data on one key aspect of the size of Starfleet, and it comes straight from the most primary of sources: series creator and all-around Star Trek visionary Gene Roddenberry himself. The Making of Star Trek  author Stephen E. Whitfield was granted access to Roddenberry and his team of creatives who developed the original Star Trek series that ran from 1966 to 1969. Roddenberry confirmed the size of Starfleet as he originally envisioned it while making the show that launched the legendary franchise, saying, “ In addition to the twelve starships, there are lesser classes of vessels, capable of operating over much more limited distances. ”

Related:  The Discovery Finally Joins A Star Trek Starfleet Tradition

There it is. In the time of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, there were 12 full-fledged starships such as the Enterprise. There is no record of Roddenberry ever specifying the exact number of the smaller vessels to which he referred. But by comparing several accounts, the Daystrom Institute Technical Library estimates there were likely several hundred of these ships. In terms of the  Star Trek: Discovery  Starfleet , as the series begins only 10 years before the beginning of the Enterprise’s five-year mission, any changes in fleet size between the two series are likely to be negligible.

2300s (The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Picard)

One hundred years after the Enterprise’s five-year mission, Starfleet had expanded across the stars. Captain Jean-Luc Picard remarked once that the Federation’s fleet covered a territory of 8,000 lightyears. The DITL calculates their figure based on the number of starships in various fleets mentioned during Star Trek: The Next Generation , as well as the size of the armadas summoned to defend the Star Trek: Deep Space 9 station during the Dominion War. By their estimate, Starfleet’s major ship count had grown into the thousands. More specifically, the most narrow figure is 5,000-10,000 starships. As  Star Trek: Voyager takes place within the same time frame as The Next Generation  and Star Trek: Picard picks up about a decade after Star Trek: Nemesis concluded The Next Gerneration ’s storyline, it is unlikely that the fleet grew substantially between these series.

2200s - Kelvin Timeline (Star Trek, Into Darkness, Beyond)

It wouldn’t be every era of Star Trek without mentioning the Kelvin Timeline , the alternate reality which contains 2009’s Star Trek and its two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond . There is no data on the differences in fleet size between timelines, if they exist at all. But it's likely that Starfleet was roughly the same size as the primary timeline at the time of the 2009 film.

However, the destruction of Vulcan shifted the course of the Federation. Star Trek Into Darkness saw the secret construction of the USS Vengeance, a starship built specifically for war rather than exploration and diplomacy. The Vengeance was destroyed at the end of the film when it was crashed into the San Francisco Bay in an act of terrorism against the Federation. It is unclear whether there were more warships under construction at the time, but the combined trauma of the two attacks likely drove further expansion and militarization of Starfleet, and at a much faster rate than in the primary timeline of Star Trek .

Update 66 Patch Notes

By rebekah 7 May 2024

star trek fleet names

Gorn Invasion, Pt 2

“My crew is a damn fine crew, just as capable, if not more so, than any other crew in the fleet.”

It’s a big galaxy. Maybe too big sometimes, especially when you are far away from your friends and family. For Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise, this seems truer than ever.

Nurse Chapel, on a mission to tend to a criminal Klingon’s wounds, finds herself stranded with her charge on a distant planet, pursued by his enemies, and unable to contact Pike. Doctor M’Benga must leave the Enterprise and fly with the Independent Commander, searching the galaxy for a rare herb that will save the life of a young girl. Spock is seconded to a Federation vessel crewed only by Vulcans and is taught an unexpectedly singular lesson about logic, pride, and emotion.

There are times, however, when distance is not so much physical as cultural. The Enterprise learns this firsthand when it encounters a world that is both reliant on fossil fuels and on the brink of catastrophic environmental collapse. But perhaps nothing speaks to the alien more than the Gorn, as the Independent Commander discovers when they confront the brutal reptilian race and its horrifying new technology.

“It is simply logical to prepare for the future.”

The month of May brings the second part and conclusion of this SNW arc.

Update 66 Includes:

New ship: the gorn eviscerator.

  • New Monaveen Refit
  • New Officers
  • New Missions
  • New Cosmetics
  • New Battle Pass

The Gorn Eviscerator

Update 66 will introduce a new ship to players Operations 40 and above: the Gorn Eviscerator . Expanding on the groundwork the Discovery ship laid, the Gorn Eviscerator is able to open “Spatial Rips” for quick movement between systems, enabling players to bring their Alliance members to the Spatial Rip location instantly. This is the first ship with passive Isolytic abilities, making it ideal when going up against Gorn Hunter Hostiles.

star trek fleet names

This Gorn-themed ship encompasses 15 tiers with level ranges 40-65. Its “Spatial Rip” allows the player to create a temporary 1-way portal to the system they are in. Once this portal is opened, a message in the alliance chat is sent. The portal will only appear in the player’s system – (no interactable system entities), and an ally will need to open the System Viewer of system A to be able to use the portal and insta-warp to it.

The Spatial Rip will only last for X duration, disappearing when closed, and will have a usage counter – tracking how many ships can use it. Players can travel to any system within their grade or below. Ships that travel through a wormhole get a free, one-time Insta-recall.

Tiering up the Ship will increase the number of ships that can pass through the Spatial Rip, as well as allow the Spatial Rip to stay open longer.

Players Operations 10+ can use the promo code: EVISCERATOR to gain 24,000 Event Store currency, approximately 30min after event reset. This code will not work prior to this time.

There will also be a weekly “Gorn Technology” Event that all players will be able to participate in that will reward players with blueprints.

Passive Abilities

This new ship also possesses a couple of passive abilities: Hunt the Hunters and Rigorous Extraction . Hunt the Hunters is a passive ability that increases Isolytic Damage against Gorn Hunters. Rigorous Extraction, the Gorn Eviscerator’s second battle ability, will amplify that Apex Isomatter when you defeat a Gorn Hunter while using the ship. Tiering up the ship will increase that isolytic damage, and these abilities become critical to the Gorn Eviscerator refinery bundles which have been added to the Isomatter tab located in the Eviscerator Refinery.

Effect on Gorn Hunter Hostiles:

The Eviscerator Refinery will provide you with the Gorn Eviscerator Parts needed to upgrade the ship, as well as other rewards such as:

  • PvP Isolytic Defense artifact Shards
  • Update 65 and Update 66 Officer Shards

Star Trek: Enterprise - What Happened To Jonathan Archer?

Quick links, where was jonathan archer at the end of star trek: enterprise, what happened to jonathan archer, jonathan archers star trek legacy.

  • Captain Jonathan Archer was instrumental in the formation of the Federation and had a lasting impact on Star Trek lore.
  • His legacy continued beyond his command of the Enterprise NX-01 as he achieved the rank of Admiral and later served as President of the United Federation of Planets.
  • Archer was considered the greatest human explorer of the 22nd century, and references in subsequent future iterations of Star Trek demonstrate his enduring influence.

Star Trek fans didn’t meet Captain Jonathan Archer until Star Trek: Enterprise was first broadcast in 2001. The show proved controversial with fans as it set the background for the classic series they loved and suffered the franchise’s customary slow start. But by the end of the show’s four seasons, there was no doubt they’d been watching one of the most important figures in Star Trek history.

The commander of the first NX ship launched by the United Earth Starfleet, Archer could travel further than any human captain thanks to its warp-five engine. He helped create a revolution in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, making first contact with many alien species and helping to found the United Federation of Planets. Not only that, he was also the first captain to bring his pet beagle, Porthos, on away missions. But what happened to him after his time aboard the first ship dubbed the USS Enterprise was over?

Star Trek: Enterprise What Happened To T'Pol?

Enterprise ’s ending after four short years was controversial as it relied on an intervention from The Next Generation for its big send-off. As the first live-action Star Trek series not to earn seven seasons since the Original Series , the show occupies a lower place in the franchise rankings than it should. But over those four years, the show packed in an incredible legacy for Captain Archer and his crew, creating franchise history up to the formation of the Federation.

In Enterprise ’s first season, Archer made a not overly successful first contact with the Klingon Empire, as he was drawn into a confusing temporal war that would last for three years of his command. During his second year, that temporal cold war developed as the Enterprise was unlucky enough to come into contact with species fans knew far better than the crew, like the Romulans and Borg.

Star Trek: What Happened To Dr. Phlox?

Archer’s second year in command ended with disaster, but a renewed direction, as Earth suffered a devastating attack from an alien probe. A season-long arc through the show’s third year saw Archer and crew travel to the Xindi homeworld to destroy a super weapon that could eradicate Earth. Having convinced the Xindi that humanity wouldn’t pose an existential threat to the Xindi homeworld 400 years in the future, the Temporal War was soon, apparently, resolved. That left the fourth year to examine the crew’s influence on Star Trek as the show took a more confident approach to craft and confirm Star Trek lore rather than trying to work around it.

In year four, the Enterprise tackled augmented humans and helped the Klingons overcome the resulting augment virus that radically changed the warrior race’s appearance to the one seen in the Original Series . There was time to subvert the Orion Slave Girl stereotype that had long been a joke at the franchise’s expense, and even introduced fans to how the captain and his crew fared in the Mirror universe with a story that was both a prequel and sequel to Kirk’s adventures.

Perhaps Archer’s most significant on-screen achievement was foiling the machinations of the Romulans to create an alliance with the Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites. That would be cemented when he played a major role in signing the United Federation of Planets Charter.

Star Trek: Ranking Every Iteration Of The USS Enterprise

The last time fans saw Captain Archer was just before making a speech at the signing of the Federation Charter, or an immediate precursor to it, in 2161. Strangely, what happened to the captain is mainly recorded not in expanded or continuing fiction or subsequent series but in Enterprise ’s final two-parter, ‘In A Mirror Darkly.’ The fan-pleasing trip to the Mirror universe was a prequel to ‘Mirror, Mirror,’ and a sequel to ‘The Tholian Web,’ but mostly a great bit of publicity for the Prime universe Archer.

In ‘In A Mirror Darkly,’ fans discovered what happened to the USS Defiant when it phased from the Prime universe during ‘The Tholian Web’ — it arrived in the Mirror universe, almost 100 years in the future. Naturally, when Mirror Archer’s renegade crew hijacks the Defiant to seize control of the Terran Empire, they can’t help but look at the ship’s records.

Star Trek: The Relationship Between Vulcans & Romulans, Explained

A handy screenshot from the ship’s database revealed that Prime Archer commanded the Enterprise for 10 years between 2040 and 2050. We know that after the Federation Charter was signed, he became ambassador to Andoria in 2069 for six years (five years after becoming an honorary member of the Andorian Imperial Guard). Archer then took up a position on the Federation Council until 2183, and between 2184 and 2192, he was the President of the United Federation of Planets.

At retirement, Archer was listed as Chief of Staff at Starfleet Command with the rank of Admiral. ‘In A Mirror Darkly’ teleplay writer Michael Sussman has confirmed further details to the biography seen in the episode. The screen also recorded that Archer lived to about 133 years and died near where he was born in Upstate New York in 2245. Sussman’s neat intention was to confirm that Archer died one day after the christening of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701.

Star Trek: 6 Worst Things Done By The Federation, Ranked

As Mirror Sato explains in ‘A Mirror Darkly,’ Jonathan Archer’s name is “among the most recognized in the Federation.” The Mirror version of Archer is enraged by his counterpart's success, arguing that, “Great men are not peacemakers; great men are conquerors.” The successful, lauded, and praised counterpart with two planets named after him in the Prime universe haunts and taunts the Mirror incarnation as his paranoia grows and he heads to a typically unsavory end.

According to his profile, historians called Prime Archer the "greatest explorer of the 22nd century,” and subsequent iterations of Star Trek have enjoyed name-checking him. Perhaps the strangest reference comes from the Kelvin Timeline . During 2009’s Star Trek , Kirk encounters Montgomery Scott on the cold and remote research outpost of Delta Vega in 2258. The engineer blames his predicament on demonstrating his transwarp theories by beaming a longer-lived Admiral Archer's prized beagle to who knows where.

Star Trek: The USS Enterprise's Best Commanding Officers, Ranked

In the Prime universe, Discovery ’s first season listed Archer as one of Starfleet's most decorated captains as of 2256, alongside Matt Decker, Philippa Georgiou, and two other captains of the Enterprise, Robert April and Christopher Pike. In Strange New Worlds , Captain Pike references Archer when encountering star fleet personnel from the future in ‘Those Old Scientists.’

Time may have become a far more serious factor had Enterprise received a fifth season. In 2012, co-creator Brannon Braga confirmed that the mysterious ‘Future Guy’ who had helped and hindered the Enterprise during the series would have been confirmed as Captain Archer himself , attempting to correct history from the future.

While from a fan’s perspective, Archer sits in the lineage of iconic Starfleet captains like Janeway, Sisko, Picard, and Kirk, his placement in the timeline means he has to embody Star Trek at the dawn of Starfleet. Thanks to his time and technology limits, Archer was probably the most morally challenged captain fans have seen. He was prompted to make judgment calls that Star Trek had never imposed on other captains, which is saying something considering the extreme circumstances of captains Janeway and Sisko.

As a linking figure between the viewers and the more enlightened crews of the 23rd and 24th centuries, there’s no doubt he was a success despite the tricky assignment. Despite seeing too few of his years aboard the USS Enterprise, the franchise committed to giving him an impressive legacy, and it's likely fans will hear his name again.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 6 goes old school and benefits because of it

Why do unevolved, pre-warp civilizations always have such strange and often lethal customs?

a group of people in very plain, grey clothing stand outside under trees

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 6

Here we are then, the other side of the halfway mark of the very last season of " Star Trek: Discovery ." Will the plot actually advance any further? Or does the chase across the galaxy for the Progenitors MacGuffin continue, offering another chance to insert a stand-alone, episode-length adventure along the way? Interestingly, a look at the IMDb top 10 rated episodes of "Discovery" there isn't one single entry beyond the second season.

This week's curiously named installment is entitled "Whistlespeak" and it's almost a throwback to old school-style of sci-fi storytelling, more typically found in something like "Stargate SG1." And a 10 episode-long chase for an alien artifact would be just fine in that show, because each season was typically 22 episodes long. Sadly, that's one reason why "Discovery" has been deteriorating, rather than improving, because each season — and it's far more obvious in seasons 3, 4 and 5 — seems to follow a very cookie-cutter formulaic approach.

There's always a threat facing all life in the universe (killer AI, exploding dilithium, gravity waves, Progenitor tech), there's always a series of clues-of-sorts that have to followed and that usually entails a set of standalone adventures before finally everything concludes in a disappointing payoff. Tragically, "Discovery" never really found its identity and it struggled from the outset when the original concept was not to focus on the captain of a particular starship, but rather the first officer.

two characters in dingy brown clothing sit and have a conversation among stone walls

That combined with the fact that big-budget TV sci-fi has shifted to shorter seasons with more expensive episodes over longer seasons and more expansive storylines. Just remind yourself what other sci-fi shows have managed to achieve in five seasons; "Stargate: Atlantis" and " Babylon 5 " both had five seasons, "Battlestar Galactica" only had four and "Stargate: SG1" had 10. (Although the less said about the whole Ori storyline, the better.)

All that aside, this particular episode was a quirky little number that was actually quite enjoyable. So, that's nice. Yes, there are one or two enormous small plot holes and the super-convenient tech has somewhat taken a turn for the ridiculous. This is not swallowing a pill to genetically alter you temporarily, these are easy-install "optical tricorders" — yes, indeed, you need never have the burden of having to actually carry a tricorder anymore, because now they can be worn like contact lenses.

This week, Capt. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) beam incognito down to the surface of a pre-warp, pre-industrial world much like the Planet Vancouver that we often saw in just about every incarnation of "Stargate." And why-oh-why do these primitive, unevolved civilizations always have traditions that seem harmless at first, but upon further examination almost certainly seem to involve decapitation, disembowelment or any one of a hundred different, excruciating ways of dying, all in the name of glorious sacrifice to some god or another. Was the human race ever like tha...oh wait, hang on. Damn .

Mmm, fire indeed hot. These primitive folk do know that fire needs air to burn, right? Just checkin' like.

In this particular instance it's simply suffocating. Of course if you blew the fires out that also happen to be burning in the room, you know, using up all the precious air that's left, you might last a teeny-tiny bit longer. But that's probably not covered in standard Starfleet training, rather undergraduates are instead taught how to rebuild an illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator using only a discarded toothbrush, a clothes peg, an empty washing up liquid bottle and sticky-back plastic.

You also have to wonder how the local population had such an in-depth knowledge of the sacrificial chamber if no one ever survived, but we'll look past that, just like the writers did. And boy-oh-boy, there's along time to kill before you get killed. On the up side, the dialogue is pretty sharp this week and despite all its flaws, this is a well-paced installment. Still, a cliffhanger might be nice at some point before the show wraps permanently. All things considered though, given the low bar "Discovery" has sadly set itself, this one isn't terrible.

In other, somewhat related news, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish has stepped down and it's rumored that the entertainment giant is going to create an "office of the CEO" and have a team making the important decisions rather than a rich, white man who doesn't seem to have much of a clue. Sounds like a plan, right? Well, wait for it... Instead, three rich, white men will be making all the important decisions. George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks and Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures.

Lt. Tilly in engineering.

Needless to say, Paramount's share value has taken a nosedive this week. Now while most of this is related to Paramount Global, it will of course affect the future of Paramount Plus, including programming choices, budget and just about everything else that determines whether or not we'll get to see any "Star Trek" going forward, let alone quality "Star Trek." Let's face facts, the only reason we're getting a Section 31 TV series TV movie is because of contractual obligations.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home  on Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

When Scott's application to the NASA astronaut training program was turned down, he was naturally upset...as any 6-year-old boy would be. He chose instead to write as much as he possibly could about science, technology and space exploration. He graduated from The University of Coventry and received his training on Fleet Street in London. He still hopes to be the first journalist in space.
