Although not conventional trailers, these easy-to-use wheelless carriages are great economical alternatives for motorcycle enthusiasts who only transport one bike at a time or who have little to no storage space. Simply attach either hauler to a tow vehicle with a Class II or Class III 2" receiver. Then, elevate and secure the front wheel with ratchet straps. The rear wheel remains on the ground while in tow. When your tow is complete, Dandy Hauler can be stowed behind the seat of pick-up, and Slick Wheelie easily fits in a trunk.

Slick Wheelie accepts front tires up to 5 1/2 inches in width - 6 inches, if the psi is reduced. There are no tire size restrictions with the Dandy Hauler.

I’ve transported bikes in the back of vans, trucks, and on makeshift two-wheel trailers for nearly two decades. So, I’ve come to know a thing or two about motorcycle trailers. Although I haven’t had the chance to test all the products on this list, my opinions are based on transporting motorcycles for nearly 20 years.

As brands rise and fall in terms of quality and new technologies enter the market, I reserve the right to change my opinions and product choices.

Best Motorcycle Trailers: Reviews & Recommendations

Many of the motorcycle hitch trailers on the market limit you to transporting dirt bikes or small motorcycles, but not the Black Widow SMC-600R. This model has a 600-pound weight capacity, meaning it should be able to transport the majority of bikes with ease. Included in the sale is a loading ramp that measures six feet, which you can store on the carrier when it’s not in use. 

The carrier works with 2-inch Class III or IV hitch receivers, and there’s a 5/8-inch hitch pin and anti-rattle device included in the sale. At the front there’s a built-in adjustable wheel chock, which means this model doesn’t have bilateral roll-on/roll-off action, but you should have more confidence that your bike is locked in place while on the move. This is easily the most heavy-duty model on the list, and unfortunately that means it weighs 98 pounds. So, it’s not the easiest trailer to fit single handedly.

If you need to transport relatively heavy motorcycles on a tight budget, just get the Ecotric 500lbs Motorcycle Trailer. As its name suggests, this model has a 500-pound weight capacity, which at this price point is astounding. It works with 2-inch square receivers that are Class II, III, IV, or V hitches, making it a lot more versatile than other hitch carriers on the market. It’s a multi-load carrier, meaning it’s easy to load your bike from either side.

The carrier only weighs 48 pounds, making it extremely lightweight compared to the weight it can support. And there’s an anti-tilting device, which is meant to prevent the motorcycle from swaying. Included in sale is a loading ramp, which you can place on the carrier when you’re on the road. Unfortunately, a trailer hitch pin isn’t included, so you’ll have to pick that up yourself.

If you’re only planning on transporting dirt bikes, the Black Widow AMC-400 Hitch-Mounted Carrier is the obvious choice. This model has a 400-pound weight capacity, which is more than enough for any regular motocross bike, even a 450cc four-stroke. It works with 2-inch Class III or IV hitch receivers and fits bike wheels that are up to 5.5-inches wide. So anyone with fat-bike tires can count on this model, too.

This 6-foot-long ramp installs on either side for bilateral roll-on/roll-off action. Included in the sale is a youth dirt bike adapter and anti-rattle device. Built into the carrier is an anti-tilt bracket, which should help to reduce sway while you’re on the road. The whole unit weighs just 33.5 pounds, making it the lightest on this list. Unfortunately, for all but the lightest of road-going motorcycles, this carrier won’t be able to handle the load.

Anyone who regularly needs to transport two motorcycles, dirt bikes more specifically, should get the Black Widow AMC-600-2 Double Motorcycle Carrier. I say this is more intended for dirt bikes because the individual bikes must weigh less than 400 pounds each, and the carrier has a maximum load capacity of 600 pounds. But, in theory, you could also transport two small road bikes. This unit works with 2-inch Class III or IV hitch receivers and accommodates bike tires up to 5.5-inches wide.

Like some of the other models on this list, this ramp installs on either side for bilateral roll-on/roll-off action, and there’s an anti-rattle device included in the sale. It tips the scales at just 76 pounds, which isn’t bad considering it can transport up to 600 pounds of cargo, albeit in two sub-400 pound carrying slots.

Our Verdict

The Black Widow SMC-600R is easily the most versatile, heavy-duty motorcycle carrier on the market. And it comes in at an extremely reasonable price. But, if you’re on a tight budget, you can opt for the Ecotric 500LBS Motorcycle Trailer , and it’ll work just fine.

Load Capacity

You need a trailer that can carry the weight of your motorcycle. If you plan to load more than one motorcycle, then you need to add up the total weight of all of the motorcycles. If you plan to carry gear, then consider the weight of that too. Keep in mind that a dirt bike weighs 300-400 pounds. Most sportbikes weigh 300-600 pounds, while fully dressed cruisers can easily weigh 800 pounds.

A: You need to check the weight of your motorcycle and load rating of your trailer. They should be within the vehicle’s tongue weight. Also, make sure the motorcycle or bike’s weight does not surpass the maximum weight capacity of the trailer itself.

A: The tongue weight is the maximum weight your vehicle can carry on the hitch. You can find this information detailed in the vehicle owner’s guidebook. You can also figure it out yourself by taking the total weight of the car’s towing capacity and dividing it by 10.

Q: How big of a motorcycle trailer do I need?

A: It depends on the number of bikes stored. For one motorcycle, go with a trailer in the 4×8 and 6×12-foot range. For two motorcycles, a 6×10 to 7×14-foot trailer should work. Some of the most common dimensions include 5×8, 6×10., and 6×12-foot models. Please consult with your motorcycle manufacturer for exact dimensions before purchasing a motorcycle trailer.

Q: Do you need a wheel chock to trailer a motorcycle?

A: We highly recommend wheel chocks for tying down a motorcycle. Failure to use a wheel chock could cause your front wheel to rotate, turn, and wear down your tire’s tread or perform an unexpected turn on the highway, potentially causing an accident. There are times when you need to transport your bike, rather than ride it.

Whether you’ve just got the trackday bug or are into motocross, or whether you’re a serial bike buyer or restorer or indeed you’re going away and you’d rather clock up the miles on four wheels and save the bike for the fun roads. Whatever the scenario. – if you can’t ride it on the road, a trailer is a great solution.

What’s the best bike trailer?

This depends on the bike you need to move and your budget. If it’s a big touring bike you’ll need to buy a heavy-duty motorcycle trailer which will be built with higher quality components to deal with the load.

You also need to think about how many bikes you’ll be towing. Most trailers have a minimum load of 200kg and some of the larger ones will carry around 600kg. Some of these higher-load-rated trailers can carry two and sometimes 3 bikes, meaning you could carry a few MX bikes, a couple of sportsbikes or one Harley.

You will need to buy all the kit and materials and make sure you know what you’re doing otherwise you could end up causing an accident or damaging your bike. Or both.

ERDE PM310 Single Motorcycle Trailer

ERDE is a French trailer manufacturer and they make a wide range of trailers for leisure and agricultural use. They’re well made and popular. They sell three different motorcycle trailers in the UK and the PM310 is their cheapest option but perfect for anyone towing a single motorbike up to 240kg. It sits just 38cm from the ground, giving it a low centre of gravity. It has six securing loops to help you strap your bike down. You’ll need to buy the ramp separately at around £60.

Custom made trailers with plenty of options, including wheel size and type of trailer. The Deluxe Range Single Bike trailer is £419 with a max capacity of 300kg and 8” wheels. Made from heavy-duty British steel, featuring 190mm wide channels, removable lightboard, loading ramp, four tie-down points, security locking feature, and adjustable taper roller hubs. A good deal for a low price.

Side Loading Motorcycle Trailer - Armitage Trailers

A compact pulling option this side loading trailer is practical and lightweight with back supporting legs to store it upright in a garage when not in use. Taking a max load of 225kg, it comes with ramps, handlebar, seat post ratchet straps and a hitch lock. Additional features may be added at a cost.

Motorcycle Trailer Buying Guide

They may all look the same, but trailers differ in design and build. So what do you need to look out for? Here are some top tips:

Road laws: UK road laws state that all trailers must have a number plate, lights and indicators. If your trailer did not come with lights, you could easily fit some yourself for minimal cost.

Manoeuvrability: Choose a trailer that is easily attached to the transporting vehicle and one that is light enough to move around for storage when not in use.

The trailer body: Trailers can be welded or bolted. Welded trailers should have quality finished welds which are not sharp or splattered. Bolts that are tack welded on are better quality.

Wheel channel: The wheel channel should be wide enough to fit your bike’s tyres.

Finish: Whether you choose galvanised steel for its rust-resistant properties or a more straightforward painted finish, make sure there are no sharp edges or areas where rust can form underneath.

Securing your bike: A trailer should have durable ratchet strap eyes to keep your bike secure along with a sturdy front wheel hoop. Some trailers come with front-wheel holders for more reliable loading.

If you've never towed with a trailer before, it's not that difficult. Watch a couple of Youtube videos but definitely go out and clock up some miles with an empty trailer before you load the bike up and head out for the first time. Remember if you're towing a trailer, you can't go in the outside lane on the motorway. Check your trailer's tyre pressures before you set off Your braking distance will increase when you're towing your motorcycle

Am I allowed to tow a trailer? If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can: Drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. Or tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.

If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM. View your driving licence information to check. You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

What’s the speed limit for towing a trailer? 60mph is the maximum speed on a motorway or dual carriageway. On A-roads with an NSL you should stick to a maximum speed of 50mph.

What lights do I need on a trailer? You have a legal obligation to ensure that your trailer has the appropriate lighting. All trailers must be fitted with: Two red sidelights, two red stoplights, two red reflective triangles, amber indicators that will flash 60–120 times per minute

Does your trailer need a number plate? Yes, by law, any trailer being towed on UK roads needs to have an illuminated number plate that corresponds to those on your car.

How do I connect a trailer to my towing vehicle? You will need a professional to fit an EU Type Approved tow bar to the back of your car. A good place to start is somewhere like Halfords; they will make sure that the tow bar is right for your car and that it’s installed and wired correctly.
